Editor’s welcome

CHRISTMAS issue Welcome

to the Christmas issue, featuring exclusive interviews with Made in Chelsea’s Jamie Laing and Dragons’ Den’s Theo Paphitis, plus four big fashion shoots and our indispensible Gift Guide. This month, the His & Hers team has been hard at work organising a series of photo-shoots and interviews for our biggest ever issue. While we’ve been burning the midnight oil, the magazine has been making an appearance at all the parties the team missed out on. We were particularly proud to be asked to provide copies of His & Hers for the US TV and film stars appearing on the red carpet at the annual Fashion Rocks Christmas Party in Hollywood, organised by Dean Ryan. Meanwhile, a little closer to home, we were delighted to join forces with our friends at the Metquarter, who provided goodie bags for guests at Clatterbridge’s glittering Bond-themed charity ball. While dropping copies of His & Hers into every bag, we reflected on the massive amount of hard work by Samantha, Karen and the rest of the Clatterbridge fundraising team that had gone into making the night a huge success. We salute you, ladies! Continuing with the party theme, I was delighted to be invited to this year’s Juice FM Style Awards, where I was honoured to receive the Juice FM Fashionista Award. Simply being shortlisted at such a prestigious awards ceremony alongside one of my fashion heroes, Justine Mills, and Britain’s Top Designer 2012, the enormously talented Matthew O’Brien, was a lovely surprise and winning was one of my highlights of 2012. Thanks are due to Maureen Hooston, the MD of Mococo (the sponsor of the Fashionista award) for making a great night even better, to Jayne Moore (the first person to nominate me) and to everyone who took the time to vote. We’ll be featuring highlights from the Juice FM Style Awards in the New Year Trends issue. In the meantime, thanks are due to Hester Brodie, Bryan Harrop, Dan Perry of Mediaplay and Hannah Ramsay, all of whom have joined me in burning the midnight oil on this issue, and to Jean Hill (my brilliant mother), who has been roped in this month for everything from making up goodie bags to review writing and representing the magazine on the party circuit. And finally, a huge thank you to His & Hers’ lovely advertisers and readers for supporting the magazine’s growth in 2012. Have a fantastic Christmas holiday & we’ll be back in the New Year.

His&hers INTERVIEW

Sweet Like Candy Made in Chelsea star and “cross between Hugh Hefner and Willy Wonka” Jamie Laing explains how a passion for sweet treats and beautiful women led to the creation of Candy Kittens. WORDS: Emma Hill, PICTURES: Robin Clewley

W

hen His & Hers met with Jamie Laing for our exclusive interview, the Made in Chelsea star greeted us with a warm handshake, followed by a cheery confession that a late night and an early morning train had taken their toll. We feared for a moment that we were in for a subdued interview, but as Jamie took stock of his surroundings - an immaculately presented Harvey Nichols food market within Liverpool ONE, featuring a gleaming Candy Kittens display – he broke into a wide grin and suddenly Jamie no longer looked like a man in need of coffee – instead, he looked very much like the ultimate kid in a candy store. Picking up one of his Candy Kitten lollies, Jamie smiled in wonderment and muttered: “This is like watching my baby take its first steps. It’s amazing.” Perhaps it should come as no surprise that the 23-year-old heir to the McVitie’s fortune has a sweet tooth. His ancestors were, after all, credited with creating the Jaffa Cake, the digestive and the rich tea biscuit. The only difference is that Jamie wants to make his sweets somewhat sexier than the humble rich tea biscuit. Jamie told His & Hers that he was determined to make his Candy Kittens line chic and seductive.

