Homes & Living magazine has also been busier than ever with our expansion into Vancouver for 2012. A very warm welcome to all our new readers in Greater Vancouver! In the pages of this inaugural issue, I am pleased to share my interview with BC Premier Christy Clark in our Celebrity Profile feature. Premier Clark was insightful, down to earth and a pleasure to talk with. Read the full article [page 66] to learn how Christy Clark sees the personal side of life as a woman, mother and native British Columbian. In British Columbia, it has been said that if you don`t like the weather, wait a few minutes and it`ll change. Celebrated journalist and H&L columnist Tony Parsons shares his unique and often humorous take on this subject with Tony’s Take on BC Weather [page 22]. If you love the winter weather of British Columbia, and want to see it in full force during storm season, read about Storm Warming at the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort in this issue’s Resort Escape [page 80]. | Tony’s Take on BC Weather

Bad weather always looks worse through a window

Tony’s Take on bc weather A very wise man named Kin Hubbard made this observation many years ago. And, when you think about it he was probably right on the money. Hubbard said; “Don`t knock the weather. If it didn`t change once in a while, nine out of ten people couldn`t start a conversation.”

Words by Tony Parsons

Well, spring lies ahead and we have a lot to talk about in British Columbia, don`t we? We`ll start with “isn’t this a great day?” Or, “If you don`t like the weather, wait a few minutes and it`ll change.” And a few months later, or perhaps even days later, the opener may be something like; ‘’Boy, do you think this rain will ever stop?” Or, if you live in the northern reaches of our province you might well ask,

HLMAGAZINE.COM

“Have you ever seen snow like this before?” Well, in truth, I have.

22

Tony Parsons. Born in England in 1939, Tony came to Canada as a 10 year old boy. Originally wanting to be lawyer, Tony was persuaded to become a broadcaster, and after decades of broadcasting in radio and television across Canada, Tony now works for CHEK and CBC Vancouver.

During the early days of our arrival in Canada, we saw titanic snow drifts sweeping across Ontario fields and snow banks piled so high you could barely see the sun hovering over them. Some days, when even the ploughs couldn`t negotiate the rural roads, we would stay cocooned in our warm parlours gathered around blazing wood fires waiting to be rescued, but secretly hoping help might never come at least until we`d run out of books to read and grilled cheese sandwiches to munch on. We knew, as someone once said, “Bad weather always looks worse through a window.” Of course, help always came and we eventually shrugged the snow off our shoulders and slid our way back to school or work.

| Tony’s Take on BC Weather

A change in the weather is sufficient to recreate the world and ourselves.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

— Marcel Proust

24

We live in a land of contrasts and Ontario`s weather is not what we experience in BC. So I have never seen the likes of those Eastern winters again. I`ve travelled around this province since arriving here decades ago. A lot of it I did in good company on a less than grand scale when we used to take BCTV`s News Hour on the road. Sometimes, depending on the distance to the next outpost, we had the luxury and convenience of flying. More often than not though, we used our own cars. I remember one Saturday morning, after one tour wound down, tackling the so-called “Connector” that linked Kelowna to Merritt and the Trans-Canada Highway. A snowstorm briefly escalated to dramatic proportions and left me wondering why I`d ever started the journey in the first place. Throughout the snowy ordeal, I was talking to the dog who accompanied me on the tour, reassuring him that I had learned long ago how to drive a car on an icy highway.

“The best thing one can do when it’s raining is to let it rain.”

— Longfellow

| Tony’s Take on BC Weather

I asked Claire Martin, my weather forecasting mate at CBC Vancouver, how tough her job is…

HLMAGAZINE.COM

She`s a bonafide meteorologist who says: “It`s location, location, location. I sound like a realtor, don’t I? Most of BC’s population lives in close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and so, most of us know all too well those ‘sunny today’ forecasts that end up grey, cloudy and drizzly. That`s the marine layer sliding in from off the coast. Just a slight shift in prevailing winds and that layer will slide in and ruin a forecast. For those that live in the interior,” Claire says: “BC is literally made up of Micro climates.” If you live in the valley in the autumn, you’ll see lots of foggy, grey mornings. And if you live closer to the mountains, you`ll see far more snow and clearer days. Whenever I’m asked for a forecast I always say, “Where exactly do you live in the Province?” It doesn`t come more authoritative than that I think.

26

There are those among us who will tell you that there`s no such thing as bad weather, just different weather. Rain can ruin your picnic, but it can also fill your rain barrel. Wind can punish, but it can blow the clouds away and make way for the sun. And sun can bake the earth, but also bring purpose to drab lives. And snow is snow, until you consider this quote: When it snows you have two choices - shovel or make snow angels. Above. National television weather presenter, Claire Martin, with CBC Vancouver.

SMALL SPACES

28

Words by Michelle Hopkins

Furniture Trends for Small Spaces |

FEB/MAR 2012

As British Columbia struggles with the soaring costs of homes, homebuilders are changing their vision of what families want in a house. In many BC cities, homeowners are selling their large family homes and choosing to downsize; trading space and responsibility for freedom, lifestyle and energy savings. This shrinking trend appears to be permanent as land becomes more and more scarce and pricey — there simply isn’t much left in the urban areas where people want to live.

29

| Furniture Trends for Small Spaces

The modern urban home wears many hats

HLMAGAZINE.COM

In many small condos and townhomes, dens double as guest rooms and offices, living rooms turn into bedrooms, and kitchens convert to dining spaces.

Living in a smaller home makes the homeowner rethink furniture needs. One solution is to dispose of excess furniture or de-clutter by getting rid of rarely used accessories. However, many homeowners are opting for multi-functional streamlined furniture instead. This trend opens up a world filled with innovative and compact furniture designs – so think well-made and think quality.

Above. From the collection of transformable space-saving furniture at Resource Furniture, two elegant solutions for that Study/Guest Room: The Poppiboard (left) and Lollibook (right) systems designed and manufactured in Italy. Available at Resource Furniture.

Furniture Trends for Small Spaces |

Not anymore! Niche industries and specialty furniture companies are popping up everywhere – offering attractive solutions to small space living. No longer is smaller furniture simply built to fit into a space, the hallmark of change is to create double duty but attractive pieces of furniture. Manufacturers have answered the call and are building pieces, which are at once multifunctional and sophisticated. “In Canada, we are catching up to a trend that has been going on in Europe for decades, and that is living in smaller homes,” says Peter McCutcheon, owner of Resource Furniture BC Ltd. “Now that people are living in less space, they expect their furniture to do more.” There was a time when Murphy beds were simply wall beds. Once your guests’ left for the day, the bed was pulled up and wasn’t of any other use.

Above. The many configurations of the Globe table, designed and manufactured in Italy. One of the many examples of transformable furniture available at Resource Furniture. Available at Resource Furniture.

