wesome music! Cool cars! Great fun! What else could I be talking about except the International City Fall Festival? The Warner Robins Downtown Development Authority is once again bringing back the Fall Music and Art Festival to Commercial Circle. Last year, the organization was able to put together a great event and bring back one of Warner Robin’s long lost events after a ten year hiatus. This year, the celebration will start at 9 am on Saturday, September 29, 2012 and the fun will rock on till 6 pm. They will have lots of arts and crafts and food and fun for the whole family! I did mention music! They have over a half dozen groups set to perform that day, from Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Country and of course some Southern

Rock to keep things moving! Downtown Development Authority Chairman Tony Robbins said festival profits will pay for benches, landscaping and downtown improvement projects. With the monies raised from the Festival, they will be able to make the area more appealing to businesses, families and colleges nearby. Confused about Warner Robins “downtown?” Commercial Circle is an original part of our great city that actually predates Warner Robins and goes back to old town Wellston, thus the festival theme, "Remembering Yesterday, Celebrating Tomorrow." To sign up for the Backyard BBQ Competition, email us at internationalcityfestival@gmail.com. For more information about volunteering, or becoming a vendor, call (478) 238-3656.

Jami Purser wants to drive her vision of glamour into the future. When Tranquility Spa and Salon of Warner Robins, located in the Galleria shopping center across from the Galleria Mall Theaters, closed its doors last year, Jami took the initiative. She bought up the property and went to work making her dream a reality. I spoke to Jami about her new venture, Glamour Salon and Spa, and what she hopes to offer the Houston County area.

MEET THE BOSS

Jami Purser of Glamour Salon & Spa

8 SEPTEMBER 2012

It’s a given that a salon will offer haircut and styling services but you find that a lot of places offer a lot of different services. What are some of the services unique to Glamour? Jami: Glamour carries Aquage products, which have a price point comparable to Aveda but I feel that they are more effective. So many clients go to the wash bowl and walk away after their style running their fingers through their hair. I get a lot of “My hair hasn’t felt like this in years! The stress of coloring and styling does damage that often gives hair a straw-like texture after a while and with consistent use of Aquage products, you eliminate that. I use the Sea Extend Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner myself. We also offer facials from our on staff aesthetician, we have a nail tech on the premises, eyelash extensions and airbrush makeup. Where did you train? I trained at Aveda in Atlanta. It was a great experience and I was exposed to a lot of current techniques, learned

a lot, but I just find that for me personally, the products are lacking, particularly in the color care category. The Black Malva and Rosemary Mint don’t seem to preserve the integrity of color as much as I like. That is why, when I opened my own salon, I chose Aquage as my preferred brand. My customers seem to support that choice! Continuing education is really important to me and I have a mandatory policy in my salon that my stylists attend one show a year in Orlando, the Premiere. I myself attend two. It’s important for stylists to stay current and I want to make sure all of my stylists are. The education fund from our retail sales pays for each of them to learn more about their craft every year. We also have in store educators that contribute throughout the year. Have you noticed any trends in the area in the past or currently? There is a technique right now in color that is huge at the moment. “Ombre” is a color fading style that we have been doing a lot of. You see some really bad work done in ombre because it can come off looking like roots if it isn’t layered just so. We do a great job with it. Last year, it was stacked bobs all the way. Some years it’s cut, some years it’s color. This year is definitely a color year. What would you say your mission statement is? I want to give the women our area ease of access to the kind of high end salon experience that you can find in metropolitan centers. It’s our aim at Glamour to offer a singular beauty experience to our customers and have them leave feeling glamorous and gorgeous! Glamour Salon is located at 115 Margie Drive in Warner Robins, next door to the Lamb’s Well. Call for an appointment (478)333-2000

DINING SPOTLIGHT

Georgia Bob’s Barbecue

Whether you choose to pop in the modest sight off of Russell Parkway in Warner Robins, or to take in the experience au gourmand at the Byron location, you’ll be drooling over the Southern fare

