MODERN ARMIES AND EQUIPMENT CIA, 60 ANS D’ACTIONS CLANDESTINES

CIA : sixty years of secret operations. From the end of WWII to the operations tracking Ben Laden in Pakistan in 2008, the activities of the famous American secret service are analysed in this work. CIA agents have been present for more than 60 years in all the operational theatres and the world’s trouble spots. There is not a single war, not a coup d’état where America’s men in the shadows have not been involved. Never has a secret service been so powerful: its representatives in post in a number of capitals dealt directly with the most highly-placed politicians.

M4 CARBINE

The M4 Rifle is the development of the famous M 16. Several experts see in it the archetypal assault rifle, i.e. a compromise between a rifle and a sub-machine gun: from the former it has retained long distance precision and from the latter ease of handling and large capacity magazine feeding. For the first time this book gives an account of this weapon, used nowadays by hundreds of thousands of combatants in all theatres of operations.

THE MINIMI MACHINE GUN

The FNH Minimi light machine gun was initially developed to respond to the technological leap forward made by the Soviet PKM whose lightness was due to the way it was made, by stamping. Ever since 1974, because of its lightness and its firepower, FN Herstal’s light machine gun has illustrated how sound the concept of the direct infantry support weapon is and has been selected by more than 45 user countries and used in fifteen or so conflicts including two major ones: Iraq and Afghanistan.

The most sadly famous of them all was the Chemin des Dames in 1917 which has remained engraved in the French collective memory. BATAILLES DE CHAMPAGNE - Battles in Champagne With Artois, Champagne was almost certainly the most murderous battlefield of the front. This book evokes in a most striking manner the twelve months of fighting which the tragic names of Souain, Massige, Tahure, Perthes et Mesnil-les-Hurlus represent. From the bloody winter battle to the great offensive on 25th September, a host of powerful, mainly unpublished pictures, uniforms, weapons, memorabilia, and written accounts shed new light on this page of our history. The authors have also undertaken to recount the main features with an objective, critical evocation of events. HIs0279 • 37,34 € 978-2-35250-063-6 FRENCH ONLY

Volume 1 : In this first volume, the emphasis is put on the Renault VM model 1933 light cavalry tank. It was a proper tank, although very light and ill-armed, but fast and agile, as should be any cavalry combat vehicle. Volume 2 : It presents the new vehicle adopted in 1935, as the «AMR 35», a light cavalry tank which has been the basis of two different types of radio-equipped command vehicles.

LE CEF EN ITALIE

In July 1944, the soldiers of the French Expeditionary Force in Italy wipped off the defeat of 1940. Deserving the admiration of the Americans, they have forced the German defenses untouched for months and by an extraordinary mountain action around the Garigliano, they have turned the German lines, opening the road to Rome for the Allies. This book gives a detailled account of General Juin’s men, their organization, equipment, daily life on the front, etc. About twenty maps and hundreds of photographs are included.

L’ARMÉE FRANÇAISE 1943-1956

After adopting the American uniform in 1943, the high command and the units were constantly improving it with additions conforming to French military traditions. Then once peace had returned, its metropolitan army needed new dress and uniforms. The result of this development bore its fruit in 1954. In that year, the TTA 148 appeared; it was a set of regulations for all the arms, in colour given over to the uniforms and insignia of the French Army. The book includes the plates of a fascicule on the officers’ uniforms which complements the contents of the regulations nicely

NORMANDY 44 - GERMAN HELMETS

Impressive by their historical dimension, camouflaged helmets often reproduce the colours and patterns applied to tanks and guns. The wide array of more than 150 original German helmets shown here is only a glimpse of their huge variety, but it captures the general trends in WW2 German equipment camouflage. Most of these helmets originate from private collections and were found on the Normandy battlefield. The majority were photographed in natural light, to enhance the actual efficiency of their camouflage finish.

As for the text, it is drawn from the account written by Schwerin and verified, incorporating as it does information made available by numerous sources, of which the list at the end of the work only gives a rough idea. It particularly studies the circumstances in which the unit’s fighting took place.