“Today, we have Murphy beds that become coffee tables or incorporate dining room tables,” says McCutcheon. “Also, today’s new Murphy beds are far easier to raise because they are driven by hydraulics … so you can adjust the hydraulic tension so even grandma can bring it down.”

Even the traditional multi-functional hide-a-bed has evolved — there are some multifunctional sofas that convert into two separate swivel chairs; chairs that then fold out into two single beds. Other sofa options offer attractive storage drawers tucked underneath the seating area.

Choosing trendy yet timeless furnishings used to be difficult for a smaller floor plan

Today’s dual-purpose furniture doesn’t stop there. There are coffee tables with drawers for television remotes and magazines that switch open into a desk; regular beds transform into sectional sofas; children’s play desks transforms into two beds; and drop leaf rectangular tables, which when raised, turn into a dining room sized tables able to accommodate four to six people.

| Furniture Trends for Small Spaces

It is possible to live big in a small space In smaller spaces, closets and other hidden spaces become critical for easy living. Walk-in closets often double as storage and many condo owners have turned these spaces into an at home work station. Smart closet options, both in the kitchen and the bedroom have become a necessary element of successful small space living. For the man cave/living room, there are even leather reclining chairs with coolers built right into one of the armrests. “There are also ottomans which can become a regular size chair,” adds McCutcheon. “There are even beds designed with shelves in the base that make wardrobes and dressers superfluous.” It’s an ongoing evolution and the choices are getting increasingly more sophisticated and beautifully crafted. This new technology doesn’t come without a price. By comparison, versatile furniture can be more expensive than traditional furniture, but when you take into consideration the multifunctional capabilities, the price might well be worth it. “If you want good quality you will probably pay more for multi-functional furniture, but it will last decades,” says McCutcheon. Meanwhile, there was a time when furniture was a discretionary purchase. Today, more and more consumers are going for quality pieces — ones that stand the test of time. Perhaps one of the biggest influences in smaller furniture is technology. At the forefront of the movement is Italy, where manufacturers are creating innovative and contemporary pieces by teaming up with German engineers to work on hardware that is highly technologically advanced. “The lines coming out of Europe are extremely well-built, ergonomically functional, and are outfitted with hardware guaranteed for life,” says the longtime furniture retailer. “It might take another generation to get accustomed to this new trend, but it is one that is here to stay.”

In the end, the beauty of today’s smaller homes is that a lack of square footage doesn’t mean you have to forfeit style.

The 2012 Trend Report for Cutting Edge Kitchen Renovations

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Words by Ben Vorst

34

Above. Today’s modern kitchen is all about blending the minimalistic language of form, the elegance of the interior accessory and the high degree of functionality with cutting edge design. The Siematic S2 available at Redl Kitchen Studio.

There was a time that kitchen redesign was a tale of compromises: sacrificing style for function, flair for conformity, warmth for ease of cleaning. No longer: the explosion in kitchen options means that there is a design out there that should satisfy each and every one of us, regardless of peccadilloes (I’m talking to you, countertop deep-frying fans). Advanced technology, flexible storage, and a rethinking of colour are opening new doors to a fresh and useful kitchen.

All of us foodies have a dream deep down: to wake up one morning and find our tired old kitchen magically transformed into an inviting and functional workshop just waiting for our masterful skills to bring it to life. Now that many of us are ready to make that dream come true for ourselves it helps to have an idea of what kitchen options are hot with designers these days, so that we can create a splendid cooking (and eating) space that will be the envy of all our friends; here’s a few tips.

Fabulous Flooring

36

Building a dream kitchen, even in the planning stages, means going from the ground up (banish that vinyl to the garbage heap!). Many kitchens are flooded with sunlight, and there’s no better complement to a sunny room than the natural look of hardwood. Wood floors are comfortable, beautifully timeless and resilient. The hottest trends in kitchen flooring are exotic woods, including Brazilian Walnut and Siberian Birch. Also, reclaimed wood comes with the upshot of built-in character, doing away with the worry of that dreaded first mishap ding in a new floor.

Whatever wood you choose, go with the broadest boards you can find: they’re most attractive, make a room look visually larger, and feel nice under the feet. Tile floors are also a popular choice for kitchens, and there are a tremendous number of modern options to suit your taste for visually stunning tile. It can make fine china endangered and mornings a bit chillier (unless you go with in-floor heating), but there is no replacement for the classy effect of brilliant stone tile.

Understated swirls of gray and tan on cream lend a chic air in this delightfully adaptable palette. Cambria product shot provided by Colonial Countertops.

Insatiable Islands

Kitchen islands are a great place to show off both your refined taste and foresight; contemporary islands come with built-in features such as microwave ovens, refrigerated drawers, and virtual wine cellars, most with digital controls discreetly placed. Best of all, islands are highly visible and interactive, especially with bar-style seating around them; they are a fantastic way to show off your choice of exotic countertop materials, like cultured marble or attractive imported alternatives. A single slab of dazzling stone shows a taste for durability and fashion without going industrial.

Custom Look Cabinetry

The obsession with European-style, ultra-efficient cabinetry is fading – finally! Long banks of simple, uniform cabinets, adorned with (yawn) minimalist steel fittings, are falling away as quickly as they appeared, and people are returning to the host of original, craftsman-style cabinets of the past. While the institutional cabinet trend is cooling off in 2012, people are reminded that: • Cabinets do not all have to be the same size, shape, and colour • Flat doors create a wall-like effect – not perfect for dynamic, active areas • Simple can be classy, but so can ornate and expressive With this in mind, stained wood custom cabinets with profiles and mouldings are surging back into popularity, as are rustic touches like cracked paint and brass & copper fittings. If you plan to have a lot of visible stainless steel in your kitchen (instead of black glass or ceramic), consider the attractive complement of grille inserts for your cabinet doors, especially in black steel or even wrought iron – they’re instantly classic and tone down the contrast between wood grain and shiny metal. Even with vintage elements like these, the overall trend for 2012 is clever combination of old and new: cabinets with built-in appliances are the future of kitchens, make no mistake. With planning, cabinets can be safely installed to seamlessly house ovens, warming drawers, and dishwasher s, tucking away the less attractive parts of our essential appliances. This makes going with brighter colours or stains – an increasing trend – a bit of a challenge, but you can look for appliances that offer alternative finishes like burnished copper to create a more even flow.

FEB/MAR 2012

Even in 2012, no kitchen is complete these days without an island, or at least a breakfast bar. Indispensable for preparation, storage, even as a spot for informal meals, islands of all shapes and sizes are a staple of the modern kitchen. They’re also a great place to work at the laptop while cooking. If you have the space, take the plunge.

