reetings! Cindy and I are looking forward to some cooler weather but I think we may have to look forward for a bit longer. In this month’s letter I’d like to share with you our experiences attending two events this past month. The first was a dharma talk by Zen Master Thich Dieu Thien. She has to be one of the calmest and genuinely happy people I have ever met. Unlike most dharma talks which are basically lectures on some aspect of Buddhist doctrine or practice, this was really a series of questions and object lessons. Zen Master began by saying “Good morning.” (It was night.) and then asking us what we thought when she said good morning. The dharma talk continued in true Socratic style with questions rather than just explanations. To illustrate what is meant by Awake Mind and how we could experience being Clear Water, she stirred three glass containers of water, two of which contained dirt and flower petals. The talk concluded with about 30 minutes of questions from the audience. It was very enlightening. I have never see anyone who taught quite like this before. The second was Yoga Mass at Grace Episcopal Church. It began like any other Mass with prayer, gospel and epistle readings, and responsive readings except that we were all seated on yoga mats on the floor. Rev. Gena Davis then lead us in 30 minutes of slow flow yoga. Yoga was followed by Service of the Table as Rev. Davis and Rev. John Graham blessed and distributed the communion elements of bread and wine. The service ended with Rev. Graham leading us in a guided meditation on the universe and our places in it. You can experience both Yoga Mass and Zen Master Thich Deiu Thien’s teaching this month. Check out the articles in this month and the calendar listings for details. But that’s not all! There are many other spiritual events in the month of September and you can find out about them in this month’s issue. Blessed be,

Mike & Cindy Hart

ADOPTION AGENCY EXPANDS ACROSS TEXAS, LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN FOR BIRTH MOTHERS

N

ew locations increase reach and ability to assist birth mothers and adoptive families across the state Austin-based nonprofit agency Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services (PCHAS) today announced the expansion of its adoption services to new locations in Texas including Austin, Dallas and Wichita Falls to coincide with the launch of an educational awareness campaign focused on birth mothers. This is the first time in decades that the agency has chosen to serve birth parents and adoptive families in these cities. “This is an exciting time for us. We will continue to serve those in need across the state as we increase awareness of PCHAS’ adoption services to the ones who need it most—children, birth parents, single parents and adoptive families,” says PCHAS president Ed Knight. “We will be paying special attention to birth mothers as we expand to larger markets in Texas. We want birth mothers who are going through a very emotional time to know there is somewhere they can turn for emotional support and guidance.” For the past six years, PCHAS Adoption Program was coordinated out of its Houston office. Now, by offering additional adoption services in Austin, Dallas and Wichita Falls, PCHAS will focus its efforts on a larger population of birth parents and adoptive families on a local level with personal attention to those in need. This will allow the Houston campus to focus even more on the needs of Houston families. esidents of northwest Houston, Copperfield, Bear Creek, Cypress, and Katy area can now take advantage of the services of Maria Badell, L.Ac. at Intuitive Acupuncture and Wellness. She has been a licensed acupuncturist for the past five years having earned her Bachelors of Science in Nutritional Science from Texas A&M in 2005, and Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from American College of Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (ACAOM) in 2010. She is also a National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM) Diplomate certified in Oriental Medicine. Her main fields of study have been for women’s health, fertility, pain management and general wellness. Maria says, “Why try acupuncture is a little more personal. Maybe you have tried everything and nothing has changed your situation. Maybe you are tired of being in pain. Maybe you have not made any breakthroughs with recurring anxiety and depression. Or maybe you really want to go a natural route for balancing hormones and improve fertility. Either way, it can assist many people for many different reasons and I invite you to trust your instinct on why you are thinking about acupuncture. There is no pain involved in receiving acupuncture and one can easily focus on the herbal formulas and request that in place of both acupuncture and herbs.” If you’ve never tried acupuncture before or if you are looking for someone a little closer to where you live, give Maria a call and schedule a consultation today. 346-213-4474. and more information: graceinhouston. org, yogamass.com, and ish-tmc.org. The Reverend Dr. John K. Graham, my partner in YogaMass®, says of the service, “We engage all our senses in the Eucharist. The whole person is body, soul and spirit while the beautiful Eucharist stimulates and touches our heart and our soul in a way. By integrating yoga, we also integrate the body, and that’s a holistic approach to the mass.”