SPEARHEADING D-DAY

The invasion of Normandy is one of the most written about military events of the 20th Century. However, many of the smaller units have been forgotten or ignored. The author examines the landings at Utah and Omaha with an eye to what other writers have ignored. Utilizing the original military records and extensive veteran interviews, his book covers such diverse topics as how the invasion tactics were developed, the organization of the units involved, as well as uniforms and equipment of the assault troops. For the first time, both Navy officers directly involved with the first waves at Utah Beach speak out on what actually caused the misdirection of the Utah landings.

THE FIELD ARTILLERY 1941-1945

Upon entering the war, American field artillery had fallen behind both technically and in implementation. The initital effort was made in divisional artillery and then, in 1943, in more powerful heavy artillery. However, although the quality of the materiel and the shells, together with efficient training of the artillerymen were essential, numerous and efficient radio means, observation planes attached to units and artillery tractors enabled the guns to achieve maximum efficiency. Therefore, American field artillery was, with 300 battalions at the beginning of 1945, the most powerful and the most modern in the world.

The names Bieske, Debrecen don’t mean very much to us. And yet it was in those far reaches of Hungary that very bitter fighting took place, culminating in one of the toughest sieges on the Eastern Front : Budapest. It also consecrated the last German armoured attack of the conflict. Following the dramatic destruction of Army Group Centre and overshadowed by Koniev’s and Zhukov’s rush on Berlin, this particular theatre of operations has been somewhat ignored. TWILIGHT OF MEDIEVAL CASTLES

After the Hundred Years War, the lords of France changed nothing in their way of life. They remained faithful to the austere, thick stone walls, with crenulated towers topped by machicolations. These fortresses built according to archaic models were no longer able to resist great campaign armies or powerful cannonades. During the second half of the 15th century, the fortresses simply became the symbol of belonging to a social class. Some fortresses now appeared to be simple stone challenges, issued by a nobility in search of its identity to a finally triumphant sovereign power.

ANCIENT - 18TH CENTURY ALESIA, 52 BC

The Romans had been at odds with the “Gauls” for a very long time indeed. Somewhere between 390 and 386 BC, a Senoni warchief called Brennus managed to capture Rome and ransom the city. The next step was part of the competition between the “Great Powers” of the period. Independent Gaul was implicated in the global expansionist process of Roman might. Finally more pragmatically, Gaul merely became part of Julius Caesar’s political strategy. Alésia was the final manifestation of this deep mistrust between the two peoples.

FONTENOY, France dominating europe

In 1745, operations engaged by France sought to finalise the conquest of the Austria Low Countries and isolate the United Provinces from the coalisation which had created the Pragmatic Army. After a crafty diversionary movement, the French army commanded by Maurice de Saxe, threw itself at Tournay which it invested then besieged. Under the command of the Duke of Cumberland, the Allies gathered their forces then advanced towards the town with the intention of lifting the siege and destroying the French army.

NAPOLEONIC BATTLES - AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ESSLING, Napoleon’s first defeat ?

The Battle of Essling, on 21 and 22 May 1809, brought together the French and Austrian armies in a ferocious combat. The Austrians drove the French divisions, who where only linked to their other corps by a frail bridge, back up against Danube. The ferocious « Kaiserliks » and the capricious Danube in spate finally got the better of the « Furia Francese ». Here Napoleon had to face his first defeat; two months later, however, he had his revenge on the plains of Wagram.

HANAU & MONTMIRAIL, the Guard fought and won.

After the disastrous Saxon Campaign, with its lowest point at Leipzig, the French army retreated, withdrawing inside its natural frontiers. After the defeat at La Rothière on 1st February, Napoleon fell back on Troyes. The Allies decided to march on Paris but made the mistake of doing so in dispersed order. Using the capacity for marching of his soldiers, he fell like lightning on the Army of Silesia which he swept aside in five days of battles at Champaubert, Montmirail and Vauchamps.

FIRST BULL RUN

The Battle of Bull Run took place in July 1861 and although when all was said and done, its impact was relatively limited, it did have a far-reaching effect on the American Civil War itself. Its psychological impact on the combatants was indeed unquestionable, for the North in particular, and made everyone conscious of the reality of war and the challenges that had to be faced. The first Battle of Manassas was special because it was the first large-scale engagement in which troops were brought to the battle area by train, which in fact enabled the Confederates to win this battle.

