aster is almost here already – here’s hoping for some good weather so we can get out and about during the holidays. This month we’ve been looking into the story behind the all-important feeder canal which runs through “our patch” here in Livingston and Mid Calder, and keeps the Union Canal topped up and running smoothly. Awareness of dementia is gradually being raised in society in general and is very much at the forefront with the recent passing of Sir Terry Pratchett. There are nine dementia cafes in West Lothian including two in Livingston – see the article on pages 54-55 for more information. With a host of other local community, event and services information, we hope you find the magazine informative and entertaining. If you’ve got something interesting and different going on that you’d like to share with the local community, do get in touch and we may be able to feature your story in an upcoming issue.

As you’re enjoying a walk, cycle or boat trip along the Union Canal, you may not be aware that its serene surface level is maintained only by a feat of engineering which keeps it topped up to the tune of an average 2 million gallons of water per day... The civil engineers who built the Union Canal (which opened in 1822 after five years of construction) knew that it would have to be continually replenished. So in 1818 began one of the most marvellous feats of engineering – the construction of the main feeder for the Union Canal on its original 32 mile stretch. A brilliant Scottish civil engineer from Dumfries, James Bruce Jardine - who was also a mathematician, geologist and the first person to determine mean sea level - was appointed to construct and enlarge the then very small Cobbinshaw Loch which lies between Carnwath and West Calder. The loch was the ideal spot, situated in a vast watershed approx 879ft above sea level. The loch would eventually cover a 310 acre site and become the reservoir for the Canal Feeder via the Bog Burn and Murieston Water. The feeder has been largely underestimated and is taken for granted as the much smaller sister of the mighty Union Canal. To get an idea of how important it is I spoke to Ronnie Russack, former owner of the Bridge Inn at Ratho and recipient of an MBE in recognition of his role in the rebirth of the Union Canal as a leisure waterway. He told me that one morning when he came in to work at the Bridge Inn, his canal boats were high and dry; it was obvious that the level of the canal had seriously dropped overnight, and this was not liable to happen unless something really unusual had occurred. They discovered that the bank had fallen into the feeder, blocking it on the stretch above Almondell Country Park before it runs into the Lin’s

8

Start of the feeder where it leaves the Almond at the Scaler weir, East Calde Mill Aqueduct and preventing it from flowing into the canal. When the bank was repaired and the feeder cleared, the canal was duly replenished and they were back in business again. My grandfather used to tell me that when he was a young man he and other young lads from East Calder swam in the feeder, but by around 1950 it was quite badly silted up. In its heyday, the sluices were looked after and it was kept free of weeds and silt as it was essential to the functioning of the canal with its cargoes of coal into Edinburgh from Scotland’s coalfields. Now the canal has been opened up for leisure, the feeder is once again being maintained by Scottish Canals under the auspices of the Scottish Government. The famous Scottish engineer Hugh Baird was appointed to oversee the construction of the feeder itself. A large weir was built at Mid Calder, and a smaller weir (known to locals as the Scaler) down river at East Calder where the feeder starts its runoff from the River Almond. The feeder flows along the bottom of the hill under a small stone bridge with a sluice gate then under the railway viaduct, which was built much later in 1885. (The railway viaduct is 23 metres high and has nine segmented arches. It was under threat of being demolished a good few years ago but fortunately after much protest it was saved and is a wonderful walkway through the park with marvellous views of Almondell). From here the

feeder has a short stretch until it reaches the Iron Bridge Aqueduct.

Iron Bridge Aquaduct This beautiful green cast iron bridge was based on the design of one of Shropshire’s most famous landmarks, the bridge that spans the Ironbridge Gorge. The aqueduct carries the feeder over the Almond at a height of 6 metres above the river in a cast iron trough 1.8m wide and 1m deep. Before the solid walkway was constructed, the original walkway was constructed of large sections of cast iron mesh bolted together, and when walking across you could see the feeder running underneath. After leaving the aqueduct the feeder runs for a short distance until it reaches a spot near the Nasmyth Bridge on the East Calder side of the river where it disappears into the hillside in a series of tunnels until it reaches its destination – the Union Canal at Lin’s Mill Aqueduct. dinosaur There is a the in t in footpr eath the strata ben Aqueduct Lin’s Mill ly been on n ca at th e River th en h w seen ly low. al re is d Almon

