GOLF NEWS 2019 SUPER BOWL SCRAMBLE

On January 26, a team from Lake Arrowhead won this year’s Super Bowl Scramble. While a typical 4-person scramble golf tournament, scoring for this event was based on a football analogy. For example, a bogey (safety) was worth negative 2 points, a par (field goal) was worth 3 points, a birdie (touchdown) was worth 6 points, and an eagle (touchdown and 2 point conversion) was worth 8 points. In addition, a team could earn one or two extra points for each birdie by sinking either a short or long putt. Using this format the winning team scored 102 points. Overall, 11 teams (44 golfers) competed in the tournament and the Club awarded prizes to the first 2 teams in 2 flights. Each 1st Flight winning team member received a football trophy and pro-shop gift certificate. Other winners received pro-shop gift certificates. The winners are shown in the pictures below. First Flight: 1st Place: Brian Schell, Dave Baggerly, Curt McKinney, and Chris Benway (102 points) 2nd Place: James Hatcher, Mel Standley, Eddy Woody, and Brad Sweetwood (98 points)

ANGEL HOUSE 2019

Attention Lake Arrowhead, friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances! The LALGA and LAMGA will be hosting the 7th Annual Angel House Charity Golf Tournament May 4th at our Highlands Course. You may wonder, “What is Angel House?” and “Why is it our charity?” The North Georgia Angel House Inc. is a licensed Child Caring Institute located at 2260 Sam Nelson Road. Their mission is simple. Giving Girls Roots. Giving Girls Wings. It is home to 19 young ladies ages 12-21 where they are given the essential needs that a stable home would provide, relieving the stress of instability that has been present in their lives. This gives them roots in a community. Wings on the other hand gives the girls the tools necessary to leave care. Here the girls learn job readiness skills and form positive relationships by way of activities with their peers and their community. Angel House is state funded but their daily per-diem falls short by $21.00 per day per child. That is where our Charity Event, along with other fund-raising

organizations in our community help in covering this gap. Over the past six years our Charity Golf Tournament donation has grown from $4000 to $26,000. The funds from the 2018 event were used to provide double pane windows for their home. Past donations were used for other much needed improvements to the home. They hope to use 2019 donations for a new roof. So here’s how you can help! Participate in one or more of the following for our Tournament. CORPORATE SPONSOR: $600 a four person team, which includes greens and cart fees, tee gifts, lunch, a banner with your name or the name of your business and the opportunity to introduce your business at the luncheon and the opportunity to win prizes. HOLE SPONSOR: $100 Your name or the name of your business on a tee box sign the day of the tournament. PLAY IN THE TOURNAMENT: $90.00 per person which includes greens and cart fees, tee gift, lunch and the opportunity to win prizes. You do not need a team nor do you need to be a pro golfer to play. Remember it’s for charity and for fun! DONATE: Cash donations are greatly appreciated! However, we also need donations for the silent auction and raffle. Here are a few suggestions, gift cards from any retail business such as restaurants, spas, gyms, salons, stores. Gift baskets, use your imagination and create a beautiful basket of non-perishable items. I’m sure your neighbors will be awed by your amazing talents. Art work, dinner and a boat ride or …. We appreciate all the creative ideas and hard work people “put into” donations.

There are always many wonderful donations so come out and place your bid. In addition, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always fun to see how much money they made from your donation. Great feeling to know how much you helped! VOLUNTEER: If you are not able to play we always need volunteers to help during the tournament. SECURITY UPDATE More folks are moving into Lake Arrowhead which means more pedestrian traffic. Please drive 25 mph or less to keep everyone safe in our community. Weather patterns are constantly changing so please be prepared for the rapidly changing situations. Thunderstorms often bring trees down, and can flood the roads so this is even the more reason to slow down. The Lake Arrowhead phone system will have periodic messages during winter storms about road conditions- call 770.721.7900 x 9. We will also communicate on the LAYCC Facebook page (facebook. com/lakearrowheadclub) and our emergency management eblast system. We are happy to report our crime numbers are still the lowest around Cherokee County. Stay vigilant and report anything suspicious. If your gate swipe card or clicker stops working please contact the Lake Arrowhead Admin Office. When using the gate call box remind your visitors to give the system several seconds (10-15) to connect the call.