Yoga Mass by The Reverend Gena Davis

T

he yoga revolution in the U.S. has caught on and is changing lives. Yoga offers innumerable health benefits physically, emotionally and psychologically. A yoga practice of asanas or poses with focus on the breath allows for improved physical health and energy flow and brings a calmer state of mind. When on our mats, practitioners can experience increased strength and vitality, and a lighter sense of being. Amazingly, we come off of our mats feeling rejuvenated, happy, and sometimes exhausted! As an Episcopal priest, my spiritual practices are an important part of my daily routine and the way I live. Yoga has been for me a spiritual practice that informs and enriches my Christian faith in powerful ways. Beyond the health benefits, yoga has deepened my experience of God. The Sanskrit root word for yoga is yuj, which means “to join.” Yoga means “unity” or “oneness” and is described as the union of the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness or God. The entire Christian journey is a movement toward God, and as St. Augustine of Hippo said, “You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you.” For many Christians, the experience of God, perhaps most especially in worship, comes from the mind, or intellect. It has been said that the longest journey is from the head to the heart. Yoga helps in this movement to the heart center. I have found this to be

true for many years, and in the summer of 2015, I became a certified Yoga Educator (YTT 200). Out of this journey, YogaMass ® was borne. YogaMass ® is a unique holy communion worship experience engaging mind, body and spirit, reconnecting us to the divine presence among us and within us. We engage our bodies in breathing, yoga flow, and meditation, and together we share in the sacred meal as we seek to be transformed into the mind of Christ. YogaMass® was a vision that came out of my desire to more fully integrate yoga into my own spiritual life and to share it with others for healing and wholeness. YogaMass® is offered monthly by Grace Episcopal Church in partnership with the Institute for Spirituality and Health at the Texas Medical Center. Please visit our websites for upcoming dates

natural awakenings

In addition to YogaMass®, I also offer donation-based yoga classes twice per week at Grace Episcopal Church: Hatha Flow (Tuesdays 5:00-5:50 pm) and Gentle Flow (Saturdays 9:0010:00 am). Please check our website graceinhouston.org for calendar events or call us at (832) 667-8601 as classes are not held on YogaMass® days or as other ministry needs arise. Grace is located at 4040 W. Bellfort (one block west of Stella Link), Houston, 77025. All are welcome. We invite you to join us and experience what Jesus promises, “Behold, the kingdom of God is within you” (Luke 17:21, KJV). The greatest gift we can give ourselves is to discover the presence of God within, and then to share the gift with others for healing and wholeness. We can change the world one heart at a time, and as the beautiful song written by Sy Miller so wisely says, ‘‘Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me.”

VEGAN DIET BENEFITS KIDS’ HEART HEALTH

R

VITAMIN C-RICH PRODUCE GUARDS AGAINST CATARACTS

R

esearch from King’s College, in London, shows that dietary vitamin C reduces the development of cataracts that interfere with vision by obscuring the lens of the eye, keeping light from striking the retina. The researchers followed 324 pairs of female twins for 10 years. Food questionnaires were administered to each pair to determine their intake of dietary nutrients. The researchers also examined each of the twins’ eyes for the development of cataracts. The scientists found those that consumed the most foods with vitamin C had fewer cataracts than those that ate foods with less of the vitamin. These findings did not apply to supplemental vitamin C, helping researchers better understand the superior nature of natural vitamin C. Natural vitamin C contains multiple bioflavonoids, rutin and several cofactors, such as factors J, K and P, tyrosinase and ascorbinogen. Senior study author and eye surgeon Dr. Chris Hammond says, “The findings could have significant impact, particularly for the aging population, by suggesting that simple dietary changes such as increased intake of fruits and vegetables as part of a healthier diet could help protect them from cataracts.”

esearch from the Cleveland Clinic has found that a plant-based diet could be more effective than even the American Heart Association’s recommended five-food-groups diet for reducing childhood heart disease. The research, led by Cleveland Clinic pediatrician Michael Macknin, tested 28 obese children between the ages of 9 and 18 that had high cholesterol levels. For four weeks, 14 of the children ate the American Heart Association diet, while the other half ate a vegan, plant-based diet. Children on the plant-based diet were found to have significantly lower weight, systolic blood pressure and total cholesterol numbers, and improved mid-arm circumference, body mass index and level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. They also had lower levels of insulin and two heart disease markers, myeloperoxidase and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein—all indicating improvements in their cardiovascular health. By comparison, children on the American Heart Association diet saw significantly lower weight, waist circumference, mid-arm circumference and myeloperoxidase levels, indicating enhanced immunity, but did not exhibit the other improvements. “As the number of obese children with [unhealthy] high cholesterol continues to grow, we need to have effective lifestyle modifications to help them reverse their risk factors for heart disease,” says Macknin. “Cardiovascular disease begins in childhood. If we can see such significant improvements in a four-week study, imagine the potential for improving long-term health into adulthood if a whole population of children began to eat these diets regularly.”

