LANIER CENTER FOR LITERARY ARTS HOSTS WINI MCQUEEN WHO/WHAT: Macon textile artist, Wini McQueen, speaks about her work and recent travels WHEN: Wednesday, December 4, 2013. Reception at 5:30 p.m. Presentation at 6:00 p.m. WHERE: Sidney Lanier Cottage, 935 High Street, Macon, GA 31201 MORE INFORMATION: Wini recently returned from a trip to Cot d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) in West Africa and will share the sights, the sounds and the flavors of that exotic part of the world. The public is invited to hear Wini tell her stories of the people, traditions and challenges she faced while seeking to learn about the pieced and story fabrics in this small African country. The audience will learn about African concepts of wealth and beauty and he role gender plays in the production and marketing of fabrics in Wini’s ancestral home. Attendees will listen to the music, see photographs, taste the flavors as well as be invited to handle to tools and textiles used in everyday life and in traditional ceremonies of Cot d’Ivoire. Some items will be available to purchase. Proceeds from the sales will go toward bringing Zan Stella, one of the Ivorian weavers, to Macon on an educational exchange mission. This event is Free for Historic Macon members and only $5.00 for non-members. Students are $3. About the Lanier Center for Literary Arts Sidney Lanier (1842–1881) was a writer, poet, musician, soldier and mathematician. He was born in the Sidney Lanier Cottage at 935 High St. in Macon, Ga. In honor of Lanier’s legacy, Historic Macon Foundation, the owners of the Cottage, have established the Lanier Center for Literary Arts. In addition to sponsoring writers’ workshops and other literary events, Historic Macon has a regular series of book signings.
