Los Deportados Recientemente, asistí a la Conferencia Bilingüe Nacional de Asalto Sexual llamada Nuestras Voces. Fui invitada con otros compañeros de la universidad. Presentamos historias de inmigrantes que han sufrido abuso en el trabajo y en sus vidas. Fueron presentadas en forma de actuación. Dos de las historias presentadas eran parte de una investigación etnográfica que yo hice. La conferencia se llevó a cabo en Laredo, Texas. Valio la pena ir, dado caso que conocí a personas de todo el pais y me di cuenta de la gran necesidad de tener gente bilingüe en
el mundo profesional. A pesar de tener una buena experiencia, tambien me toco ver algo bastante desgarrador. Al salir de la conferencia, decidimos tomar un paseo. Nunca nos hubieramos imaginado que íbamos a ver a un camión de la inmigración deportando a gente para México. Nosotros estábamos a punto de cruzar una calle y miramos un camión de inmigración. Este camión se estacionó y se bajaron los agentes de inmigración. Sacaron cosas de abajo del camión. Me imagino que eran las pertenencias de los migrantes. Despues, em-

pezaron a bajarse mujeres. Ellas estaban esposadas y tenían cadenas en sus pies. Les dieron sus pertenencias y les quitaron las esposas y las cadenas. Abrieron una puerta que salía al puente para méxico y les gritaron “let’s go” y soltaron a las mujeres. Despues, siguieron los hombres. Allí en ese grupo, había muchachos de unos 13 años o hasta más jóvenes. Se miraban humillados, cansados, y sin esperanza. Nosotros no sabíamos que hacer. Decidimos hacerles señas con las manos. Hicimos un corazón con las manos y gritamos “no pierdan la fe”. Uno de los agentes de inmigración, que por cierto era paisa, se miraba molesto porque estábamos haciendo eso. Miramos alrededor de 50 migrantes deportados a méxico. Nadie se pone a pensar en que dia a dia, siguen deportando gente. Estas personas al igual que muchos de nosotros venimos a este país por necesidad. Nunca se me va olvidar la cara que tenían los migrantes. Tenían una cara de decepción y angustia. A esos migrantes los soltaron ya en la tarde. Ellos todavía iban a tener que buscar donde dormir esa noche.Mirar como tiran a las personas como animales me dio mucho coraje. Segun, ya nada mas iban a deportar a los que eran una amenaza a este pais, pero yo me preguntaba, ¿Qué amenaza pueden causar estas
personas? Ellos son humanos tambien. Me di cuenta del gran privilegio que tengo como persona y me dio fuerzas de echarle ganas en la vida. Habran deportado a esos migrantes, pero ellos no se van a dar por vencidos. Ellos van a seguir luchando por una vida mejor al igual que todos nosotros. Vanessa Espinoza

Corpus Christi presenta Fiesta de la Flor: Una Celebración de la Vida y Legado de Selena El Centro de Visitantes y Convenciones de Corpus Christi se complace en anunciar un evento muy especial que se estrena en Coastal Bend Spring 2015: Fiesta de la Flor. Presentada por Citgo Fiesta de la Flor es un festival de dos días que celebra la vida y el legado de Selena Quintanilla Pérez, mejor conocida a sus fans como “Queen of Tejano” (La Reina de Tejano). El impacto de Selena en los corazones y vidas de muchos fue algo sin medidas y este evento anual va a ser como un tributo a ella igual a las contribuciones de la música Tejana en todo el mundo. CSL Plasma vende libro de recetas para CSL Plasma Sells crear conciencia de inmunodeficiencia Cookbook for Por Nicholas Cunningham Al menos que usted conozca a alguien que lo tiene o usted mismo lo tenga es muy probable que usted no tenga mucha información acerca de los trastornos de inmunodeficiencia. Michael Sarginson, encargado de Centro CSL Plasma en el centro de Davenport, IA y todos sus empleados quieren cambiar este hecho. Abril es el mes de la Concientización de la Inmunodeficiencia. Immunodeficiency Awareness By Nicholas Cunningham