globalbriefs Kinesthetic Kids New Desks Aid Learning via Movement

Educators at Charleston County schools, in South Carolina, know that more movement and exercise makes kids better learners, even as the amount of time devoted to physical education (PE) and recess has been declining sharply in the U.S. “If you ask anyone in education if they prefer PE or class instruction, they say instruction every time,” says David Spurlock, coordinator of health, wellness and physical education for the Charleston County school district. “Yet, what we’re trying to show is that more movement equals better grades, behavior and bodies.” Charles Pinckney Elementary School, in Charleston, employs Active Brains, a program that uses 15 stations through which students rotate during the class. Each station has a unique exercise component such as a mini-basketball hoop or an exercise bike, and is focused on a different academic task such as spelling or math flashcards. This is the first classroom in the U.S. equipped with only kinesthetic desks. The program has been in operation for three years and has a waiting list of students excited to try the new approach.

Lying Labels

New Term Disguises High-Fructose Corn Syrup The Corn Refiners Association (CRA) has resorted to creating a new label for high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) by calling it “fructose syrup” or just “fructose” because numerous scientific studies have linked it to obesity, Type 2 diabetes and autism. HFCS is a highly processed chemical sweetener used in many processed foods, including breads, cookies, candy, condiments and soft drinks. It extends the shelf life of products and is often cheaper than sugar, the primary reasons manufacturers use it. Standard HFCS contains from 42 to 55 percent fructose. The new term is being used when foods contain HFCS-90, which has “just” 90 percent fructose. Identifying HFCS-90 as an ingredient bizarrely gives food makers a green light to use statements such as “Contains no high-fructose corn syrup” or “No HFCS” on the product label, thus misleading buyers. Bart Hoebel, a psychology professor at Princeton University, reports, “When rats are drinking high-fructose corn syrup at levels well below those in soda pop, they’re becoming obese; every single one, across the board. Even when rats are fed a high-fat diet, you don’t see this; they don’t all gain extra weight.” Source: NaturalNews.com

Hello Escargot

Pest Control Without Chemicals Indian runner ducks have been used in Asia for thousands of years to control pests. Now they’re being used in a South African vineyard to eat snails that damage the vines. On the Vergenoegd Wine Estate, in Stellenbosch, South Africa, about 1,000 of the well-behaved quackers parade twice a day into a vineyard to rid it of pests, as they have done for at least 30 years. Denzil Matthys, the duck caretaker at Vergenoegd, confirms that the ducks help make the farm sustainable. “We try to keep a pesticide-free farm by using the ducks,” he says. Marlize Jacobs, the farm manager and winemaker, says snails are a big problem at Vergenoegd because of the vineyard’s proximity to the ocean. “After winter, the vineyards bud,” she says. “Those buds are succulent bits of food and snails love to eat them. If we don’t control them, they will absolutely destroy the vineyard.”

A New Yet Ancient Modality for Emotional Healing by Darrell Hicks

M

any years ago Edgar Cayce predicted that sound frequencies would become the medicine of the future. We now know that the emotion of love resonates at 528 Hz and all emotions resonate at different frequency rates. When our emotions are put into fight or flight, it brings imbalance and creates what we call dissonance. As the mind becomes dissonant, the body becomes diseased. Whatever affects the mind affects the body, and whatever affects the body affects the mind. All the organs in the body also have a healthy vibratory rate that is unique. Sound is known to be a carrier wave of consciousness, which means we can use sound to move negative diseased bioplasmic energy out of the body. By using sound and music frequencies as therapy, the body can clear stress, anxiety and even past traumas. The body is a store house as it holds every

