E Editor’s Message It was an odd summer. The warm weather eluded us until late July; gardens were a little slower to blossom and the beaches were less crowded than usual. Yet, there was as much enthusiasm as ever for outdoor living, with people out and about keeping busy and enjoying life. That is the thing about Victorians – we are nothing if not adaptable! We take it one day at a time, adapting to changing weather patterns, and loving the Southern Vancouver Island lifestyle. Heading into fall, the pages of Homes & Living echo that sense of adaptability and joie de vivre. Homes & Living is honoured to have Trevor Linden as this issue’s celebrity profile. As hockey player and community hero turned property developer, Trevor has now brought his dynamism and business savvy to Vancouver Island. Inside on page 108, this is a story worth a read, as Trevor Linden signifies adaptation and a true love of life. Tony’s Take on Retirement… Or Not! By Tony Parsons

Like so many of us, I began thinking about retirement long before it was on my horizon. I had a vision of long vacations with my wife Tammy, golf every day with fellow retirees; a life with no deadlines, time to read, or write, or just to loaf. I even thought I was looking forward to mowing a lawn, weeding flowerbeds, and growing fat, delicious, deep-red tomatoes that people would rave about. As they say, it seemed like a good idea at the time, but the closer I got to what I imagined to be my biggest reward for years of labour in the broadcast industry, the vision lost focus and simply faded away.

Who could golf every day? I`m not a fan of travel anymore. I know it`s necessary, but long waits and standing shoeless at a security checkpoint is not my idea of the ideal start to a journey across the border or over to Europe. I may look patient as I stand there but, deep down, I`m longing to turn tail, charge down the concourse and go home as quickly as I can. Who wants to mow the lawn anymore? Professional landscapers do that and they`re pretty good at telling the difference between a flower and a pesky weed. As for those tomatoes, I can buy all I can eat. Especially those “heritage” varieties that I love so much; the ones you find on roadside stands up and down this lovely island. Furthermore, loafing is not my style. When all else is done, I hook up the vacuum cleaner and have a go with that. I make my living reading, in a way, and I couldn`t fill a whole lot of hours in front of my computer screen. I`ve written my autobiography and this column only appears in Homes & Living magazine four times a year.

What you`ve just read is the answer to the question I hear so often these days... when are you going to retire? Never say never! However, when you`re presented with the opportunity to carry on doing what you`ve always done, and collect a pay cheque to boot, try and convince me you`ll down tools and walk away - for good. You won`t be able to.
Don`t get me wrong. I know people who have successfully retired. They live on this island in deep contentment, and harbour not a single regret. They find ways to fill their time. A lot of them make contributions to the community in volunteer roles. They don`t mind cutting grass, pulling weeds, or coaxing tomatoes to an abundant harvest. They love what they do, or what they don`t have to do now that they`ve been cut loose from the daily grind.

I cut my work week down to a couple of days, but the rhythm of my routine disappeared and having a five day weekend, while it might have seemed idyllic to others, was just not for me. There was a time that this island was a retirement destination. Years ago, if ever I mentioned my affection for the place, people would almost sneer, “ya know, they call that place God`s waiting room.” If that’s the case, it`s a pretty comfortable place to wait. The chairs are downright comfortable, the receptionist is polite and welcoming, and the magazine selection is up to date.

For me to spend my weekends and as many other days as possible soaking up all the atmosphere and quietude of an island day; enjoying my family and the life we`ve chosen. Oh, by the way, I have avoided using the word “old” on purpose. It just doesn`t figure in my thinking and it shouldn`t in yours. Your learned skills, your accumulated knowledge, your love of life don`t just disappear when you reach a certain plateau in life. They`re called birthdays and they merely mark the passage of time. The only thing you should do about them is celebrate, preferably on this Island.

Just one other thing before I go... My first column was something of a photo album. And Jack, the dog who deems to share his home with us, is most disturbed. In that gallery was another dog, Charlie, who started the whole thing about sharing my news studio over the years. Well, Charlie went to a better place and Jack took over his duties, and then some witness the accompanying photo. It`s of me getting my Honorary Doctorate of Technology from the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Or should I say Jack and me. Oh, that`s me on the right.

For Claudia it was important to bring more natural light into the greatroom that includes an open concept, kitchen, dining and living room. That meant starting with the small windows. All the south-facing windows on the back of the house were enlarged and new ones were added to maximize the amount of available natural light. Arched tops add architectural detail to the windows and the flavor of traditional Mexican and European building styles that the couple is accustomed to.

Claudia and her husband are originally from Mexico, so when I met them on a gray winter day in suburban Toronto, Claudia was warm and welcoming and gushed as she described to me the beauty of her home country. Even more than the gloomy cold and damp Canadian weather outside, for Claudia and her husband, transferred here from a southern region of the Mediterranean, it was the cold and bland interiors of Canadian homes that bothered them most‌too much gray, beige and white, just like the weather outside. So began our quest to develop a warm palette of deep, rich colours for the main floor and bring more light and life into their new Canadian home.

To infuse these rooms with a rich palette, a vibrant range of hues were chosen for upholstery and drapery fabrics. The sofa, with its timeless traditional style is modernized by adding one long bench seat. This quality handcrafted piece upholstered in rich chocolate brown velvet is the perfect places to lounge for casual family nights or seat guests for more formal gatherings. Two sets of traditional armchairs upholstered in coppery orange silk, add additional seating and a traditional European feel. Contemporary Concrete Concrete countertops have been the rave in Europe for years and its gaining ground in North America. Concrete countertops look stunning; it’s not the concrete on your driveway. Decorative concrete encompasses a variety of techniques that can transform the look of standard poured concrete. Some of these techniques include staining, polishing, stamping, and epoxy coating (concrete paint) that can be used to give a concrete surface a faux finish. Granite has been the favoured choice for many homeowners. It is an extremely hard stone and its biggest draw is its natural and unique look. It also fits into any home dĂŠcor and has long enjoyed a real strong aesthetic appeal. Since it is a natural product, no granite slab is alike nor is its individual porosity. Timeless Quartz Quartz is considered one of nature’s strongest minerals, second only to diamonds. Quartz is made up of a composite of ground granite and/or stone bonded together to create a solid surface. One of its signature products is CaesarStone, which consists of 95 per cent quartz and a blend of polymer resins and colouring. CaesarStone harnesses the strong properties of quartz, without all the various colours in it. Its look is smooth, fresh and modern. Interior designers tout CaesarStone’s sleek, clean lines and selection of solid colours.
Butcher Block Professional chefs often choose a thick wooden butcher block for their own kitchen countertops. The species of choice are typically maple and white oak. That’s because these woods are strong and dense and hold up to the daily wear and tear of family living. Depending on your décor, wood or butcher block can look industrial or beautifully warm. The upside: Wood is easily cleaned with only soap and water and can be sanded and resealed as needed. Consider this: Over time, wood countertops can be damaged by water and stains. To cover scratches that inevitably will occur, it requires “food safe” oil sealants.