FUNCTIONALITY GETS FRESH IN 2012 Fashion Forward Plumbing

HLMAGAZINE.COM

No, we’re not talking the depths under the sink here; faucets and sink basins have come a long way in recent years. Elegant is the name of the game with faucets, kitchen or otherwise, and stainless steel is still the preferred choice, although different finishes like oiled bronze are gaining ground. High arc or gooseneck faucets are all the rage, as are faucets with complete water filtration (and even carbonation) systems built in – say goodbye to the old, clunky plastic water filter.

38

Colours that Whet the Appetite

Kitchens are visually busy places, so it’s not always easy to settle on a cohesive colour scheme that incorporates all of the elements that will be in it. When appliances came in black, white, and steel finishes, it was far too easy to settle on a neutral theme that left you with a chessboard for a kitchen… but who wants to feel like a pawn for half the day? Busting out of the black-white cycle is easier now, with the variety of finishes on accessories and the return to embracing natural substances like granite and wood. Harvest colours like burnt oranges, deep reds, soft browns and faded yellows are an increasingly popular choice. Still, by all accounts this year’s “hottest” colour for kitchens is going to be grey.

Kitchens - Well Done! |

Appliances that Work

The feel of the modern kitchen is still bound in some ways to its largest residents: the appliances. Thankfully, designers have been thinking outside the icebox for some time now, and the result is some fresh and funky ideas for cooking in style. Refrigerators will always be large, but that doesn’t mean they cannot be attractive. Innovations in cooling have translated into well insulated glass-fronted fridges (cutting down on the sterile metal aura), as well as refrigerated drawers that hide nicely in the cabinetry. Cooktops are becoming increasingly popular, freeing the stove from the oven; the independent cooktop can be installed in convenient countertop locations separate from the aforementioned wall oven. Cooktops come in a variety of cool designs, incorporating glass and ceramic (mostly) and they can use electrical, gas, or induction methods. Look for the hottest trend with raised pin cooktop elements if you want to impress. When you’re designing your dream kitchen in 2012, remember this:

You’re not going to renovate your kitchen every year, so plan carefully, and treat yourself to the best that your money can buy… you will thank yourself for many years to come.

| H&L’s Galleria: Area Rugs as an Art Form

Area Rugs as an

Art Form

I grew up amid the machine-made variety. I didn’t know rugs too precious to be stood on existed. My mother understood the value of area rugs, which seemed to her an innate appreciation of the art form. She did the best she could on her modest Saskatchewan budget, but had she access to the disposable income, I’m sure our home would have been adorned with at least one Persian beauty.

Even if she didn’t consciously know that the three-dimensional medallions on Persian rugs hold keys to unconsciousness states of being, I’m sure the Leo inside my mother secretly knew. Leos, after all, know everything, which is probably why they’re never surprised. If a red carpet can be the centre of attention and praise for millennia, so, too, can a Leo. Ancient rugs inspire the true art of celebrating the self, a celebration no Leo should ever be chastised for. The Centre of Attention is a happy place where Leos go to be played with as shiny things.

Nowadays Persian carpets mimic IKEA designs and IKEA designs mimic Persian carpets

Scheherazade undoubtedly understood the innocent seduction of magic when she told the story of Aladdin and his flying carpet. Handmade area rugs captivate and seduce like shiny, sparkly women. If we consider the essence of a woman “divine superfluous beauty” and define art as such, then it makes sense to treat area rugs as art in the home.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

From the geometrically complex Ayacucho designs of Peru, to the wildly contemporary sisal rugs of Brazil, area rugs play a significant role in the artistic traditions of cultures worldwide. The art of carpet and rug weaving dates back to 3000 B.C. when nomadic tribes in Turkey and Mongolia wove rugs from camels, sheep and goats to keep earthen floors warm.

40

Origin, Patterns and Interior Design Functionality

“The selective eye must be an experienced eye, an eye that knows the genuine pleasures of harmonious colours and textures, of sensitive line and proportion, of the play in contrasts of light and shade. The selective eye must see beyond immediate limitations, recognize possibilities that a fertile imagination suggests, and translate the difference between the genuine and the false.”

Words by Jill Lang

The oldest surviving area rug, the Pazyrych carpet, and was discovered in 1949 in the Pazyryk Valley of the Siberian Altai Mountains. Although exact origins remain unknown, the ancient carpet dates back to the fifth century B.C. and exhibit qualities found in most Oriental rugs, except it has a red field enclosed by two borders instead of one, and features design motifs seen in Persian and Assyrian architecture, rich colours absorbing symmetrical patterns and a hand-knotted technique still popular today. The Spring of Khosrows, one of the most magnificent carpets ever made dates back to 550 B.C. and belonged to the King of Persia. This enormous carpet was made of wool, silk, gold, silver and precious stones, and weighed a few tons.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Luckily for my clean Capricorn tastes, though, my mom would have never considered the tattered Pazyrych a dÊcor option upon which to construct her home. And, since our four-level-split couldn’t accommodate the Spring of Khosrows, my mother would have opted for an aesthetically pleasing Persian. Of course she knows that Persian rugs are among the most exquisite investment purchases you can make for your home.

42

Above. With a kaleidoscope of interest, it is easy to see how this fascinating carpet is considered a work of art.

YOUR KITCHEN, YOUR STYLE

“A pattern is either right or wrong...it is no stronger than its weakest point.” — William Morris

Nowadays in carpet stores throughout the mainland, you’ll see Persian rugs that mimic IKEA designs and IKEA designs that mimic Persian rugs. The Persians can take credit for some of the most beautiful rugs ever created, but all handmade area rugs from Turkey, Nepal and beyond - are full of inconsistencies, making them investment pieces that will only appreciate in value; no two carpets are alike and each is a gift from the divine as honest as birds chirping.

But, like Paramahansa Yogananda said, a carpet is just a carpet, shiny or otherwise. At their most basic, floor coverings add warmth and depth to a room, sound absorption and floor surface protection. Area rugs also moonlight as the simplest design element available to totally reinvent a room or to revitalize existing décor. And perhaps what makes these magical carpets art is not their investment value in units of money, but their ability, like art, to transcend human experience.

An interior that stands alone and yet never competes with the view

The architect firm on the project was Turner Architecture, led by Bob Turner. According to the homeowner, “the architect was inspired by our optimistic character and enthusiasm. The design intent was to assist in experiencing the daily drama of the sweeping ocean views and offer an appreciation for the natural beauty of the west coast.” Bob Turner’s vision was to create an open space, filled with natural light, with a scale and intimacy that makes the home a very special place. The unique design was intentional; created to optimize the unbelievable ocean views and urban vistas, while working effectively with the steeply sloping landscape.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Boda Construction was the builder chosen to make this homeowners dream a reality. As an established custom home builder in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Boda has a strong reputation built on quality assurance and delivering to the highest of standards. As evidenced in The Rockbank, the team at Boda Construction has extensive knowledge and work experience in planning, design, construction contracts, procedures and trade skills. Brian Boyd, a founding partner at Boda Construction is pleased with the custom build. “The homeowners wanted a home that complemented their lifestyle. We believe that The Rockbank project delivers on that prerequisite and perfectly represents the unique perspective of the homeowner. The residence is magnificent; a project we are proud of ”.