This quite magnificent aqueduct was also built by Hugh Baird in collusion with another great Scottish civil engineer, Thomas Telford. It is said that Thomas Telford came to inspect it. Its five magnificent arches carry the canal over the river in a 128 metre long cast iron trough. It is the fifth largest aqueduct in Scotland, stands 23 metres above the River Almond and when the water in the canal gets too high the main sluice gate is opened and the water pours back into the river in a most beautiful cascade. In the heyday of the canal, parties would sail from Edinburgh to the aqueduct where the main sluice would be opened for their entertainment. Ronnie Russack told me that he also was also given permission in the past to open the large sluice for his customers when they reached the aqueduct on his restaurant canal boats. The canal and its feeder were built by navvies mainly Highlanders who had to abandon their crofts during the clearances, and the Irish who were fleeing the hardship of their own country. It was hard, back breaking work. The length of the feeder from the weir at the Scaler to Lin’s Mill Aqueduct is three miles. The river dips by approximately 50 metres over this distance, so the design of the feeder maintains the water at sufficient height to allow it to feed into the canal.

Ronnie Russack is running School Educational Cruises on the Union Canal at Easter at the Helix Park near Falkirk. The cruise will take children from the Reception area past the Kelpies and back. The cruise is free of charge - any schools interested should get in touch with Ronnie on 07801 430781. Also Kelpie tours on the Canal starting April 2015, £2.50 for children - £5.00 for adults, for details call Ronnie Russack on 07801 430781.

Fabulously fun, pay-as-you-go exercise class combining dance-based cardio, functional strength and mobility training Be inspired, enjoy the movement!

Self compassion when facing difficulty By TINA GILBERT

Life is tough and despite our best intentions things go wrong. No matter how hard we try to avoid emotional pain / challenge, we find we just can’t, it follows us everywhere. How do we react when things go wrong? Do we become self critical; what’s wrong with me, why can’t I cope, why me? Do we fight against it, creating tension in our body that we carry around? Do we become distracted by negative thoughts creating lowered mood? What we resist however, persists; pain x resistance = suffering. How would it be to tackle it differently? Perhaps bear witness to our pain and greet our own inner world with kindness instead of blaming, criticising and trying to fix our normal habits. How would it feel to say “yes” to how you are feeling instead of fighting it and resisting or pushing the feelings away? turning towards and opening to how we really are in the moment. Just as you would support a friend in a challenging situation, turning towards yourself with a kinder attitude, a warmer tone of voice. Maybe saying to yourself a few kind words of acknowledgement, just as you would a friend. When we do this the heart begins to soften, we stop trying to feel better and discover a warmth and openness towards ourselves in challenging moments. Try words of self kindness next time you experience difficulty; it will feel different and nourishing. Tina lives in Livingston and teaches yoga and meditation. Livingston Cricket Club by Iain Martin

Cricket in Scotland? I didn’t know we played the game here! Well we do and we are fortunate that within the town there is a thriving cricket club, unsurprisingly, called Livingston Cricket Club. Now based in Murieston Valley, having journeyed around the town from Deans High School to Bangour Hospital, the club is thriving. On the field we operate senior teams in the East of Scotland leagues, as well as midweek and Sunday Cup matches and friendlies. We take our responsibility to the future seriously, and have an active and burgeoning junior section where children of all ages, genders and race can mix and play fun games. We operate a fun for all policy at the club and we ensure that, although we are based in south Livingston, we cover the whole town with sessions throughout winter at Deans Community High School. In the summer a week long summer camp is run. And it’s more than just cricket. The club is an integral part of the local community the clubhouse is used as a meeting area by other organisations including Livingston Round Table, the local Murieston Environment Group as well as the West Lothian

