The launch of the all new Hino 300 Series light-duty truck has become the story of the upcoming 2012 model year. It’s certainly the story of this issue of Hino Torque. The new 300 Series is creating a lot of interest in the marketplace and is giving companies a compelling reason to upgrade their existing vehicles, and even just to re-enter the market. There’s no denying that the general economic outlook in the recent past has not been buoyant, and it’s true some (perhaps many) operators have postponed their normal turnover cycle. The all new Hino 300 Series is a win/win for everyone. It delivers many new and industry leading features at a value-for-money price – so much so that it is almost impossible not to consider it. It sets new standards in occupational health and safety, and that’s as important for an owner-operator as it is for a fleet. Take one feature: Vehicle Stability Control (VSC). The Hino 300 Series pioneers the introduction of VSC to the light-duty truck market. It can be a major contributor to a reduction in single vehicle truck crashes. That’s a big statement, but I know it to be true. Those who’ve experienced VSC are amazed by its extraordinary anticipation of loss of traction and impressed by its smooth reaction to maintain control. It is a driver aid like no other, and everyone who has driven with it remarks on how intuitive and non-intrusive it is while providing exceptional safety. One day VSC may be a feature in all light-duty trucks – but today it is available only on Hino’s all new 300 Series range, and that’s why responsible fleet managers must sample it. Hino has also led with the introduction of the first fully automatic transmission in the light-duty truck segment – and what an exceptional driver aid that is.

It’s not just about appealing to the rental market at the light end of the scale. Everyone who drives a truck, even the diehard manualshifters, will benefit from an automatic that lets the operator retain total vehicle control but with a minimum of fuss. It can make a huge contribution to reducing cabinfatigue. And then there’s hybrid. The new 300 Series has eight hybrid variants – each one a huge step up on the first generation hybrid we launched more than four years ago. Recent local testing has shown fuel savings consistently in excess of 20 per cent, without any compromise in operational performance. In fact, performance improves. Trials in Japan have revealed fuel savings around double this level. And that means operators can experience not only day-to-day operating efficiencies, but they can now anticipate a payback on purchase well within the average life of their truck. My view has always been that competition provides market stimulus, and that competition is the lifeblood of our economy. The new Hino 300 Series provides very real competition. It has so many positive features that it will absolutely improve the operational efficiency of its owners – and that will make them more competitive in their businesses. And it will spur market competition which has to, ultimately, be good for our customers. It’s a privilege to be involved in the launch of this milestone model series. I can say with confidence I look forward to seeing you in a Hino dealership soon. Steve Lotter President Hino Motor Sales Australia

HINO JOINS CONVOY FOR CAMP QUALITY North Queensland Convoy for Camp Quality 2011 was a huge success, raising more than $26,000 for cancer charity Camp Quality Townsville. Held on Sunday 14 August the convoy, made up of 153 trucks and 127 bikes, moved through the streets

of Townsville before finishing at the showgrounds for a family fun day. Local supplier of trucks, machinery, spare parts and service, Primemovers (NQ) was one of the major sponsors of the event. A total of 10 trucks were volunteered by Primemovers (NQ),

including three Hino 300 Series and one Hino 700 Series with trailer. “Primemovers NQ is very proud to be affiliated with the charity event,” said Greg O’Brien, Primemovers (NQ) dealer principal. “We donated a total of $7,000. This included a sponsorship figure

of $5,000 and the rest was raised through raffle ticket sales. “We also participated in advertising the event, with a live radio broadcast from our dealership through a local radio station. “The event boosts awareness of the charity throughout the community, and also gives all the kids and their families a great experience,” he said. Primemovers (NQ) plans to again help in the sponsorship and promotion of next year’s event. All funds raised for Camp Quality Townsville during the event are distributed throughout the local community to support children with cancer and their families during their difficult time.