In the end, experts tell us that any new countertop should be tested for absorbency. Because quarried stone is cut into individual slabs and sealed separately, the need for additional sealant can only be determined once the countertop is installed. Changing the décor theme of your home can be expensive, labour intensive and at times, a little overwhelming. The easiest way to make a dramatic change to a space, for very little money, is to add or replace home accents and accessories. For fall 2011, look for items that are in keeping with the trending industrial theme. Add interior décor items that are metallic or bronze in colour; perhaps distressed or antiqued for an authentic look that adds an element of aesthetic intrigue. If there is anywhere on Vancouver Island that could be coined a ‘perfect piece of paradise’, it might well be a home built by Coastal Construction called Wild Coast Retreat. Perched high above the majestic Pacific Ocean, this custom home project was a careful collaboration between visionary homeowners, world class builders and a risk taking architect that wasn’t afraid to colour outside the blueprint lines. The result of their collective concepts is Wild Coast Retreat, a 3,800 square foot masterwork, comprised of three bedroom and three and one half bathrooms - built in a decidedly contemporary West Coast style – but with many unexpected and unique attributes.
The homeowners had been looking for the perfect parcel of land on which to build their custom dream home. On first visit to this rocky site, the couple was immediately taken by the awe inspiring southern exposure and the rare treat of both protected cove and wide open ocean viewpoints. The following day, the couple were elated and awestruck to witness a grey whale quietly enter the cove to feed. On another visit, an eagle circled overhead, leaving behind a single wing feather that the homeowners kept. There was no denying the magic of the location and a dream became a reality.
Jim Alders, architect with CEI Architecture, designed the home and is credited with creating the seamless bond between structure and surroundings – a design element that was important to the homeowners. In the early stages, the homeowners recall Alders saying that he envisioned a ‘ship making its way out to sea’. The owners are delighted with the tactile interpretation, noting that “the sharp angles of the home with the metal roof, and metal and glass combined with wood and stone in the siding are true reflections of that vision.” Sitting on solid rock, Wild Coast Retreat uses native ‘ocean pearl’

The property has two distinct wings – east and west – adding visual interest to the exterior, privacy and million dollar views for the homeowners, and offering guests a unique entry over a bridged walkway into a home that is surrounded by a scaled down rendition of a modern day moat. The water feature, which flows from the front of the house to the back, features an exterior waterfall that flows under a window encased bridged catwalk that joins the two wings, is a strong element of the exterior design of the home. It offers a clue as to what distinctive design features lie beyond the front door.

Entering through a massive custom crafted pivot wood front door with impressive timber trellis work overhead, a custom painting of a magnificent eagle (that is missing a wing feather) greets you in the foyer, on a feature wall. This ingenious entry space also includes a sliding panel that creates an architectural coat closet, and a suspended floating wall with more feature art work that conceals a beautiful staircase with cantilever open riser stairs done in solid wood. At once, the foyer envelopes you with a warm, cozy feel, and this ambiance is effortlessly echoed throughout the entire residence, which is unified through the use of Douglas fir columns, as well as flooring that alternates between reclaimed merbau wood and charcoal granite slate tile.

The entryway leads into the great room, the main living space in the home that features a wall of windows that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. The room includes a 180 degree wood burning fireplace and is designed to be furnished and decorated in a very minimalist style – the key was to let the view speak for itself and be the focal point of the room. For example, in one corner of the great room, the windows meet at a strong angle, pointing out to sea – gracefully reaching out to touch the ocean. Like every other room in this home, the windows are a deliberate design feature. The large number of windows for the home, some weighing 1,500 pounds each, had to be crane lifted into place.

The living room leads naturally into the open concept kitchen and dining room. The space is a gastronomic delight, providing ample space for preparing large meals on the massive island with smooth top range and sleek waterfall countertops; enjoying food and drink with guests at a table that provides a splendid view. The stunning fir cabinetry in the kitchen adds a rich yet natural element to the home; which even includes matching cabinet covers to hide the refrigerator and dishwasher. The CeasarStone countertops in the kitchen (as well as the bathrooms) were custom made and installed by the experts at Stone Trends, a company that Coastal Construction has worked with on several projects. The kitchen also features a few very unique bells and whistles, such as a butler wall with a built-in wine fridge and prep station, and a sliding door that hides the mess or reveals a dry good storage area. The far wall includes a built-in wall oven, microwave and flat screen TV – which was a specific requirement by the homeowners for watching hockey games!

Coastal Construction is known for building aesthetically exceptional homes for very discerning clients. Perhaps it is their uncanny ability to see the project through the eyes of the homeowner that has furthered their industry success; achievements that comprise fifteen Care Gold awards including Project of the Year in 2006 and 2009. Wild Coast Retreat has garnered numerous awards for Coastal Construction in 2010 – most notably Gold Care winner for Best Kitchen. The homeowners are not surprized. “The kitchen is the most used space in the house, and one of our favourite spaces. It has a functional elegance that is conducive to conversation among family and friends.” To add functionality to beauty, behind the kitchen wall, there is also an irregular shaped powder room with a custom angled counter with integrated sink, and a large mudroom with laundry, additional storage and access to the outdoors.

The homeowners are thrilled with the tactile interpretation of the architect’s vision: a ship making its way out to sea… The lower level of the home includes two good-sized guest bedrooms, one with an ensuite, a second common bathroom, an exercise room with infrared sauna; media room with a wall mounted console and TV, as well as proper theatre lighting and tiered movie house seating. This level doesn’t scrimp on features either, with custom built-in beds, large windows and French doors that flood the bedrooms with light, a lovely featured art niche and a door leading to the outdoor waterfall.

The showstopper of this home is the west wing, which houses the master retreat on the main level and the storm watching den on the upper level. The master bedroom is accessed by an internal glass bridge from the main foyer and is perfectly removed from the rest of the home, offering privacy and a unique tranquility, without ever feeling disjointed. Stepping down in the sunken bedroom area, the expanse of the room is immediately apparent – a room designed to accommodate a bed that faces the ocean. There is little else in this room to distract; the forests and water are the main attraction. The bedroom is separated from the master bathroom by a huge walk-in closet. The spa-like bath features the same fir cabinetry used throughout the house, a classic floating double vanity, heated towel rack, and a vaulted ceiling with 72” skylight above the deep soaker tub. The master retreat also features a large outdoor deck with numerous natural viewpoints, as well as a hot tub. From the main floor, head up the brilliant floating staircase and across a second level suspended cable-style bridge, and you enter the jewel of Wild Coast Retreat, the storm watching den. This eagle nest style snug is 460 square feet of comfortable living with unimaginable views of the Pacific Ocean. Once again, in keeping with the rest of the home, all the custom cabinetry was done in Douglas fir. Walking into this room, although it has beautiful furniture and a cozy fireplace, it is hard to notice anything but the view. Vancouver Island is famous for storm watching season and this is the best vantage point in the home - perhaps even on the island - to marvel at raging waters and scenery that changes by the minute.
There were so many little touches in this home that all came together successfully to arrive at a flawless design. Lighting throughout the home was meant to resemble beach glass and ocean ambiance, so that it blends nicely into the home and becomes a feature instead of serving just a utilitarian purpose. Illuminations and McLaren Lighting both contributed to the custom lighting on this project. A one-of-akind totem pole sits on a singular wall, brimming with local personality and working well to unify the main living spaces. There are no window treatments in the home to clutter either the interior design or the exterior views – a wise choice. According to Brad Johnson, owner of Coastal Construction, Wild Coast Retreat, a project that took two years from start to finish, was as rewarding as it was challenging. The team of builders, architects, designers and their tradesman welcomed each of the many times their expert skills were put to the test, building a home with such a unique aesthetic, inside and out.

