Editor’s welcome

AUTUMN style issue Welcome

This summer, rather than booking a holiday, I’ve been doing my travelling while reporting on autumn’s biggest launches for this issue. First on the itinerary was a visit to Jo Malone’s London headquarters for one of the world’s most opulent fragrance launches, featured on p16 (a staggering 15,000 peonies and dozens of excitable international beauty editors were involved). Then I joined the UK’s key trends press for a sneak preview of Audi’s new A3 Saloon in its Hungarian homeplace, a trip which left me smitten with the vehicle and with beautiful Budapest (both of which are featured on p46). Returning to the Wirral, I was delighted to join world-renowned chef and restaurateur Marco Pierre White for a glass of wine to celebrate the re-launch of Marco’s New York Italian in Hoylake. Having made my week by declaring His & Hers “a cool sexy magazine”, Marco gave a relaxed yet revealing interview in the sunshine (see p32) before penning his first column for His & Hers, which is featured on p38. I’m incredibly proud to welcome one of my culinary heroes as a columnist and am looking forward to trying out Marco’s recipe for apple and ginger crumble, which sounds like the ultimate in comfort eating on those cool autumn evenings. I then joined Women’s Style Editor Hester Brodie in Chester for her stunning underwater skincare shoot (p14) featuring real goldfish (I hasten to add that no goldfish were hurt in the making of this feature, though His & Hers has gained some new pets!) Meanwhile, Men’s Style Editor Bryan Harrop was hard at work on our swimwear feature, which was shot on a glorious summer day in Wales (p20). Back in Liverpool, I was excited to meet with the Environ team at the Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar to discuss this issue’s reader offer, featured on p25. I’ve been using the products from the giveaway ever since and am already hooked. Please let me know how you get on with yours and look out for the new issue, featuring more exclusive offers, in October.

His&hers STYLE

Couture When

Met

Cologne

Jo Malone London’s Peony & Blush Launch This summer, I stepped into an enchanted indoor garden where the scent of more than 10,0000 peonies filled the air at one of the world’s most opulent fragrance launches.

E

ver since my childhood, when I was caught red handed decanting my mother’s heartbreakingly expensive fragrances into a bowl I’d filled with blooms plucked from her garden in an attempt to create a new signature scent for her, I’ve been fascinated by fragrances. While we change our outfits daily, we tend to return to the same scents again and again, so most of us have experienced that heart-stopping moment when just passing a stranger on the street wearing an old favourite can transport you back to long forgotten summers in an instant.

Given the power of a great perfume to transport you to a different time or place, and to add a subtle sensual signature to your days, I’ve always hoped to follow the story of a new perfume from the very beginning. Therefore, when Jo Malone London (a brand with which regular readers may have noticed I have a long standing obsession) issued an invitation to the global press launch of their new Peony & Blush fragrance, I RSVPd with unseemly haste. As a rule, when working on a magazine, you’ll find that most of the glamour is saved for the page, but Jo Malone London’s Peony & Blush Suede launch was a notable exception to this rule. The brand’s Georgian headquarters in the heart of London are inherently impressive, but on the day of the launch, the building had been artfully dressed with more than 10,000 real peonies and 5,000 silk ones by floral artist Rebecca Louise Law. Wherever I looked, blooms had been painstakingly placed alongside red apples (one of the tasting notes within the fragrance) and Peony & Blush Suede candles, creating graceful groupings which looked like they would

His&hers STYLE have been perfectly at home in a Dutch still life painting. There were audible intakes of breath from the assembled international fashion and beauty editors, who are generally a notoriously tough crowd to impress, having been there, done that and been gifted with the T-shirt. However, no one had seen anything quite like this before. After joining my fellow guests in a brief moment of childlike wonder, I was ushered into another immaculately dressed room where Master Perfumer Christine Nagel was giving interviews. Although I’d never met Christine before, I’ve followed her career and worn her fragrances for a long time. An empty bottle of Jo Malone London’s long-since sold out Redcurrant & Cream Cologne, which Christine created, still has pride of place on my bedside table, where just glancing at the bottle reminds me of a brief but magical stay in West Hollywood where I wore the fragrance daily. Christine’s subtly beguiling Earl Grey & Cucumber Cologne for Jo Malone London was another firm favourite, as was her fresh and feminine English Pear and Freesia Cologne, which somehow transports you to fresh autumn days with a single inhale. Therefore, I was slightly nervous about sitting opposite the woman whose fragrances have gently drifted through so many of my favourite days. Fortunately Christine (who probably meets journalists who are obsessed with her distinctive fragrances all the time) helped me to forget my nerves almost The full Peony & Blush Suede collection (pictured) is available nationwide from 1st September.