DEALERS JOIN FORCES FOR AGQUIP Three Hino dealers joined forces to represent Hino Australia at AgQuip in August. Wideland Trucks in Tamworth, West Orange Motors and Mavin Hino in Kempsey backed Hino Australia’s strong support for the agricultural industry with their presence at Australia’s largest field day event. Held in Gunnedah in northern New South Wales, AgQuip claims to be one of the largest agri-industry shows in the world – usually attracting more than 100,000 people each year and hosting more than 3000 exhibitors. Hino displayed a number of 500 Series trucks, including with tilt tray and tipper, plus the new 300 Series

717 median and 616 automatic transmission models. Wideland Trucks sales manager Peter Grinter said there was considerable interest in the new 300 Series trucks and a fair bit of anticipation, especially around the comfort and features of the new range. “For example, the 300 Series range has improved cabin entry and exit with larger door apertures, wider opening doors, larger steps, increased foot and leg space, and even a collapsible gearshift lever. “Customers wanted to know more about the driving comfort features, such as new seats,

instruments, switches and remote central locking with integrated engine immobiliser,” he said. “Plus many customers are pleased to hear that all wide cab models now

have a driver’s suspension seat as standard equipment. “AgQuip was really worthwhile and we drew a lot of enquiries over the three days,” he said.

New GM for Australia’s oldest Hino Dealer CMI Hino Adelaide has appointed Chris Morrison as general manager following the retirement of Jim Reid. Mr Morrison has been with CMI Hino since 2005 and steps up from the sales manager role. “I have been in the automotive industry my entire life – starting out with Toyota and now Hino,” he said. 4 | Torque

“Being appointed general manager would have to be the highlight of my working life. It’s something I’ve been working towards for more than 23 years. “Jim worked very hard for over 25 years to get CMI Hino where it is today, and I aim to carry his legacy into the future. “He built up a strong base of employees – out of more than 40 staff many have been with the company for more than 20 years.”

Mr Morrison said one of the things he loves most about his new role is being able to interact with the staff and clients in all aspects of the business. The business aims to move 220 new Hino vehicles every year. CMI Hino Adelaide is the oldest Hino dealership in the country, operating for over 40 years. Long-time sales employee Ray Collins (24 years) as well as Frank Clarke (14 years) also left CMI Hino on the same day as Jim Reid at the end of June.

WA HINO ON SHOW WA Hino enjoyed a successful 2011 Perth Truck and Trailer Show in July, which was by far the most successful event in its history. Six Hino truck models from the 300, 500 and 700 Series ranges – including the new 300 Series crew cab model and a 700 Series SH and FY – were exhibited. This year’s edition of the biennial show at Perth’s Exhibition Centre

brought together industry and private buyers in a family friendly environment. The event attracted a record number of 155 exhibitors and 12,700 visitors over the three days of the show. The Perth Truck and Trailer Show is organised and operated by industry for industry, with the organising committee made up of the Motor Trade Association and the Commercial Vehicle Industry Association.

The goals for this year were to provide an environment for manufacturers and suppliers to showcase their products in a professional yet entertaining manner and to attract good numbers of potential customers to the show. The other priority was to provide quality social events to allow industry to network and enjoy themselves in the context of the popular Perth event. WA Hino sales manager Bruno Cirillo said the show provided the

most effective way of showcasing Hino products to the WA truck industry. “The standard and quality of exhibitor's stands and displays were second to none,” he said. “The show provides a broad platform for customers to get firsthand experience of WA Hino, and to compare our product against that of our competitors,” Mr Cirillo said. “There was a lot of interest in the new Series 300 trucks and we made the most of this opportunity to show customers what WA Hino has to offer.” Mr Cirillo said the high interest shown by patrons in the Hino product had already translated into a number of enquiries and sales.

Barry Maney celebrates 35 years Locally owned company the Barry Maney Group has celebrated 35 years in business. Operating in three locations in Mount Gambier with a team of more than 75 people, Barry Maney commenced business in July 1976 with a dedicated team of 20 employees. “Our initial promise was to support our valued clients with quality aftersales service and from day one we developed a committed Customer Care Culture, which we are proud to say is even stronger today,” Mr Maney said. He added that this success has been built on the back of hard work and the fostering of a supportive team culture.