W

hen I was several months pregnant with my second child, for the first time in my life, I craved ribs. I didn’t want just any. Only one place would do under the circumstances. I sought out Georgia Bob’s, not once, but many many times over the course of those long months. I can say now, that though there are many very good places for barbeque in the middle Georgia area, Georgia Bob’s was made my very own that year. My gold standard craving was and still is the St. Louis style pork ribs, slow smoked over a charcoal pit (the way God intended) and drizzled with one of their many sauces. I inevitably choose spicy. The tender meat falls off of the bone in strips of succulent smokiness. They can be served in a half pound serving without any sides and be superb, but not so perfect as when they are coupled with Georgia Bob’s signature Carolina style Brunswick stew, or the crisp fries. My husband, who is not what one would call a connoisseur of barbeque is what I would call over-fond of their beef brisket sandwiches, and could easily put away two or three of these already generously stacked buns in one sitting. Don’t dare ask him to share. Many a customer can’t say enough about the chicken salad, and in fact more than one reviewer has commented that it is “the best chicken salad I have ever eaten”. It comes as little surprise as it is made with care and from scratch. All of the meats and salads are offered in bulk portions for parties or catering and are priced very competitively. The fried fare served at Georgia Bob’s is cooked carefully in oil that is certified zero trans fat and though this isn’t health food, the company endeavors to ensure that your indulgence is as healthy as they can make it, without sacrificing the bite you come to expect from such an established tradition. Georgia Bob’s is as southern as a southern company can be whose namesake is a lifetime resident of Peach county. The company was born and raised in the agricultural seat of our state, surrounded by pecan groves and pastures. map with the Brunswick stew and they have continued to create and innovate their menu over the years, while never sacrificing their dedication to the traditional Southern style of cooking. In fact, they make it a point to mention that, as it has been done for more than 150 years, so it is done today. You can find Georgia Bob’s restaurant at one of four locations in the Central Georgia area. Milledgeville, Macon, Byron and Warner Robins are all host to one but at the Byron location you can find their real attachment to the land. There, the company has laid its roots and established the Cane River Vineyard with a selection of wines, cheeses, sausages, gifts, jams and jellies, all with a uniquely Southern flair. Opened in 2010, it quickly became an appreciated destination spot for foodies look-

ing for something a little different. Their best selling vine is the Peach Valley Peach Muscadine Wine. Chilled, it is an excellent pairing with some of those spicy ribs and a side of cole slaw on warm Southern nights, if you are looking for something that packs a little more punch than a Mason jar of sweet tea. The Robin’s Red is a good option for those looking for a familiar dry style similar to a merlot, a good pairing with meat on any occasion in my opinion. The vineyard is also available to host and cater special events, accommodating 60 seated or 100 at the “mingling” package. Whether you choose to pop in at the modest sight off of Russell Parkway in Warner Robins, or to take in the experience au gourmand at the Byron site, go take a bite at Georgia Bob’s, and join the rest of us die-hard fans. Whether it’s love at first bite, as it was in my case, or exploring menu options looking for “just right”, you’re bound to find something to love and a little Southern something extra. Georgia Bob’s and Cane River Vineyards can be found online at georgiabobs.com or call their home office for more information at 877-GABOBS1. RACHEL HELIE

September 8th is a joyous day to begin what will give birth to this six week long celebration of the music that makes us who we are in Middle Georgia, and gives a spotlight to the people whose talent uniquely defines our communities. This is what makes each stop on the New Harmonies tour so singular. Not only does it celebrate national history, it incorporates the local present and hopes to encourage the future of the communities it visits. Above: World-reknowned violinist Robert McDuffie