18

instantly as she began explaining how Peony & Blush Suede was created. “In England, we focus on the rose”, she said, “but the peony is something special. It’s so chic, sophisticated and feminine and when you smell a peony, you notice lots of different facets of the fragrance.” As peonies flower for just three weeks, Christine had to work hard during this brief period to capture their delicate fragrance. She added: “We wanted to introduce something sensual and a little bit sexy – that’s where the element of suede comes in, helping to create a scent that is soft, supple, sophisticated and textured like the little black dress.” As I inhaled the fragrance, Christine pointed out the tasting note of red apple, which, in a testament to her skill you can detect instantly and could never mistake for green apple. The sweeter less acidic scent of red apples adds a fresh but gentle dimension to the fragrance, which is enhanced with just a touch of fresh almond for a velvety finish. “We’ve worked hard on this very feminine fragrance, which was originally inspired by the photography of Cecil Beaton, for two years” said Christine, who seemed delighted with how the cologne had been received by my fellow editors at its launch. The Peony & Blush Suede collection will be available from Jo Malone London stores nationwide from September, with prices starting from £39 for a 30ml cologne. www.jomalone.co.uk

E

nviron is best known for applying cutting-edge technology and scientific principles to create skincare products that deliver a measurable improvement in skin tone, evenness and hydration for a more youthful appearance. Prominent Cape Town plastic surgeon Dr Des Fernandes was one of the first to use vitamin A in high enough doses to ensure a genuine, visible effect on the appearance of the skin, having become interested in the physiology of skin cancer and the skin following the untimely death of two patients due to melanoma. Through his research he discovered the essential role of vitamin A in skin health and he became determined to create a range of skincare products that would maintain

healthy skin, especially as the incidence of sunrelated skin disorders grows worldwide. Out of this, the Environ company and skincare range were born. Today, Environ is acclaimed by international beauty editors, skincare therapists and dermatologists alike and since arriving in Liverpool at the famous Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar, demand for Environ products and facials has spiralled, with the brand rapidly gaining a cult following in the city. Find out what all the fuss is about by collecting your free bag of Environ products from the Environ team on the second floor of the Beauty Bazaar.

HIS & HERS MAGAZIN

His&hers BEAUTY

Alex Karidis on ‘How Not to Grow Old’ As Channel 4’s ‘How Not to Grow Old’ starring Mr Alex Karidis aired, the world renowned cosmetic surgeon agreed to share his top five anti-ageing secrets with His & Hers.

1

I think you have to get the basics right. It’s not about burning the candle at both ends all your life, then turning to surgery to put things right. Sure, in your 20s and 30s you feel invincible, but prevention is better than a cure, and it’s never too early to start looking after yourself.

2

Excessive exposure to the sun and smoking are the two most important things to avoid. Exposure to sun is really dehydrating and very damaging to skin in the long term and we all know the ageing effect of smoking.

3

I think the most overrated piece of antiageing advice is to choose skincare based on the price tag. It’s not about how much products cost – it’s about finding skincare you like and will enjoy using regularly and that doesn’t have to mean splashing out.

4

If you haven’t tried a facial for years, don’t be too quick to dismiss them. Technology is improving all the time and at the Karidis Medispa we offer results-driven facials which boost collagen production and will make the skin appear more youthful. These days facials aren’t just about relaxation!

5

We’re all dealt a certain genetic hand and some people are more resistant to the ageing process than others. However, if you follow all of the above advice, you really can make a difference. www.karidis.co.uk/medispa H

Achieving your dream smile just got a lot faster at the Tracey Bell Clinic If you’ve been yearning for a Hollywood smile, but lack the time or budget, Tracey Bell can help with the latest high-tech orthodontic treatments.

A

survey conducted by the British Orthodontic Society (BOS) has found that 45% of the British public are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth, with just under half of those stating they would seek orthodontic treatment. Nearly one million people of all ages started having orthodontic treatment last year in the UK. Previously, the majority of people who received orthodontic treatment in the UK were fitted with fixed metal braces, the infamous ‘train tracks’. However British dentists are now taking the lead from their American counterparts and welcoming the new dawn of British dentistry. The Tracey Bell team has returned from a series of training sessions in the latest sensation that is sweeping the world of dentistry in America. Dubbed the biggest advance in orthodontics in over 100 years, Fastbraces is making its way into dental clinic across the UK. Fastbraces means saying goodbye to years of wearing fixed braces and the hefty price tag that goes with them. Fastbraces uses a new technology to straighten teeth in as little as three months. Fastbraces offers

clients options of clear, ceramic and metal. However many Britons have stressed their dislike for fixed braces altogether, so The Tracey Bell Clinic is offering a completely clear, removable brace – Invisalign. Invisalign is a retainer which is worn 22 hours a day and removed to eat meals. Invisalign has been sported by a number of celebrities, young and old, most famously Justin Bieber. For clients who like to stick with the treatments of their favourite, there is also C-fast, a brace worn by Holly Willoughby recently. C-fast is a clear fixed brace which is designed to treat the front six teeth. By offering a variety of treatments in orthodontics, there truly is a treatment for everyone, which means the British may soon be able to rival their cousins across the pond with stunning straight smiles. For more information on any of the treatments, call 0151 770 0340 or visit: www.traceybell.co.uk H

Marco Pierre White’s Having selected a quiet spot outside Marco’s New York Italian, his recently rebranded restaurant in leafy Hoylake, a genial Marco Pierre White poured perfectly chilled glasses of rosé wine, the ideal accompaniment to a laidback interview in the sunshine.