The interior designer for the home was Coastal Construction’s Adriana Sharoun, who collaborated with the team at Swiftsure Woodworking on cabinetry details and construction. Having worked with Coastal on many custom home builds, Swiftsure was pleased to provide all the custom cabinetry for this residence. “Wild Coast Retreat uses exposed Douglas fir timbers for many of the structural elements and the theme is carried throughout the cabinetry. Built from edge-grain fir panels, the cabinetry and millwork were designed to harmonize with the native finishes and details of the structure.”

The exterior landscaping, which is an engineering marvel in itself, makes this point quite clearly. Project manager Troy Freeborn explains how the house was built backwards, from the ocean up. “The landscaping includes extensive terracing, patios, rock walls, walkways and stairs carved from stone; all which eventually meander down to an ocean side patio that sits just a few feet above the high tide mark. The work crew had to excavate and develop the lower areas first. Otherwise, with this steep incline, if we had started to build the house first, we would have cut off all access to the areas below.” The expansive grounds also include a separate garage with studio, a BBQ patio, an outdoor fireplace and covered patio area, a hot tub plus several viewing decks attached to the home.

When the project was completed, the crew at Coastal Construction presented the homeowners with a hard covered, coffee table style book – a keepsake that recounted the building of their dream home. The photographs in their book told a story of a couple’s vision, planned out carefully by a very skilled and thoughtful building team. Wild Coast Retreat came to life amongst the pages, and nestled in the book was an apropos quote by famous architect and father of organic architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright. “Study nature, love nature, stay close to nature. Cary Castle, the eccentric building that served as British Columbia’s first Government House, burned to the ground in 1899. The first wing had been built as a turreted stone castle by a man who soon afterwards became insane. Purchased in 1864 by the Colony of Vancouver Island, it had served three royal governors and six lieutenant governors, being enlarged and altered several times. Now, what was to replace it?

The loss was made easier for the cash-strapped government by $12,000 in insurance. In October 1900 a notice to all architects in the province was issued, with five prizes ranging from $50 to $250. The requirements were straightforward. The exterior was to be “plain but dignified … and in keeping with the natural beauty of the site.” The focus of the interior was to be the ballroom and, in general, the design was to provide “the greatest convenience and security against fire.” The maximum cost was set at $50,000.

The winning selection met with opposition from other architects and eventually the government turned to Francis Mawson Rattenbury, the architect of the recently completed Parliament Buildings, to prepare a new set of drawings. Though he asked Samuel Maclure to assist him, Maclure became ill and Rattenbury ended up doing most of the work himself.

Described as “baronial English,” the exterior design included picturesque projections, gables and a battlemented turret above the main entrance. Rattenbury also added a rounded corner tower with a crenellated top—albeit in wood—as a reminder of Cary Castle’s original stone tower. Stone was used for the foundations and around the front door and red brick was used in the massive chimneys, but most of the exterior was clad with sawn cedar shingles.

Ground was broken in November 1901, but it was almost eighteen months before the interior was ready for its ornate woodwork and plaster adornment. Four rail carloads of furniture, all specially ordered in England, were in place by August, 1903. The drawing room, however, was furnished with antique English furniture that had been sent out for the original Cary Castle and which had been saved from the fire. Even before the finishing work was complete, Lieutenant Governor Sir Henri Gustave Joly de Lotbinière moved in. Embellishments were added later, including a feature stained glass window also crafted by Bloomfield. It used heraldic symbolism to show Canada’s links to Britain and the Crown and incorporated British Columbia’s own coat of arms, along with the names of all governors and lieutenant governors up to that time. Overall, the state apartments were deemed to be “very handsome and of imposing proportions.”

By the time Government House was finished, the total cost had escalated to over $120,000, more than double the original estimate. A political scandal ensued and Rattenbury faced one of the biggest challenges of his stormy career. He was charged with authorizing extra work purely on his own whim. But most disturbing was the revelation that some of the building materials, such as expensive marble, had been diverted to an addition on his own Beach Drive home.

Throughout his professional lifetime, Rattenbury had made enemies among many other prominent Victoria architects who resented his ability to get contracts. Ironically, two of the most vocal opponents were appointed to a commission to review the allegations against him. In the end, the charges were not proven. Rattenbury managed to avoid legal charges and the government continued to use his services. In 1908 it asked him to design a stone porte cochere to grace Government House’s front entrance. Within a few years, extensive landscaping was introduced around the new vice-regal mansion. In 1911 the gardens were redesigned to take advantage of the bedrock that underlies the site. Pathways, ponds and flowerbeds were arranged to appear as natural as possible, while keeping more formal lawns for official functions. Imposing new gates and a stone and wrought iron fence along Rockland Avenue were completed by 1912 at a total cost of $36,000. This included bronze castings from Tiffany Studios of New York.

Sadly, the second Government House met the fate of the first one. On April 15, 1957 it burned to the ground in a pre-dawn fire that sent Lieutenant Governor and Mrs. Frank Ross outside in their pyjamas. Nothing was saved, not even their pet budgie. Except for the towering chimneys, only the stone porte cochere survived and became a feature of the present Government House, the third—and hopefully the final—on the site.

Pender Island lies in a rain shadow of Vancouver Island and the Olympic Mountain range and enjoys a sub-Mediterranean climate with significantly less precipitation and more sunshine. This coupled with the fact that Pender Island offers more public beach access than any other Gulf Island, and it is no wonder we couldn’t wait to return. On this trip to Pender Island, we had the pleasure of enjoying the company of Wayne & Holly Bowles, owners of Complete Window Services in Parksville, renowned for quality windows and custom renovations. Homes & Living magazine was privileged to have featured the Bowles residence; a masterful renovation that included a massive timber framed great room, in H&L’s spring 2008 Central Island edition.

H&L’s head office is fortunate to be located on the Selkirk Waterway in Victoria with the convenience of a dock at our doorstep, not to mention the sensational patio and fine dining of

Glo Restaurant, as our neighbours (I think I’ve put on 10 pounds since we moved our offices here)! Wayne and Holly met us at Glo where we enjoyed a cold beverage and some appetizers, and then we set course for Poets Cove. Arriving at Pender Island by sea is breathtaking, especially at dusk as the lights from Poets Cove shine a welcoming glow out into its harbour. You can hear the laughter and chatter of people enjoying the patio as they look out over the cove… what an arrival. Poets Cove Resort & Spa consists of the main lodge, cottages and villas. The Villas and cottages offer a true ‘home away from home’ experience with amenities such as a full kitchen, BBQ on an ocean view deck, and ensuite laundry, to name but a few. A private villa or cottage is the perfect choice for a romantic getaway or a family vacation. We stayed in the main lodge, which sits right on the waterfront with breathtaking water views. Once we check in, we relaxed on our private balcony with a glass of ice cold champagne overlooking the harbour, million dollar yachts and a spectacular sunset.

After a restful sleep, we enjoyed coffee, fresh fruit and pasty on our balcony while Wayne and Holly experienced the renowned Susurrus Spa, and were treated to a relaxing 1-hour massage. Just outside the spa, there is a sandstone steam cave tucked beneath a waterfall, and a hot tub that sits on a bluff at the base of the waterfalls, overlooking the habour.