Unless you know someone with it or have it yourself, you may not know very much information on Immunodeficiency disorders. Michael Sarginson, Center Supervisor at CSL Plasma in downtown Davenport, IA and all the employees there would like to change that. April is immunodeficiency Month. Immunodeficiency disorders prevent your body from being able to fight infections and diseases the way that it should. “The entire Month of April, CSL tries to get a bunch of fundraising ideas together and we donate all the funds to the Immune Deficiency Foundation,” explained Sarginson. They have done this for the past three years but decided to try something new in 2015. “I thought of how everyone in the center constantly talks about food,” said Sarginson. “So I asked everyone for three of their favorite recipes and we had a cookbook made.” 100% of the proceeds will go to the Immune Deficiency
Foundation. The cookbooks cost only $5 as the center hopes to reach their $2,500 goal. In addition to all the money raised going to IDF, each CSL center has a new patient through the Adopt-A-Patient program where IDF will help supplement all the medicine they need to help fight this disease. And if that’s wasn’t enough, CSL has also teamed up with Transitions Business Services where special needs residents help put together the cookbooks helping their social and recreational activity skills. “We are helping Transitions out and they are helping us out,” said Sarginson. “And all together we are helping Immune Deficiency Foundation. Clemencia Spizzirri fue nombrada Maestra del Año de Iowa Por Anastassia Zvoryguina
Ser maestro significa el ser responsable por formar las mentes de niños y niñas e impactarlos de maneras positivas. Es un honor para cualquier maestro ser reconocido por sus esfuerzos. Es un honor aún más grande ser la primera maestra hispana no nacida en los Estados Unidos en recibir el premio especial de Maestra del Año. Clemencia Spizzirri es de Quito, Ecuador. Ella paso 10 años enseñando ingles en Ecuador y hace 12 años ella se mudó a los Estados Unidos donde ahora ella enseña español en la escuela secundaria Merrill en Des Moines. Desde muchísimo antes Spizzirri decidió que ella quería ayudar a la gente a tomar control de sus
vidas. Durante su niñez en Ecuador ella miro muchos jóvenes en las calles tratando de ganar dinero para sobrevivir. Ella notó que muchos de ellos no podían pagar por una educación de calidad. “Observar circunstancias desafortunadas de los jóvenes me desataron la pasión por tomar acción para ayudar a la gente de bajos recursos a levantarse por medio de la educación,” Spizzirri explicó de su deseo de ser maestra. Clemencia Spizzirri creyó que si ella se convirtiera en maestra ella iba a poder hacer una diferencia. Ella entendió que la educación puede ayudar a la gente a “tomar control de sus vidas y liberarlos.” Es esta creencia que motiva a esta maestra a ir más allá de las paredes de su aula. Maestra Spizzirri sabe muy bien que ser
maestra significa impactar a los estudiantes, enseñarles a enfrentar la vida con aptitudes e inspirarlos a nunca dejar de aprender. “Mi trabajo no es limitado a los estudiantes; también yo hago el esfuerzo para trabajar con las familias de mis estudiantes y así poder crear el circulo de sustentabilidad y reforzar la misma comunidad,” maestra Spizzirri nos explicó sus creencias. No es una sorpresa que su antiguos estudiantes la nominaron para el premio de Maestra del Año en Iowa. Spizzirri también es la primera maestra hispana no nacida en este país que ganó este premio. Ella nos contó que ella estaba muy emocionada al enterarse que sus estudiantes la nominaron porque esto demuestra que
ella de verdad hace bien su trabajo de maestra y ella ha impactado y continúa en impactar las vidas de sus estudiantes. Spizzirri dijo que es un gran honor poder ganar el premio de Maestra del Año en Iowa. Una llamada simple telefónica de parte de Dr. Brad Buck de Departamento de Educación de Iowa le cambió la vida por completo. “Voy a servir como embajadora de los maestros del estado de Iowa y también represento a la comunidad entera,” Spizzirri dijo. El nombre Clemencia es sinónimo de compasión y no cabe duda que para ganarse el premio de la Maestra del Año y para dejar huella en sus estudiantes siempre es necesario un poco de compasión.

