TURKEY SHOOT GOLF TOURNAMENT by Uel Kemp On Saturday, November 10, 36 golfers (divided into 18, two-person teams) played in Lake Arrowhead’s ninth annual Turkey Shoot Golf Tournament. This year’s event, which began with a 9:30 am shotgun, included three golfing formats, each played for six holes- alternate shot, best ball, and scramble. At the end of play, the 18 teams were placed into one of three flights according to their final 18-hole score. Prizes were awarded to the top three teams in each flight. The tournament was won by Brian Schell and Rex Wallace!

Friday evening October 12th was a time for cool ghouls or was it a cool evening for the ghouls; maybe a little of both. The event was a two-person 9 hole scramble with one member belonging to either the Lake Arrowhead Ladies Golf Association (LALGA) or the Lake Arrowhead Mens Golf Association (LAMGA). Twenty teams participated and had the opportunity to win a prize not only for finishing as one of the top 5 teams, but also for best costume. This was the last LALGA event of the season and a fun evening to remember as you can tell by the costumes. The format was handicapped with points awarded for scores from an Eagle to a Double Bogey. My partner Lana Chadwick and I were the only all-female team, we played with Joan and Bill Eberhardt, which meant Bill was the only guy lucky enough to play with all women. Yes, all you guys read that correctly! So maybe we didn’t win, but it seemed like even Bill had a good time. He certainly was very nice and supportive. As the sun started to set, the temperature dropped substantially and felt quite cool so, we were happy to arrive back at the Clubhouse to turn in our scorecards and warm up. The dining room was full of laughter and small talk as players not only discussed their game but also admired each other’s costumes. Chef John prepared yet one more fine buffet of wings, meatloaf, sautéed green beans, and scalloped potatoes. Somehow I managed to miss the dessert of macadamia nut crème pie. However, I sure did enjoy the fresh apple cobbler. The LALGA appreciates everything John, Elizabeth and all of the Clubhouse staff has done throughout the year in support of all our events.

club business It’s that time of year again to renew your Dry Storage Contract. The 2019 Dry Storage fee remains the same at $500.00. The due date is Tuesday, December 11th for contracts and full payment. If your payment and completed contract have not been received by the 26th, you will receive a $50 late fee. Dry Storage decals will be mailed in January upon receipt of full payment and completed contract. Boat registration information will be available in February, 2019. Forms may be downloaded from the website at lakearrowheadclub.net. All items in Dry Storage MUST display the current decal to continue using Lake Arrowhead Dry Storage. Your contract will not be renewed and your space will be given to the next person on the waiting list. To RENEW your DRY STORAGE contract for 2019: We must receive both a signed and completed contract with payment. We must receive payment of $500 per space before the due date to avoid a late fee. Remove your property before January 1, 2019. Return the key to the office (key deposits will be credited to your account). After December 31st, if we have not received a completed contract, full payment and your property is occupying or obstructing a dry storage space, you will be charged a per diem fee and the property may be towed at the owner’s expense. As a reminder, it is a violation of the covenants to park or store the following: boats, vehicles, trailers, campers, RVs, etc. on your property. Tennis players on your Christmas list? What might Santa have in mind for them? With my special LAPOA phone line, I was able to get through to one of his Elves-in-Chief, who made a few recommendations: He said: “Tennis Balls.” (Duh!) “How obvious,” I said. “Santa has to be more creative than that.” So, then he got serious and faxed me a list: • Cooling Towels/Scarves – The kind you soak in water and wear in the heat. • Cooling Hats – Ditto • Portable Spray Fans – Load with water and spritz away when it’s hot. • Vibration Dampers – Critical for reducing the risk of tendonitis. • Sweat Bands – Not all players love them, but often popular with the guys who want to channel Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors or Andre Agassi. • Wrist Bands - Not all players love these either, but they can be stylish as well as functional. • No-Sweat Hats – Hats that do not absorb and degrade from sweat. • Tennis Lessons – A good idea to somehow diplomatically check out with the player before committing. [Soleil and BridgeMill reportedly have pros glad to be engaged.]
