| editor’s message

E Editor’s Message It was an odd summer. The warm weather eluded us until late July; gardens were a little slower to blossom and the beaches were less crowded than usual. Yet, there was as much enthusiasm as ever for outdoor living, with people out and about keeping busy and enjoying life. That is the thing about islanders – we are nothing if not adaptable! We take it one day at a time, adapting to changing weather patterns, and loving the Vancouver Island lifestyle. Heading into fall, the pages of Homes & Living magazine echo that sense of adaptability and joie de vivre. H&L is honoured to have Trevor Linden as this issue’s celebrity profile. As hockey player and community hero turned property developer, Trevor has now brought his dynamism and business savvy to Vancouver Island. Inside on page 56, this is a story worth a read, as Trevor Linden signifies adaptation and a true love of life. On page 46, we are pleased to showcase Le Papillon by Westmark Construction, as this issue’s feature home. Situated on central Vancouver Island, this West Coast beauty offers 4,800 square feet of aesthetically appealing features,

magnificent coastal viewpoints and practical functionality. Le Papillon is the perfect example of what happens when a detail oriented custom home builder takes on the clients dream, and delivers well beyond their expectations. For a little island joie de vivre, read about the H&L road trip to Sooke Harbour House. My special thanks to innkeeper, Frederique Philips, who welcomed our crew with warm hospitality, great food and unforgettable wine pairings. If you are planning a weekend getaway, check out H&L Publisher, Robert Read’s island hop adventure aboard ‘Turn-a-page’ to Poets Cove on Pender Island. This inspirational fall issue is filled with decorating ideas, home design inspiration and lifestyle possibilities. Heading into cooler months, we avid do-it-yourself buffs are itching for an ‘inside’ project… the pages of this issue are sure to help you find a starting point if you are looking to do a little adapting of your own. Some Like it Hot Interior design punctuated with vibrant colour

By Jane Lockhart Jane Lockhart B.A.A.I.D, Intern, A.R.I.D.O. is principal Interior Designer with Jane Lockhart Interior Design in Toronto and host of Colour Confidential on W Network. Interior Design and Story by Jane Lockhart | Photography by Brandon BarrĂŠ Jane Lockhart Interior Design | www.janelockhart.com | info@janelockhart.com

For Claudia it was important to bring more natural light into the greatroom that includes an open concept, kitchen, dining and living room. That meant starting with the small windows. All the south-facing windows on the back of the house were enlarged and new ones were added to maximize the amount of available natural light. Arched tops add architectural detail to the windows and the flavor of traditional Mexican and European building styles that the couple is accustomed to.

FALL 2011

Claudia and her husband are originally from Mexico, so when I met them on a gray winter day in suburban Toronto, Claudia was warm and welcoming and gushed as she described to me the beauty of her home country. Even more than the gloomy cold and damp Canadian weather outside, for Claudia and her husband, transferred here from a southern region of the Mediterranean, it was the cold and bland interiors of Canadian homes that bothered them most‌too much gray, beige and white, just like the weather outside. So began our quest to develop a warm palette of deep, rich colours for the main floor and bring more light and life into their new Canadian home.

21

Shimmery stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops and cabinet lighting make the kitchen sparkle

Title Page: Temperatures soar when Jane creates a sizzling Mediterranean palette for a family who loves living with colour. Above: The high-contrast mix of rich cherry and warm white cabinets cooks up high style in the kitchen

All the new tall windows are elegantly dressed in full-length raw silk panels of shimmery copper, adding warmth and energy to the overall space. This warm, burnt orange colour is reflected in the hue of the new dark cherry kitchen island and inspired by the natural stone mini tiles on the backsplash. A glistening dark brown quartz counter top provides a durable, easy to maintain work surface. This rich earth tone anchors the room.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Natural maple wood floors in the living and dining rooms keep the space light and blend almost seamlessly into the kitchen where large sandstone coloured porcelain tiles add overall durability and are easy to maintain. Walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s Richmond Gold, a rich pumpkin colour, bring brightness and energy to the house.

22

Elegant but comfortable custom furniture was created for the dining and living rooms. To infuse these rooms with a rich palette, a vibrant range of hues were chosen for upholstery and drapery fabrics. The sofa, with its timeless traditional style is modernized by adding one long bench seat. This quality handcrafted piece upholstered in rich chocolate brown velvet is the perfect places to lounge for casual family nights or seat guests for more formal gatherings. Two sets of traditional armchairs upholstered in coppery orange silk, add additional seating and a traditional European feel. Throw pillows in rich Mediterranean and Mexican-inspired jewel tones like purple, copper, and chocolate are tossed about on each piece for a majestic but warm flavor.

Imagine.

How would YOUR ‘Dream Sunroom’ Look? A fabulous gas fireplace creates a strong focal point and adds a cozy feel to the space. Simply painted in a contrasting warm white, the fireplace, modeled after one Claudia remembered from Mexico, is accented with a hefty rustic beam mantel stained dark brown. A flat panel television set into the wall and cleverly framed with trim moulding defines the space as a true and elegant family room suitable for all occasions.

Attack

Here on the West Coast, we love to entertain. Being that the kitchen is the nucleus of the home, invariably, it’s where guests and family gather. Within this busy room, it is usually the countertops that receive top kudos because it’s there where everything begins. Homes & Living magazine has put together a list of different types of countertops to help you choose the right one for your family and lifestyle.

Corian Solid Surface Corian is made from a mix of stone and plastic materials. It made its debut in kitchens all over North America in the late 60s. Today’s Corian is a far cry from its predecessor. Corian comes in hundreds of colours and patterns and offers striking beauty and unmatched durability. The upside: You can use any cleaning agent on Corian, even abrasive ones and not damage them. Easy to install and the seams are virtually invisible. Consider this: Unlike granite or quartz, you cannot place hot pots on Corian - it will ruin the surface.

Contemporary Concrete Concrete countertops have been the rave in Europe for years and its gaining ground in North America. Concrete countertops look stunning; it’s not the concrete on your driveway. Decorative concrete encompasses a variety of techniques that can transform the look of standard poured concrete. Some of these techniques include staining, polishing, stamping, and epoxy coating (concrete paint) that can be used to give a concrete surface a faux finish. So you can have countertops that look centuries old or contemporary chic. The upside: you can place hot pots on concrete without damage. It is easy to clean, durable and look great in traditional or modern kitchens. Consider this: Concrete is prone to hairline cracks and stains. It is labour intensive to install, hence costly. It’s porous, so it must be sealed. If you can’t stand the thought of your countertops getting weathered over time, don’t get concrete.

