EDITOR’S WELCOME

THE HOLIDAY SEASON ISSUE

Welcome

to the Christmas Holiday Edition, which is bursting with beautiful gift ideas, fashion inspiration for the party season, plus a festive recipe penned by our celebrity food and drink columnist, Marco Pierre White. If preparing for the Christmas holidays has left you feeling more frazzled than festive, I hope that picking up this month’s free gift, a chic nail polish worth £14 from Illamasqua, will serve as a much-needed treat for female readers. And for male readers, why not make snapping up one of these polishes for somebody special your good deed for the day? Hopefully they’ll be so grateful that they’ll be at the front of the queue to pick up our upcoming free men’s grooming products for you! While working on this issue, I was honoured to meet the legendary news reporter, Kate Adie, who gave an inspiring speech about women’s evolving role in the workplace while promoting her new book. I was also delighted to interview regular His & Hers contributor, Theo Paphitis, about the stellar growth of his high-street lingerie chain, Boux Avenue. This was swiftly followed by interviews with design icon Zandra Rhodes, the ‘Queen of Denim’ Donna Ida and the lovely Maureen and Lee, the founders of jewellery brand, Mococo, which has been one of the North’s biggest retail success stories of 2013. A big thank you is due to designer, Dan Perry, stylists Hester Brodie and Bryan Harrop and writers Jean Hill and Hannah Ramsay for working so hard on this issue while I was dashing between interviews. I’d also like to say a huge festive thank you to everyone who has read, contributed to, advertised in or in any way supported His & Hers magazine in 2013. It really is enormously appreciated and I can’t wait to toast you all with something suitably sparkling as we see in the New Year!

FIVE MINUTES WITH THE ‘

JEAN QUEEN’ DONNA IDA THORNTON Self-confessed denim addict Donna Ida Thornton shares her top tips for finding the perfect pair of jeans. WORDS: EMMA HILL

W

hen I spoke to Donna Ida Thornton, the denim guru was preparing for a whirlwind visit to McArthurGlen’s Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet, where she was unveiling her pop-up store selling her own IDA jeans, as well as a carefully selected edit of her favourite premium denim labels from around the world. A smiling Donna said: “I’m really excited about the collaboration because I think Cheshire Oaks is fantastic.” She laughingly confessed that she was well aware of most people’s love hate relationship with jeans, adding: “Everyone likens it to shopping for swimwear because if you get it right, you feel great, but it can be a stressful process. “My advice is to be open minded and try new styles from time to time. Set aside thirty minutes to make sure you have time to try on everything you want to and focus on the styles that will flatter your figure.” In addition to collaborating with Cheshire Oaks, Donna has been working hard on the development of her website, which will be more user friendly and feature packed by the New Year. She explained: “I want to keep the momentum and maintain the sense of excitement about the brand. Companies are like

sharks and have to keep moving or they die!” Donna is keen to work on more pop-up projects throughout 2014 and to continue her collaboration with the McArthurGlen Designer Outlet whose centres sold more than five items of denim-wear last year (that’s nearly 600 for every hour of the year). She’s hoping to use her pop-ups to meet as many of her customers as possible and to share her advice. However for those of us who haven’t been fortunate enough to benefit from Donna’s one-to-one advice yet, she’s condensed her top tips for finding figureflattering jeans. www.mcarthurglen.com. www.donnaida.com

Donna Ida Thornton’s 5 denim styling tips Boyish Shape

Boyish shapes tend to have slim silhouettes and can usually wear most styles of jean. You can get away with detailing such as zips and hardware; adding detail to the seat, like back pockets, is particularly good for you as it will add shape to your bottom.

Apple Shape

Apple shaped girls will have the legs to carry off slim jeans, but might need to disguise their more problematic areas. Try a stretchy straight leg style, with a mid or low rise waist. Your bottom may be a little flat, so give it shape with a pair of jeans with plenty of back pocket det

Pear Shape

Accentuate your small waist and gorgeous wider hips by highlighting your greatest assets and even out your proportions. Opt for high-waisted denim styles which will cinch you in and draw the eye towards your middle. You

can also try a bootcut or wide leg style, which will skim over your hips, balancing out your body proportions with the kick at the bottom of the leg.

Petite or Long Legged Tips

Petite figures generally have beautiful proportions, just in a smaller package! High rise styles will elongate your legs and cinch-in your waist to show off your perfect proportions. If you’re long-legged, stick to mid and low rise styles, in a longer length.

Curvy Shape

If you’re curvy like Scarlett Johannsen or Christina Hendricks, try to stick to styles that flatter your natural shape rather than detract from it with plenty of structure and a little bit of give. Stick to a heavy weighted denim with a minimal amount of stretch; a lighter weight with too much give will not provide the structure that you need.