The dealership also has a proud history of sound business ethics and supports many community causes. During 1988 the company added another prestige franchise when Barry Maney Sales was appointed Hino dealer for the Green Triangle Region, with well-known truck specialist Fred Hill joining the team as Hino sales manager. Freight Week a Runaway Success

Freight Week 2011 provided many opportunities for Hino Australia to highlight its features and benefits to a diverse audience. The event, which ran from 5–9 September at the Melbourne Park Function Centre, had over 1000 attendees and was hosted by the Victorian Transport Association and the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce. Hino had a new 300 Series Hybrid cab chassis on display outside the venue and it was the central theme in the indoor displays. There was an industry focus for each day of the week, and it was the safety, environment and technology days that attracted the most interest for Hino. Safety Day focused on how to implement cost-effective and measurable safety programs and brought participants up to date with new laws, programs and safety guidance relevant to the freight sector. Environment Day focused on current environmental issues around the carbon agenda and the policies 6 | Torque

that are emerging. These decisions will have a profound impact on how goods are moved around Australia and internationally. The key technologies that will improve productivity and safety as well as play a part in meeting the growing freight demand were summed up as part of Technology Day. Hino is well placed to address all these industry issues and provide costeffective, fuel-efficient solutions. After five very full days, Freight Week finished off in style with a focus on the national land freight strategy influencing national policy. Some of the highlights included discussions around roads, rail and seaports which are all experiencing enormous growth pressure while governments are struggling to find the money to continually invest. On the final day presenters examined a more collaborative national approach, with industry case studies and

presentations from senior policy makers such as the NTC, Infrastructure Australia and the Victorian Department of Transport.

New Thinking for

Hino and AFAC

“New World, New Thinking” was the catchcry of the latest Australian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council (AFAC) and Bushfire CRC annual conference held at Sydney’s Darling Harbour in August. Hino Australia displayed a Victorian State Emergency Service heavy rescue truck based on a Euro 5 Hino 500 Series FD 1024 crew chassis. The truck on display was one of 28 FD 1024 crews delivered to the Victorian SES in the past two years and represents the latest technology from Hino. The specialist rescue body was manufactured by Varley, which in itself attracted many interested delegates to the Hino stand. “Being involved at the AFAC Conference was invaluable for Hino as it provides a fantastic opportunity to meet and talk with major customers and key industry suppliers,” Hino Australia national government sales manager Tom Ayrton said.

The eighth annual conference has grown to be the pre-eminent event for the fire and emergency service sector in Australasia. With more than 100 exhibitors spread over 7000 square metres of floor space, it was the largest trade expo for the sector in the southern hemisphere this year. More than 1,200 delegates attended from around the world, with keynote speakers from Europe, the UK and the US. AFAC CEO Naomi Brown said the event has gone from strength to strength. “I think our theme is critical for where emergency services are placed at this point in time,” she said. “We are all facing significant changes in technology and government and community expectations. How we plan, respond to and manage fire and natural hazards and disasters in the future must take this into account, making sure we continue to build capacity and capability across our sector.”

HINO LAUNCHES NEXT-GENERATION 300 SERIES Hino’s new light duty truck sets the benchmark in safety, performance, efficiency and comfort

8 | Torque

Hino has launched its all new 300 Series light-duty truck on the Australian market, redefining the light-duty truck market with a number of advanced safety, performance, efficiency and comfort features. The four key areas of safety, performance, efficiency and comfort were the focus of the design and engineering effort for the new Hino 300 Series, which featured record levels of Australian development input. As a result it offers the best in improved driveability, aerodynamics, vision, cabin ergonomics, comfort and convenience, ease of maintenance and vehicle safety. Hino Australia divisional manager, product strategy, marketing and dealer development, Alex Stewart, said the new Hino 300 Series has an impressive list of both active and passive safety features. “All models have dual SRS airbags, four-wheel ventilated disc brakes incorporating ABS braking, electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and, in an Australia first for a light-duty truck, vehicle stability control (VSC).” Available from launch are eight dedicated hybrid models, an

expansion on the previous series’ two hybrid variants. The new Hino 300 Series Hybrid’s driveline has been significantly refined, and now features an advanced five-speed automated manual transmission (AMT). Mr Stewart said local government buyers especially were showing increasing interest in the hybrid models.

