Selby is back with a behind-the-scenes look at the people and places that make the fashion world go round ■ ■ By To d d S e l by  ■  Fore word by Simon Doonan

T

he next instalment in the bestselling “Selby” series, Fashionable Selby explores the

kaleidoscopic world of fashion, featuring profiles

of today’s most interesting designers, stylists, haberdashers, models, shoemakers, and more. The subjects include a mix of the avant-garde, the traditional, the must-haves, and the totally unexpected. Chapters on individual artists bring readers inside their studios, workshops, and homes, and include Selby’s signature photographs and watercolours of not only the artists and their environments, but also the things that inspire them, the materials they use, their creative process, the people who work alongside them, and the final pieces. From the showroom of one of the Antwerp Six to the studios of Central St. Martins in London to a punk knitter in Brooklyn, Selby captures some of fashion’s biggest names, rising stars, and best-kept secrets. Todd Selby is an interiors, fashion, and portrait photographer and illustrator. His photographs can regularly be seen in Vogue, British Vogue, Le Monde’s M Magazine, D Magazine, and more. Simon Doonan is creative ambassador for Barneys New York and the author of The Asylum: A collage of couture reminiscences . . . and hysteria.

tylist, designer, photographer, and decorator: Maurice Renoma is celebrated in this 50th-anniver-

sary retrospective of a multifaceted career. As a fashion

designer, Renoma (b. 1940) was a pioneer of France’s own pop style, known as yé-yé. He revolutionised 1960s fashion

and went on to revolutionise photography. His suits and blazers bore the unmistakable mark of a man who broke old-school fashion rules and shattered all the stereotypes. He is a man who defined his own creative universe, modographie (fashion + photography), at the crossroads between fashion and photography. He retouches, composes, and plays with his images until they are completely unreal creations – and completely intriguing. This book evokes the world of Renoma and the personalities with whom he has surrounded himself. An icon of Parisian high society, he has mixed with, dressed, and photographed French stars such as Serge Gainsbourg and Catherine Deneuve, and everyone who is anyone shops at his famous boutique. In this book, Renoma’s creations and influences, as well as his thoroughly original work, are explored and pictured. Gabriel Bauret is an independent exhibition curator and author who specialises in photography. He regularly works with La Maison Européenne de la Photographie.

Host l of Anima Planet’s e s Treehou Masters

wants to put readers in trees – his motto is, “get ’er done, so you can

BE in a TREE.” His new book is a comprehensive source of inspiration and practical information about treehouse design and construction. To that end, he shares the basics of treehouse construction with his own recent projects

as case studies. Using photographs taken especially for this project along with diagrams, he covers the selection and care of trees, and explains the fundamentals of building treehouse platforms. To ignite the imagination, Nelson presents 27 treehouses in the United States, Europe, and Africa. The book will be indispensible to anyone who aspires to have a treehouse, from the armchair dreamer, to the amateur builder, to the professional contractor. Pete Nelson’s previous books for Abrams include Treehouses of the World (2004) and New Treehouses of the World (2009). The host of the Animal Planet show Treehouse Masters, Nelson runs Nelson Treehouse and Supply (NTS) outside of Seattle.

or over a year, the photographer and journalist

Gabriele Galimberti visited more than 50 countries and

9 781419 711749

created colourful images of boys and girls in their homes

and neighbourhoods with their most prized possessions: their toys. From Texas to India, Malawi to China, Iceland, Morocco, and Fiji, Galimberti recorded the spontaneous and natural joy that unites kids despite their diverse backgrounds. Whether the child owns a veritable fleet of miniature cars or a single stuffed monkey, the pride that Galimberti captures is moving, funny, and thought provoking. Gabriele Galimberti studied photography at Fondazione Studio Marangoni in Florence from 2000 to 2003. He then ran a professional photography laboratory and a photo gallery in Florence. His photos have appeared in international magazines including Newsweek, Le Monde, Geo, D–La Repubblica, lo Donna, Le Temps, Vanity Fair, and many others. Based in Florence, Italy, Galimberti is on the road all around the world, all year-round.

The natural beauty of her surroundings and the abundance of local produce serve as the inspiration for The Forest Feast, based on her popular blog. Most of the book’s 100 wholly vegetarian recipes call for only three or four ingredients and require very few steps, resulting in dishes that are fresh, wholesome, delicious, and stunning. Among the delightful recipes are aubergine tacos with brie and coriander, rosemary shortbread, and blackberry negroni. Vibrant photographs, complemented by Erin’s own fanciful watercolour illustrations and hand lettering, showcase the rustic simplicity of the dishes. Part cookbook, part art book, The Forest Feast will be as comfortable in the kitchen as on the coffee table. Photographer and artist Erin Gleeson lives in an idyllic cabin near San Francisco, California, where she paints beautiful watercolours, cooks from her CSA box, and writes her beloved food blog, The Forest Feast, and a weekly “Delish Dish” column for Better Homes and Gardens. he Venezuelan painter and sculptor Alejandro Otero (1921–1990) was one of the most significant artists