• Racquet Restringing – Buy a gift card/voucher. Most players will be grateful for the thought behind this gift. [Soleil, BridgeMill and Dick’s Sporting Goods are reportedly nearby options.] One consideration here is the kind of string to be used. Costs can vary pretty substantially, relatively speaking. • Racquet Frame Protectors – Plastic pieces that fit on the frame to limit the effects of scraping shots. Usually, these products have to be professionally attached to the racquet and are often purchased as part of a restringing package deal. • Racquet Regripping – Basically, a ditto to restringing, but often a simultaneous purchase. • Racquet Grip Kits – Some players, like your author, feel comfortable regripping their own racquets. Restringing, however, requires special
equipment and a degree of real skill, usually acquired with tutored experience. • Grip Covers – There are some products that help preserve the grip from wear. • Tennis Glove(s) – Specifically designed to keep a racquet from slipping due to sweat, a pair can also be a cold weather friend. • Goggles – While protective eyewear has become de rigueur for other racquet sports like squash, handball and racquetball, it is much less frequently used in tennis, but sad statistics show that it’s not a bad idea. Again, diplomatic inquiry may be in order. • Protective Sunglasses – Less psychologically obtrusive perhaps, but same logic and surely practical when playing outdoors, as at Lake Arrowhead.
And, of course, there’s all the regular apparel – shorts, athletic socks, t-shirts, sweatpants, etc. And the host of gift cards that can support these purchases. Gift cards also work for tennis shoes and a new racquet, BUT it is unwise for those products to be delivered directly as the player needs to make the selection. The fax also mentioned that this list might well be used for pickleball players and other racquet sportsters, except, of course, that balls appropriate to those sports would be applicable. (Duh!) When the Spring sun melts the snow from the deck of SeaEagle, she will point her bow south toward the Chesapeake Bay to begin her voyage on America’s Great Loop. This is a continuous waterway that allows boaters to explore North America. There are several routes to choose from with the longer route including the Canadian Heritage Canal System. The core route of America’s Great Loop is the Atlantic Intercoastal, Great Lakes, and inland rivers of America’s Heartland. The shortest route is 5,250 miles and the longest is 6,400 miles. The trip can be made on a variety of vessels including both sail and power. The most popular are power boats from 28 to 34 feet with sailboats becoming increasingly popular due to their comfort, price, and fuel-efficient nature. The Great Loop has been completed on a variety of vessels including trawlers, sailboats, pontoon boats, runabouts, and even a jet ski! From the Chesapeake Bay area, SeaEagle will head north on the Great Loop this May and will hopefully complete the Great Lakes section by the end of October. This journey promises to provide the crew of SeaEagle with a variety of adventures that will be summarized in future articles. The crew intends to enjoy seeing North America from its vast array of waterways. Since the trip is more about the journey than the destination, the crew intends to maintain a slow pace and savor
the experiences. This will also include outreach/ mission work along the way as a means of connecting to the communities and helping others in need. Snow fell gently over the deck of SeaEagle as she nestled down for the winter in South West Harbor, Maine. After 28 years of plying the waters of the east coast and Caribbean, the sailing vessel SeaEagle was ready for a restful winter. She had recently completed a challenging summer crossing of the Gulf of Maine with swirling currents and dense fog. During the crossing, SeaEagle quickly grew accustomed to her new owners, John and JoAnne Poidevant. She was also thankful for the presence of a delightful and skilled couple, U.S. Coast Guard Captains Rob and Judy James. Both are accomplished sailors and certified American Sailing Association (ASA) Instructors. The new owners of SeaEagle were appreciative of Rob and Judy’s considerable knowledge and expertise! The challenging crossing of the Gulf of Maine (from Nova Scotia to Maine) reminded the new owners of an infamous television theme song from their childhood, “If not for the courage of the fearless crew, the SeaEagle would be lost!” The voyage turned out to be no “three-hour tour” and the adversity encountered by the crew provided a healthy respect for Mother Ocean! A special thanks are in order for Captain Rob James for his efforts in capturing the exploits of SeaEagle and her crew in a recent 3-part series of articles featured in the Lake Arrowhead Living Magazine. BEAT THE FREEZE
Freezing temperatures have hit our community fast and furious over the last few winters. This article will review how to prepare ourselves, our home and our vehicles for the coming winter months. A real danger that faces us all when being outside in freezing temperatures is hypothermia. It often strikes the elderly that have inadequate clothing, heating and food supplies, babies sleeping in cold bedrooms; individuals who are in the outdoors for long periods of time; individuals with certain medical conditions (diabetes) and alcohol consumers. Some of the key signs of hypothermia in an adult include: cool skin, shivering, exhaustion, confusion, memory loss, slurred speech and loss of fine motor skills (fumbling hands). Infants exhibit signs of hypothermia slightly different than adults thru bright red & cold skin combined with very low levels of energy. It is imperative that if any of these signs are observed in an individual that their temperature is taken right away. If their temperature is below 95 degrees Fahrenheit, 911 should be called immediately because they are experiencing a medical emergency. Some steps that can be taken IF the person is in a cold environment AND 911 services are delayed include: GENTLY removing person from cold environment, GENTLY removing wet clothing