Tennis idol to become brand ambassador of the Stuttgart sports car manufacturer ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

T

ennis megastar Maria Sharapova has taken on a new role: effective immediately, the 26-year-old world class player will be representing the sports car manufacturer, Porsche AG, as brand ambassador. The cooperation is initially signed for three years and involves a global communications campaign. The athlete is already very familiar with the vehicles from Zuffenhausen: as last year´s winner of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Sharapova not only took home prize money, but also a white 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. Born in Russia and living in the United States, Sharapova has achieved victories at all four Grand Slam tournaments in women’s tennis and she was ranked number 1 for a total of 21 weeks. “Maria Sharapova is an exceptional athlete. She combines top performance in her sports with elegance and power. These are precisely the qualities that are embroiled in our sports cars”, as Matthias Mueller, CEO of Porsche AG, explained in today’s introduction of the partnership. According to Mueller it was not easy to find the right person to be Porsche´s ambassador. “Maria Sharapova is the perfect choice. Her profile and charisma are an ideal fit for Porsche. She is also highly respected around the world and enjoys an outstanding reputation.” “This is a really special day for me,“ said Sharapova. “I have had the privilege to be associated with some

of the best brands in the world, but now to be partners with Porsche, is such an amazing honor,“ she explained during her presentation in Stuttgart. For Porsche, the choice of Maria Sharapova as brand ambassador extends its longterm commitment to women´s tennis. The company sponsors the German women’s national team, which competes as the Porsche Team Germany in the Fed Cup, and the Porsche Talent Team Germany, which supports promising young players. “We are fully committed to these activities for a long term. Andwith Maria Sharapova, we are now extending our involvement in women’s tennis globally”, Mueller added. Maria Sharapova was born in the Western Siberian town of Nyagan on April 18, 1987. She moved to Bradenton on the Gulf Coast of Florida (USA), when she was seven years old. Two years later she was accepted at the worldrenowned Tennis Academy of coach Nick Bollettieri. In 2004, at the age of 17, she won her first Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon, the third-youngest player ever. This feat was followed by titles in the other three Grand Slam tournaments: U.S. Open 2006, Australian Open 2008, and French Open 2012. To date, Maria Sharapova has won a total of 28 singles titles, including last year´s Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, the WTA Championships in 2004, and the silver medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Along with her involvement in the “Maria Sharapova Foundation”, she is also active as ambassador of the United Nations Development Program.

ob Hill was first adorned with the mansions of the great railroad barons of the Central Pacific Line - C.P. Huntington, Leland Stanford, Mark Hopkins and Charles Crocker, known as the Big Four - during the days of the Wild West. James Fair and James Flood, who amassed fortunes during the Gold Rush, later built their mansions there as well.

original room sizes, leaving The Huntington’s guest rooms substantially larger than industry standards.

The Tobin family, founders of The Hibernia Bank, joined their affluent contemporaries on Nob Hill in the 1870’s with the construction of a very large Victorian home.

Years later a posh nightclub, the Romanoff Restaurant, replaced the Zebra Room - catering to an exclusive clientele that was fast, flashy and favored such watering holes as the original Cirque Room. In 1960 L’Etoile, another elegant and famous restaurant, replaced Romanoff ’s.

N

In 1922, the former site of the Tobin Mansion became a 12-story, $2.5 million residential apartment hotel building. Constructed by Weeks and Day, the 140 room Huntington Apartments was the first steel and brick high-rise west of the Mississippi. In keeping with Nob Hill’s exclusive ambiance, the new building was described by San Francisco’s Illustrated Daily Herald as “the last word in luxury…the finest apartment facilities with the most up-to-date hotel service, offering a combination of features never before attempted in the West.” Some of the apartments were installed with San Francisco’s first twin wall - or Murphy – beds, Pullman kitchens with electric stove, inset steam radiators and a main kitchen providing room service to residents - considered quite the innovation at the time. In 1924 Eugene Fritz, the real estate developer who managed the property, purchased the Huntington Apartments. The Huntington maintained its reputation as the West’s most elegant apartment building, home to some of San Francisco’s most distinguished citizens. Following World War II Fritz, a shrewd businessman, realized the vast potential for increased transient business to San Francisco due to the city’s high visibility during the war effort. In 1945, Fritz began a two-year renovation program to transform the apartments into the elegant Huntington Hotel while maintaining the

A cozy lobby was created on the ground floor with the Zebra Room Restaurant located directly adjacent to it. The Huntington and the Zebra Room quickly became home to visiting dignitaries, royalty, top-level executives and San Francisco’s “Café Society.”

In 1950, Eugene Fritz stunned the male-dominated industry by turning over the hotel’s ownership to his 14 year old daughter, Dorothy. As one of the country’s first women to own and later manage a hotel, “Dolly” Fritz expanded the hotel’s exclusive reputation. Her 1967 marriage to Newton Cope, a Sacramento real estate developer, restaurateur and California historian cemented the family’s commitment to Northern California’s hospitality industry. Newton Cope transformed the ground floor of the Huntington Hotel into Big 4 Restaurant, one of the country’s most celebrated cocktail lounges and dining rooms. Named for the Central Pacific Railroad’s “big four” tycoons, the restaurant’s club-like ambiance showcases Mr. Cope’s impressive collection of 19th century railroad and early California memorabilia. The space formerly occupied by L’Etoile was renovated to become the Nob Hill Spa, currently celebrating its 13th anniversary. A pool was built where the old dining room had been, and treatment rooms were placed under the lobby in the location of the old kitchen. For the first time, a gift shop was opened for hotel and spa guests alike. Today, The Huntington Hotel maintains its long standing tradition of high standards and gracious service. Its reputation for quiet and understated luxury has made it a favorite among savvy travelers who prefer individuality and elegance.

BRIDAL GLOW AT THE SPA & HAMMAM AT FOUR SEASONS HOTEL ISTANBUL AT THE BOSPHORUS Exclusive treatments for the bride-to-be, combining centuries-old traditions and contemporary Spa applications. Getting married is a wonderful experience, but it can be stressful at times and what better to ease that stress than the Spa & Hammam at Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus. Expert therapists suggest taking the bride to a journey of preparation after which she is relaxed, rejuvenated and ready for that special day. They have useful recommendations, especially for the days prior to the wedding ceremony, to make this special day exactly the way the bride wants it to be. The Spa & Hammam enhances one’s wedding memories with a wide array of services to help the bride relax and restore her mind, body and soul before the big day. It offers services from manicures and pedicures to body wraps, massages, facials and traditional Turkish hammam. The extensive Spa facilities such as steam rooms, sauna, whirlpool and indoor swimming pool make it the perfect place to start the wedding day off with elegance and style. “Certainly, our main recommendation is Traditional Hammam, where we will clean the skin of the bride and also her energy. We like to think of the hammam experience for the bride as a preparation where we remove the past energy (dead cells) and stimulate the regenerating energy (new cells) in celebration of her new married life. The hammam experience can be enjoyed even on the wedding day. We know what a unique experience is to get married, and we will offer our best effort to be a special part of that memorable moment for the bride-to-be,” said Spa Manager Viviana Quesada. For those who want smooth and purified skin on their wedding day, the Diamond Luxury Lifting Facial is one of the best offers of Spa. This facial is designed to revitalize and nourish the skin, while diminishing fine expression lines. What better excuse to indulge in this facial than to have wonderful picture memories. The Diamond Facial is recommended a few days before the wedding for best results. The 90 minute Tropical Magnolia ritual is perfect for brides seeking to enjoy a deeply relaxing massage, and it also provides the profound benefits of champaca’s digestive proprieties. The treatment starts with the soft sounds of fungsa, Tibetan bowls used to realign the chakras, while the guest is enveloped in the Tropical Magnolia aroma blend. A soothing foot ritual is followed by a cleansing body wash and scrub to prepare guests for a deeply relaxing full body massage with warm, fragrant Tropical Magnolia oil. Some stretching is done to ease tight muscles and with the help of long and relaxing strokes, and the mind finds a moment of calmness and rest in the midst of all that pre-ceremony stress. The ritual concludes with stretching of the upper body combined with a massage over a warm towel. This treatment is ideal for the day before of the wedding.

The History of High Heels Catherine d’ Medici, Queen of France

T

hroughout the ages, many women have tried to make an impact on the world, many without success. There are those, however, who are able to break the bonds that held women to certain positions in society. Some of these women who were able to break from tradition made an immense impact on the society of their time and upon history in general. One of these amazing women is Catherine de’ Medici, an Italian woman who eventually became Queen of France. Catherine de’ Medici was born to the Medici family of Florence in 1519. Her parents were Lorenzo, Duke of Urbino and Madeleine de la Tour d’Auvergne. Both of her parents died shortly after her birth leaving her as the sole heiress to all of the possessions and holdings of the Medici family. After her parents’ deaths, she had no close relatives to care for her. Her father’s distant relative Cardinal Guilio de’ Medici came to Florence to take control of the Florentine government and to care for the young Catherine. In 1527, when Catherine was eight years old, the Medici palace in Florence was attacked by an angry mob of Florentines. Her relatives who lived in the palace with her decided to flee the palace but they were ordered by the rebellion leaders to leave young Catherine behind, so that they would have a valuable hostage in the future. After young Catherine was taken hostage she was placed in various convents in and around the city. While in these convents she received an education that allowed her to be one of the best-educated women of her time. When the Florentine rebellion was finally crushed by Guilio d’Medici, now Pope Clement VII, she was sent to Rome to reside with him. Once there, her marriage arrangements were made. Clement and King Francis I of France arranged that Catherine was to be married to his second eldest son, Henry of Orleans. Now at age 14, she was described as, “small and slender, with fair hair, thin and not pretty in face, but with the eyes peculiar to all the Medici” (Young 393). Her arrival at the palace in France for the wedding ceremonies was supposedly a time of great celebration. Catherine wanted a great impression on the Royal Court of France. Although short in stature, she wanted to make a grand entrance. In order to do this she consulted a Florentine artisan for help, who had presented her with the first example of the modern high-heeled shoe. Her arrival in France, while wearing these shoes, caused quite a stir. After her marriage to Henry of Orleans, she traveled and saw much of France. King Francis I, now her father-in-

law soon realized what a wonderful traveling companion his new daughter-in-law was. Other than Francis, Catherine had not a friend in all of France and was not looked highly upon by the French people, especially the nobles, who called her “the Italian woman”. King Francis’ eldest son, the Dauphin Francis, died in 1536, leaving Henry of Orleans as the heir to the French throne. This caused quite a commotion throughout France. The French did not want an Italian woman to become their queen. Many French hoped for Catherine to do something wrong to keep her from ever reaching the throne. Many thought that she would never have children and that her time in there would be short, but between the years 1543 and 1555 Catherine had ten children, three of which died in infancy. Of those that survived three of them, Francis, Charles, and Henry, would later serve as Kings of France. In 1547, Catherine’s beloved father in law, Francis I died. Her husband of 14 years became King Henry II of France, and Catherine was now the Queen. Catherine’s severe unpopularity with the French people became greater than ever. Their new queen was not of royal blood and she was Italian-- not a good combination according to the French. Catherine’s marriage was also not very pleasant. Although she loved him deeply, Henry was more in love with his mistress, Diane de Poitiers, with whom he spent much of his time. What made matters worse, Diane had almost complete control over the weak-minded Henry. Through Henry, Diane de Poitiers gained much influence in the governing of France. This severely bothered Catherine, but she did not cause problems or create a stir. She kept her personal feelings and attitudes to herself. In 1559, Catherine’s husband died in a tournament accident and her eldest son Francis II came to the throne. Like his father, he was weak of mind. Francis II only ruled for 17 months and upon his death in 1560, Catherine’s second son, Charles IX came to the throne at age ten. This allowed Catherine to become Queen Regent of France, and she served as such until Charles IX’s death. She also served as Queen Regent for her third son, Henry III. During her reign, Catherine de’ Medici faced many problems including the religious wars involving the Huguenots in France and the French hatred toward her. She overcame such obstacles, managed to uphold the power of the monarchy, and protected the claims of the Valois dynasty.