To keep his brand exclusive, he’s signed a deal with Harvey Nichols, making theirs the only stores where you’ll be able to pick up his stylish sweets. He’s also charging somewhat more than you’d expect to pay for a bag of Haribo, though he assures us that his products are worth every penny, adding with a wink: “They taste like heaven!” Jamie said he was thrilled to have his candy stocked in Harvey Nichols and it’s clear that he genuinely relishes every element of building up his business (we suspect that striking a pose with his Candy Kittens, the glamorous women he hires to hand out his sweets, may be a particular highlight). “This is just the beginning”, declared Jamie, adding: “We’re trying to create a brand like Victoria’s Secret, which is sexy and sophisticated, but for sweets.” With the prestigious partnership with Harvey Nichols under his belt and a flock of screaming female fans massing outside the store waiting for Jamie to sign their Candy Kittens lollipops once our interview is over, we can see why he’s eagerly awaiting the next challenge. As we leave Jamie to meet his fans, we suspect that Chelsea’s self-styled “cross between Hugh Hefner and Willy Wonka” is just getting started. www.candykittens.co.uk www.harveynichols.com

“Why should you have

your underwear in bag with the chicken?” An outspoken Theo Paphitis tells Emma Hill it’s outrageous that most women are still buying their lingerie as part of their supermarket shop and explains why he’s the man to put this right.

R

Photographer: Mina Bihi

etail magnate, leading entrepreneur and star of Dragons’ Den, Theo Paphitis is a man on a mission. During a recent visit to Liverpool ONE to open his Boux Avenue lingerie store, an animated Theo declared: “Too many women are still buying underwear as an afterthought and chucking it in plastic bags along with the rest of the groceries, but underwear is sensual and shopping for it should be a sensual experience, too!” Theo is something of an authority on the lingerie market, having bought La Senza in 1998, reviving its fortunes and then selling his stake in the company in 2006. Seeing a gap in the market for an underwear chain specialising in affordable yet indulgent products, he launched Boux Avenue in 2011. Already he’s rolled the brand out, opening 17 stores, and plans to open at least seven more in 2013. Theo told His & Hers: “You have to be brave to launch a business in this economic climate, but the response to the opening of the

18

first Boux Avenue stores has been fantastic.” Theo says his goal with Boux Avenue was to build a brand which was luxurious and sensuous, but which was accessible to all. He explained: “Our biggest challenge was that people saw the expensive shop fittings and displays and thought ‘I can’t afford to shop there.’ But as soon as we get people into the store, they can see that everything’s surprisingly affordable.” Theo added: “It was also important to us that women of all sizes would feel comfortable shopping here. We offer an extensive range of sizes and have had so much great feedback from women who’ve been surprised and delighted that our entire range is available in their size. You shouldn’t have to be excessively rich or excessively thin to buy great underwear. Everyone can buy into the Boux Avenue range!” Theo was clearly delighted to be bringing his brand to Liverpool, saying: “Liverpool was one of our top 10 sites for a variety of reasons, so the minute the right site became available at the right price, we were in.” Following a high profile ‘Embrace Your Curves’ marketing campaign, Boux’s range of underwear, swimwear and nightwear in sizes 30A to 40H and 6 to 20 appears to be flying out of their Liverpool store in the run-up to Christmas, suggesting that Theo’s plans to shift our underwear shopping out of the supermarkets and back onto the high street is right on track. www.bouxavenue.com

STREET SMART

This month, we made it our mission to find out how you’ve been tackling casual weekend dressing on London’s frosty streets. WORDS: Hannah Ramsay, PICTURES: Alexandra Burnside Hughes

Lesley, 55

Area Manager We thought Lesley looked fabulous working the classics here. Pairing skinny Topshop pants with a grey coat from Whistles, she accessorised with Next brogues and an oversized tan handbag. She added some print with a bold leopard scarf.

20

Francis, 19

Student Francis went down the classic chic route here, teaming Topshop leggings with a simple cream jumper, and a classic trench from Comptoir des Cotonniers. She finished the look with a handbag picked up in a charity shop.

Katrina, 36

Social Worker Katrina says she’s had this textured H&M coat for years, but we thought it looked fantastic, and very cosy. She wore it over a dress from the same shop, with thick black tights and on-trend tan ankle boots.

Skye, 22

Fashion Assistant I loved Skye’s statement printed trousers from Zara, which she teamed with a simple top, also from the store and an edgy black Iro coat. She finished the look with a neutral leather Balenciaga handbag.