cleanest available in the market. All wide cab models have a sixspeed transmission in either manual or automatic, with the automatic transmission now available on a greater range of models – making Hino the only Japanese truck manufacturer to offer a full automatic transmission in the light-duty market. All manual models have Hino’s ES

headlamps on wide cab models are available as an optional fitment and fitted as standard equipment on Hino Hybrid. The cabin interior has been completely redesigned for improved convenience, storage and driving comfort, including new seats, instruments, switches, audio systems and remote central locking for all

”Hino has responded to the increased demand for hybrid light-duty trucks by quadrupling the number of hybrid variants in the 300 series” “Hino has responded to the increased demand for hybrid light-duty trucks by quadrupling the number of hybrid variants in the 300 series,” he said. “Hybrid buyers now have greater choice, with variants available right through to 8500kg GVM rating.” The new, more fuel-efficient diesel-only range has a class-leading combination of power and torque, with up to 121kW of power and 464Nm of torque from its ADR80/03 Euro 5-compliant diesel engine. The exhaust emissions also easily meet the EEV (Enhanced Environmental Vehicle) benchmark, regarded as the

(Easy Start) hill-start assist. Mr Stewart said the Hino 300 Series has a new exterior design that offers class-leading aerodynamics for improved fuel economy. “The new wide cab model’s coefficient of drag is significantly better than that of its major competitors,” he said. “Driver vision has been improved, with new multi-position electric controlled and heated main and spotter mirrors, and slim A-pillars that greatly reduce forward blind spots.” In another light-duty truck safety first, high-intensity discharge (HID)

doors (including the rear doors on crew cab), and an integrated engine immobiliser. All models have factory-fitted Denso air conditioning while crew cab models have an additional rear airconditioner unit. Medium, long and extra-long wheelbase wide cab models have an increased driving range, thanks to a new 70-litre sub-tank giving a total fuel capacity of 170 litres. The new Hino 300 Series is now available to Australian customers, following its official launch in September.

New Hino 300 Series Hybrid Launched Hino has completely redesigned its hybrid system for increased performance, improved fuel efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. It has a Hino M550 sequentialshift five-speed automated manual transmission for easy, two-pedal operation (the previous model had the choice of manual or fully automatic transmission). Hino Australia product planning manager Daniel Petrovski said the new hybrid model offered drivers the choice of driving the truck in ‘D’ range as an automatic, or ‘S’ range with sequential shifting.

10 | Torque

“Initial testing has shown the new hybrid range can offer fuel savings, depending on the operation, of consistently in excess of 20 per cent or better when compared with a conventional diesel truck,” he said. Trials in Japan have demonstrated fuel savings around double this level. The new-generation hybrid model’s Hino N04C-UR 4.0-litre diesel engine and combined electric-drive motor have 10 per cent more power and 19 per cent more torque (both at lower rpm) than the previous model. The diesel engine delivers 110kW of power and 420Nm of torque. The new AC Synchronous motor has 36kW

of power and 333Nm of torque. Mr Petrovski said the new Hino Hybrid could be driven in electricdrive-only EV mode in stop-start traffic, depending on the level of battery charge. “The layout of the major components – engine, clutch, electric motor and transmission – has been changed, to save on diesel fuel and hence reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” he said. “The automated clutch can now separate the diesel engine and electric motor; in the previous model it was between the electric motor and transmission.

“The electrical components – including the motor, inverter and nickel-metal hydride battery – have been completely redesigned to reduce weight and size, and therefore increase efficiency.” The 40-module (240 cells) 288V hybrid battery has been proven in the Lexus RX450h luxury SUV. Mr Petrovski said the new Hino parallel hybrid system will offer significant savings in fuel and greenhouse gas emissions in all areas of operation. “It complements the high efficiency of the Hino diesel engine, has a low impact on payload capacity, and offers outstanding durability and driving performance,” he said. “It does not use diesel power to create electricity and the diesel engine returns to idle whenever it is not required to power the truck, thereby saving more fuel.”

