...at the arcade

Shop, Arcade Newsstand, Zimmerman’s Tobacco Store, and The Dog Wagon. Clothing stores included The Men’s Value Shop, The Children’s Shop, and Irving’s, a women’s clothing store. Beauty salons and barbershops throughout the years included the Bryant Beauty Salon, Edna’s Beauty Salon, Gibb’s Barber Shop, and the Stylette Beauty Shop.

Today, the word ‘arcade’ brings to mind the flashing lights, pings, and bells of pinball machines, skeeball, virtual golf games, PacMan consoles, and the like. One hundred years ago, however, an arcade was defined as a succession of contiguous arches supported by columns. Designed for pedestrians to be out of the elements, many shops and markets lined on either side for shopping convenience. Charleston boasted The Arcade, a downtown landmark serving its residents for 103 years. Constructed in 1895, primarily of wrought iron, The Arcade was a beautiful structure in the center of downtown Charleston. With an entry on Virginia Street and another one adjacent to the Kanawha County Library building (formerly known as Post Office Square), scores of shoppers had easy access to visit the stores within. The Arcade was built by John Cotton and his brother-in-law, Emanuel Wilson, who was elected governor in 1884. The second-floor balcony railings and stair railings were filigree wrought iron. The ceiling was glass, allowing light to flood the atrium interior. In later years, the glass was cover with corrugated plastic, still allowed light to pass through.

Although strictly a pedestrian walkway, V-E Day in 1945 saw as many as a dozen cars drive through The Arcade honking their horns in celebration of the end of World War II. Several times through the years, graduating high school seniors defied the law and would drive through in celebration after their graduations. And much to the chagrin of the city leaders, one night in the wee hours of the morning, two police patrolmen opted against their regular practice of parking on the street and patrolling The Arcade on foot, instead driving their patrol car the length of the building. They made a formal apology to the building’s owners in lieu of more formal disciplinary action. After 103 years, the building was sold and The Arcade was demolished on September 13, 1998. Much of the wrought ironwork was salvaged, intended to be used in an adjacent hotel. That did not come to pass, and the location of the intricate ironwork is unknown. A Charleston landmark, like many others, fell to the wrecking ball. Next month, Looking Back remembers the salt mines of the upper Kanawha Valley.

Two stories of shops lined The Arcade throughway. Among the shops were the Virginia Fruit Company, which became McCarus Confectionary, then McCarus Grille, and finally, the Arcadia Restaurant. Others over the years include Corey’s Arcade Fruitstand, Older’s Drug Store, Arcade Jewelry

Driving a little under seven hours northwest of Charleston takes you to South Bend, Indiana, known as “The Bend”. This picturesque town is home to the prestigious University of Notre Dame, impressive museums, a historic theatre, and a stunning downtown water feature. You’ll feel you’ve cruised into a much bigger city with the scale of offerings in The Bend.

The biggest name in South Bend is Studebaker, and a visit to the National Museum should be a top priority. This treasure-trove has three floors of cars, buggies, and other signature items, and an impressive Presidential collection with carriages that belonged to Lincoln, Grant, McKinley, and Harrison. Admission also includes a tour of the incredible 38-room Oliver Mansion.

the 23-acre Potowatomi Zoo. The zoo features over 500 animals, including tamarin, owls, kudu, leopards, camels, and zebra. Delight your inner shopper with Eddy Street Commons’ offerings, then treat yourself to a sweet treat (or coffee drink) from South Bend Chocolate Company. Shop for clothing and accessories at the University Plaza Mall. They also have a BuildA-Bear Workshop, Sephora, Apple, and Barnes & Noble.

Brewery, and enjoy a tantalizing bowl of ramen, a pulled pork sandwich, or one of the fantastic appetizers choices like crispy cauliflower, elote hushpuppies, and poutine. South Bend has two upscale restaurants that are highly recommended: LaSalle Grille and Tippecanoe Place Restaurant. At LaSalle Grill, indulge in a perfectly cooked steak and side of Mac and cheese, but save room for fruit cobbler or creme brûlée. At Tippecanoe, the Studebaker family’s stunning former home (and National Historic Landmark), try the Chef’s Pasta Creation or the Perfect Prime Rib. There is also a casual brewery on the second floor with a limited menu.

includes visiting all three floors of the beautiful Romanesque Queen Anne home, complete with a Tiffany leaded glass dome. After touring museums and homes, consider a live concert or performance at the 100+-year-old Morris Performing Arts Center, once a vaudeville venue.

At night, stroll River Lights Plaza to admire the”Keepers of the Fire” sculpture and light show on the St. Joseph River, with shades of green, blue, and pink dancing across the night. The mesmerizing show starts 1/2 hour before sunset and continues until midnight.

WHERE TO EAT AND DRINK IN SOUTH BEND Eat breakfast at Macadoo’s Family Restaurant, voted “best breakfast in town,” where the homemade biscuits and sausage gravy are spectacular. Another great choice is the Yellow Cat Cafe, specializing in ham steaks and breakfast burritos.

WHERE TO STAY IN SOUTH BEND

South Bend is a college town, so strolling through the University of Notre Dame’s campus is suggested. Home of the Fighting Irish, founded in 1842, Notre Dame has pristine grounds, the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes (an Italian replica of a famous Catholic religious spot), and the symbol of the school, its Golden Dome. Another popular photo-op is Touchdown Jesus, the library wall’s mural that faces the football stadium. Afterward, you may want to swing by the College Football Hall of Fame.

For lunch, BRU Burger Bar is a popular spot for upscale burgers, hot chicken, charcuterie boards, and chili cheese fries, or have your favorite pizza pie from Bruno’s Pizza.

South Bend’s premier hotel is the stylish Aloft South Bend in the heart of town, with a relaxed lobby bar, billiards, board games, and a well-stocked bar. The hotel offers free Wifi and comfortable accommodations. There are several chain hotels with wide ranges of pricing, from DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, La Quinta Inn & Suites, Hampton Inn & Suites, and Morris Inn. For those wanting something more unique, Four Winds Casino South offers rooms, gaming, bars, and restaurants.
