When I first moved to California I heard dire stories of the Cuesta Grade and the land beyond—a land described as difficult and harsh and distant. Quite unexpectedly I found my dream home in that “land beyond” and I found myself reflecting on barriers, real and imagined, that shape a journey.

FROM THE MINISTER

mUUsings Greetings from your interim minister. The summer vacation season is behind us and we’re settling in. If you are here because you are looking for religious education for your children, if you are here because you want to hear a good choir or because you’re hoping to socialize with friends, you are welcome. Yet know that there is more – much more – that is growing in this congregation. This is a space where your thinking is challenged, where what has always been is rigorously reviewed and where bias is peeled away, one prejudice at a time. This is a space where hearts are strengthened in a community that cares, a place where the still small voice of the spirit can be heard and shared - where Mystery, with a capital M is important in understanding who and whose we are. To be a religious community relevant in the 21st century, there must be committed members. As you move through the Fall with its round of programs and activities and with the many opportunities to do – and do – and do, take some time to consider what authentic membership means. Michael Durall, author of The Almost Church Revitalized, identified five criteria for membership. Can you make these commitments? Attend Sunday services regularly Participate in one program that deepens your faith Participate in one outreach project Reach the 5 to 10% charitable giving level as soon as possible Tell others about the church

HORIZON NEWS

After all, the church doesn’t exist to serve us. We are here to serve. We work on ourselves, in order to help others. And we help others as a way to work on ourselves. It’s going to be a dynamic year, with much to do and much to ponder. It’s going to be an ordinary year, filled with the mundane and the miraculous. And like all years there will be ups and downs, successes and failures. I know that you’ll wrestle with challenges known and unknown, that you’ll struggle to balance a budget and make hard choices about what to do and what to leave undone. That’s the way life unfolds in this congregation. Welcome to the journey.

Faithfully, Rev. Helen 972-492-4940 ext. 106

HORIZON NEWS

All Horizon members and friends are an important part of the ministerial search process. It is crucial that the many voices of Horizon are heard. Please spend some time reflecting on your aspirations for Horizon and make time in your schedule to spend approximately 30 minutes taking the survey. The online survey link is listed in the Friday all-church email, is in a letter mailed to your address on record with the church, and is available after service in the fellowship hall. The survey will also be available on laptops after the Sunday service on October 4 th and 11th.

The survey must be completed in one sitting. Make sure you complete all 6 sections of the survey and click DONE, or your results will not be recorded. If needed, you may restart the survey. We ask that each individual Horizon member complete the survey separately. The survey will close October 11th. The results of our All-Congregation Survey and our Small Group Conversations (on September 13 and October 11) will be included in the Search Packet that will be provided to potential ministerial candidates. We need to accurately reflect the character of our congregation and the attributes we want in a new minister. Participation by a high percentage of Horizon's members is important to our success in the survey and in the search. If you have any questions, concerns, or difficulties, please email msc@horizonuu.org. Or you can talk to a Ministerial Search Committee member in the fellowship hall after Sunday service. Thank you for your participation! Horizon’s Ministerial Search Committee: John Myers, Chair; Beth Bargar; Deb Freeman; Peggy Gill; Elizabeth Gustwick; Judith (JuLane) Lane; M.C. Meador

Our Church Directory A few weeks ago I asked members to check ACS and verify their information such as address, phone numbers and emails. I have had several people ask me what ACS was or how to access ACS. This brought me to an idea of having some on site basic training for people that may need some assistance with using the system. I will work on recruiting some volunteers to help with this project. In the meantime, if you want to set up a login, follow the prompts on the website. Keeping our ACS updated is important to stay connected! Think of it as your “digital” Church Directory.

Mr. Rivas will speak about the history and religious significance of suicide in Christendom, the legal status of assisted suicide, including "physician-assisted suicide," in America today, and Final Exit Network's role in the movement for the right to death with dignity.