Marble Work Surfaces Marble has been revered for its beauty and refinement for more than 3,000 years – it has been the treasured stone for artists and architects alike. Today, one of the hottest new trends in countertops is white marble. It looks clean, elegant and stunning in contemporary kitchens. The upside: If properly sealed, marble will never stain. A honed finish makes for easy maintenance. Consider this: It scratches and etches, but on the upside this gives it character.

Laminate Countertops

Laminates are made of layers of plastic and are the most affordable countertop product out there. They have vastly improved over the years, offering better finishes, textures and a plethora of colours. Laminates can mimic any stone and their three-dimensional effect can fool your fingers into thinking its natural stone. The upside: Inexpensive, easy to install and clean. Quality laminates look like natural stone. Consider this: Melts easily and is difficult to repair. Can be damaged by sharp knives and hot pots.

Granite has been the favoured choice for many homeowners. It is an extremely hard stone and its biggest draw is its natural and unique look. It also fits into any home dĂŠcor and has long enjoyed a real strong aesthetic appeal. Since it is a natural product, no granite slab is alike nor is its individual porosity. Therefore, some pieces may require regular maintenance, whereas Brazilian Black Galaxy, which may not absorb anything, even a sealant, may require very little. The upside: Easy to maintain, strong, durable and offers timeless appeal. Consider this: Granite is costly. Also, because it is a porous material, you must seal it to protect it from anything penetrating it, such as food and drink.

Tip: Each piece of granite is unique. Some granite countertops may require regular maintenance. Others, such as Brazilian Black Galaxy for example, may not absorb anything, even a sealant, and require minimal upkeep.

Tip: The experts we spoke to do not recommend quartz for outside use, or in a kitchen with lots of direct sunlight.

Timeless Quartz Quartz is considered one of nature’s strongest minerals, second only to diamonds. Quartz is made up of a composite of ground granite and/or stone bonded together to create a solid surface. One of its signature products is CaesarStone, which consists of 95 per cent quartz and a blend of polymer resins and colouring. CaesarStone harnesses the strong properties of quartz, without all the various colours in it. Its look is smooth, fresh and modern. Interior designers tout CaesarStone’s sleek, clean lines and selection of solid colours.

Butcher Block Professional chefs often choose a thick wooden butcher block for their own kitchen countertops. The species of choice are typically maple and white oak. That’s because these woods are strong and dense and hold up to the daily wear and tear of family living. Depending on your décor, wood or butcher block can look industrial or beautifully warm. The upside: Wood is easily cleaned with only soap and water and can be sanded and resealed as needed. Consider this: Over time, wood countertops can be damaged by water and stains. To cover scratches that inevitably will occur, it requires “food safe” oil sealants.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

The upside: Highly durable, strong, heat, stain resistant and eco-friendly.

32

Consider this: Extreme hot or cold temperatures can cause damage to your countertop. Over time, using a sharp knife directly on the surface will dull the Quartz surface countertop. Above: Photo provided by Stone Trends; Silestone® is the only Quartz countertop material in the world with Microban® antimicrobial protection; the industry’s largest slabs; 15 year material warranty; and a very comprehensive colour palette. Silestone® is the world’s leader in quality, food safe, antimicrobial working surfaces.

In the end, experts tell us that any new countertop should be tested for absorbency. Because quarried stone is cut into individual slabs and sealed separately, the need for additional sealant can only be determined once the countertop is installed. Professionals recommend that you place a wet cloth on your new countertop and leave it there for a minimum of 10 minutes. If a wet mark remains, a sealer should be applied. Once applied, a quality sealant should last five years.

A Gastronomic Adventure at Sooke Harbour House By Tracey Drake

Island Cruise Aboard H&L’s

On a sunny afternoon, the Homes & Living team took its maiden voyage aboard H&L’s new boat, a Sea Ray 280 Sundancer, aptly named Turn-a-page. The magazine staff excitedly cast off from the docks in front of our Selkirk Waterfront office, meandered through Victoria’s inner harbour and headed out to open waters. We were headed south, with a course set for Sooke Harbour House on Whiffen Spit Beach. None of us had been to Sooke by sea, and the trip was splendid. Since we were always within sight of the shore, the scenery was ever changing; lush green woodlands, sandy shorelines and an abundance of flying, swimming and sunning wildlife. Along the way, we passed ambling sailboats, laid back fishermen and a massive naval vessel that expectantly left us bobbing in its substantial wake.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

As wonderful as the boat trip was; it paled in comparison to the unforgettable epicurean evening that awaited us.

34

We were greeted by owner and gracious innkeeper Frederique, who together with her husband Sinclair Philip bought Sooke Harbour House in 1979; a modest guesthouse with five tiny guestrooms, shared bathrooms and a dining area. Seven years later, ten new rooms were added and thus began a commitment to build large, spacious rooms with sumptuous amenities such as a massive stone fireplace, a tree-house style lofted bedroom and a bathtub for two with a million dollar ocean view. The innkeepers’ philosophy: offer guests the experience of a coastal hotel on the Pacific Ocean - serve local, regional, seasonal cuisine; grow native plants; decorate rooms with the work of local artists and furnish them with cabinetry, sinks and beds from local craftsmen.

Today, Sooke Harbour House offers 28 luxurious guestrooms that epitomize the elegantly understated West Coast lifestyle – upscale, and yet in complete harmony with the natural surroundings. The experience of staying a night or two in a well-appointed room at Sooke Harbour House is further heightened by the inn’s world class dining. The food masters in-house during our culinary experience were Chefs Robin Jackson, Oliver Kienast and Matthias Conradi, who prepared a magnificent seven course feast for the H&L team.

Our server and gastronomic guide for the evening was Brian Storen, acclaimed wine expert and Canada’s Sommelier of the Year in 2005. Brian took us on a culinary journey where we learned about the local foods we were enjoying, such as how the innkeepers insist on using only the best, fresh ingredients from the South Western Coast of Vancouver Island in every dish, such as fresh greens from the Sooke Harbour House’s own edible landscape that organically grows more than 200 herbs, vegetables and edible flowers. The roasted potato and fennel soup was a brilliant start to our meal; the venison stuffed chicken breast with morel jus was delectable; the rough eye rockfish in the crayfish bisque was a table favourite; and the carrot cake with the sweet woodruff and yoghurt crème icing was perfection.