46

The Rockbank totals 5,188 square feet on three levels. Influenced entirely by the topography of the rocky 18,000 square foot lot, the home is narrow on the street side and then fans out to a curving front on the ocean side of the property. The Rockbank has a radial plan with a stunning vaulted curved roof. With a very modern take on a traditional centre hall plan, you only need to enter the foyer to be enthralled by the soaring ceilings above and the breathtaking views beyond.

The main floor of the home can be summed up as one massive owners’ retreat that measures 2,588 square feet. This level includes the foyer, an office to the left of the main entrance, and the living space to the right. An open concept gourmet kitchen leads gracefully into the living and dining spaces. The kitchen is spacious, modern and well-appointed with lots of cupboards to maintain the uncluttered feel, and a huge island that doubles as an exceptional breakfast bar. The dining space rests comfortably between the kitchen and living areas, and given the wall of glass and the ever changing ocean views and cityscapes, it is the perfect gathering place for food and celebration. The living space is elegant yet understated, comfortable yet not fussy or overdone. It reaches out to the ocean and still rests comfortably within the hub of the home. The ocean side feature wall showcases a fireplace to the living room on one side and an elevator that services all three floors.

An intriguing modern staircase of glass and aluminum unifies the two living level

The lower level is a sprawling 1,892 square feet and is the perfect haven for weekend guests. It is tucked far enough away from the homeowners for privacy and yet just a short jaunt up the magnificent glass and steel staircase (or elevator) for lounging and dinner parties. This level features three bedrooms, each with a private ensuite bathroom, large media room with access to the spectacular infinity pool overlooking the ocean, and a large double sized garage.

No square footage was wasted in the design and building of The Rockbank. The basement level features 382 square feet of well finished space; boasting a family sized laundry room, and a custom wood wine cellar. With an eye to the future, the basement level also has 326 square feet of unfinished space. Beyond the walls of The Rockbank, the exterior of the home is equally as magnificent. The hardscaping by Urban Niche Landscape Design is perfect for this craggy sloped lot. The sublime infinity edged pool with seamless hot tub, combined with the use of stone walls and minimalist terraced areas play perfectly with the interior. After all, it is impossible to compete with this view – so why fight it? For the interior design team, the challenge was to come up with a plan that would harmonize with the home’s unique and dramatic architecture. To make this happen, the interior designers chose to work with many natural materials; essentially bringing the outdoors inside. The massive vertical granite fireplace rises two levels, on both the exterior and interior of the home. Concrete features can be found inside and outside The Rockbank home, while glass and aluminum railings offer yet another ingenious way to continue the ‘inside out’ aesthetic.

FEB/MAR 2012

On the opposite side of the fireplace wall, the master bedroom is tucked away, with a huge dressing room, private ensuite spa bathroom and a separate space for an open concept deep soaker tub with a private view to the world beyond. Separating the sleeping area from the tub is a lovely partition wall that plays host to a well-designed vanity. The master retreat is the picture-perfect place to while away an entire Sunday afternoon, and it seems that this was an intentional part of the grand design scheme – calm, cozy and clean – unassuming perfection.

West Vancouver is one of those unique places where one really never needs to ‘go away’ on vacation – good living and natural beauty are right at home here

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Interior designer Kelly Griffiths, with Living Radius Architecture & Interior Design Inc. explains colour and texture choices. “We continued the theme of bringing the outside in, by using a palette of muted colours found in the surrounding landscape, sky and ocean.” The entire house is masterfully designed; a beautiful home with an interior that can stand alone, but never competes with the view. Warm grey porcelain and limestone floors are present throughout the residence, complemented by glass mosaic tiles in seaside grey, green, blue and turquoise on the curved walls in the bathrooms, kitchen and infinity pool. Definitely a palette that could come across as austere or cold, the clever use of custom teak cabinetry and maple doors lends a true layer of warmth that is palpable.

52

intentionally created with lithe, curved partitionstyle walls that never meet the ceilings above. The effect is unexpected but oh-so-right for this home’s design. The architect, builder and interior designers worked closely together to ensure that not only does the roof appear to be floating above the walls, but that every piece of furniture, accent and décor element is subdued, allowing the home to be the star; only sharing the spotlight with the mirrored curvilinear magnificence of the West Vancouver shoreline. A home that is one in a million - nestled into a community that has everything to offer. For those that crave the West Vancouver lifestyle and are smitten with The Rockbank, this home is for sale [at the time of publication] by Jason Soprovich at Prudential Sussex Realty, offered at $8.9M - a small price to pay for a slice of North Shore paradise.

The Mighty Arbutus |

When I am not busy painting homes and gardens, I paint the nearest arbutus tree. The radiant orange bark of the arbutus madrona, lit by the golden rays of sunset, stands out in the dark forest; the sinuous contortions of its branches make a charming counterpoint to the upright firs; the silky skin of the arbutus, almost human, begs to be stroked. The spirit of this place lives in the arbutus, and she is feminine.

The Saanich people used arbutus leaves and bark for medicinal purposes

Arbutus are rare north of Nanoose Bay, and not seen at Port Renfrew on the west coast. Known as the Pacific Madrone in America, it occurs as far south as the San Gabriel Mountains in California. The arbutus tree is at home on the east coast of Vancouver Island. You can also see it on the adjacent islands and nearby mainland coast. Victoria has an Arbutus Road (beyond the University) and Arbutus Way (on the north edge of Beacon Hill Park in Victoria). Arbutus trees form a canopy along Torquay Road near Gordon Head.

FEB/MAR 2012

The arbutus is a contradiction, Canada’s only native broadleaf evergreen. The west coast arbutus madrona was named for its resemblance to the Mediterranean strawberry tree (A. unedo), as Arbutus means ‘strawberry tree’ in Latin, and madrono is Spanish for “strawberry tree”. Ours is the Arbutus menziesii, named for the botanist who came with Captain Vancouver on his voyage of discovery.

In an ideal location, the arbutus can grow as tall as 80 feet, with a trunk diameter as much as 3 feet Above. While creating a commissioned painting of a waterfront home south of Patricia Bay, I couldn’t take my eyes off the magnificent tree standing by the shore. At the end of a day I waded out into the water where the cool of the evening was offset by the warmth radiating from the rocky shore.