SPORTS & FITNESS OLD TENNIS STUFF… OF VALUE!(?) by Maury Nunes It seems to be true that over time, avid tennis players, like most athletes in different sports, tend to accumulate various accoutrements of the game and there’s always the question of whether to dispose of that old stuff. We may hang on to an old racquet or an old hat for sentimental reasons, but I began to wonder if some of this stuff might have big value as an antique? So, I did some research on the internet. Question #1 has to be when does an athletic item go from being just “old stuff ” (or even “old junk”) to becoming an antique or, better yet, “a valuable antique”? According to Wikipedia.org, an antique should be at least 100 years old, though some items, like automobiles, are exempt from that rule. 100 years is not an encouraging start for my hope that my old stuff is going to become a source of great wealth, especially as old tennis racquets didn’t seem to be exempt from the 100-year standard.

However, now there’s apparently a movement toward defining “collectibles” which suggests that old stuff can accrete value rather than continue to depreciate, and that threshold is set at 50 years. Much better, as I’ve got some stuff that could qualify! So how much money is locked up in those valuable assets handing around in my attic or buried in a closet? On the one hand, eBay, that venerable site, isn’t exactly indicating that I don’t have to worry about the market value of my 401(k) declining. A bunch of racquets that were billed as “antique” or “vintage” were offered below $50. On the other hand, there was a racquet offered for $15,000 from 1876. That’s 120 years old, so I guess I could think about including this stuff in my Will, for which, no doubt, I’m sure my grandchildren will be suitably grateful, especially when they cash in during their years as seniors. Then I found a site that offered antique athletic equipment of quite a few sports; antiqueathlete.com. I couldn’t resist taking a look at vintage bobbleheads, in which there seemed to be a lively market. Who knew?

COMMUNITY INTEREST DEER IN LAKE ARROWHEAD There are numerous benefits to living in Lake Arrowhead. One of the most wondrous is the extraordinary abundance of natural resources and wildlife. Our lakes, forests, creeks and streams, mountain views, a wide variety of birds, foxes, squirrels, deer and, yes, even coyotes enhance our life in this community. However, that very abundance is a cause for concern with the growing deer population. The increased number of deer in Lake Arrowhead is obvious and negatively impacting many aspects of the human community as well as the deer community. For example, if you’ve recently walked any of the trails through the woods you will have noticed the significant lack of understory growth (the vegetation layer beneath the main forest canopy) primarily due to deer overpopulation feeding there. The understory also provides food and habitat for smaller wildlife and birds that is now unavailable forcing those species to move to other places. The diminished understory is an unfortunate factor causing deer to leave the forested areas seeking substitute food. They’re frequenting yards and public areas, destroying landscaping and even eating “deer-resistant” plants. In Georgia, the odds of having a deer-caused crash were one in 131 in 2017 (see online Patch article, 10/10/2018). Driving through Lake Arrowhead, you are very likely to encounter deer as they venture closer to roads to feed and create road hazards, so can expect more traffic incidents caused by deer than have already occurred, and indeed they are recorded as increasing. Too many and more deer means the health of the herd will decrease. With limited food sources deer become malnourished and more susceptible to disease. Human feeding of the deer adds to the problem because it encourages more deer to visit the immediate area. It also throws the ecology out of balance. White-tail deer are well adapted to Winter survival. They “bulk-up” adding

by Maury Nunes fat layers during Summer and Fall, but are normally more sedentary n Winter using up that stored fat. Their Winter digestive systems aren’t equipped to handle excess food, so it’s best to leave nature to balance itself, not to mention protecting neighbor plantings from being exposed to deer temptation. Note, too, that deer often harbor deer ticks, which unfortunately also endanger humans with Lyme Disease among others. While few of us are likely to get close enough to a deer to pick up a tick, infections occur (like that of my own Aunt) of people when a tick up in an encounter between deer and a pet dog transfers to the human. Georgia is seeing an increase in deer. According to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources there were an estimated 1.35 million deer in Georgia in 2017, up from 1.27 million in 2016. 80,000 more deer is a huge 6+% increase in a single year. At that rate, populations double every 12 years. Here in Lake Arrowhead there are few natural predators to the deer population, so the rate of increase may well be greater. Foxes are a small risk to fawns. Coyotes are the only major threat to deer, but the coyote population is also a concern for our pets. As deer are tempted into inhabited areas more frequently (e.g. by human feeding) the risk of coyotes following grows. We can all take a few precautions to protect and enjoy our wildlife here in Lake Arrowhead: • DON’T FEED THE DEER. You do them a disservice and create traffic and disease hazards for yourself and others. • LOOK OUT FOR DEER WHEN DRIVING IN LAKE ARROWHEAD, especially at night. Deer travel in herds. Where you see one, there will likely be more. • IF YOUR PETS (ESPECIALLY DOGS) ARE OUT WHEN DEER ARE OR HAVE BEEN FORAGING NEARBY, CHECK CAREFULLY FOR TICKS.

