Welcome

The ultimate high-tech cleansing system at The House Beauty Spa

T

he House Beauty Spa in Allerton has been selected to be a Clarisonic® stockist, along with Harrods, Selfridges and Space NK. The Allerton Spa is renowned for providing advanced treatments and skin care ranges. The originator of the Sonicare™ sonic toothbrush is now directing a new company and team of specialists, and this time has created a breakthrough in skin care technology: the Clarisonic Skin Cleansing System. Initially used pretreatment by top dermatologists and spas and now also available as a home-use product throughout the USA, this patented sonic technology is proven to be instrumental in improving facial cleansing; the first and most important step towards improved skin. The sonic difference Clarisonic® is a professional-calibre brush that uses a gentle sonic micro-massage action to cleanse deeply. It gently clears pores without harsh abrasion or chemicals, cleansing so effectively that skin care products absorb better. Clinical trials show that six times more makeup is removed than with manual cleansing, which can bring about the reduced appearance of pores, fine lines and wrinkles, and improved skin tone. A minute a day for cleaner, healthier skin Using any non-abrasive facial cleanser, Clarisonic® works to unclog pores for deeper cleansing, working with the skin s natural elasticity and without stripping it. It is safe for virtually all skin types. With its built-in one minute timer, Clarisonic® beeps to indicate when it is time to clean the next area of the face and is as easy to use as a powered toothbrush - so no additional time

10

is added to the beauty ritual. It is also waterproof so can safely be used in the bathroom and shower. “These days, people are using sunscreens daily, long-lasting makeup and self-tanners, so it’s imperative to properly cleanse the face if you want clear skin,” says a leading dermatologist Dr. Ranella Hirsch, “Dirt, oil and bacteria left on the skin can wreak havoc, and without clean pores, treatment products like acne fighters and anti-ageing moisturisers are less effective.” www.thehousebeautyspa.co.uk

Clarisonic can remove six times more make-up than manual cleansing alone.

STREET SMART This month, the Street Smart team hot-footed it to Topshop, one of our favourite high street haunts, to find out what Liverpool’s stylistas are wearing as we head into May. WORDS and PICTURES: Hannah ramsay

Sophie Harry, 19

It was love at first sight when the His & Hers team spotted Sophie’s chic Topshop jacket (which she snapped up for the bargain price of just £10 in the sales). She has teamed this style staple with a classic white T-shirt from Topshop and leggings from American Apparel.

18

Nicky Thompson, 28

Nicky was laden down with an array of new outfit options which she was taking to the fitting room when we spotted her. She smilingly confessed that her entire outfit, with its subtle animal print motif, had been sourced from Topshop. We like your style, Nicky!

Sherece, 24

Sherece is pretty in pastels in her new season Topshop ensemble. We particularly like her floral tunic, accessorised with a striking head band and watch from Juicy Couture.

Ursula Carey Jenkins, 22 Another Topshop devotee, Ursula caught our eye instantly with her crisp monochrome style. Her top, jeans and shoes were all snapped up in store, as was her coral lipstick, the one dash of colour she’s chosen to complement her pared down outfit.

Nicola George, 26

Nicola has teamed her on-trend tie-die top and understated black leggings (both from Topshop) with a vintage pair of shoes, which she spotted at a fashion wholesalers.

Abby, 18

Abby caught our eye with her colourful earrings, which are complemented by her Mac lipstick in the same shade. Abby wears top-to-toe Topshop, accessorised prettily with a ring from Pandora.

Nicola has layered her tie-dye top over a classic black cotton bra from Topshop, £18.

A compact multi-coloured clutch is the final element for day-to-night style, £25, Topshop.

S teal her style

Nicola’s swirl tie-dye top is the statement piece of her ensemble and has only just hit the rails in Topshop. Snap yours up before it goes. £22, Topshop.

This month we’ve recreated Nicola’s modern rock chick look. WORDS: Hester brodie

Take Nicola’s rock chick look from day to night with these black leather heels, £40 from Dorothy Perkins.

Nicola has accessorised her outfit with a delicate chain. We like this ‘Peace Sign’ multirow necklace from The Jewellery Room, £8.50. Black cotton leggings are a His & Hers wardrobe staple. Try this pair which is a classic with a twist from Topshop, £28.

