erry Johal can honestly say, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he has created his family’s dream home. Upon walking into the opulent estate, you are greeted by lofty vaulted ceilings, an asymmetrical stairwell, breathtaking décor and superb craftsmanship throughout.

Johal, the exclusive second generation builder grew up building homes with his father, and in 2001, he started his own company — Terry Johal Developments Ltd. “I’ve been fortunate to build many beautiful, extravagant and challenging homes for my clients,” explains Johal. “When it was finally my turn to build something special for myself, I wanted to build something that reflected the essence of the craftsmanship from all the previous homes we so proudly built.”

Every home begins with a visionary and a dream. That’s when Johal decided to enlist the talented Michael Nixon of Broadmead Designs to create the architectural drawings, entrusting him with the task of assisting him in creating this masterpiece – a 1900s estate. “I wanted to make it an Uplands home in that it had a lot of traditional elements in regards to the exterior, mass and scale,” says Nixon.

“Certain aspects of the design, for example the entry and staircase, were similar to the original house.” The layout of the home, while grand, maintains a traditional feel with contemporary enhancements. A home that boasts five bedrooms and six bathrooms, The Stonecrest features two spectacular master retreats, one

on the top floor and one on the main floor, each with an ensuite fit for royalty. “The master bedroom [upstairs] is pretty generous,” says Nixon, referring to the steam bath and vanities. Binder Kelsall at ‘The Ensuite’ worked with Johal in deciding which fixtures would work best for his elegant powder room, bathroom and kitchen. of-the-art technology, while preserving the desired panache. “These are the latest designs, providing a traditional look in the home, but with modern fixtures,” explains Kelsall. From blueprints to completion, attention to detail and superior craftsmanship remained the top priority. The newly completed 8,000 square foot home is world class in every single regard. “The reason why we like this style of home is because it gives us a chance to really showcase the kind of craftsmanship that we can do,” says Johal.

The large open lot in prestigious Uplands allowed room for creativity, a sense of freedom and was essentially a blank canvas. Upon the initial visit to the property, all that remained were two sets of large granite columns; attributes that played a large role in the origin of the design and direction of the home.

While excavating the site, a massive white granite boulder was unearthed. For anyone else, this may have been an obstacle, but for Terry Johal it was a landscaping opportunity

and a monument that would represent the vigour that went into creating this magnificent residence. Two days later, inchby-inch, landscaper Pat Hicks managed to move the rock to the front of the property. “It was such an inspiring site that we named the home ‘Stonecrest’ and placed the name on the rock,” says Johal. The limestone columns, wrought iron staircase and high cathedral ceilings are but a few of the qualities that showcase the design style of the early 20th Century. “It’s the type of thing you’d see in Monaco,” he says of the space that Terry and his wife Angela furnished. Staying within the parameters of the Victorian 20th Century style, the furniture (from Dodd’s Furniture) played a key role in refining the home’s overall splendid look and feel. Continuity is prevalent in the way that the flooring moves fluidly through the expanse of the colonial residence. Hourigan’s Flooring laid 4,000 square-feet of 4 ¼ inch wide planks of maple wood with a rich cashmere finish. On the main floor, there is a

During the excavation phase, a massive white granite boulder was unearthed, and became Johal’s inspiration for the home’s name, Stonecrest. The inscribed boulder now sits proudly on the front lawn – a testament to the effort that went into making this dream a reality.