Amelia, 19

Student Amelia looked both relaxed and stylish in this outfit. Over khaki Zara trousers, she wore a simple jersey top and scarf from Topshop and ankle boots, also from the store. She kept warm in a black ‘coatigan’ from River Island.

Joanna, 26

Broadcast Researcher Joanna looked effortless yet striking in this outfit of American Apparel jeans, Vagabond boots and Sparkle and Fade jumper. She covered up in a vintage fur coat and finished off her look with a headscarf which is also vintage.

Now, not everyone turned up looking their best. We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Miss Oliver, you didn’t do yourself justice. If you’re going to present all night you’ve got to get it right. However, we loved your accessories! Block heels and a statement necklace are very OTM (of the moment). Necklace, £20, Accessorize.

We thought it would be hard for Rita Ora to find a dress that competed with her amazingly bouncy hair. However, her show stopper puffball dress was up to the challenge! But don’t worry, we know that forking out for the Alexander McQueen version isn’t likely to be an option, so we’ve found you a fab alternative at high street favourite, Topshop. Floral dress, £80, Topshop.

Hester’s looks

Picking up three awards at this year’s event, Emeli Sandé was clearly a favourite, and what better way to complement the new additions to her mantelpiece than with a killer outfit. If you’ve got curves like Miss Sande we’d suggest this little number from Primark with clever paneLling to create a chic silhouette. Pencil skirt, £10, Primark.

At the MOBOS, our favourite Liverpool diva, Rebecca Ferguson, wore a full-on glitter ball style maxi. If your inner diva isn’t quite as extrovert, try this chic maxi dress from Warehouse for a hint of sparkle. Dress, £95, Natalie O’Hare at Warehouse.

MOBO Must-Haves This month we’ve been inspired by the recent MOBO awards at the Echo Arena, where glamour was the name of the game.

Many celebs opted for the classic LBD, so we thought we’d find you one with a quirky edge that will update your party wardrobe immediately. This little gem at MissGuided will be a life saver during the hectic party season, so whether you rock it with bare legs and boots or tights and prim heels, this dress will see you through any event in style. Black dress with embroidery, £33.99, MissGuided

His&hers DRINK

Marco Pierre White says ‘Thank Fizz it’s Friday’ His & Hers recommends: this month’s best offer for those with champagne tastes on a beer budget.

A

fter a long week at the office, followed by lastminute Christmas shopping, the His & Hers team can think of no better way to celebrate the start of the weekend than with a nice chilled glass of champagne at the popular Marco Pierre White cocktail bar inside Hotel Indigo, Chapel Street. Every Friday between 5 and 7pm, they are now making one of our favourite Friday treats affordable by offering fatigued professionals a bottle of champagne for just £20. Appropriately titled, Thank Fizz it’s Friday, this promotion is the perfect way to kick-start any weekend. Gary Scott, restaurant manager at Marco Pierre White, told us: “We are all about providing our guests with the best possible experience. We want to look after those who visit us, and want them to leave feeling happy,

refreshed and rejuvenated – and we believe a bottle of champagne at just £20 is guaranteed to achieve that. “And if you are feeling extra indulgent then why not make a reservation at our famous Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill, and really finish the week off on a high!” Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill is located in the heart of Liverpool’s historic commercial district on Chapel Street and is a stone’s throw from Liverpool ONE and the city’s huge variety of high street and designer stores, not to mention the many theatres, museums and cultural hotspots Liverpool has to offer. To make a reservation, call Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill, on 0151 559 0555, www. mpwsteakhouseliverpool.co.uk

Five minutes with Dianne Marshall, Beauty Insider With celebrity clients including Kate Winslet and Gwyneth Paltrow and 25 years’ experience specialising in hair extensions, it’s fair to say that Dianne Marshall’s at the top of her game.