NEW HARMONIES, DEEP ROOTS THE SMITHSONIAN BRINGS THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN MUSIC TO PERRY, AND PERRY BRINGS A MONTH FULL OF FANTASTIC MUSIC-RELATED EVENTS (MOST OF WHICH ARE FREE) TO YOU! The sound was small at first, a little melody lingering in the hot nights of summer, a twang of a guitar or a soothing note like a lullaby you half remember. I first noticed it over ten years ago. In the calm luxury of my bohemian college days while socializing with friends, in the days before everyone everywhere had a smart phone, we would gather on the front porch of a taciturn old house, shared by many an artist and musician, and we would play. Guitars and drums would come out, banjo or ukulele here and there. There was an exploration happening during those long nights that we only halfrealized as we tinkered with new slants to old sounds. It was the first time I had heard these personal perspectives applied to traditions in bluegrass and jazz, country and Tejana. Since then, there is a revival happening, an undercurrent that has now manifested itself in popular forms not just in the U.S. but all over the world. Even popular music in America seems to be looking to its roots, finding instruction in its history and informing a whole new sound with the passions of our collective past. The Smithsonian touring exhibition New Harmonies, began moving across the country last year, traveling the United States and bringing with it the sound of America. America, they point out in their online content, “is the birthplace of more music than any place on earth”. Two years ago in Perry, a dedicated core of interested volunteers began the application process through the Georgia Humanities to become a host community, one of twelve that will be participating in the state of Georgia. That has culminated into something truly special for the middle Georgia community, something that integrates talent from all over the midstate. New Harmonies is part of an initiative organized through the Smithsonian Institute that seeks to bring the majesty and grandeur of the nation’s history, music, art, and science to small towns across the country. America has long been a place of endless innovation, no less in art and music as it has

been in industry and commerce. From the riotous luxury of river jazz and the field harmonies that cried out to God in the form of spirituals, to the tempestuous rebellion of country music, the history is rich and diverse, both complex and simple. The influence and force of the music forms a picture of America and in fact each community at their best and at their worst; it gleans beauty in the midst of great difficulty and challenge. It begs us to love life in spite of itself. Through the Museum on Main Street project, tiny hamlets with rich culture and history can contribute to the larger picture of the New Harmonies exhibit. The Perry Art Center stepped up their game and stepped forward to host and they have organized an impressive calendar of events that will span the entire month of September, well into October as the fourth stop on the exhibits national tour. This strategic scheduling integrates the lively fall festival atmosphere of autumn in Perry with the world of music that the Smithsonian exhibit offers. The rhythm of life is in our blood, in the soil and water that we drink. The music of the middle Georgia area is rich and it is a story of our multicultural backgrounds. The roots of American music are as tangled as those of the people who make up our tapestry, our “melting pot”, and the New Harmonies exhibit highlights just what that means, not just to the nation, but to our community. From exhibitions of antique instruments contributed by the Georgia National Fairgrounds to performances by talents heard from church choirs to great sound stages, it is a feast for the eyes, ears, and the heart of our area. Sheila Jones, one of the core organizers said of the exhibition, “Most of the events are free with the exception of two ticketed events at very modest pricing. We have scheduled master classes with performers like Joey Stuckey who will be teaching four separate classes and several Lunch and Learns at $7 each with the meal included.

Many places have contributed to making this event come together for the betterment of our community. The support and interest has been truly amazing!” There are twenty local exhibits included in the tour that consist of the efforts of many people who live or have lived in the middle Georgia area. Local musicians and talents have been invited to participate in the festivities of this unique show. The exhibit is scheduled to open to the public on September 8th at 4-5pm. That day Perry will also host Grammy nominated performer Robert McDuffie whose McDuffie String Ensemble will perform the timeless Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Those tickets will be sold at the Welcome Center and the Perry area Historical Museum at $10 advance and $15 at the door. The next day will be packed with acts scheduled to start at 2pm at the Perry Arts Center. It’s a joyous day to begin what will give birth to this six week long celebration of the music that makes us who we are in Middle Georgia, and gives a spotlight to the people whose talent uniquely defines our communities. This is what makes each stop on the New Harmonies tour so singular. Not only does it celebrate national history, it incorporates the local present and hopes to encourage the future of the communities it visits. Music is an ever evolving art that is inspired by its people. It belongs to all of us. The exhibition gives members of our community a chance to reinvigorate and participate in the sounds of our collective history and to introduce rich traditions to a new generation who, in the grand American spirit, will no doubt go on to make new traditions of their own. For more information and the complete schedule of events visit www.perrygacalendar.com or find NewHarmoniesPerry on Facebook for daily reminders of events. 1970 GEORIGA ROCK FESTIVAL TO BE COMMEMORATED WITH HISTORIC MARKER AND LONG-AWAITED PREVIEW OF FEATURE-LENGTH DOCUMENTARY FILM - THE 2ND ATLANTA INTERNATIONAL POP FESTIVAL TOOK PLACE RIGHT HERE IN BYRON, GA WITH OVER 250,000 HIPPIES DESCENDING ON THE ... CONSERVATIVE TOWN

