EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH A FASHION ICON

EDITOR’S WELCOME

AUTUMN/WINTER FASHION ISSUE Welcome

to the autumn/winter fashion issue, featuring two big photo-shoots and a host of exclusive celebrity interviews. This month, the His & Hers team has been covering even more ground than usual in order to bring you the breaking fashion, celebrity and beauty news from Liverpool, Manchester, London and LA, where we pictured rising US fashion star Dean Ryan on Laguna Beach. While fashion writer Hannah Ramsay reported for us from London Fashion Week (from p36) and sought out the Capital’s best-dressed men and women, Style Editors Hester Brodie and Bryan Harrop were flying the flag for the magazine ‘up north’, where they organised this month’s big men’s and womenswear shoots from Manchester. Meanwhile, I was fortunate enough to secure face-to-face interviews with fashion icon, Twiggy, culinary hero, Marco Pierre White and TOWIE star, Samantha Faiers, all of whom are working on exciting new projects in the UK. As if that wasn’t enough excitement, we were proud to team up with our friends at John Lewis, who gave us a sneak preview of their record-breaking Alice Temperley range, Harvey Nichols, who spilled the beans on their new beauty bazaar, McArthur Glen, who persuaded Laura Bailey, their brand ambassador, to share her style advice and Topshop, who spilled their personal shopping secrets. We’ve also asked the experts to share their health, fitness, skincare and beauty tips for the new season, as well as featuring a few of our entertainment, fine dining and travel recommendations to help you enjoy the season in style. We’ll be back with even more news, reviews and exclusive celebrity interviews in the Christmas Holiday Edition.

HIS&HERS INTERVIEW

TWIGGY UNVEILS HER NEW FASHION COLLECTION FOR M&S

When Twiggy invited me for an exclusive preview of her new collection for M&S, I sensed that after the calm of our informal interview, we were just minutes away from a feeding frenzy, as shoppers fought to snap up a piece of fashion history. I wasn’t wrong. WORDS: EMMA HILL

S

peaking as her new womenswear collection for M&S went on sale at flagship stores throughout the UK, Twiggy told me how satisfying it was to count down the minutes until the collection she’s been working on for months began flying off the rails. Clearly Twiggy, who has been influencing the way women dress for decades, ever since she emerged onto the fashion scene in the ‘60s as one of the UK’s most iconic models, is relishing the opportunity to take creative control of her own fashion line, designing clothing that will appeal to women of all ages. Twiggy declared: “My range launched online in April, and we had such a wonderful reaction to it. A sequinned jacket from my collection sold out in just two days. We had to bring it back twice to try to keep up with demand.” Several other key pieces from the collection, including wardrobe staples, such as a chic leather biker jacket, also sold out in a fraction of the time Twiggy and M&S had anticipated. “You just don’t know until you launch if

people are going to buy your clothes, and if so what they’ll buy”, confessed Twiggy. After the resounding success of her online collection, M&S asked Twiggy to design her latest womenswear collection, which was about to launch into their stores when we met, and she acknowledged that this has been even more exciting than selling online, saying: “We use the best quality fabrics, so it’s great to know that people will be able to feel the quality of the wool and leather before buying.” To illustrate her point, Twiggy leads me to a clothes rail which has been set up for our interview to showcase a selection of her designs which are expected to become future best-sellers. As Twiggy talks me through the range, she pulls several pieces from the rails, which she suggests would suit my figure. After being given the opportunity to handle the fabrics, from soft buttery leathers and opulent wools and silks, and checking out the prices (which are all reassuringly modest) I can see why shoppers are voting with their feet and snapping up Twiggy’s designs in record time. Another secret to