and GENTLY warming the center of the body first (layers of loose & dry sheets / blankets). It is important that extreme caution and gentle care is used when taking these steps, because sudden rewarming or sudden movement can cause life a threatening heart rhythm of ventricular fibrillation for the hypothermic person. (http://emergency.cdc.gov/disasters/winter/staysafe/ hypothermia.asp) Your home is the next place to prepare for the potential frosty weather coming to our community over the next several months. It is helpful to take a quick inventory to see what items you have in preparation for the freeze. Here are some inventory suggestions: source of drinking water; multiple blankets; extra pet food; non-perishable food items (freeze dried foods, energy bars, canned food items); light source (wind up flashlights, head lamps, flashlights, extra batteries to power them); heat source (extra gas or wood for fireplaces, instant heat packs and always REMEMBER FIRE SAFETY); communication sources (internet, cell phone, TV, NOAA weather radio, wind up radio to hear news when no power is available, wind up cell phone charger or generator to charge cell phone run computer). Ensure that all these items are in a central place in your home where everyone in the family knows their location and they are easy to access. The next place to prepare is your vehicle. Many of us commute often out of Lake Arrowhead for shopping, work or a variety of other reasons. We can easily find ourselves caught on the road away in severe conditions or needing to have make an
overnight stay away from home. It is important to ensure you always have a way to keep your cell phone fully charged when traveling in your vehicle. It is also helpful to always let a loved one know when you are leaving and your final destination when traveling by car. This can assist Fire, EMS and Police personnel in locating you in the event your vehicle goes missing. Please consider creating a car safety kit with these suggested items to better prepare you or your loved ones for for safe travels: Water Bottle with filter, Emergency Water, High Protein Snacks, Set of Jumper Cables, Portable Car Jump Starter That can jump start car and charge cell phone), Duck Tape, Headlamp, Flashlight, Extra Batteries, Waterproof matches, Pair of Sweat Pants or Thermal Underwear, Long Sleeve T- Shirt, Polar Fleece Jacket, Undergarments, Wool Socks, Knit Hat, Hand Warmers, Poncho, Towels, Regular Blanket, Emergency Blanket, Long Sleeve TShirt, Extra Medications or Supplements, Disposal Medical Gloves, First Aid Kit, Toilet Paper and Toiletries It is important to realize that when the roads are icy or snowy here in Lake Arrowhead the safest place for us all is in our homes. Keep an eye on weather reports to be proactive in your shopping / traveling / having children attend school if schools are not already closed. This way when the weather strikes your cabinets are fully stocked and your family is safely waiting in your home for the ice or snow to melt. Please keep travel to an absolute minimum during these winter storms so that you do not become injured or injure someone else on the treacherous roads. There are two treasures that most of us have to a small degree or in abundance; children and / or pets. Our homes can often present to children and pets as a real danger zone if we do not keep certain key safety principals in mind. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader some tips to keep their homes as a safe haven for children and pets. Children like to get into anything and everything throughout their development years. It is important with this in mind that cabinets have latches, stairs have gates and doorknobs have covers to keep curious hands from getting into these areas that may contain unsafe items in them that are not intended for children. These safety features must also be inspected on a regular basis to ensure they are still securing the structures they are intended to secure and have not lost their effectiveness. Medicine cabinets can be a life threating area in the home if not secured properly. Please ensure old prescriptions are discarded and any current medications are stored in cabinets out of children’s reach. Regardless of what ages or furry friends are in your home, it is important to have smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside each bedroom and outside sleeping areas to alert everyone in the home to fires. Calling 911 is an activity we know how to do, but often do not think about exactly what we would say in a true emergency. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with what vital information to share with the 911 dispatcher when activating the fire department or sheriff’s office to respond to your emergency.
LAPOA ELECTS OFFICERS
The most IMPORTANT piece of information you can provide to the dispatcher is the EXACT location of your emergency. What road is it on and what is the nearest cross street? If you are outdoors….what road are you by and what is the cross street? Or What is the nearest landmark or structure? Next, the dispatcher has a series of questions they need to ask you in order to send the correct resources your direction to resolve your 911 emergency. It is very important to let the dispatcher answer these questions in a clear & calm manner. Once they finish their series of questions you can provide them special instructions how to access the scene of the emergency (Example: have fire department enter basement door to house, house located in second Indian Ridge community headed towards clubhouse or house located in Indian Ridge community on Lake Arrowhead Drive just past South Cherokee & County Club Lane). Finally, stay on the phone with the dispatcher until they provide you other instructions regarding ending the call. This will assist the dispatcher in communicating the most current information about your emergency to the responding fire and/or sheriff offices’ crews that are in route to assist you or your loved ones. Thank you for following these suggestions and helping the 911 dispatchers assist you or your loved ones more effectively in your time of need.

