At home for the holidays Hinsdale Magazine concludes the 2018 with this special holiday issue, featuring the Hinsdale Humane Society (HHS) and the Venetsanopoulos family. The Hinsdale family has supported the non-profit organization as volunteers for more than seven years. We asked HHS if we could visit a someone who has adopted from the humane society, and we were greeted by the family, along with their furry pets Maggie and Kali. You can get to know them on p. 36. The holiday season is a time of giving, and the humane society has proudly contributed to local families with adoptions dating back 65 years. If you have not visited HHS, the holiday season is a great time to do so. The former Robert Crown Center location has been transformed into a state-of-theart complex, complete with a full-time veterinarian, educational classes, coffee bar and of course, rows of lovable cats and dogs waiting for someone to adopt them. Please visit the new location at 21 Salt Creek Lane in Hinsdale, and you might return home with a new addition to the family. There is plenty to do in the Hinsdale area this month, and you will want to glance at our December To Do List on p. 18. You can begin your holiday shopping at the Dec. 7 Clarendon Hills Christmas Walk, featuring a tree-lighting ceremony, horse-drawn carriage rides, carolers, an ice-sculpture artist and plenty of food and drinks. You can skip over to The Community House to see “A Christmas Carol” in concert, and the next morning, you can have Breakfast with Santa at the same location. And remember to visit the Brookfield Zoo’s “Holiday Magic” light festival on Dec. 8 and 9, 15 and 16 and 22 and 23. Finally, take the “Holiday Express” at the Hinsdale train station to the “North
Pole,” (i.e. the Aurora train station). Tickets are given on a lottery basis, so visit www.hinsdalechamber.com in hopes of securing your seat with the family. In this month’s Spotlight feature, we introduce you to Hinsdale resident Hope Lloyd Brown, who is putting her art history degree to good use as the lead curator for Triad Art Group, her stepfather’s company. Brown recently assembled a catalog of a Salvador Dali collection, and gave a presentation about it at Acquisitions of Fine Art in Hinsdale last month on p. 50. Earlier this year, we gave our readers a look at Downers Grove-based Diveheart, a non-profit organization founded by Jim Elliott, who is attempting to change the way people view disabilities. “When Maggie sees that Kali is relaxed around other people, it helps her understand that its safe,’’ Daphne said. Kristen recalled the first time they laid eyes on their little “misfit,” who was missing some teeth, and has one ear different from the other. “She did her little twirls in the pen when we walked up to her and stole our hearts,” she said. “She does that little twirl anytime she wants something or is happy.” The Venetsanopoulos were in attendance for HHS’s grand opening weekend, which produced 16 adoptions (three dogs and 13 cats and kittens). In addition to having a thorough adoption process, Robin Carroll, the humane society’s marketing director, said the new

facility has a humane education space, a puppy-bowl training center, enrichment for all of the animals and a fear-free sheltering designation. “The Hinsdale Humane Society is training staff members on fear-free sheltering practices that nurture the emotional wellbeing of animals as much as the physical,” Carroll said. “The shelter allows for the rescue of more than double the animals from the previous location.” n Families interested in adopting an animal can visit www.hinsdalehumanesociety.org.