emotion that we go through. The body consists of 70 percent water, which makes it the most effective element in our body for sound to travel through. Our bodies were designed to bring natural healing to it as we return to natural awakenings. In the 21st century, natural sound frequencies are used as a therapeutic and emotional tool. There are many instrumental techniques used for sound healing practices. In addition to the voice, overtone singing and chanting, sound healing instruments include crystal bowels, tuning forks, Tibetan bowls, jaw harps, gongs, native flutes, drums, didgeridoo, rattles, harmonium and shruti box. As we consciously breathe during sound healing meditation, we speed up energy vibrations which produce light. Healing sounds also speed up vibrations of the atoms and molecules creating additional light. This light can be described as energized healing energy for the body. Are you wondering if sound healing actually clears stress and supports emotional healing for the mind and the body? This can be explained with the principles of dissonance, resonance and consonance. When we are in a dissonant state of consciousness or vibration, we are out of balance with our natural vibratory state in our body, manifesting as negative emotions, physical pain, or disease. If grief has struck you, your healthy vibratory state of being will be knocked out and your heart will become distressed. Sound healing works by bringing the dissonant state back into resonance, which means return to sound. Returning back to resonance is done by projecting healing sound frequencies with the highest intention back into the energy fields of the body. The sound heals and restores the heart to its natural healthy vibratory frequency. The repetition of practicing sound healing creates a consonant, which allows us to hold this healthy vibratory state in our mind and body for longer and longer periods of time. “When our guests experience a sound healing session with Darrell, their body is able to release stress and heal back to a healthy vibration. The class also helps our guests with their cleansing journey as they release toxins from their body and their soul and mind return to a state of tranquility, said Carrie Harmon, Spa Director at Deer Lake Lodge and Spa. The most powerful healing instrument on the planet is the human voice. Sound healing uses the voice to make powerful healing sounds for releasing mental and emotional stress from the physical body. Think about the calming voice and sound that only a mother can offer to her distressed child. How the rhythm, sound and music soothes the child like modern medicine. Healing sound is medicine for the heart and soul and has been used for many centuries. Music, rhythm and sound are the oldest form of therapy and we all have unique vibratory frequencies. Darrell Hicks is certified sound healer, professional body worker, neuromuscular therapist and advanced Thai yoga massage therapist. Hicks has been a holistic practitioner for over 30 years and facilitates monthly sound garden healing circles at Deer Lake Lodge and Spa, a health resort that promotes enhanced living through holistic cleansing and other therapeutic practices in a relaxing, secluded environment. www.deerlakelodge.com. Growth of Kirtan Yoga in Houston and the World

A

lot of us have experimented with conventional yoga: we’ve sat with eyes closed—in as close to a “lotus position” as our imperfect bodies allow — and we’ve tried breathing techniques or meditated on this or that, patiently (or impatiently) waiting to enter sacred space, to be lifted from our present plane of consciousness to a blissful, nirvanic state. But for many of us, the experience has been like that of a rocket that fails to lift off or doesn’t go very far. The simple but demanding yogic exercises seem to require a discipline that the yogis of old had, but which is not always so easy to muster in ourselves. Fortunately, however, the ancient yoga masters gave us a helpful tip: different spiritual techniques work better in different world ages. By the time our present age started, some 5,000 years ago, according to India’s traditional wisdom texts, the recommended process was Kirtan Yoga, the power of sacred chanting. Beginning with Swami A.C. Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada’s performance of Kirtan Yoga at Tomkins Square Park in New York in the mid1960s, kirtan, the call-and-response form of devotional singing, has been gaining momentum throughout the world. In Houston it began when a charismatic monk, Vishnujana Swami, hitch-hiked

here in 1970, chanted at Hermann Park and performed melodious kirtans on Sundays at the free vegetarian love feasts at the first Hare Krishna center in a dilapidated house on West Gray Street. Now the new Hare Krishna facility is more upscale—a landmark multimillion dollar Vedic style temple on West 34th Street—but every Sunday guests can still have the kirtan experience beginning at 5:30 pm as part of the same love feast program. Yoga studios once known for silent meditation now broadcast tuneful mantras through their loudspeakers, and kirtaneers such as Krishna Das and the Mayapuris frequently visit Houston. And why not? Not everyone has the physical

