Our students continue to thrive, thanks to our dedicated faculty and staff, leadership from our partners in business and industry, and you, our generous donors. Your support has been pivotal in the Foundation’s ability to create opportunities for students to succeed while meeting the needs of an evolving labour market.
Our donors are as unique as the students they support. This year we have had the pleasure of working with many individuals and organizations with a long-standing history of investing in Holland College. We have also welcomed new donors, who chose to help us shape a vibrant and promising future for our students. With your support, the Foundation remained steadfast in its commitment to supporting the needs of students. From monetary gifts to gifts-in-kind that include training aids, equipment, machinery, and technology, you have helped us ensure that our classrooms and labs replicate real-world environments and our students are ready for the

bursaries, awards, and emergency aid portfolio continues to grow, helping an increasing number of students navigate unforeseen financial challenges and remain focused on their education. We also formally launched our planned giving program this year, giving donors the opportunity to leave a legacy in our community through their estate planning. In October, Holland College and the Holland College Foundation celebrated the launch of Thrive, a $2.5 million fundraising campaign to support the establishment of a visible and accessible centre for student wellness, resilience, and success. In this report we are pleased to share with you the details of this critical initiative, the anticipated outcomes and impacts, and our milestones to date. Together, we are working towards a future with vision and purpose for our students. MESSAGE FROM HOLLAND COLLEGE PRESIDENT In addition to our core post-secondary work, Holland College first opened its doors in the fall of 1969 with 82 students enrolled in four programs. Today, we educate and train approximately 8,000 students per year, including more than 2,500 who are enrolled full-time in one of our 65+ postsecondary programs. The work of the Holland College Foundation and the generosity of our donor community has benefited countless students this past year. I extend my sincerest gratitude to each of you.
Holland College is providing industry-focused, workforce training for domestic students who need reskilling or upskilling and bridging-programming for foreign accreditation for newcomers to our province, to equip them with the skills they need to join the Canadian workforce. We have over 130 degree pathways in place with partner universities worldwide, providing our graduates with credit towards a degree.
The Holland College student body is vibrant and diverse. Fifty per cent of our students are from Prince Edward Island, and 64 per cent call Atlantic Canada home. Five per cent are from other regions in Canada, and 31 per cent are international students. The average age of our first-year students is 24, and 17 per cent of our students are aged 30 or older, many of whom are seeking to re-enter the labour market after a time of absence. Several of our students are the first in their family to attend college, and more than a few also hold full-time jobs. They are parents, grandparents, athletes, musicians, recent university graduates and they comprise a body of learners whose educational expectations, learning styles, life experiences, and individual goals add vibrancy to our campuses.
We know that more is needed when it comes to health and wellness on our campuses. In a commitment to ensure our students build resilience and live healthy lives while attending Holland College we are establishing a centre for student wellness, resilience, and success, to provide the enhanced supports they need in a collaborative and inclusive environment. As you read this report, you will learn about Thrive, a special $2.5 million fundraising initiative being led by the Holland College Foundation, to support this vital initiative.
Thanks to the support of our partners in business and industry, our provincial government, and our generous community, we continue to ensure that our students have every opportunity to reach their full potential. We have also continued to train the workforce to meet the changing needs of the labour market here in our province, throughout the region, and across our country. Your generosity has allowed us to continue to remove the financial barriers students face and provide them with the inspiration and confidence to pursue their dreams.

A LASTING LEGACY In 2022, the family of Chef Linda Hellingman established a memorial
endowment with the Holland College Foundation. The endowment funds the Chef Linda Hellingman Bursary at The Culinary Institute of Canada (CIC) and was established through a $100,000 estate gift, in addition to memorial donations made by Linda’s family, friends, and colleagues. At the time of her passing in 2021, Chef Linda was a much-loved instructor at The CIC. Linda’s sister, Tricia Hellingman, said the bursary was established by the family as a testament to Linda’s deep commitment to - and support of students who demonstrate an enthusiasm for culinary arts.
“Linda loved her students, her fellow colleagues, and her work at the college. She not only shared her knowledge of culinary arts, but also generously provided encouragement and help to her students over nearly 25 years as a Chef Instructor at The CIC. Dylan Barnes from East Hants, Nova Scotia, a first-year student in the Culinary Arts program, was the
inaugural recipient of the Chef Linda Hellingman Bursary. Dylan is grateful for the incredible opportunity it has provided, as becoming a chef has been his biggest dream since the age of seven.

PLANNING FOR TOMORROW There are many ways to leave a legacy, and adding
a philanthropic component to an estate plan can result in significant tax savings while leaving a lasting impact in the community. A planned gift in your will can include cash, securities, retirement funds, real estate, life insurance, or other property and, when made to the Holland College Foundation, helps current and future students achieve their full potential. Many opportunities available to Holland College students are created and sustained by such gifts, and there are many ways to give.