Scams to Avoid in

PARI$ The Traps Tourists Fall Into

P

aris is a beautiful city, and attracts millions of tourists ever year. It’s a place that offers a host of enticing sights, smells, and experiences, but as with any big city there are reasons to guard yourself. Despite being a relatively safe city there are certain tricks that beggars and gypsies use to lure unsuspecting tourists. The first trap you may run into involves a woman, usually wearing some kind of full-length skirt, coming up and asking whether or not you speak English. Your initial reaction may be “of course!”, especially if you’re having language barriers yourself. As soon as you give a sign though that you do speak English, the woman will show you a postcard with a story about how she and her children are in desperate need of help. While it may be hard to ignore the situation, or even politely say that you cannot help, the more time you spend in the situation the harder it will be to get away. Bear in mind that once you begin speaking, the woman will often begin to follow you until you give in. I have found that the best solution in this kind of situation is to just shake your head as they approach, indicating that you know the trap and are simply not interested. At the bottom of Sacré-Coeur in Montmartre, you will most likely encounter the second trap. A group of men hang out at the bottom of the Funiculaire de Montmartre (a shuttle that takes you up the steep hill), approaching tourists and tying threaded bracelets on their arms. Before you know it, they are asking for a sum of money for the “gift” they have just given you. Be prepared for these men, as they are often slightly aggressive in their approach (not violent) and try tying the bracelets on people who are just

passing by. As long as you know what to expect, a simple shake of the head will be enough to put them off of you and on to their next target. The easiest trap to fall into involves a man or woman bending over just as you pass them. They then stand up and tell you they’ve just found a wedding ring or band on the ground, asking if it belongs to you, and then insisting that you take it. In reality, the ring was in their hand the whole time. After you’ve taken a few steps, the man or woman will turn around and come ask you for a “reward” for finding and giving you the ring. They show no interest in taking the ring back, and try to settle with a substantial monetary reimbursement. If you find yourself in this situation, firmly place the ring back in their hand (or if they refuse to accept it, just place it on the ground) and walk away. When they realize you are serious, they will stop bothering you. The best way to avoid this is, like in the other situations, to simply shake your head at the beginning of the ordeal or act as if you never saw them bend down in the first place. Remember, the longer you spend discussing the matter with them, the harder it is to get away. As previously stated, Paris is not a dangerous city. Do not let a few people ruin what could very well be the best vacation you’ve ever had! Instead, recognize the simple fact that these schemes do exist, and that there are very simple solutions to avoiding them. It may seem shockingly uncomfortable to ignore people or refuse them help, but realize that they are out there simply to make money off of tourists by manipulating them.

GUCCI FLORA SILVER JEWELRY RANGE BLOSSOMS WITH NEW ADDITIONS

T

he Diamantissima collection from Gucci Jewelry comprises an elegant interpretation of the House’s classic diamante pattern, worked in a refined open weave.

Diamantissima is one of Gucci’s signature motifs, and was the original signature of the Florentine fashion house and a precursor to the famous GG logo. When translated into jewelry pieces, the delicate crisscross design bears testament to the high quality craftsmanship and innovation that is synonymous with Gucci Jewelry. GUCCI FLORA SILVER JEWELRY RANGE BLOSSOMS WITH NEW ADDITIONS

I

nspired by Gucci’s Flora design of the 1960s, Gucci Jewelry is pleased to release new additions to the Gucci Flora silver jewelry line.

The story began in Milan in 1966, when Prince Rainier of Monaco brought his wife to the Gucci boutique. Rodolfo Gucci insisted that Princess Grace choose a gift to accompany the bamboo bag she had purchased. The Princess requested a scarf. Rodolfo felt that the House lacked one sufficiently beautiful for the royal style icon and so he commissioned illustrator Vittorio Accornero to create the most beautiful print he could imagine. Accornero returned with his painting: the “Flora”, a sumptuous, multi-hued, flowered template destined to become a design classic. Featuring the now iconic intricate pattern of butterflies and flowers, the new Gucci Flora jewelry pieces are crafted in sterling silver. The romantic Flora pattern is clearly displayed and is offset by the Aureco finish, which lends depth to the pattern and character to the design. This latest ensemble comprises a set of three pieces including a new heart motif with a cuff bracelet and

earring duo in the traditional Flora style. The necklace (45cm), stud earrings and bracelet all display solid silver heart pendants engraved with a small Flora butterfly and the Gucci signature logo. Two pieces without the heart charm include a solid Flora bracelet in cuff style, designed to match hoop earrings (10mm). The iconic flowered pattern has been used over the years by Gucci across handbags and accessories, and now translates beautifully into this wearable and charming jewelry line. Gucci Jewelry All Gucci jewelry is handcrafted by highly skilled Italian goldsmiths and the high end jewelry collection is the epitome of impeccable craftsmanship. Luxury is defined by the choice of precious materials, the uniqueness of each design and the meticulous attention to detail. HODEL Where Pearl Dreams Are Born

T

oday Hodel is one of the foremost pearl jewellers in the world, renowned for creating some of the pearl industry’s most exclusive design pieces. In Early 2014, it will be releasing it’s new thematic advertising ‘Where Pearl Dreams Are Born” - A showcase of some of Hodel’s most outstanding jewellery designs from each of it’s collections - Signature, Couture, Elements and Bridal. The campaign is based on both myth, history and the idea that some of mankind’s earliest writings show that pearls were once prized much more highly than gold and diamonds. They were thought to be gifts from the deities – like the sea god Oro, who in Polynesian legend brought the black pearl to earth on a rainbow. At this time in these strange lands it was believed that when you wore pearls your dreams would depict your future love. Young women seeking love would wear pearls in order to find their true partners. While such folklore has long passed into antiquity, we at Hodel still believe that pearls possess the power to make your dreams come true – this is the inspiration and passion behind our designs from every collection as we continue the legacy. Based in Lucerne, Switzerland, Hodel follows the country’s tradition of excellence in craftsmanship, and is also the inheritor of a proud legacy of natural pearls stretching back throughout history. Hodel is continuing to invite high-end retailers across the world to become partners. Varius Rubracer

V

arius Rubracer

The writing instrument for contemporary men

Geneva – The Varius collection, the flagship of the Maison de Haute Ecriture, is now enhanced by a new creation that is firmly rooted in the 21st century. The Varius Rubracer exploits the qualities of high-tech rubber with a spirit of sport and urban living that is unmistakeably masculine. Once again, Caran d’Ache creates a surprise with its famous Varius collection. Complete freedom in design and manufacturing enables Varius to bring together highly original materials and express their qualities in new ways. The Varius Rubracer line continues this avant-garde approach that highlights unusual materials. Rubber is our inspiration. Refinement is our vocation. Intense. Dominant. Determined. Varius Rubracer enjoys a challenge, such as taking a material with a well defined character and revealing all the power of its personality. Its body of black rubber with guillochage decoration gives the new instrument an imposing elegance that is perfectly in tune with contemporary urban life. Its strong profile is accentuated by the striking visual and tactile contrast of the materials: soft and matte for the rubber, polished and sparkling for the rhodium-coated silver trims. As a symbol of the energy it radiates, a screw adds a touch of vibrant modernity to the body of the pen. The sense of refinement extends to the cap with its delicate guillochage and its new jointed clip. In the fountain pen, the cap conceals a new larger nib.

While rubber has long been associated with the world of car racing, its noble qualities have led to its increasing use in the world of luxury. Supple and waterproof, it also offers valuable strength and elasticity. Its appearance, its softness to the touch and its ergonomic qualities have particularly appealed to the world of Fine Watchmaking in recent years, to the point where it is now one of its favourite materials. Details in the design of the Varius Rubracer, such as the screw fixed into the rubber, clearly echo the two high-tech worlds of the car and the watch. This daring new design by Caran d’Ache is a subtle blend of

technology and design. Varius Rubracer captures the dynamism of today’s world. It is the signature of a company that is constantly innovating and firmly in touch with the mood of the times. There is no doubt that the Varius Rubracer offers the comfort and elegance expected by a modern man ready to face the great challenges of contemporary life. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION The Varius Rubracer line is comprised of four writing instruments: fountain pen, ballpoint, roller pen and mechanical pencil. • The new fountain pen offers greater writing comfort and can be used either with an ink pump or cartridges. The 18-carat rhodium-coated gold nib is available in several writing widths (OM, OB, EF, F, M, B, BB). • The roller pen is used either with a Caran d’Ache roller point cartridge or a Caran d’Ache fibre tip cartridge. • The ballpoint is fitted with a high-precision rotary mechanism and the famous Caran d’Ache Goliath giant cartridge with a capacity of up to 600 A4 pages of clean, blot-free writing. • The mechanical pencil also has a proven highprecision rotary mechanism and contains leads of 0.7 mm diameter. • The body is in genuine rubber refined by a special treatment that gives it softer feel and better resistance to cracking and ageing. • New jointed clip. • Rhodium-coated silvered trims. • Guillochage lines on the body and cap. The New Varius Rubracer is produced to Swiss Made quality standards that ensure a long service life, and is covered by an international guarantee. The Varius Rubracer is available from May 2013 in all Caran d’Ache sales points and boutiques.