UNIFORMS OF THE 1st EMPIRE - OFFICERS & SOLDIERS series FRENCH HUSSARS - Volume 2 1804-1812

The first royal Hussars regiment was formed in Strasburg in 1693. Disbanded in 1697, it was reformed four years later and took the name of Saint-Genies Hussars in 1707. In the same way as the other cavalry corps of the ancien Régime, the Hussars survived the Revolution, the Directoire and the Consulate without their uniforms changing substantially. During the Empire, fashion changed and the look of the horseman evolved. This volume will review through 65 plates, the uniforms, equipement, weapons of the NCO, officers and trumpeters from the first to the eighth Hussars regiment.

CUIRASSIERS 1800-1815

Dating back to the Heavy Cavalry of the Ancien Régime, the first Cuirassier regiments were really created in France in 1801 during the Consulate. This new type of cavalry turned out to be one of the essential arms of Napoleon’s tactics. Twelve then soon after fourteen regiments were therefore created to constitute the shock troops of the Napoleonic Wars, together with the two regiments of Carabiniers already formed. They took part for more than ten years in all Napoleon’s campaigns from Austerlitz to Waterloo and from the valleys of Spain to the distant Russian steppes.

For the Emperor, the cavalry was the arm with which he was able to command; it gave him information and enabled him to make his action felt in the heart and the heat of engagements. It was essential for him to have a rapid reaction force of cavalry for manoeuvring (Light Cavalry), units to break up engagement (Heavy Cavalry), and units for exploiting the terrain (the Line and the Dragoons). This volume depicts the older regiments of the cavalry of the Guard : the Grenadiers à cheval, the Dragoons and the Chasseurs à cheval.

THE SWISS IN FRENCH SERVICE

On the eve of the Revolution there were therefore Swiss units in the government guards or the troops of the Line in France. The revolutionary process in France ran up against their loyalty to their employer: the King, and the sad events of the massacre of the Swiss Guard on 10 August 1792. During the vast European reorganisation, Switzerland furnished France with troops of great worth who upheld their favourite motto “Honneur et Fidélité”. The book skims over the Swiss troops in service with the King, to concentrate on those who served the Republic, the Consulate and then the Empire, focusing on less well-known aspects.

NAPOLEONIC GREAT CAMPAIGNS THE BATTLE OF OCAÑA

Although the Battle of Ocana is without doubt the Army of Spain’s greatest victory, there was no monograph on the event. As a matter of national pride Spanish, historians could hardly be expected to tackle the question, for the French, Napoleon was not the Commander-in-Chief, and for the English, since none of their troops took part in the event, they neglected the battle. Now, the French archives are overflowing with information about it, so the author could develop these contemporary sources adding some new Spanish ones, to achieve the present book.

THE CROSSING OF THE BEREZINA

In the French collective consciousness, the Battle of the Berezina represents a disaster without precedent or even limits. But at first it was a diversionary manoeuvre in the face of the enemy and also a manoeuvre to cross a major linear obstacle: a river. It was the work of sappers and pontoneers who built a bridge with selflessness, courage and determination under extreme conditions so that the troops could cross over. It was a technical exploit to which these men without rank, led by wilful and competent officers gave themselves, most often at the cost of their lives.

n°10 - F-4 PHANTOM - Volume 1 Us Navy and Us Marines Corps

Designed originally as a carrier-borne interceptor armed only with missiles, its beginnings were so promising that the USAF adopted it as a tactical fighter and was quickly followed by an impressive number of other air forces around the world which explains why certain examples are still in service today. The US Navy and the USMC, at the origin of the project used the machine in its four main versions to which were added all the specialised aerial reconnaissance variants.

