Our Mission

“We are really excited to be part of the first annual City of Ripon Tree of Lights [in partnership with Hospice of San Joaquin],” noted Roz Combley, Cit y of R ipon Youth Commissioner as she explained that hospice is such a great cause and, “Hospice of San Joaquin’s Tree of Lights is great for people who have lost a loved one.” For the past 24 years, communities in six different cities in the central valley have enjoyed Tree of Lights as Hospice of San Joaquin’s partners with government, nonprofit agencies, businesses and community members. “The Ripon Tree of Lights is long overdue. Hospice of San Joaquin has provided care for Ripon families and the neighboring communities for the past 32-years. Today, Ripon has a Tree of Lights of their own,” explained Stephen Guasco, Chief Executive Off icer, Hospice of San Joaquin. With a unanimous vote, the Ripon City Council approved a partnership with Hospice of San Joaquin on September 4, 2012. The Council’s vote allowed one of the pine trees in Mistlin Park to become the Tree of Lights. “We, as a City, are very proud to be co-sponsors. We encourage our community to participate in this event,” noted Mayor Elden Red Nutt who agreed with his Council colleagues, “Hospice of San Joaquin is a wonderful organization that fills a void.” “The holidays are special days as family comes together; and when family members pass, it is important to have our extended community’s support,” Gene Acevedo, Hospice of San Joaquin’s Communit y Outreach Director noted. “Tree of lights is a way for bereaved families to remember their loved ones

“Hospice of San Joaquin has left a legacy i n me a s I have b e en welcomed in peoples lives to support them during their difficult times; and, I learned a lot from working with my colleagues who are so dedicated to that [hospice] purpose,” noted Jim Russow, Hospice of San Joaquin’s Chaplain a s he appreciated t he oppor tunit y former Executive Director Barbara Tognoli granted him as she hired him. “Barbara Tognoli sent me a life line, an unforseen blessing, a gift that I have enjoyed so much...” A f ter 12-yea rs of dedic ated ser v ice to Hospice of San Joaquin Chaplain Russow is now ge t t i ng r e ad y to retire from his full-time Chaplain duties. Russow remembered how in the spring of 2000 he read an ad in the newspaper seeking a hospice chaplain, “I was always more inclined in my ministry to the service of people rather than the organizational structure or the common 10-year

plan,” he highlighted that his wife encouraged him to look into the job at Hospice of San Joaquin. Upon assuming a full time position at Hospice of San Joaquin, “I have always valued highly the cohesiveness of the team; the team’s dedication of purpose to the same goals,” Russow learned that the hospice philosophy was parallel to his focus - the care of patients and their families during the most

difficult moments of their lives. “ The work of the chaplain is spir it ua l support,” Russow explained that the Chaplain serves the spiritual needs at the level the patient desires, “My role is not to come-in and tell them what to do.” Every patient sets their own agenda, “some people say ‘I am not religious but I am spiritual;’ that’s when we ask, what does that mean in your live?” Understanding t he cont r ibut ions a nd the individual value of every person became one of Russow’s duties, “its important to know that we [as humans] have made a difference; but, at every level they allow and set the parameter to help them.” Nonetheless, there are many needs the chaplain supports on indiv idual ba si s, “some a re ver y

November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. It is also a time to reflect on that for which we are thankful. It is a time to recognize and thank our many partners without whom Hospice of San Joaquin could not succeed. Our Mission St at e me nt cal ls u s t o partnership. It states that Hospice of San Joaquin will “collaborate with heath care providers and the public in promoting quality end-of-life care.” Partnership takes many forms. We are blessed to have provider partners integral to the care we provide. Pharmacy Care Concepts is our pharmaceutical provider and VerusCare is our Durable Medical Equipment provider. Both of these companies take on Hospice of San Joaquin’s mantle. They ensure that all medications and equipment are delivered, set up and explained to our patients regardless of the day or time needed. In fact many of our patients are unaware that they are contract providers – not direct Hospice of San Joaquin employees. Our gardeners from Greenline Landscapers perform miracles. Their hard work to maintain our gardens contributes greatly to the beauty and serenity of our campus. Some of our patients need palliative medical procedures that require specialized equipment and medical training. We are fortunate that our local hospitals fully embrace the hospice concept. We are able to refer our patients to our hospital partners for specialized procedures. Their Emergency Departments work with us to ensure that we comply with our patients’ wishes for comfort care when emergency palliative care is required. Our many volunteers, currently 115 strong, provide comfort to our patients through their routine visits. Additionally, they provide much needed respite for our patients’ care givers. Others provide many hours performing office tasks as well as helping us maintain our beautiful campus. The 135 Hospice of San Joaquin Butterf ly Auxiliary Members put in countless hours. They host a variety of teas, luncheons and dinners in addition to the annual Moonlight Sip & Stroll. Their efforts raise money to support our Hospice House. Active Stockton, Lodi and Tracy Chapters are assisted by many sponsors and friends; many of these are recognized in this publication of Hospice Awareness. As an aside, the Moonlight Sip & Stroll recently received a “Best of San Joaquin” designation for community events. The California Trucking Association – San Joaquin Unit, also assisted by many sponsors, organizes the annual “Truckin’ for Hospice.” The annual Jail House Scramble is sponsored by the San Joaquin County Correctional Officers Association and the Lathrop Rotary, provide support for Hospice of San Joaquin’s programs. Numerous other organizations and clubs share the proceeds of their hard work with Hospice of San Joaquin, including Lambda Theta Phi, Omega Nu, the Rotary Club of Stockton and the Stockton Pacific Rotary, the Lodi Rotary Club and many others. T here are many individuals and ser vice organizations who continuously support our work. We are grateful to the United Way, Community Foundation of San Joaquin and the Lodi Community Foundation along with the many employee-donor programs in businesses throughout our community. Our archives would be woefully lacking if it weren’t for Tim and Sue Ulmer of Ulmer Photo. Tim tirelessly attends and creates a complete photographic record of our many events. Lastly, Hospice of San Joaquin, in concert with our many partners, produces our annual Trees of Lights. Each year, thousands of individuals and families dedicate lights in memory or in honor of loved ones. We are pleased that our original host-partner, San Joaquin Delta College, has again consented to host our Tree where it has been continuously lit during the holiday season for 24 years. Partners for our other six trees include: Doctors Hospital of Manteca, The Tracy Outlets, Sutter Health Central Valley Region (Sutter Tracy Community Hospital and Tracy Hospital Foundation);Clements/Lockeford Chamber of Commerce, the City of Lodi and West Coast Arborists, the Rio Vista Chamber of Commerce, and --new this year – the City of Ripon along with the City of Ripon Youth Commission. Our Trees could not light the skies without the dedicated help of the Pacific Gas and Electric Corporation and the PG&E Employee\Volunteers. As you can see Hospice of San Joaquin is empowered by its many partners in providing compassionate care to the residents of the Central Valley. We are so fortunate and so very thankful to all of you.
