Homotopia 2012

Traditional Family Values Welcome to our ninth festival! Homotopia rampages across Liverpool this autumn presenting visual arts, performance, film and debate fronted by a dynamic campaign by Livepool born artist TradeMark. The festival theme this year is ‘Traditional Family Values’ and encompasses over 35 events including new commissions and world premieres that celebrate, interrogate and explore ‘the family’ in all its queer diversity. Many of our exhibitions such as Duggie Fields, Enrico David and Mark Morrisroe have already opened as trailblazers in partnership with the UK Biennial. Continuing partnerships with cultural organisations across the city Homotopia is developing the queer aesthetic into venues including the Walker Art Gallery, Unity Theatre, Open Eye, NML & FACT. Highlights include; The premiere of ‘Epstein’ starring Andrew Lancel; a multi media play about the man that made the Beatles in the 50th anniversary year. In partnership with Walker Art Gallery, the first solo show outside London of work by 2009 Turner Prize nominee Enrico David. Drag fabulist Dickie Beau presents an exploration of the pain of stardom using rare audio of Marilyn Monroe. The anarchy of Gale Force’s ‘Council House Movie Star’ featuring the rebuilding of a council house inside Camp and Furnace. UK premieres of 2 new films by New York director Matt Wolf. New photographs ‘Uganda Pride’ by Rachel Adams. A special acoustic performance by Patrick Wolf at the Gallery where we will be exhibiting new work by the legendary & iconic artist Andrew Logan. 2012 has been a momentous year with a major award from the Heritage Lottery Fund to create an exhibition & archive around the life of Liverpool born transgender pioneer April Ashley, which will open in 2013 which is also our 10th anniversary. In May, Homotopia developed a major hate crime conference with 15 registered social landlords. It is fair to say we have developed immeasurably in our first year as an Arts Council England national portfolio organisation. The investment from ACE has already brought many opportunities for greater collaboration and truly realised our ambition. Internationally, the hugely successful Tom of Finland Retrospective toured from Turku, Finland where it attracted 90,000 visitors in 2011 onto the Kulturhuset in Stockholm where it made a huge impact with over 31,000 visitors. Thank you to Arts Council England & Liverpool City Council for their significant financial support. Thanks to our media partners at Gay Times, DIVA, Seen Magazine & Out North West. Politicians and religious leaders continue to attack gay and trans peoples’ rights at home and abroad making festivals like Homotopia ever more pertinent. I’m delighted to present this years programme as a proud demonstration of the rich wealth of talent that exists within the arts, and of course our queer family. Enjoy and thank you for your continued support Gary Everett Artistic Director, Homotopia

WELCOME TO MY WORLD Duggie Fields

Duggie Fields’ work is a stunning combination of popular and classical imagery reworked by the artist into his own signature style. For this exhibition selected iconic images are presented in a new way, with his high colour, post-Pop figures, turned into large wall mounted perspex sculptures.

The Gallery, Stanhope Street, L1 15 September to 15 October 10am – 2pm Sats, 10am – 4.30pm Mon – Fri

Duggie Fields trained at the Chelsea School of Art in the 1960’s. He has held solo exhibitions in London, Tokyo and New York. We are delighted to present, for the first time in the North West, an anthology of his dynamic and dazzling paintings and imagery.

Mark Morrisroe: Liverpool Biennial

Open Eye Gallery, Mann Island, L3 1BP 15 September - 25 November Tues - Sun 10.30am to 5pm Mark Morrisroe, an instrumental figure in the 1970’s Boston punk scene, was 30 years old when he died of an AIDS-related illness in 1989. The work displayed here, made during his final years, uses photographs and X-ray images alongside other ephemera. Many of these works were produced in a makeshift darkroom in his hospital bathroom. His photographic work revolved around the friends and lovers of his everyday milieu, and the exploration of his own image and identity. A Liverpool Biennial exhibition, presented by Open Eye Gallery in partnership with Homotopia. Mark Morrisroe, Untitled [Self-Portrait], ca. 1980 Š The Estate of Mark Morrisroe (Ringier Collection) at Fotomuseum Winterthur

Enrico David Walker Art Gallery, William Brown Street, L3 15 September to 9 December Free The Arts Council Collection will be presenting Enrico David’s major installation ‘Madreperlage’ (2003) and more recent works on paper as part of the Liverpool Biennial. Enrico David was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2009, but this will be the first solo presentation of his work in England outside London. David works in painting, sculpture and collage, often drawing on craft techniques. ‘Madreperlage’ (2003) characteristically includes semi-grotesque theatrical figures as well as elements that veer towards the vocabulary of design. The exhibition is part of ‘The Arts Council Collection Partnerships supported by Christie’s’, a new collaboration between the Arts Council Collection and four regional museums to develop a dynamic programme of displays and exhibitions based on loans from the Collection.