EXCERPT FROM THE 11TH HOUR MACON, JULY 2010

One of the largest rock festivals of the 1960s era, the Second Atlanta International Pop Festival, which took place in Byron, GA, from July 3-5, 1970, will be commemorated in a series of upcoming events. The festival, organized by Atlanta rock promoter Alex Cooley, featured over thirty musical acts including Jimi Hendrix performing to the largest American audience of his career, and Macon’s Allman Brothers Band on their launching pad to national fame. An official Georgia Historical Society marker (see artist’s rendition below) will be unveiled on the festival site in Byron on September 15, and a ‘rough cut’ of the much-anticipated feature-length documentary film of the festival (see promo image below) will finally be given its first screenings by the director in both Macon and Atlanta on September 15 and 17 respectively. A commemorative symposium will also take place in Perry on the 14th. As the years have passed, both the festival, which was estimated by officials to have drawn several hundred

thousand young people to Byron, and its musical performances have taken on legendary status. This has been enhanced by long-running rumors that hours upon hours of remarkable, high-quality film existed of the three-day festival, which fans have anxiously dreamed of seeing. Many had given up hope. Steve Rash, director of the film, says, “This was the last great pop festival of the Sixties era. It was the moment of the end of American innocence, and it produced some of the best music of the century.” According to Rash, the 110-minute film is still a work-in-progress, but he adds, “It’s time to put the rumors to rest and show people some film.” The screenings will be private, by invitation only, with a limited number of additional seats available through local radio stations. They will be followed by a Q&A session with the director, who wants audience feedback to help him finish the editing, which began with a hundred hours of original film. The historical marker is sponsored by the Georgia Historical Society, the Byron Area Historical Society, the Georgia Allman Brothers Band Association, The Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House, and Hittin’ the Note. It will be unveiled at a special ceremony, open to the public at no charge, at the former festival site near the Middle Georgia Raceway, 4015 US Highway 41 North, in Byron, at 3 PM, Saturday, September 15. The Perry event, “Remember When - The Byron Pop Festival”, featuring music, memorabilia, the festival light show, and special guest speakers, will be held at the Perry Arts Center, 1121 Macon Rd., 7-10 PM, Friday, September 14 - admission $5. There were scores of rock festivals held in America during their original Sixties heyday, but surprisingly only three were professionally filmed and transformed into feature documentaries to convey what such festivals were like: “Monterey Pop”, “Woodstock”, and “Gimme Shelter”. Now there will be four, and the Byron film promises to reveal what the others couldn’t: the emergence of the hippie counterculture in the rural deep South. Director Steve Rash pioneered music-television in the 1970s with WATL-TV’s “The Now Explosion” and “The Music Connection” in Atlanta. He then moved into feature films, garnering three Academy Award nominations and one Oscar for “The Buddy Holly Story”, followed by three decades of helming films including “Can’t Buy Me Love”, “Queens Logic”, “Son-in-Law”, and sequels to “Bring It On”, “American Pie” and “Road Trip”.

September 14th @ 7pm -10pm / PAC ($5 at the door) “Remember When…The Byron Pop Festival” (Mature audiences only) This three-day music festival featured performances by Jimi Hendrix, Grand Funk Railroad, B.B. King, the Allman Brothers Band, US Kids, and others, changed the life and perspectives of many teenagers in the summer of 1970. Doors will open at 7pm. Live music, by the original members of the US Kids, will begin at 7:30pm. Performance will be followed by a screening of original film footage and light show display. Evening will conclude with a panel discussion/Q&A/stories from people that actually worked the event including the local police chief. Audience is encouraged to bring their Pop Festival memorabilia for show and tell. Wine & light hors d’oeuvres will be served.

THE WOODSTOCK OF THE SOUTH Officials and civil authorities in the county were admirably hospitable to this cultural invasion - hosing down the crowd when it got too hot, and tolerating the traffic. Until the 1996 Olympics this event is thought to be the largest gathering in Georgia history.