2018 Year-End Checklist The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) of 2017 has resulted in significant changes to individual tax rates, deductions, credits, and exemptions. Most of the individual provisions in the new law will apply for eight tax years, starting in 2018 and continuing through the end of 2025. Understanding the impact of these changing federal tax laws will better equip you to review and modify your retirement income needs and strategies as appropriate. Below you will find the following checklist that includes some common tax topics that could provide tax strategies for you to consider. Keep in mind that this list is only a preliminary guide. Consider it a starting place.
Lower Tax Rates
The new law still includes seven individual tax rates, ranging from 10% to 37% depending on filing status and taxable income. With a possible tax hike on the horizon after 2025, this could be a relatively short period of time with the lowest tax rates many have seen, so you may want to consider these strategies: 1. Roth IRA Conversion: The conversion of qualified plan assets or traditional IRAs to a Roth IRA, to the extent of staying within your current tax bracket, can be a useful tool if you expect to be in a higher tax bracket during retirement. With this strategy you pay taxes today in exchange for tax-free income later when qualified distributions are taken. 2. Roth 401(k): With current tax rates temporarily lower, you may see a benefit in contributing to a Roth 401(k) versus deferring taxes with a traditional 401(k) contribution. 3. Use of Annuities and Life Insurance: Lower taxes may equate to more income available for savings. Creating a safety net for future needs – without adding an additional tax burden – can be attractive for some individuals. Annuities and cash value life insurance may be great tools for helping to do that.
Higher Standard Deductions and Changes to Itemized Deductions
The TCJA doubled the 2018 deductions to $12,000 for an individual, and $24,000 for married, filing jointly. In addition, the child tax credit increased to $2,000 until 2026. TCJA also eliminated personal and dependency exemptions until 2026. Also, many changes were made to specific itemized deductions under the new law but here are some of the major ones. 1. State and Local Taxes: Under TCJA, individuals would be allowed to deduct up to $10,000, or $5,000 for married taxpayers filing separately, in aggregate for the total of state and local income taxes and property taxes in 2018. 2. Medical Expenses: The TCJA temporarily reduces the threshold for deductions of medical expenses to 7.5% or AGI for 2017 and 2018 only. 3. Mortgage Interest: The home mortgage interest deduction is modified to reduce the limit on acquisition indebtedness for individuals from the previous $1 million limit ($500,000 for married taxpayers, filing separately)
to $750,000 for individuals (or $375,000 for married taxpayers, filing separately) for acquisition debt incurred after 12/15/2017. 4. Home Equity Loan Interest: Elimination of deduction for interest on home equity loans without any grandfathering for existing home equity indebtedness starts in 2018, unless used to buy, build, or substantially improve the home that secures the loan. 5. Charitable Contributions: TCJA increases the income-based percentage limit for charitable contributions of cash to public charities to 60% of AGI. 6. Moving Expenses & Reimbursements: The moving expense deduction is repealed, except for members of the armed forces on active duty who move pursuant to a military order and incident to a permanent change of station. 7. Alimony: For any divorce or separation agreement executed after 12/31/2018, alimony and maintenance payments are not deductible by the payor spouse. TCJA also repeals the provisions that provide such payments may be included in income by the payee.
Gift and Estate Tax
The TCJA also significantly increased the gift and estate tax exemption. In 2018, the $11.18 million exemption applies to gifts and estate taxes combined—whatever exemption you use for gifting will reduce the amount you can use for the estate tax. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) refers to this as a “unified credit.” Each donor has a separate lifetime exemption that can be used before any out-of-pocket gift tax is due. A married couple can combine their exemptions to get a total exemption of over $22.36 million. In addition, in 2018 you can give any number of people up to $15,000 each in a single year without incurring a taxable gift ($30,000 for spouses “splitting” gifts). However, if your gift exceeds $15,000 to any person during the year, you must report it on a gift tax return (IRS Form 709). Once you give more than the annual gift tax exclusion, you begin to cut into your lifetime gift and estate tax exemption. Consider the following: 1. Make annual exclusion gifts: Annual exclusion gifts of a present interest of $15,000 for 2018 (indexed in future years) can be given to anyone without incurring a federal gift tax. 2. Consider generation-skipping transfers: For 2018, the generation-skipping transfer (GST) tax rate is 40%, and every taxpayer has $11,180,000 million of GST exemption applicable both to lifetime and testamentary transfers. If you have a substantial estate and wish to benefit future generations, making gifts to grandchildren might provide estate and gift tax benefits. 3. Timely file IRS Form 706: Portability of the federal estate tax exemption between married couples means that if the first spouse dies and the value of the estate does not require the use of all of the deceased spouse’s federal exemption from estate taxes, then the amount of the exemption that was not used for the deceased spouse’s estate may be transferred to the surviving spouse’s exemption.