11

HIS&HERS INTERVIEW

the success of the range is that it appeals to several different generations, something that was very important to Twiggy. “I really feel that fashion should be for everyone”, she said, adding: “I hate it when people say you’re over 40, so you must wear this or you can’t wear that. My daughter’s in her early 30s and she shops from this range, but at the other end of the spectrum, I recently received a message from a woman in her 80s who’d bought her first ever biker jacket from my M&S collection. I thought that was fantastic!” Twiggy concluded: “The most important thing to me was that I didn’t want the range to frighten anyone. No matter what age you are or what your budget is you’ll find something within my collection to suit you – my clothes really are for everyone.” Clearly M&S’s customers agree, as I discovered when I decided to pay a quick visit to my nearest store to shop the range. Eager fashionistas were grabbing up the pieces Twiggy had shown me, and despite my best efforts, a rival snapped up the last sequinned skirt in my size before could get a look in. Not since M&S introduced their £10 Dine In For Two offer have I seen such anxiety levels amongst M&S’s shoppers, all eager to snap up their purchase before someone else did. My advice? If you want to own one of Twiggy’s designs, do your research online first. Having missed out in store, I’ve begun perusing the M&S website with the kind of intensity generally reserved for those

12

attempting to purchase Glastonbury tickets in the tiny window of opportunity before they sell out. A little extreme, perhaps, but at least based on the phenomenal success of the range I know that I’m not alone! www.marksandspencer.com

OLGA, 41

Make-Up Artist Olga mixed high street and designer to create this chic look, wearing a gold Zara jumper over a brocade Ralph Lauren pencil skirt. She added a pop of colour with scarlet suede Christian Louboutin shoes and a fur trimmed bag by the same designer and accessorised with Oscar De La Renta earrings.

LISA, 23

Editor-in-Chief Just Another Fashion Magazine Lisa worked top-to-toe high street perfectly here, wearing a striking white Topshop coat with black skater skirt and boots, both also from Topshop. She added a splash of colour to her monochrome palette with a mint green top from H&M and carried an oversized leather bag.

DANI, 20

Student Dani hot-footed it to Topshop earlier this month, when their much anticipated collaboration with JW Anderson launched, snapping up her on-trend paisley skirt and classic black top. She finished the look with RayBans, a vintage jacket and a Moschino belt.

EMMA, 22

Freelance Writer Emma kept warm despite the London chill with her stylish layering of chunky Topshop jumper and sheer shirt from American Apparel. She teamed the colourful garments with simple skinny black pants and cute buckled ankle boots, both from Zara.

HIS&HERS DINES OUT

Table Talk with Marco Pierre White What’s the secret to being a good cook? Why are celebrity chefs ‘morally reprehensible’, and what can we learn about healthy eating from Bernard Matthews? Find out in our no-holds-barred interview with Marco Pierre White. WORDS: EMMA HILL

A

s I awaited my interview with Marco Pierre White, which was to take place within his gleaming MPW Steak House at Hotel Indigo, Liverpool, I caught sight of Marco, who cut an imposing figure, at the far side of his restaurant. As one of the UK’s highest profile chefs and restaurateurs, Marco had been spotted by my fellow diners almost instantly, and was soon swallowed up by a sea of foodies seeking autographs and photographs. When he finally emerged, Marco smiled apologetically and confessed: “I’m quite private, really, so you won’t often see me out in public, but when I come to my restaurant, of course I understand that people will want a photograph or an autograph.” He added: “Once you step onto that stage of TV, I think you have a responsibility to be nice to everybody because, to some extent, you become a role model”. Warming to his theme, Marco added: “You’ll never see me swear on TV like a lot of celebrity chefs, because I know my daughter will be watching me. Also, if my mother was still alive and saw me swearing on TV, she’d be appalled with me. It’s about trying to be an ambassador to your industry and not letting your family down.” So clearly Marco won’t be using the kind of colourful language we associate with Gordon Ramsay and a few others in his kitchens any time soon, but what else sets him apart from his contemporaries? Marco ponders the question for a moment, before leaning across the table and declaring: “When certain high-profile figures in my industry start jumping up and down about buying organic and criticising modern

