Just like you choose the best detergent for your clothes, you must ensure to take good care of the washing machine too. If there’s musty smell in your clothes even after washing, it’s an indication for you to clean your washing machine. Whether you have a front load washing machine, fully automatic washing machine or a top load washing machine, give it a thorough clean up from time to time. Usually, one should clean the washing machine once every month. Cleaning the machine is not a difficult task. Here are some steps that you can follow: 1. Run a wash cycle The first step is to run the wash cycle without putting any clothes in the drum. Make sure to use a hot wash cycle, as it will help get rid of detergent remnants in the drum. Pro tip: Use a liquid detergent, as it dissolves easily and leaves no residue.

2. Add vinegar Vinegar is one of the best natural cleaning agents. Mix half a cup of vinegar with water and spray it on the inside walls of the drum using a spray bottle. While doing this, keep the lid of the top load washing machine, front load washing machine or your fully automatic washing machine open and let the solution sit for an hour. 3. Clean the detergent tray and lint filter In most of the washing machines, water flows only through the centre and does not reach the sides of the tray. This leads to detergent buildup, causing an unpleasant odour. Therefore, wash the tray using liquid soap and hot water. The lint filter is a small mesh present on the inside wall of the drum. Its function is to catch the lint that comes out of clothes. To clean it, just soak the filter in some diluted liquid soap and brush the sides using an old toothbrush. Now, give it a good rinse using clean water.

4. Wipe the washing machine Wipe both inside and outside area of the washing machine using a micro-fibre cloth. Be it a top load washing machine or a front load washing machine; make sure you clean the lids properly. You can use a brush to remove dirt that gets stuck in the corners. Don’t miss out on the settings panels; wipe it with the damp cloth.

5. Clean the drain pipe Over time, the drain pipe gets clogged with lint and dirt. The easiest way to unclog is to use warm water and baking soda. Simply fill a bucket with warm water and add a pack of baking soda to it. Remove the pipe from the machine and pour the solution into the pipe. You can also dissolve the blockage with a drain cleaner or seek professional help. These were some of the steps in which you can keep your washing machine spick and span. Make sure to do this once a month to keep your washing machine running smoothly.