Emma McHarrie’s Entertainment News I’m so excited to be writing my first column for the lovely His & Hers Magazine. Each month I’ll be keeping you updated on some of the best shows that are visiting our fine city and giving you the lowdown on the latest happenings at the Echo Arena.

S

o where to start? Well April saw me enjoy my guilty pleasure of pop band ‘Steps’ when they opened their tour to a sell-out crowd at the Echo Arena. They had everyone dancing in their seats whilst trying to remember the dance moves to ‘5, 6, 7, 8’, ‘Tragedy’ and more... I certainly wasn’t looking at my coolest, but it was lots of fun! Then we had ‘Dancing On Ice - The Live Tour’ kicking May off in style with three brilliant shows full of lycra, fake tan and glitter. The Liverpool gals – Jennifer Ellison, Jorgie Porter and Heidi Range – were really excited if a little nervous to be performing to their home crowd but did a great job, receiving the biggest cheers of the night. Gazing ahead to this year’s highlights, ‘Guns N’ Roses’ roll into town on 20th May. This will be the band’s first time performing in Liverpool and I’m looking forward to releasing my inner rock chick and brushing up on some air guitar at that one! August sees the return of ‘Disney Live! Mickey’s Magic Show,’ which will be perfect for the kids, whilst home-grown comedian John Bishop will be here in October for six huge laugh-out-loud nights - I can’t wait! We’ve had some fantastic new on-sales the past few weeks, one of the most popular being the rather handsome Olly Murs who returns here in March 2013 – that seems such a long way away but will no doubt be here before we know it! Look out for some great shows over the summer which I’ll preview for you next month – I can already see my diary getting packed out…but that’s just the way I like it!

Beauty Buzz Surgery is no longer necessary as Tracey Bell can now create a contoured body quickly, comfortably and conveniently with the CoolSculpting™ technique.

Z

ELTIQ’s CoolSculpting™is the newest and coolest way to battle the bulge at Tracey Bell. The non-invasive and proven method for the reduction of fat targets bulges that just will not budge. The procedure is constantly challenging its laser lipo opponents by freezing the flab without damaging the skin. The innovative machine at The Tracey Bell Clinic uses a cooling method called ‘Cryolipolysis’ to target, freeze and break down fat cells. Fat cells in the body react at different temperature levels. Several days after the procedure, the cooled fat cells begin apoptosis, shrink and are naturally metabolised by your body, creating a more svelte, sleeker and slender result. Surgery is no longer necessary as Tracey Bell can now create a contoured body quickly, comfortably and conveniently with the CoolSculpting™ technique. The procedure is even more impressive when one considers its credentials: there is no recovery time and the

22

procedure can be complete within a lunch hour- it’s more colloquially known as: ‘Lunchtime Lipo’. The results are effective and noticeable within the first 6 weeks; Tracey Bell’s clients are raving about the marvellous machine as they are seeing a noticeable 20-40% fat reduction in as little as three weeks. Tracey Bell offers CoolSculpting™ starting from £800 a session. At less than two thirds the price of liposuction, ZELTIQ’s CoolSculpting™ at Tracey Bell will ensure clients are cool, sculpted and fat free. The exclusive ‘Ice & Fire’ SlimScription package at Tracey Bell also combines the procedure with a Radio Frequency course as part of a two pronged flab attack, causing the skin to tighten as the fat is naturally broken down over a six week period. To freeze away the fat, book in now for a ZELTIQ’s CoolSculpting™ experience at The Tracey Bell Clinic on 0151 707 0340. www.traceybell.co.uk

Winningwomen His & Hers speaks to the businesswoman breaking new ground in a traditionally male dominated industry. with thanks to: Amy Goodwin

Julie Goodwin

Julie Goodwin is the owner of Superstar Social, a social media marketing and consulting business based in Liverpool. With a strong sales and marketing background, Julie spent a number of years in Spain as a sales manager for an international property company, but after the property market took a turn for the worse she returned to the UK and found another sales position in Southport. After nearly three years in that role, Julie decided to take voluntary redundancy in 2011 with the goal of starting her own business. After researching social media and becoming intrigued by the growth of this sector, Julie decided to find out what all the fuss was about. “I looked at the market and noticed there were few other business that solely provided social media support for businesses, and thought ‘I can do that’, said Julie, adding: “ Furthermore, that’s a job I would love doing, so Superstar Social was born.” Superstar Social has grown rapidly in its first year, evolving from a kitchen counter start-up into a flourishing business with an impressive client list and city centre offices.