The Mighty Arbutus |

They are graceful spirits of the forest and I think of them as ‘our beauties’

The contorted multi-limbed trunks often grow tenaciously from rocky outcrops. Because of its inability to compete with conifers on better growing sites, it forms a twisted under-storey among firs or chooses open sites with poor soils. Willing to endure dense shade, it requires at least partial top light for best growth. It seems to be happiest near the sea and thrives under the influence of fog. In favourable locations, the arbutus can be a stately tree from 60 to 80 feet high, with a straight clean trunk 2 to 3 feet in diameter. Large drooping clusters of fragrant white flowers, said to smell like buckwheat honey, form in the spring and resemble lilies of the valley. The round, orange-red berries appear in the fall and, though not eaten by humans, they are popular with birds. I have often painted a healthy specimen standing in the parking lot at the top of Beacon Hill in Victoria. It has bright orange skin, peeling as the tree grows to reveal patches of soft green. On the upper stem, limbs and twigs this skin is very thin, peeling off in irregular flakes, as it does on a sycamore. That “soft green” which is revealed is a sort of pistachio colour, or olive drab, showing areas of yellow ochre where the flakes peel back. On the lower trunk the bark is brown and loosely scaly, especially on the side away from the wind and weather. You can understand why it is a challenge for an artist.

Below. The orange-reds and deep shadow tones of the arbutus stand out against the cobalt blue of the ocean water. These make up a deeply satisfying colour scheme when matched with the pale ochre of dried summer grasses.

Canada’s only native broadleaf evergreen, the arbutus is a protected species

FEB/MAR 2012

If you have tried to bring one home you know it does not transplant easily. When people see me painting an arbutus they often tell me that they don’t like the ones in their yard at home. Apparently they are “messy” growers, throwing off leaves and branches all year round. And, because they are a protected species, you can’t just cut one down. You really have to accommodate yourself to an arbutus. The First Nations of this area held the arbutus in special regard. In a Straits Salish story, told by the late Chief Phillip Paul of the Saanich people, arbutus was the tree used by the survivors of the Great Flood to anchor their canoe to the top of Mount Newton. To this day, the Saanich people do not burn arbutus in their stoves, because of the important service this tree provided long ago.

Above. My friend Jim commissioned me to paint his favourite arbutus at his father’s home on Mayne Island. The sun sparkle on the water was a delight to capture, and as I stood on the deck my hosts plied me with sandwiches and wine. I call this “ideal working conditions”.

The Mighty Arbutus |

Above. Ted and Phyllis loaned me a boat to row out into Silva Bay, a sheltered waterway at the south tip of Gabriola Island. There is a deserted islet there where I imagine myself as Robinson Crusoe. Entirely undisturbed, I spent a few hours painting this grove of trees seen against the distant shoreline of the Coastal Range.

That said —

I’ve heard it is a very good hard wood to burn. Apparently it makes excellent charcoal. Because of its irregularly curving shapes and tendency to crack, it’s not often used for cabinet making. The dense, heavy, close-grained wood is pale reddish-brown with thin whitish sapwood; it cuts like soft wood when green, and becomes brittle when dry.

Above. The deck at Windsong, a hilltop home on Gabriola Island, provided me with expansive vistas but in this case I chose to paint a view looking directly into the woods. It’s a bit of a jungle, which makes painting the arbutus even more of a challenge.

Personally, I am content to just look. That gorgeous inflection of orange among the deep green forest catches my eye every time. They are graceful spirits of the forest and I think of them as ‘our beauties’.

The Saanich people were less interested in the wood than the leaves and bark. They use them for medicinal preparations for colds, stomach problems and post-childbirth contraception.

And to All

A Good Night Dreamy bedrooms with soothing colours and a relaxed sense of style

HLMAGAZINE.COM

We spend at least a quarter of our lives sleeping, or at least in our bedrooms trying to sleep! There are some important things that can be done to any bedroom to make it more comfortable, relaxing and sleep-inducing just by addressing key areas of the room… and style doesn’t have to be sacrificed either!

60

Start by creating a soothing and relaxing colour scheme. Choose soft, warm colours like Dulux China Rain, a warm gray/green, Martha Stewart Home Ice Rink, a warm gray/blue and Benjamin Moore Bed of Ferns 1511.

The bed is the focal point of any bedroom, so make sure that it really stands out. No matter how big or small the bedroom is, place lots of attention on this piece. A proper headboard, whether it is upholstered or wood, is important to keep the mattress and sheets in the right place as the night progresses. Bedskirts aren’t as popular as they use to be, so purchasing a platform bed or one with rails and a footboard can eliminate the need for skirts entirely. If your sleeping space is small, choose a low footboard that it won’t close the room in or make it feel smaller.

JANE LOCKHART: And to All A Good Night |

After. A deeper wall colour and the addition of white ceiling beams add architectural detail. The four-poster bed with flowing floor length sheers and bedding in warm, neutral tones is now the dramatic focal point in the elegant room.

Before. The beautiful bed dressed in a hodge podge of tailored bedding is understated in a plain beige room.

Pillows are the accents that cause the most division between couples. Women love them, men hate them! Adding large decorative euro shams are a good way to add softness to a large wood headboard if you sit up in bed to read. These square pillows also add an attractive decorative base to a bed and will hide your sleeping pillows that are often smaller and not always the best to look at.

FEB/MAR 2012

For bedding, there are multiple choices available. For sheets and pillow cases, cotton is the easiest fabric to deal with as it’s breathable, washable and comes in a wide variety of styles and colours. Consider shams and duvet covers in one of the new durable microfibre fabrics to create the look of suede; a nice addition to your bed in winter months. This chic, washable fabric will stand up to the wear and tear of pets and children, should they happen to inhabit your bed from time to time!

63

| JANE LOCKHART: And to All A Good Night

The bed is the focal point of any bedroom… make sure it really stands out

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Probably the most important element in a bedroom is lighting, both bedside and windows. Ultimately, a good night’s sleep is more likely to be achieved if your bedroom is entirely dark at night until you rise in the morning. Most city dwellers have become accustomed to the urban lights around them but it’s unhealthy to allow this light to enter your bedroom at night, as your body doesn’t know to shut down. Adding both light filtering blinds which provide privacy, and light during the day, paired with drapes with blackout lining are the ideal combination.

64

Bedroom lighting should be flexible so that you can have a lot of light when you need it, but low and soft when you want to relax. Bedside table lamps should be at least 26 inches high, so that it casts a large enough pool of light when you sit up in bed to read. A bright overhead light is also a good addition for tasks like cleaning, packing or making the bed. Put this light on a dimmer switch, since there will be times when you won’t want or need the maximum amount of light.