We often hear about the value of having fire extinguishers in our homes, cars or boats. How much thought is given to the questions of type, placement, size, actual use of fire extinguishers and replacement? The purpose of this article is to answer these questions so that you the reader can be better informed regarding fire extinguishers. But FIRST, in dealing with any fire situation, always ask yourself this question before attempting to put out the fire: Has 911 been called? (make sure you have) & Can I escape quickly and safely if I attempt to extinguish this fire? We will first discuss the different classes of fire extinguishers, which consist of types A, B, C, D and K. Type A class fires involve ordinary combustible items; such as wood, paper, plastic, rubber and cloth. Type B class fires involve flammable / combustible liquids. Type C class fires involve energized electrical equipment. Type D class fires involve combustible metals. Finally, Type K involves unsaturated cooking oils that are used in cooking appliances typically found in commercial kitchens. The most common type of fire extinguisher residents will encounter is the Type ABC dry chemical combination. This type of fire extinguisher combines 3 classes and covers the most common type of fires residents will encounter. They also work well for small car or boat fires. The next part of our discussion centers on selecting the appropriate placement of fire extinguishers and size. The key in home fire safety is having one larger than 5lbs and placing it in multiple areas throughout your home. It is best to have them readily accessible to potential fire areas such as your kitchen and fireplace. Also, they can save a life if placed close to the main exit points of the house. In these areas the fire extinguisher can be used to reduce the size of a fire blocking the exit long enough for people to escape the burning structure. The last question in our discussion of fire extinguishers is how do we use them? Remember, the acronym PASS when thinking about how to use the fire extinguishers that have been placed strategically in your home.

S – Squeeze the handles together (this releases the chemical agent inside the extinguisher) S – Sweep the nozzle back and cover (covering the burning material and fire) Fire extinguishers should be visibly checked monthly for any dents, chips or signs of corrosion and to ensure the pressure level are in the green section on the gauge. If your fire extinguisher is showing a reduced charge or if it is beyond the recommend life span of 10 years you can safely discard it with your trash by following the steps below: 1- Move to an outside area away from cars, other property and vegetation. The agents used are harmless, but can be irritating if inhaled and can result in a dust-like coating on items. 2- Pull pin on extinguisher 3- Turn extinguisher upside down. (this will minimize the amount of fire-fighting agent discharged) 4- Face extinguisher away from yourself into an open area 5- Squeeze handle and hold until discharge stops. It is now safe to dispose of the fire extinguisher with your regular refuse. This is the time of year that we reflect on both the positive and negative things that occurred in the last twelve months. It is the time for New Year resolutions and renewed passion to accomplish them. The purpose of this article is to get the reader to include on their New Year resolution list things that will keep their family warm and well during the New Year. PAGE 26 | FEBRUARY / MARCH 2019

COMMUNITY INTEREST I would like to challenge the reader to make preparedness one of your New Year resolutions. People often look at the word preparedness and think that it is too large of a project to jump into. They think it will take too much time and too much money to really get their family equipped for a disaster. This article will walk the reader thru some simple and economical steps to get your family headed down the path of being prepared. The first place to start is thinking about the members of your family and what their daily needs include. Such things as food, water, warmth, medications, toilet facilities and the ability to shower / bathe come to mind. Take a look at your pantry and ensure it is prepared in case you are stuck in your home due to impassible roads from severe Winter weather here in Lake Arrowhead. Consider stocking up on canned items such as vegetables, soup, noodles, pasta sauces and tuna to prepare for those events when you are blocked from reaching the supermarket for several days. It is also important to plan ahead regarding the purchase of any dairy products that you consume regularly to ensure you do not find yourself short on these products. Another good item to have in your pantry, that can be stored safely for several years, are easy to prepare meals that only require boiling water to assemble such as the ones at (www.mountainhouse. com or https://4patriots.com/) . It is nice to have a hot meal when the temperatures are cold outside. It is a good idea to talk with your doctors and local pharmacists about stocking up on vital medications that your family utilizes so that if you are stranded in your home for an extended period of time your family will have the vital medications they need. Do not forget your furry friends when checking the readiness of your pantry. The last thing you want is for your pet to run out of food when for whatever reason you cannot make it to the store to restock their supply. Thinking about stocking your pantry with canned and dry pet foods will keep your furry friends smiling instead of crying. The humane society has a good article about preparing your pet in general for both natural and everyday emergencies (http://www. humanesociety.org/issues/animal_rescue/tips/pets-disaster. html). The second place to think about is an alternate way to safely heat your home and keep your family warm. It is essential to get your chimney inspected (https://www.csia.org/faq.html) prior to using it as a heat source and stock up on blankets / thermal clothing. Ensure you have an adequate number of fire extinguishers in your home and properly placed. The loss of electric will quickly negatively affect your home’s tap / shower water and toilet / sewer availability. You want to ensure your family’s home to prepared with an alternative drinkable water source. Some examples of this are stocking up on bottled water or purchasing a gravity fed water purification system such as Berkey water filters (www. berkeyfilters.com) which can filter pretty much any type of water source. There is a store called True Prep (www.truprep. com) that has a location in the Metro Atlanta area which