M

arco who has just completed the first of his new food and drink columns for His & Hers, is no stranger to the magazine, so we were able to dispense with the usual formalities and find out what was on the restaurateur’s mind. Following a year-long rebranding exercise, Marco was in Hoylake to mark the re-launch of Marco’s New York Italian (formerly Frankie’s Bar & Grill). As well as introducing a new menu,

32

the restaurant now has a greater sense of theatre and a charismatic new restaurant manager. Sipping his wine, Marco explained: “When you create somewhere like this where everyone from every sector of society can sit and create memories, that’s pretty special.” Despite having made history at 33 when he became the youngest chef to be awarded three Michelin stars, Marco, who had Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal working for him during this period, ultimately tired of the accolades and left the kitchen in 1999. He ruefully confessed: “Winning those Michelin stars was really exciting, but defending them is without question the most boring job on earth because by then people’s expectations of you are so enormous that you have to play that game and you’re no longer creative because everyone wants to order the dish that made you famous. “Besides, the future of eating out isn’t about Michelin stars, it’s about casual dining, full stop. Our parents very rarely went out to dinner, but now people want to go out two or three times a week, so they want to go somewhere affordable and relaxed. If I asked you to name your favourite restaurant right now, I bet it wouldn’t be somewhere with a Michelin star – it would be somewhere where you feel completely at ease.” Reflecting Marco’s vision of relaxed and affordable dining, Marco’s New York Italian is a friendly, unpretentious restaurant with an unfussy menu featuring family favourites such as fresh pasta, steak, burgers, handmade pizzas and even hotdogs. The pricing is also family friendly with plenty of mains hovering around the £10 mark. During His & Hers’ visit, we noticed that although the restaurant attracts visitors from throughout the North West, many diners were Hoylake residents who’d opted to make the most of the sunshine by strolling to the restaurant, rather than driving. Marco is clearly proud of the restaurant’s ties with the local community. He quietly confessed:

Relaxed Modern Dining “I’m not a wildly ambitious person – I crave the ordinary. Today I went for the walk on the beach in Hoylake and tonight I’ll be going to the Plasterers’ Arms (a 200-year-old pub tucked away on a Hoylake side street) for a pint.” During his time in the North West, Marco became heavily involved with Claire House Children’s Hospice, and is now a Patron of the charity. On the day of our interview, he’d invited staff and children from Claire House to join him for a three-course meal at his restaurant and clearly took great pride in welcoming his VIP guests, saying: “Seeing the families from Claire House here today was really beautiful.”

Marco will be returning to the North West on 25th September to welcome guests to a special lunch and dinner at the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse within Hotel Indigo, Liverpool, and told His & Hers: “I love Liverpool! My father used to work at the Adelphi Hotel, so there’s family history there, and every time I come up north I always pay a visit to Claire House.” We left the restaurateur planning his next visit to the region as eager diners gathered to sample simple, unpretentious dishes from one of the best in the business. www.marcoshoylake.co.uk www.mpwsteakhouseliverpool.co.uk

Emma McHarrie’s Entertainment News They say variety is the spice of life and there’s certainly been a lot of variety at Echo Arena over the past few months – we’ve had snooker, boxing, rock ‘n’ roll, pop and the magical ‘Disney Live! Mickey’s Rockin’ Road Show’ – there’s never a dull moment and that’s exactly how I like it.

I

went along to my first Liverpool Pride down at the Waterfront in August and really loved it – it was great to see everyone in the city having such fun! We took along some of the cast of ‘Rent – 20th Anniversary Concert’, who are performing at The Auditorium at Echo Arena in November. They got a fabulous reaction, especially when they performed show favourite, ‘Seasons of Love’. If you’ve not heard the track before, check it out on the Rent in Concert website – it’s amazing. The autumn programme for Echo Arena is already looking pretty busy, with Rod Stewart, Arctic Monkeys, Jesus Christ Superstar and Jessie J just some of the highlights. Also, we welcome Bruno Mars in November with 50 million singles sold worldwide, the 14-time Grammy Award nominee has already sold over 800,000 tickets worldwide for his ‘Moonshine Jungle World Tour’, so those lucky enough to get tickets for his Echo Arena show will be in for a treat! We also have a few shows on sale for 2014, including the hysterical comedian Lee Evans. Lee’s manic energy, uncanny observations, hilarious delivery and side-splitting material have made his live performances a must-see for comedy fans worldwide. From 2002 to 2011 alone he has

performed to over 1,605,000 people through his four live arena shows, so we are super excited to be welcoming him back to Liverpool. Comedy seems to be the new rock ‘n’ roll at the moment, with seven amazing comedians already booked to appear at Echo Arena or The Auditorium – Milton Jones, Micky Flanagan, For The Love Of Mrs Brown, Jack Whitehall, Russell Brand, Miranda Hart and of course Lee Evans – comedy-tastic! Top Tip: Jack Whitehall, 9th March.