the Caelograph

C

aran d’Ache unveils a unique fine writing instrument, the Caelograph, that combines technical expertise with design in exploring one of man’s most fascinating passions: the sky. In its long tradition of innovation, Caran d’Ache has developed another exceptional writing instrument that demonstrates great creativity and expertise. Like inventors always searching for new solutions, the craftsmen at Caran d’Ache have worked closely with an astronomer to produce this unique instrument that explores the sky and the stars. A personalised journey deep into the cosmos. Is it a writing instrument? A sky-watching tool? A work of art? The Caelograph is all of these. With a name that literally means “Write the sky” its ingenious mechanism allows you to see the position of the stars and the constellations at any given time, on any date. It brings alive the close, mystical relationship that has existed between man and the stars, Earth and sky, since the dawn of time. With all its mysteries, myths and legends, the nature of the cosmos has always raised countless questions. Over the millennia, man has learned to observe and measure it in order to understand it better and use the stars and their movements as valuable indicators of time and direction. From the earliest explorers to the latest research in physics, the constellations and stars have guided man’s progress and inspired his dreams. Caelograph puts a small part of this dream within easy reach. The mechanics of the sky in your hand With great technical expertise, this exclusive invention presents a map of the sky in a design enhanced by midnight blue Chinese lacquer. Apart from the natural requirement for accuracy, reproducing a flat map on the curved surface of a pen is a serious technical challenge. For the first time, the projection process known as Mercator has been applied to a writing instrument. In a second technical feat, Caran d’Ache has managed to represent, on a surface as small as the pen body, the 51 constellations and 353 stars visible from the northern hemisphere. And that is not all it does. The sky chart is mobile in order to indicate the position of the stars at any chosen time. This astonishing capability is made possible by an exclusive, highly ingenious mechanism based on two rings. One of the rings is mobile and is dedicated to the time, while the fixed ring is marked in days and months. By adjusting their position, the map can be set to the precise time and date required. A rotating semi-transparent sleeve reveals the visible part of the sky, indicates the horizon line, the

compass points and the zenith. A design to match To match this outstanding technical achievement, the Caelograph provides a case enhanced by midnight blue Chinese lacquer, applied according to the strict rules of the art, capable of showing the sky. This decorative technique, which was developed in China more than 3000 years ago and handed down over the generations, requires great dexterity. Very few western craftsmen share its secrets but Caran d’Ache is committed to preserving the precious skills involved in its Geneva workshops. First, the resin is collected from the toxicodendron vernicifluum (lacquer tree) then filtered and purified by hand before colour is added. The lacquer is applied in several extremely thin layers, which are dried and polished to produce its exceptional depth of colour and brilliance. For the Caelograph design, fine silvered particles are incorporated into the top layer to add depth to the starry sky which creates an extra challenge for the company’s master lacquerer. The stardust effect is striking and the Milky Way appears in a translucent cloud. Several other elements form part of the decor. The cap and the nib carry the hour lines typically found on sundials, making a light contrast with the dark Chinese lacquer. A compass rose is mounted on the tip and another is engraved on the nib. The clip is shaped like a compass needle, evoking the ageless link between navigation and astronomy. Depending on the model, the brightest stars are represented by diamonds, including Sirius in the constellation of Canis Major, the Great Dog. The Caelograph is produced in three versions and presented in noble box. The Alpha edition is coated in platinum and limited to 120 fountain pens and 120 roller pens, a reference to the 12 constellations of the zodiac and the 12 months of the year. The Sirius edition is gold plated and set with a diamond as a tribute to the brightest star in the heavens. It is limited to 52 pieces for the 52 weeks of the year. For those who love the infinity of space, the Zenith refers to the highest point imaginable or the highest degree of knowledge. Only one Zenith piece has been produced, in solid rose gold decorated with 22 diamonds symbolising the 22 brightest stars in the sky; the clip and piston pump are also set with a diamond. Each piece has been produced to the demanding Swiss Made quality standards and carries a lifetime guarantee. Presented with a matching compass and inkwell, the Caelograph invites you to touch the stars with Caran d’Ache’s most beautiful pen. St. Moritz Polo World Cup on Snow

2014

presented by Cartier The four teams: Cartier, Ralph Lauren, Deutsche Bank and BMW

N

o archaeological finds or ancient manuscripts exist to help us trace the origin of the sport of polo. However, the available research locates the birthplace of this fascinating sport as Persia, in around 600 BC. From there, polo spread to northern India, where it is still cherished and held in high esteem. Initially the game was played at royal residences and in military circles. British army officers only discovered the game much later, around 1850, and took the sport back with them from the Orient to Europe and westwards. The British first encountered the game then known as “pulu” in Manipur, eastern India. Their enthusiasm was so great that, from then on, members of the British army regularly played competitions against India. The popularity of polo led to the foundation of the first English polo club at Silchar, in 1859. This was followed by the Calcutta Polo Club, established in 1862 and now the oldest polo club in the world. In 1873, the British founded the first club in their home country, the Hurlingham Polo Club, which was also the first club to establish written rules. In 1876, the sport reached America, where James Gordon Bennett founded the Westchester Polo Club in Newport, Rhode Island.

The Americans soon took a fancy to the game, and asked the British to draw up rules of play. The Hurlingham Club rules then became the norm. Later it was the Americans who decided to introduce handicap rules for players. In 1910 the British and Indians recognised this American system. English ranchers took polo to South America, where the new sport elicited keen interest, especially in the region of Buenos Aires. Cross-breeding of South American and British horses produced a strain which proved ideally suited to polo. Ponies of Argentinian stock are still considered ideal for polo. In the war years, the European polo scene lay dormant, while the Argentinians continued to add to their knowledge and skills. This led to Argentina’s world dominance in polo, which continues unchallenged to this day. Nowadays polo is played on all continents, in over 50 countries. It is certainly the most exclusive sport to be played with a ball. All over the world, prestige tournaments are held which display the sport of polo at its best.

The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT FINAL EDITION The Ultimate Sports Car

HopelesslyRomanticMagazine.com

56

The grand finale: the SLS AMG GT FINAL EDITION brings an impressive era to an end in exclusive style. The FINAL EDITION model, built in a limited run of just 350 units globally, represents the last oppor-tunity for customers to order a SLS AMG GT – while at the same time re-flecting the unrivalled success story and unique scope offered by the first vehicle to be completely built by Mercedes-AMG. The super sports car, with its 583 hp AMG 6.3 -liter V8 front -mid engine, offers a fascinating combination of truly exceptional design and equipment features while exclusively developed optional Cup tires enhance its dynamic performance. The SLS AMG GT FINAL EDITION is celebrating its twin world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the Tokyo Motor Show (both: November 20 to December 1, 2013). The market launch will begin in March 2014 and the super sports car will be available as either a Coupé or a Roadster and once 350 units have been built, production of the SLS AMG model series will come to an end. Exterior with exclusive exposed carbon fiber hood and rear spoiler The special design of the SLS AMG GT FINAL EDITION ensures that it stands out in visual terms: the exposed carbon fiber hood with central air outlet, the carbon fiber front splitter on the front apron, the fixed carbon fiber rear spoiler that is reminiscent of the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series and the exclusive AMG forged light-alloy wheels make it a real head-turner. Particularly in conjunction with the designo magno graphite matte paintwork that has been adopted from the SLS AMG GT3 “45th ANNIVERSARY” collector’s model race car. In addition to the carbon fiber components, the unique design AMG forged wheels have a distinctly aggressive flair. To add to the visual impression when seen from behind, the struts of the rear apron are finished in high-gloss black. The new aerodynamic components which are comprised of an exposed carbon fiber hood, a carbon fiber rear spoiler and a carbon fiber front splitter all function to increase downforce on both the front and the rear axles. As on the SLS AMG Coupe Black Series and the SLS AMG GT3, the carbon fiber hood of the SLS AMG GT FINAL EDITION features a functional central air outlet. Apart from effectively dissipating engine heat, this outlet also increases downforce at the front axle and improves the Cd value. The engineers at AMG have utilized the vacuum effect to deliver the double benefit of dissipating the hot air from the engine compartment at the same time as drawing up the cool airflow from the vehicle’s underbody. The optimised aerodynamic balance not only improves the car’s potential on the racing circuit, but also contributes to handling safety. AMG forged wheels and newly developed Cup tires The exclusive design of the AMG forged wheels on the Final Edition are available in two color variants: inlayed in matte black with the spokes and rim flange in a high-sheen finish or completely painted matte black highlighted by a pencil thin high-sheen rim flange. Red-painted brake callipers provide an emotional and attractive contrast. New “Dunlop Sport Maxx Race” Cup tires in size 265/35 R 19 (front) and 295/30 R 20 (rear) are available on request as a no-cost option. These Cup tires have been exclusively developed for Mercedes- AMG, and not only do they improve steering precision: they also increase grip. The SLS AMG GT FINAL EDITION further lends itself for high-performance driving on private or closed-off circuits.

The super sports car celebrated its world premiere in its Coupé guise at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt/Main in September 2009, with the market launch taking place in the spring of 2010. The spectacular gull-wing model was followed in 2011 by the SLS AMG Roadster and the customer-sport racing model, the SLS AMG GT3. With various titles in international championships such as the ADAC GT Masters, the FIA GT3 European Championship and the FIA GT1 World Championship, as well as over 100 victories in race series on five continents, the racing version of the gullwing model has impressively demonstrated its extraordinary performance. In particular, long-distance successes in the Bathurst 12-hour race and the 24-hour races in Dubai, at the Nürburgring, in SpaFrancorchamps and in Barcelona have spectacularly confirmed the competitiveness of the racing gull-wing model. In 2013 alone, the SLS AMG GT3 2013 thus claimed the “grand slam” of classic GT3 long-distance races, with four victories in succession. In the hotly contested Blancpain Endurance Series, the SLS AMG GT3 similarly won the championship title in 2013. Since early 2010 the SLS AMG has also been ensuring safety in Formula 1, the ultimate motor racing series, as the Official F1® Safety Car. The FORMULA 1 SHELL BELGIAN GRAND PRIX in September 2012 saw the SLS AMG GT take over this role. In June 2013 came the market launch of the two most powerful variants: the SLS AMG Coupé Black Series with 622 hp and the SLS AMG Coupé Electric Drive with 740 hp. SLS AMG now already a classic of the future Since its world premiere in 2009 the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG has won numerous awards of international significance. Not least on the basis of its breathtaking design and acknowledged superb driving dynamics, the super sports car from Mercedes-AMG is today already deemed to be a classic of the future. Cory Everson Mother - Pet Parent - Humanitarian Photography by: Carly Hartman the oldest daughter of the founders of Hartman House, the non-profit group that Cory works with, hartmanhouse.org.

