What does the Wattage in a Microwave mean?

In general, wattage denotes power used by the microwave to cook food and the performance of an appliance depends on it. Whether you’re using a microwave oven for baking or a microwave oven with grill, wattage plays an important role. It is just as important as knowing the oven temperature when you are baking. Once you know your microwave's output wattage, you'll be able to find out appropriate cooking times for your particular microwave. The output wattage of microwave ovens varies considerably from model to model, but larger ovens are typically more powerful than smaller ones. The average wattage of a microwave is 700 to 1200 watts. The major problem everyone faces is that they are not aware of their microwave wattage. They either end up spending time in long cooking sessions or wasting extra energy. The microwave wattage can be measured by the cooking time. You can estimate the unit's power output by conducting a simple water boil test. It takes two minutes to boil a mug of water in a 700-watt oven. Whereas in a 1200-watt oven, it will take 45-50 seconds! The faster the water boils, the higher your microwave oven's wattage. In a microwave, the wattage number is shown inside of the door or you can easily find it on the owner’s manual. While purchasing a solo microwave oven online, the wattage has to be kept in mind. The ideal wattage depends on the purpose and usage of an individual. Though, if your microwave oven has a higher wattage, it will cook your food more evenly and at a faster pace too. Calculating the right power consumption can help you save on the electricity bills.

Microwaves are between 700 – 1200 watts, and a 1000-watt microwave will cook efficiently and more evenly. Microwaves with 700 watts or less are slower and may not cook food evenly. Hence 1000 or 1200 watts are the best option for most people’s needs. Generally, microwave oven with grill will need a higher wattage than a solo microwave oven. And if you’re going for a microwave oven for baking, you may require a microwave with even higher wattage. Power consumption and cost of the microwave oven also increases as per the wattage. If you go for higher wattage microwaves, they may be good as a microwave oven with grill or microwave oven for baking, though it can be heavy for your pocket. Hence, a 1000-watt microwave should be ideal in respect to quality of an appliance at a reasonable price point. For baking, solo microwave oven and microwave oven with grill cannot be used as the size of the baking tray or baking tin gets limited due to rotation of the glass tray inside the chamber. Another disadvantage of a microwave oven for baking is the limitation of single level baking. Before purchasing a microwave, have a clear idea about the usage and cooking time.