September 15th @ 3pm / Middle Ga. Raceway/4015 US Hwy 41 North, Byron, 2nd Atlanta International Pop Festival historical marker dedication. The Georgia Historical Society has awarded a Georgia Historical Marker for the 2nd Annual Atlanta International Pop Festival , held July 3-5, 1970 at the Middle Ga. Raceway in Byron,Ga. The dedication ceremony/unveiling begins at 3pm . The lead sponsor for the marker is Byron Area Historical Society.

You operate with a lot of highly conceptual abrupt tempo beats. Who or what inspired the progression of your sound? The rhythm and music in general isn't really lead by concepts so much as intuition and feeling. Maybe its that we enjoy taking ourselves places we've never been and tripping ourselves out, and a sudden change like that is an effective way to do it. But mostly we're just going with a feeling. Imagine music like this, no one really wants to work a desk job and do paper work their whole life, it gets boring, everyone needs a change from their everyday routine, so Xavii music for us, is that change that we may feel we have to make in order to keep sanity.

LIVE

What are some shows that you have played that really stood out to you? Bragg Jam in Macon has been great for us the past couple years and always gets us our largest Macon audience. Playing in Red Dog tribute for ABB fans and family was great. Also we have got to share stages with some amazing bands in the past year including Faun and a Pan Flute (atl), Manray (athens) Trioscapes (NC), Jealousy Mountain Duo (germany), and ASIWYFA (ireland).

LOCAL EXPERIMENTAL NOISE MACHINE, XAVII, RELEASES NEW ALBUM “Our Recent Futures”, the new album release from Xavii also brings what may be the future of sound to Macon live music fans. Don’t call it a jam, but these boys have it. To coin a phrase, Xavii rocks certain “math jazz” that leans toward highly conceptual, progressive sound that reminds this music enthusiast of the band American Football. Oftentimes in art rock and prog subgenres you find abrupt tempos and undercurrents that operate as lyrical themes throughout the composition of the work. I got with Xavii to talk about what inspires the melodies and the origins of the music. BY RACHEL HELIE

Walk me through a typical rehearsal? Usually the writing process varies. We don't have a certain set way that we put together our songs, but generally one or two of the members will have some basic song structure and some ideas and concepts. Then when we all get together for practice we will adjust the transitions and the ambiance and overall feeling and emotion. It takes a great deal of time for us to be satisfied with our product. We'll run through the material we know a few times and then usually go on to writing. That process always varies, and can be quite extensive. It usually entails a lot of yelling and smoke breaks. Where would you ideally be in the next five years. Give me your ultimate venue. Touring with some of the bands we really love or living in the studio. 40 Watt is an ideal stage for us. Maybe thats cliche or something but its a place where we have seen and fell in love with so much music and we can't think of a better place. All of us have a desire to travel outside of Georgia more and experience new and better venues.

Session Road @ Kippers and the band is certainly worth your time. Besides having a catchy name (who doesn't like to say Guv'nah?), the rootsy rock outfit makes catchy music. The Dirty Guv'nahs have released two albums, a self-titled and 'Youth in in Our Blood,' whose bluesy southern rock channels an amalgamation of bands, like Ryan Adams rockier sounds to The Steve Miller Band.

SATURDAY, 9/15

Homeless Hill @ The Hummingbird Born in the blazing heat of a Deep South summer in 2009, the award winning band Homeless Hill quickly developed a local following that outstripped their expectations. Dirty Guv’nahs @ Cox Capitol Theatre through airplay, iTunes, and live shows at venues and festivals throughout the Southeastern U.S. "Set It On Fire" has been described by newspapers as "11 tracks of gut-check rock n roll!"

Chapter 13 @ The Cavern Chapter 13’s original sound “goes for broke” as they say on their website. They’ve been developing a following throughout the middle GA area for a year now and this is a show you can’t miss!

n the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Cleveland had struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, Jason Howard. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, Jason Howard continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs, Liberty County police found JASON HOWARD Arrested 4/13/2009 the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Cleveland wrapped in tarps and buried in a 4 Cts Felony Murder barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later confirmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beaten first. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained: “Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I will not only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered, so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team.” For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon, in a camp he constructed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured on America’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Police found him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross country runner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is a page of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