In accord with LAPOA’s By-laws the Board of Directors elected officers for the coming year and agreed on Committee Liaisons for the coming year as well. Other than the change in the Treasury due to the retirement from the Board of Gary Charles (who did a fine job) all other officers were re-elected. However, an additional Treasury post – 2nd Asst. Treasurer - was added to be sure there was always a Treasury Officer on site. All of us on the Board appreciate the vote of confidence implicit in our election to the Board and recognize the responsibility inherent in these Offices. We are very appreciative of the help from, and thank, all our Chairs and Members of our Committees. With the welcome cooperation of the Declarant, its affiliates and HMS Golf, we are looking forward to a year of progress and achievement in Lake Arrowhead. Young Daniel is told this on his tenth birthday when his father takes him to a Barcelona bookshop in 1945 to select a book. It is not just any ordinary bookshop: it is the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, a depository for those books “no longer remembered by anyone, books that are lost in time waiting for the day when they will reach a new reader’s hands.” Daniel chooses The Shadow of the Wind by Julian Carax, and, like his father predicts, the story stays alive in him, sending him on a quest to uncover more writings by the mysterious author and to discover why a mysterious man who appears the reincarnation of the devil (his face a mask of black scarred skin with no nose, lips or eyelids) seeks to destroy every last copy. Part gothic mystery, part coming of age, part tawdry love story, part snapshot on life in Spain during Franco’s rule – Zafon’s book has as many twists as the bookstore labyrinth where the story begins. Five years after first reading The Shadow of the Wind, Daniel tracks down different individuals who were connected to Carax before his disappearance, and supposed death, at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. Each person – from Carax’s high school mates to his first love to his publisher and many others – give Daniel their own flawed version of the author’s life story. Expect to be confused as red herrings and ‘double entendres’ abound. Serving as the equivalent of Sancho Panza on Daniel’s quixotic quest is Fermin Romero de Torres, a former Republican agent now a homeless beggar whose knowledge of women, wine and the streets of Barcelona enable the pair to draw closer to answers. Meanwhile, Daniel’s own life takes on an eerie parallel to Carax’s story, especially when his investigation draws the attention of Fermin – the most sadistic and dogged police officer since Hugo’s Inspector Javert in Les Miserables.

At more than 500 pages, expect to find allusions to other stories of length written by the likes of Dickens, Eco, Twain, Cervantes, and Bronte. In fact, part of the fun of reading The Shadow of the Wind is to recall the characters and plots of these other stories. And if the novel really hooks you, read the other two books in the series – The Angel’s Game and The Prisoner of Heaven. But don’t expect to see any of these at the local cinema. Zafon swears he will not sell the rights for movie adaptations. “A book is a mirror that offers us only what we already carry inside us,” Daniel learns. “When we read, we do it with our hearts and mind.” My Wine Recommendation Such a complex story demands a wine equal to the task. When considering a Spanish wine, look no further than Bodegas Beronia Rioja Reserva 2010. Aged in French oak barrels, it has flavors of black fruits, spices, especially vanilla, and chocolate. Its long dry finish will keep you sipping throughout your read and into your next book club discussion. $18. community interest BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE!! Oh yes…another wonderful fall and winter is upon us. And that first time you grab a sweatshirt or an old soft sweater…oh yes,,,feels so good! But there are some who need anything they can find for warmth. So it’s time to give and give! Shepherd’s Hook has donated 60 hat and scarf sets in October to the nearest shelter we have – which is the Good Neighbor Shelter in Cartersville. We have no shelter in all of Cherokee County! Good Neighbor is home to residents – both men and women. All are drug and alcohol free and have jobs but because they are homeless, they are struggling. If you have household goods and wondering if someone other than Goodwill or Salvation Army needs them, go onto their website to see what they need to help these people build new lives – furniture and household. But now they have something new to wear from our community. Cherokee Violence Center sponsors transition housing for 72 families that have been through abusive situations in their lives. Shepherd’s Hook donated 72 hat and scarf sets for these residents and they are receiving them the week of Thanksgiving. Chemo hats were delivered to the Infusion Center at Northside Cancer. went to Northside Cherokee ICU and the baby department. They also went to the HOPE Center and to the Cherokee Health Department. Those little ones just keep on coming! The final giving will be during Christmas to both the Canton and Bryan nursing homes, some identified needy children at RM Moore and last, the Babies in Red for the American Heart Association. WE WILL BE WELL OVER 1,500 ARTICLES GIVEN IN 2018!!!! That’s right – it’s been an incredible year for these community members who have knit, loomed or crocheted these beautiful articles for our troops, our veterans and our community!! Many thanks and just plain heart tugs to everyone for the hours they’ve put in.