Masonry has been around almost as long as humans have
Since the dawn of industrialization, convenience and affordability have monopolized the leading edge of technological advances. Why take a trip to a tropical rain forest when you can bask in the luxury and comfort of a rain showerhead? Similarly, why build a house out of real stone when concrete can be coloured, polished and shaped to look like stone for a fraction of the price? For one thing, your home will never resemble a Persian palace or a Greek temple if you face it with concrete. And, over time, concrete erodes and requires maintenance when real stone masonry has lasted and will last for generations. It’s weather proof, rot proof, fire proof, air proof—not only is it beautiful art, it’s strong and it’s done.

“Natural stone won’t fade or produce efflorescence over time,” says K2 Stone Quarries Vice President of Sales, Michael Penner. “It requires less maintenance and looks better.” Since November 2003, K2 Stone has specialized in thin stone veneers, full bed building stone, cap stones, flag stone, hearths, mantles, landscape stone and a variety of custom products. K2 operates quarries in British Columbia and Montana, with two of its seven franchise stores located here on the island in Victoria and Nanaimo. Penner says the stone industry is seeing a renewed interest in natural stone work, as well as the emergence of modern flare to the traditional craft of stone masonry.

Masonry, one of the oldest trades of civilization, cropped up during the Neolithic Revolution (the first agricultural revolution c. 3500 BC), when people discovered how to use fire to create quicklime, plasters and mortars, which were then used to build homes with mud, straw or stone. Stonemasons built the Egyptian pyramids, the Taj Mahal, Chartres Cathedral and the Roman Coliseum, as well as medieval castles and many other immaculate and long-lasting monuments.

Nowadays, anything built from brick, stone, marble, granite, travertine, limestone, concrete block, glass block, stucco, or tile is generally considered masonry. New Castle takes care of all the masonry for both the exterior and interior of a home, and enlists four masonry sub-trades to keep the art of stonemasonry alive. Quarrymen split and extract raw rock from the earth, while sawyers cut rough slabs of stone to required size for carving and shipping. Banker masons then specialize in carving stone into shapes required for a home’s design. Stone specialist, Norman Brown, manages New Castle stone orders and fabrication while also operating a stone fabrication plant out of Courtenay, BC. He travels the globe to find the highest quality of stone requested by clients. Over the last 25 years or so, stonemasonry has likely become a lost art because extracting, cutting and carving stone requires specialized skills, and fixer masonry (the installation of stone) is an intricate art and one of the most challenging subtrades to master. The mental aptitude required to endure a project for two or three years, and turn simple stone into beautiful art takes a highly skilled master mason - precisely why de Palma partnered with Gary Wade to fill the roll.
Stonemasons built the Egyptian pyramids, the Taj Mahal, Chartres Cathedral and the Roman Coliseum Wade, a third generation master mason, works with apprenticing masons, but lays all the stone for New Castle projects to ensure the highest quality installation. Wade’s grandpa was a mason, his dad a mason—naturally Wade wanted to be a mason, too.

De Palma wanted to have the best teacher teaching his guys how to become better masons, and he himself manages New Castle projects and has been involved in construction most of his life. De Palma, Wade and Brown all love and believe in this nearly forgotten art. Eack take great pride and satisfaction in passing on the ancient craft of ‘true masonry’ to a new generation, while taking an active role in constructing today’s castles. “Homeowners should consider natural stone because it withstands the test of time better than manmade products both technically and aesthetically,” says Ivo Zanatta, owner of Matrix Marble & Stone on Vancouver Island.

As I sit and paint Willows Beach, in my imagination the bikinis and frisbees fade away and once again this is home to the First Nations. The shoreline north of Bowker Creek (then called Thaywun) has been occupied for more than 2600 years. Longhouses once lined the shore, fronted by steaming pits for clams and sea urchins, and drying racks for fish. This village was known as Sitchanalth, named for the driftwood logs and trees lodged in the sand.

Poised between the Royal Victoria Yacht Club and the Victoria Golf Club (golf all year round - since 1893!), this long sandy beach is heavenly.

Time marches on. In the 19th century, the Hudson’s Bay needed provisions and John Upland established a dairy farm nearby. His cattle were shipped out from Cattle Point. In the 1890s, wellestablished families left the hustle and grime of the city of Victoria to enjoy the healthful breezes of Oak Bay. The Victoria Electric Railway and Lighting Company extended the streetcar line to Willows Park in 1891. By 1899 a wonderful fairground and race track was opened there, centering on the magnificent Exhibition Building. The District Municipality of Oak Bay was incorporated July 2, 1906 and chose as its motto ‘happiness under the oaks’. All this wonderfulness was not lost on Francis Rattenbury, Victoria’s celebrity architect. In 1898, the year after he finished work on the Parliament Buildings downtown, he built the first portion of his marvellous waterfront home on Oak Bay. It was named Iechinihl (pronounced “eye-a-chineel”), which he said was an Indian word meaning “a place where good things happen”. This 1898 was also the year he married Florrie, whom author Terry Reksten called “a shy, retiring girl, gifted with a patient serenity”. With no money or family backing, Florrie wasn’t up to life among the elite in Rockland, so “Ratz” built her a home in remote Oak Bay. The first part of Iechinihl was pure shingle style with vaguely French blind gables. The later 1913 wing affected the half-timbered treatment of the English Arts and Crafts as practiced by Samuel Maclure. Martin Segger describes it as “the ultimate evocation of his romantic potpourri of old world charm, Arts and Crafts architectural innocence, and English country rusticity.” Inside, solid mahogany floors, thick oak doors with cut glass doorknobs and stained glass windows were in keeping with the ideals of William Morris.
To forestall a proposed fish packing plant, Rattenbury bought the tiny Mary Tod Island in 1906, then known as Jimmy Chicken Island, which stood out in Oak Bay directly in his view. And he was kept busy building splendid homes on York Place and Prospect Place at the back of his property.

In 1904, Rattenbury was taken to court for redirecting materials which he had ordered for Government House to his own use. It was said that the kitchen of his home contained so much marble that it remained as cool as a mausoleum, no matter how warm the day or hot the stove – sheets of marble over an inch thick lined the walls from floor to ceiling, marble covered counter tops, and slabs of marble served as shelves in the pantry. Despite the evidence, he beat the charges.

Eventually, an animosity between Ratz and Florrie grew until they stopped speaking to each other and divided their grand house into separate apartments. Rattenbury stayed in his quarters and consumed the better part of a bottle of whiskey every day while he carried on an affair with his new mistress or brooded over the shambles of his personal life and the future of the Grand Trunk Railroad. The Rattenburys eventually divorced in 1925.

Iechinihl was sold in 1935 to Mr. Ian Simpson and became a boy’s preparatory school, which he named Glenlyon after his former Scottish home. Iechinihl is still central to the Junior School of Glenlyon-Norfolk School, and retains a portion of the lovely gardens which knitted the home and its environs together. The original boathouse is there too, though somewhat obscured by an accretion of classrooms. As you drive by on Beach Drive, you can still see the 1914 coach house which Rattenbury built for his Cadillac named “Black Pearl”.

After 1921, the Municipal council outlawed the grazing of cattle along roadways and required drivers to change to the right hand side of the road. A little further north of Iechinihl, waves washed the sands at Willows Beach. In 1949 the Kiwanis Club of Victoria opened the tearoom on the waterfront, which their volunteers have continued to run each summer ever since. Children line up at the service window there, waiting patiently for freezies and French fries while I sit in the dappled shade of the overarching trees, enjoying a fine afternoon on Oak Bay. It’s hard to believe I’m in Canada.