For comfort under foot, opt for either area rugs on hardwood flooring or add broadloom to your bedroom if you like the comfort of carpet to walk on daily. Make sure that the area rug covers the area where you get out of bed so you don’t have to step on a cold floor first thing in the morning. There are wonderful broadloom options for bedrooms that are modern and stylish if this is the route you want to take - anything from wool to bamboo are now available. Keep the bedroom as uncluttered as possible so when you do finally get the chance to enter it, it feels like a retreat. Keep as many papers and day-to-day items in other rooms or out of sight in a pretty desk or night stand. A comfy chair and ottoman set in a corner is the perfect place to curl up and read or watch the news before bedtime. A clutter-free space that is both comfortable and stylish will create an atmosphere designed for sleep so you’ll wake refreshed and ready for a new day.

Above. Add shine to your bedroom décor with a sprinkle of reflective accessories; crystal light fixtures, candles, mirrored accent furniture and accessories and shimmery satin fabrics.

Celebrity Profile: Premier Christy Clark |

Words by Tracey Drake While preparing for my interview with Premier Christy Clark, I had concerns in how to approach this article. After all, Homes & Living magazine doesn’t have a political column; we primarily concentrate on beautiful homes, interior design and lifestyle editorial. I needn’t have worried. Less than five minutes into our interview, it was clear to me that Christy Clark has an amazing personal side that H&L readers would love to learn about. After all, before she bravely dived into the role as the 35th Premier of this province in March 2011, Christy Clark was a woman with a point of view, a trailblazing mother with a genuine concern for family and community, and of course, a born and raised British Columbian. Those are qualities worth talking about...

Christy Clark was born in Burnaby, BC and aside from attending school at the Sorbonne in France and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland; Christy has lived her life happily in British Columbia. Her son, Hamish, was born in 2001, making her only the second woman in Canadian history to give birth while serving as a cabinet minister [Minister of Education]. Having spent so much of her time in the public eye, either in government or as a radio personality, it is fascinating that Christy Clark has managed to keep the down to earth heart and spirit of a true British Columbian. As a woman and mother, she has learned to turn to family and the community to help raise her son, so that she can best serve her community as Premier, and be a better parent.

Celebrity Profile:

Premier Christy Clark “The most important building block of any society is family”

“In 2001, when I served as Deputy Premier, I didn’t do such a good job of juggling my family and career, and everything suffered a little bit because of it. This time around, I admitted that I needed help, and I am now much more open to ask for that support from others: my hockey parents’ family, my school parents’ family and biological family. As a result, my son Hamish has this big, wonderful family and I worry less about being a working mom who can’t be all places, at all times.”

“British Columbia is a province full of people who care about each other”

68

She has managed to finally find balance between personal and professional obligations and felt that living in British Columbia, a place that is so accepting of different lifestyle choices and family units, makes it all possible. Premier Clark just recently returned home from a trade mission to India and China, two countries that believe that raising children is the lifelong job of the entire family and the community at large. In the Chinese and South Asian cultures, the tradition of having multiple generations in a household is still very much alive. Christy was aware of how closely these values reflected her own. “My take on it is this – the most important building block of any society is family. Governments and schools are not the people who instill character in our children. As a government, we need to recognize, support and honour the work that families do. That is at the core of why I decided to run for office.”

The Personal Side of christy clark Q&A: Where is your favourite vacation spot in British Columbia? “The Gulf Islands. My family got a cottage there in 1969, and since my father was a public school teacher, we would spend every summer there. It is a special place for me where I got to spend all summer long with both my mom and my dad. It is somewhere that I still love to get away to, whenever I can.”

What activities do you love to take part in with your son, Hamish? “I used to think of myself as a runner. I love to run. Actually, if truth be told, I don’t love running but it’s the quickest and most effective way to burn off a lot of calories. I do love kayaking and own a little kayak that I like to take out whenever I have time. Also, my son and I just recently took up skiing together. It was a sport that we can do together. Hamish was amazing – four hours into our first day and he was up on the blue runs. I love it because it’s a family sport and we get to spend time on the chairlift, talking and laughing together.”

HLMAGAZINE.COM

In your role as Premier, what is the most important legacy you would like to leave behind for future generations of British Columbians?

70

“I would like to leave a province where every child can get the education they need to fulfill their potential. We have to strive to be the smartest place on earth where every British Columbian has the chance to succeed. I want to make sure that I leave behind a province that is just as beautiful and clean as the way we found it.”

Premier Clark was a pleasure to speak with. She is engaging, energetic and teeming with enthusiasm to affect positive change for the province. Christy Clark is fiercely proud of being a British Columbian. “People will willingly share with me what’s on their hearts and what’s going on in their families. That is the best part of my job because I got into this business because I wanted to help others.” She is a firm believer that we are a province full of people who care about each other – that is one of BC’s unique and greatest qualities. “Although I was born and raised in British Columbia, we are mostly a province of people who have chosen to live here. What is better than that? I think that makes British Columbia the most special place in the country, and one of the best places in the world to live. And because people from different backgrounds choose this as home, as a people, we welcome difference here in British Columbia. I never found that when I lived in Edinburgh, Scotland or Paris, France and I missed the ocean.” Being near the ocean has a peaceful effect for Christy and she is one of those people who will always want to live near the water.

Christy Clark was instrumental in bringing the ‘Pink T-Shirt Day Anti-Bullying Campaign’ to British Columbia. After talking with a woman on her radio show who was a former bully, the woman challenged Christy to make a difference. “I didn’t really know what to do and then I read an article about those two boys in Nova Scotia who started the t-shirt movement and I decided to bring that to BC.” This was a life changing experience for Christy Clark, who had no idea how profoundly bullying affects so many people. She is adamant about her continuing commitment to this issue, and she reports she is working hard to get the government involved in this initiative as well.

Sofas Words by Roberto Bernardi

The Modern Synchronization of Function, Style and Luxury

The sofa plays a unique role in the Canadian household; always ready to play comforting friend or elegant host

The furniture we choose for our homes says a lot about who we are: flamboyant or reserved, indulgent or ascetic, daring or traditional, our home is an extension of our attitudes toward style, space, and sociability. When it comes to modern seating, today’s market offers a host of sensational sofa options – allowing every home body to express their unique style without sacrificing functionality or comfort.

Sofas hold a unique place in every household; they are central both in body and spirit. We count on them to be there when we come home exhausted, welcoming us with a familiar embrace. And yet we also lean on them to serve as a nexus of activity and hospitality during our social times, representing our desire to welcome friends and family into our home. As if this is not asking a lot, we also expect a couch to fit seamlessly into our overall vision of a stylish home, anchoring our most visible rooms and marking our place in the world of interior design.