Triathlon club. A vibrant social scene exists with many events that are building up community and ‘townwide’ appreciation, including our Fireworks Night, Gala Day and in conjunction with LRT the Livingston Beer Festival. Club Chairman Iain Murdoch states “We have tried hard over the last few years to ensure that we invest in the club, and that is not just in terms of playing facilities, but in time and money into areas that make a difference. We want to give the children of Livingston the chance to play sport in a safe, fun and friendly environment. We are continually surprised as to how the kids that come along take to the sessions and that makes it so much fun for our coaches as well. The club also work hand in hand with the West Lothian Sports Development Team as well as the governing body at Cricket Scotland. We are fortunate to be looked on favourably by both organisations as they recognise the hard work we are putting in and ambition that we have as a club and that we want to progress to being the premier cricket club in West Lothian”. The club is going places. Both on and off the field. They recognised that to be successful, the infrastructure of the club needs to be in place and that sometimes you need to do a lot more than throw money at the problem. But most importantly they recognise that people make a club and how you treat those people is critical. At LCC they put people first, and that’s why the club will grow on and off the field. For further details go to the club’s website: www.livingstoncricketclub.co.uk

beauty EVENT

at the Toning and Beauty Clinic

This year we wanted to do something a little different rather than hosting an event on its own as we have done in the past...

sufferers but we now have a list of cafes and meeting places where people with dementia and their carers can go and hope that we will have contributed in a small way to raising awareness of the help that is available. Hopefully, between the raffle tickets sold and the treatments carried out we will be able to make a substantial contribution to this worthy cause and know that it will be used locally.

On 23rd April from 4pm to 8pm we are hosting an Elemis event to mark the 25th anniversary of their fantastic skin products but we also wanted to help a local charity. We have chosen Alzheimer Scotland to incorporate a fundraising event.

We would therefore invite everyone along to our Elemis event and enjoy a light buffet, glass of bubbly, free hand massage, consultation on the best products for your skin and purchases at fantastic prices. Plus, of course, perhaps winning that great raffle prize and booking in a treatment for May so we can swell the donation to Alzheimer Scotland. If you haven’t got your raffle ticket yet, please pop in and see us.

A donation will be made from the sale of raffle tickets (£5 per ticket), available up to and including 23rd April 2015 when the 1st prize of an Elemis Gift Set (worth £327) will be drawn. Also, in the month of May, for every treatment carried out at The Toning & Beauty Clinic, £1 will be donated to Alzheimer Scotland. Until we looked into this we had no idea that any help or support existed locally for dementia

SPOTLIGHT ON...

WEATHERTIGHT

WINDOWS & DOORS Interview: Ian McLeod Interview:

Ian

McLeod

When Ian McLeod turns up to quote for your new windows, doors or home extension project, his name may ring a bell with you if you know anything about Scottish boxing. And yes, sure enough, the Ian McLeod now running Weathertight is the former professional boxing legend who was British No 1 in the eighties. Ian grew up in Livingston, and only discovered his boxing talent by accident; he walked in on a boxing match in Craigshill one day, along with some friends, and ended up doing some sparring for fun; the champion boxer he was up against couldn’t believe Ian had had no previous training – he was a natural. He took the sport up with enthusiasm and by the age of 16 became the youngest ever Scottish boxer competing at an international level - a record that still stands. So how do you get from being a professional boxer to running a home improvements business? It turns out that Ian served a carpentry apprenticeship as a young man - “although at that stage I wasn’t interested in it, I just wanted it over and done with as quickly as possible so I could get back to fighting” he says. It’s just as well someone made him go through with the apprenticeship though, as it meant he had another skill to fall back on when he left boxing. “I started off in sales, selling sheet materials,” he says, (and I reckon Ian is as much a born talker as he is a born fighter) “and moved on to set up a security company with my brother which we ran for many years.” He sold out around seven years ago and has been back in the home improvements business since. After working for a couple of other companies, he set up Weathertight, along with George Graham, and a team of fitters. He located a suitable site at Standhill Industrial Estate and set about building the showroom himself. Weathertight opened their doors for business in August last year. So what’s different about Weathertight? It’s a competitive market with a lot of businesses serving