WELCOME TO MY WORLD Andrew Logan The Gallery, Stanhope Street, L1 20 October - 21 November 10am – 2pm Sats, 10am – 4.30pm Mon – Fri A Homotopia Commission Presented by Homotopia as part of the Independents Liverpool Biennial Andrew Logan has exhibited his jewellery and sculptures all over the world from India to Beverley Hills, St Petersburg to Mexico, creating commissions for The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore and The Flowers East Gallery, London. Andrew famously created the Alternative Miss World events which have been an exciting and creative part of London’s cultural calendar since the early 1970’s. These spectacular events played host to a diverse and wide ranging cast of renowned artists, designers and actors such as David Hockney, Derek Jarman and Brian Eno and featured in the recent film ‘The British Guide to Showing Off’. Now Homotopia will premiere a retrospective show of Andrew’s sculptures, portraits and jewellery which will include work from his own sculpture museum in Berriew, in the Welsh Marches, as well as new commissions created for the exhibition.

Following a sell out run at this year’s Edinburgh Festival, A Beautiful Hell sees 9 young men present a vivid landscape of dreams and desires that explores the notion of exclusion and what it’s like to be an outsider. For his most recent work, Clarke throws together 6 women, 1 man and a room full of envy. Super 8 22 November 7pm FACT, Wood Street, L1 Tickets picturehouses.co.uk £5/£4 In partnership with Open Eye gallery and by special arrangement with the estate of Mark Morrisroe

Between 1981 and 1984, Mark Morrisroe made three films on Super-8 sound—underground home movies filled with thrift-store costumes, cheapo gore, trashy dialogue, and gratuitous nudity, starring himself and his friends as performers. The Laziest Girl in Town features the transvestite antics of Morrisroe, Stephen Tashjian (Tabboo!), and Jack Pierson, culminating in an obscene sequence reminiscent of John Waters’ Pink Flamingos. The trio continued two years later with Hello from Bertha, loosely based on a one-act drama by Tennessee Williams about a prostitute dying in a fleabag bordello, played out in a Boston bedroom with spotty Southern accents and loose wigs. Morrisroe’s longest film, NymphO-Maniac, tells the story of a portly phone sex operator and her insatiable girlfriends, one of whom comes to a grisly end at the hands of two sadistic young toughs.

Enrico David Explored 23 November, 1pm Walker Art Gallery Exhibitions Officer Linda Pittwood will give an insight into the installation ‘Madreperlage’, Enrico David’s career and the production of this exhibition.

Call Me Kuchu Directed by Katherine Fairfax Wright, Malika Zouhali-Worrall 23rd November, 6.30pm Picturehouses @ FACT, £7/£5 Winner Best Documentary Teddy Award Berlinale 2012; Winner Cinema Fairbindet Prize; Honourable Mention Jury Award Sheffield Documentary Festival 2012 ntion Jury Award Sheffield Documentary Festival 2012

In a country where ninetyfive percent of the population condone the criminalisation of homosexuality, a group of queer activists are fighting to prevent this legislative proposal from going ahead. This film describes the life of David Kato, Uganda’s first openly gay activist, and his comradesin-arms. His is a life constantly pervaded by fear of attack, but also characterised by moments of happiness and celebration. Events take a tragic turn when David Kato is found dead in his bed having been bludgeoned to death. In its quietly observational way, this film portrays an exceptionally homophobic and Christian-fanatical environment, the extremity of which helps to strengthen Uganda’s LGBT community.

Homotopia is an an organisation that produces year round programmes including inter-generational projects, award winning social justice initiatives and a burgeoning international programme. The last year has been one the most ambitious & rewarding years in our 9 year history. In May we produced a high profile city wide campaign to mark Idaho. We worked with Merseyside Probation Trust and over 50 Merseyside companies to create IDAHO 50. In the same month we produced a major hate crime conference with 15 Registered Social Landlords creating a new and free resource for Challenging Hate Crime. The resource will be available online soon with many of our award winning initiatives. Over the last year Homotopia has fast established itself as an international brand making a huge impact in gay culture both at home and abroad. In June we toured the hugely successful ‘Tom Of Finland Retrospective’ to the Kulturhuset in Stockholm where it attracted 31,000 visitors in 12 weeks. Since its launch in January 2011 in Turku the exhibition has now attracted over 120,000 visitors making it one of the biggest ever projects in our 9 year history. In July we were awarded a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to develop a pioneering archive & exhibition project on Liverpool born transgender icon April Ashley which opens at the Museum of Liverpool in October 2013. 2013 will be Homotopia’s 10th anniversary and plans are already well underway to mark the year with some very special projects and events.

“If you’re after some intelligent, funny, touching, visionary, thought-provoking stuff to do in November, Homotopia is the place to be.’ DIVA Magazine

Touko Laaksonen Archive 2012-2014

In 2012 Homotopia was instrumental in securing funding from the Turku 2011 Foundation to begin work on researching the personal archive of Touko Laaksonen (Tom Of Finland) as part of a major partnership with The Tom Of Finland Foundation Los Angeles, The Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art & Åbo Akademi University Library Turku who want to gather permanent collections of works & private ephemera by Tom of Finland material related to the artist in Turku. The first phase is now complete and will develop into a large scale archive and heritage programme documenting Tom’s early life in Finland including the Winter War and his early success as an artist. The collaboration with Turku 2011 has been a

truly inspiring and fantastic experience for Homotopia. The Tom Of Finland Retrospective project will continue and through this funding Homotopia Liverpool is now reaching significant international audiences across Scandanavia.