T

here are legends and icons we admire and respect, and there’s no one more respected and adored than Cory Everson, a six-time Miss Olympia. She is the fitness industry’s poster child for longevity and professionalism. When Cory decided she wanted children she had to first see if it was going to be safe to carry a child due to a genetic blood clotting disorder she inherited.

of drive. It was 100 degrees in the train; it was horrible. We got off the train and we didn’t have a chance to rest, recover, or even shower. We went straight to the orphanage.

After visiting high risk pregnancy doctors Cory and Steve decided it would be best to adopt verses risk her life carrying a child. After all, their goal was to parent a child not to recreate their own genetics.

Cory described the orphanage as “very clean and spotless.” Cory observed Boris walking around the orphanage; he would see a little piece of paper and pick it up.

With their surrogate having a life threatening medical diagnosis rendering her unable to carry a child, and a domestic adoption falling through on the very morning of Corys baby shower, they decided to instead adopt an older child from Russia.

“The little kids never have that kind of one-on-one attention,” Cory said. “The children call all the caretakers ‘Mom.’ There is one caretaker for every 50 kids. The caretakers are amazing; they love the kids and hold them and do the best they can. However, it is not the same as a mom and dad with undivided attention. One hundred kids per orphanage are separated into about 12 groups that sleep together.

The good Lord knows exactly what he is doing because all of these doors closing opened the most important door of all and lead Cory to her 2 amazing children. As fate would have it, her children, Boris and Nina were waiting for her the entire time. This is the incredible story of how Cory met her children. As they say, there are soul mates: we believe Boris and Nina are Cory’s Soul Children. “Bo was so shy and untrusting at first,” Cory recalled as she started telling me about the adoption of her two Russian children. “We were so worried to meet him. We traveled all night; we had to take an all-night train. It was in the middle of winter during a huge snowstorm—weirdest thing I have every experienced. It was in a small town near Sochi where the Olympics are going to be. The windows of the train were screwed shut so you couldn’t open them; you had to take a train instead

“When we arrived, little Boris was so scared. When I saw him, all I could think was, ‘Oh my God; he is so adorable!’” Within an hour, Boris was jumping on her and hugging her.

“Nina was six years old, a little older than Boris, when we brought her over. We would take her to a restaurant and she wasn’t sure what to do at first.” When she was still in Russia, Cory gave Nina a piece of gum. She was delighted and ran over to her curious friends. She hadn’t said a word to Cory yet because she did not speak English and Cory and her husband didn’t speak Russian. She took that one piece of gum and, speaking in Russian, she broke the spearmint gum into 10 pieces to share with her friends. “We kept Nina eating what she ate at the orphanage so she wouldn’t get sick. Soup, soup, and more soup is what they ate every day. Children raised in this orphanage are amazing and have grateful hearts.

“Pay it forward...” says Cory Everson

Sometimes you hear of children being adopted in the United States who are angry and sometimes ungrateful. I, in turn, am so grateful that I have never experienced any of that. I get birthday cards and mother’s day cards from Bo and Nina, always thanking me and my husband for adopting them. It is so amazing and emotional. “If I were ten years younger, I would go back for my third child. I told my husband I am going to get more dogs or adopt a 12-year-old.” Nina told Cory that when she has her own home, she is going to adopt two boys from Russia. “They have this very different mindset from most children. They are more mature and not spoiled. You could ruin all their kindness and graciousness by spoiling them, but I would never do that. “I let people know; I do not spoil my kids and they are grateful for everything. I raised them with the values my mother and father taught me: Work hard for what you want to achieve. “Boris is so beautiful with such a kind spirit. Currently he is a cadet for two different fire departments, a goalie on the water polo team, and a blocker for a volleyball team. He is so dyslexic it is not funny. Nevertheless, we laugh about it. “My daughter is the most amazing ballerina; it is insane, her dancing abilities. “I am always stopped and told how beautiful my kids are. It seemed a lot of the children in the orphanage were stunning. They’ve been asked to model. But I told them to learn the basics first. Later, if they want to model, they can do it and treat it like a job. Modeling doesn’t define you, and it doesn’t entitle you to anything. It is just a job and that is the way I want them to treat it if that that is something they want to do. But first things first. “Many people want to be their kids’ friends. Being a friend is secondary; being a parent is first. You are parenting them; we are strong people. Both my parents are from Germany; we were raised with nothing, basically. Both my parents were happy. “Nina wants to be a veterinarian or anesthesiologist. I am I not sure where she got that from,” Cory laughed. “Boris was thinking of being a veterinarian, too. We are absolute animal lovers in this house. Now he has really gotten into being a cadet for the fire department. So he has decided he would like to get into firefighting or become a paramedic. He is as strong as a bull and is only 15 years old, but amazingly strong. I couldn’t ask for healthier, stronger, more loving children. I can’t say that enough.”

Russian Adoption

Nightlight Christian Adoptions

nightlight.org

“We worked with Nightlight for adopting. We entered this process excited but really frightened. Thanks to Nightlight our fear was alleviated and we were left only to experience hope and excitement. We actually helped to get Nina’s best friend from the orphanage adopted. Leeza now lives only 20 miles away and the girls still get to see each other all the time. This family has had such a great experience they adopted 2 more and are now advocates to help other families adopt. I have a neighbor who met my kids and were so impressed with how well they adjusted and how wonderful they are that they too went to Russia to adopt another son. We have had such a blessed experience. I wish women would open their eyes to this option instead of thinking if they can’t have their own birth child they just won’t have a family at all. Those people are losing out of one the most incredible gifts in life...to be a parent. Afterall, do you want to recreate your own genetics or do you want to parent a child and be a Mom or Dad?”

My Mother and Sisters

“My family, my mom and sisters are inseparable...always were and always will be. I have come to realize you don’t need much to be happy as long as you have love. We grew up a family of 5 in a house with one shower. It didn’t bother us at all. My Dad passed away about five years ago. He was the most intelligent man I have ever known and would give the shirt off his back and help a neighbor before helping himself. When we visit my mom we enjoy helping her garden and landscape her yard, or prepare it for the winter. My son cuts down all the dead trees. My mom taught us to rely on ourselves to get things done so we do almost everything we can on our own. “

facing cancer like a

true cowgirl...

head on!

With her best friend and sister, Mare by her side, Trish can

face anything! The phone rang as I was driving to my doctor’s office. Because I was running a few minutes late, I was not surprised. However, when I saw the caller ID, I knew I had to answer the phone right away. Within a minute of my doctor telling me something I did not want to hear, his call was interrupted by another. I asked my doctor to hold, as the second caller was my radiologist, who, I would soon find out, was calling to confirm what my doctor was telling me. “Trish, you have cancer,” my radiologist said. I tried to search for a response as a tear slowly fell from my eye and rolled down my cheek and into my mouth. My heart felt as if it were collapsing inside my body. It is a feeling many women experience; I just never thought I would be one of those women. Opposite page: Trish “T” O’Neill Trish and Mare O’Neill Photography by: 57 Design

I can’t articulate the emotions that came over me as my doctor said again on the phone, “Cancer, Trish. You have breast cancer.”

I was able to get out a few questions, yet I knew that no matter what he told me, I could only hear the four words, “Trish, you have cancer.” I am a single mother of two boys. During my marriage and thereafter, I carried the weight of being the breadwinner in my family and supporting everyone, even after the dissolution of my marriage. The thought of having cancer was not the scary part of this diagnosis; it was the “How will I” questions that overwhelmed my thought process: How will I support my boys and pay my bills if I have cancer? How will I continue to work as a detective if I have cancer? I’ve been in law enforcement for 18 years—how will I keep my job if I have cancer? How am I going to tell my boys I have cancer? It was as if I were at the firing range dodging bullets. My mind was shooting out questions so fast, my heart was racing, and my palms were sweating. Yet at no point while I sat there did I ask myself, why me?

I have faced adversity my entire life. My self-perseverance and determination have always made me a stronger and better woman. However, working as a detective in a male-dominated field has also provided me with the skills and tools I need to keep my mind and body strong. Through my career, I’ve trained to fight through difficult situations and to never give up. I just never received the training that would prepare me for hearing the words repeating over and over again in my mind—I have cancer. I thought more tears would have flushed from my eyes, as I had not moved and was numb. I called my mom over and over, but she would not pick up the phone. I called my sister, Mare. After she answered the phone; I could not speak, the line was silent, but I knew I needed her more than ever, as our lives had immediately changed. Since then, I have embraced my cancer as a gift. This gift is my new journey in life—a journey that has taken me many places physically and spiritually. I have met some extraordinary people who have brightened my world. The support I have received from my friends and strangers is the fuel I use to inspire others. I would not wish this journey on anyone. However, my life has been blessed. I am thankful for the bad things in life, as they have opened my eyes to the good things I had never paid attention to before. I learned that life is given and should not be taken. As I share my story, I want to be remembered as someone who inspired others to be their authentic selves and to never give up because I didn’t give up. I am who I am for a reason. I received this gift so I could make a difference in people’s lives. I retired my gun and badge for my cowboy hat and surfboard. I joined m y sister, Mare, who has shared every wave on this journey, and launched Cowgirlz Surf—a unique and bold apparel line like no other. Every design tells part of my story, just as the logo is a symbol of my authentic self, captured with passion and artistry by 57design.com. Together, we have built the foundation for an empire to help support other kids who are riding the waves of their parents’ journeys. A percentage of our breast cancer Hope~Faith~Surf T-shirts will be donated to support kids’ riding the waves of cancer.