Ian McLeod in the Weathertight showroom. the local area, how does Ian think he can make a difference? “It’s about having proper values. You don’t pay until you are happy with the work we have done, and so far we’ve not had a single unhappy customer. We have a premises here in Bathgate with a showroom that you can visit, so you know who we are and where to find us. You’ll be dealing with either George or myself, so you know where you stand. We come to your house, measure up and give you a quote, it is a simple as that. There is no hard sell where you can’t get us out of your kitchen until you have signed up, or any nonsense like that.” Besides doors and windows, Weathertight sell UPVC roofline, A rated boilers, sliding wardrobe doors and larger projects such as sun lounges and garage conversions. They also supply made to measure blinds - the finishing touches for your project. Ian has maintained his interest in boxing, participating in various charity fights, and taking part in the Commonwealth Games last year. He is planning to open a boxing gym in Livingston in the near future. It sounds intriguing but I couldn’t get the details out of him as the project is still under wraps, but his motivation is clear – to help local young people the way he was helped through boxing. “Boxing was my life from the day I walked into that ring in Craigshill until I retired at 30.” He wants to provide professional coaching using his network of contacts in the boxing profession, and pass on his skills. “Who knows, I may have been on the streets without that outlet. Maybe now I can help other young people.

Interiors feature

Make the most of that new extension with some ideas from EKCO

Now might be the right time to start work on that extension you’ve always promised yourself. But what would you use it for?

truly one of life’s luxuries. Bifold doors which are fully opened to remove all barriers to your garden can create the illusion of space. Why not bring that space closer and have your garden illuminated with solar lights so your guests can enjoy the air and the view without ever leaving the dining table?

Do you have a definite idea or does the thought of having some extra space just appeal to you? Here are some ideas from EKCO to give you some inspiration.

Home office – Why drive to the office when the office can come to you? Apart from the convenience of not having to drive miles every day to get to work there can be tax benefits to building a section of your home that’s solely dedicated to your work. Financial reasons aside, the idea of an office designed around your needs can be highly appealing. Plus you get to see more of the family. Imagine opening your bifold doors on a warm summer’s day and watching your children making the most of the garden while you enjoy a coffee break or work away with your headphones on playing your favourite classical music?

Sun room – Who doesn’t dream of a lazy day in their own sun room? However, with the hustle and bustle of daily life relaxation time can be at a premium. Having a separate room which is kept clutter free and painted in light pastel shades, complete with a chaise longue or recliner and comfy sofa can be the perfect way to re-energise your batteries. This is where your bifold doors come into their own. Fully opened they’ll let in more sunlight and flood your room with warmth and air. Perfect for grabbing a few moments shut eye before round two. Dining kitchen – For those who love to entertain building an extension onto your kitchen can give you the perfect dining room and the space to make a real night of it. The kitchen is the heart of the home. A cliché perhaps but true. The idea of whiling away the summer evenings with close friends around a table with great food, wine and conversation is

Gym – Expensive gym fees and the inconvenience of having to get there and back when we are so time starved can make the idea of a home gym really appealing. If you design your extension with one just one solid wall then you can place full size mirrors on the interior and have your bifold doors in place along the other two sides. This means that when they’re open you will almost be doing your work out outdoors and the mirrors will reflect the light. Now if that doesn’t inspire you to get fit nothing will.

KITCHENS | BATHROOMS | BIFOLD DOORS | SUNROOMS

Many ideas, one solution At EKCO we’ve been supplying and installing top quality Pronorm German-built kitchens and bathrooms since 1999. We’re also one of Scotland’s top suppliers of Origin bi-fold doors which are designed to open fully and allow more fresh air into your home. And, if you need some extra space or simply a place to relax and unwind then we can create that lifestyle sunroom you have always dreamed of.

MUSIC REVIEW

Pale Fire available from Bandcamp by James Kerr, Regal Music Club

This month I’ve been listening to the newer than new selftitled album by Scottish band Pale Fire available from Bandcamp. Short version - it’s excellent. Refreshingly avoiding any temptation to start tracks with hazy beats or studio wash, each song bursts into life from within the classic guitar band tradition but the arrangements are tight and varied, full of clever hooks that perfectly compliment the vocals. The Scottish accent is well to the fore in the vocal sound and lyrical concerns, without any sense of parochialism. The intelligence working within the eleven tracks is clearly illustrated in titles such as “Isaac” and “ John Arbuthnot’s Blues”. Standout tracks on first listen are the melancholy

50

and metallic “Isaac” and “Arms for Orphans”, an earworm with a conscience, but repeated plays reveal layers of subtlety quite some distance away from the lazy stadium chants which plague so many radio friendly releases. Without taking anything away from the quality of the performances, it is very clear that a great deal of care has been taken in the production, which is first rate. Special mention too for the drum arrangements which often suggest marches or traditional patterns without heading in the direction of Celtic rock. In the past I have been guilty of a kind of obsessive anti-parochialism, whereby I would pay attention to a sound from far afield but dismiss the same group if they originated from up the road. Pale Fire: I have learned my lesson.