KATE MOSS IS UNVEILED AS THE NEW FACE OF ELEVENPARIS Just days after Kate Moss received her Special Recognition award, honouring her 25-year career at the British Fashion Awards, His & Hers was sent a sneak preview of her new campaign for ELEVENPARIS.

F

ounded by two friends, ELEVENPARIS is a Parisian prêtà-porter brand, which has been making waves on the international fashion scene since 2003. Following successful campaigns featuring rock-star, Lenny Kravitz, the godfather of punk, Iggy Pop, and it-girl, Daisy Lowe, to name but a few, ELEVENPARIS unveiled supermodel Kate Moss as the face of its new SS14 campaign. Portraying the perfect balance between sophisticated fashion and grunge, ELEVENPARIS felt that Kate Moss was the ideal choice to front its latest campaign. Shot by renowned fashion photographer, Craig McDean, who has worked with the likes of Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior, the campaign features Kate Moss in a series of portraits that are designed to perfectly present the brand’s new SS14 collection, which is inspired by the ‘90s and crosses the border between grunge and sports chic. Dan Cohen, co-founder and joint chief executive of ELEVENPARIS, commented: “For us, Kate Moss was a natural choice to be the new face of the brand. “Her unique style and her close relationships with the music industry perfectly sum up what we try to convey through our collections.” To shop the new SS14 collection, visit: www.elevenparis.com/en/

JOANNE WATKINSON’S GUIDE TO CHRISTMAS PARTY SEASON DRESSING Stylist and personal shopper Joanne Watkinson shares her insider secrets for weathering the festive season in style.

T

he party season, the time of year when we brush off our dancing shoes and drag out our glittery cocktail dresses, right? Wrong! Step away from the cliché of Yuletide fashion and take a more modern approach. While traditional fabrics like velvet and lace are still on the menu, the look is very different. Opt for sharp tailoring in festive shades of berry and wine. Trousers are now totally accepted as eveningwear and there are some amazing options around. Look out for tux details for evening and if black trousers are too close to your workwear, leather trousers are a great option. The only rules are: wear them as skinny as you dare and pair with a delicate shoe, pointed courts and single strap sandals look great. Skirts are back in a big way; while kilts and PVC are the more difficult versions, circle skirts, with their waist shrinking proportions are perfect for festive parties; look out for winter bouquet or brocade prints; the very fashion forward will team them with strappy heels and a cropped mohair sweater. While sparkles aren’t to be totally ruled out, pairing them with less obvious fabrics such as jersey keeps the look chic; sequinned jackets can be resurrected but wear with simple basics, like black skinny jeans. Accessories are a great way of spicing up a Christmas party look. Take inspiration from Dolce & Gabbana’s autumn / winter collection and look for bejewelled statement necklaces set in gold or baroque-influenced earrings with accents of ruby red. This season even shoes have been adorned with precious looking stones with textured fabrics like velvet and satin, perfect for party-ready feet! www.joanne@joannewatkinson.co.uk

HIS&HERS LIFESTYLE

How Theo Paphitis is revolutionising the contents of your underwear drawer Dragons’ Den star Theo Paphitis talks about shaking up the high street with his lingerie chain, Boux Avenue. WORDS: EMMA HILL

R

egular readers will know that retail magnate Theo Paphitis is no stranger to this magazine, having given us a series of interviews since launching his high-street lingerie chain Boux Avenue in 2011. Having revived the fortunes of both Contessa and La Senza before selling his shares in these businesses in 2006, Theo launched Boux Avenue at a time when the outlook for high-street retailers was still looking fairly gloomy. However, the lingerie chain has grown rapidly both in the UK and overseas. I met Theo at the launch of a new Boux Avenue store at Manchester’s Arndale Centre (one of 21 such stores nationwide). The new shop looked immaculate, with the discreet luxurious design touches and polite and professional team that, along with the lingerie’s surprisingly modest price point, has attracted customers in their droves. Theo said: “We’ve been searching for a site like this one ever since we opened in the Trafford

30

Centre, but it takes time to find the right space even in these recessionary times. We’re delighted with this highly visible site, which was previously a Jane Norman store.” Boux Avenue lingerie, PJs and slippers have quietly been staging a takeover of the nation’s bedrooms thanks to their immaculate finish and low cost. As Theo says, why buy budget underwear along with the frozen chicken at the supermarket when for the same price you can buy something special which will be tissue wrapped and immaculately presented in his stores? Theo added: “We had an idea about how we wanted Boux to be – it was about getting all the details right, from the point of sale to the design of the website – and we’ve made that vision a reality.” He concluded: “We still have the capacity to go further, opening more Boux Avenue stores in the UK and overseas.” Sounds like great news for Theo & for lingerie lovers everywhere. www.bouxavenue.com

WOMEN’S FASHION

STREET SMART This autumn, His & Hers’ fashion writer, Hannah Ramsay, paid a visit to London Fashion Week to see what you were wearing while watching the shows.