farming methods, I think that’s morally wrong.” He added: “I was brought up really poor and it was a struggle to put food on the table sometimes. People criticise me for promoting brands like Bernard Matthews or Knorr, but I use Knorr stock cubes as a healthier alternative to salt - it’s an essential for domestic kitchens. And without brands like Bernard Matthews, a lot of families like the one I grew up in wouldn’t be able to have turkey on their table.” Marco added: “What’s important to me is the provenance of an animal. I don’t want people to feel guilty because they can’t afford to feed their families exclusively on organic or free-range foods. Most people can’t, and most of the celebrity chefs who campaign on these issues couldn’t vouch for the provenance of every ingredient they use in their kitchens. It’s pure snobbery!” After outlining his mission to stop people feeling guilty or nervous in the kitchen, Marco asked, with a twinkle in his eye, whether I rated myself as a good cook. Reluctantly, I confessed to one of my culinary heroes that I’m no domestic goddess. Unphased, Marco responded: “Would you like me to tell you the ultimate secret to being a great cook?” I, of course, nodded hopefully and the chef wrapped up our interview with the words: “Lose any fear of the kitchen – just relax, have fun and don’t be scared of getting it wrong. Just do that and you’ll be a great cook.” And with that, he disappeared, smiling, back into a sea of happy diners. HIS&HERS INTERVIEW

When His & Hers Met SAMANTHA FAIERS

When the Only Way is Essex star Samantha Faiers arrived at the Metquarter, Liverpool, for our interview, almost 2,000 fans desperate to catch a glimpse of the reality TV star swiftly followed.

I

n a rare quiet moment away from her fans in the run-up to the opening of Minnies Boutique, Sam Faiers’s pop-up store at the Metquarter, the star ushered His & Hers into a quiet back room, where she showed us a selection of the dresses she’ll be stocking. The smiling TV personality confessed: “It’s not usually like this. In Essex, I can still go out and barely get recognised when I’m not dressed up.” However, she added that when she’s accompanied by her boyfriend, Joey Essex, (who arrived after our interview to support Samantha at the official launch of her pop-up store), the amount of public attention intensifies. Sam told His & Hers that she was very excited to be bringing a dash of Essex style to Liverpool, adding: “Liverpool style is quite similar to Essex style – it’s all about getting dressed up and getting your make-up done.” She added that she loved shopping and socialising in Liverpool, saying: “The Metquarter in Liverpool was an obvious choice as a site for my pop-up store,

24

because so many of my favourite brands, like M.A.C, Jo Malone and Urban Calm are here – it’s perfect for pampering.” Sam said she expected her boutique’s glamorous womenswear to appeal to a nationwide audience and was keen to roll the brand out with more popups and permanent stores. After showcasing a mini edit of the Minnies Boutique range to the His & Hers team, Samantha left to pose for the waiting photographers. Just hours later, news reports showed a crowd of thousands building up outside the Metquarter to see Sam and pay a visit to her store – not a bad result for her first day of business in Liverpool! www.minniesboutique.co.uk, www.metquarter.com

HIS&HERS FASHION

His & Hers Previews Somerset by Alice Temperley Last month, the new Somerset range by Alice Temperley made fashion history, becoming the fastest selling brand in the history of John Lewis.

I

n September, His & Hers was invited for an exclusive sneak preview of the new Somerset by Alice Temperley range, which we viewed instore just minutes before the retailer’s doors were opened to a host of eager fashionistas who’d been queuing outside to secure key pieces from the collection. As one shopper told us how she’d booked the morning off work to make sure she didn’t miss out, while we pondered our own wish-list from the collection, we sensed that the first Somerset drop was not going to stay on the rails for very long! Exceeding our expectations, the collection took eleven times the sales usually seen for a brand launch in just one day and hit its weekly sales targets by mid afternoon. John Lewis’s flagship shop on London’s Oxford Street opened early to welcome hundreds of fashionistas queuing in anticipation of owning an