Marco Pierre White’s Culinary Obsessions Introducing His & Hers’ new food and drink columnist, internationally renowned chef and restaurateur, Marco Pierre White.

M

arco Pierre White is one of the world’s most celebrated chefs, with restaurants across the North West, including Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill in Liverpool’s Hotel Indigo, and at DoubleTree by Hilton Chester, plus Marco’s New York Italian in Hoylake. Here he gives us his unique slant on all things food. With the arrival of September our thoughts inevitably turn to the onset of autumn. With food in mind, for me, the changing of the seasons means a natural transition from lighter creations to heartier fare. Autumn is an exciting time at my restaurants in Liverpool, Hoylake and Chester, not to mention in my kitchen at home, which seems to take on a life of its own during this time. Autumn is my most cherished time of the year, with my happiest childhood memories being from these twilight months, namely kicking leaves in the garden while my mother and father filled the kitchen with aromas of home-cooked delights. With the days shortening and the air developing a slight chill, it’s time to turn to food that warms the heart, comforts the soul and

38

puts a satisfying smile on the face. I try to achieve all of this with my restaurant menus. September also reminds me how quickly time goes by; only recently, we launched our Christmas menus in all three restaurants. Where has the year gone? As an antidote to the rapid passing of time and to those seeking some solace from the colder days, in this issue I share with you one of my all time favourite puddings apple and ginger crumble. Enjoy!

With the days shortening and the air developing a slight chill, it’s time to turn to food that warms the heart, comforts the soul and puts a satisfying smile on the face.

Apple and ginger crumble topped with roasted hazelnuts and vanilla caramel sauce Ingredients: 1kg cooking apples 100g sugar 50g or more chopped stem ginger 30g butter Caster sugar (dusting to cover) 200g ginger nut biscuits 30g hazelnuts Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 190C. 2. Peel, core and chop apples into chunky pieces. Put in a pan with 100g of sugar and a 1tbsp of water. Cook gently until apples look soft. Put in a dish. Add about 1tbsp of chopped stem ginger. Add more if you want it really ‘gingery’. 3. To make the crumble topping, mix crushed ginger biscuits and a little butter with the crushed hazelnuts. Cover the apples and then top with some caster sugar to give a crisp top. Bake in the centre of the oven for 2530 minutes. 4. For the sauce, heat 200g of sugar in a pan until it turns to a golden caramel. Add 50g of butter and allow to melt in. Then add 150ml of cream, adding slowly so it doesn’t set the sugar. 5. Add a couple of drips of vanilla extract at the end and mix. Serve while still hot.

JAYNE’S MUST-HAVES FOR HER JAYNE’S MUST-HAVES FOR HER HAIR HEROES Fortunately I’m privy to some little tricks, the best products to use and dos and don’ts of the hair kind, and in this issue I have decided to share just a few. The Bristle Brush Company

Jayne Mahon

I bet we would all agree that our everyday brush has seen better days, unloved full of hair and probably with the bristles melted into some awful shapes. The best piece of advice I can give is to get your mitts on the best brush you can. My number one must-have is from the Bristle Brush Company. This little gem is made from all natural bristles, which means that it helps to glide through the hair without a snag. With a cork handle to make it easy to grip, this star will be the best friend to anyone, even those of us who have the naughtiest of locks. www.thebristlebrushcompany.com

Kérastase Forme Fatale

My hero product of the moment has to be Kérastase Forme Fatale. With the fabulous Kate Moss as the face of this striking range, this blow dry product has a gel consistency that will add all-over body and volume. It also has a long lasting flexible hold with UV protection and will help with any little flyaway hairs. What more could you want; big bouncy hair that will last all day and all night. Kérastase Forme Fatale is available from Andrew Collinge salons: www.andrewcollinge.com

Messy Braids

Keeping a hair band in your bag is a must; if you’re invited for last minute drinks and you want to change your style, go for the look of the moment, a messy braid. Remember learning how to do this many years ago? Well it’s time to dust off those skills and get practicing. Try and channel Mathew Williamson’s look for autumn / winter 2013. So get on the case, ladies, and rock this look in the coming months.

MUST-HAVES

Collinge Art Director Jayne Mahon share their autumn obsessions.

MATT’S MUST-HAVES FOR HIM ‘BURGER ME!’ Liverpool V Manchester - it’s a fight that goes back years and one that until recently, Manchester was winning, but only when it comes to burgers. Then lo and behold, three world class modern burger joints opened up in Liverpool within weeks of each other. Almost Famous The original bad boy from down the M62; they often queue out of the building and down the street for these beefy treats, and for good reason - these guys take burgers to another level. Great big lovely beef patties, brioche buns and with a plethora of fries and wings on offer as well, this is a meat loves paradise. Throw in a very well stocked bar and a good music policy and you’ve got a proper night out. www.almostfamousburgers.com

Matt Littler

Free State Kitchen

Up by the Philharmonic is a little spot serving up a symphony of food - we’re still talking burgers, hotdogs and chilli fries but that’s not a bad thing. Burgers aren’t the staple of greasy food wagons on A-roads anymore, these guys more than prove that done right they can be up there with much fussier fair. This gaff has got a lovely garden, too, so you can sit outside and dry out your meat sweats. www.freestatekitchen.co.uk