Customers and hino staff preview new 300 at mt cotton Australia continues to play a significant part in the global roll-out of the new 300 Series, playing host to senior members of Hino’s Japanese management team at a drive and training program in October. The week-long event, held at the Mount Cotton Training Centre (on

Queensland’s Gold Coast hinterland), was attended by customers, Hino managers, dealer principals and their sales staff and a number of Japanese dignitaries. The Mount Cotton program was enthusiastically received by members of the Hino dealer network, following

the successful launch of the new 300 Series to Australian media in late September. Over the five days dealers and sales staff were given the opportunity to experience the new 300 series (and other Hino trucks), as well as receive training on the features of the new model.

Customers were also given the opportunity to attend the Mount Cotton event, where they were able to spend time behind the wheel of the new model and experience practical demonstrations of its enhanced safety features, like vehicle stability control (VSC) and hill-start assist.

New Hino 300 Series applauded by local media Hino’s new 300 Series was officially launched to Australian media at the end of September. Specialist trucking media were invited to the two-day official National Media Launch of the New 300 series, with each given the opportunity to spend several hundred kilometres behind the wheel of the different model variants. The launch program also featured a comprehensive technical and market briefing, officiated by Hino Motor Sales Australia chairman Ken Sekine and president Steve Lotter. Brisbane-based Hino dealer Sci-

Fleet Hino, which was significantly impacted during January’s disastrous floods, provided its recently refurbished presentation rooms to showcase the event. Journalists from around the country spent two days testing a number of new 300 Series variants (including standard, wide and crew-cab with either diesel or hybrid drivetrains) over a purpose-set drive program through southern Queensland. As the second market outside Japan to receive the new 300 Series, Hino Australia continues to play a significant role in the global launch of the new model range. Media endorsement of the new 300 Series was positive; with a number of journalists commenting on the new 300’s enhanced driving experience, safer handling, strong performance and significantly quieter cabin. The National Media Launch is the first component of Hino’s wider 300 Series launch strategy, which includes a number of advertising campaigns as well as localised marketing activities in each of the respective sales regions nationwide. Hino Australia has teamed up with waste collection machinery expert MacDonald Johnston to develop a revolutionary new urban waste collection truck based around the Hino 300 Hybrid. The ‘UrBin’ (or Universal Rear Loading Binlifter) Hino Hybrid Rear Loader has been specifically designed as a low-impact refuse collection vehicle for use in built-up urban areas

– particularly parks and gardens where truck noise may be an issue. MacDonald Johnston managing director David Waldron said the industryfirst UrBin Hino Hybrid Rear Loader was the ideal machine to satisfy the needs of inner-city councils and private contractors who are aiming to reduce their environmental footprint. “Many Rear Loaders operate day to day within park and garden

areas where noise and CO2 pollution can be a major issue,” he said. “Rear Loaders operating in these environments spend much of the day stationary or moving very slowly, which is where the hybrid system becomes most beneficial.” Hino Australia president Steve Lotter said the Hino 300 Series diesel-electric hybrid chassis is of real benefit to the Australian waste industry. “Combined with a significant reduction in nitrous oxide (NOx) and carbon dioxide emissions, the UrBin Hino Hybrid Rear Loader lessens overall operating costs, and ultimately the impact on the environment.” Developed around Hino’s 714 model 300 Series diesel-electric hybrid truck, the MacDonald Johnston UrBin body utilises a number of unique features. It can be configured to handle several types of

common waste receptacles, covering conventional waste, green waste and recyclable goods. It can also be built to suit the specific needs of customers depending on their requirements. Mr Lotter said it was pleasing to see Australian industry working to develop sustainable solutions for the trucking industry. “Hino’s pioneering hybrid technology has proven to be an effective and affordable solution to fuel economy and emissions issues for several major Australian customers. “More than 162 Hino Hybrid trucks are now in service in Australia, and an all-new model range is being launched later this year. “By working with body builders like MacDonald Johnston we’re able to tailor the needs of this truck to suit the customer, bringing real environmental benefit at a price customers can afford,” he said.