natural awakenings

stamina to practice more conventional forms of yoga, but even a child can chant. For well-known kirtan singer Jai Uttal, it can be a profound spiritual experience, a connection with the divine through sacred sound. “Kirtan is like a magnet, inviting and begging grace to enter our hearts and our lives. It is a most precious thing, something to be cherished and practiced with total gratitude, and those who learn how to enter into it will feel God’s grace and presence.” According to Steven Rosen, author of The Yoga of Kirtan, “a new kirtan has emerged: Ancient India’s sages have called out to us, and we are answering their call with modern words, rhythms, and beats. Kirtan is a call-and-response form of yoga, and we are responding, too, as the sages knew we would.” To experience kirtan in Houston in an intimate setting, Dharma House offers kirtan and a vegetarian dinner. time for the body to comfortably settle deeply into a pose—as long as 15 minutes—therefore, a 90-minute restorative class may include only a handful of asanas. Lasater says, “Most people don’t need more of anything from the culture in which we live. They need much more to learn to be still and at ease.” In today’s yoga world, which seems to emphasize power and action, “Restorative yoga has become imperative to balance activity and ambition with stillness and being,” she continues. Lasater notes that while many classes are reducing savasana to as little as three minutes, students need 20 minutes. Carey clarifies that because this approach focuses on opening and letting go, rather than striving for the biggest stretch, “Sensation-seeking yogis may need to shift their perspective. The biggest challenge is often quieting the mind while the body is still. When a student is uncomfortable because the mind is screaming, it helps to compare it to having tight hamstrings in an active class. We’re not chasing relaxation; just breathe, feel and watch,” she says. “Eventually, everything will let go.” “The more our mind rebels against relaxing, the more we need it,” observes Lasater. Students often turn to yoga as a strategy for feeling whole, and she suggests that one of the best ways to find clarity within is to listen in stillness, one savasana at a time. “It’s a gift to ourself, our family and the world,” she adds. “When we feel rested, we’re more compassionate and ready to serve the greater good.”

Yoga Props 101 Yoga props can help new students maintain alignment and reduce strain while allowing veterans to more deeply explore the intricacies of their practice. Always adjust the dimensions and placement of props to ensure comfort via soft curves in the body instead of sharp angles, especially in the spine. Body weight must be distributed equally throughout the pose; key places to check for tension are the lower back, abdomen, neck and jaw muscles. Here are some basic tools. Yoga mats should have a non-skid surface and not exceed three-sixteenths of an inch in thickness. They cushion the body, serve as a blanket or a base for props or can roll up into a bolster. Blankets and towels pad hard areas and warm the body. Different ways of folding and rolling transform them into many firm and comfortable shapes with wide-ranging applications. Blocks in various sizes and materials can be laid flat, placed on edge or stood on end. They can add height or length to the body, access core stability and provide leverage. A stack of hardback books or phone books tied together can work in a pinch. Belts stabilize joints, support inflexible body parts and create traction and space. Typically two inches wide, soft belts with a D-ring locking system are easily adjusted; two soft, wide neckties or scarves tied together are suitable. Avoid material that cuts into the skin.

Bolsters, typically cylindrical or rectangular cushions, provide good supports that are long-lasting, if sometimes costly. Combining folded blankets and rolled mats may be suitable alternatives. Walls provide leverage, vertical support and a structure to rest upon. A closed door or large piece of furniture such as a bookcase or refrigerator works; a room corner simultaneously supports both sides of the body. Chairs are versatile props for any practice and make yoga accessible to those unable to get down onto the floor. Backless folding chairs are typically used in studios, but any sturdy chair that doesn’t roll is suitable. Sandbags, strategically positioned, encourage overworked areas to release. Their weight also provides resistance and stability. Homemade versions can be made by loosely filling a smooth cloth bag with coarse sand, pea gravel or rice. Retail bags of beans, rice or sugar are other options. Eye pillows block out light during resting poses, can gently weight the forehead or hands or support the back of the neck. Typically made of silk or soft cotton, they’re filled with a mixture of flax seeds or rice and soothing herbs such as lavender, peppermint or chamomile. Taking your Power Back from Negative People by Tina Marie St.Cyr, M.S.

A

change the station and move on. I do not linger over that last station and replay the song, singing it for others, and myself to continue to hear. I simply move onto the next station and to the next song. Now when I share this example in my speeches I can see the looks on peoples faces, wondering if I am asking them to move on from a relationship with a negative person and change that station, so to speak. No.. I am not. Changing a station does not mean leaving. We confuse taking back our personal power by needing to make the other person wrong and, often times, by planning our escape or leaving all together. Now, if you are in a physically abusive situation and are in physical danger, I want you to seek immediate help and get away from your attacker. And this is also, not to lessen the impact of emotional or mental abuse, they are also very real. Most of our source of pain in relationships begins with seeing negativity in others, and this tool I am about to share, will help you tremendously. I developed the tools I teach over 20 years of using them myself and in transforming my own life to one of happiness, joy, strength and personal power. Changing the station is a very simple process in shifting perspective, owning the ultimate truth that no-one, and nothing can have us feel a certain way without our permission. Even with the knowing that we are responsible of our own experience, in the midst of living in an environment with those who see the world from a lower than positive place… we can feel very much affected. First I want you to know about the 5 C’s. These ‘ways of being’ are, what I call, the fuel for our Inner Saboteur, that inner disturbance that plagues our thinking and takes us off course and away from love. When we do any of these 5 things or if we notice others doing any of these 5 things.. then our Inner Saboteurs are dictating the conversation and running our thoughts. These ways of being fuel the Inner Saboteur and keep us stuck, and those we love stuck also. Knowing of them creates the first shift as we become more aware and observant. Then the next level of mastery in taking our power back is in learning the human needs that are met by having these way of being.