Byron

Hailing from London, this is probably the most commercial of the bunch with branches all over the capital. Byron do for burgers and fries what Nando’s has done for chicken and chips, easy good food, done right. The restaurant in Liverpool ONE is bright and classy, and might be a nice first foray into the modern burger movement. www.byronhamburgers.com

An Insider’s Guide to Femme Fatale words: Hannah Ramsay

C

hristine Edun, from Formby, who is the owner and founder of Femme Fatale, a website where you can source just the vintage pieces you need to master the trend, is only too aware of the power of vintage. Christine, a forensic psychiatric nurse by day, spends her free time and weekends working on the business, which has grown out of her love of all things vintage. While at school, it was the Victorian era in particular that captured Christine’s imagination, but it’s now a love for the forties, a passion she indulges by shunning today’s high street offerings and instead wearing tea dresses and styling her hair in victory rolls, that inspires Christine. It is this complete immersion in the subject that enables Christine to personally and expertly select the online stock. And the result of her effort is clear to see; an eclectic mix of artefacts and lingerie, the site is certainly not your run of the mill vintage boutique. Split into two main categories, ‘Bedroom’ offers

44

everything you could need to create the ultimate vintage boudoir; from powder pots to compacts and hangers to laundry bags. ‘Lingerie’ meanwhile, offers exactly what it suggests, and more. There are girdles and bralets in summery peaches and pinks as well as silk slips and nightdresses with exquisite lace detailing. There are also some fabulous, authentically oversized panties, as well as original seamed stockings. And it is pieces like this that are the perfect way of tapping into the trend. The feminine slip is fast becoming an easy-to-wear summer staple, while bralets are continuing to gain popularity, teamed with a high-waisted skirt. What’s more, there is only one of each piece available on the website, so you can almost guarantee that your underwear will be unique. What better reason could you find for embracing this season’s underwear as outerwear trend? www.femme-fatale.co.uk

With the underwear as outerwear trend still going strong this summer, there’s never been more of a market for authentic vintage lingerie.

disruption, shook their heads sadly and declared it “not very Audi”. Happily, once our flight had landed at Budapest Airport, where a large area of the arrivals floor had been transformed into a chic Audi VIP reception area where we were served with refreshments and given our itinerary for our test-drive, things were once again “very Audi”. Rows of Audi’s new A3 Saloon model, fresh from their Hungarian production plant, lined the airport car park, gleaming enticingly in the sunshine. We began our test drive with a quick spin to the beautiful Károlyi Castle in Fehérvárcsurgó. Our A3 was unsurprisingly easy on the eye, with the

fluid, flowing design lines you’d expect from the brand, and before we’d even started up the engine, we were quietly impressed by nice touches like the Bang & Olufsen sound system (which not only sounds great, it also looks just right, with the speakers’ clean lines nicely echoing the curves of the rest of the interior). The luxurious feel of the interior is surprising given the A3 Saloon’s relatively modest price point (starting from just £24,305). After our positive initial impressions, the drive was smooth and countless high-tech fuss-free features, including ‘Audi Connect’, which goes far beyond simple Sat Nav to deliver everything you need from the internet within your car, parking aids and adaptive cruise control all combining to make the driving

experience a pleasant one. Once we’d arrived at Fehérvárcsurgó, Audi’s design team told the assembled press a little more about the A3 Saloon, which has been produced about an hour away, in the heart of Hungary. As threeand-a-half million A3s have been sold since 1996, the team seemed quietly confident that the Saloon will cause a big stir when it enters the marketplace in September. Once we’d been fully briefed, members of the press were clearly itching to get back into their Audis for the final leg of our test drive. After driving through the countryside, making a few minor detours to admire the scenery, we headed into the heart of Budapest, approaching our final destination, the stunning Four Seasons Hotel via the famous Chain Bridge. As we neared the hotel, taking in the breathtakingly beautiful views

48

across the Danube, I was briefly lost for words. If you ever get the chance to take this drive, I’d highly recommend it. As we pulled up outside the hotel, Audi flags fluttered in the breeze and several A3 Saloons were stationed in front of the hotel, attracting admiring glances from passersby. The stunning Art Nouveau hotel features a staggeringly impressive reception area where Audi currently have their own check-in desk and an area dedicated to the Audi Saloon. Not every car manufacturer could carry off positioning their branding so prominently amidst such awe inspiring classical architecture, but Audi does so with aplomb, reinforcing the notion that theirs is a brand that’s inextricably linked with classic style and luxury. If you’d like to snap up your own slice of affordable luxury, look out for the new Audi Saloon, which will be making its way from its Hungarian home place to a showroom near you from September.

Trans-Seasonal Fashion Advice Stylist and personal shopper Joanne Watkinson shares her top tips for trans-seasonal dressing.