The first Hino 700 Series SH truck has been sold to a transport company in Western Australia. The new SH 2045 4x2 AMT Air Single Drive Prime Mover was received by WA company Keeler Transport in May. Keeler Transport is a subcontractor of Stratco Industries, Australian producers of building and home improvement products. Helping to make light work of heavy building materials, an Effer 130 crane has been fitted behind the cab to take care of lifting heavy cargo on and off the tray. Tim Keeler, co-owner of Keeler Transport, has been familiar with the

Hino brand for more than 10 years, and the new SH 2045 will join three other Hino trucks on Keeler Transport’s fleet. “My dad Rob bought his first Hino about 12 years ago for our business, and we’ve never looked back,” Mr Keeler said. “We’ve bought and sold many Hino vehicles over the years, all proving to be very valuable assets to our familyowned business. “We always liked the 700 Series. Originally when we were looking for a new Hino we thought we’d have to modify an SS model to single drive, but Mark Webster from WA Hino informed us of the SH 2045 with the

automated transmission, and I was sold. “WA Hino has been great throughout the entire purchase process. If I ever have any questions I just give them a call and they sort them out,” he said. The SH 2045 bought by Keeler Transport is the stand-out model in the range, featuring 331kW of power and 2157Nm of torque. “We carry things like fencing, rain water goods, sheds, roofing and patios, servicing everyone from handymen to the industrial and mining industries,” Mr Keeler said. “On the road the SH is fantastic. It drives great and feels like other

Hino trucks I’ve driven; everything is familiar. “The truck gets lots of looks, too. People are always commenting on it.” The SH 2045 is equipped with high levels of active and passive safety. Standard features include fourwheel ventilated disc brakes with electronic braking control (EBS), the ABS anti-lock brake system, and Frontal Underrun Protection (FUP). The SH 2045 also features Hino’s Anti-slip regulator (ASR), vehicle stability control and Hino’s four-bag cabin air suspension with remote levelling, helping to reduce fatigue and increase driver comfort. TRUCKING WINS TWO-YEAR EXEMPTION

Hino Australia and the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) have welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to exempt the trucking industry from a carbon tax until 1 July 2014. In contrast, many off-road users of fuel, including the mining, rail and aviation industries, will be subject to carbon tax from 1 July 2012. ATA chairman David Simon said the government’s decision would give small trucking businesses some breathing space to increase their fuel efficiency and renegotiate contracts with their customers. “In the lead-up to the announcement the ATA argued 14 | Torque

“85 per cent of trucking businesses have fewer than five employees and a limited ability to pass on increases in their costs” strongly that trucking operators should be exempt from the carbon tax altogether,” Mr Simon said. “In a series of meetings, including one with Minister Combet’s senior staff, we pointed out that 85 per cent of trucking businesses have fewer than five employees and a limited ability to pass on increases in their costs. “We pointed out that the industry has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 35 per cent per billion

tonne kilometres since 1990, as well as massively reducing its other emissions. This has cost the industry hundreds of millions of dollars. “And we pointed out that business conditions for trucking operators were extremely tough. “The ATA didn’t win outright, but we did secure a two-year exemption from the tax for the industry. “We also hope customers will talk to us, and with our range of fuel-efficient

trucks we can work together and help provide solutions,” Mr Simon said. Hino Australia president Steve Lotter said the company was pleased the government had given trucking operators time to renegotiate long-term contracts with their customers and look at ways to improve fuel efficiency. On 1 July 2014, the effective fuel tax paid by trucking operators will increase by 6.858 cents per litre, matching the planned 2014–15 carbon price of $25.40 per tonne. This is expected to cost the industry and its customers $510 million in 2014–15 alone. The industry’s effective fuel tax will then vary every six months as Australia’s carbon price changes.