LARRY, 28, DIGITAL DESIGNER

Larry’s tailored ASOS jacket was livened up with vibrant fuchsia trousers, also from ASOS. He paired it with a classic white shirt from Ben Sherman and finished the look with leather Zara shoes.

32

NATHAN, 30, FASHION BLOGGER

Nathan tapped into this season’s tartan trend with his checked shirt from Pendleton. He matched it with red Topman trousers and an H&M jacket. He accessorised with shoes from The Kooples and a satchel from The Cambridge Satchel Company.

JAMES, 24, STUDENT

James chose an all-black outfit of Zara shirt and Topman pants to allow his bespoke floral jacket to do the talking! He also wore bespoke patent slipper shoes.

ASHLEIGH, 19, FASHION STUDENT

I loved the contrast of Ashleigh’s classic camel trench coat against her neon ASOS dress. She kept out the cold with a jumper from Topshop and finished the look with metallic strappy heels from Dune.

FREDERICA, 21, FASHION MERCHANDISE ASSISTANT

Dressed in head-to-toe Zara, Frederica looked great in the colour of the season, pink. She teamed the striking coat with a crisp white shirt, black cigarette pants and leather ankle boots.

ABISOLA, 23, FASHION WRITER Abisola went for the head-to-toe block colour look, matching a cobalt H&M jacket with Hobbs trousers in the same hue. She kept the rest of the outfit simple with a white shirt and nude shoes, both from Primark.

London’s leading bloggers face the ultimate Liverpool style challenge This autumn, three of London’s best-known bloggers visited Liverpool for the first time and His & Hers set them the ultimate style challenge.

F

PRINCE CASSIUS STRIKES A POSE

38

ashion lovers may have spotted the high-profile bloggers Prince Cassius, Jaime ‘London Boy’ and Leeroy Dawkins reporting from the front rows of London’s biggest fashion shows, with their fingers flying across their iPads at the speed of light. There’s no doubt that these fashion aficionados have the inside track when it comes to London’s style scene, but could they earn their style stripes in Liverpool? When His & Hers heard that Liverpool ONE in association with Think Publicity would be bringing the bloggers to what we like to think of as the nation’s real style capital for two days, His & Hers set them the ultimate style challenge – to join us on a tour of three mystery stores where we’d challenge them to choose and change into an outfit worthy of fashion royalty in under 30 minutes. Prince Cassius was the first to step up to the plate. We let the TV presenter and blogger, who was turning heads with his immaculately coiffured big hair and sharp style, loose in Liverpool fashionistas’ favourite, Flannels. Despite taking some time to take stock of the wide array of key menswear pieces on offer, Prince Cassius clearly relished the challenge of finding an immaculate outfit in moments. Having

JAIME ‘LONDON BOY’ scoured the rails, he made his selection rapidly, emerging from the changing rooms looking fabulous in formalwear. After congratulating Prince Cassius on his choice of outfit, which we felt would turn heads in any city, we hastily ushered Jaime ‘London Boy’ into Reiss, Liverpool ONE. Jaime, who was named the eighth top fashion insider by the Daily Telegraph, is frequently papped at the fashion shows and is known for his immaculate attire which pairs classical tailoring with quirky high fashion touches. Jaime had soon spotted a nicely tailored blue suit, which fitted him perfectly. He livened up his look with burgundy accessories and smart dark jeans which added a dash of informality to his ensemble. Having hailed Jaime as another victor in our style challenge, it was Leeroy’s turn to show off his fashion credentials. We moved on to Hugo Boss, Liverpool ONE, where Leeroy injected a dash of colour into our challenge, spotting a blue ensemble which he dressed down with a delectably soft leather jacket. Once again, Leeroy

LEEROY DAWKINS earned style points for spotting key pieces that fitted him perfectly in seconds. Like his companions, he turned heads in Liverpool ONE as he modelled his outfit and proved that sometimes less is more when putting together a stylish ensemble. After the three bloggers had completed their challenge, leaving the His & Hers team thoroughly impressed, they paused to tell us how much they’d enjoyed their time in a city that had inspired them with its style. We hope this will be the first of many such London / Liverpool collaborations. The Latest Anti-Ageing News from the Karidis Medispa His & Hers joined our friends at the Karidis Medispa to hear how they used the latest techniques to restore Ann Blundell’s youthful glow on Channel 4’s ‘How Not to Get Old.’