“There’s nothing like domestic architecture; you get to see the way people live in some marvellous houses.”
It’s that time of year again, when summer sunshine fades into fall and Victorians take their sun-kissed skin and peruse some of the Island’s most spectacular and magical homes. Since 1953, the Associates of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV) have organized Victoria’s premier, self-guided house tour to support the gallery, promote local artists and showcase uniquely designed homes. Featured artists for the 2011 house tour include Robert Amos (who each year paints a watercolour of one of the houses from the tour for event tickets and posters), Nixie Barton and Grant Leier, Adelle Andrew, Blu Smith, Mano Elder, Sam Dickie and Joan Pattee. Also, for the last few years, the Victoria Flower Arrangers Guild has assigned an arranger to each house to design a floral masterpiece that the owner gets to keep. “One year the floral arranger replicated a Dutch painting of flowers on the table,” says the Associates’ chair, Joan Huzar. “It was so clever and appropriate!” With almost 17,000 works of art, AGGV has the largest public collection in B.C. and is a vibrant and active part of Victoria’s artist community. Last year the Associates raised nearly $30,000, and Huzar says they are hoping to raise at least $35,000 this year.

“We’re so lucky to have this facility here,” Huzar says of the art gallery. “The feedback we get is that this is the best house tour around. Volunteers always have fun, and they think it’s a great way to support the gallery.” Homeowner’s feel good about supporting the gallery, too.

“It’s great that people are generous enough to allow us to walk through their homes,” says Jon Tupper, director of AGGV. “We can go into public buildings and shopping malls, but there’s nothing like domestic architecture; you get to see the way people live in some marvellous houses.”

The houses on the tour are picked mostly for architectural reasons—what looks like an astonishing or interesting house… a home people need to see. This year, six newer homes were selected, two of which reside in Cordova Bay and are located on either side of McMorran’s Beach House. Both homes are designed for retirement and beachfront living. The house north of McMorran’s features an elevator and geothermal in-floor heating, while the home south of the beach house boasts a bamboo staircase and upstairs hallway that looks down on the main living area below. Most people know Trevor Linden as #16 – Captain Canuck; perhaps, the most famous of all hockey players to play for the Vancouver Canucks, twice. Many of those same people might be surprized to learn just how many facets there are to Trevor Linden, and how his hockey career has opened doors down so many different avenues of his life – and how many other lives he has touched in the process.

Hockey Hero Trevor Linden retired from hockey on June 11, 2008, exactly twenty years to the day that he was drafted. Linden spent the bulk of his illustrious career with the Vancouver Canucks, but also played on other NHL teams including the Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders and the Washington Capitals. To this day, and especially on the heels of an electrifying 2011 Canucks season that saw our team go all the way to the 7th game of the Stanley Cup finals, Trevor Linden continues to be regarded as a gentlemanly and legendary public figure to BC hockey fans.

Throughout his renowned hockey career, Trevor Linden amassed 867 career points while playing in 1,382 regular season hockey games. Linden is also fortunate to include such professional accomplishments as playing in two NHL All-Star Games; and representing Canada alongside Wayne Gretzky in both the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

From 1998 through 2006, Trevor Linden also served as a collaborative and proactive President of the NHL Players’ Association. When asked, Trevor was quick to identify Hockey Hall of Famer and fellow WHL Medicine Hat Tigers alumnus Lanny McDonald, as his all-time favourite hockey player. Top of mind career highlights include the 1994 Canucks Stanley Cup final and his Canadian Olympic experience in 1998. With a career that spanned twenty years, it must be difficult to pick favourite moments, best games and celebrated events. Linden has been fortunate to be at the centre of so many, and not by chance.

Community Champion Trevor Linden has long been known for his commitment to his community, province and country; a man that has never been unwilling or even remotely hesitant when it comes to giving back. Established in 1997, the Trevor Linden Foundation actively supports youth and children with special needs, working diligently and tirelessly to better the lives of our Canadian youth through educational and sport related initiatives. For the past fourteen years, the Trevor Linden Foundation has joined forces with other charities in some of the cities where Trevor once graced the ice – Vancouver (as well as greater British Columbia), Montreal and New York. It is no secret that Trevor’s humble personality, love for people and genuine caring nature has touched the lives of many – including children. From simple guidance from a famed role model, to reaching out to children with terminal illness, Linden takes a personal interest in everyone he meets. To this point, the Trevor Linden Foundation will be a lasting testament.

Trevor competed in the 2007 Trans Alp bike race, 600 gruelling kilometres across the European Alps. He and teammate John Ramsden finished 48th, with 122 teams competing Trevor takes great pride in lending his name and time to worthwhile charities, especially when young people are involved. Although Trevor and his wife have no children of their own, some of the most noteworthy charities Linden has worked alongside include Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, Canadian Cancer Society BC & Yukon Preventative Health Campaign, Cops for Cancer, BC Children’s Hospital Capital Campaign, BC Cancer Foundation, Ronald McDonald House BC and the Zajac Ranch. It is not unexpected that Trevor Linden has been publicly acknowledged for his selfless commitment to British Columbia and Canada. In 2003, Trevor was awarded the Order of British Columbia, and in 2010 was honoured with the Order of Canada for his contribution to sport and community, one of only 5,800 inductees. Linden was also inducted into the BC Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010.

With adult children getting married and starting the next generation, David and Leeanna took their dream of a home (where their entire clan could congregate) and made it a reality; all in partnership with Ed McDonald’s visionary team at MAC Renovations.

“We’ve got a large family, and all of our family live [in and around Victoria],” notes Leeanna, “so Sunday dinner for us, with just our immediate family, is 12.” The dream of a genuine family home has come true for them, due in large part to the strong relationship they formed with their contractor, and the result is a stunning split-level abode that has transformed from a dated, unlit space into a vibrant, elegant, and well-loved home. Pulling up to the residence (located on a pretty stretch of Central Saanich Road, just outside of Saanichton) one is struck at once with its grandeur, despite its relatively small size; with the yard in the rear of the house, the unique house sits atop a rising drive, and its dark green hue (overtop of acrylic stucco) and unorthodox angular shape make it stand out imposingly against the soft foliage that surrounds it. Soffit-mounted pot lights give it a stylish, almost sensual look under the night sky, and it would be easy to think that such an austere frontage signified a cold and joyless interior, but nothing could be further from the truth.

The home is a joy to discover; neutral tones on the walls and natural light allow the excellent design elements to speak for themselves, not overshadowed by loud and insistent colour schemes. The affability and family spirit of the Bulinckx’s is reflected aptly in both the style and layout, where open spaces, accessibility and honesty are on full display.