GROWTH AND LEARNING NEWS

Adult Growth and Learning Death with Dignity (continued). The State of Minnesota, in a trial last May against Final Exit Network, prevailed in establishing that one can be convicted of "assisting in a suicide" merely for giving someone truthful, accurate, lawfully obtained information about the choices one has a right to make as to the time and manner of one's death. The ruling criminalizes many conversations people ordinarily have in the privacy of their homes when a loved one is dying. Final Exit Network is appealing the ruling on First Amendment free speech grounds. Final Exit’s mission is to work toward obtaining the basic human right of competent adults to choose to end their lives on their own terms when they suffer from irreversible physical illness, intractable pain, or a constellation of chronic, progressive physical disabilities. Come on Sunday to hear Mr. Rivas address this important topic.

THE ART FORGER BY A. A. Shapiro Almost twenty-five years after the infamous art heist at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum—still the largest unsolved art theft in history—one of the stolen Degas paintings is delivered to the Boston studio of a young artist. Claire Roth has entered into a Faustian bargain with a powerful gallery owner by agreeing to forge the Degas in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But as she begins her work, she starts to suspect that this long-missing masterpiece—the very one that had been hanging at the Gardner for one hundred years—may itself be a forgery. The Art Forger is a thrilling novel about seeing—and not seeing—the secrets that lie beneath the canvas.

YEAR–ROUND STEWARDSHIP

YEAR-ROUND STEWARDSHIP IS WELL UNDER WAY In case you haven’t heard, Horizon is shifting to a year-round Stewardship Program, where each HORIZON UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST CHURCH month about 20 families and individuals are asked to renew their pledges. These families are also given an opportunity to engage in a fun event with others pledging that month. We began the program in March 2015, and so far, about half of Horizon's pledging families have been contacted about pledge renewal and attending one of the monthly events. The rest of you will be contacted over the remainder of 2015 or in early 2016. Please watch for your pledge commitment letter and we hope you will attend and enjoy the activity that the leaders of your month choose. During your month we ask that you let our accountant, Menaca Padakandla, know your plans to support Horizon during the following year. You can return the commitment letter or use any means of communication with her, including email, accounting@horizonuu.org, and phone, 972-492-4940, ext. 105.

STEWARDSHIP NEWS

Artist Statement Art helps us define our humanity; it seduces us with beauty, pushes us to define what we are repulsed by, and every imaginable response in between. Artists are compelled to create. The act of creating evokes pleasure and pain, like great love. Time disappears when with this love. The ultimate result is something that you hope will speak to others. My own art has incubated from subjective beginnings. My undergraduate work focused on psychological portraits. The backgrounds in these paintings were provocative and they started to interest me. In grad school I began painting Asian textiles approaching them as high contrast portraits. I started my own Faux Finishing business and became intrigued with the lack of subject matter on a fauxed wall. The technique, products and tools were intoxicating. Surface quality became paramount. My current work bridges the divide between art and faux. I use trowels, palette knives, even pine needles to escape the inhibiting brush. I push and pull the visual plane, as if it were a puzzle with a hidden truth. I scratch and stab. Inspired by rust, peeling paint, old wood, sound waves, distortion and objects that have been used to exhaustion. The surface is the story and color plays the role of both protagonist and antagonist. Wendy Marceron

How Can I Help? Rev. Helen Carroll Real life stories about people who give selflessly to help others often touch us deeply. These tales of compassion at work point to the need for each of us to find outlets for service. Yet inspiration is not always enough to move a body to action. October 18, 2015

Beyond Categorical Thinking: The Van Gogh Cafe Rev. Keith Kron, Director of the UUA’s Transitions Department Living our Unitarian Universalist values isn’t always as easy as we would like it to be. Often what we strive for is not what actually happens. How can we improve the odds that we will lead with our best values inside and outside our congregation? This sermon will explore these issues as they pertain to our next minister. This service is a follow-up to the special Beyond Categorical Thinking workshop which will be held on Saturday morning, October 17th. The BCT program works with Unitarian Universalist congregations who are in the search process for a new settled minister. October 25, 2015

During the school year, child care is provided. mondaywings@horizonuu.org The Women’s Friendship in Growth (WFIG) meets on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Wednesdays, from 7:30 - 9 pm in the Horizon Library.