Alice Temperley piece. These early bird shoppers took a fifth of the brand’s first day sales in just half an hour. A second drop of Somerset by Alice Temperley, comprising jacquard knits, leather trousers and pieces for the forthcoming party season, such as embellished tops and beaded full length evening gowns, was about to go into John Lewis stores nationwide and online at the time of going to print. Jo Hooper, Head of Buying, Womenswear, commented: “Alice and I are thrilled by customers’ enthusiasm for the Somerset by Alice Temperley brand. These levels of sales for a brand launch are totally unprecedented at John Lewis.” Price points range from £29 for a scarf, £99 for a day dress and £999 for a luxurious thick shearling coat. The collection is available in all 29 John Lewis department stores and online at: www.johnlewis.com/somerset

HIS&HERS HEALTH

INVESTING IN YOUR WELLBEING His & Hers’ resident fitness experts Anthony Brett and Lucie Riches reveal why women should lift weights.

M

uscle mass performs many roles within your body. Whilst best known for its ability to cause movement in your joints, women should also be aware of its role as the furnace that drives your metabolism. The more muscle you have, and the more tone that muscle has, the more calories you will burn at rest and whilst exercising. When your main goal is to lose fat and become leaner, the importance of muscle cannot be underestimated. So at this point, women may be worried that if they get their training wrong, they will bulk up after all. Not quite, because you’re also lacking a crucial element to build muscle: testosterone. Testosterone is the hormone responsible for building muscle and is present in the female body, but typically at levels 10 times less than in men of comparable age. As we tell our female clients, it is very unlikely, even if they followed a rigorous muscle-building programme, that they would become bulky and muscle bound. They would build muscle, yes, but only to a point that their natural testosterone levels would allow. Lifting weights also causes more calcium to be deposited in your bones, improving your bone density and strength. This is vitally important as you get older to prevent the onset of debilitating osteoporosis. This is

particularly important for post-menopausal women because it is an important factor in bone density. Resistance training also strengthens the tendons that connect your muscles to your bones as well as the ligaments that connect bones to bones. We often talk to our female and older clients about resistance training and calcium intake as a way to help ‘injury proof’ themselves against knocks, bangs and falls. Stable, strong joints are less prone to injury. EMAIL: INFO@PELLARIS.COM, WWW.PELLARIS.COM, T WITTER: PELLARIS_GB

adds enough colour to be suitable during the day, but it allows time to add 2-3 coats to take you into the night. If you forget your falsies this is the perfect alternative.

Simplicity is key for make-up bags and multipurpose products are great for saving space. Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation can be used in many ways, as a foundation, blemish/undereye concealer or sheer skin tint. It’s also longwearing - a base which covers you from desk to dance floor! Another great secret is our Cream Pigment which is basically a wonderful pot of pure colour. Try Cream Pigment in ‘Emerge’ for a fresh blusher and to add a fresh summery pop of peach over eyelids. You can even dab it over lips. One product for every feature! Never be without Illamasqua ‘Masquara’, a buildable long-lasting mascara. One coat

When the sun is out, we all tend to develop a shine during the day. No one should be without their blotting powder. Illamasqua Pressed Powder 010 is totally colourless and the finest milled powder on the market. Both essential qualities to a shine-free complexion that lasts and doesn’t look cakey. Even products intended for one use can function in other areas. We love mixing it up. Try using your favourite lipstick as a sheer wash of blusher colour.

Keep all of your products clean and in drawer or container specially allocated only for your make-up. Clear plastic boxes make your life easier. Get rid of anything you haven’t used for months. Forget the “I will wear it one day” myth. Keep make-up away from sun, heating or bathrooms that get too steamy. Replace mascaras every three months.

Use only good quality sharpeners. Cheap ones can sometimes destroy your pencils. Clean your brushes using M·A·C brush cleanser (or simply wash them) every time you use a different colour, or at least once a week.