OPENING DOORS FOR FUTURE STUDENTS In 2023, the Holland College Foundation commissioned local artist and Foundation staff member, Gloria Wooldridge, to capture the historical entrance to Holland College and its predecessor, Prince of Wales College. A framed 8”x10” canvas print of this watercolour painting will be given with gratitude to donors who leave a legacy by making a planned gift to the Holland College Foundation. This work of art, titled Opening Doors, celebrates the impact that donors make on the lives and journeys of our students.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT – DON AND SHERYL LIVINGSTONE Don Livingstone CM, and his wife Sheryl married
in 1985 and together faithfully supported Holland College and greatly impacted the lives of its students for almost 40 years. They made gifts to numerous projects and initiatives that revitalized the College’s campuses and centres, and Don also gave generously of his time by chairing both the Holland College Foundation Board of Directors and the College’s Board of Governors. In addition to their contributions to the college, Don was deeply rooted in his commitment to giving back to the community, participating in countless organizations in a volunteer capacity that enriched our province as a whole. One organization that held a particularly special place in his heart was Scouts Canada, a volunteer journey Don began in 1942 until his health declined in 2022. During this time Don worked to help innumerable youth acquire the skills they needed to better their lives and was awarded scouting’s highest honour – the Silver Wolf.
Don’s working career of 43 years was with the Island Telephone Co. Ltd. He loved the company and its people and retired as President and Chief Executive Officer. For his lifelong contribution, he was awarded the Order of Canada in 1990. Sadly, Don passed in 2022 at the age of 88, leaving three sons, eight grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren to carry on his tradition of service. In celebration of their shared appreciation for the importance of education, Don and Sheryl established the Don and Sheryl Livingstone Entrance Bursaries in 2017 for students entering a post-secondary program. Now, not only do these bursaries keep Don’s memory alive at Holland College, but they also continue a legacy of giving back to the community. Don truly exceeded his goal of leaving the world a better place.

Slomin Jacob, a first-year student in the Automotive Technology program, was a recipient of a Don and Sheryl Livingstone Entrance Bursary in the 2022/23 academic year. Slomin describes receiving this bursary as a profound blessing in his life.

INVESTING IN PERFORMING ARTS EDUCATION Thanks to a generous $95,000 gift from the
R. Howard Webster Foundation, performing arts students at Holland College will have the opportunity to participate in specialized mentorship programs that will launch in 2024, providing students an opportunity to enrich their skill sets in aspects of the industry that they have a particular interest in. The gift will also fund new technology for use by students and the community in the Florence Simmons Performance Hall.
Campbell Webster, a board member for the R. Howard Webster Foundation and a champion for the arts and education in Atlantic Canada, believes that the live musical and performing arts are everywhere in the region and sees Holland College’s School of Performing Arts as an important contributor to the industry’s continued success and growth.

With this gift, six to eight Music Performance students per year will benefit through industry mentorship in one of two unique streams: the sound, lighting, and technical aspects of production, or the business and promotion aspect of the performing arts.

LAUNCH OF $2.5 MILLION THRIVE CAMPAIGN Holland College is committed to ensuring students thrive
academically while building the capacity and skills they need to lead healthy, empowered, and productive lives. In October, Holland College and the Holland College Foundation celebrated the public launch of Thrive, a campaign to support the establishment of a visible and accessible centre for student wellness, resilience, and success. A renovation and expansion is underway on a 4.300 sq.ft. building at the Prince of Wales Campus in Charlottetown. Renovations and construction began in April of 2023, and the centre, which will double the size of the building, will be open and operational for students in September of 2024. A broad, integrated suite of services will be offered through the centre. These include mental health supports, a health clinic, academic support services, and career and academic counselling. Lifelong determinants of health such as sleep, diet, exercise, and social interaction will also be incorporated. Through technology and satellite offerings, all students across the province will have access to all resources, regardless of the campus they are attending. A slate of entrance awards will be established for students who have diagnosed learning disabilities and/or mental health issues. The expected impact of this critical initiative is a reduction in student attrition and a bolstering of resiliency and coping skills that will benefit students throughout their lives. Ultimately our goal is to ensure that our students finish strong, make a successful transition into the workforce, and contribute to the overall health and prosperity of our communities.

n September 21st, 2023, Holland College, the Holland College Foundation, and Holland Hurricanes Athletics hosted the 23rd Annual Holland College Golf Classic, presented by Cox & Palmer and RBC. Organized in collaboration with returning Honorary Co-Chairs Quentin Bevan, Jennifer Evans, and Ron Keefe, the tournament hosted 38 teams, and approximately $79,000 was raised to support student entrance awards. We are grateful to our sponsors, staff and students, as well as all who participated, contributed, or volunteered to ensure another successful event.