D

ianne Marshall has spent a quarter of a century at the forefront of hair extensions, working with clients like Kate Winslet for her performance in Titanic and Gwyneth Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love. After rising through the ranks in her industry, this autumn, Dianne took the plunge and launched her own collection of hair extensions, The Dianne Marshall Collection, which is available in three ranges, Remi, European and Russian, online and at Voodou salons. Dianne explained: “Remi is the latest range which we think will be our most popular and I am extremely proud to introduce this hair. With our outstanding quality that’s long lasting, non-shedding and tangle free - finally a luxury hair at high street prices. “European and Russian hair is our elite hair which is hand wefted and colour matched to perfection for a customised finish. European hair is available in all lengths and colours which holds an amazing curl but most important, the quality is exceptional.

32

“Our Russian hair is limited lengths as we will only select the highest quality from this country. Russian hair in the past has been a leader in the luxury hair world but with the demand being so high and the availability so limited they have been introducing other qualities which have been confusing the market. “My ethos is to always source the highest quality from wherever it may come from. It’s not about the origin of the hair - it’s always about the quality!” She concluded: “I am excited that the range will be accessible to the women of Liverpool, who love their hair extensions but thought that Dianne Marshall was out of their reach. Now you can have the quality of Dianne Marshall’s hair, at affordable prices. What’s more I am working with the stylists to pass on my 25 years of expertise and knowledge of how to care for a client’s hair to ensure lasting quality and condition.” Dianne Marshall The Hair Extension Collection is available from Voodou, Liverpool, www.voodou.co.uk www.diannemarshall.Com

His & Hers joins the North West’s biggest charity sing-along We started the party season in style by joining thousands for a festive sing-along at Cheshire Oaks led by celebrity vocal coach Yvie Burnett.

O

n 15th November, thousands gathered at Cheshire Oaks for a record-breaking sing-along in aid of Claire House Children’s Hospice. Celebrity vocal coach Yvie Burnett, who has trained local singer Rebecca Ferguson as well as international stars such as Katy Perry, Leona Lewis and Goldfrapp’s Alison, led the chorus with a little help from the Radio City 96.7 presenters. Yvie, who found fame as the vocal coach on X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent, America’s Got Talent and The Voice, caught up with His & Hers over coffees in the run-up to the record-breaking event. “It’s going to be so exciting!” she declared, adding: “People get nervous about singing, but when you’re singing as part of a big group in a choir, you can afford to be confident.” Yvie added: “Thanks to programmes like Glee, more and more people are joining choirs and it’s great that we can harness that enthusiasm for such a good cause.” The celebrity vocal coach said: “Recently, I’ve been working on The Voice and gearing up for Superstar with Andrew Lloyd Webber for ITV. Those shows are all consuming when you’re working on them, so it’s lovely to get the chance to take a quick break.” She added: “Raising money for Claire House

34

has been the perfect way to start Christmas with a bang. I’m so impressed by what their team do – they go through so much every day and they have such ambitious targets to meet in terms of fundraising.” Yvie pointed out that in addition to hosting the charity sing-along, the Cheshire Oaks outlet village was also supporting Claire House with a series of in-store fundraising activities and offers. She then laughingly confessed that she knew about the offers because she’d spent the afternoon Christmas shopping, adding: “This is what happens when you arrive several hours early to a shopping centre. I feel like I’ve been in virtually every store Christmas shopping.” After her laid-back afternoon and festive interview with His & Hers, Yvie sprang into action, providing expert hints and tips to ensure that the huge crowd that had gathered for the sing-along joined in one voice to sing ‘All I want for Christmas is You’ and ‘I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day’. The climax of the evening came when the centre’s lights and the UK’s tallest artificial tree, with over 80,000 baubles and 100,000 lights were lit by four of the children from Claire House Children’s Hospice. This was accompanied by a dazzling array of fireworks. We can think of worse ways to begin the festive period!

FIT TO RUN?

His & Hers’ resident fitness experts Anthony Brett and Lucie Riches explain why you should get fit to run, rather than running to get fit this winter.