For each food course, our knowledgeable sommelier brought an exquisite wine pairing from their award winning wine cellar.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Brian’s wine choices, which accompanied six courses of our gourmet repast, were flawless. H&L favourites included the 2009 Indigo from Venturi Schulze Vineyards in Cobble Hill, the 2009 Rosato Pinot Noir Rose, and the 2009 Meyer Family Vineyard Tribute Series Chardonnay.

36

It would be impossible for an amateur foodie to adequately describe the delicate and often subtle nuances of the food and wine pairings. Without question, it is truly one of those events that everyone should experience, at least once in a lifetime. Leaving the food descriptions to the experts at Sooke Harbour House, I will finish with the actual H&L menu (to right) from that memorable evening…

RETIREMENT LIVING |

The Berwick Philosophy: Creating a welcoming atmosphere within beautiful surroundings is the Berwick way

Choosing a Retirement Residence: A Closer Look at Berwick Retirement Communities By Tracey Drake

In the summer edition of Homes & Living magazine, I talked about selling the family home to prepare for a move to a retirement residence. For this fall edition of Retirement Living, let’s assume the family house is now sold and the time to search for a retirement residence is now. With the cold, inconvenience and oftentimes loneliness of winter just around the corner, the autumn season is one of the most popular times to make the move. After researching the services and qualities the ideal retirement home would have, I went to speak with the experts at Berwick Retirement Communities, and took a tour of Berwick Royal Oak, where I was introduced to a whole new era in retirement community living.

FALL 2011

Berwick Retirement Communities is owned and collaboratively managed by Gordon Denford, President and Chris Denford, Vice President. Starting in 1989 with the original Berwick House in Victoria, this father and son team have been building distinctive, thoughtful and award winning retirement residences in British Columbia for more than twenty years. Berwick Retirement Communities, a member of BC Seniors Living Association, are an integral part of five B.C cities including Berwick House in Victoria, Berwick on the Lake in Nanaimo, Berwick Comox Valley, Berwick on the Park in Kamloops, and the Berwick Royal Oak.

41

| Retirement living

HLMAGAZINE.COM

There is an ample complement of staff at each of the Berwick residences; each of whom seems to have an intuitive understanding of what it takes to turn a large living facility into a warm, active and vivacious home. It was such a pleasant surprise to see that, although a Berwick resident gets to leave behind the chore, burden and expense of running a household, it was obvious they do not have to give up their autonomy, freedom or individual lifestyle.

42

Living accommodation, known as independent living suites, are generous in size; providing plenty of space for a resident to bring their own furniture, cherished antiques and favourite collectables to make it their own. Each suite - which range from studios to 2 bedrooms plus den - is equipped with a full bathroom, kitchenette, window coverings, and emergency response system, as well as smoke and heat detectors. Berwick Retirement Communities takes pride in also offering licensed care services, where a resident who requires increased assistance with activities of daily living can select from several optional levels of care.

RETIREMENT LIVING |

Included in the monthly rent at all Berwick retirement residences are three nutritiously delicious meals, snacks, activities, 24-hour emergency monitoring and all utilities except telephone and internet. Given the high cost of living on Vancouver Island, it was comforting to discover that my own elderly father could enjoy affordable elegance and move into a 1-bedroom suite with private balcony (averaging 600 square feet) at Berwick on the Lake for about $2,830 a month. It is unexpectedly budget friendly without a single compromise on comforts or conveniences.

At Berwick on the Lake, a typical dinner menu may include black bean and potato soup, butter poached salmon, mashed potatoes, asparagus and stuffed tomatoes and crème caramel – yum!

“Our settings are inspiring, our amenities superb, and our staff is attentive and genuine. Come and live with us in the nicest surroundings imaginable.” - Berwick Retirement Communities website

Chris Denford talked to me about how the Berwick residences harmoniously link Mother Nature with interior design, and that outdoor spaces are a key component during the planning and building phases. “The outdoor gardens become a natural extension of the interior spaces. It was an intentional build feature that each suite has a balcony or patio that overlooks a garden or landscaped area; giving each resident a serene, ever changing exterior view.”

We welcome comparisons.

Berwick on the Lake Nanaimo and Berwick Comox Valley are retirement residences that have set high standards for seniors’ living on Vancouver Island and across BC. Our residences push the boundaries for quality of services and outstanding amenities. We encourage prospective residents to shop around and compare value. Meals at any Berwick home are a special occasion – every day of the week. Gordon Denford reiterates the importance of the dining experience. “Our dining rooms are designed to encourage interaction among residents and between staff and residents. We are great believers in having everybody together so that every meal is a social event, even breakfast. We set out to create a genuine community in every Berwick.” 2010 was a banner year for Berwick Retirement Communities. Gordon Denford was awarded the Governors’ Lifetime Achievement Award, and Berwick on the Lake was honoured with a Sterling Award for Customer Service by the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce.

It is clear that the Denford dynamic duo, backed by exceptionally committed staff, has placed Berwick Retirement Communities well ahead of the competition. By building truly liveable, affordable residences that are undeniably resort-style, yet without losing the familiarity of home, the company has set the standard for the future of retirement living. The Berwick Retirement Communities website, online at berwickrc.com boasts: “Our settings are inspiring, our amenities superb, and our staff is attentive and genuine. The sun sets behind the grey of the ocean, casting just enough light to make the arbutus trees seem to glow against a calming backdrop of sand and rock. This typical West Coast beauty is the inspiration for ‘Le Papillon,’ a 4,800 square foot custom home, built by Westmark Construction, on Central Vancouver Island that is anything but usual.

centre stage; creating a dynamic, breathing focus that changes with the seasons. An insatiable desire to connect visitors with nature and to achieve an open, free flowing space fueled the homeowners in their quest to infuse every detail with timeless beauty and long term functionality.

The full service custom home building company completes its own carpentry, concrete, framing, interior finishing and exterior installations, which means a consistently high standard in all phases of the build. Most importantly, however, is the company’s ability to respond to changes and challenges along the way.

There is no question the design was built around the awe-inspiring view of the ocean and surrounding islands. Generous glazing and uninterrupted sightlines make it visible from every room in the home. Set against a neutral palette that provides balance and contrast, the view remains

Bringing this dream home to life required careful attention to detail, flexibility in the design and a genuine drive to meet challenges as they arose. With 20 years and exceptional values behind it, Westmark Construction, a Nanaimo based contracting company, was a natural choice.