Superstar Social has grown rapidly in its first year, evolving from a kitchen counter start-up into a flourishing business with an impressive client list and city centre offices.

“The speed at which Superstar Social has grown has amazed me, but it’s not been easy - as sole owner I do everything and sometimes work until the early hours, but I love it and wouldn’t have it any other way”, said Julie, adding: “The people I’ve met since starting my own business have been inspirational and and I’m especially impressed by the female entrepreneurs I have met - they are all fantastic women.” Julie is looking forward to the year ahead, when she plans to take Superstar Social to the next level by taking on more staff and developing an online social media managers’ training programme for other potential social media superstars. “If I can do it, anyone can”, she declared.

His&hers beauty

losing it Liz Taylor shares the latest extract from her diary as she embarks upon her journey of reinvention.

I

’m writing from a Bloomsbury hotel, looking onto a London Skyline and preparing for one of the most important meetings I’ll ever attend. It’s a big deal and for the first time in a long time I feel like a small fish in an ever-increasing bowl, peddling our very British brand to an even more British store who’ve asked for our time and SkinScription products (with a very English please) from 10am. Rather than studying the spreadsheet before me, or working out how to use the trouser press to un-crease an inexplicably creased jacket, my thoughts have turned to home and what that means. Tracey and I were discussing different events in our lives earlier at dinner. Laughing the way only women do over latte and regret; confessions and anecdotes based upon an implicit understanding that what is shared over the menu, stays off it as soon as the Boardroom doors open. And in that shorthand our talk turned to homes we have lived in, cities we have loved and how our stories played underneath different roofs, in different cities, using different keys in slammed front doors. By definition the Clinic is a gateway for reinvention and home for change but we do not. We’re the honest

24

friend you’ve always wanted and the confident woman you’ve always wanted to be: offering a safe venue to put down your bags and raise your expectations. There are no surprises - just home comforts and truths. Here in the Capital listening to sirens and the footsteps of strangers calling this home for tonight, two things remain apparent: LiverCool and my slightly-bigger-fish status have never felt so appealing and home is where the smile is – whether a semi-detached or a clinic where dreams come true. As any friend of Dorothy will tell you – there’s no place quite like it.

Chaophraya and Palm Sugar send their lucky customers to Thailand Visitors to Liverpool ONE’s Chaophraya Thai Restaurant and Palm Sugar Lounge have been given the chance to win the trip of a lifetime to Thailand. And for those not fortunate enough to win this dream break (but fortunate enough to have rather a lot of cash to spare!) they’re selling a £10,000 ‘Bangkok Cocktail’, which is served up with an ultra-luxe Thai holiday.

A

t the time of going to print, two lucky Chaophraya guests were about to be told that they were going on the trip of a lifetime to Thailand. The winners will receive two return flights to Thailand’s capital city, Bangkok, as well as £500 to spend once they arrive. Boasting attractions such as the Grand Palace and Wat Arun Buddhist temple, Bangkok is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Named after the main river in Thailand, Chaophraya (pronounced ‘Chow-pie-ya’) places an emphasis on authenticity and fresh ingredients and Chaophraya’s menu has been specially designed to highlight the delicate flavours of Thai cuisine. Dishes include classics such as Thai Green Curry as well as signature dishes such as ‘Weeping Tiger’ (marinated steak served sizzling hot) and Pan Fried Sea Bass with Chilli. And for those not lucky enough to win the trip of a lifetime, there’s always the chance to order a ‘Bangkok Cocktail’, which is served in a martini glass and is made with Tanqueray No. 10, Chambord, lemon juice, sugar syrup and Armand de Brignac ‘Ace of Spades’. A spokesperson for Palm Sugar confessed that the price tag of this £10,000 cocktail was not likely to appeal to most of their customers, who are more used to Palm Sugar’s cocktail prices ranging from a considerably more purse-friendly £7.50-£8 (or just £3.50 for non-alcoholic ‘mocktails’). However, they say they wanted their biggest spenders to leave the bar with much more to show for their night than a hangover. His & Hers can certainly see the appeal of being served up a luxury seven-day holiday, including flights, with your cocktail, but we don’t mind admitting that we’ll be sticking with Palm Sugar’s regular cocktail menu, and leaving one of the city’s most extravagant cocktails to those with rather more expensive tastes!