F

or the past few years our summer wardrobes have remained virtually untouched, tucked away like a dirty secret, wheeled out for our annual 14 day jaunt in the Med and then filed away again under “unsuitable for British weather,” but not this year. Thanks to a few weeks of glorious sunshine, we’ve been lucky enough to bust out our playsuits, break free of our skinny jeans and really enjoy warm weather fashion. The shops have been gearing up for the new season since June, pre collections have been dangling patiently from shop rails waiting to be appreciated, and now is their time. The end of summer signals a change in our wardrobes; the temperature may still be pleasant, but we no longer want to reach for the dresses we bought back in May. We want newness and there are a whole raft of trends just waiting to be discovered. Here are my tips for heading into the new season in style. Trans-seasonal dressing is about merging two adjacent seasons to make your look work for the climate. Think like a New Yorker; Manhattan ladies don’t do tights, even in winter, so when introducing more autumnal dresses, keep your (lightly tanned) legs bare. Layering is key to trans-seasonal dressing, but keep layers streamlined and in one colour. Accessories can really update your look; gold was all over the catwalks for autumn/winter so trade in your summer fluorescents for layered gold chains. It’s time to mothball anything that screams summer holidays - think crochet, flip flops, kaftans and festival headbands. For autumn/winter, masculine tailoring is set to be a big influence. Opt for lightweight versions of this trend for now. Matching tops and skirts are the feminine alternative to a suit. Blackpool sparkles during its biggest weekend of the year This year, organisers promised the most spectacular switch-on of the Blackpool Illuminations to date, enlisting the help of broadcaster Jonathan Ross and a host of music legends to make the seaside town sparkle.

housands of visitors flock from around the North West every year for the big switch on, which will take place on 30th August. Celebrity broadcaster Jonathan Ross will flick the all-important switch for this year’s event before Irish rockers The Script take to the stage with special guest Eliza Doolittle. The next evening on Saturday 31st August, legendary band Madness will headline a second concert at Blackpool’s impressive The Tower Festival Headland. It will be the first time Blackpool has extended the popular annual event into a weekend celebration with tickets starting from just £20. Natalie Wyatt, Managing Director of Marketing Blackpool, said: “The line-up for the full weekend is fantastic and I hope to see many families, couples and

individuals enjoying the range of music on offer. When you add to that the unique event space that is The Tower Festival Headland this should be a great event. “This year is completely different to anything we have ever done before and we are really pulling out all the stops to arrange these two massive concerts!” The magical Blackpool Illuminations will keep the resort aglow for 73 nights from Friday, August 30 to Sunday, November 10. Pollyanna’s Charity Ball

From a champagne reception to delectable desserts, guests at the Pollyana’s Charity Ball at Pollards Inn were treated to a host of tempting treats. After being taken over by proud owners Jamie and Cara Kimpton, the last 18 months has been phenomenal in terms of the positive changes to Pollards Inn, and this charity event really did provide evidence of this. The fundraising ball was held by The Pollyanna Association (a small group of hardworking local women wanting to make a difference) in a beautifully constructed marquee in the grounds of the pub. A fantastic £4,000 was raised in aid of the British Red Cross on the night.

The Fat Cat Fix up

After over 12 years in business, the Fat Cat chain fell into administration this May. After being taken over by experienced new owners, this popular Chester venue was re-opened as Linenhall just 12 days later. Its refurbishment will begin in autumn, giving a brand new theme and decor to this well loved city centre venue. Craig Phillips, the new manager who has many years experience within the hospitality industry, said: “I’m looking forwards to providing Chester with a stylish new dining venue where good service and value for money come as standard.”

Michelangelo’s celebrates its first birthday with a new menu launch Popular Liverpool restaurant Michelangelo’s, which is located within the Blenheim Lakeside Hotel, overlooking Sefton Park’s picturesque lake, has celebrated its first birthday with the launch of a tempting new menu. The eatery, which provides guests with an intimate and inviting setting, opened its doors in South Liverpool back in July 2012. Chief Executive Conor O’Donovan said: “We have had a fantastic 12 months at the restaurant and there was no better way to celebrate than to look at the menu and give it a whole new look, by keeping what works and adding some new dishes that we know will appeal to our existing and new diners.” Turn to p60 to read our Michelangelo’s review in full.

Customers have been ordering the ‘Little Prince’, also known as ‘The LP’, which consists of peaches and raspberries and costs just £2.95. The bar also created a special cocktail for The Duchess when she visited last year. The Brink is a revolutionary social venture, which opened in September 2011, and is the UK’s first dry bar and restaurant, serving locally sourced fresh food, and an imaginative array of non-alcoholic drinks.

The RHS Flower Show, Tatton Park

His & Hers joined a throng of flower enthusiasts at Tatton on a day full of sunshine and excitement. People hurried past carrying lush plants that towered above them. There were breath-taking show gardens, underpinned by creative design and lovely planting. A dizzying array of stalls showcased quality produce that was too good to miss. Phil Hirst’s garden: ‘A Stainless Century’ was Best Large Garden in the show. The Mypod Garden (perfectly reflecting the galaxy theme) and the beautiful Precious Resources Garden picked up 2013 People’s Choice awards. It was a great day out.