Balenciaga’s comic-print sweatshirts are a great purchase for autumn. Keep your eyes out for the vintage equivalent - I stumbled on a basket full of 70s classics sweatshirts on Portobello Road yesterday. Mixing print and brocade is a favourite look of mine. I often pair my favourite old Miu Miu print skirts with a bit of Stella McCartney brocade and a pie-crust blouse. My classic Burberry trench coat, which I bought years ago in New York, is one of my first ‘grown-up’ purchases and is a staple for autumn/winter rainy days. I like to wear it combined with a scarf in my hair as I walk in the park, channelling Ali McGraw or Lauren Hutton. I love to wear a hat in winter, and my old battered black Phillip Treacy trilby is a trusty favourite. This season, I plan to treat myself to a wide-rimmed, floppy hat, which is an effortlessly glamorous accessory and goes with everything. I like to mix a bit of sportswear into my look, such as a sweatshirt with a pair of hi-top trainers. It gives any outfit a contemporary laid back look. Now, thanks to Stella McCartney, old favourites such as blue mascara and dazzle dust are making a comeback. These were probably the first items of make-up I ever bought back in the day, and I’m (almost) ready to go there again. Definitely a big look for autumn. I’ve always been a bit afraid of purple, but thanks to Christopher Kane’s autumn/winter show, and Chanel’s darkest indigo nail varnish, I’ll definitely be embracing the dark side this autumn. Cropped boyish trousers with a vintage print blouse are a winning combo, teamed with a brogue or lace-up boots. Celine, Margaret Howell and Stella McCartney are my favourite designers for trousers. www.mcarthurglen.com

TOPSHOP’S PERSONAL ERSONAL SHOPPING SERVICE

Feeling a little bit behind the times? Like you’re constantly putting on the same outfits? Then your wardrobe is probably in need of an update, courtesy of Topshop’s personal shopping service.

T

WORDS: HESTER BRODIE

his month, His & Hers met with Topshop’s famous personal shopping advisors in search of effortless autumn / winter fashion updates. After listening to their trends predictions and targeted fashion advice, we’ve pulled together an outfit from Topshop which we feel ticks all the boxes for winter dressing... A great tip for autumn / winter 2012 is layering a jumper over a cute dress to give it a more relaxed feel. Here at His & Hers, we’re loving tea dresses with cute collars, so invest in a dress with a pretty print and team it with a simple jumper. On our Personal Shopping Day, this fab olive dress was a personal favourite. It’s perfectly girly yet it still exudes that Topshop quirky style, which , as every fashionista knows, is key to creating a trendworthy outfit! So keeping to autumnal

tones, we’ve teamed this gorgeous dress with a maroon coloured jumper and as it’s getting colder, we would definitely opt for black opaques, too. We’d suggest toughening the look up with these very reasonably priced leather ankle boots and a classic leather biker jacket. To complete the outfit, we’ve added a statement necklace; these are everywhere at the moment and Topshop have definitely hit the nail on the head think Mawi but at Topshop prices… what’s not to love? So what are you waiting for - book your personal shopping appointment now at Topshop. We checked out Topshop’s personal shopping service at their Liverpool ONE branch, and are pleased to report that this service is also available at the brand’s other flagship stores nationwide. www.topshop.com

HIS&HERS TRAVEL

HIS & HERS’ LONDON STAY-CATION Following a summer of patriotism, with both the Olympics and Paralympics inspiring a generation, I decided that a little stay-cation was called for, and a trip to our capital city was on the cards.