Clemencia Spizzirri wins the Iowa Teacher of the Year Award By Anastassia Zvoryguina
To be a teacher is to be responsible for shaping children’s minds and impacting them in positive ways. It is an honor for any teacher to be recognized for their efforts. It is even a greater honor to be a first Hispanic who is not born in the US to receive a special Iowa Teacher of the Year award. Clemencia Spizzirri is from Quito, Ecuador. She taught English in Ecuador for 10 years and 12 years ago she came to the United States where she now teaches Spanish at Merrill Middle School IB in Des Moines. Early on in her life Spizzirri decided she wanted to empower people. Growing up in Ecuador she saw a lot of young people on the street trying to make a living. She noticed that many of them could not afford a quality education. “Observing the unfortunate circumstances of the youth sparked my passion to take action in helping the impoverished to elevate them through education,” Spizzirri explained of her desire to become a teacher. Clemencia Spizzirri believed she could make a difference by becoming a teacher. She understood early on that education can “empower and liberate people.”
It is that belief that drives her to go beyond her classroom walls. Teacher Spizzirri knows very well that being a teacher means impacting students, teaching them to confront life situations with capability and inspire them to never stop learning. “My work is not only limited to my students; I also strive to work with my students’ families to create a cycle of sustainability and empower the community itself,” Teacher Spizzirri explains her beliefs. It is no wonder that her former students nominated her for the Iowa Teacher of the Year award. Spizzirri is also the first Hispanic who is not born in this country to win this award. She explained that she was very emotional to learn that her students nominated her because this shows that she really does her work as a teacher and she truly has impacted and continues to impact her students’ lives. Spizzirri said that it is a great honor to win the Iowa Teacher of the Year Award. The simple phone call from Dr. Brad Buck, Director of Iowa Department of Education, changed her whole life. “I will serve as an ambassador of the teachers from the state of Iowa and I am also representing an entire community,” Spizzirri told.
The name Clemencia translates to compassion and there is no doubt that to win the Teacher of the Year Award and to make a difference in a student’s life a little compassion always helps. A skinny kid from Buffalo, Iowa is now the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion By Latin Thunder Years ago around 2005 I met a couple young teenagers before a small independent wrestling show in Rock Island. Ones name was Nick Morrill, the other was Colby Lopez. A few months later I saw the two at another small show for IPW in the tiny town of Delta Iowa. It was their first paid wrestling match, soon after they changed their names to Marek Brave and Tyler Black. They slowly began to make a name for themselves in the independent wrestling scene. Unfortunately Marek Brave suffered a terrible injury in the ring that put him out of action for years. Lopez continued his journey. When the Buffalo Iowa native was signed to WWE in 2010 Lopez was given the name Seth Rollins. After 2 years in the Florida Developmental system he was called up to the main roster as a member of the three person tag team The Shield. They made an immediate impact headlining cards all over the world and PPV. I remember being a bit surprised when Rollins soon after left Florida to move back to the Quad Cities. Making big money, in a great spot for the world wide WWE he could have lived anywhere. He chose to come home to his Iowa roots and still resides in Davenport Iowa. This past weekend on March 29th Lopez realized his childhood dream and won the WWE world heavyweight title. Lopez won the belt on the grandest stage in Sports Entertainment Wrestlemania in front of over 75,000 fans and millions more on TV. It was an exciting moment