mare O’Neill Living with my sister and her cancer….. For my sister’s sake, it cannot be cancer. She is my rock. She is everything to me. I need to think positively. I know she will be fine. Trish and I did everything together. Growing up, we had our own sleepovers in each other’s rooms. We worked at Nordstrom in the shoe department, we went to college together, and we got our first jobs after college at Apple Inc. We married, had children close in age, and shared a nanny. We have so much left to do . . . . I answered my phone. I am quickly consumed with muffled words from a voice I knew to warm my heart and chase away my fears. I couldn’t understand what I was hearing. My name? Helpless cries? The word I feared most? I couldn’t accept what Trish was saying. How could our world have been shattered in mere seconds? Every day. Every minute. Every hour, I feel blessed to work beside my sister. I know we have made it to the other side, and we are both grateful. Our energy, our inner strength, and our bond move us to keep this fight and journey alive. Launching our clothing line has been an amazing experience. We have had the opportunity to meet so many extraordinary people along the way. We look forward to this new adventure, so stay tuned and check our website frequently. Gin Miller Creator of the “Step”, “Step Training” & “Step Reebok” As a kid, we all hung out on the playground – swinging, jumping, climbing and having fun. As we grew up we learned to sit still. We stopped playing around like monkeys and became pros in the art of sitting. As adults, most can’t pass 5 seconds on an elementary hang test. Gin has long lamented that the ability to pull from above was the one element missed in most group strength training programs. So when the Gin Miller Fitness Studio opened a little over a year ago, the T3 Life Tree became the centerpiece of the program. In researching the options, Gin decided to go with what we now just refer to as ‘the tree’. A solid piece of equipment made by BodyCraft, the T3 Life Tree is a sleek chin bar that comes equipped with many options for pulling, pushing, hanging and dangling. And from the basic elements, Gin has added a few of her own devices. The program has been developed to accommodate all levels, so if the thought of hanging upside down from your knees makes your head swim, no worries. For the deconditioned and/or feet-on-the-ground types, there are lots of options to get your workout. Run mostly as a circuit, strength moves are interspersed with cardio and at the end, you’ve hit it all. We have been running classes as 6 week small group training sessions and our clients are loving it! But to make it easier for more to join in on these fun and challenging workouts, we are now transitioning to a pass system. This will provide greater flexibility and convenience (and fill a few empty trees) and you can now purchase a pass and schedule your sessions online through our new reservation system.

About Gin Miller Gin Miller is one of the industry’s top professionals, best known as the innovative force behind the Step Training revolution – one of the most significant fitness phenomena of the last century. Her concepts and creativity laid the foundation for “step aerobics”, earning her the worldwide reputation as a preeminent fitness program creator and exercise professional. Gin currently runs her own company, Gin Miller Productions, LLC and serves as a consultant for corporations in wellness programming and fitness product development. Recent projects include product design, programming and inbox workouts for Fitness EM – a product developer for the Empower brand of home exercise equipment, available in major retailers nationwide.

If you are a returning client, we encourage you to go ahead and get the 18 class pass ($15 per class) and schedule in your regular time slot for the next 6 weeks. If you are interested in checking out the program, you can now go online to find openings and join us. Rates range from $20 for a single class to our best deal with the 18 class pass. Was there a certain moment in your life that made you really get into the field of nutrition? I decided to enter the fields of health, fitness, and nutrition at a young age. Early in my teenage years I, struggled with obesity, leading a lifestyle of physical inactivity and poor nutrition. I literally survived on double cheeseburgers, hot dogs, French fries, and whatever else I desired at any given time. My parents had no idea that I was eating this way and I didn’t know any better, nor did I care, until my overall appearance started to change. By the age of 14 my waistline had expanded out of control. My mother noticed and took action. She began to prepare healthier meals and encourage regular physical activity. Inspired at this age by the power of good eating habits and exercise, I decided to permanently implement both into my lifestyle. Ultimately, my love of health, fitness, and nutrition became my ticket to a successful and long-standing academic and professional career What’s the most challenging thing about dealing with nutrition in people that you’ve encountered? Over the years, I’ve found it quite challenging to encourage people to practice healthy eating habits in the long-term. Many people are motivated to modify their eating habits just for the sake of being “skinny” or due to other vanity-related concerns (i.e. belly fat). There is absolutely nothing wrong with having such motives. However, the vanity-motivated drive for eating better is oftentimes problematic because it can result in people taking extreme measures to lose weight that may be unhealthy and even toxic to the body (i.e. excessive dieting, starvation, supplement abuse). Furthermore, if people’s dietary habits are driven by vanity it can be rather difficult for them to maintain the motivation to continue these behaviors once their desired weight loss is achieved. What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had when working with nutrition in people? One of the most memorable moments I’ve had during my years of providing nutrition and weight management consulting was with a client who was initially over 100 pounds overweight. This client was especially unique because she survived on take-out food and was adamant about not changing her routine. I am a firm believer that people will maintain sensible eating habits so long as their daily routine is not severely disrupted. Therefore, in dealing with this client, I was

forced to examine healthy food options at nearly every fast-food chain and restaurant around. It was quite a challenge to say the least but, with her input, I was able to make dietary recommendations to suit her nutritional needs without significantly interrupting her normal eating patterns. Under my guidance she lost nearly all the excess weight in one year. In what ways would you like to see the world be impacted by good nutrition? I would love to see the global obesity epidemic conquered by a coupling of good nutrition and physical activity. Being overweight or obese increases the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. Good nutrition is an enabler of good health and essential for weight management. Therefore, it is absolutely crucial that people eat better and move more in order to improve their quality of life. As a researcher, educator, and advocate, I continually seek to provide people with the resources and guidance necessary for achieving and maintaining good nutrition and a physically active lifestyle, indefinitely. What’s an important tidbit or fact you think everyone should know about nutrition? When it comes to nutrition and personal patterns of healthy eating, you shouldn’t be too rigid. You can bend the rules that may have been instilled in your head over time (i.e. eating 5-6 meals a day, eating breakfast every day, eating late). Contrary to popular belief, when it comes to good nutrition it does not matter how many meals you eat in one day, what time of day you eat them, or how small or large your meals are. Everyone has different food preferences, schedules and lifestyles. Ultimately, what matters is your total food intake and nutrition quality over the course of the day. A plethora of research has proven that you can eat anywhere from 1 to 7 meals a day so long as you are: 1) obtaining adequate amounts of protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water, and 2) meeting, but not overshooting, your daily calorie requirement. The name of St. Moritz is so popular today that it has been registered as a trademark and protected internationally. The St. Moritz brand is known worldwide as a quality brand for style, elegance and class .

Michelle Brown With this new lifestyle I set out for a new goal wanting to take my nutrition knowledge and athletic capabilities to another level. I competed in my first Body Building Figure Competition in May of 2008, taking a 2nd and 3rd place trophy to now where I am a National Level Competitor looking to get my Pro Card next season.

An average person taking on a program of working out and eating healthy can see results fairly quickly. Depending on your starting point you can see results in as little as a couple weeks.

Education:

I recommend cardio and strength training together. That is the most effective. Remember strength training is not only lifting weights. You can use body weight for strength training as well… you do not need a gym.

Roc Doc Certified - Rock Tape Certified Specialist C.P.T. - Certified Personal Trainer - NASM F.N.S - Fitness Nutrition Specialist - NASM -National Association of Sports medicine CPR/AED Certified A.A. Degree - Liberal Arts -Ohlone College I have also worked in the medical field as a Medical Assistant in an Orthopedic office, Physical Therapy Aide, and a Chiropractic assistant. Assisting people to get back to an active life has always been in me. Now I’m here to help you! ____________________________________________________ 1.) How long have you been into weightlifting? I have been an athlete since very young. I did some strength training in high school but I did not get into lifting until 1997. I hired my first Personal Trainer and found out what a real workout was. I loved it. I then got into the Bodybuilding world in 11/2007 when I decided to do my first Figure competition in May of 2008. 2.) What are the pitfalls people who are starting a new routine fall into? The pitfalls or speed bumps people tend to run into usually have to do with expectations and consistency. Many people have high expectations when they finally decide to take on a new program. It is the expectation of how quickly results will be noticed that throws them off. Once starting a nutrition plan or workout plan (or both) you first need to ramp up, then stay on the path consistently for results to show. It is also true that most people do not know understand how to create a plan that will deliver the results they are looking for. This is why it is important to at least consult with a professional so you can get the desired results. 3.) Is there a difference with people who have worked out in the past to people who are just starting for the first time? B.) Which if any is easier. There is some difference. Of course you have heard of muscle memory. This will be helpful as once a muscle is used to perform a certain way (as lifting weights) it will remember and adapt slightly faster since it is a known activity to the body. That being said, many things can be factored in such as genetics, diet, weight, age, etc. Starting can be tough as is anything new you start. Just keep it going and it will get easier. 4.) How long does it take an average person to see results?

5.) Should a person just do cardio to lose weigh then add weights?

6.) Realistically, how long would it take a determined motivated person to lose 50lbs? They religiously eat and workout as instructed without any cheating. First it would depend on the persons start weight. It is much more difficult for someone that starts off at a lower weight vs someone with a good amount of weight to lose. With that being said, a good rule is 2lbs per week. Lets say 8-10lbs per month is a good loss for someone on a nutrition program that is also following a workout routine involving cardio and strength training. 7.) Name your ‘Top Three’ necessary foods (beverages/supplements etc.) a person should not go without. Top 3 foods: Complex carbs – oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potatoes Protein – lean protein – chicken, turkey, fish Fats – healthy fats – avocado, nuts, olive oil Top 3 Supplements: Multi Vitamin – people rarely get in all the nutrients they need from food Omegas – EFA’s (essential fatty acids) Optimal for good health Protein – since many are deficient in protein intake this is a great way to supplement 8.) What sets you apart as a Personal Trainer/Nutritionist/ Coach? The main characteristic that sets me apart is my heart. I care about my clients and the goals that they have. Their goals become mine and we strive toward those goals together. I am not only there to put them through a workout. I am their accountability partner, friend, entertainer, and frustration buster. We achieve the clients goals while making the workout fun. 9.) Does lifting heavy weights make you bulky? NO! I hear this from many people. To get bulky you have to lift very heavy and eat a lot of the right foods to get that way. To build lean muscle it takes time. Certain exercises coupled with a strict diet can create lean muscle. Lifting weights can help you build muscle but that does not make you thick and bulky. 10.) Is a low carb diet the best way to lose weight? Not necessarily. Everyone’s body is different and depending on the goal and what the performance level is will vary the amount of carbs needed for an individual. Typically lower carbs can help reduce weight, but that does not mean no carbs. Proper carbohydrates are needed for brain and body function. A customized, well thought out, and balanced plan should be designed for each individual to insure proper nutrients are delivered to the body.