STREET SMART

With football matches, horse races and rollercoaster weather this month, I was pleasantly surprised to find these trendy guys still stalking the city’s key shopping streets, flying Liverpool’s fashion flag. WORDS & pictures: Luke Trevaskis

Sean, 18

Psychology Student As a psychologist with a bashful demeanor, it was hard to tell whether Sean was shy or secretly psychoanalyzing and pairing my choice of clothing with a personality type. Finding him in Aubin & Wills, wearing his summer Timberlands, it was not hard to guess where his shirt and jeans were from.

26

Drew, 20

Sports Student In a look that would befit most students and off-to-the-gym types, Drew wears a simple Zara tee with jeans from Resurrection. He finishes his ensemble with an Adidas bag (no doubt containing his sweats) and a cap from Size.

Harry, 24

Retail Manager Being in retail, it’s no surprise that Harry knows what to pair with what. His jacket is a oneoff from Farrah Vintage and it is the perfect piece to overlay his shirt, jeans and brown leathers (all from Topman). Harry finishes the look with a sleek River Island bag.

Chris, 22

Retail Assistant With shops a plenty, it isn’t hard to hunt out the men who take pride in their appearance in Liverpool. Chris loves working in Topman, so it’s no surprise that he takes full advantage of his staff discount. His jeans, top, belt and stylish neckerchief are all from Topman, with his preferred shoe brand being Vans.

Oliver, 18

Salesman As a salesman by trade, this young jack-the-lad certainly had the gift of the gab. His look is typically ‘Urban Classic’, with fitted jeans from Zara, a Fred Perry shirt and an olive vintage jacket. His pumps are from Choice and perfect for afternoon windowshopping.

Stephen, 22

Physiotherapy Student With the camera loving him, should Stephen be subject to a life of spine manipulations and deep tissue massage?! It’s not often that students take such care in their appearance but with Clarks shoes and a shirt-and-pant combo from Aubin & Wills, it is clear where Stephen will be spending his NHS wages.

With the fame of the Anderson belt, there are few men who haven’t acquired a trusty and durable look-a-like for those everyday occasions. This leather weave belt will work with most looks and keep you modest for summer. £12, Topman.

S teal his style

There is nothing quite as versatile as sand chinos. Whether you want to play things down or inject some colour into your outfit, these Diesel chi-tight slim-fits provide a great foundation. £110, John Lewis.

Stephen has opted for a conservative ‘Covent Garden’ look with this collection – a great way to add classic style to the summer days ahead. WORDS: Luke Trevaskis

There isn’t much that can beat a good pair of Chukka boots such as these brown suede desert boots from Ted Baker’s Tullik range, £95.

I believe consistency is the key to any look. If you are going with a neutral colour scheme opt for matching accessories such as this tan Aztecembossed wallet. £10, Topman.

With the weather getting warmer it is time to pull out your linens and tighten that torso. Shirts such as this Ecru Geo Pattern from Topman offer a great solution for summer at only £32.

Hotel Indigo impresses on many different levels

H

His & Hers pays a visit to a boutique-style hotel which offers more than meets the eye.

otel Indigo is a boutique hotel where you will find an exciting, vibrant 4 star environment, with Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse Bar & Grill as a focal point: it’s a winning combination that offers truly enjoyable and unforgettable experiences. As the first British chef to be awarded 3 Michelin stars and the youngest chef in the world to receive them, Marco Pierre White promises a great dining experience. The finest, locally-sourced produce and dedicated talented kitchen team are the key components to creating mouth-watering cuisine. The hotel is located in the city’s commercial district: ideally placed, close to Cavern Walks, Liverpool ONE and the Metquarter for a brilliant shopping experience and the Echo Arena for great entertainment. There’s a coordinated approach to overall design and efficiency and friendliness of the staff that make for a fun relaxed stay, as confirmed by His & Hers’ colleagues who were lucky enough to spend a thoroughly enjoyable extended weekend as guests. What’s not to love with great decor, oversized beds, spa-inspired bathrooms, complimentary