for every WWE fan watching live and on PPV. But for me and so many others it was a truly special, rare amazing moment seeing the culmination of Colby Lopez journey from teenage independent wrestler to the height of the WWE. When I met Colby Lopez I thought he was a nice humble young man who had many of the same dreams I had at his age. When I began to be on cards with him around Iowa I began to see he had much more maturity than I ever did at that age. He also had a burning ambition and a tireless work ethic that blew me and all those around him away. I thought he had the talent and work ethic to reach the WWE. But I also knew it’s a long hard road. So many things can keep people from reaching the heights of WWE. Injuries, arrogance, apathy, being homesick, women and the road are just a few roadblocks a young wrestler must navigate. He knocked down everything thrown at him. And now he’s champion of the world. But he’s still the nice guy I met over ten years ago. Last year he opened up a wrestling school in Moline with his old friend Marek Brave, The Black & Brave Wrestling Academy. Now young people here in the Quad Cities and surrounding areas who dream of getting into pro wrestling can get trained by a WWE champion. I can still remember a small wrestling card I helped put together in heavily Hispanic Columbus Junction. I asked Colby about his last name. Was he Hispanic? He told me he was not, but his stepdad was. He loved Mexican food and its culture. He was proud of his Mexican

American family. He expressed regret he didn’t speak Spanish, it would have given him some opportunities in wrestling. He seemed to do ok. We didn’t have a big crowd. But it didn’t deter the future Seth Rollins. He went out and had an outstanding match that showcased all his skills. During intermission he posed for pictures with the fans and as a student of the craft of wrestling he watched every match from the back. I’ve learned a lot watching the journey of this young man. About dreams and the
work and sacrifices required from them. It’s been an absolute joy. I look forward to seeing him in action at the WWE Smackdown show Tuesday April 28th at the iWireless Center in Moline. Un muchacho flaquito de Buffalo, Iowa es ahora el Nuevo campeón de WWE Por Latin Thunder Hace años, alrededor del 2005, yo conocí a un par de adolescentes luchadores antes de empezar el show independiente de luchas libres en Rock Island. Sus nombres eran Nick Morrill y Colby Lopez. Unos meses después vi a estos dos muchachos en otro show pequeño para IPW en el pueblito pequeño de Delta Iowa. Esta fue su primera lucha de paga, un poco después ellos cambiaron sus nombres a Marek Brave y Tyler Black. Poco a poco empezaron a darse a conocer en el circuito de las luchas independientes. Desafortunadamente, Marek Brave sufrió una terrible lesión y eso lo mantuvo fuera de acción por años. López siguió su camino. Cuando este muchacho de Buffalo, Iowa firmó contrato con WWE en el 2010 le dieron el nombre de Seth Rollins. Después de 2 años en el Sistema de Desarrollo en Florida lo llamaron para ser uno de los miembros del trío de luchadores llamado The Shield para el equipo de estelares de WWE. Ellos hicieron impacto inmediato encabezando las carteleras de luchas por todo el mundo y PPV (Pay-per-view). Recuerdo que me sorprendí al saber que poco después Rollins dejo Florida y se mudó de regreso a los Quad Cities. Él ganaba buen dinero, participaba en el gran deporte para WWE mundial y podía vivir en cualquier parte del mundo. Él decidió regresar a sus raíces en Iowa y aún sigue viviendo en Davenport, Iowa. diente hasta el punto más alto de WWE. Cuando yo conocí a Colby López se me hizo un joven bueno y humilde que tenía los mismos sueños que yo tuve a su edad. Cuando me pusieron en las carteleras de peleas con él en Iowa empecé a ver que él era más maduro para su edad de lo que yo nunca fui. También él tiene ardiente aspiración y ética laboral incansable que me fascinó a mí y a los demás alrededor de él. Yo sabía que él tenía suficiente talento y ética laboral para llegar a WWE. Pero también sabía que era un camino largo y duro. Hay muchas cosas que pueden detenerlo a uno de alcanzar la cima de WWE. Lesiones, arrogancia, apatía, melancolía, mujeres y la vida ausente de casa son solo unos cuantos de los obstáculos que un luchador joven tiene que navegar. Él venció todo que se le ponía