t the conclusion of a recent series of speeches I did on the truth about negativity and how it affects our life I had a lady approach me and ask, “Can one really change others?” My reply had her look at me with a pensive expression and then nod with a slight, yet deeply reaching smile. My answer, “Are the actions and ways of being of others not changing you?” When we hold the perspective of others being negative we, ourselves, become lowered to that vibration. The truth is that negativity can and does exist and it can and will affect the lives of others. When we elevate ourselves through the very exercise I will impart here at an introductory level, then we The 5 C’s z Complaining can and do take our power back from negativity. Over the years, I have interviewed hundreds of people and have realized that at the root of all perceived negativity, there are one or more of the above behaviors. That is to say, when we find ourselves in the presence of a negative conversation, a negative relationship or abuse, what we would find, if we look closer, is that the person is participating in, and often times, the very source of the 5 C’s. Think for a moment of the times when you have been around a negative person and felt drained. There is a physiological reason for our feeling drained by negativity. The vibration of negative words, thoughts, habits, and harmful actions have a low gravity, a low frequency, a heaviness to them. They literally pull our physiology down. Experiment for yourself, for just a moment, take the posture of a person who is depressed. What happened? Did you shoulders go up and did you raise your head up? No. You went down. You more than likely slumped in your chair and your head faced down. Negative thinking pulls us down. It pulls down the person thinking negative thoughts and it pulls down those around them. The truth is we ‘entrain’ to those around us all the time. Now, to feel the opposite affect, take the posture of a happy, cheerful, confident person. What happened? Did you shoulders go down and slump? No. You raised up, you lifted, you became more present. Your eyes look outward and I bet you took in more information of your surroundings and felt connected. Hmmmm…. interesting, yes? This is a very powerful understanding that I want all my students to understand and if, it works in one direction, it works in ALL directions. So, if negativity drains, positivity lifts. You

have the power to take your power back. And your power is as close as your own posture, perspective and nervous system. In Abolish! we experiment with our own nervous system reactions and have fun with learning new ways to remove ourselves from negativity and get our power back. Now, it’s easy to point fingers and say to ourselves, “Yes they ( he/she) do that. They are so negative.” AND it is life changing to be courageous enough to look at ourselves and ask, “Where do I do this?” My invitation to you, commit to being more aware of the 5 C’s in your life. When you seek to see even clearer your way of engaging in the 5 C’s you shift the energy of the situation. By stopping your own 5 C’s behaviors, you, in essence, change the station. The beauty of it all is that you never had to leave the room. Also, watch your posture. Hold the posture of a positive, strong, confident person. You can make this your way of being, not because your have to force it, but because you are it in your soul. Remember that taking your power back need not be confrontational or painful. Commit to no longer fueling your Inner Saboteur and your life will shift, I guarantee it. Tina Marie is world renowned personal and business coach/ behaviorist specializing in helping her clients overcome and find strength in all disempowering, painful, limiting situations. Her signature program, Abolish Your Inner Saboteur! has transformed the lives of all who have come through the doors. The only way to control what I perceive on the outside is to control what is on the inside of me. When I struggle to change someone else’s perspective of reality I am meddling in their Karmic journey, whether it is a country, a minority, or my own adult child. This does not mean that I don’t share my life with others. It is as important to speak my truth, as it is to witness another’s truth. Letting go of attachment and perceived outcomes is the key to healthy relations. Blessed with two ears and one mouth, may I desire to listen more than I speak. “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” - Mahatma Gandhi

Yoga A Path To Liberation by Lin Weiss

e are living in times of rapid change. Everything is temporary, and yet we continue to grasp and hold on to our perceived realities with a tenacity that, ultimately, results in great suffering. We become “stressed” when we can’t have it our way. Stress creates resistance, resistance creates disharmony and disharmony creates disease. A wise elder once told me that the definition of “stress” is “not liking the way something is on the outside of you.” The continued obsessing over what’s going on, on the outside is indeed unnecessary and self-destructive. The fallacy of this modern, technological, informational era is: that the more we know about the outside world, the safer, more peaceful and more in control we are of our lives, is becoming quite detrimental to us individually, as well as collectively. It is an addiction to a false sense of security, ironically steeping us in fear, and an allegiance to someone else’s perspective that is robbing us of our own sensibilities and the present moment. “Your point of power is in the present moment.” – Abraham Hicks The truth is, I cannot control anything on the outside of me. I can participate in this beautiful incarnate opportunity, doing my part, offering my service, being kind and striving to be the best I can be. But, I cannot change anyone or anything but myself.

