EDITOR’S MESSAGE

“Spring is here,” or so sang Ella Fitzgerald once upon a time, although most Canadians have probably spent the last couple of months thinking more along the lines of another phrase from that song, “once there was this thing called spring.” After what has been a seemingly endless cold winter across the country, I know that for many—me included—springtime couldn’t come fast enough. While it’s nice to curl up under cozy throws, drink mugs of salted caramel cocoa and eat comforting food through the colder months, by the time March rolls around (okay, probably sooner) I’m pretty much ready to toss off the layers, sit in the sunshine and eat huge bowls of fresh veggies. Out of curiosity I asked some of the Homes & Living team what it is that they enjoy about spring. What topped the list? The way everything smells. Spring smells clean, fresh and full of the perfume of blooming flowers, grass and new life released from the grip of old man winter. The energy around and within us is also different. People are happier, with a bounce in their step and a smile on their face. At H&L we are washing off the last wisps of winter with our Kitchen & Bath issue, so when you’re sitting

12

on your favourite sunny patio for the first time in months—dreaming of transforming your tired rooms into gorgeous functional spaces—you’ll be up on all the latest trends and design ideas. In fact, this book is full of fabulous stories and images to spark your imagination so find a nice park bench, breathe in some of that fresh air, smile at the world around you and be inspired. Sincerely,

Michelle van der Merwe, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

FAR OUT HOMES

ASPIRATIONAL GLOBAL DWELLINGS

WORDS BY GOODY NIOSI PHOTOGRAPHS BY CAMERON NEILSON

THE FENNELL FLOATING RESIDENCE FITTING THE RHYTHM OF THE RIVER

For Portland, Oregon architect Robert Oshatz, every building site has its own poetry and every unique home he builds must not only fulfill a client’s dreams and wishes but also the poetry of the land. In the case of the Fennell Floating Residence, the challenge was even more exceptional—this home had to fit the rhythm of the river. Initially the client wanted a quick build but, Oshatz explains, “I design everything from the inside and work my way out so the structure functions just the way a person wants to live in it. Light comes in where they want sunlight coming in and stays out where they don’t want it; they have the views where they want to have the views. They are not adapting themselves in any way—it’s all being adapted to their way of life. Then the exterior of the structure is just a reflection of that internal space. You can’t really change the exterior without changing and affecting the interior space. They all work together.” That kind of care and thought takes time, not only in the planning and design but also in the building. And the site itself has to become part of the architecture.

28

“You’re building a structure that is at peace with its environment and people are at peace within the structure,” says Oshatz. His buildings seem to rise organically out of their surroundings, with curved contours prevalent when building on the west side of the Cascades and more defined edges evident on the arid east side. True to its location, the Fennell Floating Residence echoes the surface of the river—with stronger waves overshadowing the smaller ones and one large wave on the river side of the structure—so it’s like sitting inside a wake. The use of glulam beams, where wood pieces are end-jointed and arranged in horizontal layers or laminations, allows for graceful exterior curves that echo the contours of the river. And the expansive glass façade is broken up by two dramatic Douglas fir beams that frame the sunset. The master bedroom sits over a study, looking out over the great room and the river beyond. Just off the master bedroom a deep tub faces the view while a glass shower directly behind the tub ensures that a morning shower is an experience of pure beauty.

KITCHENS SECTION WORDS BY BEN VORST

HOT KITCHENS WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF BEING A FOODIE IN THE GOLDEN AGE OF KITCHEN DESIGN? IN-HOME ESPRESSO MACHINES? WIRELESS DIGITAL CONTROLS FOR APPLIANCES? CLIMATE-CONTROLLED WINE CELLAR CABINETS? THE LIST GOES ON.

LARGE GARDEN WINDOWS TIE THE REALMS OF FOOD AND FEASTING TOGETHER AT EVERY MEAL.

MOVE INTO THE LIGHT Above all, the interior designer in each of us embraces the most indulgent of modern advantages—the ability to have our cake and eat it, too. Modern technology and imaginative design trends are fine on their own, but their true value is in how they allow us to realize our dream spaces. Inside these pages you’ll find tangible evidence of a new era dawning in kitchen design, along with a few tips to guide you on your journey: six of the best “dream come true” kitchens in real homes. Want a fun, funky, functional space that both gathers the family and moves people around? You can have that. How about a sumptuous decked out kitchen that would fit right into a seaside villa and oozes elegant style … but still has integrated appliances and a durable prep area? It’s yours! The message from the design world is that you don’t need to compromise in the kitchen, whether that means a seamless transitional space that clicks into the overall vision or a pièce de résistance that will be a joy to work in and wake up to.

DISCRETE HIS-AND-HERS BASINS KEEP THE MORNING RUNNING SMOOTHLY; STYLISH DESIGN KEEPS BULKY COUNTERTOPS FROM CLUNKING UP THE OVERALL ROOM DESIGN.

BATHROOMS

SECTION WORDS BY BEN VORST

STYLISH SANCTUARIES CREATING THE PERFECT BATHROOM

WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN ROLLING OUT OF YOUR DREAMS AND INTO YOUR DREAMY ENSUITE? Creating a haven is what interior design is all about and this is exemplified in the bathroom: a sanctum inside a bigger sanctuary, there’s a reason they are also called restrooms. The site of our most intimate personal attention, the washroom is where we build ourselves up to face the day and where we later peel away the layers of armour we don in the outside world. It’s safety incarnate. As such a private and personalized area, the lavatory is a space to which we cannot dedicate enough planning and design, especially when building from scratch or executing a full remodel. It often uses the best materials and incorporates the most modern amenities, for both comfort and long-lasting functional integrity. Sinking time and effort into creating the perfect bathroom for yourself isn’t just an effort in self-indulgence—it’s architectural and psychological due diligence!

NATURAL TILE—WITH MINIMAL FINISH—KEEPS TEXTURE AT THE FOREFRONT OF ITS EFFECT.

BROAD-PLANK STRIPPED FLOORING MIMICS A WALK IN THE SAND TO START THE DAY.

OCEAN VISTAS ARE AN INSPIRING AND DYNAMIC START TO THE DAY, AND THE COMMANDING FEATURE TO SET THE ROOM THEME BY.

BATHROOM STYLE: RUSTIC/CONTEMPORARY SUMMARY: A PAEAN TO SEASIDE LIVING, REPLETE WITH STAND-ALONE ELEMENTS THAT IMBUE THE SPACE WITH SIMPLICITY. SOARING CEILINGS REFLECT THE BEACH VIEW OUTSIDE AND WORK HAND-IN-GLOVE WITH THE TALL MIRRORS, CREATING A TRANSITIONAL AURA. THE INTEGRATED COLOUR SCHEME—WITH NATURAL SUBSTANCES—MAKES THIS A VERY ZEN SPACE.

A WOODEN RACK IS A MUST IN A ROOM WITH MINIMAL TEXTILES.

SOAKER TUBS ANCHOR THE SPACE; LINEAR DESIGN KEEPS THE THEME CONSISTENT, WITHOUT BEING AUSTERE.