RECIPE & FOOD NOTES

Rhubarb

By Anne Pinkerton

At the end of February the Scottish Government announced the next stage of their “Towards a Healthier Nation” programme, called “Eat Local.” People across Scotland are being encouraged to make the most of fresh and in-season, local food with the launch of the Scottish Government’s Food Provenance ‘Happier Mealtimes’ campaign. Alongside this there will be champions encouraging the eating and sourcing of fresh, in-season food, which is nutritious, tastes delicious and also has environmental benefits. There will be drop-in sessions to inspire and inform people at supermarkets all over Scotland. Work is beginning in schools and hospitals to support them in using local seasonal produce in their menus.

www.greenerscotland.org has a “what tastes best this month?” chart which is helpful when you are lacking in ideas about what is seasonal to give your family for meals. Their suggested fruit for April is rhubarb; new potatoes and spring greens are the vegetables, and the meats suggested include rabbit, venison and wood pigeon. This sounds a bit posh but really it is not. It does mean that we have to think in a slightly different way about our food. Local supermarkets sell all these things. Rabbit comes diced ready to cook into any stew or stirfry you might do with chicken, and with no bones. Venison sausages are low in fat and although they seem a bit more expensive they do not “bleed” as you cook them so you are getting the meat you pay for. With a tin of mixed beans, another of chopped tomatoes and a fried onion, a little garlic and a dash of recurrent jelly make them part of a sausage and mixed bean casserole. Serve it with new potatoes and finely shredded steamed spring greens. Rhubarb is mostly associated with sweet dishes which we should be steering clear of if we are really trying to be a healthy nation! However it can be delicious eaten with richer proteins such as pork, duck and mackerel. All of which are traditionally served with fruit: orange with duck, apple with pork and gooseberries with mackerel.

Oven-baked pork chops with rhubarb 4 pork chops or 1 per person 1 onion finely chopped and sweated in butter or oil 250g rhubarb wiped, cut into 2inch lengths 1 inch root ginger peeled and chopped very fine Dash orange juice or juice ½ orange Seasoning Method - Either in a heavy metal casserole dish or in a frying pan sear the pork chops for a minute or two on both sides to brown the meat. Transfer into an ovenproof dish, arrange the chops around the edge and put all the other ingredients in the centre. Cover the dish with a lid or a double layer of foil. Bake for 30-40 minutes in a hot oven (180oC). The fruit will make a sauce and take up the fat from the pork. Check the flavour and perhaps add a teaspoonful of sugar to the fruit. Serve with mashed potatoes and a green veg. such as cabbage, broccoli or sprouts. You can do exactly the same but substitute Bramley apples in the winter.

Rhubarb Gingerbread 125g butter 125g soft brown sugar 2 eggs lightly beaten 100g black treacle, warmed with 150g golden syrup 60g chopped crystalised ginger heaped teaspoon ground ginger 250g plain flour 1 level teaspoon bicarbonate of soda dissolved in 4 tablespoons milk 500g rhubarb cut into small pieces Method - Cream the butter and sugar; add the eggs and then the treacle and ginger. Fold the flour in with a metal spoon and make a batter with the milk.Spread half the mixture in the bottom of a 1 ½ litre oven proof dish or use a small roasting tin lined with non-stick paper. Put in a layer of the fruit and cover with the rest of the mixture. Bake at 160oC for 45 minutes. Lower the temperature to 150oC and check again after 15-20 minutes. It might need 10 minutes after this. Test with a skewer. The sides can over-cook because of the juice from the fruit.