T

raining and then watching our intrepid athletes run the Liverpool Marathon made us think about how people approach running as a fitness activity. Very often people decide to get fit and begin running right away. This is not always the best strategy. We love running! Lucie and I have completed half marathons, 5 and 10ks and always talk to our clients about the benefits of running. Running is a great way to mobilise the whole body, burn calories, release stress and even socialise, but it’s also a good way to hurt yourself and be put off training for a long time. Simply put, if you have never exercised before, or are returning from a long absence or injury, you should get fit to run, not run to get fit. Running is a demanding exercise; especially on the knees, hips and lower back. A general strength programme, interspersed with short runs, can help to injury proof you, as well as making you faster over whatever distance you care to run. People often focus on the cardiovascular demands of running, but we talk to our clients about imagining running as hundreds of repetitions of a single leg exercise that requires good strength and muscular endurance. The best forms of runs for fat loss are ‘interval runs’: short, sharp bursts of activity that require good muscular endurance.

Additionally, running is not always the best exercise for some of our female clients. Due to the differences between the male and female pelvis, and the effects this can have on female knees and ankles, running can be problematic for some women. If you have wider hips and are markedly knock kneed (what’s know as ‘valgus knee’), it may be better in the long term to limit your running volume. Running can be great fun and hugely rewarding, especially when you can get up the next day feeling fit and refreshed. Work on your strength and only increase your run volumes gradually, and we’ll see you out there! Email: info@pellaris.com, www.pellaris.com, twitter: pellaris_gb

Emma McHarrie’s Entertainment News Who’s feeling all festive? I am! I’ve even started my Christmas shopping and am feeling oh so smug about it.

Part of my festive feeling comes from attending the Liverpool ONE Ice Festival launch - just excellent! Some of the Sleeping Beauty panto stars who are appearing at the Waterfront Big Top this December paid a quick visit, too, and drew huge crowds as they had a sing-along and chat with their fans (see pics). The waterfront is going to look amazing this Christmas, not only with the panto but also with the Liverpool Christmas Family Festival which wraps around it and will see the space transformed into a captivating Christmas spectacular of gift stalls, children’s fairground rides and much more. The MOBO Awards arrived in Liverpool in November and what a brilliant night it was for the city – Emeli Sande was the biggest winner of the night, scooping three awards. JLS walked away with Best Video for Do You Feel What I Feel and TLC’s Rozonda ‘Chilli’ and Tionne ‘t-boz’ collected an award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. The pair then introduced Stooshe who performed an amazing version of TLC’s Waterfalls – another fantastic success for Liverpool, with the stars who attended full of praise for the city. After conquering the main stages at some of the biggest festivals this summer, Florence & the Machine arrive in Liverpool in December for a show that has been described as ‘epic’. Meanwhile, Madness are hitting the road in the same month for what’s been called their biggest tour to date - they’ll be showcasing tracks from their new album as well playing all the fan favourites. Looking into the New Year, Strictly Come Dancing, Little Mix, X Factor, Example & Jessie J are just some of the shows to look forward to...can’t wait and no doubt I’ll be announcing many more before long!

Kevin, 51

Owner of Design Company We thought Kevin looked very dapper in his Nigel Cabourn blazer and Paul Smith scarf. He teamed these with Joe & Co jeans and an Ally Capellino bag, and finished the look off with Grenson shoes.

Ryan, 19

Intern Ryan was ashamed to admit that the jacket he’s wearing is his mum’s, but we thought it looked great teamed with his skinny Bershka pants and stripy Fred Perry tee. His hat was a vintage find from Beyond Retro.

Gregory, 37

Stylist We loved Gregory’s All Saints pea-coat and snood combination from afar! He added classic denim skinny jeans from Penneys and tan brogues from Aldo and finished off the look with a leather and canvas bag.

Callum, 20

Hairdresser When we spotted him in Soho, we thought Callum looked very cool indeed. Using jeans and a jumper, both from River Island, as the base to his outfit, he finished the look off with a vintage camouflage j acket and bright red Dr Martens.

James, 23

Producer James gives a lesson in layering with this look, consisting of a Barbour jacket worn over a shirt and cardigan, both thrift store purchases, and a scarf from Topman. Rolled up All Saints jeans show off his tan Hudson shoes.