A
n impressive piece of Hinsdale history is for sale. 841 S. County Line Road, built in 1928 by Robert Aiken Gardiner for his second wife Kathryn, offers a look into the grand lives of Hinsdale’s well-to-do. Gardiner, who was president of Gardiner Metal Company in Chicago (which is still in business today), spared no expense in building a gigantic Norman Rockwell-style home for his wife, featuring leadedglass windows, mahogany millwork and doors, oak floors and enormous rooms throughout. “You just can’t afford to build like that anymore,” said Berkshire Hathaway listing agent Lisa Read, noting that the

lot size alone, 300-by-100 feet, sets it apart, allowing for seemingly endless front and backyards. The historic English brick home was completely gutted in 2010, with a second renovation in 2018. “The homeowners took great pains to preserve and match the home’s original grandeur,” Read said. “They restored all the original hardwood floors, restored the original fireplaces and rewired a number of original light fixtures. They even had custom double-leaded windows made for the family-room addition. They were very meticulous.” In fact, the homeowners were awarded preservation award from the Hinsdale Historical Society after their extensive rehab in 2010.

While the five-bedroom, six-bathroom home offers the charm and authenticity of its past, it also boasts a number of brand new bells and whistles, including a completely renovated gourmet kitchen, a mudroom/laundry room with Romar cabinets and lockers, a family room with wet bar, a threeseason screened-in porch with bluestone floors and a master bath with Ann Sacks tile, Thasso marble, Swaorvski crystal hardware and refrigerated drawers for chilled beverages (so you don’t have to walk all the way downstairs for a glass of wine). The basement rec room, rehabbed in 2018, features a modern, gray, porcelain-tiled floor and endless storage. But if there’s one room in the house that really stands out,
Read said it’s the grand formal dining room. Featuring original mahogany-paneled walls and doors, a restored pulled-plaster ceiling and restored leaded windows, the spacious dining room is a peek into a more genteel time. “It’s like the dining room in Downton Abbey,” Read said. “It’s so spectacular—it’s just an incredible room for entertaining.” While the world has changed considerably since the Gardiner family lived at 841 S. County Line Road, the home has stood the test of time, Read said. “This is truly old-school Hinsdale.” n

ost of the artistry that is regularly on display in Hinsdale and s urro undi n g communities is of the professional variety, consisting of men and women who apply their acquired skillsets to their respective crafts. But for Hinsdale resident and native Hope Lloyd Brown, studying fine art is part of the family business and her everyday career. Brown, who previously consulted and advised for art connoisseurs in the Chicagoland area, is now the primary curator for her stepfather’s company Triad Art Group, which functions as a resource to high-end art galleries. Growing up in Hinsdale, Brown said she had an affinity for history since high school, and began her collegiate journey as a general history major, concentrating on architecture and historic preservation. “I was a history major from day one of college,” Brown said. … “I was always a historian first. I started studying art history, because I was studying Gothic architecture.” Pursuing a second major in art history, Brown proceeded to earn a master’s degree in the subject as well. But notwithstanding her interest in art, she said she has never dabbled in furnishing her own creations, being more fascinated by the history of its development. “I like the history and education part of it more,” Brown said. “I’m not an artist; I don’t paint—I’ve never been an artist of any sort.” Her mother remarrying, Brown said stepfather and Triad owner Greg Bloch, whom she calls “the smartest man [she] has ever met,” has been a tremendous resource for her as she has adapted her career in recent years. “I wish that I could just absorb everything that he knows,” she said. Brown described working with Triad as involving a “huge learning curve.” “Before, I was working with individuals and designers, just acquiring art from different artists, different galleries,” she said. ... “Now with Triad, it’s much more focused, and much more academic. I have to do a lot more research.” This year, Brown has been specifically dedicating herself to researching the famous 20th-century surrealist Salvador Dali, as Triad works with the Pierre Argillet collection of etchings Dali constructed between 1958 and 1973. According to Brown, Triad has a relationship with Argillet’s son, who inherited the collection from his father. She recently completed and published a catalog accounting for all of the pieces in the collection. “It’s an amazing collection that Dali worked on for 15 years,” Brown said. On Nov. 15, Brown presented on the collection at Acquisitions of Fine Art in Hinsdale, where a selection from the artwork will be on display for a limited time.
“The best way to sell fine art is to know a tremendous amount about it,” she said. “In order to have somebody really invest in art, they need to feel like they know what they’re getting.” Prior to conducting research on the collection, Brown acknowledged that she was not very acquainted with Dali’s work. “I did not study contemporary art, other than a class here or a class there,” she said. ... “But Greg had sold this collection for 15 years.” Brown described Dali as “very complicated, both as a person and as an artist.” “He was incredibly scientifically-minded,” she said. “Everyone knows all of his theatrical [tendencies] and the melting clocks, [but] in reality, he was very, very interested in ‘big picture’ [questions]—what is religion, the atomic age, obscure geometric and mathematical [relations]. He wasn’t just this oddball, obscure surrealist guy; there was tremendous amount of skill and thought that went into everything that he did.” n