en frente y ahora el es campeón mundial. Pero también él sigue siendo el mismo hombre agradable que conocí hace años. El año pasado él, junto con su amigo Marek Brave, abrió la escuela de lucha libre en Moline que se llama Academia de Lucha Libre Black & Brave. Ahora jovencitos de los Quad Cities y sus alrededores que tienen el sueño de convertirse en luchadores profesionales pueden entrenarse con el campeón de WWE. Todavía recuerdo la cartelera de luchas que yo ayudé a preparar en Columbus Junction, pueblo donde viven muchos hispanos. Le pregunté acerca de su apellido de Colby, López. Le pregunte si era hispano. Él me dijo que no era, pero su padrastro era. Le encantaba la comida y cultura mexicana. Él estaba muy orgulloso de su familia mexico-americana. Él se sentía abrumado de no poder hablar español, porque así podría tener más oportunidades en la lucha libre. Pero me parece que las cosas le han ido bien de cualquier manera. No tuvimos mucha gente. Pero esto no disuadió el futuro de Seth Rollins. Él salió y tuvo una pelea excelente que demostró todas sus habilidades. Durante el intermedio él posó para fotografías con
los fans y siendo el arduo estudiante de lucha libre él miró todas las luchas desde el fondo del lugar. He aprendido mucho siguiendo la trayectoria de este joven. Aprendí sobre sueños y los sacrificios que se tienen que hacer para alcanzarlos. Ha sido una alegría absoluta. Espero verlo en acción en el show de WWE Smackdown martes 28 de abril en el centro iWireless de Moline.

Periodista ganadora del premio Pulitzer hablará en la Universidad Drake sobre inmigración infantil Periodista ganadora del premio Pulitzer, que tiene más de 20 años haciendo reportajes sobre problemas sociales incluyendo el hambre, adicción a los drogas e inmigración en los Estados Unidos, presentará una conferencia publica en la Universidad Drake en Des Moines, Iowa. El tema de discusión de Sonia Nazario es “La Travesía de Enrique y el Dilema de Inmigración de los Niños de América” basado en sus reportajes y se llevara acabo el viernes 3 de abril a las 12:30 PM en Meredith Hall 101 en el campus de Drake. Después de la conferencia, que es gratis y está abierta a público, habrá un diálogo en español del libro de Nazario a las 2:00 PM. Nazario ganó el premio Pulitzer en el 2003 por su reportaje especial “La Travesía de Enrique” una historia de lucha de un niño de Honduras que buscaba a su madre en los Estados Unidos. También el libro ganó diferentes premios como el Premio de George Polk de Reportaje Internacional, el Premio de periodismo Grand Prize de Robert F. Kennedy, y premio de Asociación de Periodistas His-

Para tener un restaurante de comida Mexicana exitoso uno tiene que hacer las cosas de diferente minera. Algunos restaurantes se enfocan más en la comida y se olvidan de la decoración, mientras que otros ponen más atención en las decoraciones y se olvidan del sabor. Abraham Tijerina, el dueño de Casa Azul Restaurante y Cantina en Coralville, IA, parece encontrar el balance perfecto entre comida deliciosa y un lugar precioso donde comerla. El Sr. Tijerina, nació en el estado de Guanajuato, México y creció en el estado de Veracruz, empezó a trabajar en la industria de restaurantes hace muchos años. Igual a muchos inmigrantes, él también soñó con tener su propio negocio y finalmente la oportunidad, que anhelaba por tanto tiempo, llegó. “Siempre esta el miedo al arriesgarse y enfrentarte a algo nuevo, pero yo sabía que podía hacerlo,” el Sr. Tijerina nos explicó. Fue una tarea fácil para él simplemente porque él cree en representar México por medio de la comida y el comedor de su restaurante está lleno de historia y tributos a algunos grandes pintores de México. “Aquí hacemos lo que nos apasiona y estamos acogiendo nuestra cultura y comida,” el Sr. Tijerina nos comento. El explicó que no quería que su restaurante fuese igual a otros. Él quería que sus clientes disfrutaran la comida deliciosa en un comedor lleno de artesanías y tradiciones de México. El Sr. Tijerina explicó que algunas de las paredes y decoraciones del restaurante representan el Día de los Muertos, una celebración mexicana muy conocida que tiene más de 500 años, “y algo así es lo que nos define como una cultura.”