I

WORDS: JAN MYERS

lived in London for seven years in my early twenties, and as anyone who lives in the city will tell you, it’s not often you get to do the tourist route! So a whistle stop tour of Buckingham Palace for the Changing of the Guard, Trafalgar Square to chase pigeons, the Half Price Ticket Booth in Leicester Square, and tickets to ‘Shrek’ (nothing too high-brow for me) was on the cards when I returned to the city with my family. We checked into the Malmaison hotel in Hoxton, set in a funky end of London, in a building in the charmingly cobbled Charterhouse Square, with its gated gardens, which are just idyllic. This leafy square is situated so close to Old Street that it is ideal for anyone wanting to sample the capital without the hustle and bustle of the West End. Malmaison is famed for taking a building and using its unique architecture to create beautiful spaces, and Hoxton is no exception. We paused to take in the impressive interiors while staff welcomed us into the reception and bar area, with cosy booths for secret liaisons and the chic Verve Clique bar. Our room was large, light and spacious with hints of the hotel’s personality shining through in the bathroom, where we spotted a personal welcome from the hotel manager and the toiletries which challenge you to ‘take me home, I dare you’. This is a very modern hotel, in a classic building and it feels like a comforting haven from the craziness of London’s West End, despite being a stone’s throw from legendary club, Fabric. Just as we were changing for dinner, a knock

at the door revealed a smart waiter with a tray containing two nicely chilled glasses of Champagne – just what we needed at the end of a long day. Dinner was served in the basement restaurant, where we dined early due to the impending call of ‘Shrek’, and what a delight it was, I opted for ceviche of yellow fin tuna, lime, mango and chilli to start, followed the Mal’s famous salmon and cod fish cake, served with spinach & herb sauce; while my dinner guest had hot chicken skewers, chilli jam, soy & ginger dipping sauces and The Mal burger with Gruyère cheese, bacon & fries, all topped off with a bottle of Prosecco Jeio, Bisol, which was perfectly crisp and fresh, before dashing to the theatre. The staff were incredible; they ordered us a cab and packed us off with hand-tied packs of madeleines to enjoy during the show, which, by the way, was simply awesome, and a must for children of all ages! His & Hers stayed at the Hoxton Malmaison & travelled via the West Coast line with Virgin Trains. The Virgin rail service from Liverpool to London takes approximately two hours, making it one of the fastest and most comfortable means of travelling between the two cities. We upgraded to first class (upgrades are available from just £10) to take advantage of free WIFI access and a better standard of complimentary refreshments than we’re used to on short-haul flights throughout our journey. Prices for first class rail travel from Liverpool to London start from just £36.50. www.virgintrains.co.uk www.malmaison.com

LONDON FASHION WEEK SS/13 TRENDS REPORT

‘Tis the season to embrace colour. I know summer always involves rainbow shades, but for spring summer 2013, it feels different. It’s not a rave, nor a carnival; it’s more like a few E-number-laden sweets thrown in with some dolly mixture. WORDS: HANNAH RAMSAY

A

t London Fashion Week, vivid hues were paired with more muted tones; prints were clashed but brought down to earth with black or white; textures were so exciting, you wouldn’t care if it was fuchsia or aqua or both together. Amongst hoards of floral prints, both painterly and digital, our old friend tribal popped up at a multitude of shows, having taken on a clean modernity when paired with more tailored looks. In Matthew Williamson’s case, his signature prints were paired with classic white shirts and dip dyed blazers, while at Preen, seventies patchwork inspired their prints, worn with contrasting collars

and sleeves. Michael Van der Ham too reworked classic shapes into asymmetric, multi-printed masterpieces, but this isn’t print clashing as we’ve done it before - we’re not talking separates. If different coloured prints are already sewn together in one dress, that’s not so scary, right? We’re seeing texture; embellishment, beading, embroidery and increasingly, designers using plastics alongside their favoured cottons and silks. I loved Holly Fulton’s transparent pink vinyl prom dress, complete with rich blue flower details. Sticking around are last season’s colourful tweeds but they’re lighter, less constricting; such as young designer, Hellen Van Rees’, recycled fibres bonded together to create seamless paper thin pieces in bright lemon. Finally, we have metallics, as seen in Christopher Bailey’s most fashion forward Burberry Prorsum collection ever, which probably represents every SS/13 trend. The classic trenches, given a pop of colour, met with ladylike pencil skirts and light shirts and there were even a few peplums - a trend that we thought, or prayed, wasn’t going to linger, but it seems it is, as a micro version of its former self. So we’re yet to see what Milan and Paris can offer us, but for now I think it’s safe to say that come SS/13 we’ll be exciting, modern ladies… having a riot in a sweet shop.