Shortly after the US Navy put the F-4H-1 Phantom II into service in 1960, the US Air Force in turn took an interest in it, and it was in May 1963 that the first USAF F-4C, overall similar to the Navy version, made its first flight and exceeded Mach 2. Apart from the USAF and the various units of the Air National Guard or the United States Reserve, the Phantom IIs were also very successful in the export markets since more than 1 200 examples were flown by ten or so countries, especially NATO ones. Some of them even built them under licence in large numbers and many used them in combat often successfully.

Built for almost half a century in twenty or so different versions, in four successive generations, the “Fishbed” was not only the jet which was built in the largest numbers in the whole of aviation history, but also the aircraft which was built in greatest numbers since the end of the Second World War. Used by fifty or so air forces, the MiG-21 took part in most of the major conflicts during the four last decades. At the present time more than a thousand examples of this fighter are still in service, with their career continuing thanks to modernisation programmes for the surviving aircraft.

This first volume presents the career of the one of the US Navy’s most legendary planes, the F-14 Tomcat. From its appearance in 1972 to its withdrawal from service in 2006, this fighter has flown through thirty years of history in the air. All the models – including those sold to the Iranians before the 1978 Revolution – as well as all the carrierborne units which used them are shown, described and analysed in this book. The F-16 has lasted a long time. At a time when other planes retire to museums, General Dynamics’ fighter-bomber is still a formidable foe in international competitions against so-called “fifth generation” planes. The first prototype flew for the first time in 1974 and the operational career of the last aircraft built will continue well into the 2040s. Almost seventy-years and still going strong! Meanwhile, this light fighter was optimised for daytime missions and became a formidable fighter-bomber; more than 4 400 were built and used by more than 25 countries.

The Transall is always impressive when it’s a question of getting down to the nittygritty and showing some muscle in the most unlikely situations, but for how much longer now? It is not wise to ignore the potential difficulties and dangers of using a worn-out and ageing aircraft in combat in spite of all its qualities.

From Lebanon up to Afghanistan, the naval plane has opened fire on its adversaries without losing a single plane in French colours. Since it entered into service in 1978, it has also shown a capacity to adapt, which proves, once more, the genius and common sense of Dassault’s design team. Derived from the Breguet 690 built at the beginning of 1936, the Breguet 693 had its baptism by fire in May 1940: eleven aircraft of the GBA 1/54 were engaged in the region of Maastricht. Unfortunately the ground assault tactic utilized proved to be disastrous, and ten among them never returned. The Breguet 693, a two-seat twin-engine bomber carrying a pilot and a machine gun back-to-back, was also one of the first French aircraft to be equipped with radio communication. Like many units however, the assault groups were eventually pulled out of North Africa, and due the German occupation, this particular model saw no other future developments.

During the preparation of the Normandy Invasion, the American high command realized soon enough that the 8th Air Force, could not undertake the close support of ground units in this major offensive. The keystone of operation “Overlord” would indeed be mastery of the skies. LA GAMME HELLER MUSÉE - The Heller Musée kit series At the time of the 70th anniversary of the France campaign and “modern” Hi-Tech re-edition of one of this French maker’s kits, it seemed to be in good taste to review the exceptional career of the “Musée” kit series. At the time these kits announced the amateurs’ renewed interest in French aircraft during the French Campaign, and the start of the first true series of purely French kits. This book also shows the make’s competitors and all the new boxes brought out under other names. Essential reading for all “plane” modellers.

1973-2000 THE STORY OF MATCHBOX KITS

The Lesney company which used the brand name “Matchbox” was founded in 1953 by Mr Leslie Smith and Mr Rodney Smith. It was this company that thought up these little “pocket money” vehicles and the ingenious packaging which gave them their name. That name came from the box which was the shape, size and colour of a match box. The firm brought out scale models of planes, tanks, boats, motorbikes and cars but also little soldiers which all brightened the childhood days of today’s forty-yearolds…This book retraces the forty glorious years of a firm, of a brand of kits intended for beginners just as much as it was for the most demanding buffs.

This venerable French company was present everywhere in the rural world and did not miss any opportunity to remind people that its products were 100% French. Year in year out, farming techniques developed faster and faster and after a prosperous period, the Société Française encountered serious difficulties. This led to SFV’s association with Case: after losing its century-old brand image, the young SFV ended up by vanishing.