Rhubarb gingerbread Pies, tarts, crumbles and cakes are a lovely use of forced rhubarb and this cake with a layer of fruit in the middle is suitable for pudding if served fresh from the oven with cream, yoghurt or custard. Eat the rest later with a cuppa.

FEATURE

Providing a friendly, supportive atmosphere by Suzanne Green

Thanks to books such as Sally Magnusson’s account of her mother’s dementia*, brave films like the recently released Still Alice, and awareness campaigning by the late Sir Terry Pratchett and others, dementia is gradually becoming better understood and accepted in our communities. But until recently I was not familiar with the concept of “dementia cafés” or aware that there were nine such cafés operating in West Lothian. A clinical psychologist, Dr. Bère Miesen, is credited with establishing the first dementia café in 1997 in the Netherlands. He saw the need for a safe place where people with dementia and their carers could get together, socialise and support one another. The first dementia café in the UK, based on Dr. Miesen’s model, was set up in 2000 in Farnborough, Hampshire. “The aim of the café is to provide a happy, relaxed atmosphere for people with dementia still living at home, and for their carers,” says Sally Stockbridge, Dementia Cafés Project Worker for Alzheimer Scotland. “Guests can enjoy a hot drink, home baking and a varied programme of activities. But there is no pressure to do anything. Some people may just want to sit quietly and enjoy their coffee. A carer might want to have a quiet chat with me or someone in a similar position, and this is possible because the person they look after is in a safe place. So they are free to get the advice or support they need.”

Sally Stockbridge, Dementia Cafes Project Worker. Through West Lothian Council, and in partnership with local churches and the volunteer organisation Linlithgow Link, dementia cafés have been established in all nine of the county’s wards. Cafés in Whitburn, Uphall, East Calder, Fauldhouse, Linlithgow, Armadale, Bathgate and Livingston (2) are open once a month for a couple of hours. The day varies, from café to café and organisers make use of a variety of meeting places, including churches, community centres, a care home and even a hotel.

A sense of well-being “We have more than 50 volunteers,” Sally comments, “and they are an incredible group. All received training through Alzheimer Scotland or Linlithgow Link, and they work hard to make each café an inviting place.” Optional activities the volunteers offer include: singing, bingo, musical bingo, card making, quizzes, viewing local history photos and reading. All activities include an element of reminiscence. A themed memory box can be a great conversation starter for café guests. Sally showed me a memory box with a baking theme that included old recipes, and baking tools and tins not commonly seen today. Pulling an antique griddle out of the box, she explained, “You would be amazed at how many memories this triggers and at the conversations it leads to!”

The cafés seem to be very popular. Guests have commented:

“It feels like a family.” • “It’s helpful to talk to others who are going through the same thing.” • “I enjoy the company.” • “I am so pleased to see my husband enjoying himself.” • “The café is important in my life.” •

Dementia is a gradual decline in the functioning of the brain. Amazingly, there are more than 100 forms, though Alzheimer’s disease accounts for about 70% of cases. Globally, it is a huge health issue. In Scotland about 90,000 people are currently living with dementia – most have Alzheimer’s disease – and this number is rapidly increasing. There is no known cure; it is a progressive condition that gets worse over time. However, treatments are available that may help some people with the symptoms of some forms of dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease. And research is progressing every day. The city of Edinburgh is working towards obtaining “dementia friendly” status. And, as awareness and understanding grows, we can help our communities become even more supportive of those with dementia and their carers. Vibrant, welcoming dementia cafés can make a big difference to people, creating a sense of well-being and improving their quality of life. For more information about dementia cafés in West Lothian, email Alzheimer Scotland: WestLothianServices@alzscot.org or ring them on 01506 53310. You can also ring the Dementia Helpline, which offers 24-hour information and emotional support, on 0808 808 3000. Cafe Connect Extra, Dedridge Baptist Church, Quentin Rise, Dedridge, EH54 6QR runs the first Wednesday of every month 2pm – 3.30pm. Memory Cafe, Newyearfield Farm Community Centre, Hawk Brae, Livingston, EH54 6AB runs the first Thursday of every month 2pm – 3.30pm. *Where Memories Go: Why Dementia Changes Everything (Hodder & Stoughton 2015)