West suburban residents Amy and Joseph Molfese opened their first jewelry store in Willowbrook in 2000, and recently opened their second location on the North Shore in Wilmette. The location at 1149 Wilmette Ave. was the former Wilmette Jewelers, whose owners retired this year. The Bella Cosa owners saw an opportunity to serve their clientele from the city and north suburbs, and jumped at the chance of extending their service further. They took their attention-to-detail approach in custom jewelry, and renovated the 3,100-square-foot store to reflect its existing brand with impeccable attention to customer service. Hinsdale Magazine interviewed Joseph Molfese to talk about the company’s secret to longevity.
HM: What inspired you to start Bella Cosa Jewelers, and did your family’s jewelry background inspire you? JOSEPH MOLFESE:

before I started. I was working my own wholesale business when I met my wife. I did a lot of traveling at the time, and because I was getting married, it was best to set roots down in a community. The idea from the beginning was to be together and build something together.
HM: Why do you want to expand, and how did you choose your second location?
MOLFESE: Expanding to multiple locations is a natural progression for a successful business. When we heard that the owner of Wilmette Jewelers was retiring, we explored Wilmette, and got to know the community very well. We talked to our existing clients in Wilmette and the surrounding area, and they were very excited to see us come to their neighborhood. We did not want to just open a storefront; we wanted to be part of a community that valued their local businesses, and Wilmette

and the surrounding communities do that. In turn, the businesses help the local community.
HM:
Maybe you’re intrigued by a particular designer or line of jewelry; how do you select a piece that’s right for you?
MOLFESE:

NIGHT OF WONDER BALL
Wellness House hosted a sold-out evening with 550 guests at The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago on Oct. 20 for its annual black-tie ball. Night of Wonder raised nearly $690,000 for programs supporting those who are living with cancer, which was the second-largest amount raised in the 26year history of the organization. The evening featured a wine auction, live auction and paddle raise, which gave guests an opportunity to make donations in support of Wellness House programs. Guests were treated to a unique and exclusive experience, while they dined under the giant rotunda, danced until midnight and toured museum exhibits nearby. The highlight of the event was a moving video presentation and on-stage personal story of a family affected by cancer, and how Wellness House has provided them critical and meaningful support. All funds raised during the evening directly impact the lives of people affected by cancer through Wellness House programming. Many partnerships between people from different organizations work as or more seamlessly than intra-organizational relationships. In October, we reviewed the medical research of Dr. Milan Mrksich, a Hinsdale resident and professor at Northwestern University, and observed how naturally his group’s work aligns with and furthers the objectives of pharmaceutical companies in developing drugs. Downers Grove-based non-profit organization Diveheart, which extends deep-sea scuba-diving opportunities to individuals with disabilities in the