74

Choosing an appropriate luxury chesterfield can be easy, if one has their priorities straight. First and foremost: What are your needs? Do you find yourself holding large parties where half the guests search longingly for a place to rest their weary limbs? Or do you need a family friendly gathering place for a party of five or less? Maybe you just need a personal hub, where you can gather yourself and enjoy a great book, or a fantastic West Coast lifestyle magazine?

Whatever the requirements, there’s a perfect option out there for you: don’t rest until you find it. The sofa is a very personal choice – an investment piece that should be a pleasure for as long as it stays in your home. Modern sofas come in as many styles, colours and patterns as can be imagined, but the upholstery still comes down to two main choices fabric or leather. The sumptuous nature of hide coverings make them attractive, not to mention durable, and the demand for leather home furnishings remains strong. Traditional fabric upholstery is much more dynamic, with a variety of choices, from casual cotton and linen, to formal velvet and damask, and all the jacquards, chenille and microfibre options in between. Classic buttoned sofas are still very popular thanks to their timeless, attractive design. The statement of style made by a couch, divan, settee, or well-placed chaise longue is often due to its shape and frame materials. These days,

the broad range includes traditional woods, steel, bronze, copper, and even rattan. The elegant use of richly grained and heavily lacquered woods is as popular as ever.

For a less austere touch that loses none of its class, a mix of rounded form (with ballooning armrests and elliptical shapes, at times), dark woods such as mahogany or ebony, and light and richly toned fabrics make a stellar but comfortable combination. Demilune loveseats are also gaining popularity, with the aesthetics of the clamshell back providing a picturesque backdrop for a tableau of domestic relaxation or formal encounters.

Sculptural sofa designs, like modular furniture, are a double-edged sword: they can make a room’s décor the talk of a party and a testament to refined taste… if they fit their surroundings. Always be aware of the space as a whole and the overall design priorities when choosing your furniture. For example, a down filled sofa with white linen slipcovers may look out of place in an industrial loft space.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

The balance between art and function is ever present in the modern sofa; there’s a philosophy behind every element, obvious or not. Deep, heavily cushioned pieces of furniture speak to an ethos of comfort and familiarity, of long hours in contemplation or engrossed in conversation. Remove the armrests, and the piece is suddenly a stopping point along a journey through the room, a juncture for new connections and fresh, open discourse. Loveseats demand intimacy (as the name suggests), whether old friends or new acquaintances. Sectional and corner sofas, too, are specifically designed to encourage interaction between people; their orientation also dissuades fixations on a single point (like a television), guiding the activities in the room and, therefore, in life.

76

Whatever your needs, there is a dream couch out there for you, your family and your home; one that incorporates the artistry and uniqueness that embodies your design aesthetic and lifestyle. Don’t settle for the wrong seat… when you do find your sensational sofa, jump on it.

RETIREMENT

LIVING BC Snowbirds: Purchasing an Investment/Rental Property in Vancouver

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Think of BC as synonymous with Arizona or Florida. The West Coast is Canada’s paradise, a home away from home in the heart of nature’s gleaming elegance, where golf courses flock like the salmon of Capistrano. More and more Canadian retirees are purchasing investment properties in BC, as opposed to warmer counterparts to the south, because you can golf all year round and keep health insurance costs down.

78

Snowbirds looking to purchase property in BC should first choose where in Vancouver they want to invest (perhaps False Creek, West Vancouver or North Vancouver), and then find a real estate agent who absorbs the ebbs and flows of the market. To determine the exact use of the property (investment vs. rental), the agent should be equipped to offer realistic estimates on costs, including mortgage payments, property taxes and strata maintenance fees, as well as offer suggestions to maximize revenue; location, location, location.

Above. Canadians are living longer than ever before; planning for the future is critical.

Retirement Living: BC Snowbirds |

However, properties purchased solely for investment [and rented out unfurnished] tend to have a wider selection to choose from. Local real estate professionals state that, on the lower mainland, condos are the wave of the future. Researching the condo market before you invest may indicate a higher demand for studio and one bedroom suites in the furnished market, for example, and two bedroom suites in the unfurnished market.

With location and condo layout in mind, choosing the right property management company could save snowbirds heaps of time and money. Managing a residence from afar can get complicated if a problem arises in the building or with a tenant, so it is advisable to hire a local property management company. An industry standard fee that property management companies charge is 10% of the monthly rental fee, and any other costs above that, the unit owner pay out of their snow-filled pockets. Although, a snowbird’s pockets wouldn’t be filled with snow if the winter was spent in a coastal rainforest, basking on golf courses in temperatures above zero -- no snow tires necessary.

FEB/MAR 2012

With location in mind, the core is usually a better investment. Retirees generally choose BC’s West Coast for its sparkly water, so residential pockets around a city’s centre are typically a good investment. BLACK ROCK 80

Oceanfront Resort One of the most stunning new outposts on Canada’s wild Pacific Coast

Resort Escape: Black Rock Oceanfront Resort |

The entire staff at Black Rock, starting at the top with general manager Adele Larkin, see storm season a little differently, and I was eager to experience their unique take – storm warming – firsthand. Deciding on the weekend girls getaway experience, I brought along a very dear friend, Karen Evans. What I hadn’t realized was how great it would be to see the resort through the fresh eyes of a newcomer, as I have stayed at Black Rock on three previous occasions, and Karen had never been.

Black Rock Oceanfront Resort is a luxuriously laid back, oceanfront resort property on Vancouver Island’s rugged Pacific Rim coast that everyone should experience at least once – especially during storm watching season. Built with an obvious respect for Mother Nature and the natural elements that surround the resort property, Black Rock effortlessly blends wood, glass, steel and rock into unpretentious architecture brilliance. The oceanfront suite we checked into was the epitome of understated elegance. Our guestroom featured a large living area with fireplace, complete gourmet kitchen with separate dining room, splendid sleeping quarters, and spa-inspired bathroom with heated floors, soaker tub and rain shower, and a furnished balcony with the most remarkable views. If you come to the Pacific Rim to do a little storm watching, the private terraces at Black Rock are where you want to be. The unobstructed views were too amazing for words; crashing waves and ever-changing scenery just metres away.

FEB/MAR 2012

One of the greatest winter treats in British Columbia is experiencing stormy weather on the west coast of Vancouver Island. One of the few places in the world where bad weather can be a really good thing, storm watching is a wondrous West Coast spectacle on British Columbia’s Pacific Rim. All winter long, a low pressure system builds, delivering storm after storm of natural spectacle – raging waters, turbulent shorelines and mesmerizing storm watching. One of the best places to witness the angry winter seas is in Ucluelet, BC, and specifically from the viewpoints at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort.