wireless internet access and a Fitness Studio! There are some great offers at the restaurant. Try two courses for £10 from the Table D’Hote lunch menu from Monday to Thursday or a two course dinner for £20 from Monday to Thursday, which is a chance to experience fine cuisine at affordable prices, in style in the heart of the city. His & Hers would like to give you a preview of the menu: the yellow courgette and goat’s cheese salad is a mouth watering starter; succulent, tender rump steak with real chips is a winning main course dish, as is the fish cake, with green beans in a sweet and sour sauce. My own particular favourite dessert is white chocolate Brûlée, but raspberry Bavarois is a close second. The real chips are made from beef dripping, which is what gives them that wonderful flavour. The cocktails (let’s not forget the cocktails!) wines and champagne are also worth a mention, because there’s an offer of 3 drinks for the price of 2 Monday to Thursday between 5pm and 7pm. There’s a great buzz about this venue and it’s a great launch pad from which to explore a fascinating part of the city. www.hotelindigoliverpool.co.uk

His & Hers Revisits

Merchants Bar & Restaurant

This month, we reacquaint ourselves with one of Liverpool’s best-loved bars and restaurants.

L

ocated at 62 Castle St, Merchants Bar & Restaurant is known for its striking interior (being housed within a stunning Grade I listed building helps!) and for the quality of their food and drink offering. They’ve built up a loyal following amongst those who appreciate Merchants’ understated sophistication, and word-of-mouth reviews of the bar and restaurants are universally positive. The only criticism His & Hers has ever overheard is some very discreet muttering about the price of their drinks. The owners have clearly taken this feedback on board, devising a new Express Menu featuring mouth-watering main courses starting from just £4.95. They’ve also been serving up modestly priced but immaculately mixed cocktails, which start from a surprisingly purse friendly £3.50. His & Hers opted for classic comfort food in the form

of beer-battered fish and chips served with lemon and tartar sauce. The portion was generous, but both the chips and batter were surprisingly light – a fact that we used as the justification for demolishing our main with unseemly haste before tucking into the panocotta of vanilla, served with poached seasonal fruits, orange and mint. This looked lovely, but tasted better. Replete, we headed to the bar, where we ended the night with a cocktail (or several). The mixologist was one of the best we’ve been lucky enough to place a drinks order with, and we enjoyed the quiet hum of conversation at the bar, which made a refreshing change from the fight to the bar at some rival city centre establishments. The His & Hers verdict: Before you join the herd in search of the next best thing, we’d recommend paying a return visit to one of Liverpool’s old favourites. It won’t disappoint. www.62castlest.com

Chris & Mark’s Skincare Secrets

Mark and Chris Johnson White of Scousewives fame share their enviable knowledge of beauty and hair in their regular column. This month they focus on ‘the best of British’ and the ‘English rose’. words: jean hill

H & H: What does ‘English rose’ and ‘best of British’ mean to you? Mark: I can’t speak too highly of the Duchess of Cambridge (Kate Middleton). She buys British fashion, from the High Street, and her look is perfect ‘English rose’. Her makeup is flawless and she looks amazing. Nicola Roberts, beautiful Girls Aloud star, has designed a fabulous cosmetic range ‘Dainty Doll’ that includes a white foundation base that eliminates yellow tones that display as orange on a redhead’s delicate skin. H & H: What are the trends for ‘best of British’ summer hair and how important is it to match the type of cut to the texture of hair? Chris: We’re big fans of Beauty Works hair extensions, which we stock in the salon and I can’t emphasise enough that hair extensions need to be done by a professional to achieve the wow factor without risk of damage to hair. I like Phil Smith’s ‘Be Gorgeous’ hair range: glossing serums and frizz free polish that help achieve that English rose finish. (The Duchess of Cambridge has been sporting a sophisticated lifted up style, where the condition and polish are crucial). Fine hair needs a blunt cut to give it body whilst thick or curly hair needs to be cut to work with the curl or texture. Then, put on your Union Jack ‘wellies’ and step out in style H & H: Any more beauty tips? Chris & Mark: Eighty five percent of women wear the wrong colour foundation. We customise makeup for each client. Tracey Bell’s pure crushed mineral makeup gives skin luminosity and the retexturing face primer is a great base to build on.

CHRIS AND MARK CAN BE CONTACTED ON: 0151 7097604 HOLIDAY PLANNING STARTS AT THE SALON.