Juan , 23

His & Hers’ Holiday in the Country This autumn, I finally made the short leap by Stena Line ferry to Dublin to explore the Irish countryside, and I’m so glad I did! WORDS: Jan Myers

W

e chose to travel to Dublin by ferry, which takes longer than flying, but as we had a cabin we were able to sleep for most of the crossing, and while you can fly from Liverpool, I wanted to have the freedom of the road on the other side. Navigation has never been my strong point, nor planning a route, so we relied on my trusty new iPhone 5 and the map function served us beautifully (despite being classed as roaming, meaning I am not looking forward to my next phone bill!) Who knew that Ireland was so huge? Or is it the country lanes that make the drive seem endlessly beautiful, but long? Our first stop was Ballinasloe, where we made a beeline for the Dubarry Factory Shop, which offered up some amazing finds; mostlynot in my size, sadly, but my man did very well

His&hers TRAVEL

indeed. Then we headed on to the beautiful, picture postcard Adare, in County Limerick, for one night at the stunning Dunraven Arms Hotel, where we enjoyed probably the best roast beef in the world. Taking the road south to County Kerry, we stayed for two nights at The Europe Hotel and Resort, which is set in the most beautiful scenery, overlooking Rosscastle Lake, and close to the Ring of Kerry (which made my husband titter every time he saw a sign). This hotel has recently completed a €70M restoration, taking a classic 1970s architectural space, and creating a thing of breathtaking beauty. The Resort Spa, which is underground, leads out to the water’s edge and is just stunning. It also features an outdoor hydra-spa pool, which on a chilly night in November feels quite decadent. The staff were warm and welcoming and we especially loved the pony rides

taking in the woodland around the hotel. If you want epic sunrises and sunsets, superb food and a remarkable spa, then trust me, The Europe Hotel and Spa is where you need to be. I’m going back on a girls’ weekend to fully indulge in that spa! Stena Line operates four return crossings daily between Holyhead and Dublin Port. Cream of t

With a hectic round of meetings scheduled in London, His & Hers decided to mix business with pleasure by ending every working day at one of our favourite bars or restaurants.

A

s we were on a mission to clear our virtual desks before our round of meetings began, an early start on Virgin’s West Coast line was the obvious choice. The cost of a first class upgrade was quickly repaid with all of the essentials for business on the go (namely power sockets, WIFI and plentiful caffeine on tap). After a speedy journey into the capital and an enjoyable (if tiring) day of meetings, we checked into our hotel, the Double Tree by Hilton in London Victoria. Having chosen the hotel for its central location, less than a minute’s walk from Victoria tube station, we would happily have sacrificed a little comfort for convenience. However, we were delighted to be greeted with a light, airy and (very) spacious room. The hotel’s interior design is chic, understated and modern, with a large desk and incredibly comfortable chairs, making catching up on emails in your room a pleasure! On the first night of our stay, we checked out the

36

Double Tree’s restaurant, indulging in a delicious dinner. We were about to admit defeat after two generously proportioned courses, but when our waiter kindly offered to have desserts delivered to our room to give us a break between courses, we couldn’t resist this kind offer. Knowing that we had a comfortable and welcoming base in the form of the Double Tree to return to, we left the hotel with a spring in our step for our second day of meetings. A delicious breakfast at the perennially popular Riding House Café near Oxford Circus added to our positive mood and after powering through our London to do list, we set off to our second dinner engagement at Banca Ristorante Italiano, a chic restaurant which has been generating a lot of press interest for bringing the Milano ‘Aperitivo’ concept to Mayfair. The waiters explain that ‘aperitivo’ is a ritual deeply rooted in the Italian dining culture and found in Milan’s smartest bars and restaurants.