A

few weeks ago, His & Hers was granted access to a presentation by Mr Alex Karidis and Ann Blundell, the patient he treated on the popular Channel 4 series, ‘How Not to Get Old’, presented by Ann Richardson and Louise Redknapp. The series focused on a wide range of tips, tricks and treatments to stay looking young, exploring both the surgical and non-surgical options available. Ann Blundell spoke about how premature ageing had left her lacking in confidence, talking us through her treatment by Mr Karidis (which consisted of a face lift and endoscopic browlift). She said the low point had been the recovery time following any surgical procedure and the high point had been being mistaken for her daughter when she returned to work just a few days after her treatment. After Mr Karidis and Ann had answered questions from guests, we were treated to a sneak preview of the Karidis Medispa’s stateof-the-art new technology. We were particularly intrigued by VelaShape III, the third-generation of the globally acclaimed VelaShape devices, which provide the ultimate body contouring treatments. It’s a non-surgical treatment with no downtime and is popular with those keen to target stubborn areas on the arms, back, thighs, bottom and waist which are resistant to exercise. The results can be seen immediately, then become progressively more noticable over the following two weeks. Mr Karidis said: “This exciting new development allows us now to offer patients the latest in ultimate non-surgical inch-loss

by combining three proven modalities. I am pleased to offer this fast solution for common body complaints with no downtime at all at both of our Karidis clinics in London and Liverpool.” VelaShape III treatments start from £350 per treatment and are available at the Karidis Medispa within the Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar. www.karidis.co.uk

Their delicate scent, which evokes the fresh fragrance of real Christmas trees, and the gentle glow of candlelight was adding festive sparkle to our working weeks long before we began thinking about acquiring an actual Christmas tree! The Pine & Eucalyptus Collection features candles, a scent diffuser and a room spray (with prices for the collection ranging from £34 to £260). Alternatively, there’s the Blue Spruce

Deluxe Candle, which will also bring the fragrance of winter woodland drifting gently into your home. Limited edition stockings, ornaments and Christmas crackers were also available from Jo Malone London stores at the time of going to press. However, as these festive treats tend to sell out swiftly, we’d recommend visiting the Jo Malone London website to check availability: www.jomalone.co.uk The nearest Jo Malone London stockists are within the Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar and within the Metquarter, Liverpool, and at 14 St Michael’s Row, The Grosvenor Centre, Chester.

The group have salons in London, Oxford, Brighton, Reading and Liverpool. We spoke to Mark regarding the new service in his Liverpool salon. “We were getting more and more phone calls enquiring about extensions, so I decided to get in touch with Dianne to see if we could provide a service within the Electric salon. Our stylists are highly trained in all aspects of cutting and colouring and many work with extensions already, but I was interested in the Dianne Marshall Extensions because the word on the street is that they are the best available.” “It’s a busy time for us, said Dianne Marshall, “ The brand is going from strength to strength with a much wider range of salons now being trained by us and stocking our hair. I’ve also been acting as a consultant to Charlotte Crosby from Geordie Shore /

Celebrity Big Brother, who’s launched her own range of extensions called Charlotte Letitia (available at: www.officIalcharlottecrosby.com ) “An invitation from Mark Woolley at Electric was a very welcome surprise and one that we immediately embraced. On November 1st we launched the Dianne Marshall extension service within Electric at Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar. The clientele of the store expect the very best hair extensions and expertise to match the opulence of their surroundings and we will certainly be providing that.” Dianne Marshall has been in the business of hair extensions for over 26 years, shooting to fame with Kate Winslet’s extensions in the film Titanic; she then went on to work with Gwyneth Paltrow in ‘Shakespeare in Love’ and many other leading ladies. THE HOUSE BEAUTY SPA WINS A HIGHLY COVETED GUINOT CROWN AWARD The His & Hers team has been raising a glass to our friends at The House Beauty Spa who are celebrating the latest in a string of awards wins this winter.

W

e make it our mission to champion local businesses that consistently deliver excellence to their customers and were delighted to hear that one of our favourite places, The House Beauty Spa, had been awarded the coveted Guinot Crown Award for a second year running. The Crown Award is given to Guinot spas that show outstanding commitment to quality of knowledge, treatment and experience. It recognises the very best in the beauty industry and The House is the only spa in Liverpool and only one of 50 in the UK to be celebrated in this way. Being partial to a little spa treat, we’re smitten with the luxurious surroundings of both House spas in Mather Avenue and Childwall Park Avenue and appreciate the fact that the therapists are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about making your experience memorable. Even if

it’s a simple shellac manicure, a spot of Lycon Waxing or HD brows that you are nipping in for, it is so tempting to indulge in a little retreat to the famous Orangery. I have found myself booking for a cheeky little pamper package just so I can stay for most of the day - but then when you have the array of treatments on offer from Guinot, Elemis and Aromatherapy Associates, there is just so darn much to chose from. Thank goodness they have the best beauty experts in the business to help guide you through the extensive treatment list. If you haven’t had the delight of a visit yet, we’d highly recommend adding a day, or even just a pamper hour, at one of these award-winning spas to your winter wish list. Five minutes with

PERMANENT COSMETICS EXPERT, CAROLINE MORGAN With the demand for permanent cosmetics rising sharply, His & Hers couldn’t resist the chance to find out how Caroline Morgan of Cosmetology established herself as one of the leaders in this highly competitive field.

