Student name, date and rotation number must be listed on each drug card. Students are no required to submit drug cards while on their elective rotation. Should a student fail to produce these cards when asked, a grade of zero will be given for this portion of the site visit grade.
Interesting Patient Case Assignments The interesting patient case assignment is a requirement during the site visit for the Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, Ob/Gyn, Internal Medicine, and Psychiatry rotations. For students that do not have a site visit for these clerkships, they will either present or hand-in their interesting patient case on call back day. Students that present the interesting case during call back day should be prepared to lead a discussion with their fellow classmates and the clinical coordinator. This discussion should include all the elements of a focused H &P, pathophysiology and a literature search of the illness or treatment of the interesting patient. The literature search should only contain references from academic, peer-reviewed medical journals, less than 5 years old. A summary of the pathophysiology of the disease state as well as one journal article documented with an “Evaluating a Peer Reviewed Scientific Article� is required for this assignment. Students are highly encouraged to provide hand-outs at their presentations. Students who do not have a formal presentation are still required to include the above components in their written assignments. While notes or an outline may be referred to during the presentation, reading from their notes verbatim is not appropriate. The interesting case assignment format is can be submitted as either a written document or Power Point presentation in the same format as a focused H & P note. The interesting case patient can not duplicate patients used for the required SOAP or H&P notes. Failure to submit this project will result in a grade of zero for this portion of the clerkship grade.
Continuing Medical Education Project During the Surgery rotation, students will be assigned a CME project. This project may be either webbased or found in a peer-review journal article. Students must submit proof of completion of the CME project either during a site visit or on call back day if a visit has not occurred. A 100% will be awarded to students who complete the project and display a good understanding of the CME topic. If you have a CME project and you are scheduled for a site visit, be prepared to discuss your assignment during your site visit. Failure to submit this project will result in a grade of zero for this portion of the clerkship grade.
Health Promotion Project An important element of Family Medicine Clerkship is to promote healthy lifestyles, identify risky behavior and prevent complications from chronic illness. Therefore, during the Family Medicine rotation, students will be assigned a health promotion project. The objective of this project is to explore ways to enable patients to increase control over risk factors, thereby improving health outcomes. This project provides a vehicle for students to counsel, teach and support patients about preventive measures for their disease states and to evaluate the effectiveness of their efforts. The student will choose a patient with chronic illness or lifestyle risk factors and provide counseling. Afterward, the student completes the questionnaire found in the appendix. Question number 4 requires that the student follow-up with the patient. This can be accomplished via a follow-up visit or by telephone conversation.