Chicagoland area, has established a similar partnership with Mark Kovic, associate professor in the college of health sciences at Midwestern University. Like Mrksich, Kovic’s work centers on research, and in his specialty area of occupational therapy, Diveheart has furnished ample materials for test subjects. “Right after I started Diveheart, I knew intuitively that we wanted to do research,” Diveheart founder Jim Elliott said, adding that research studies “build credibility for the program.” Roughly ten years ago, Elliott said he approached Midwestern University, and

The Christmas crib The crib in bedlam It was bedlam in the Harrison household on Christmas day. Wired on too many candy-canes and the frenzy of gifts too easily given and too quickly torn apart, the kids were running amok. When the two-year-old smashed the creche-scene in a fit of jealous rage, mom could take it no more. Grabbing young Tyler by the arm, she hauled him upstairs, and practically threw him into his playpen. The child wailed like his life was over, and though the door was slammed shut as his mother left, everyone downstairs could still hear the tantrum. A few minutes later, grandfather entered the child’s room. Tyler was clutching the edge of the playpen, and still jumping up and down, crying. At the sight of his grandfather, the boy’s little hands shot up, as he burbled through his tears, “Out, gramps, out!” It was only natural for the older man to reach down to lift the child out of his predicament. As he moved to do so, however, the voice of his daughter snapped from behind: “No, dad, that’s not helpful. Tyler, you are being punished—so you must stay in.” The grandfather was at a loss. The child’s tears and outstretched hands reached deeply into his heart, but the mother’s wisdom in correcting her son couldn’t be taken lightly. As he stepped back from the crib, Tyler’s wailing soared to a new pitch. Collecting herself in the kitchen a moment later, mom returned to the living room, shaking her head in exasperation. It was then that she noticed that the noise from above had stopped. “I don’t believe it,” she said. Quickly mounting the staircase, she burst through the bedroom door, her mouth already moving to berate her father for stopping the lesson before its work was done. But what she saw simply made her stand in shock. Grandpa had not removed the child from the playpen; he had climbed into the pen with him. Did it occur to her as she gazed into those quietly-blinking eyes and touched that puckered mouth, that this tiny, helpless infant in her arms was actually the most enormous presence and the greatest power in the universe? Did the significance of the words of the angel now really
come home to her—that this was not simply a baby she held, but “Emmanuel,” literally meaning “God with us?” Did she understand that on that holy night, the Most High God had climbed over the rail between eternity and time, and let himself down into the crib of humanity?—More importantly, do we? The meaning of it all What does it mean to you that God entered the crib of human flesh and life? I’ll tell you what it means to me. First, it means that God understands everything about the confines of human life that limit and stress us. He knows the fatigue and aches you feel at the end of a trying day. He has hit his thumb with a hammer, and suffered with a cold. God knows what it is to be hungry, to thirst and to have a headache. He understands what it’s like to feel pulled in a dozen different directions by clamoring people, and to not want to watch the news. God has felt the terror of his body giving out and shuddering under the cold, creeping shadow of death. That God came into the crib with us also means that God knows what it’s like to endure the consequences of human moral failure. He has felt what it is to live with angry or insensitive people. He gets what it is to be criticized, maligned and misunderstood. He knows the pull of temptation you feel, and the agony of hard choices. He understands loneliness and the pain of separation from those you love, or rejection by those whose love you want. He can be with you and me in these things, because he has been there himself. And finally, Christmas means that God offers hope and help for us all. It is important to remember that while the one we honor during this season has come into our crib, he comes from beyond it, from far “above the rail.” Like a cosmic grandparent, God has abilities we don’t have in ourselves. He can counsel us through our present troubles and tantrums. He can pronounce us forgiven of our failures, and grant us a new beginning. He has the capacity to carry us to new life, even after our bodies wear out. Whether we are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu or none of the above, every time we give good gifts to imperfect children, or stop to offer someone our full presence when we could have left them to struggle alone, we are entering into the mystery and marvel of what Christmas means. May yours be filled with grace.