“P

ermanent Cosmetics is a serious business. My technique although very natural looking and designed to give subtle results is ultimately ‘permanent’ so my clients need to trust me implicitly”, said Caroline, adding: “I trained extensively in permanent make-up and medical micro-pigmentation with Natural Enhancement, London, regarded as the leaders in their industry.” “As well as basic aesthetic make-up procedures I trained in advanced lips, brows, and eyeliners as well as becoming a specialist in colour correction and medical treatments. “My training in medical micro-pigmentation means that I can help patients post cancer with treatments such as areola and nipple restoration and help alopecia sufferers with hair revival techniques. I also work with clients who have scarring to camouflage damaged skin. This is a hugely rewarding part of my role as an Advanced Micro-pigmentation Specialist. Caroline, who has clinics in Liverpool and London, is working with Sefton Borough Council to eradicate some of the more ‘questionable’ practitioners around. “Currently anyone can set to work on your face by simply buying a machine after a one day training course and starting a business in their kitchen. I hope to change this very soon; the new laws will ensure that anyone offering permanent cosmetic treatments adheres to strict clinical guidelines.” Testimonials from happy clients are plentiful but a powerful one is from 67-year-old A&E sister, Victoria Tweedie, a long-standing client of Caroline’s: “I’ve seen first hand what happens when permanent cosmetics go wrong, I’ve had girls into Casualty with shocking infections from needles and

irreversible damage. As I was losing thickness in my eyebrows, I looked into permanent cosmetics but was nervous after what I’d seen in my hospital, so I began extensive research into finding the right person for the job, I looked into qualifications, hygiene and referrals. Luckily I found the right person, it was Caroline and I’ve never looked back!” To book a consultation or appointment, call: 07545569182 or visit: www.cosmetology.uk.com

HIS&HERS FOOD

MARCO PIERRE WHITE’S CULINARY OBSESSIONS

His & Hers’ expert food and drinks columnist, internationally renowned chef and restaurateur Marco Pierre White, shares his party season survival tips, plus an indulgent recipe for a dessert with a difference.

W

ith restaurants across the North West, including Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill in Liverpool’s Hotel Indigo, and at DoubleTree by Hilton Chester, plus Marco’s New York Italian in Hoylake, Marco Pierre White is an expert on serving up something special over the party season. His & Hers persuaded Marco to share his unique slant on all things food, not to mention a top secret dessert recipe. The term “party season” can instill excitement and fear in folk in equal measure. On one hand, some relish the challenge of pulling together a soiree for their nearest and dearest, while others positively shiver at the thought. As someone with many years of experience hosting events and gatherings for family, friends and diners, I’m often asked how I do it, and I always refer back to that old proverb – ‘keep calm and carry on’. A party is about enjoying some time with those you care about. It should never be a chore. It’s about planning; knowing what type of party you want to have; and setting yourself realistic

50

limitations. Manage your expectations because it is, after all, simply a party. It is very exciting to see a flurry of bookings for Christmas and New Year parties at all three of my North West restaurants. Our festive menus this year are very special indeed, and I’m confident will delight all those who try them. It is imperative to me that we give our diners a party that will live in their memory for a long time to come. In other news, I would just like to take a moment to thank the staff at my Liverpool restaurant for their tirelessly hard work during my recent visit. As always, it was a pleasure returning to this fantastic metropolis on the banks of the Mersey, especially having the chance to chat to its charismatic folk. Every Liverpudlian has a story to tell, and regales it in such an animated way. I adore the passion that exudes from them. Until next time, do enjoy the festive season, and if you are having friends over, why not show your love by preparing my special caramelised dessert - the perfect way of treating the ones you love and lifting the spirits during the cold winter months.

MARCO’S CARAMELISED AUTUMN DESSERT (SERVES 6) Ingredients: 2kg firm red apples 2kg firm pears 3 fresh bay leaves 20 pink peppercorns, half crushed, half for decoration 4 star anise 6 thin slices of brioche 4 vanilla pods split 150g sugar 100g sugar 100ml cream Crushed hazelnuts Red currents

METHOD:

Firstly, peel and cork the apples and pears, cut into thin slices. Heat a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the sugar evenly, so it cooks evenly and will not burn. Heat until transparent, take off the heat and add the butter. Next, add the anise, crushed peppercorns, bay leaves, vanilla pods and the apples and pears. Toss in the caramel and place on and off the heat making sure it does not burn. Next, add the cream, return to the heat until the apples and pears are soft, but not mush. Toast the brioche under a high heat grill until golden brown on each side. To serve, place the apples and pears layered on the brioche, pour the sauce over, and add the anise bay leaves and remaining peppercorns to decorate. Sprinkle the hazelnuts over the dish and add the red currents to garnish. For more information visit www. mpwrestaurants.com

HIS&HERS STYLE

A MMAGICALL MOVE FOR MOCOCO His & Hers has followed the Mococo story with excitement, from the company’s launch with a mere £250 investment, to the opening of its stunning new flagship store in the heart of Liverpool.