3M and Hino

work towards better visibility Hino Australia supported a 3M safety demonstration held over two nights in Sydney to highlight the benefits of 3M Diamond Grade Reflective Tapes, which are delivering highly cost-effective safety improvements for truck owners. Two Hino 700 Series prime movers and a 13-metre semi-trailer were fitted with the 3M Reflective Tape for the demonstration held at Honda’s driver training facility in St Ives on 29–30 June. Federal, state and local government representatives, transport executives, safety personnel, and both emergency and private fleet owners attended. Hino Australia divisional manager Alex Stewart and national government sales manager Tom Ayrton said they

were pleased to work with 3M on this safety initiative. The use of partial or full contour reflective markings will be mandatory on all heavy vehicles in the European Union effective from October under changes to the UN/ ECE104 regulation. A leading university study in Germany found that more than 95 per cent of night time accidents from the rear or side of a truck could be reduced by using outline vehicle visibility markings1. A truck with outline reflective markings is recognised earlier than an unmarked truck because they help to define the total size of the truck for drivers. This gives other drivers more time to manoeuvre safely in traffic2.

It has also been proven that a truck which is retrofitted with outline reflective markings can reduce rearend collisions by up to 41 per cent and side collisions by up to 37 per cent3. The average financial loss per truck incident (vehicle damage and repair costs only) for fleet owners in Australia is close to $128,480*, not taking into account the significant emotional trauma and devastation that accidents can have on families and loved ones. 3M Diamond Grade 983 and 987 Series Reflective Tapes are used worldwide for truck markings. They deliver outstanding truck visibility and continuous protection 24 hours a day, especially when trucks or trailers are parked on the side of the road.

3M senior product manager Cade Turner said the night time demonstrations had been very effective because they gave decisionmakers a hands-on opportunity to really test the visibility for themselves. He said the 3M Diamond Grade Tape is also quick and easy to apply, offering a cost-effective safety solution. Prof. Dr.-Ing. H.-J. Training for Apprentices

A new Hino training program based on the Euro 5 models introduced earlier this year was rolled out in July for new apprentices and technicians. The Hino Apprentice and Technician Induction Program is aimed at all apprentices and technicians that are unfamiliar with the Hino product. Participants are introduced to key Hino milestones and the complete product range available in Australia, including identifying and explaining the technical features and characteristics of each Hino model. The training program also stipulates the correct techniques and workshop practices to ensure diagnostics and repair work is performed to the highest Hino standard. “The goal is to provide apprentices and service technicians with instructions and practical experience to enable them to perform routine service, maintenance 16 | Torque

“The goal is to provide apprentices and

service technicians with instructions and practical experience to enable them to perform routine service, maintenance and diagnostic operations” and diagnostic operations, as specified by Hino in conjunction with the retail network,” said Hino technical training manager, Sergio Bonvini. “A lot is covered in this three-day program, from basics such as learning to select the correct fluids and lubricants, understanding all Hino service literature, being familiar with vehicle and major components and understanding Hino’s Technical Assistance helpline. “We also ensure that participants are aware of the Hino dealer network service and part support and the value of teamwork. We stress the importance of exceeding customer expectations at all times.

“This type of program is run twice a year, and depending on dealer demand,

Hino will run further training sessions as requested. “Nine people attended the first program for the new Euro 5 vehicles. “This course is a good example of Hino’s commitment to its dealership network and customers,” Mr Bonvini said.

The Sherrin Group has grown to become one of Hino’s biggest customers, with more than 100 of the company’s trucks in its Sherrin Rentals fleet. From elevated work platforms, to pole borers and water trucks, the Sherrin Group relies on Hino trucks to supply a variety of companies with any number of solutions. Sherrin is primarily comprised of two companies: Sherrin Rentals and Sherrin Equipment. Sherrin Rentals specialises in renting earthmoving equipment and elevated work platforms, pole borers and water trucks – supplying large infrastructure, maintenance and construction projects throughout Australia. While Hino hasn’t turned its engineering prowess to earthmoving equipment, this sector still has considerable use for trucks. The Hino 500 is used as the basis for a number of applications, such as water trucks, elevated work platforms and pole borers.

