Celebrating 10 Years Welcome to the 10th edition of IDSwest —Interior Design Show West! This year we are honoured to be a part of the inaugural Vancouver Design Week, a long awaited cross-discipline platform that brings together the many diverse elements of Vancouver’s design community. Over the last 10 years we’ve had the unique opportunity to see how the people of Vancouver have embraced and celebrated the importance of design in their daily lives. We hope that you will use your time at IDSwest to connect with an idea or a product that you can take home and share. IDSwest is not just about items for your home, it’s also about the incredible designers, makers, and speakers who inspire. All of our feature exhibits are designed to galvanize, to conjure up ideas, to inspire collaborations, to create connections and to stimulate conversation. It is Vancouver’s annual opportunity to rub shoulders with a long list of world-class designers that call Vancouver home and many more that now call on Vancouver for inspiration. Our mandate is to bring great design to the masses and each year we strive to fill the weekend with an eclectic mix of brilliant local designers complemented by products you can’t find anywhere else. This year we have expanded our reach to showcase inspiring design from Amsterdam, London, New York, Italy, Montreal, Toronto, Portland, San Francisco, Nevada, Los Angeles and beyond. Michael Anastassiades launched his studio in 1994 to explore contemporary notions of culture and aesthetics through product, furniture and environmental design. Positioned between fine art and design, his work aims to provoke dialogue, participation and interaction. He creates objects that are minimal, utilitarian and almost mundane yet full of vitality. Anastassiades' work is featured in permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the V&A Museum and Crafts Council, London and MAK, Vienna.

This breakout session will provide a preview into the research creation ongoing within the city, presenting some of the cutting-edge technology for product design being developed right here in Vancouver.

During a one-hour presentation, Corey Klassen will identify the key points to consider in designing bathrooms for the luxury market. The course will provide an understanding of the spa and luxury experiences of today’s bathrooms. Designing with technology in the bathroom—whether it’s lighting, sound, or home automation—has its design challenges and we will look at solutions to better integrate new multi-media in the bathroom. We will take a brief look at how space planning and building code considerations need not be a challenge in beautiful spaces while reviewing user engagement of “bathers” in the bathroom. Lastly, we will conclude with a gallery of some award-wining luxury bathrooms.

Do you make and sell products to a loyal following online or at craft shows but want to see your work on the shelves of your favourite boutique? It takes more than having great products to earn a retailer’s interest, trust and money. Learn how to approach stores and make it easy for them to buy from you. During this workshop you’ll re-evaluate your business through the eyes of a buyer; learn how to research the right stores to approach and how to edit your line for maximum appeal. We’ll also look at the content of your line sheet and catalogue, discuss what makes a compelling pitch, how buyers find out about new lines, and talk about the importance of establishing a good relationship with your stores.

Bertjan Pot is a Dutch designer, perhaps best known for his Random Light (1999). Studio Bertjan Pot works with manufacturers such as Arco, Established & Sons, Feld, Gelderland, Montis, Moooi and Richard Lampert to create interior products showing a fascination for techniques, structures, patterns and colors.