HIS&HERS INTERVIEW

SOUND THE

OF

FASHION “I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.”

F

WORDS: DAVID MATTAR, PICTURES: XXX

rom the painted lips of the not quite human rock’n’roll lord, David Bowie. Something tells me that the statement above rings true for another soul, just as gritty, just as colourful, Dean Ryan. His Fashion Rock Show merges fashion and music, an endeavour that we really couldn’t miss out on. Dean took time from his travels to speak with us, and offered a glimpse into the spectrum of passion and art that his life has become. Q. At His & Hers we take advantage of every road, street or alleyway and pull the inner runway model out, and strut. I prowl through the city listening to David Bowie’s ‘Fashion’, when feeling particularly kick-ass. What would be your ‘strut-song’? A: My Strut Song is ‘Big Time’ by Peter Gabriel. It’s pretentious and very ‘80s. The bass line is killer. It makes me want to put on a blazer with big shoulder pads and roll up my sleeves and chase a girl through Tahiti all while filming a music video. Q. Music and fashion complement each other beautifully; most noticeably with

artists like Bjork or Kate Bush. I find that my fashion sense depends on what I’m listening to at the time. What are you listening to right now, and how would you describe your style? A: I am currently listening to Elvis Presley’s Guitar Man from his 1968 Comeback special. It gives me inspiration to create clothing from that old Vegas era for my Dean Ryan Collection. I teamed up with American artist, Abby Martin, to give the clothing a modern feel. I like the style Elvis and Sinatra had towards the end of the ‘60s and beginning of the ‘70s. Throw ‘Vintage Vegas’ and some ‘California Beach Culture’ in the mix and then you get my style. Q. UK and US styles are not as striking in their differences as some would assume, but Liverpool is notorious for its daring, edge and ability to push the boundaries of fashion, in ways that not all would agree with, or like, on either side of the pond. How do you, as an American, perceive Scouse-style? A: Having lived in Liverpool earlier in the year I truly find Scouse-style to be the tip of the sphere for everything fashion. What I

47

love about it is that people’s identities aren’t hidden through boring department store outfits. There is a young indie feel full of individuality on display. The colours in the clothes I think are a reflection of the city and its environment. What’s cool is that the Brits include the fashions of an era gone by and make it into their own new generation. Q. America is undoubtedly in a state of unrest as Obama and Romney battle in their race for the White House. Michelle Obama says this: “Paintings and poetry, music and fashion, design and dialogue, they all define who we are as a people and provide an account of our history for the next generation.” How would you like the Fashion Rock Show to be remembered by the next generation and who has your vote in the Presidential debate? A: America is a divided country at the moment. It hasn’t been like this since the ‘60s. We have always been presented with a false choice for President for quite some time. The Two Party Dictatorship, known as Republicans & Democrats, are like Coke & Pepsi. One is lightly sweeter than the other, yet both are bad for you. The electoral process in America is a joke, nothing ever really changes. We still have wars, huge