W

hen Maureen Hooson launched Mococo in 2006, she was armed with just £250 to invest in stock, plus 22 years of experience in the jewellery industry. She hosted a series of jewellery parties, ultimately raising the capital to open her first store. Soon Maureen and her husband, Lee Hooson, who also has a formidable background in business, were working together to grow their company to the powerhouse that it is today with five high-street stores and a website which is fast becoming a must-visit for jewellery lovers around the world. I was fortunate enough to be invited to interview Maureen and Lee just days before the opening of their chic new Liverpool store within the Metquarter. Lee Hooson told us: “We owe an awful lot to the city of Liverpool. Our customers here have been loyal to us and have supported us as our company has grown, so we felt that they deserved the very best. We want the new store to be a special place where people can sit and relax at the champagne bar and feel like they’re in a stylish jewellery department store which showcases the very best brands.” Lee and Maureen have invested heavily in their Liverpool store, which showcases best-selling brands like Chlobo, Shaun Leane, Thomas Sabo, Pandora, Swarovski, Diamonfire and Nomination beautifully. The new store is located on the ground floor of the Metquarter and replaces a much smaller Mococo store which was also situated within the shopping centre. Maureen was clearly every bit as excited as her husband about the new store launch, which she said would provide the perfect place to showcase their new Mococo jewellery collection. For years,

52

customers have been asking for Mococo jewellery, and when the couple bumped into a leading jewellery designer who was keen to work with them, it seemed like fate was intervening. The launch of Mococo’s own-brand range will fill the gap in the market for premium pieces at an affordable price point. Lee explained that after waiting 20 years to finally buy Maureen the perfect engagement ring, he’s conscious that couples can’t always afford to blow the budget when they start their lives together. However, they still want jewellery that feels really special, so they’ve focused heavily on design, quality and value when creating their own range. As my interview with the couple drew to a close, with Maureen and Lee hinting that two more store openings are in the pipeline for early 2014, I remarked that they must be working incredibly hard, at which point the pair chuckled and Lee exclaimed: “We get to work with each other every day doing something we love. It’s not like a job –it’s great fun!” His & Hers heartily recommends that you pay a visit to the new Mococo store built on hard work, fun and a genuine passion for jewellery. We were lucky enough to be given a sneak preview of the store just before the opening in early December and were bowled over by the way our favourite brands are displayed. Our top tip is to make your way to the back of the store where you’ll find Maureen’s jewellery finds displayed near the champagne bar. Here you’ll find some truly beautiful, delicate pieces with surprisingly modest price tags. And don’t be too surprised if you see a lot more of these pretty accessories on these pages over the coming months. The House Beauty Spa’s Book Club with

Kate Adie

World famous news correspondent Kate Adie paid a visit to the Albert Dock to talk about her new book, ‘Fighting on the Home Front’. WORDS: JEAN HILL

T

he House Beauty Spa Book Club events are always eagerly anticipated: this time a delicious lunch at Gusto’s, a breath-taking venue, with panoramic views of the Albert Dock, and a very special guest author. It’s a dazzling combination (great food and a cultural treat) and never more so than when it’s Kate Adie, world famous news correspondent who has written a fascinating book: ‘Fighting on the Home Front, the legacy of women in World War One’. Kate Adie has great presence: a powerful voice with substantial range. There’s a buzz of excitement as she arrives and she does not disappoint. She’s reported on wars all over the world and survived bombs and bullets falling around her. The lasting impression is that she embodies total equality of the sexes. She wouldn’t describe herself as a female war correspondent, but rather a person who reported from war zones. Kate Adie explained why we owe so much to those

54

intrepid women, that flocked to do ‘men’s’ jobs, during the First World War. There was a tragedy unfolding as young men were called up in their thousands, to be consigned to far away battle fields. Women, at this point in history, were considered to be frail and not capable of concentrated physical effort or intellectual brilliance, but they stepped into the breach. This book is a celebration of women that, in the absence of men, became welders, or worked in munitions factories, or engaged in engineering, or trained in nursing or first aid, and travelled to field hospitals where they transformed the quality of care that the wounded received. It was a truly inspiring event, to be mindful of what we owe a generation of women who kept the home fires burning and, in the process, changed attitudes and created opportunities for future generations of women. HIS&HERS FASHION

Zandra Rhodes’ Fashion Mission Zandra Rhodes discusses her mission to keep fashion, fun, affordable and, above all, colourful.