There is a divine blueprint for revelation dwelling deep within each individual soul for his or her own discovery, in his own time, and in her own way. We have the opportunity to grow in adversity, or perceived discomfort. The valleys in our lives seem to be the place where we finally realize the call for change and begin our transformation process. This is the proverbial “rock bottom” or muse that can facilitate growth, awa r e n e s s a n d m e t a m o r p h o s i s . The first step to self-liberation is an honest look at how we enslave ourselves. No one and no thing has the power to shut me down or take away my freedom. If my perception is such, then I must take responsibility for how I have created a life of perceived limitation. And, I must put the brakes on blaming someone else for my plight. When blame is placed on another for our perceptions of reality, we unconsciously give our personal power and authority to the recipient of that blame. Thus we create the vicious perpetuation of our own

perceived powerlessness. Perception is reality. “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” – Eleanor Roosevelt Classical Yoga has been practiced for well over 4000 years as a path to selfawareness and liberation. In contrast to its modern Western transplanted forms, traditional Yoga practice essentially consists of ancient postures and meditative practices culminating in a state of consciousness free from all modes of active or discursive thought. Eventually attaining a state where consciousness is unaware of any object external to itself, that is, being only aware of its own nature as consciousness unmixed with any other object. This state is not only desirable in its own right, but its attainment guarantees the practitioner freedom from material pain or suffering, and, indeed, is the primary classical means of attaining liberation from the limited cycle of birth and death in the yogic traditions. While the yoga asanas (postures) are

beneficial to the body in so many ways, the actual practice is a means of clearing the mind and cultivating freedom from the thousands of extraneous thoughts that cross the mind each day. A consistent practice begins to free the body from the mind, creating spaciousness between the vertebrae and disks, bringing fresh oxygen into the body, opening areas of tightness, chronic tension and relieving pain in mind and body. Those who make a commitment to the practice discover bliss in their bodies and a feeling of being at home in their own souls. There is often a newfound feeling of hope and purpose that is restored as mental perceptions, physical holding patterns and inertia are released through the gentle albeit powerful practice of traditional Hatha Yoga. Hatha Yoga is the foundational discipline on which nearly all other styles of yoga are based. Classical Hatha addresses the musculoskeletal, nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular and endocrine systems of the human body, placing emphasis on correct

posture development and healthy anatomy. Consistent practice provides an excellent foundation for a lifetime of self-discovery, building strength and vitality. It is appropriate for beginner, intermediate and advanced students of all ages. A thousand-mile journey begins with a single step. Just begin. Introducing Natural Awakenings Complete Topical Formula with CBD

A Revolutionary New Treatment for Multi-Symptom Relief

What Is CBD?

It works by binding to a network of receptors called CB2 found throughout the body, which are activated either by the body’s naturally occurring endocannabinoids or by phytocannabinoids such as CBD.

(no high; anti-anxiety) compound. CBD has a wide variety of therapeutic applications ranging from the relief and arrest of physical symptoms to the alleviation of mental ailments. Scientific and clinical studies indicate that CBD could be effective in easing symptoms of various difficult-to-control conditions, including: arthritis, epilepsy, seizures, headaches, inflammation, back pain, chronic pain, spasms, nausea, fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, PTSD, stress and many others.

Our endocannabiniod system is found everywhere in our bodies, mostly linked to our immune and nervous systems, as well as our digestion and our brain. This system is critical to the regulation of many important physiological pathways in the human body

erived from the hemp plant in accordance with FDA D regulations and legal in all 50 states, CBD is Cannabidiol, a non-psychoactive

How Does CBD-Infused Complete Topical Formula Work? This CBD-infused topical is absorbed through the skin to provide localized relief of pain, soreness and inflammation; the CBD is also circulated throughout the body by the endocannabiniod system to relieve and control a wide range of symptoms.

