Picking a college

Page 1

Matching Career to College Once you determine career options that you are interested in, you can begin to choose a major and then a college or training that will help you pursue this career path. In addition, the examination of your values and life roles that you did earlier can be valuable information as you consider the size, location and structure of a college that would be right for you. Collegeboard.org has a great tool for doing this. Click the Collegeboard.org link to visit this page:

In order to be able to save your searches, create an account by clicking “sign up” at the bottom of the page:

Once your account is created, walk through the selected filters on the left-hand side of the screen to search for the right college for you. The “Majors and Learning Environment” should be a very important filter for anyone. We suggest you start with this filter first. Draw from the careers you have explored in the previous section of the workbook to select a major(s) that match with your desired career path.

Matching Career to College Walk through the rest of the selection criteria picking what is important to you and narrowing down your search. Note that all criteria may not be important to you in deciding on a college. You do not have to use every factor to set your search; just use the ones that are important or relevant for you. Once you find a school you may be interested in, drag it down to the “My Colleges” section to save.

Once you have narrowed your search down by creating a list of colleges you want to consider, begin doing research on these colleges through the college board website and the institution’s website.