“Our philosophy is working to make adjustments or suggestions that further improve the project for the client,” says Westmark Construction owner Chris Lundy. “In this case, we set out to achieve the best possible outcome for the site and for the structure.”

The home begins its marriage with coastal wilderness on the exterior with single cedar shake shingles and natural stone. Locally milled fir timber beams and cedar soffits are the most obvious of the finer exterior details - woven corners on the cladding and corrosion resistant anodized aluminum exterior fixtures are some of the more intricate features.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

The carefully designed building shape aligns the home with the distant mountains and broader overhangs help control sun penetration for shade in the summer, and southern exposure in the fall and winter.

48

Westmark went to great lengths to keep lines ‘out of sight’ to maintain the view

But the most prominent influence on the home’s orientation and geometry is the 1,000 cubic foot granite outcropping on the east ocean side that oversteps the building footprint.

Slate rock step stones are built into the natural seams of the rock, creating pathways to the ocean. Down the slope created by the rock face, three tiers of cast-in-place concrete planter boxes are a more aesthetically pleasing choice over railings, which would have otherwise been necessary on every two-foot drop.

‘The rock’ was an obstacle-turned-opportunity that became one of the home’s most prized features. The first hurdle it presented was that its existence modified the average grade of the lot, which is used to determine whether the home met the neighbourhood’s height requirement. The roof design accommodated, with a low pitch and a series of peaks that nest together.

Wherever possible the landscaping; a mix of turf, boulder-edged mulch beds, and custom cut concrete slabs with exposed aggregate finish, follows the natural shape and slope of the land. The result is a series of swooping lines that curve like waves along a flowing coastline.

Westmark Construction implemented a modification to the footprint and precision mathematics, and now the home is built around the rock to the edges of its potential footprint. Set into the rear exterior patio, the structure is the home’s strongest physical connection to nature, offering a natural footrest while taking in an unobstructed view.

Orienting the home around the rock was an important step in the overall creation of a seamless interface between the indoors and outdoors, says John Larson, designer with CA Design in Qualicum. “While the views were fantastic, we were also cognizant of the need for sheltered outdoor living space.”

The kitchen, designed with an aesthetic that welcomes it in to the rest of the home as a place to entertain and converse, features a sunroom at the far end with a door leading out to the front courtyard - a perfect circle and easy flow. Highly functional granite, in black and white marbled patterned waterfalls over the far edge, creating drama that invites the eye to the floor. The island meets a double tiered oak top seating bar at a perpendicular angle; asymmetrically placed to the right. Beyond this, an oak dining set is a natural stop on the way to a walk-up beverage bar, also in edge grain oak. “We went to great lengths to keep things with out of sight lines and to maintain the view,” says Jeremy Larson. “It is uncluttered, but is still an intimate space.” Two ovens are tucked away into the right wall and a convection microwave is hidden below on the pop-up side of the seating bar. Even the refrigerator is out of sight, set into a cupboard recess to the right of the sink, which is balanced by an equally sized pantry to the left. The great room, beverage bar, eating area, and kitchen are completely open and connected by the serene colour palette and complementing textures. Three blown glass mirrored pendant lights, which suspend over the granite counter, are silver in colour until activated when they turn a fiery orange that ties in with the wood elements.

The ensuite bathroom is an oasis in simplicity and natural beauty. Carrera marble is sophisticated and fresh on the floors, counters and walk-in shower walls. It also surrounds the jet soaker tub which, situated in front of bifold windows and beneath a skylight, is as close to an outdoor hot tub as one can get.

A hallway of almost solid glazing stretches past the bedroom to the powder room and office. In the powder room, the Basalt tile runs up the wall from the floor, and is punctuated by a wide, surface mount, rectangular marble sink with a waterfall faucet. In the office, ‘his and hers’ work stations are situated on a wall-length floating shelf to the left beneath more glazing, and an entire right wall of shelving and drawer space make this a room of comfort and informal functionality. Details of the home’s construction keep an eye to the future and on sustainability—it is wired for solar power and electric vehicle hook-ups are in place. Infloor heating throughout is a nice touch, as is locally milled timber throughout. A snug R-50 insulation in the ceiling and motion sensors in the closets and in the ensuite help with energy efficiency, and the open glazing negates the need for air conditioning. Leading to the lower level, a view from a window in the stairwell stimulates the space, and glass half walls keep the area open and contemporary. The custom milled fir steps are a hybrid floating design, notched into side panels with no risers, and stripes are routered in at the edges for safety. At the bottom of the stairs, a spectacular wine cellar behind a glass wall offers an elegant vintage view of the collection highlighted by pot lights. The back wall of the wine cellar is an exterior below grade wall, which maintains natural cooling.

Celebrity Profile Linden’s Legacy

Hockey Hero, Community Champion, Fitness Advocate & Now Property Developer By Tracey Drake

Most people know Trevor Linden as #16 – Captain Canuck; perhaps, the most famous of all hockey players to play for the Vancouver Canucks, twice. Many of those same people might be surprized to learn just how many facets there are to Trevor Linden, and how his hockey career has opened doors down so many different avenues of his life – and how many other lives he has touched in the process.

Hockey Hero Trevor Linden retired from hockey on June 11, 2008, exactly twenty years to the day that he was drafted. Linden spent the bulk of his illustrious career with the Vancouver Canucks, but also played on other NHL teams including the Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders and the Washington Capitals. To this day, and especially on the heels of an electrifying 2011 Canucks season that saw our team go all the way to the 7th game of the Stanley Cup finals, Trevor Linden continues to be regarded as a gentlemanly and legendary public figure to BC hockey fans.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Throughout his renowned hockey career, Trevor Linden amassed 867 career points while playing in 1,382 regular season hockey games. Linden is also fortunate to include such professional accomplishments as playing in two NHL All-Star Games; and representing Canada alongside Wayne Gretzky in both the 1996 World Cup of Hockey and the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

58

From 1998 through 2006, Trevor Linden also served as a collaborative and proactive President of the NHL Players’ Association. When asked, Trevor was quick to identify Hockey Hall of Famer and fellow WHL Medicine Hat Tigers alumnus Lanny McDonald, as his all-time favourite hockey player. Top of mind career highlights include the 1994 Canucks Stanley Cup final and his Canadian Olympic experience in 1998. With a career that spanned twenty years, it must be difficult to pick favourite moments, best games and celebrated events. Linden has been fortunate to be at the centre of so many, and not by chance.

