LonGpi crushed stone

La Chambra Earthenware

Longpi Crushed Stone is handcrafted by members of the Tangkhul Naga Tribe who live in the remote Ukhrul district in Northeastern India

The origins of La Chambra earthenware can be traced back at least 700 years to vases and pitchers found in pre-Colombian archaeological sites. Women artisans still mold each unique piece into shape by hand in the traditional manner utilizing local clays from the Magdalena River in the Colombian Andes

The creation of these objects does not make use of a wheel. The raw materials are a blend of serpentinite a black stone - and weathered rocks. The rocks are hammered into a powder and mixed with water to form pliable dough, which is molded by hand into artistic creations. The trays are incised by skilled artisans using bamboo blades and surface polished with smooth stones to give a unique finish. They are then fired in a kiln for 5-9 hours at 900 degrees centigrade. As a final accent, natural grasses are handwoven into each vessel.

The body of each piece is made from a mixture of sandy and fine clays. As a glaze, a thin layer of engobe clay is then applied over the entire surface and the pieces are air dried in the sun. After drying, each piece is burnished with semi-precious stones to provide a unique surface. The items are then placed inside urns and fired in large kilns. Dried grasses and other organic matter are inserted into the urns immediately after firing. These materials burn rapidly and chemically reduce the iron component in the glaze in turn creating a distinctive black finish.