W

hen an invitation landed to interview fashion legend Zandra Rhodes during her visit to one of my favourite stores, Boudoir Boutique, I hastily cleared my diary. Zandra Rhodes has been shaking up the fashion scene ever since the ‘70s when she helped put London on the fashion map with her bold, irreverent style. Today, she may be a CBE, but Zandra’s clearly not ready to become part of fashion’s old guard or to retire from the design process. Zandra’s client list includes Kylie Minogue, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Kelly Osborne, Paris Hilton, Bianca Jagger, Elizabeth Taylor, Diana Princess of Wales, Helen Mirren, Jackie Onassis, Tom Ford and Anna Sui. While the designer is still creating pieces that are coveted by the world’s best-dressed women (and a few very stylish men) she’s every bit as focused on creating fashion and accessories lines that are accessible to all. When I arrived for my interview along with my mother, who has followed Zandra’s career since the ‘70s, we were joined by three generations of the family that owns Boudoir Boutique and by customers of all ages who were queuing up to have their Zandra Rhodes handbags signed. The youngest shoppers were in their teens and the oldest in their 70s, proving that the designer has managed to pull off that incredibly rare feat of staying relevant to fashion lovers of all ages. Zandra explained: “I’m designing as much as ever and have worked very hard to make my new collections colourful and affordable.”

56

The designer added that she was delighted to be selling her accessories through Boudoir Boutique, continuing her long-running collaboration with the store, concluding: “I hope people will come here for my bags and ‘phone covers – it’s a brilliant store and the owner’s so on the ball – I love coming here.” I’d highly recommend a visit to Boudoir’s handbag section – who knows, you just might spot a fashion legend shopping there, too! www.boudoir-boutique.com

HOPSKOTCH

Welcome to Hopskotch, Liverpool’s most intriguing new hideout

L

iverpool has no shortage of brightly lit venues like San Carlo and Restaurant Bar & Grill, where diners flock to see and be seen. But when you want somewhere a little more intimate, it has to be the newly opened Hopskotch. Breathing life back into a former retail space on Mathew Street, the owners of Hopskotch have clearly invested time and money on an eclectic contemporary design scheme which provides a pleasing counterpoint some of the city’s chain-owned bars, restaurants and coffee shops. The quirky, thoughtful design touches make you feel that you’re entering somewhere a little special, but the polite, informal style of staff and guests alike will put you at your ease, providing reassurance that there’s nothing pretentious about this hidden gem. Hopskotch is a street kitchen and bar, so there’s plenty of no-nonsense comfort food, like delicious ribs and tacos and perfect fries on offer. His & Hers was impressed by the selection of tapas we ordered and at just £10

58

for three, we were pleasantly surprised by the price. Expect to find a mix of businesspeople holding informal meetings or taking advantage of Hopskotch’s free WIFI, stylish students and guests staying in the hotel above the venue. If it’s comfort food and a few drinks in a thoroughly comfortable environment you’re seeking, Hopskotch won’t disappoint. However, if you’d like something a little more rock and roll, it’s well worth visiting the Hopskotch website which is regularly updated with a list of dates when there’ll be live music at the venue. They also have regular offers, such as two roast dinners for a mere £12, which are perfect for those occasions when you fancy hanging up your oven gloves, but don’t want to run up a big bill in a restaurant. Overall, if it’s laid-back drinks or dining you desire, we really can’t fault Hopskotch, a welcoming home from home for Liverpool residents and visitors to the city alike. hopskotchliverpool.com

HIS&HERS FOOD

COMFORT FOOD WITH THE WOW FACTOR His & Hers finds shelter from the cold and some of the city’s most creative comfort food at Wagamama, Liverpool ONE.

M

y first experience of Wagamama’s blend of Japanese inspired, pan-Asian cuisine was at the Printworks in Manchester. My friend ordered a selection of vegetarian side dishes to share and I ate rather more than my fair share because it was nectar, soul food: it was sublime. Needless to say when an invitation came from Wagamama, Liverpool ONE, to come and try their new winter menu, I paused only to grab my rain-coat. If you haven’t been, go. The staff want your visit to be a brilliant experience: they are pleased to explain the menu and any variation in the order the food is delivered to your table. We smiled a good deal because the person serving us was having so much fun explaining the food options. On to the side dishes: duck gyoza and pulled pork gyoza. The dipping sauces meant it took a little longer to devour these delicate dumplings, but not much. I’ve never tasted better and they’re perfectly matched to intensify the flavour of the shredded meat. My colleague’s main: Mandarin and sesame chicken salad is a classic with Thai basil, mange tout, coriander and mint dressing. I opted for Mahi Mahi curry (part of the new winter menu): grilled fish, sweet potato, red and green peppers and mushrooms with coriander cress. I can’t begin to describe how fine

