HISTORIC MACON TO HOST SEVERAL EVENTS PreservationFEST, Flea Market Discount Sale, Second Annual Architectural Styles Society meeting and two Salons MACON, Ga. — In the next two weeks, Maconites will have many opportunities to get involved with Historic Macon Foundation, which has several upcoming events. PreservationFEST 2011 Friday, Nov. 4, 5:30–7:30 p.m. 923 Washington Ave. Join Historic Macon for PreservationFEST, an open house complete with music, popcorn, beer and wine at the recently restored 923 Washington Ave. Free for members, $10 for nonmembers at the door. Nonmember fee covers a provisional membership. Discounted memberships available for other levels. Sidney's Salon Series: "Stories and Artifacts: Macon's Contributions in a Time of War" Tuesday, Nov. 8, 5:30–7:00 p.m. Sidney Lanier Cottage, 935 High St. The Lanier Center for Literary Arts continues the Sidney's Salon Series on Nov. 8 with Conie Mac Darnell, who will be discussing stories from his latest project, a Civil War and emancipation era guide entitled "Walking Back to Georgia." Darnell was president of NewTown Macon from 1999 to 2004 and wrote a short history of Macon for the "Macon Sketchbook." Refreshments. Free for members, $5 nonmembers, $3 students. Flea Market Second Sale Saturday, Nov. 12, 9:00 a.m.–noon Northeast Plaza Shopping Center (Rose's), 668 Shurling Dr. All items at the flea market will be half-price at the second sale. Second Annual Meeting of the Architectural Styles Society Sunday, Nov. 13, 5:00 p.m. 155 Oak Haven Ave. The featured style at this year's Architectural Styles Society meeting is the Arts and Crafts Style, as exhibited by Neel Reed's 1909 commission on Oak Haven Avenue. The home has undergone rehabilitation by Macon architect Shannon Fickling. Advance ticketing required. Tickets are $35 and may be purchased at www.historicmacon.org. Discounted memberships available. Wholehog roast, fall vegetables, beer and wine. All proceeds benefit Historic Macon. Special Salon with Dr. Peter Addyman Monday, Nov. 14, 5:30–7 p.m. Sidney Lanier Cottage, 935 High St. Dr. Peter Addyman, CBE, will present a special lecture on British archaeology. Addyman is one of the world’s foremost archaeologists and was founder and director of the York Archaeological Trust. This reception and lecture honoring Addyman is free and open to the public. The Middle Georgia Historical Society and the Macon Heritage Foundation merged in 2003 to create Historic Macon Foundation. He was born in the Sidney Lanier Cottage at 935 High St. in Macon, Ga. In honor of Lanier’s legacy, Historic Macon Foundation, the owners of the Cottage, have established the Lanier Center for Literary Arts. In addition to sponsoring writers’ workshops and other literary events, Historic Macon has a regular series of book signings. For this series, entitled Sidney’s Salons, Historic Macon invites well-known authors and bright, up and coming authors to read, answer questions and sign books.