“Angela and I did all of the interior design; thankfully we have similar decorating tastes and usually agree on everything,” he says. “All of the trades people and suppliers worked to exhaustion to make this home the splendour it is. To create this type of home, it really takes a great team and I’m very proud of all of them.” Staying true to its history, Uplands was designed in the early 1900s and Johal wanted to create something that would have been built during that era — something stately. The Victorian style limestone columns framing the sitting room fireplace (by Lyonstone) are a significant architectural accent representative of that time period. Even the gardens (designed by Jason Parks) are formal; the manicured grass, cobblestone driveway and clipped hedging represent a garden that one might see in England. The outdoor area

polypropylene fibred carpet that Hourigan’s owner Martin Kalsbeek says is commonly used in high end custom homes. The elegant ambience is conveyed through wall-mounted ornate light fixtures. McLaren Lighting played a large role maintaining a traditional and elegant atmosphere throughout. The opulent chandeliers are a key inspiration from the architecture of that time, the antique distressed finishes and strands of beaded accents are reminiscent of genuine Victorian chandeliers, prevalent in any dining or seating area during that era (provided by Illuminations Lighting Solutions).

Perched on a hilltop, ‘SilverStone’ boasts expansive views of the Strait of Georgia, Mount Baker and the Olympic Mountains. Located on a 2,207-square-metre property, the three-storey home boasts 604 square metres of living space; all interior walls were removed in the renovation. The home features two 79-square-metre subterranean garages, each of which holds four vehicles. To accommodate the garages, Miller and his team lifted the house, supported it with beams and carved out the rock underneath.

At the front of the property, Duane Ensing Landscape Design manipulated the steep driveway in order to bring the grade down and create a more open space. (The driveway is now heated thanks to Gorge Electrical Services, which provided all electrical work on the property.) From here, a staircase meanders through a garden to the charming front porch; extensive West Coast-style rockwork provides continuity between the garden and exterior of the home. Sandy Nygaard of Nygaard Interior Design echoes Miller’s statements. “We tried to pay homage to the era of the house with a contemporary take on it,” she says. “It’s nice to juxtapose the two styles.” The designer—who lent her expertise to Victoria Homes & Living’s fall feature home, the ‘Touchstone’—incorporated an earthy colour palette, elegant mouldings, traditional paneling, rich millwork and chic finishing materials, including tiles, handles, knobs and door hardware.

was brought to life by landscapers Pat Hicks and Terry Romance, and is a space that the Johal family truly revels in. “I really enjoy the beauty of the landscape. We wanted these gardens to be very formal. John Charles Olmsted designed the Uplands community in 1907 to be a residential park like setting and we wanted to honour that with our grounds and landscaping.” Built to the highest of quality, there is meticulous attention to detail in every room, nook and cranny of the residence. Equipped with state-of-the-art home automation and security, a solar panel water heating system and a well water irrigation system, these features have earned the home a rating of 87 on the EnerGuide efficiency scale, giving it a platinum status in regards to energy consumption.

The adoration is shared amongst the team members, and Peter McCutcheon, president of Swiftsure Woodworker Ltd. agrees that a home of this calibre couldn’t be done without an exceptional team of experts. “Terry is one in a long list of local builders whose personal home builds we’ve had the privilege

of participating in,” says McCutcheon of his custom millwork and cabinetry company. Swiftsure caters to high end custom homes and has been in business in Victoria for 35 years, taking pride in the fact that there is no design that they cannot produce. “We take pride in that,” says McCutcheon.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

There are a lot of homes in Victoria that date back to that turn of the 20th century, and McCutcheon notes that it has become typical of the west coast to stay in tune with that era. To foster that look throughout the interior, Swiftsure did the work in the wine cellar, crafted the magnificent coffered ceilings in the office and completed all of the cabinetry and millwork throughout the expansive home.

38

”The style of cabinetry we used is full-heritage profiled face frame. We call it Fascina,” describes McCutcheon. It consists of walnut rails and stiles with solid walnut raised-panel inserts. The doors and drawer fronts are recessed flush with the frame of the cabinetry. This produces the look of fine furniture and is characteristic of homes from that era. Keys elements in a home are the kitchen and master suite, both of which McCutcheon says tips the scale when it comes to really selling the space. “These are the single most important areas in the home,” says McCutcheon. At times, Terry Johal finds himself sitting down with his wife Angela and two young children, taking in the sheer beauty of the home and marvelling at the masterpiece that’s been created.