debt and the erosion of our civil liberties. With that said I am voting 3rd Party for the Libertarian Candidate Gary Johnson. I applaud 3rd Party Movements in the US and the UK. I want to be on the right side of history. The Fashion Rock Show has started what I like to call the Fashion Rock Revolution. A platform to free people’s minds and shatter their paradigms through art. My art just happens to be fashion, rock ‘n’ roll and beautiful women. I don’t like playing the rules of conventional fashion shows or music events: I mix it up and really add interaction with our performers and models. It blurs the line of fantasy and realism. I think the public wants to hear their fashion as well as see it, kind of like what Bowie was doing years back. The designers I work with know to be edgy, different and at times political. I hope the Fashion Rock Show will be remembered as an idea that never conformed or took a back seat to corporate competitors. We are the new counter culture for this generation. His & Hers will be joining forces with Fashion Rocks for a red-carpet Hollywood party this autumn. Look out for coverage of this event, featuring pictures of the label’s edgy rock & roll style in our New Year issue.

HIS&HERS DINES OUT

Inside The Award-Winning Warehouse His & Hers pays a visit to Southport’s multi award-winning restaurant.

A

fter hearing several rave word-ofmouth reviews of the Warehouse Kitchen & Bar, which friends assured us was one of the North West’s best eateries, we thought it was about time we investigated further. Upon entering the restaurant, we took a moment to admire the chic interior design, which is modern but not stark, and to enjoy the quiet hum of conversation from our fellow diners. Of course His & Hers wouldn’t name names, but we did spot several of the world’s most famous golfers dining together and a few other high-profile guests, all of whom seemed happily absorbed in the twin pleasures of good food enjoyed in great company. My dining companion and I started our evening with pre-dinner cocktails before making our way down to the main dining area. We ordered a small selection of starters and main courses to share and were soon engaged in demolishing them. The Warehouse’s

famous fish dishes (including tempura squid and roast king scallops) were particularly delicious. The restaurant is known for supporting local producers and serving up only the freshest of fish, and it shows. After polishing off our delicious dinner, we were informed that the Warehouse had just been awarded 2 AA Rosettes for Culinary Excellence for the second year running. Tibu Pinedo, the Warehouse Kitchen and Bar Manager said: “Our aim is to give our clients the ultimate dining experience, and our attention to detail makes us stand out from the crowd, but most of all we are all about creating the very best food – and we are proud that our efforts in culinary excellence have been noted.” His & Hers’ advice? The Warehouse really is a great restaurant, but don’t take our word for it, or even the AA’s. This chic eatery is well worth paying a visit to so you can find out first-hand what all the fuss is about. www.warehousekitchenandbar.com

HIS&HERS DINES OUT

Welcome to ‘Sweet Moments’, the new must-join club As the winter chill began to bite, His & Hers discovered the ultimate morale booster in the form of an indulgent six-course dessert tasting menu at the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse at Hotel Indigo.

F

ollowing demand from their sweettoothed customers, the MPW Steakhouse has launched their most indulgent menu to date, featuring six mouth-watering desserts created by Head Pastry Chef, Alyson Rooney. Alyson has worked in some of the UK’s most exclusive restaurants (from the Savoy to L’Horizon) during the course of her 20 year career, and as she discussed how she’d painstakingly chosen each of the desserts for the new tasting menu, her passion for what she does was evident. His & Hers was particularly impressed with the glazed lemon tart, with its refreshing yet subtle citrus flavour, deep fried brioche doughnuts which melted in the mouth and the best panna cotta we’ve ever had the pleasure of spearing with a dessert

fork. Alyson’s hazelnut and lime meringue, apple and rosemary sorbet and chocolate delice were also impeccable, though we’d advise opting for a very light main course if you plan on devouring them all! The six-course dessert tasting costs £18 and a dessert wine package featuring three very good quality wines, chosen by the talented Gary Scott can be added for £15 per person. This package can be booked for up to 20 people on the last Thursday of every month. And if that’s just not indulgent enough for you, you could always pair your dessert tasting with a Cocktail Master Class, hosted by Liverpool’s Bar Tender of the Year, Tom Myles. The master class is an hour long and includes the opportunity to drink your creations, accompanied by nibbles, for just £20. www.hotelindigoliverpool.co.uk/ marco-pierre-white