In 2010, Trevor Linden was named to the Order of Canada for ‘his ongoing sportsmanship and community engagement as a respected leader both on and off the ice’

MARKETING • SOCIAL MEDIA • WEB DESIGN • SEO Trevor Linden has long been known for his commitment to his community, province and country; a man that has never been unwilling or even remotely hesitant when it comes to giving back. Established in 1997, the Trevor Linden Foundation actively supports youth and children with special needs, working diligently and tirelessly to better the lives of our Canadian youth through educational and sport related initiatives. For the past fourteen years, the Trevor Linden Foundation has joined forces with other charities in some of the cities where Trevor once graced the ice – Vancouver (as well as greater British Columbia), Montreal and New York. It is no secret that Trevor’s humble personality, love for people and genuine caring nature has touched the lives of many – including children. From simple guidance from a famed role model, to reaching out to children with terminal illness, Linden takes a personal interest in everyone he meets. To this point, the Trevor Linden Foundation will be a lasting testament. Trevor takes great pride in lending his name and time to worthwhile charities, especially when young people are involved. Although Trevor and his wife have no children of their own, some of the most noteworthy charities Linden has worked alongside include Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, Canadian Cancer Society BC & Yukon Preventative Health Campaign, Cops for Cancer, BC Children’s Hospital Capital Campaign, BC Cancer Foundation, Ronald McDonald House BC and the Zajac Ranch. It is not unexpected that Trevor Linden has been publicly acknowledged for his selfless commitment to British Columbia and Canada. In 2003, Trevor was awarded the Order of British Columbia, and in 2010 was honoured with the Order of Canada for his contribution to sport and community, one of only 5,800 inductees. Linden was also inducted into the BC Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010.

Fitness Advocate As a lifelong athlete, Trevor Linden has led a healthy, active lifestyle, and believes that fitness should be a vital part of everyone’s life – and so, once again, he set out to do something about it, opening a chain of fitness centres, currently with two locations – Burnaby and Coquitlam – with two more locations already in the works. Trevor was very enthusiastic to talk about Club 16 - Trevor Linden Fitness. “It matters to us that you are accepted, respected, and above all not judged. We offer a non-intimidating atmosphere where anyone and everyone can feel comfortable and make the desired lifestyle changes, inside and out.” Club 16 - Trevor Linden Fitness was designed for the average person who just wants to work out affordably and have a little fun in the process. In recent years, Linden has rekindled a passion for cycling. In 2007, with cycling teammate John Ramsden, Trevor Linden competed in the gruelling 8-day, 600 kilometre trek across the European Alps. Team Linden and Ramsden finished a respectable 48th out of 122 teams competing. Health and fitness have always figured prominently into the life of Trevor Linden. Whether it was career, philanthropic or athletic, everything that Trevor partakes in – personal, charitable and now property development – has a fitness component. .

Sitting proudly on the corner of Herald and Government Streets, this exciting new urban development is located in the trendy design district, on the edge of Chinatown and just a few blocks from the inner harbour. 601 Herald is a collection of boutique residences, slated to offer the ultimate condo living experience for the savvy urbanite. The optional loft spaces and Zen garden terraces are very popular with prospective buyers.

Resort Escape: Poets Cove Resort & Spa

A Small Island Resort That’s Big on Amenities A few years back Homes & Living Magazine travelled to Pender Island and spent an unforgettable weekend at Poets Cove Resort & Spa, and have longed to return ever since. Pender Island is an easy 40 minute ferry ride from Sidney, BC, but this time we cruised on H&L’s 30’ Sea Ray cruiser ‘Turn-a-page’. Pender Island lies in a rain shadow of Vancouver Island and the Olympic Mountain range and enjoys a sub-Mediterranean climate with significantly less precipitation and more sunshine. This coupled with the fact that Pender Island offers more public beach access than any other Gulf Island, and it is no wonder we couldn’t wait to return. On this trip to Pender Island, we had the pleasure of enjoying the company of Wayne & Holly Bowles, owners of Complete Window Services in Parksville, renowned for quality windows and custom renovations. Homes & Living magazine was privileged to have featured the Bowles residence; a masterful renovation that included a massive timber framed great room, in H&L’s spring 2008 Central Island edition.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

H&L’s head office is fortunate to be located on the Selkirk Waterway in Victoria with the convenience of a dock at our doorstep, not to mention the sensational patio and fine dining of

Glo Restaurant, as our neighbours (I think I’ve put on 10 pounds since we moved our offices here)! Wayne and Holly met us at Glo where we enjoyed a cold beverage and some appetizers, and then we set course for Poets Cove. Arriving at Pender Island by sea is breathtaking, especially at dusk as the lights from Poets Cove shine a welcoming glow out into its harbour. You can hear the laughter and chatter of people enjoying the patio as they look out over the cove… what an arrival. Poets Cove Resort & Spa consists of the main lodge, cottages and villas. The Villas and cottages offer a true ‘home away from home’ experience with amenities such as a full kitchen, BBQ on an ocean view deck, and ensuite laundry, to name but a few. A private villa or cottage is the perfect choice for a romantic getaway or a family vacation. We stayed in the main lodge, which sits right on the waterfront with breathtaking water views. Once we check in, we relaxed on our private balcony with a glass of ice cold champagne overlooking the harbour, million dollar yachts and a spectacular sunset.

After a restful sleep, we enjoyed coffee, fresh fruit and pasty on our balcony while Wayne and Holly experienced the renowned Susurrus Spa, and were treated to a relaxing 1-hour massage. Just outside the spa, there is a sandstone steam cave tucked beneath a waterfall, and a hot tub that sits on a bluff at the base of the waterfalls, overlooking the habour. After taking Turn-a-page out for an afternoon cruise around Pender Island, we returned to relax in one of two heated swimming pools before we headed to our rooms to prepare for a sensational meal in the world-class Aurora Restaurant, which serves exceptional West Coast cuisine. The chefs at Aurora strive to serve fresh local produce, grown in Poets own garden. Even the coffee is roasted locally right on Pender Island.