in the history of abstraction. Between 1955 and 1960, he

developed an extraordinary series of 75 paintings called Coloritmos (Colourhythms), one of his major contributions to the field of painting. Painted with Duco, a shiny industrial lacquer applied with a spray gun or roller, the Colourhythms are large-scale compositional modules executed on rectangular support structures. In these works, Otero succeeded in emphasising rhythm and colour over form; as a consequence of optical intensity, chromatic vibration, and the suggestion of rhythmic movement, the pictures seem to expand dynamically outward. This illuminating book, the first dedicated to Colourhythms, evaluates their place in Otero’s practice and in the context of international geometric abstraction. At McQuarrie Middle School, the war against the FunTime Menace – aka test prep – wages on. Our heroes have one battle under their belts, and they’ve even found a surprising ally in Jabba the Puppett. But to defeat the Dark Standardised Testing Forces they’re going to need an even bigger, even more surprising ally: Principal Rabbski. But with great forces – aka the school board – pushing her from above, will the gang’s former enemy don a finger puppet and join the Rebellion – or will her transformation to Empress Rabbski, Dark Lord of the Sith, be complete? With this timely episode in the blockbuster Origami Yoda series, Tom Angleberger demonstrates once again that his ‘grasp of middle-school emotions, humor and behavior is spot-on’ (Scripps Howard News Service). Framed for a stranger’s near-fatal overdose at a party, blackmailed into finding a mysterious flash drive everyone in school seems anxious to suppress, and pressured by his shady best friend to throw an upcoming match, high school soccer player Charlie Dixon is juggling more than his share of drama. Add in a broken heart and the drinking he’s been doing to soothe it, and he’s near the breaking point. In this fast-paced, layered mystery, Charlie spends a frantic week trying to clear his name, win back the girl of his dreams, and escape a past friendship that may be responsible for all his current problems. This book captures the tone and style of the best crime fiction while also telling a high-stakes story of peer pressure gone tragically awry. Sarah Skilton is the author of Bruised, which received a starred review from Publishers Weekly, and which Horn Book called ‘nuanced and honest.’

I did a mean thing. A very mean thing. I hate that I did it. But I did. This is worse than carrot juice on a cupcake. Or a wasp on my pillow. Or a dress that’s too tight at the neck. In the third instalment from the team who created Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie and Like Bug Juice on a Burger, Eleanor's relationship with her best friend, Pearl, experiences its first growing pains. When a glamorous new student transfers to school, at first Eleanor’s excited about the possibility of a new

To make matters worse, Eleanor’s been chosen for the lead role in the springtime musical, which means she has to sing a solo in front of the entire school! Time Out of Time, Book One: Beyond the Door

Slowly, the door swung inward. Timothy drew back into the shadows of the stairs and held his breath. A long face, followed by a long, spare frame, sidled into the living room. Beneath his shaggy black hair, the man’s face was as pale as moonlight, his eyes the startling green of new leaves. Timothy froze. The man grabbed at the air. The light in the hallway dimmed. As Timothy watched, the man stuffed his hand into a large pocket in his coat. The pocket glowed. When one pocket was full, he filled another.    Something rustled in the doorway. A girl came in, and with her came the smell of snow. Wherever she walked, she left footprints of silver-white dust on the blue carpet.    By now, the man’s pockets were full of light and the room was almost dark. Suddenly dogs howled in the yard. A large head thrust itself into the room, a man’s head with thick, curly brown hair and a disorderly beard. The rack of antlers that sprouted from his hair scraped across the door lintel. A silver hunting horn swung from his belt. “You’ve summoned the hunt early this year,” he said, in a rumbling voice. His eyes raked the shadows. Then he leaned forward and sniffed.    “There are rumors that the Dark is on the move again. Events are unfolding that require haste. The Filidh must discover his role and his strength. Cerridwyn assures me he is ready.”    The horned man nodded his great head, the antlers knocking a lamp shade sideways, clattering a picture to the floor. “Dark or Light, you know that the hunt takes no side in the battle. Who is the prey?”    At the word prey, Timothy f linched. Why did the man ask who instead of what?

Beyond the Door, the first in the Time Out of Time duet from Maureen Doyle McQuerry, weaves a compelling coming-of-age story with fantasy and mythology. With his love of learning and the game of Scrabble, Timothy James feels like the only person who understands him is his older sister, Sarah, and he’s fairly certain nothing interesting will ever happen to him. But one night, while his parents and sister are away, the door opens, and mythical creatures appear in his own living room! Soon, a mystery of unparalleled proportions begins to unfold, revealing an age-old battle of Light against Dark, and Timothy must embark on a quest to prevent the Dark from controlling the future and changing the past.

An excerpt from OT H E R B O U N D

In the world of the Dunelands, Amara was sleeping.    Striding through the Walgreens aisles, Nolan wished he could do the same—just curl up in bed, shut his eyes, and see nothing but the insides of his eyelids.    No: see nothing but the insides of Amara’s eyelids. He hadn’t seen his own in years.    If he hurried, he could buy the notebooks and get home before Amara woke up. He stopped by the office supplies, adjusted his backpack, and hunted the shelves for the right kind: hard-backed, easy to stack, and with thick enough paper that his ink wouldn’t bleed through when his pen paused at the same spot too long.    “Can I help you find anything?” A perky salesclerk appeared to his right.    Nolan offered a smile. Not quite his teacher-smile, but close—he didn’t visit stores often enough to have a salesclerk-smile. All these fluorescent lights and shoppers made him uneasy. If something happened in Amara’s world, he had nowhere here to hide.

Alice is the most rootin’, tootin’ cowgirl in all of Dallas . . . Pennsylvania. Each day she puts on her favourite boots and hat and sets off on her stick pony for school with a ‘Yippee ki-yay!’ Alice is used to being the only cowgirl around, until Lexis from Texas arrives at school one day. Lexis seems to be a real cowgirl, with her fancy hat, jingling spurs, and lasso tricks. Alice decides there’s only one way to know