Casa Azul Restaurante y Cantina también tiene reproducciones de obras de arte de Frida Kahlo y Diego Rivera y tradicional piezas de vajilla de Talavera. El Sr. Tijerina de verdad creó un lugar donde México es celebrado cada día con comida deliciosa y arte hermoso. Cuando se trata de la comida, el Sr. Tijerina ofrece comida del centro de México. “Nosotros enfatizamos comida de calidad,” Sr. Tijerina aseguró y claro, no se puede esperar menos de una persona que se enorgullece de ser como un embajador de la cultura mexicana en Coralville, IA. Entre muchos platillos exquisitos uno de los platillos más populares es el Espagueti Poblano hecho con salsa de queso chihuahua y chile poblano. El Centro Multicultural Familiar de Dubuque Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Los Estados Unidos siempre han sido un crisol de culturas. La gente de todas partes del mundo vienen a este país buscando oportunidades. Es muy importante que recién llegados sean parte de la cultura estadounidense y también es esencial que ellos compartan su cultura con los ciudadanos estadounidenses porque cuando la gente diversa se une entonces cosas maravillosas pueden pasar. El Centro Multicultural Familiar en Dubuque es un lugar donde las personas de culturas diferentes pueden reunirse, compartir y crecer. El Centro Multicultural Familiar (MFC por sus siglas en ingles) abrió sus puertas el 9 de julio del 2005. MFC fue abierto para ofrecer servicios educacionales y no lucrativos, alcance a la comunidad, construcción de la comunidad y desarrollo económico y personal. Fue una tarea enorme para esta organización nueva. Por eso a lo largo de los años ellos desarrollaron una estrategia especial que además de conocer a la comunidad también puede abordar necesidades de los miembros de la comunidad. MFC ofrece una variedad de programas a todos los que están interesados en el área de Dubuque. Según la pagina Web de MFC, “Relaciones – entre generaciones, entre culturas, entre razas – son el corazón de identidad de MFC. No importa cual es su cultura, raza o edad, todos son bienvenidos aquí. MFC ofrece muchísimos diferentes programas educacionales y culturales a los miembros de la comunidad de Dubuque. The Multicultural Family Center in Dubuque By Anastassia Zvoryguina The United States has always been known as a melting pot of cultures. People from all over the world come to this land of opportunities. It is very important not only for newcomers to become part of the American culture, but also it is essential to be able to share one’s culture with people of the United States because when diverse people unite great things are bound to happen. The Multicultural Family Center in Dubuque is a place where different cultures can come together, share and grow. The Multicultural Family Center (MFC) first opened its doors on July 9 of 2005. The MFC was opened to provide educational and non-profit services, outreach, community building and personal and economic development. It was a big task for a new organization. That is why throughout the years they developed a special approach that would not only reach out to the community, but also address the needs of the members of the community. The MFC offers a variety of programs to anyone interested in Dubuque. According to the MFC website, “Relationships –intergenerational, intercultural, and interracial – are at the core of the MFC’s identity.” No matter culture, race or age everyone is welcomed here. MFC offers a great selection of education and cultural programs to Dubuque community members. Among countless interesting programs there are programs for the whole family including computers for families, cultural cooking nights, Juntos: Together for a better Education, Flavors of the Philippines. Also there are a lot of programs many adults might be interested in. They have programs for women’s self defense, adult hip hop, zumba, capoeira, qigong, qi therapy, African American play reading club, French café. MFC offers quite a few interesting programs for teens as well. Among them there is teen night, teen empowerment, teen tech club, LGBT+Youth Network, and tutoring program. Youth programs include youth hip hop, kung fu, capoeira, Spanish language immersion, beginning