We had the honour of being served by Blair Hunter, Food & Beverage Director at Poets Cove. Blair and our chef that evening, Chris Blazeiko and his staff were absolutely outstanding, as

expected. Service was remarkable and the menu chosen for us (see menu on following spread) was sensational. Retiring to our terrific rooms overlooking the harbour for a restful sleep, we awoke to enjoy a wonderful Sunday brunch with Marketing Director, Ina Timmer. Ina told us about the many activities available on Pender Island, and we look forward to returning again to visit such spots as Pender Island’s own winery, Morning Bay. This prestigious winery, owned and operated by Keith Watt & Barbara Reid, was awarded a bronze medal at the 2008 Finger Lakes International Wine Competition. beating out top wineries from all over USA and Canada. The New York based festival is one of the largest and most prestigious wine competitions in the United States. For our readers who are also wine connoisseurs, you can order wine directly from their website at morningbay.ca, or better yet, take a trip to Pender Island, stay at Poets Cove and take a tour of the wonderful island vineyards.

Mix and match accessories of different sizes, colours and textures to add comfort, warmth and eclectic elegance to a space

FALL TRENDS |

Saying goodbye to summer is never easy, especially for West Coasters… we love staying active and spending time outdoors. Rather than mourning the loss of our favourite season, focus on getting ready for fall by redecorating, organizing and cutting the clutter. H&L loves to make home life easier for its readers. From the H&L design files and industry sources, let us share a few design trends to watch for this fall, coupled with stress-free ways to reorganize and spice up any room in your home this season.

Changing the décor theme of your home can be expensive, labour intensive and at times, a little overwhelming.

Photo provided by Parc Modern, Victoria

Don’t underestimate the effectiveness of a great rug in contrasting tones and colours. Not only does a floor covering add new life to a space, but an area rug can add warmth to hardwood, tile and laminate floors; perfect for fall and winter! Search for shag rugs and throws in this season’s hottest colours; deep red, rich burnt orange and comforting chocolate brown, to transform the theme in an instant. Take the colour theme one step further by adding cushions in different sizes, colours and textures to the sofa, occasional chair or bed.

FALL 2011

The easiest way to make a dramatic change to a space, for very little money, is to add or replace home accents and accessories. For fall 2011, look for items that are in keeping with the trending industrial theme. Add interior décor items that are metallic or bronze in colour; perhaps distressed or antiqued for an authentic look that adds an element of aesthetic intrigue. Search your attic or shed for vintage items like old telephones, fans, clocks, wine barrels, china, sewing machines, typewriters or suitcases. Introduce them to any room as accent pieces or put them to good use. For example, try using old suitcases and wine barrels as end tables or coffee tables. You will be amazed at how quickly and effectively these items will transform your space. Check out garage sales, used furniture websites, eBay, local consignment and antique stores. You will be pleasantly surprised how vintage items create an effortlessly chic feel to any room.

This fall, FUNCTION meets GLAMOUR!

70

If it is finally time to say farewell to your old furniture and bring in some new pieces, think contemporary, modern and multipurpose. Because many of us on Vancouver Island live in condos, townhomes or houses with space restrictions, multifunctional furniture has become a common trend and is practical yet chic. Look for home design elements that combine contrasting materials and fabrics; pairing leather with stainless steel, for example, creates a modern yet rustic feel that adds warmth to contemporary design. Try metallics, fun prints and bright colours when purchasing in statement pieces. Sectional sofas are still on trend for 2011; offering great style in square foot challenged rooms as they provide ample seating but take up little floor space. Many sectionals come with an ottoman, which doubles nicely as a unique cocktail table; great for entertaining on the fly or kicking your feet up on! When shopping for furniture this fall, consider looking for items that are fashionable yet practical.

Fun and function, this is what CANDY is all about – modern furniture that easily adapts to any room setting with numerous configuration possibilities. Backs rotate at any desired angle so you can watch TV; remove backs and arms to create a comfortable guest bed. Photo provided by Scan Designs.

If the time has come to say goodbye to old and outdated furniture, think contemporary, modern and multipurpose with newly introduced pieces

Tip: Consider fold down beds in order to create a multi-purpose room. Photo provided by Resource Furniture, Victoria

This season, it is all about the art of being organized! If you don’t mind getting dirty, roll up your sleeves and paint a wall or two in a focal colour or try your hand at hanging a geometric or bold floral wallpaper. Take it one step further and add wallpaper to furniture, such as the backdrop of a bookcase or china cabinet, for an elevated pop of decorator panache.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

A great way to recreate any room is to de-clutter and organize. With the help of closet and storage solution companies, you too can have a celebrity closet. Invest in a built-in closet solution solves storage woes and is cheaper than a major renovation. Consider storage units that hide televisions, books, household items or even store fold down beds in order to create a multi-purpose room. Don’t forget to include your kitchen in the reorganization. Store items in practical units and make your life a little easier. Look for a floating kitchen island that double as a functional yet attractive prep and storage station.

72

Tip: Store items in practical units and make your life a little easier.

Maximizing storage for Fall 2011 will be one of the many trends. Create functional storage space between cabinets with practical narrow pull-outs. This is the most stable system on the market. Fun-ctional storage ideas

1. Stainless steel appliances and housewares add a touch of modern to rustic spaces. Old metal pots and stainless vessels filled with utensils, pencils or even flowers is simply charming!

2. Glass jars are great for creating a warm vintage feel. They can be found at most second hand stores and garage sales. Fill with scotch mints or vintage buttons; or ear swabs and cotton balls in the bathroom.

3. Repurpose vintage and unused china as decorator accessories! Dinnerware looks great stacked in cupboards. Mix and match patterns for a kitschy vibe or go with all white for a crisp, modern flair.

4. Baskets can be used anywhere; in the bathroom filled with rolled up towels or soaps; on a kitchen counter filled with fruit, or at the front door to neatly store dog leashes.

The Allure of Gardening on Vancouver Island …Nothing ‘Garden Variety’ Here HLMAGAZINE.COM

In Arthurian legend, Avalon was a magical Isle of the Fortunate. Medieval scribe Geoffrey of Monmouth described it as a place where ‘ the ground of its own accord produces everything instead of merely grass, and people live there a hundred years or more.’

Garden Splendour |

Sound familiar? Vancouver Island is a modern day Avalon, where gardeners can grow peaches and palm trees, rhododendrons and roses, eggplants and melons. Unlike most Canadians, residents of BC’s own Isle of the Fortunate don’t dread fall and winter. Instead, gardening clogs stay at the ready, pansy faces smile in November and hellebores bloom in January. The joy of creating year round botanical beauty in an evergreen world keeps island gardeners healthy, optimistic, and forever young, even if they don’t all live to be a hundred!