Experience the Quick Relief of CBD:

Natural Awakenings is pleased to introduce our brand new transdermal therapy, Complete Topical Formula with CBD. Our CBD-infused lotion is absorbed through the skin for localized relief of pain, soreness and inflammation as well as fullbody, palliative care. When nothing else has worked, completely legal cannabidiol (CBD) derived from the hemp plant has been found by many people to relieve a wide variety of symptoms, including:

including sleep, gastrointestinal activity, cardiovascular activity, pain perception, maintenance of bone mass, protection of neurons, hormonal regulation, metabolism control, immune function, inflammatory reactions and more.

How About the Other Ingredients? My 93 year old mother was diagnosed with lung cancer a few years ago. The cancer has been growing slowly, but steadily. I heard of the use of CBD oil as a treatment for lung cancer. The creator of Complete Topical Formula with CBD recommended my father put the product on my mother’s feet every day. On my mother’s last Oncologist’s visit, after the scan her doctor told her for the first time he saw no cancer growth. He and we were very happy about this. I believe the Complete Topical Formula with CBD slowed, if not stopped the growth of cancer in my mother’s body. Praise God. ~ Larry L.

weight, and regain your RightSize® for a lifetime. The “PEN” equation employs three easy components: “P” = Portion-size with more frequent meals “E” = Energy-surge “N” = Natural nutrition

The revolutionary RightSize® weight loss program has helped 402 people permanently lose over 11,000lbs without a restrictive diet, prolonged exercise, medication, or surgery. The protocol is designed to accelerate your metabolism for weight loss success. The protocol focuses on the metabolic process, which is the series of biochemical reactions that simultaneously build, repair, and break down substances in the body. These reactions give us a unique fingerprint of how fast and efficient each of our bodies utilize the fuel we consume. The key to changing our metabolic tempo is by applying the innovative “PEN” method. The flexible and holistic, “PEN” formula can be used at any time to elevate your metabolism, quickly lose

www.NaturalAwakenings-Houston.com

Portion Size – Do you know thin people who are “always eating?” Smaller portion sizes combined with eating more frequently, enables your body to elevate your metabolism. Eating “two handfuls” or 1.5 cups of your favorite foods every 2-3 hours keeps the body in a “high energy mode.” Let’s think of this as a “fuel model.” Imagine if we were driving across the country in a vintage Corvette. What will happen if we tried to fill it with the 100 gallons of gas required for the entire journey? The excess fuel will spill out and be wasted. Let’s fill the tank with 15 gallons, every three hours and enjoy the fun drive. Energy-Surge – Right before eating will kick start your metabolism. Performing 2-3 minutes of vigorous exercise prior to your meal will quickly elevate your metabolism and burn the fuel more efficiently. The Energy-Surge also prevents your body from storing the fuel as fat. Returning to our cross country journey. Would periodic accelerations get you there faster? Absolutely and there are no speeding tickets with EnergySurge! Natural Nutrition – One hundred years ago, before we had chemical food preservatives like, Tertiary Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) in most pre-packaged foods, Americans were leaner and more fit. Eating unpackaged, natural “earth” foods allows your body to maintain a higher metabolism. Whole grains, beans, vegetables, fruits, and grilled meats are a “higher octane fuel,” thus enhancing our metabolic rhythm. During our trip, re-fueling is needed…remember this is needed every three hours. Imagine you increase the octane level in your fuel at each station. The sludge build-up in the engine would be flushed out of the system; and during your journey you would see an improvement in your Vette’s performance!

Below is an example of how to use the PEN formula throughout one day. It shows how flexible and unique this program is: z Wake up and perform a quick exercise such as 100 scissor kicks. (Energy Surge) z Immediately eat something like a slice of apple. (Portion-size) z After getting dressed for work, eat a quality, unprocessed breakfast. (Naturalnutrition) z After starting work, drink a bottle of naturally sweetened fruit juice after running up 50 stair steps. (E + N) z Eat a snack two hours before lunch. (P)

z Eat dessert two hours after lunch, and yes waiting two hours is essential. (P) z During the drive home eat a natural protein bar. (N) z Before dinner perform an exercise, such as pushups for 2-3 continuous minutes. (E) z Stop eating 12 hours before you will wake up tomorrow. Today America has the greatest epidemic of obesity in history. Approximately 70% of us are overweight or obese. Let’s eat more frequently in a smaller portion size with an Energy-surge before most meals of natural foods to regain our RightSize®!

z Before lunch, grab an office chair and curl it 50 times. (E)