can supply your family with the berkey filters, alternative toilet resources and other items to prepare your family being trapped in your home for an extended period of time. It is also important to realize that if we lose power in Lake Arrowhead there is a strong possibility the water / sewer plant could lose enough pressure in the system that the sewer system will not be effective. Careful thought needs to be given in this situation to utilizing the toilets and your family’s hygiene. The reality is that for every 60 seconds that passes after someone is in cardiac arrest (not breathing / heart is no longer pumping normally) their probability of surviving drops 10%. After 4 minutes of cardiac arrest brain damage starts to occur and after 10 minutes the chances of survival are extremely poor. A bystander that provides high quality CPR can double or even triple the rate of survival for these individuals. Learn How to SAVE A LIFE. Get CPR certified or renew your current Heartsaver CPR Certification in a community CPR class hosted by the Lake Arrowhead Fire and Rescue Volunteers. Off Season Pontoon Boating Skills Verification Workshop On Wednesday, February 13th, from 6:30 to 8:00pm, the KYSC Boat House will be hosting a Workshop at The Highlands Grill. We will cover all the legal paperwork and Lake Arrowhead nautical rules of the road. After this workshop, all that's left is for us to observe your docking skills (which is not a lesson; it is assumed that you already have previously skippered a pontoon boat). This “off season” workshop will greatly speed our skills verification session that is required by our insurance before your first time pontoon rental. COMMUNITY INTEREST MAKING CARDS IS FUN by Tommy C. Simmons, WAC Co-Treasurer A hands-on card-making workshop on Jan. 9 kicked off Lake Arrowhead’s Women’s Activity Club 2019 programs. The workshop was lead by Barb May, Gayle Matson, Patti Adams and Jean Nigro, who set up four workstations in Lake Arrowhead’s clubhouse dining room. At each station, all the supplies were available for making a featured note card plus instruction from the table leader on how to make the card. “Making cards is fun,” was the exclamation heard many times during the activity. Members of the Women’s Activity Club (WAC) made at least four cards and those who had experience in card design and construction completed more for their card collections.

by Tommy C. Simmons, an enthusiastic gardener During the holidays, I cut a couple of branches of Southern Bayberry, also known as Southern Wax Myrtle, to fill out a floral arrangement. The evergreen grows wild along many of Lake Arrowhead’s roads and can also be purchased at a landscape garden supply. Southern Bayberry has a pleasant herbal fragrance. According to gardening books, the tree’s gray berries that mature in fall and remain on the tree through early winter can be boiled to create a waxy substance used in making bayberry candles. The tree reaches a maximum height of 30 feet and can be pruned to exhibit several twisty trunks with foliage at the top. The tree likes moist soil along stream banks and road drainage ditches. But like a match tossed into a dry forest, the perfect life in Shaker Heights is about to ignite. A close friend of Mrs. Richardson wants to adopt a Chinese baby abandoned at a fire station. And what a firestorm this begins. A physical fire begins and ends the novel, but, like the title states, little fires fueled by passion are burning within all the characters. Mrs. Richardson sees Mia’s nomadic lifestyle as a threat to her carefully controlled, domesticated life. “Rules exist for a reason,” she states. “If you follow them, you would succeed; if you didn’t, you might burn the world to the ground.” Oldest daughter Lexie is ready to burst out of Shaker Heights together with her boyfriend, Brian. Trip embarks on a relationship that is far more passionate than

Located in Sandusky on Lake Erie between Cleveland and Toledo, the estate has been a leader in bottling regional wines and establishing European varieties in the East. Their 2011 Estate Bottled Gewurztraminer, Isle St. George, won them a Gold Medal from the Beverage Tasting Institute. With a distinctive yellow straw color, the wine is flavorful from start to finish.