Vancouver Island gardeners love to push botanical boundaries. They’re sophisticated plantaholics who troll garden centres for strange, unusual, and spectacular plants

HLMAGAZINE.COM

In fact, Vancouver Island gardens just aren’t ‘garden variety’ spaces. They’re four season outdoor rooms decorated with plants, sculpture, art, furniture, water features, stone and wood structures, lights, and fireplaces. Thank the weather gods for the resulting year-round garden magic. A climate growing zone rating of 8 makes us Canada’s Hawaii. Temperatures average 24 degrees in summer, and rarely dip below 0 in winter, while an ocean that’s 10°C all year warms the island in the winter, and cools it in the summer.

78

Jane Tice, Retail Director of the Gardens at the Horticulture Centre of the Pacific, says a modified Mediterranean climate is key to the uniqueness of Vancouver Island gardens. “We can grow things that can’t be grown in the rest of Canada because it’s too cold,” says Tice.” But we can also grow things that can’t be grown in the southern U.S. because it’s too hot.” No wonder Victoria is known as the City of Gardens, and there are enough fantastic destination gardens, like Butchart Gardens, Hatley Park

National Historic Site, and Kitty Colman Woodland Gardens, to inspire a tourist friendly island garden trail (vancouverislandgardentrail.com). But island gardening isn’t all cake. “Many plants love our hot dry summers, but they’re not so crazy about the wet winters,” says Tice. Bianca Bodley, Manager of the Landscape Division of Landeca, Integrated Property Services, which provides hard and soft scaping from a team of designers, horticultural specialists and arborists, says Vancouver Island is also famous for unique microclimates. “One property may be like a little oven, while just across the street it’s cooler and the same plants can’t be grown successfully,” she says. Oceanside properties face special challenges, like windy conditions. As well, the joy of four season gardening is balanced by the struggle to keep the garden looking great for the whole year.

“You need to think about plants that will look good 365 days a year,” says Tice. “ Rhodos, for instance, are spectacular for a month, then they’re big green blobs, so you need to understory them.” Vancouver Island’s unique topography can also present challenges. Unlike the prairies, we’ve got thin topsoil and plenty of bedrock. But Bodley says, “If a garden has a lot of bedrock, that enables us to use it as a feature, and may encourage built structures, planting pockets and xeriscaping.” No question, Vancouver Island gardeners love to push botanical boundaries. They’re sophisticated plantaholics who troll garden centres for strange, unusual, and spectacular plants.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

“What people really want”, says Bodley, “is a look and a feel in their gardens. We start working with concepts, get a big picture, and narrow it down to a plant palette.”

Gardening here is all about embracing what’s new and wonderful in the plant world

So although it’s easy to name some of Vancouver Island’s most popular plants like rhododendrons, hydrangeas, clematis, roses, hostas, peonies, sedums, hellebores, viburnums, pieris, skimmia, irises, tulips, geraniums and dahlias, gardening here is all about embracing what’s new and wonderful in the plant world. Bodley says succulents used to create living walls, and rain gardens and bio swales which pair thirsty plants with water coming off roofs are trending. Pan Asian themes incorporated with west coast themes are ever popular.

Garden Splendour |

Treat marginals as “garden chocolates”delicious, but fleeting pleasures

For this fall, Tice suggests plants with interesting bark, like the paperbark maple (acer grissum), or for colour, the Flame Dogwoods and Kramer’s red heather. “Many ornamental grasses can take us through the fall,” adds Tice. Oakleaf hydrangeas turn bronze, witch hazel glows scarlet, and garden mums and asters provide soft yellow, pink and purple accents in the fall garden. Then there are those boundary pushing plants like bananas and phormiums, proof of Vancouver Island garden power to the prairie relatives, but not great at coping with cool weather. According to Tice and Bodley, these marginal plants are on their way “out”, while native plants are definitely ‘in’. Tice says you should treat marginals as “garden chocolates”delicious, but fleeting, pleasures. It’s definitely okay to savour the feeling of Canadian green thumb superiority they engender, the essence of gardening magic here on Vancouver Island.

In Case of Illness, Protect Your Way of Life Critical Illness Insurance for Survivors of Serious Illness By Ben Vorst

Insurance is a funny thing: Most of us purchase it hoping never to have to cash in on it. Accidents, car theft, and home disasters are things we would rather live our whole lives without encountering. Even life insurance, a bet hedged against the surest of eventualities, is often paid for with a quick click or signature and a rapid mental move on to happier subjects.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

With advances in medical technology, however, a newer eventuality is coming to the fore: critical illness. Every year, thousands of Canadians are stricken with debilitating illnesses from which they survive, only to find that their way of life is radically altered and that their family will now have to bear an onerous burden of care.

82

As we work later and later into life, this can mean a substantial shift in lifestyle, not to mention a significant loss of income. Specialized rehabilitation, home modifications, and time off for recuperation are all costly expenses; the same awareness that pushes us to provide for our families after we’re gone is also a motivation to

Even after illness recovery, your way of life and financial fitness can be radically altered

ensure that the transition to an illness-affected life will be easier on those around us. Luckily, help is at hand: increasing numbers of insurance providers are offering coverage for a host of common, serious afflictions. Although the list varies, most plans insure against the most daunting debilitations including: Alzheimer’s disease; Severe heart attack; Severe stroke; Parkinson’s disease; Multiple sclerosis; Deafness; Paralysis; Serious cancers; Heart surgeries; and many more common, but often potentially devastating, diseases.

Illness survivors can create a plan for recovery that suits them best Unlike disability benefits, critical illness insurance is usually paid out in a lump sum,

and can be used for any purpose. This allows illness survivors to create a plan for recovery, and a post-disease vision of life, that suits them best. As with life insurance, plans are dependent on present health, lifestyle, and family history; benefits are paid out on diagnosis and survival. There is an age limit, though: most insurers will take clients ranging up towards 60 or 65. Although all of us are sure that, eventually, our time will come, it can be a difficult topic to discuss with loved ones. That’s why we tend to purchase life insurance quietly and without fanfare. Despite this certainty, many of us think that we will go to our final reward smoothly, untouched by the myriad diseases that we hear about so often – and we may be doing it at our family’s expense.

Tony’s Take on Retirement… Or Not! By Tony Parsons

HLMAGAZINE.COM

...and then I shook my head!

84

Like so many of us, I began thinking about retirement long before it was on my horizon. I had a vision of long vacations with my wife Tammy, golf every day with fellow retirees; a life with no deadlines, time to read, or write, or just to loaf. I even thought I was looking forward to mowing a lawn, weeding flowerbeds, and growing fat, delicious, deep-red tomatoes that people would rave about. As they say, it seemed like a good idea at the time, but the closer I got to what I imagined to be my biggest reward for years of labour in the broadcast industry, the vision lost focus and simply faded away.