Joe Grasso At the tender age of 8, Joe Grasso began his influential immersion into the world of fitness. Lifting up to 10 hours a day, it became apparent that Joe would excel physically in many aspects of life, not to mention positively impact the lives of others. By his senior year in high school, Joe weighed in at a lean, well built 220 pounds. He possessed the admirable ability to bench the 220-pound stack 54 times, do one- armed incline bicep curls with 150 pound dumbbells, complete the mile run in 5:15, and easily run 20 miles at a 7-minute mile pace. After high school, Joe continued heavy training, NEVER resorting to performance enhancer’s such as steroids or growth hormones. Joe even found a way to translate his talent through a career-oriented setting. He began a program of self defense which included karate, full contact martial arts, and jiu jitsu. Later, he became a police officer and specialized as a beat officer, a training officer, and a violent crime team (gang unit) detective. Joe obtained real life combat experience in the street, as he successfully handled and diffused numerous violent encounters. In 1989, Joe emerged as the first person in United States to initiate a private, professional training facility, which leveraged into high end personal training. Joe’s techniques, which he pioneered as a child, brought incredible results to clients. One of his clients shed 5-7 inches off of his waist in a mere 10 visits, while another acquired 8 pounds of lean muscle in only 3 weeks. Skeptics decried that these results were impossible to obtain, however several clients endorsed the reality of Joe’s techniques and word quickly spread. Consequently, corporate executives from around the world flew in to get trained by Joe. After achieving certification as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and becoming an American Council On Exercise Certified Personal Trainer, Joe hired trainers to work under his tutelage. Joe Grasso trains Cain Velasquez is an American mixed martial artist fighting in the Ultimate Fighting Championship where he is a two-time and current UFC Heavyweight Champion. He is currently ranked the No. 1 heavyweight in the world by Sherdog.

Once professional athletes began demanding Joe’s training services in 1997, he obtained his current 6,000 sq. ft. location in San Jose, CA.

Joe’s success did, however, meet a brief hiatus in 2001. After suffering a faulty chiropractic manipulation of the neck, Joe was left severely paralyzed without the use of his right arm. Miraculously, spinal surgery and therapeutic strength training afforded Joe the use of his right arm again, far beyond what experienced surgeons projected for him. By 2004, OnFitness Magazine, a premier international fitness training magazine, rated Joe’s Training Facility the #1 Personal Training Facility in the USA. Since his initial opening, Joe has personally supervised and/or trained over 350,000 individual hour workout sessions. Today, Joe Grasso Elite Training continues its longstanding history as a first-rate training facility for an eclectic range of clientele. A normal session at Joe Grasso Elite Training might very well include the neighborhood housewife and, simultaneously, the likes of a competitive UFC Champion. Silicon Valley Professionals, their spouses and children, stars from the bay area, world champion fighters, Olympic Athletes, college and high school stars, as well as people with medical needs are amoung the successful group of clients that makes Joe Grasso Elite Training a regular part of their life. About Joe Grasso Elite Training: Much like any other profound innovation, Joe Grasso Elite Training began with one tenacious individual and a simple idea. At a young age, Joe Grasso commenced his extensive journey of weight and fitness training, that would revolutionize the way both fitness moguls and everyday folks regard training. By trade marking what he referred to as “Explosive Power Training,” Joe Grasso developed a weight training technique that refined muscle and shed body fat in an astronomically faster timeframe than most weight training plans. As a result of his innovation, it was only natural that Joe’s technique initiated the first appointment only, private personal fitness training facility in the United States. While the concept of private training pervades fitness centers across the country today, this idea can be credited to Joe Grasso, who developed a 1,500 square foot training facility on the entire top floor of his home in 1989. At this time, Joe’s business was referred to as “Power Bodies,” since his training yielded miraculous fat loss and increased strength.

By 1994, Joe focused his energy on acquiring the chops that he would need to leverage his selfproclaimed technique to the masses. Joe became a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the National Strength & Conditioning Association, as well as a Certified Personal Trainer through the American Council on Exercise. It wasn’t long before executives and their family members sought the expertise of Joe and his groundbreaking technique. Joe employed his weight training technique on the corporate executives, athletes, and children that became his regular clientele. The results were evident, fast, and, more importantly, long term. As the demand, and notoriety, for Joe’s technique had wildly grown, he received critical acclaim from “OnFitness Magazine” in 2004. Rated as the #1 Personal Training ONLY Facility in the United States, Joe’s “Explosive Power Training” had become a national phenomenon. As a side project in 2007, Joe aided in the creation of DontByllyMyKids.com, making national headlines on Fox National News Live. This new program offered an educational solution to thwart the real-life bullying outbreak that rampantly pervades our schools and college campuses Joe Grasso Elite Training finally took its place in San Jose, California by 2009, where Joe Grasso continues to thrive on the “Explosive Power Training” that he developed as a child. Training individuals varying from housewives, to professional athletes, and corporate executives, Joe Grasso has proven that his techniques can be customized and applied to anyone who simply wishes to make a change in themselves for the better. Joe continues his elite training today with many World Ranked Professional Mixed Martial Artists, who are referred to him by legendary trainer of champions, Javier Mendez (owner of the world-renowned American Kick Boxing Academy). One of Joe’s most notable clients is the likes of UFC Heavyweight Champion, Cain Velasquez, who credits Joe with the ability to fight larger opponents. However, the training that Joe provides certainly does not discriminate! Proving effective for both BEGINNERS and PROFESSIONALS, Joe’s technique will not only change your body, but it will also change your life!

Your

Worst MOment CAN BE

JUST THE BEGINNING At the age of sixteen, I stood motionless in my bedroom behind a closed door, staring down at the shag carpet. By today’s standards, that carpet was horrifically ugly— long shag, mostly yellow with orange and browns mixed in. It also might have been the last thing I ever saw.

decision not to pull the trigger, I learned to believe in myself. I found the inner strength to put my life on a completely different path. My goal is to help people make the changes they need to find happiness and success. I want people to find the inner strength to overcome obstacles and succeed.

I raised my hand and put the barrel in my mouth. I cocked the gun’s hammer back, locking it into firing position. I put my thumb on the trigger. But—I didn’t fire. Why? And why was I contemplating this in the first place?

We may not be able to change the entire world, but we certainly have the power to change ourselves. Each one of us has the potential to become a better person, father, mother, husband, wife, son or daughter. Once we unlock that potential within ourselves, we can help unlock that potential within others. “Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you’ll find one at the end of your arm. . . . As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands. One for helping yourself, the other for helping others” (Audrey Hepburn). Truly words to live by.

Nothing in life has been handed to me. For the past twenty-three years I have been a police officer. In September 2013, I had the honor of publishing my book, Decoding Your Past: A Guide to Happiness and Success Through Self-Understanding. With that followed my online magazine, Rob R. Morris. These opportunities have given me the platform to start motivational speaking on making change and overcoming fear. The most important thing I have learned is that we all have the ability to change—to become something great. The power lies within each of us whether we realize it or not. Too often we get caught up in life’s vicious cycles. People spend years in these cycles, never realizing their potential to overcome them. My focus now is to help people overcome the fear and resistance in their lives and to reach people who find themselves in desperate situations like I was at the young age of sixteen. After I made the conscious

Since writing my book, I have had some amazing opportunities. This has given me the courage to write my second book, called Opposite Man, due to release in late 2014. I have also teamed up with Victoria Napolitano of Hopelessly Romantic Media Productions for an exciting project: Tac Up Fitness. All this proves to me that that moment back in 1996 wasn’t ever meant to be the end of my story. Rather, it has been the beginning. Visit Rob Morris’s website at: www.RobRMorris.com.

My name is Ryan Lazalier. I am a family man, entrepreneur and photographer out of Sacramento, California. The first time I picked up a lens was almost 3 years ago. Prior to that, I modelled for a several years. I fell in love with the art of modelling. It has helped to develop me into the photographer I am, today. My experience on this side of the lens has given me the understanding on how important branding. I am easy to work with and have a great understanding of how important being professionally creative can be to a business or individual. What is your background in modelling? I modelled for 6 years, but did not pursue it professionally. I was contracted for a few commercials that include: SUBWAY, CACHE CREEK CASINO, and AMTRAK. In addition, I was published on the EMBASSY SUITES website. Do you travel for photo shoots? Yes, I will travel globally for the right venue. Do you have a team you work with or do you work solo? I am a solo artist, yet have a select group of assistants that often come out to help. What should a model know before contacting you? I am very professional and ethical. I will not shoot anything distasteful that would destroy my own image. I only work with individuals that are committed and hardworking. Lastly, I like to have fun so be ready to laugh and have a good time when shooting with me! What is your contact information? RyanLazalier.com Opposite page: Photography: Andrea Michelle

Almost every shoot encompasses a walk, run, hike, climb or bicycle ride through some of natures’ most powerful elements. Every shoot has a story behind it; but more importantly, it holds memories that Javier will reflect upon as he looks back at the images. His goal is to promote and share the beauty of nature and its elements. His approach is to take the viewer with him as he captures the scene as he sees it. The Symbolism of Intimacy Within Dreams

T

here are times when various kinds of intimate activity occurring within our dreams may refer to waking life experiences, but this is not always the case. Oftentimes, scenarios that involves closeness, holding hands, kissing and lovemaking can be symbolic of the ways in which we may be growing acquainted with certain parts of ourselves that we haven’t been very familiar with up until now. In the outer world, the sexual act is a union on the physical level. Within our dreams it can depict union with deeper aspects of our psychic reality, and part of our process of becoming more whole in a psychological sense. Sometimes our dreams can reflect this process in ways that seem scandalous to our conscious minds. It’s important to remember that while we’re dreaming we enter into a realm that is not structured around the taboos and social mores of waking life. We may dream of intimate experiences with people who we’d never be involved with in real life, such as family members or people much older or younger than ourselves; we may witness kinds of sensual activity that would normally repulse us and yet have a completely different sort of feeling reaction to it within the dream. This is because such dreams are revealing psychic realities, not necessarily commenting on our daily life and relationships in the world. Sometimes our dreams may draw us into certain scenarios precisely because we would never act out such experiences in our waking lives. This affords us the opportunity to visit certain regions of our inner life that aren’t touched by any of our normal experiences. For example,

you might dream of being sexually involved with someone other than your partner (if you are in a monogamous relationship). This could provoke new and unfamiliar feelings, for the simple fact that the experience is happening outside the bounds of how you would typically allow yourself to act during your waking hours. You could then connect with that feeling and perhaps relate to new dimensions of your reallife relationship thanks to the dream. Other dream occurrences of a sensual nature may have nothing to do with outer world experiences. These may symbolize the act of reaching new thresholds of consciousness and making contact with repressed – or newly-emerging – aspects of yourself. Oftentimes a deeper level of self-acceptance can lead a dreamer to intimate dream encounters that symbolize the increased intimacy with self that he or she has attained. The feeling response that any dream elicits from a dreamer is always the surest clue as to the meaning and import behind the symbolism that it is using. Intimate dreams do not always signify depth experiences and/or self-acceptance. A sexually-charged dream scenario that leaves a dreamer with an unsettling feeling may actually be warning of unhealthy attachments, either internally or in the outer world (the two will oftentimes be closely connected anyhow). Dreams that carry emotional warmth and a feeling of affirmation, however, often represent an opening into hitherto-unplumbed depths within a dreamer’s psyche. They uncover a lot of emotional terrain that can then be explored and reclaimed.