chapters’ book club and tutoring. In order to be a successful Mexican restaurant you have to stand out. Some restaurants focus on the food and forget about the décor, while others put everything into the décor and forget about the taste. Abraham Tijerina, owner of Casa Azul Restaurante y Cantina in Coralville, IA, seems to strike the right balance between delicious food and a beautiful place where to eat it. Mr. Tijerina, born in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico and raised in Veracruz, started in the restaurant industry many years ago. As many immigrants, he also dreamed of having his own business and finally the long awaited opportunity came. “There is always fear to leave your comfort zone and risk it all, but I knew I could do it,” Mr. Tijerina explained. There it was the chance to become a proud owner of a unique restaurant in Coralville, IA. It does not matter where one lives, chances are there are at least a couple of Mexican restaurants in your area, so Mr. Tijerina had to come up with a way to be different. It was an easy task for him simply because he in representing Mexico through food and the dining room of his restaurant is filled with history and tributes to some the greatest painters of Mexico. “Here we are doing what we love and embracing our culture and our food,” Mr. Tijerina said. Mr. Tijerina explained that he did not want his restaurant to be similar to others out there. He wanted his customers to enjoy delectable dishes in a room that proudly shows off folk art and traditions of Mexico. Mr. Tijerina explained that some of the walls and décor feature the Day of the Dead, a well known Mexican tradition that goes back over 500 years, “and is something that defines us as a culture.” Casa Azul Restaurante y Cantina also has replicas of the artwork of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and talavera pottery. Mr. Tijerina truly created a place where Mexico is celebrated every day through delicious food and beautiful art. When it comes to food, Mr. Tijerina offers central Mexican cuisine. “We emphasize in quality foods,” Mr. Tijerina assured and of course, one cannot expect less from a person who prides himself in being ambassador of Mexican culture in Coralville, IA. Among many scrumptious dishes one of the most popular is Spaghetti Poblano made with a secret Poblano pepper and Chihuahua cheese sauce. For those customers who are avoiding carbs there is the Molcajete that is sure to please anyone. The Molcajete is mix of grilled steak, chicken, chorizo and shrimp that is cooked
with onions, cactus and goat cheese and it comes in a traditional Mexican volcanic rock bowl (the molcajete). And if a customer wishes to get something that is a little different from tacos or enchiladas there is a dish called Pollo Azul on the menu. Those who are looking to add more vegetables to their daily diets will be delighted with this dish that is on a healthier side. Pollo Azul is made with spinach, onions, mushrooms, gold and red peppers, cheese sauce and zucchini. Mes de Prevención de Abuso Infantil invita a todo el mundo a tomar acción para prevenir abuso infantil El Consejo contra Abuso Infantil está celebrando Mes Nacional de Prevención de Abuso Infantil durante el mes de abril con la promoción del ideal que cuando todos los niños tienen una estupenda niñez que ellos merecen, los residentes de los Quad Cities tendrán un futuro más prospero. El Mes Nacional de la Prevención de Abuso Infantil es cuando las comunidades de toda la nación reconocen el papel que todos tienen en lo que se trata en prevención de abuso infantil. Las investigaciones recientes demuestran que los niños que pasan por abuso, abandono u otro evento traumático están en mayor riesgo de tener mala salud además de tener problemas con aprendizaje y conducta. Una encuesta de adultos de Iowa encontró que en comparación con los adultos sin experiencias traumáticas aquellos quienes tuvieron problemas de abuso cuatro o más veces en su vida cuando eran niños (14 por ciento) evaluaron su salud como
mala lo doble de otras personas, también esas personas son cinco veces más probables de enfermarse de depresión, cuatro veces más probables de tener enfermedades de pulmones y casi tres veces más probable de tener enfermedades del corazón. A lo largo del mes de abril el Consejo contra Abuso Infantil va a celebrar con patrocinio de eventos para comunidad para enseñarles sobre prevención. El 10 de Abril es el “Blueout Day” (El Día Azul) se pide que la comunidad vista ropa de color