Upon entering through a classic craftsman-style front door, a handsome and spacious living room presents itself off the entryway; with brilliant 8’x5’ windows showcasing the vista of ample greenery, Mt. Heading up the stairs (adorned with oak railings and square spindle, wrought iron banisters), the cosiness sets in as the passageways narrow. All the doors in the house are custom oak, and it’s easy to linger in front of them and admire their contrast with the muted colour scheme. Particularly alluring is the set to the master bedroom: delta frost glass panels, inset in each of the doors, glow with the brilliant light inside, as does the transom panel that tops them. Passing through, one sees why: creamy carpeting and soft white walls let the sumptuous room reflect the flood of natural light pouring in through more, even bigger, windows. An eliminated den has made space for a commodious bedroom and an enticing king-size bed, the latter abutting an attractive display wall. Behind is every fashionista’s dream: a walk-through closet, with floor-to-ceiling custom cabinets and dressers (all cabinets in the house by cabinetmaker Peter Hess) in the richly stained maple that’s present throughout. An 8’x3’ mirror greets the visitor at one end of the vast dressing hall; perfect for last minute touches. Luxury continues as a giant ensuite bathroom opens up off of the bedroom, practically a spa on its own. Complete with a glass and chrome frameless shower surround, a huge soaker tub of cultured

Sconce light fixtures, mounted right on to the wall sized mirror, give the room an embracing feel, as well as enough light to dress by or to read in the tub, and the room-specific digital sound system (built into the walls throughout the house) ensures that this steamy heaven is a favourite getaway. The upper level also features another bathroom, with the same cultured marble countertops (by Precision Marble), another immense mirror with stylish lights cut right into it, and a large skylight. The darker walls infuse the space with a serene atmosphere (paint by McDonnell Painting). Two guest bedrooms; again drenched in natural light and with lovely green views, round out the top floor, ensuring lots of space for family visitors. The jewel of the home is on the lower level: the complete kitchen, a gathering place for family and
friends, alongside an agreeably ample dining room. Coming down the stairs, the sight line comes right onto a large window to the garden, continuing the theme of seamless transition between indoors and outdoors. To boot, the food area is complemented by a large covered patio, a favourite of the family, another brainchild of Ed McDonald. The kitchen is a treasure for foodies: an expansive open space; a mighty island topped with a single immense slab of typhoon bordeaux granite; quartz countertops & bar; recycled glass mosaic tile behind the range; heavy duty, tile-like linoleum flooring for durability; and no less than four sinks. The custom cabinets, in the same attractive maple, provide copious storage, both within the island and in the traditional installation. Appliances are tucked away inside the cabinetry, including the double-walled oven, microwave, and fridge; even the range hood is clad in maple. Preparation space is practically limitless, which has translated into the family congregating there and working together.

“What it means is that everybody gravitates towards the kitchen,” notes Leeanna, “and now it’s so huge, that there are no problems. We really enjoy this space so much; the kids love it too. My daughter said the other day, ‘This is so nice to work with you in here… we can all work in here together and not be bumping into each other.’” A flat-screen television has brought the men in the family into the mix as well, especially during hockey season, and the bar along one wall doubles as a children’s play area. French doors onto the large dining room provide a second option for supervised play, as well as the large backyard just outside.

The Bulinckx’s are overjoyed with the symbiosis that they were able to develop with MAC Reno, keeping their goals of a family-friendly home in sight.

“Ed and Jennifer [Pacheco, Interior Designer for MAC Renovations] and the crew helped us to keep that whole feel that the house was a home and a living space, not a show piece,” Leeanna says. MAC Reno’s flexibility and expertise came in handy during the 2008-2009 renovation, as the family decided they wanted a suite added to the house for their grown children (it is now occupied by the family’s youngest daughter and her husband). With the help of Ed McDonald’s foresight, they were able to build the suite (which joins seamlessly to the original structure) as a separate address, with its own utilities, entrance and exit; the entire residence is actually now considered a duplex. And the understanding between homeowner and builder went both ways, as the couple decided to vacate the home as it was being renovated, something McDonald notes can make the contractor’s job easier. “They were doing a full scale type of renovation,” says Leeanna. “We felt much better about leaving. That way, we felt that they could do their job. What’s the point in asking people to do something for you and then making it difficult for them to do it?” The results couldn’t be better: the Bulinckx family have a comfortable space that they love, that reflects the closeness of their family, and that sacrifices nothing in terms of beauty – now that’s a home.

he just kept going, almost as if he didn’t see me,” she blurted. The youth she described was dressed in an old fashioned padded black jacket and baggy pants and he had a queue of the style all Chinese men were required to wear by edict of the Emperor before 1911. Without knowing it, she had just encountered Chan Ah Heung, or at least his ghost. How he came to haunt Fan Tan Alley is an amazing story.

In 1889 Chan was eighteen years old and had been in Victoria for several years. He worked as a bed maker at the American Hotel on Yates Street near Commercial Alley, but lived in a room in Chinatown on Fisgard Street, practically where the Capital Regional District’s headquarters is today. Like most of the other Chinese in town at that time he had come from Guangdong Province in the south of China and probably hoped to amass enough money eventually to return home to his family “in silken robes.”

In that era Chinatown was predominantly a bachelor society. Women comprised barely five per cent of the city’s Chinese population, so Chan and many others in his situation longed for female companionship. Some of the women were the wives of rich merchants, but many were “slave girls,” sometimes referred to euphemistically as “sing song girls.” One such slave girl was You Gum, who just happened to live next door to Chan.

You Gum was a raven haired beauty who had been purchased in San Francisco by Yip Chong for $1200. Chan visited her often and fell head over heals in love. Eventually he asked her to marry him, but she rebuffed his offer, explaining Yip Chong would not release her. Whereupon Chan brought her a vial of poison so she could murder her master and be free to marry. You Gum wanted no part of this plot and unceremoniously told Chan to go away and stay away. That, however, was easier said than done because he lived next door. All night long the spurned young man heard You Gum calling out to other men as they passed her window, until finally he had had enough.

Chan and a friend hatched a diabolical scheme. One dark night they crept up to the window where You Gum sat. The friend reached in and grabbed her hair. Chan pulled out a huge fish slicer and brought it down across the girl’s neck, almost severing her head from her body. And then he started to run as fast as his legs could carry him. It is believed he ran through Fan Tan Alley, pushing everyone he encountered out of the way. Eventually he made his way to American Alley, the narrow thoroughfare behind the American Hotel, and concealed himself in the coal bin of the nearby Burnes House. A few days later he emerged half starved and was turned over to the police and taken to Hillside Jail (on the site of S. J. Willis School). A sensational trial before Justice Sir Henry Pering Pellew Crease resulted in Chan being convicted of murder and sentenced to hang.

Before the date set for his execution, Chan committed suicide in his jail cell. His grave was dug behind the jail, in the same ground used to bury hanged men. According to traditional Chinese belief, the dead had to be provided with all the items they used in their lifetime, such as food, money, clothing and even houses. Real food
was placed on graves, but the other things were represented by paper replicas. But none of this was offered to Chan, with the inevitable result that his ghost is tantamount to an evil spirit, playing havoc with the living. Chan’s angry ghost is doomed to reenact his run to escape his captors. Narrow spaces such as Fan Tan Alley tend to concentrate any ghostly energy that may be around. Thus, pedestrians walking through the alley today sometimes feel, or even see, his presence and get pushed aside as he rushes past. The horrific murder-suicide of 1889 which he perpetrated has come back to haunt many today who may not even know the details of his foul deed. And what of You Gum? She had every reason to return as a troubled spirit, even though it is believed Yip Chong did everything in his power to provide for her in the afterlife. Some people suspect that she is the female ghost that haunts the site of the former American Hotel on lower Yates Street, forever searching for her murderer who was captured on the premises.