Sherrin Equipment is the manufacturing, importing, sales and service arm of the group, focusing mostly on elevated work platforms, pole borers, water trucks and service vehicles. All of these applications can be fitted to the cab chassis of the customer’s choice, or Sherrin Equipment will provide a complete product – as it does for its sister company Sherrin Rentals. “Our customers rely on us to have the answer for them,” said Steven Goulding, Sherrin Equipment general manager. “They need to be able to trust us. “Most of the elevated work platforms we build are supplied to the electricity and utilities industries – companies such as Western Power, Thiess Services and Transfield Services have all relied on us for trucks. “We build and import approximately 80 to 100 units each year, and virtually all of the fully completed units we have sold over a long period of time are mounted on Hinos. “We’ve developed a strong relationship with Hino – we get units

direct from the Hino factory via our local dealer Sci-Fleet Hino, which saves us valuable time in the manufacturing process, and we use Hino dealers to exclusively service the trucks. “The company switched to a predominantly Hino fleet about 18 months ago. “We use the Hino 500 FD, FG, FM and GT models for our applications. “The fact that we use Hinos as the basis for the trucks that we sell to our own sister company speaks volumes for what we think of the product. “The 500 Series represents good value for money, servicing through the Hino network is easy, parts are easy to access and, above all, they are a very reliable truck. “As you can imagine, rental trucks aren’t often treated with the greatest of care – working in remote and rugged locations for long hours under maximum loads – so we need a very reliable truck for the Sherrin Rentals side of the group. “We’ve found that the Hino is consistently a very reliable truck.” Torque | 17

Best in Fleet A Hino truck supplied by CMI Hino Adelaide has transformed into arguably one of the most unique purpose-built service vehicles in Australia The brainchild of Liquip International and Transfield Services, the tanker was developed to transport chemicals used to clean and maintain gas lines to Moomba, South Australia. Sean Holt, Transfield services category manger for asset procurement, said building a rig that can carry up to 10,000 litres of chemicals into outback Australia was not an easy task. “We had to replace the existing truck and its pumping system, which was fairly rudimentary, and come up with an all-new design that would improve efficiency. “First up we selected the Hino 700 Series SS2848, and then decided on a suitable tank. The final product was eight months in the making – four months planning, and four months constructing,” Mr Holt said. The 10,000-litre, full stainless steel, Marshall Lethlean tank features five 18 | Torque

compartments: two hold diesel, two hold a corrosion inhibitor, with the final compartment holding water. Liquip International, specialists in bulk liquid handling, was responsible for fitting up the intricate piping system – used to pump the chemical liquids from the individual tanks into the gas lines. The new truck is equipped with a variable-speed pumping system (see below), capable of dispensing either high or low pressure liquid transfers, and is able to complete a more diverse

range of tasks than its predecessor. The Hino’s pressurised pumping systems operate off the truck’s existing hydraulic and air system. However, an additional auxiliary air tank was installed to make sure the factory-fitted air brakes would not be compromised. Thanks to in-depth schematics, the new Hino’s weight is evenly distributed over the front and rear axles. A HAZOP (hazard analysis and operability study) played a crucial role in ensuring the truck’s operating effectiveness and safety. The truck is expected to travel around 20–30,000 kilometres per year, to and from numerous remote worksites. Featuring upgraded air suspension, the truck is equipped to deal with unsealed roads.

Front under run protection compliance gives the truck an extra 0.5-tonne of payload over the front axle. The air suspension allows the truck to carry one tonne of extra payload overall. The truck is kitted with fresh water supplies, first aid kit, fridge, blankets and other survival items should operators find themselves stuck in remote locations. “This Hino is the most unique workhorse in our 2500-strong nationwide fleet. The overall operating efficiency is just phenomenal,” Mr Holt said. “All the hard work was in the detailed scoping and preparation. Now that we have the plans, we’ll be one step ahead if we have to fabricate another.” Transfield Services delivers essential services to key industries in the resource and energy, infrastructure services, and property and facilities management sectors.