Business leaders turn out in force to celebrate a successful 2013 at Downtown’s COLBA Awards

The region’s business leaders assembled at The Palm House to toast a successful year at the City of Liverpool Business Awards. His & Hers attended as a guest of nominees Moore Media, a leading North West PR and marketing agency which headed into 2013 with a flurry of high-profile client wins. We were also delighted to raise a glass to advertisers Hard Days Night, Malmaison and Hotel Indigo, all of whom snapped up prestigious awards on the night. It was also a night of celebrations for Downtown, which has continued its expansion with the appointment of well-known marketeer, Mark Asquith. Speaking of his appointment, Mark said: “This is a really exciting time to be joining Downtown, with membership at an all-time high and an array of new and revamped marketing tools in the pipeline. Having already worked alongside the team on several projects, it’s great to be joining their ranks and plotting a future course for Downtown.”

The Boodles Classique at The Mere Golf Resort & Spa

His & Hers was delighted to attend this summer’s Boodles Classique, which featured more Wimbledon champions than Wimbledon itself! This was far from being the only impressive statistic at an event where 2,500 bottles of wine and 1,000 bottles of champagne were uncorked for 1,200 glamorous guests. This was the first time that the prestigious event had been held at the luxury Cheshire resort following its £15m refurbishment last year. The Mere’s impressive facilities and picturesque setting made it the perfect backdrop for this glittering event with tennis stars including Goran Ivanisevic, Richard Krajicek, Mark Philippoussis, Peter McNamara, Mikael Pernfors and Anders Jarryd. “We’re thrilled to be welcoming our guests, sponsors and players to the resort. Having seen all the hard work and preparation that has gone into this prestigious event, I know it will be a fabulous three days of tennis, hospitality and entertainment and we hope everyone has a fantastic time,” commented Mark Boler, CEO and co-owner, The Mere Golf Resort & Spa.

Lunch by the Lake at Michelangelo’s Restaurant Welcome to the restaurant where the food and views are a cut above the rest.

T

he location is perfect: the Blenheim Lakeside Hotel is an imposing Victorian villa nestled amongst the lush greenery of Sefton Park, with a panoramic view of the lake. There was something of a buzz as we arrived: Astrid’s bar, full of vintage Beatles photographs by Astrid Kirchherr, looked intriguing, but His & Hers had an invitation to lunch. Michelangelo’s has sumptuous lighting, otherwise the interior is soft greens and pale wood, a relaxing place to gaze out at lapping water, joggers and families with toddlers enjoying a sunny summer afternoon. We were warmly welcomed and then it was on to the serious task of ordering food. A starter and main course for Sunday lunch is a steal at £12.95. The service was excellent: my companion mentioned his preference for Rioja and a bottle was being uncorked in a matter of moments. Meat and vegetables are locally sourced and the Early Doors Menu has an impressive range: from classic, to Italian to home-made burgers to a medley of steak dishes. There’s a wide choice of starters; the goats cheese and garlic field mushrooms with basil pesto had a wonderful mix of flavours. The barbecue ribs in ginger chilli hoisin take four hours to prepare, which meant the meat had absorbed dense piquant flavours and was so tender it fell off the bone. The pan fried sea bass was a classic with a twist – the pink peppercorn sauce gave it an extra kick. The roast honey glazed ham was

60

wonderfully tender but it was the homemade apple sauce, gravy and Yorkshire pudding that made the dish. The presentation was impeccable, particularly with the cold cut vanilla cheesecake, which was a work of art. The Eton Mess came with brownies added to the mix and it was a very fine mess indeed. I remembered that I used to row across the lake when I was a schoolgirl and then I realised it would be me jogging round the park next day, but if it means I can still find room for the dessert, next time around… Tel: 0151 727 7380, email: enquiries@ blenheimlakesidehotel.com

Classic City Dining at Gusto This summer may have seen a new crop of restaurant launches in the North West, but it’s our old favourite, Gusto, which keeps His & Hers coming back for more.

O

ver the past ten years, the route from the Albert Dock to Liverpool city centre has changed beyond recognition with an array of restaurants opening. Of course this can only be a good thing, but no matter how much you enjoy seeking out the next big thing, if it’s the best restaurant in town you’re after, it’s likely to be one like Gusto which has been quietly pulling in the crowds year after year, rather than the new ‘it’ eatery. His & Hers has been coming to Gusto, a chic, pretension-free Italian, for longer than we care to remember and although our walk home from the restaurant has changed immeasurably with the arrival of Liverpool ONE and the Echo Arena, once you step inside the restaurant, you’ll find plenty that’s reassuringly familiar. The staff are always friendly, the bar and restaurant is almost always bustling and they were serving perfect pizzas and cocktails back when most Liverpool bars

and restaurants were little more than a twinkle in a planning officer’s eye. During our most recent visit to Gusto, we feasted on a rather indulgent pizza and our advice would be to ditch the diet while you’re here. Despite the genuinely tempting salad menu, the delicious cooking aromas and cooing of your fellow diners, all of whom are likely to be devouring carbohydrates, will almost certainly break your willpower. Plus, the pizzas here are really very good indeed. And with that diet dispensed with, we’d recommend checking out the cocktail menu. The bar staff really know what they’re doing and have been quietly serving up some of the best cocktails in the city for years. For dessert, we tucked into Gusto’s ludicrously tasty Bombolini (handmade mini donuts). We left promising to return soon, and we’ll be keeping that promise. This restaurant’s not only survived but thrived in the city for a reason! www.gustorestaurants.uk.com

‘Around the World in 80 Beers’ with Bierkeller His & Hers paid a visit to Liverpool ONE’s perennially popular Bierkeller for the inside scoop on their first ‘Around the World in 80 Beers’ international night.