His&hers EATS out

the Capital

It is an early evening drink accompanied by a range of freshly prepared complimentary snacks and small dishes, eaten standing at the bar. From 5pm – 7.30pm on Tuesday to Friday, classic Italian Aperitivo are laid out across Banca’s expansive bar that spans the entire length of the restaurant. After an enjoyable and very sociable evening, featuring delicious Italian delicacies and some of the best Bellinis we’ve tasted, we returned to our hotel feeling relaxed and refreshed. Next on our London itinerary was a visit to House No. 19, where we soaked up the views over Portman Square while we caught up with the lovely team from Palm PR over plentiful cups of tea and light refreshments. The gentle hum of conversation and immaculate design scheme makes House No. 19 a truly relaxing place to conduct business and we can’t wait to make a return visit. On the last day of our London trip, we spent a little longer at the Double Tree hotel, having realised

that we were going to miss the friendly staff who’d looked after us so well throughout our visit. After sadly checking out of the hotel, which had begun to feel like home, we decided to make time for one last meal out, this time at London’s Malmaison. We’d hoped to tackle three courses, but after a delicious starter of pâté, followed by a perfect (but filling) steak, we conceded defeat, using the extra time we would have spent eating desserts to take a quick tour of the wine cellar and private dining area. The Malmaison’s wine list is impressive and we were charmed by the intimate, softly lit surroundings. A glance at the cocktail list left us yearning to stay a little longer, but our train back to Liverpool beckoned. We just hope that work gives us an excuse to pay another visit to London’s culinary hot-spots very soon! www.doubletree.hilton.com www.bancarestaurant.com homehouse.co.uk/the-house/house-19

Festive Fashion

You’ve seen it play host to London Fashion Week, but come Christmas, it’s time to swap the heels for blades and skate around Somerset House’s central courtyard on their ice rink. There’s still a fashion fix close by though; there’s also an exhibition, Valentino: Master of Couture, celebrating the life and work of the designer, on in the venue. www.somersethouse.org.uk

London is home to some of the world’s most famous department stores and it’s well worth a visit to see some of their spectacular window displays while you’re in the capital. If you love a bit of fashion history, there’s plenty on to inspire you. We all love a spot of retail therapy at the best of times, but under the glow of Christmas lights, it’s just that bit more festive. Oxford St, Regent St, Bond St, Carnaby St, Covent Garden and Westfield all have sparkly skies to enjoy while you shop.

A trip to London wouldn’t be complete without a musical. This Christmas it’s all about girl power as the musical of Spice Girls songs, Viva Forever, takes to the stage of the Piccadilly Theatre. A bit cheesy and very Christmassy – perfect!

Taste of the High Life

When we heard a rumour that there was a waiting list for Panoramic 34’s ultra-luxe afternoon tea, we made it our mission to investigate.

W

alking into Panoramic 34 is always a pleasure. No matter how many times you visit, the breathtaking views over Liverpool always stop you in your tracks. Happily, the bar and restaurant’s staff are so accustomed to this reaction from their guests that they hover politely, giving His & Hers a few moments to soak up the scenery before guiding us to our table. We opt for afternoon tea served with tea and coffee, which costs £20 per person, somehow managing to resist the temptation to order the champagne afternoon tea for £27.50 per person. The handmade finger sandwiches are incredibly light yet flavoursome, reminding us that even the humble sandwich can taste out of this world when prepared by the best chefs. Then we move on to the desserts, which are a feast for the eyes as well as the palette. All of the cakes have been freshly baked and the painstaking

attention to detail is evident in the perfect pastries, immaculately presented tiny tarts, macaroons which melt in the mouth and, of course, scones with clotted cream and jam. Panoramic 34’s afternoon teas are proving so popular with Christmas shoppers that customers are being advised to give plenty of notice when calling to make their bookings. They’ve also gone down so well with families that Cathy Frost, Panoramic 34’s Chief Executive, who has had a major role in the success of the restaurant, has added a children’s afternoon tea to the menu, priced at just £12.50. His & Hers was utterly captivated by our afternoon tea experience. The quality of the food and service was exemplary and we can’t wait to return to Panoramic 34 for another taste of the high life! Sunday best His & Hers discovers why no Sunday afternoon in Liverpool is complete without a visit to the enduringly popular Gusto.