Sesame Encrusted Seared Rare Tuna & Papaya Saffron Greens
Join us in celebrating this issue’s feature chef, Darren Cole from Steeples Bar and Grill in Shawnigan Lake, who shares his delectable recipe for Sesame Encrusted Seared Rare Tuna with H&L readers. Bon appetit!
Buckwheat Honey Soya Sesame Glaze with Fresh Mango Pineapple Salsa Tuna 2 x 4 ounce pieces raw tuna (preferably Ahi) Salt and pepper Sesame seeds (white and black) • Season Tuna and coat with sesame seeds • Sear Tuna in oil in a hot frying pan on each side for 4 seconds • Remove from pan and slice or cut into any shape you desire
Dressing & Local Field greens 4 ounces local field greens ¼ fresh papaya flesh 1 teaspoon saffron flowers ¼ cup olive oil 2-4 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar (to taste) • Puree or mash the papaya • Emulsify all ingredients in blender or stir very quickly to incorporate air as to blend molecules so they become one smooth sauce and toss greens with dressing
Honey Soya Sesame Glaze ½ cup buckwheat honey 4 tablespoons soya sauce 1 tablespoon of sesame oil 2 tablespoons of pureed ginger 1 fresh pureed red chile (optional if you like spice) • Puree all ingredients and pour into squirt bottle.
Mango-Pineapple Salsa ¼ cup diced fresh mango ¼ cup diced fresh pineapple 1 finely diced red chile 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil • Mix all ingredients

When I ponder a classical home lived in and decorated by grownups, I envision light pouring in through each window onto cozy sectionals, chests and various other furnishings; crown mouldings and skylights decorate a vaulted, wood panel ceiling, magnificent paintings hang from appropriately painted walls and an assortment of plants accentuate windows; books, art and craft fill shelves and empty spaces for contemplation, while smoky hardwood and Egyptian tile flooring anchor charming brick from roof to floor; pendant lights float above living spaces as if the home is protected by its own fleet of glow bugs—a vintage chandelier hovers above the dining table like a mother ship.

And pillows, pillows strewn everywhere. Or maybe this is what I’d like my ideal home to look like when my income matches my status as a grownup. Regardless, I know how I want art in the home to make me feel: contemplative, inspired, moved and impassioned.

I think art in the home encompasses everything from architecture and furnishings, paintings and sculpture, to the books you read that decorate shelves and the clothes that hang in your closet. Art can sometimes elicit a narrative, whether the art in question comes with a story or I make one up in my head—the resulting introspection is calming, therapeutic even. Art, narrative or not, evokes passion and intrigue, and it gives me a reason to feel good about my life. Feeling good about life motivates me to continue living it, and, if I’m lucky, continue collecting art.

I suppose many contemporary homes accommodate a medley of handmade and synthetic art, and the more refined folk out there in the world might argue that art isn’t art unless it’s handmade. So much of what we surround ourselves with is made by machines, but when somebody actually creates something with their hands; it becomes more significant and adds a welcoming contrast to the clean, smooth modernist surfaces you see in many homes.

It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For just a moment, take a trip back to your childhood: As a little girl, perhaps you were fascinated by mom’s collection of perfume bottles and makeup, not only for the way these made mom look and smell but also for how delicately they sat atop her vanity. Sporting good collections and bull horns thrilled little boys to no end. Craft is also something you see increasing in peoples’ homes, whether it is a piece of fabric or pottery; a macaroni pencil holder made by a child or an exquisite piece of blown glass created by a master glassblower. Craft is art, and it’s an affordable way of collecting art. For those of us who do garner adult incomes, however, the possibilities of art in the home are truly endless. Art can also be contextual—writing on the wall or poetry etched into the glass of a window. “The female is durable / she lives seven and one half years longer,” whispers Charles Bukowski through light spilling in from the corridor, “than the male, and she drinks very little beer / because she knows its bad for the figure.” Interesting. I’ve recently reduced my intake of beer for similar reasons. Although, to feel better about Bukowski’s musings, perhaps etched into a nearby window is a reminder from Ellen DeGeneres to “go home and love yourself and love each other.”
Art can also be contextual—writing on the wall or poetry etched into the glass of windows Art in the garden tends to be an overlooked practice, but sculptures and landscaping always add to the ambiance of a home’s setting. New media art that requires electricity can live in the garden or under the roof, and for the technologically savvy homeowners out there, it can be wired into the home’s automation system. So, too, can audio walks with narratives, which are now being commissioned for domestic properties. Whether the art in your home is an intricately designed faucet or an Ansel Adams landscape pulling the homes’ hardware together, it needs room to breathe. Give your art some space for contemplation. You need only a modest amount of traditional art to enrich a home if everything else is carefully picked and placed. Now is the time to hone that artful eye.

And, if all you currently own is a snowboard (the Louis Vuitton of snowboards, no less), a Janis Joplin picture and a bamboo tree named Charlie, embrace the art in your home. Does that collection of crystals inspire you? A donkey hand-crafted out of soapstone is unquestionably art. For all you know it’s a Mexican quartz donkey, and Mexican quartz donkeys need loving artful homes, too.

Dwindling support from public sector funding avenues meant that the 2011 festival was facing an existential crisis earlier this year. With several Victoria events facing similar challenges, local real estate entrepreneur and blues aficionado Jack Petrie had seen enough and jumped into action.
“We’ve lost some great festivals,” said the affable Petrie, Managing Broker at Newport Realty. “Latin Caribbean was one of my favourites, and Roots Fest was just fabulous. Now that’s gone, too. Blues Bash represents something else: We have international people coming, and we have lots of local acts as well. That formula means that the festival doesn’t break the bank, so sponsors are easier to engage.” Petrie’s Newport Realty is one of several title sponsors for the event, including Homes & Living Magazine, Abstract Developments, CBI Health Group, and The Oyster at Pescatore’s Restaurant. The newfound support from the private sector has meant that the 2011 Blues Bash, an extremely popular gathering that regularly draws 15,000 people, will once again rock the capital with a mix of blues, soul, and R&B. Boasting headliners like multiinstrumentalist Lucky Peterson and harmonica god Charlie Musselwhite, the event continues to attract blues fans with a mix of free and ticket shows. The setting, a gorgeous outdoor stage on Victoria’s inner harbour, doesn’t hurt either.

Victoria is geared up to get down this Labour Day weekend with the return of the Vancouver Island Blues Bash to the Ship Point picnic site, September 2nd through 5th. The 17th edition of the festival boasts an eclectic line-up of hot headliners and local favourites, as well as a brand new sponsorship network – including Homes & Living Magazine – that has rescued the annual gathering from the edge of oblivion.

The civic spirit surrounding Blues Bash, though, was the biggest attraction for newcomers to the festival family, like Todd MacKenzie. “It attracts a diverse group of people from all ages,” said Mackenzie, Marketing Director for Abstract Developments, when asked about the importance of the festival. “I think the private sector is definitely going to get more involved to ensure that these things are around for the long term. We felt that it’s important to help support these events because once they’re gone it’s much harder to bring them back at that time.”

Changes to the eligibility for the province’s Community Gaming Grant meant that 2010 might have been the final year for the blues celebration, which has previously featured such high profile artists as Coco Montoya and Downchild Blues Band. Darryl Mar, Executive & Artistic Director of the Victoria Jazz Society (which organizes the event), was happy with the response to the local call out for support. “I was fairly confident that we would find the sponsors to enable the Blues Bash to continue on,” quipped Mar, putting a brave face on the situation. “I was overwhelmed by how quickly the five [title] sponsors we got on board for this years Blues Bash were secured.”

Mar added that the event is important not just as a community gathering, but also for the continued resurgence of the blues and, specifically, the west coast scene. “We know that Blues Bash is a very important aspect for the blues community on Vancouver Island,” he said. “We feature approximately 12 local or Island-based blues bands, and they use this as a showcase opportunity for their performance. I have seen a lot of younger artists coming to the forefront now.”