62

H

aving accepted a mid-week invitation to check out a new themed evening at one of Liverpool’s most popular bars, His & Hers made our way through the city centre, which felt eerily quiet. However, once we stepped inside Bierkeller, we soon realised that this was where all our fellow residents had been hiding out! ‘Around the World in 80 Beers’ is one of several big bars within Bierkeller and although, unsurprisingly, it’s best known for its extensive list of international beers, it also specialises in tasty snacks from around the globe. During the first international night, accomplished Brazilian dancers brought a dash of grace and colour to the city centre while guests sampled food and drink with a South American flavour. The bar’s owners promise that there’ll be more dates announced for international nights soon, giving them an opportunity to showcase their extensive list of beers while bringing some virtual sunshine to the city through the autumn and winter months. A visit to Delifonseca, Dockside

His & Hers (a party of four) were invited for lunch at Delifonseca, Brunswick Quay, in the middle of a heat-wave in high summer (unlikely but true). It felt like the perfect location: a gentle breeze wafted dockside and the verandah seating outside the restaurant was filled with happy eaters soaking up the sun.

M

WORDS: Jean Hill

artin Cooper, Head Chef at Brunswick Quay, has been with Delifonseca since it opened in Stanley Street in 2006. He has a reputation for being creative and using quality ingredients in his award winning cuisine, so we knew lunch was going to be something special. Once inside, the restaurant looks like a refined upmarket diner. There are booths and tables and the décor is a mix of natural wood and eau de nil matt-painted walls. Louise was our capable guide and after a brief chat, we tucked into our starters of crispy flavoursome bread and hummus. The house red Merlot tasted wonderful. The mains menus were in front of us and it was time to make a choice. Everything sounded so tempting, but this was my main: Fillet of Hake, roasted with Piquillo Pepper and Sun-blushed Tomato Tapenade, served with chunky chips. It was a delicious

combination of flavours. My companions went for Comfit of Duck infused with orange, roasted beetroot and chorizo: I wonder if they had time to reflect on the subtle blend of flavours because the food disappeared off their plates in moments. On to the desserts: it had to be Strawberry Eton Mess: rich ripe strawberries with home-made meringues. I’m assured that the Caramel Swirl Tart with Cheshire ice-cream was ‘simply the best’. We then moved on to the Delicatessen to purchase bread, cheeses and strawberries. It’s a great space to explore and I felt quite nostalgic because when I lived in Canada I used to spend quality time at the local German delicatessen. Delifonseca is a great venue and the fact that you can eat your cake and still take almost identical cake home is an experience that is hard to beat. www.delifonseca.co.uk

An invitation to dine with the Urban Rajah Enjoying an evening of food, drink and memories with Ivor Peters and the House Beauty Spa

I

t was a warm sunlit evening and His & Hers had a compelling yet intriguing invitation to attend the House Beauty Spa Book Club (always interesting, increasingly popular events) this time held at the Holdi Bar, Restaurant and Lounge, located in the leafy byways of Woolton Village. Intriguing because the featured book: ‘The Urban Rajah’s Curry Memoirs’ is written by Ivor Peters, a name that hints at a Welsh heritage, explained by the fact that missionaries in India chose British names for children in their care (a legacy from his parents). The book is partly family history, steeped in a food tradition from the Indian subcontinent. Peters, growing up in England, was entranced by vivid spiced curries created from family recipes that had passed through three generations and crossed three continents. Book Club guests were treated to fine Bangladeshi cuisine at Holdi, which set the tone, perfectly, for the author to talk about his early life, charity projects, and his rather desirable curry cook book. Peters is, by nature, an entertainer and we were invited to share in a culinary history that included stories of family where men were more involved in cooking for special occasions than women, but all celebrated the rich tradition. The cook book is essentially a collection of recipes gleaned from Peters’ childhood, yet it’s also a family history, because you can’t fully appreciate one without the other. Family photographs illuminate the recipes and the recipes

WORDS: Jean HilL

are personalised and given life by descriptions of his family. At the end of the evening, Peters signed copies of his book and chatted to every guest in the long and winding queue. His enthusiasm is catching. I found myself telling him how I used to love cooking chapattis and Indian cuisine; he’s written a note on my copy saying he hopes his book will take me back to cooking Indian cuisine (particularly chapattis because they’re his favourite food), and because the recipes are authentic and a celebration of life, they do just that.