Karen and I only see each other a few times a year so we had a lot of girl talk to catch up on. Given the extremely warm and cozy room, it would have been easy to stay put, with a few bottles of good wine, for the entire weekend. I was beginning to understand why they called it storm warming here. Later the first night, we headed to the resort’s celebrated restaurant, Fetch, which is located in the main lodge building. The dining atmosphere is one of decidedly West Coast graciousness, with a touch of eclectic art and a wall of windows to the vast oceans below. Internationally acclaimed Executive Chef Morné Van Antwerp, who joined the Black Rock team in June 2011, is a South African born chef who came to Ucluelet from The Fullerton Hotels and Resorts in Singapore. Chef Morné brings a level of international flair to the new menus at Black Rock, but never forgets to add the infusion of local flavours. “Our menus are created with locally sourced seasonal ingredients in mind.”

Asking Chef Morné to choose the menu for us, Karen and I feasted on a magnificent dinner menu that included sampling two starters, four different main courses and a shared dessert. The dinner service was outstanding, the atmosphere was absolutely warming, and the food was simply sublime. The ‘warming’ experience continued the next morning when we arrived at the hotel’s Drift Spa. As spa director Judy Berwick explained, “Drift Spa is a sanctuary with signature treatment rooms, including a private couple’s massage room overlooking the ocean, a hydrotherapy tub, and a serene oceanfront lounge for total relaxation.”

Brand new $8000 canopy. Super low hours. Superb Condition! FEATURES: Spacious cockpit with a radar arch, swivel helm seat, portside companion lounge, convertible cockpit lounge, removable cockpit table, fold away transom lounge, wet bar complete with a cooler, cherry wood cabinetry, Corian countertops, fridge, freezer, microwave, sink, electric stove, shower, vanity and vacuflush toilette. A great package for cruising and entertaining!

Karen experienced a thalassotherapy seaweed soak; a treatment that uses seaweed nutrients, marine minerals, sea salts and heat to nurture and purify the body; leaving you rejuvenated and relaxed.

Thunderbird Yacht Sales 5776 Marine Drive West Vancouver, BC

I was treated to Drift’s signature Perfect Storm spa treatment which incorporates a thalasso seaweed gel wrap, Vichy shower, hot stones and aromatherapy massage to create an exceptionally unique spa experience. Drops of rain hit your body at a speed set to relieve sore muscles, revitalize the skin, and stimulate lymph circulation to rid toxins. The combination of the wrap, water shower, and massage was a wonderful treatment, which left me in a warm state of overall wellbeing for many days to follow.

Serious storm watching is one of those memorable life events that take your spirits to a deeper level. Black Rock simply adds elemental civility to the experience.

Maximizing your

Metabolism Words by Kyle Kolkman

Metabolism is the process whereby the body builds and maintains itself by breaking down food and nutrients to produce energy. It is often referred to how the body uses food by transforming it into energy the burning of calories. When you increase your metabolism, your body burns more calories and you experience higher energy levels. Boosting your metabolism is very helpful when seeking a healthy weight loss plan. One of the most important factors of a healthy metabolism is proper eating.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

It can be very tempting to blame your metabolism for weight gain, however the metabolism is a natural process, your body generally balances it to meet your individual needs.

84

It’s a brand new year - get started today!

It starts from the moment you wake up A person’s metabolism substantially slows down while sleeping, so eating a well-rounded breakfast soon after getting up is a great way to jump start your metabolism and to get your body burning stored fat as well as giving you energy to begin you day. No time for breakfast? I suggest squeezing half of lemon into a warm glass of water. This will get the metabolism started until you are able to eat.

Eat smaller meals more often Adopting this pattern provides a number of great benefits to both your health and weight loss goals. You’re less likely to overeat, and you’ll have a regular flow of energy to help keep you active, all the while your body will be burning calories more efficiently. If you skip meals your body will store what you eat as fat because it doesn’t know when it is going to get more energy.

Drink cold water The Canada Food Guide suggests we drink 8 or more glasses of water a day. Water intake helps with the

digestion and abortion of vitamins and essential nutrients. Here’s a hint: Drink your water cold! Cold water takes more energy to heat the water back up to body temperature, thus making your metabolism work harder for you.

Eat your food spicy! Eating spicy food boosts your body’s production of heat and the activity of your sympathetic nervous system (responsible for our fight or flight response), creating a spike in your metabolism.

Don’t stress the carbs Everyone is worried about carb intake, but in reality eating the right carbohydrates will also boost your metabolism. Healthy complex carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables and grains) fuel your metabolism. Consuming slow digesting, long lasting carbs like oatmeal, brown rice, whole grain cereal, whole wheat breads and pastas, as well as vegetables like broccoli, asparagus and squash, will make you feel full longer. Eating complex carb also makes your body work harder during the digestion process, which in turn burns more fat and maximizing your metabolism.

People with a high metabolism can generally eat more food without gaining additional weight

Our metabolism is responsible for using 60% of the calories that we take in and the remainder are used or burnt by our movements, such as exercise. Snack frequently. Healthy snacking prevents you from becoming too hungry. The hungrier you are the less control you have over what and how much you eat. Eat earlier in the day. Research has confirmed that you can lose weight simply by eating a substantial breakfast and lunch, while you are most active, and then a light dinner later in the day.

Go organic. Eating organic foods also helps to boost metabolism because the toxins in the pesticides interfere with the energy burning process.

Metabolism boosting foods: Breakfast: milk, oatmeal, whole grain cereal, nuts and organic protein Fruits and veggies for snacks: carrots, celery, cucumbers, grapefruits, oranges, and lemons

New Franchise Owners Homes & Living Magazine – Central Vancouver Island Edition

Perhaps it’s the recession; perhaps the trend in car design; or maybe our growing awareness of how others live: the fact is that downsizing has arrived in North America and will be the prevalent theme for years to come. In B.C, 9 out of 10 new developments are offering suites in the 300 to 600 square foot range, a far cry from the 1,200+ we are accustomed to.

Showcased in Victoria, Central Vancouver Island, and now Vancouver, Homes & Living magazine continues to expand through an exciting cross-country franchise initiative. All production, content, and quality control will be retained by the original Read Media editorial & design team – a dedicated group of creative professionals that have made this publication the success it is today and who share one thing: their love of Homes & Living magazine!

For almost 40 years Swiftsure Woodworkers (swiftsurewoodworkers.com) have been manufacturing cabinetry for some of the finer homes on the West Coast. Recognized for excellent craftsmanship and quality of design, the company is now diversifying to offer functional solutions for small spaces. Prototypes for a fold-away kitchen are being developed and will be displayed this Spring in a demonstration project in Victoria. Together with partners, Livtona Interior Design and Stoneage Marble, Swiftsure has acquired the distribution license for Resource Furniture in B.C, a New York based company specializing in imported space saving Italian furniture. RFBC has opened showrooms in Vancouver and Victoria and carries all the transformable systems advertised on their web site (resourcefurniture.com).