Still, it’s the vital role played by cultural events such as these that appeals most to Petrie. “I really believe in it. It’s easy to sit down with other sponsors and get them interested, not just because it’s the blues but because it’s about community,” he said. Hopefully, this means that the blues will echo in the harbour for years to come. According to Mar, when asked what will constitute a successful 2011 Vancouver Island Blues Bash, there’s only one way to make sure of that. “We need people to attend and show us that they want this festival.”

Jane Tice, Retail Director of the Gardens at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, says a modified Mediterranean climate is key to the uniqueness of Vancouver Island gardens. “We can grow things that can’t be grown in the rest of Canada because it’s too cold,” says Tice.” But we can also grow things that can’t be grown in the southern U.S. Shimmery stainless steel appliances, because it’s too hot.”

No wonder Victoria is known as the City of Gardens, and there are enough fantastic destination gardens, like Butchart
Gardens, Hatley Park National Historic Site, and Kitty Colman Woodland Gardens, to inspire a tourist friendly island garden trail (vancouverislandgardentrail.com). But island gardening isn’t all cake. “Many plants love our hot dry summers, but they’re not so crazy about the wet winters,” says Tice. Bianca Bodley, Manager of the Landscape Division of Landeca, Integrated Property Services, which provides hard and soft scaping from a team of designers, horticultural specialists and arborists, says Vancouver Island is also famous for unique microclimates. “One property may be like a little oven, while just across the street it’s cooler and the same plants can’t be grown successfully,” she says. Oceanside properties face special challenges, like windy conditions. As well, the joy of four season gardening is balanced by the struggle to keep the garden looking great for the whole year.

“You need to think about plants that will look good 365 days a year,” says Tice. “ Rhodos, for instance, are spectacular for a month, then they’re big green blobs, so you need to understory them.” Vancouver Island’s unique topography can also present challenges. Unlike the prairies, we’ve got thin topsoil and plenty of bedrock. But Bodley says, “If a garden has a lot of bedrock, that enables us to use it as a feature, and may encourage built structures, planting pockets and xeriscaping.” No question, Vancouver Island gardeners love to push botanical boundaries. They’re sophisticated plantaholics who troll garden centres for strange, unusual, and spectacular plants.

“What people really want”, says Bodley, “is a look and a feel in their gardens. We start working with concepts, get a big picture, and narrow it down to a plant palette.”

So although it’s easy to name some of Vancouver Island’s most popular plants like rhododendrons, hydrangeas, clematis, roses, hostas, peonies, sedums, hellebores, viburnums, pieris, skimmia, irises, tulips, geraniums and dahlias, gardening here is all about embracing what’s new and wonderful in the plant world. Bodley says succulents used to create living walls, and rain gardens and bio swales which pair thirsty plants with water coming off roofs are trending. Pan Asian themes incorporated with west coast themes are ever popular.

Treat marginals as “garden chocolates”delicious, but fleeting pleasures
For this fall, Tice suggests plants with interesting bark, like the paperbark maple (acer grissum), or for colour, the Flame Dogwoods and Kramer’s red heather. “Many ornamental grasses can take us through the fall,” adds Tice. Oakleaf hydrangeas turn bronze, witch hazel glows scarlet, and garden mums and asters provide soft yellow, pink and purple accents in the fall garden. Then there are those boundary pushing plants like bananas and phormiums, proof of Vancouver Island garden power to the prairie relatives, but not great at coping with cool weather. According to Tice and Bodley, these marginal plants are on their way “out”, while native plants are definitely ‘in’. Tice says you should treat marginals as “garden chocolates”delicious, but fleeting, pleasures. It’s definitely okay to savour the feeling of Canadian green thumb superiority they engender, the essence of gardening magic here on Vancouver Island.

A Gastronomic Adventure at Sooke Harbour House By Tracey Drake

On a sunny afternoon, the Homes & Living team took its maiden voyage aboard H&L’s new boat, a Sea Ray 280 Sundancer, aptly named Turn-a-page. The magazine staff excitedly cast off from the docks in front of our Selkirk Waterfront office, meandered through Victoria’s inner harbour and headed out to open waters. We were headed south, with a course set for Sooke Harbour House on Whiffen Spit Beach. None of us had been to Sooke by sea, and the trip was splendid. Since we were always within sight of the shore, the scenery was ever changing; lush green woodlands, sandy shorelines and an abundance of flying, swimming and sunning wildlife. Along the way, we passed ambling sailboats, laid back fishermen and a massive naval vessel that expectantly left us bobbing in its substantial wake.

As wonderful as the boat trip was; it paled in comparison to the unforgettable epicurean evening that awaited us.

We were greeted by owner and gracious innkeeper Frederique, who together with her husband Sinclair Philip bought Sooke Harbour House in 1979; a modest guesthouse with five tiny guestrooms, shared bathrooms and a dining area. Seven years later, ten new rooms were added and thus began a commitment to build large, spacious rooms with sumptuous amenities such as a massive stone fireplace, a tree-house style lofted bedroom and a bathtub for two with a million dollar ocean view. The innkeepers’ philosophy: offer guests the experience of a coastal hotel on the Pacific Ocean - serve local, regional, seasonal cuisine; grow native plants; decorate rooms with the work of local artists and furnish them with cabinetry, sinks and beds from local craftsmen. Our server and gastronomic guide for the evening was Brian Storen, acclaimed wine expert and Canada’s Sommelier of the Year in 2005. Brian took us on a culinary journey where we learned about the local foods we were enjoying, such as how the innkeepers insist on using only the best, fresh ingredients from the South Western Coast of Vancouver Island in every dish; fresh greens from the Sooke Harbour House’s own edible landscape that organically grows more than 200 herbs, vegetables and edible flowers. The roasted potato and fennel soup was a brilliant start to our meal; the venison stuffed chicken breast with morel jus was delectable; the rough eye rockfish in the crayfish bisque was a table favourite; and the carrot cake with the sweet woodruff and yoghurt crème icing was perfection.

Fat Burning Cardio for the Rest of Us Real Life Metabolism Boosting Exercises Anyone Can Do By Kyle Kolkman Haven’t we all been on a piece of exercise equipment at home or at the local gym and thinking… now what? Most people, even those who frequent a fitness centre on a regular basis are perplexed at the connection between the fat burn and target heart rate readings on the chart or digital readings in front of us.

What does it take to speed up fat burning and shed extra pounds?

Our bodies use different nutrients as fuel. The two main sources of fuel are carbohydrates and fat. Aerobic training is the key to transforming our sedentary fat storing bodies to efficient fat burning bodies. By definition, aerobic means ‘requiring oxygen’. Simply put, this means we
can use fat as a fuel when oxygen is available. Our bodies burn a lot of fat during long periods of mild to moderate aerobic activities that keep us within 55 to 70% of our target heart rate for 30 minutes or more. In this case, longer is better!

Fat burning exercises include walking, jogging, running, elliptical exercise trainer workouts, cycling and swimming. These are exercises that the average person can do at home, at work or at the gym; there is no need for

These ideals were showcased recently at a Canadian Citizenship ceremony hosted by Victoria’s Trafalgar/Pro Patria branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. A unique, emotional event that saw 50 new Canadians swear their allegiance to Canada, as well as their families, decorated veterans, and esteemed representatives of the judiciary and local government.