G

usto Liverpool has been a favourite place for family celebrations over the years: it’s set in a great location, a heritage site overlooking The Albert Dock, with a fine view of the Tate Gallery, and it’s also a firm favourite with Liverpool players, Hollyoaks stars, Coleen Rooney and Dione Warwick to name but a few. The occasion this time was Sunday lunch with visitors from Scotland. The building is impressive on a grand scale, yet as we stepped through the door, we were welcomed into a restaurant that radiates warmth. The ‘Con Amici’ table (eating with friends) seats up to 40 and lively chatter and enthusiastic dining were evident across the room from where we were seated, which is part of the charm, that Gusto caters equally skilfully for large and small parties. We decided on the two course option and Leah, our friendly and knowledgeable waitress, was on hand to make sure we made informed choices. I had smoked salmon and dill rigatoni tossed with cream, peas and spinach. The other members of the party had: Baby scallops and prawn spaghetti tossed with tomato, anchovies and capers; Tagliatelle with

56

prawns, garlic and sweet chilli with tomato sauce finished with fresh lime and rocket; Hand rolled Italian meatballs in tomato sauce on a bed of spaghetti, and Romesco chicken salad with goat’s cheese and Rocket salad with Grana Padano. It was all equally delicious. The flavours were delicate and finely balanced and portions were generous. The meatballs were reported to be flavoursome – altogether first class; the fish dishes came with complementary sauces, devised to delight the taste buds. The salad combined flavours that made it taste quite out of the ordinary. It proved difficult to choose from the equally tempting dessert options, but we managed it somehow. The Tiramisu was a light concoction of loveliness. Lemon sorbet, a popular choice with our party was deliciously refreshing. Three scoop ice cream coupe with toasted almond flakes was a visual treat and tasted, we’re assured, as good as it looked. The “Bombolini” – homemade mini doughnuts with chocolate sauce and cream, apparently, defied adequate words of praise, and there’s no doubt we’ll be going back very soon for more. www.gustorestaurants.uk.com

Divine Dining

We take a fresh look at a restaurant renowned for its use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

I

t was Saturday night in the city and where better to celebrate than Liverpool Bar & Grill, which is located in the heart of the busy commercial district on Brunswick Street. This venue cannot help but create an impression as soon as you walk through the old banking hall doors and take in the impressive architecture. The bar is buzzing with a throng of people obviously enjoying a fabulous cocktail or two...the possibilities are as dazzling as the surroundings. The Bar & Grill is all about classic seasonal cooking, and that means using beef of the finest quality sourced from Limousin, Hereford and Angus cattle, naturally reared. This stylish and innovative restaurant will give you a warm welcome, whether it’s a business lunch, dinner with friends, or simply visiting the bar where celebrities can often be spotted by the eagle eyed. We were a party of five. Two of us chose Chicken Liver Parfait with pear and apple chutney, with toasted brioche for our starter and because the portions were so generous, I shared mine with the person who hadn’t ordered a starter (and could not help but look at the parfait rather wistfully) as I attacked it with relish. The French onion soup was declared a winner; it’s one of my favourites. The Calves Liver Mash, with crispy bacon tasted as good as it sounds. The Scottish Mussels Cider, smoked

bacon & parsley dish was a strong contender for the starter of choice – it’s a winning mix of flavours, and then, pausing only to refill our wine glasses, with a subtle red, we were ready for the mains. His & Hers has enjoyed several visits to this restaurant lately: I chose Sea Bass with mint yoghurt and hand cut chips last time because it combines some of my favourite ingredients, but this time I ordered Tuna au poivre with lemon and béarnaise sauce which was equally delicious. It was madly busy on a Saturday evening, so you need to book in advance. There’s a buzz of conversation all around and it is obvious that people love coming to this venue because of the quality of the food and the elegance of the surroundings. The service is friendly and efficient and we had a great evening. The food does not disappoint and you can drop in for lunch to help you stay calm through the pre-Christmas shopping frenzy. www.individualrestaurants.com