60

WORDS: JEAN HILL

this was. The sauce was spicy yet subtle, a fusion of flavours: nothing overwhelmed the taste of perfectly grilled fish. We doubted there was room for dessert, but passion fruit cheesecake and sweet ginger and apple gyoza were on offer, and it seemed churlish not to include the whole eating experience. Simply divine. Prices are reasonable, the curry was around £10, and side dishes and desserts are around the £5 mark. If it’s comfort food with the wow factor you want, don’t delay – reach for your coat. wagamama.com

HIS&HERS TRAVEL

FROM WEDDING BELLS TO LUXURY HOTELS

From wedding bells to luxury hotels, a weekend trip to London exceeded all of Nicola Pink’s expectations

W

ith my friend’s wedding being just around the corner, what better excuse was there for a mini break? Having only visited London a handful of times, usually on day-long business trips, I had never seen the city in its full beauty. However, this time I was able to relax and unwind, during a weekend filled with romantic celebrations as my part of my friend Kate’s nuptials. We journeyed from Liverpool to London Euston via Virgin Trains. We travelled first class at 10am on a Friday morning and took advantage of the free WIFI access, in addition to the wider assortment of complimentary refreshments including bacon or sausages sandwich and a substantial amount of English Breakfast tea! Futhermore, the service from the staff was second to none. The Virgin rail is a relatively short-haul journey that lasts approximately two hours and as a result of the comfortable amenities Virgin has to offer, our train ride was simply faultless. When we arrived in the capital, my husband and I checked into the Malmasion Hotel in Hoxton, which is set back in the peaceful grounds of Charterhouse Square. The parkland location radiated with tranquillity,

62

featuring gated gardens and cobbled footpaths. It is the perfect setting for those wanting to avoid the frantic scurry of the West End; even heavy rain couldn’t spoil it. On arrival, we were greeted by the hotel’s reception staff who were attentive and accommodating. Situated around us was the spectacular lounge area that was packed with quirky and contemporary attributes, which were intensified through the impressive low key lightening. Malmasion are renowned for their sultry décor and ultra-modern interiors, without prioritising style over comfort. Our Executive Suite on the second floor was large, trendy and full of gadgets, living up to expectations of an executive suite. My personal favourite was the fantastic bathroom that featured a monsoon shower and another great touch was the toiletry gifts that featured labels saying ‘take me home, I dare you’. As for the bed, it was possibly the most comfortable one we have ever stayed in! Although we did not eat at the hotel’s popular Stripbar & Steak restaurant, as we had already arranged to dine out with friends, we were fortunate enough to enjoy a delicious continental breakfast. It definitely set us up perfectly for a wedding and the obligatory dancing into the small hours… In fact, our weekend away was everything we could have wished for and it felt like we were a million miles away from home (in a good way). We would definitely return to the hotel due to its great location and impressive setting and even though taxis are few and far between in London, we even managed to get a rickshaw to take us home on our first night! For us, the weekend was a chance to stay in new places, try new things and experience a first class style of mini break, which has certainly left us wanting more. www.virgintrains.co.uk, www.malmaison.com

The award-winning Bierkeller celebrates a hugely successful 2013 in style In Bierkeller’s first year of business, the bar has established itself as one of Liverpool’s hottest venues, which provided the perfect excuse to do what Bierkeller does best and host a party to remember.

64

T

he award-winning Bierkeller Complex in Liverpool ONE celebrated a stellar year on 29th November. During just 12 months, the Bierkeller brand has grown in popularity and the venue, which also includes the ‘Shooters’ sports bar and ‘Around the World in 80 Beers’ bar, has become a huge draw. The Liverpool Bierkeller has had a remarkable first year in business, attracting bands, DJs and celebrities from all over the world. Bierkeller was also celebrating being recognised for its outstanding achievements at its first birthday party. The Bierkeller is the best performing bar in its sector in the UK and was recently recognised by The Juice FM Style Awards as ‘Best Bar’, a hugely acclaimed prize which is voted for by members of the public. With its traditional Bavarian theme, with steins of beer and authentic food, the Bierkeller is known for being fun and informal. Unsurprisingly, their first birthday party was all about having fun. Guests sipped on steins and a selection of wines and spirits and were entertained by the Beirkeller’s own Oompah Band, chart-topping Bloc Party, local favourites The Sterlings and Ukebox, Dominic Dunn, Phil Vid, Paul Dela Ross and Baz Todd. Martin Fessey, General Manager of Bierkeller, said: “The people of Liverpool, and the many tourists who visit the city, have really taken the whole Bierkeller concept to their hearts. They know when they come to visit us a great time is always guaranteed!” www.liverpool.thebierkeller.com