Who could golf every day? I`m not a fan of travel anymore. I know it`s necessary, but long waits and standing shoeless at a security checkpoint is not my idea of the ideal start to a journey across the border or over to Europe. I may look patient as I stand there but, deep down, I`m longing to turn tail, charge down the concourse and go home as quickly as I can. Who wants to mow the lawn anymore? Professional landscapers do that and they`re pretty good at telling the difference between a flower and a pesky weed. As for those tomatoes, I can buy all I can eat. Especially those “heritage” varieties

that I love so much; the ones you find on roadside stands up and down this lovely island. Furthermore, loafing is not my style. When all else is done, I hook up the vacuum cleaner and have a go with that. I make my living reading, in a way, and I couldn`t fill a whole lot of hours in front of my computer screen. I`ve written my autobiography and this column only appears in Homes & Living magazine four times a year.

What you`ve just read is the answer to the question I hear so often these days... when are you going to retire? Never say never! However, when you`re presented with the opportunity to carry on doing what you`ve always done, and collect a pay cheque to boot, try and convince me you`ll down tools and walk away - for good. You won`t be able to… Enjoying this sneak peek of Tony’s Take? Read the full article online at HLMagazine.com

The Temporal Mandibular Joint TMJ is a common dental problem By Dr. Heather Chisholm

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Many adults that I see in my dental practice suffer from some sort of chronic facial pain that is caused from the Tempomandibular Joint or TMJ. The TMJ is one of the most complicated joints in our bodies. The two TMJs work together to not only open and close the mouth like a hinge, but to move side to side in a rotating motion that is required to chew and speak. Several muscles control the lower jaw or mandible enabling it to move forward, backward and side to side. Each joint also has a disk between the mandible and the temporal bone of the skull. The disk cushions the load while enabling the jaw to open widely and rotate. Any damage that prevents this complex system of muscles, ligaments, disks and bones from working properly may result in painful TMJ disorder. As we use our jaws for such basic things as eating and talking, a TMJ disorder can be very troubling for some people.

88

Your dentist can help to identify the source of the pain with a thorough examination. The joint will be checked for muscle tenderness, as well as clicking, popping, deviations and limited opening. Your dentist may take moulds of your

teeth to examine how the upper and lower teeth work together. Some TMJ problems are caused from injury to the joint or arthritis in the joint. However, the most common cause of TMJ problems are clenching or grinding of the teeth. This is called bruxism and I see it every day in my practise. People tend to clench their teeth at times of stress but not necessarily. I find myself clenching my teeth at the gym and even at yoga when I am holding an uncomfortable pose. Clenching causes the muscles of the TMJ to become stiff and sore. This affects the way the joint can function and not only causes muscle pain but joint pain as well. Grinding is generally done at night, so it is completely unconscious. Often a bed partner will complain of the terrible grinding noise that their mate generates with their teeth. It can be really loud!!! Waking up in the morning with a sore jaw or a headache is a good sign that you may be grinding your teeth in your sleep. Grinding your teeth not only damages your jaw joint, but it can cause damage and excessive wear to your teeth.

There are treatments for pain caused from the TMJ. The clencher needs to be aware that they are clenching so they can consciously stop and relax their muscles. Stress reducing activities may help if stress is the cause. Grinding at night is a little harder to deal with because it is completely unconscious. Sometimes grinding is caused by your teeth not meshing together properly. In this case, the dentist may correct your bite by grinding down or building up some of your teeth; sometimes orthodontics is necessary. Your dentist may suggest a bruxing guard or splint. This is an appliance that you wear that helps protect the teeth, muscles and the jaw from the pressure of clenching and grinding. If you have problems with your TMJ, some simple remedies can really help. Apply heat or ice to sore muscles, avoid chewing gum and eating foods that are hard. Learn some stretching exercises that can help restore a normal balance to the muscles and joints. Relax and think beautiful thoughts. Have a great fall season! - Dr. Heather Chisholm

Fat Burning Cardio for the Rest of Us Real Life Metabolism Boosting Exercises Anyone Can Do By Kyle Kolkman Haven’t we all been on a piece of exercise equipment at home or at the local gym and thinking… now what? Most people, even those who frequent a fitness centre on a regular basis are perplexed at the connection between the fat burn and target heart rate readings on the chart or digital readings in front of us.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

What does it take to speed up fat burning and shed extra pounds?

92

Our bodies use different nutrients as fuel. The two main sources of fuel are carbohydrates and fat. Aerobic training is the key to transforming our sedentary fat storing bodies to efficient fat burning bodies. By definition, aerobic means ‘requiring oxygen’. Simply put, this means we

can use fat as a fuel when oxygen is available. Our bodies burn a lot of fat during long periods of mild to moderate aerobic activities that keep us within 55 to 70% of our target heart rate for 30 minutes or more. In this case, longer is better!

fancy equipment. The key factor to keep in mind is the more muscle groups you use, the more fat you’ll burn, provided you keep within the target heart rate zone. Try the Talk Test

Muscle is the body’s most metabolically active tissue, burning between 22 and 36 calories per pound each day. The key to fat burning (and boosting heart health) is to be active for at least 30 minutes a day, most days of the week. Fat burning exercises include walking, jogging, running, elliptical exercise trainer workouts, cycling and swimming. These are exercises that the average person can do at home, at work or at the gym; there is no need for

You always want to keep yourself in your target heart rate zone to maximize the benefit of your efforts. So, what do you do when you are exercising, hiking or walking the dog and you don’t have a heart rate monitor? Try the talk test. If you can carry on a conversation or sing a verse of a favourite song without a little heavy breathing, you are not working hard enough. And if you can’t talk or sing because you’re short of breath, you’ve probably left the target zone.

HEALTH & WELLNESS |

Did you know? Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer in North America! why do cardio? Do you really need to do cardio if you only want to burn fat? Aerobically fit people burn more fat than those who are not as fit. Put simply, cardio training increases the efficiency of the cardio-respiratory system by strengthening the heart and the lungs. This allows a greater flow of oxygen to the body and speeds up fat burning. So get moving! Get on your roller blades, run with the dog once a few times a week, or go for a light jog. This type of activity will help you shed a few more of those unwanted pounds and result in a healthier, happier you.

Aerobic means ‘requiring oxygen’
