Like many small wine producers in the Barossa, the Poonawatta brand has been built on the foundation of heritage, history and family. Current custodians of the old centenarian Shiraz vines are Andrew and Michelle Holt, and these wonderful old vines are the core of the Poonawatta brand. While Andrew’s six generation heritage is firmly linked to Eden Valley, Michelle is a fifth-generation Barossa girl. “We have a 160-year history of Eden Valley farming and viticulture, with three generations currently involved in the vineyard” said Andrew. “Mum is in her late 70s and going strong, and still our fastest grape picker. And occasionally our teenage girls can be motivated to lend a hand as well.” The centrepiece of the Poonawatta crown is the original Shiraz vineyard, planted in 1880.

“It is such a privilege to be the custodians of these wonderful old vines. To the best of our knowledge it is the oldest vineyard in the area and with only 912 vines remaining, it is a real living treasure.” The Poonawatta property took its name from the Peramangk Indigenous Australians; Poona meaning ‘good / fertile’ and Watta meaning ‘land / country’ – fitting descriptions for this beautiful part of Eden Valley. Alongside the 1880 vines, a 45-year-old Riesling vineyard and 37-year-old Shiraz vineyard, both planted by Andrew’s parents, complete the ‘estate’ offering. Along with the 1880, both these blocks produce single vineyard wines. “We also purchase fruit from other Eden Valley