azul para mostrar su apoyo a la prevención de abuso infantil. El Consejo contra Abuso Infantil también se ha asociado con organizaciones del área para plantar pequeños jardines para despertar conciencia y promover una niñez llena de alegría y saludable. Child Abuse Prevention Month invites everyone to take action to prevent child abuse. The Child Abuse Council is celebrating National Child Abuse Prevention Month during the month of April to promote the idea that, when all children have the great childhoods they deserve, the citizens of the Quad Cities will have a more prosperous future. National Child Abuse Prevention Month is a time when communities nationwide recognize the role everyone plays in preventing child abuse. Current research shows that children who experience abuse, neglect or other traumatic events are at greater risk for poor health, learning and behavior outcomes. A survey of Iowa adults found that, compared to adults with no traumatic experiences, those who experienced four or more adverse events as children (14 percent) were more than twice as likely to rate their health poorly, five times more likely to be diagnosed with clinical depression, four times more
likely to have lung disease and nearly three times more likely to have heart disease. The Child Abuse Council works to prevent child abuse by helping caregivers manage stress, strengthen connections, learn parenting skills and access resources so that they can create stable and healthy environments for their children. Through programs focused on treatment, education, and prevention, families receive support and resources each year. Throughout the month of April the Child Abuse Council will be celebrating by sponsoring community prevention awareness events. On April 10, “Blueout Day,” they ask the community to wear blue to show commitment to child abuse prevention. Child Abuse Council will also be teaming up with area or-
ganizations to plant pinwheel gardens to raise awareness and promote joyful, healthy childhoods. Below is the list of dates and times of garden dedication ceremonies. The Deported By Vanessa Espinoza Recently I attended the Bilingual National Conference on Sexual Assault called Our Voices (Nuestras Voces). I was invited along with other students. We presented immigrant stories that of the people that suffered abuse at work and in their lives. It was presented in the form of performing arts. Two of the stories presented there were part of the ethnographic research that I made. The conference was at Laredo, Texas. It was great experience and I met a lot of people from all over the country and here I understood the necessity of having
bilingual professionals. Despite of having a great experience I also was a witness of something heartbreaking. At the end of the conference we decided to walk around. We never even imagined that we would see an immigration truck deporting people to Mexico. We were about to cross the street and we saw the truck from immigration services. The truck stopped and the immigration agents came out. They took out some things from the bottom of the truck. I think these were immigrants’ personal effects. Afterwards, women started to come out. They had hand-
cuffs and chains on their legs. Agents gave them their personal belongings and took off their handcuffs and chains. They opened the door to Mexico and screamed “let’s go” and let the women pass. Men were next. In that group there was a young person that couldn’t be older than 13 years old and there were younger ones as well. They all looked humiliated, tired and without a hope. We did not know what to do. We decided to make signs with our hands and we screamed, “don’t lose faith.” One of the immigration agents, by the way he was Hispanic, looked irri-
tated because we were doing that. We watched about 50 immigrants being deported to Mexico. Nobody takes time to think that every day people are being deported. Those people, like many of us, came to this country because of the necessity. I will never forget the faces of those immigrants. Deception and angst was written on their faces. These immigrants were let go in the afternoon. They still had to look for a place to spend night. Watching how they threw people as they were animals made me angry. They said that they wouldn’t deport anyone who
is not a threat to a country, but I was asking myself, what kind of threat do these people pose? They are also humans. I understood that I have a great privilege as a person and I got strength to
go on in my life. They might have deported those immigrants, but they will not give up. They will continue fighting for their lives like we all do.