Gorgeous Lingerie and Blissful Moments

W

hen you think of lingerie, what words come to mind? Do you think sexy, playful, or romantic? Or do you think functional, practical, or necessary? Perhaps you don’t really think about your lingerie as you slip it on, but rather, you simply think about what you’re wearing to work or class and select a bra and panties to match. Gorgeous lingerie, however, can be a crucial part of creating blissful moments throughout your life. Many women spend countless hours at the hair salon, the nail salon, and the spa. Why shouldn’t they spend just as many hours selecting the perfect lingerie to complement their skin tones, hair color, and figure? Gorgeous lingerie has a purpose in life that is more important than covering those personal features of your bodies that no one but your loved one should see. Fortunately for the women of today, lingerie certainly has come a long way from the days when white was the popular color choice and practicality was the key feature. From demi cup bras to French cut panties to teddies to camis to thongs and more, women’s undergarments have entered a new age and instead of plain and ugly, these items have become gorgeous lingerie designed for women of all ages and shapes to wear. Truthfully though, lingerie or a woman’s undergarments or lack thereof has always been a sensual aspect of a woman’s attire. Just as candid a point would be the fact that although many men don’t have the first clue as to what the difference is among brassieres, balconettes, or bustier is, surely each one of these men appreciates the look that these garments achieve once donned by a woman. The lingerie a woman selects says a lot about the woman she is or wants to be during that particular moment in time. In fact, women can choose lingerie according to the mood they are in or according to the mood they wish to be in. Who a

woman is going to be on any particular day can be influenced by her most intimate garments. She can select undergarments to boost her self-confidence or to create a feeling of desirability and sexiness. In fact, donning gorgeous lingerie before starting any day can be an instant aphrodisiac that lasts long after that initial moment. Women can pamper themselves with different types of gorgeous lingerie, created with all kinds of fabrics and in a multitude of colors. The sheer variety to be found in the lingerie department of any store or in a store dedicated solely to women’s undergarments offers endless opportunities to craft any ordinary day into one of sheer bliss and romance. While it might not be common to consider the fact that sexy lingerie offers a sense of romance, the fact is simply that it does. Truly, nothing has more power over a woman and the way she feels than the lingerie she wears. Wearing beautiful undergarments can provide a sense of energy or power along with an uplifting feeling of self-confidence that generates from a sense of feeling beautiful, partly due in fact to the gorgeous look of the lingerie a woman selects to wear. From enchanted evenings of sensual bliss with the one she loves to seductive nights with the one she wants to love, a woman can shape her love life and create a sense of romance with her selection of silky, sexy lingerie. What a woman wears might not actually define who a woman is, but it certainly goes a long way in creating a mood that permeates her existence. Gorgeous lingerie might be part of a woman’s arsenal of intimate undergarments and it might not. However, if she wants the blissful moments of romance and love so often portrayed in movies and written about in romance novels, gorgeous lingerie should be a constant feature in her wardrobe.

The Importance of Romance in Relationships

P

eople often get weighed down by the responsibilities of daily life. As a result, their relationships suffer and get placed on the back burner. Romance is important to keep the flames burning. It’s nice to know that your partner does care even if he doesn’t always have time to show it. Being tired and overworked can make us short-tempered even with those we love the most. Sometimes we just don’t pay enough attention to them because our minds are preoccupied with work and worry. But the wonderful thing about romance is that it doesn’t have to be time-consuming. If you have a few moments to spare, you can be romantic.

spur of the moment when she is least expecting it. You don’t have to be especially creative to do something fun. Surprise her at work and take her out to lunch or come home early and prepare dinner. Bring her flowers and a card. If she asks what the occasion is, tell her that just being with her makes every day a special occasion.

Sending flowers and writing love poems may not be the most creative forms of romance these days, but they are tried and true traditional forms of romance that still work. You don’t have to rent a hot air balloon for a romantic lunch. Pack a lunch You may think that you don’t have a romantic bone and bring along a blanket for a romantic lunch in in your body, but this is not true. Anyone can be the park. The important thing is to remind her romantic. If you are a loving partner and you ap- how much she means to you. No, she doesn’t have preciate what your partner does for you, then you to hear it all the time, but doing something speare well on your way to being romantic. Romance cial once in a while is a nice reminder. Romance is comprised of love and gratitude. It does have doesn’t have to be elaborate or costly; it can be as one tricky component and that is creativity. It is simple as leaving a rose or a note that says “I love creativity that most people lack when trying to be you,” on her pillow. Romance works both ways, so romantic. However, you can make up for a lack of women can also do romantic things for their men creativity with simple spontaneity. Do something as well. So, keep the fires of your relationship burnfun and special for your significant other on the ing bright with simple gestures that show you care.

25 Easy and Inexpensive Ways to Show Your Partner How Much You Love Him eeping the romance alive in your relationship can be difficult when you have a hectic career or a family to take care of, and even when you have the time you may not have the money to make extravagant gestures. Fortunately, with a little thoughtfulness and creativity, you can quickly and easily show your partner how much you love him without spending a fortune. Why not start with one of these ideas?

K

1) Write a short note telling your partner that you love him, and add one reason why you do. Hide it in his coat pocket, briefcase, book bag, or any other place in which he is likely to find it when he is not with you. 2) Without being asked, give him a cold drink after a long hot day at work, or a hot drink when he comes in from the cold. 3) Make an easy sacrifice to spend a little more time with him (for example, maybe you could record your favorite TV show, and use that extra time to partake in a shared hobby with your partner). 4) Design a custom made mug for him (you can do this online for a relatively low price). You might pick a picture of the two of you together, a quote that he really likes, or anything else that only someone who knows him extremely well would select. 5) Go for a walk together in a picturesque location, holding hands and appreciating the scenery. 6) Every day for a month (or for however long you like) write down a couple of sentences about something your partner did that you appreciated or that made you feel particularly affectionate. You can then give him the entire collection in a notebook on a birthday or anniversary, or perhaps just at any time that you feel like showing him how much you love him. 7) Compile a list of 100 things that you love about your partner (and if you are artistically inclined, you can illustrate the list with little cartoons of the two of you together). 8) Take a tip from teenagers and make him a mix CD or a play list of new songs that he hasn’t heard and that you think he will like. Alternatively, make him a CD or play list of songs that mean something to you as a couple. 9) Tell him that he is as attractive to you as he was when you first met, mentioning a few of your favorite features of his appearance. 10) Make him breakfast in bed one day at the weekend, and be sure to include all of his favorite breakfast foods. 11) Whisper in his ear that you love the smell of his skin or hair.

12) Take a little time to sit down together and look through some photographs from an important time in your life (perhaps a holiday, a wedding, the early days of your dating, or anything else that comes to mind). 13) If he is busier than you are at some particular time, try to do more than your fair share of chores so that he has more time to relax. 14) If you have any musical skills, learn to play some songs together (for example, you might sing while he plays guitar). If you alone have musical skills, you could learn to play or sing one of his favorite songs and surprise him by performing it. 15) Take a hot bubble bath together (either candlelit or with the lights down low), then just relax and enjoy the peace and quiet for half an hour or so. 16) In public, give him a self-esteem boost by saying something complimentary about one of his qualities or abilities. 17) Buy him a small gift related to his favorite hobby (for example, if he loves golf then you could just buy him a bag of golf tees, or if he is interested in photography you could get him a new magazine that details the best new equipment, software and techniques). The goal is to show him that you support and care about his interests, even if you don’t share them. 18) When you are apart, send him a random text message that features one thing that you love about him or one thing that you can’t wait to do with him. 19) Instead of buying a birthday or anniversary card at a store, create a homemade card for him. 20) When he is doing something boring such as washing dishes or tidying, walk up behind him and give him a tender hug with your arms wrapped around his chest. After a moment, kiss his neck or the back of his head, tell him that you love him, and then let him get back to whatever he was doing. 21) Write him an email or a letter that describes ten of your favorite moments that you have experienced together. 22) Even if you have no time to make a gourmet meal or go out for a romantic dinner, set your dining table up for romance (with some pretty candles and some nice background music). 23) Encourage him to collect tickets, photographs, receipts and other items that you acquire as you proceed through your relationship, and start sticking them into a scrapbook. 24) Sit down together and make a list of things that you want to do together within the next year (this might include places you want to visit, new hobbies you want to take up, or things you want to change about your life or home).

5 Tips for Flawless Skin and the Perfect Complexion

H

aving flawless-looking skin and an even complexion is the ideal for many women. Unfortunately, for most women, flawless skin does not come easily. Many women struggle to control dry, greasy or spot-prone skin, while others battle with uneven skin tone, pigmentation and skin texture. Fortunately, most of these problems can be fixed, or at least improved, with a few small steps. Try these 5 tips for flawless skin and the perfect complexion. Tea Tree Oil One of the most common skin problems affecting the appearance and complexion of skin is unsightly spots. Spots and blackheads are a recurring problem for many people. They can be caused by a variety of factors, including poor diet, acne and certain health conditions. Tea tree oil is one of the most effective treatments for spots and blackheads. Dab a little tea tree oil directly on to the spot and leave to dry. For spot-prone skin, try using a facial wash containing tea tree oil, as this can help to prevent spots from forming. Mud Masks Regular use of mud masks can make a huge difference to your complexion. Mud masks provide a deep clean for your pores, helping to prevent spots and other skin problems, while also softening and conditioning your skin. Choose mud face masks that contain natural ingredients, wherever possible, and try to avoid those with added perfume or artificial colours.

Exfoliation Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and leaves your skin texture smooth and even. It also helps to ensure a clean and smooth base for cosmetics. There are many commercial exfoliators and exfoliating kits available to help keep your skin in good condition. Alternatively, you can mix some sea salt or fine sugar with a little oil, and then use the mixture as a natural exfolient. Olive Oil Olive oil contains properties that help to soften and moisturise the skin. It also contains powerful antioxidants that help to neutralise the effects of pollutants on your skin. Regular application of olive oil can greatly improve the condition of your skin, especially if you are struggling with dry skin conditions. Apply a thin layer of olive oil and allow the oil to absorb in to your skin. Cosmetics There is a wide range of cosmetics available to help cover imperfections and provide a flawless look to your skin. For some people, a simple blemish stick may be enough to even out minor imperfections, while other people may prefer to use foundation for complete coverage. Whatever you choose to apply to your skin, it is essential to first exfoliate and soften your skin, as this will give you the best possible base for your make up. Experiment with different cosmetics until you find the products best suited to your needs.

Beside Every Wealthy Man is a Smart Woman

ooking to find a rich man to shower you with affection, and more importantly, luxury? There are a few simple ways to stand out in a crowd, especially when your target is a wealthy man. Entrance him, and show yourself off as woman worth pursuing by using these methods.

L

The number one pitfall of a less-moneyed woman working to catch the eye of a wealthy man is overkill. It’s tempting to want to showcase your most expensive brand names, best jewelry, and newest hairstyles constantly to get that wanted attention. A much more effective method is to imitate the wealthy women this man is accustomed to being around. Rather than being the glitzy showgirl, tone your style down a few notches. As Coco Chanel said, “take one thing off before you leave the house.” Edit your style to mimic high-end clothing and accessories. Choose neutral colors, clean lines, and simple statement jewelry. Presenting yourself as a polished, confident woman will win every time over coming in as someone struggling to show off every nice thing she owns all at once. Making an impact is less chance and more legwork. An effective way to make an impression on a wealthy man is to have your facts straight. Before you ever meet a wealthy man, make sure you’ve done your homework on him and his lifestyle. Get familiar with his general social circle and the places they frequent. Read restaurant reviews and know a few things about the latest music, theatre, and cultural events going on. Having a little background allows you to effortlessly join conversations while coming across as informed and educated. When socializing with wealthy men, use your graces to their best impact. A foolproof plan is to always be thoughtful and polite at the outset. As you get to know the man or men in question, work in more personal humor and opinions. Good manners and active listening skills will get you miles ahead of the competition. Smile, make eye contact, and hold yourself proudly. Gracious behavior sets you apart as a woman worth getting to know. The goal is attracting a wealthy man, and the process takes some effort. Boundaries are a huge part of singling yourself out as woman who can manage the unique re-

lationship and lifestyle involved in socializing with men with money. Let a man know you enjoy his attentions, and be genuine in relishing your time together. Compliment him on the things you like about him, and accept his flattery as well. Use clear boundaries to let him know that as much as you like his company, you need time for yourself as well. Be straightforward when making plans. Accept his invitations that work for you, but decline if they seem to be coming at a stifling rate. In the long run, letting him know you value your own time distinguishes you as a person in your own right and inspires in him a desire to get to know more about you and your interests. Boundaries are not just emotional, but physical. When a woman sets out to attract a particular man, especially a rich one, it is naïve to think that sex isn’t part of the picture. Sexual attraction is one of the main things that will keep a man coming back for more. By presenting yourself thoughtfully, you can create a fulfilling sexual situation that also increases your chances of your wealthy catch staying around. It’s tempting to want to be the first woman to the bedroom when a wealthy man is on the scene. Keep in mind that many rich men are accustomed to advances from women with dollar signs in their eyes. Make yourself unique, not by shunning sexual advances from a man, but responding in a more effective way. Let him know with your body language and with your comments that you are attracted to him physically. Be proud of your own body and sexuality, but also carry yourself with dignity. Old fashioned rules are not necessary anymore, but be choosy about when you sleep together and in what context it occurs. Demand, sweetly, that some time and effort be put into your intimate occasions. By holding yourself to some personal standards, you are letting your man know once again that you are worth his pursuits and will offer dazzling rewards for his amorous efforts. Attracting a wealthy man isn’t all about forethought and rules. Remembering to be you is crucial. Just because you are purposely choosing and planning how to present yourself does not diminish the fact that it is yourself you are presenting. Take an inventory of what you think your best qualities are, and work those in to your conversations. Maximize in your talents and skills to enchant your wealthy man once you have established a basic connection. Your goal is not only to attract, but to keep a rich man in your life. Being you, only better, will pay off handsomely.

Five Top Hair Care Secrets You Need to Know

W

hen a woman sees something she likes in another woman, such as great hair, she often sets out to copy it. Women are competitive, especially where their hair is concerned. Most every woman wants the shiniest, most stylish hair she can have. She might buy multiple products and undergo multiple treatments just to get that head of hair she longs for. When a woman discovers great hair care tricks, she might not want to let her secret out lest anyone else outdo her. Fortunately, though, most secrets are discoverable since there are so many great hair care products available. New hair care products are developed every day to meet most every hair care need there is. Knowing which ones will suit your hair best may be a matter of experimenting on your own, speaking with a hair care provider, or gaining advice from a hair stylist. Here are a few product tips to try: 1. Especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors, a product rich in UV absorbers will help protect your hair’s color and condition from the sun’s harmful rays. 2. If you blow dry or flat iron your hair frequently, a product containing heat-protecting polymers will keep it from drying out and breaking. 3. Encourage fresh growth and vitality with conditioners containing free-radical quenching antioxidants. 4. Retain your color as long as possible with a color resistant shampoo or by using a dry shampoo which lessens the number of times your hair is washed. 5. A post-washing sealant that is rich in botanicals and moisturizing agents will also help lock in color. Having a great cut and color is of prime importance, but keeping hair healthy is equally important. Great looking hair can make a woman the envy of all those around her. Try some great products for yourself and enjoy the new look at feel they give you. Become the woman others want to emulate.

5 Ways to Boost Your Communication Skills ommunication skills govern just about everything we do in life whether it is dating, job seeking or bargaining. Improving your communication skills can lead to a great improvement in your quality of life. They can help you to succeed in just about every area of both your working and personal life. However, none of us are born with good communication skills and, while they might seem to come naturally to some, most of us need to take some extra steps to overcome our inhibitions and build up our confidence through better communication.

C

3 – Keep Eye Contact Body language and eye contact account for the majority of communication. Even if you are able to speak confidently and get your point across, you won’t come across is very sincere if you do not maintain eye contact and appear relaxed and at peace with your thoughts and what you are saying. Avoiding eye contact makes you look either shy or insincere and those you are talking to will often notice this and not take you seriously. Likewise, let your body language reflect what you are trying to say and speak with passion by believing in yourself. 4 – Don’t Interrupt

1 – Become a Better Listener Even if you do not feel at all confident in yourself, you can start improving your communication skills by becoming a better listener and learning to avoid distractions when someone is talking to you. Everyone appreciates a good listener, even if you don’t have much to say in return. Listening can help you to learn and build up your confidence from that of others. Be present in the conversation and avoid getting lost in your own thoughts. You will always have time to reflect later on.

Most of us know someone who constantly interrupts and there are few things more annoying when trying to hold a conversation and get a point across. It often comes down to the aforementioned point regarding respect for the opinion of others. Sometimes, interrupting is justified but, where there is mutual respect and an attempt to understand each other, there is rarely any case for interrupting. Wait for your turn to speak! This is important in just about any conversation whether during a first date or a job interview.

2 – Respect the Opinions of Others

5 – Accept Constructive Criticism

Many arguments are caused by a lack of respect for the opinions of others. Of course, there is also a fine line between opinion and plain offensiveness and everyone draws this line in a slightly different place. Nonetheless, try to give others the time of day to say what they have to say and don’t be afraid of responding with constructive criticism in situations where it is appropriate. No two people will ever agree on everything, but being able to hold your own in a constructive argument will help immeasurably in boosting your confidence and communication skills.

Criticism hurts sometimes even to the point of inspiring rage. However, we all have our faults and it is important to learn to recognize these. Again, there is also a fine line between constructive criticism and an angry rant and, at times, everyone will have difficulty defining the variation. Accepting constructive criticism does not mean that you necessarily need to agree with it; it just means that you have to be prepared to be open to the views of others. Don’t be afraid to retort if you have something constructive to say back.

Born in Venice, Italy, had my earlier cooking experience while helping my maternal grandfather making fresh pasta and gnocchi for the big Sunday lunch where all the family would gather around the table for a several courses (and hours...) meal. With a great source of fresh ingredients like the markets in Venice the palate of Cristiano was soon trained to many flavours each season would bring. And are still the seasons that inspire my menu along with fresh local specialties and the relation-

ship I like to build with artisan suppliers in whichever part of the world I happen to be. My studies in London were the beginning of my international career that so far brought me to cook and run kitchens in 8 different countries around the world, from tropical islands to multicultural cities. Having worked for some of the best hotels chains has given me opportunity to cook for Royals, Presidents, Movie stars, sports stars and most importantly for my local regular clients. “Cooking is an expression of who we are and the experiences we have been through

Victoria napolitano “vision” and “focus” are more than just clichés. VictoriaNapolitano.com

F

or Victoria Napolitano, the words “vision” and “focus” are more than just clichés. The young girl who dreamed of serving and protecting her community in a male-dominated domain like law enforcement could certainly be described as a visionary. And when that dreamer earned two college degrees and graduated achiever to overachiever as a decorated detective with the San Jose Police Department, few could dispute her focus. But it was when Victoria Napolitano’s vision was lost—literally—that her true essence was revealed. An on-duty accident would not only cost this once-vibrant 14-year department veteran her eyesight, but it would bring an end to her career and her marriage and leave her in financial ruin. It was through adversity and the temporary loss of eyesight that Victoria had perhaps her greatest vision: a media empire that would focus on the many aspects of health, beauty, fitness, and spiritual and emotional well-being. With the help and support of her business partner, Dave Storton, Victoria’s vision today has grown into Hopelessly Romantic Media Productions, a multifaceted online oasis of experiences from literature and poetry, music, health and fitness, and personal stories of success.

Anchored by Victoria’s own Hopelessly Romantic Magazine, the media group can publish a custom, high-quality, print-on-demand magazine for you with your business name as the title. Your magazine will be professionally designed for print, as well as for online and iPad viewing. The online version can have video on the page and links that allow customers to purchase products right from the pages. We use your content, and we provide you with articles and photos related to your business. Not content to be an online visionary, Victoria continues to work as a model and fitness trainer and is recognized as a leading 40-plus model. Her fitness division is anchored by Tac Up Fitness and Tac Up Fitness TV, which offers fitness counseling and training as well as diet advice. She is slated to host an online show with some of California’s top personal trainers and fitness competitors, displaying their various training techniques and advice. Victoria has also begun a lucrative skin care, cosmetics, and fragrance line under her Romantique brand. And now has her own signature fragrance, ‘Unconventional’. When doctors restored Victoria Napolitano’s eyesight, they had no idea what her “vision” would lead to!
