Back to the Future Week of Giving Annual Scholarship Event & Commemorative Journal May 2-6, 2021

May 2-6, 2021

Dear Hillel School families and Community Members, This last year has been a time like no other. It has been so profoundly complex and layered, at times feeling like a DeLorean ride through space and time that we might not have expected. Our school had to shutter our physical doors last Spring. Still, we almost seamlessly pivoted to reaching and teaching our children virtually in an online Hillel University space that we created. Over the summer, we shifted from that entirely virtual space to a NYS mandate-driven plan that allowed us to safely reopen our school’s doors for five-day-a-week, in-person, and concurrent virtual instruction. It has not been easy and without our fair share of twists and turns. However, our faculty, staff, students, and families have persevered and come out of this stronger and more determined than ever.

Welcome Back to School! Meet Your 2018-19 Faculty & Staff!

That brings me- Head to thisof year’s Scholarship Gala and our theme, “Back to the Future.” Without our past faculty, Tracie Glazer School staff, and students, we would not be where we are. Without that rich history, we would not be heading in the future-thinking direction that we are today. This year we have chosen to honor our past while asking our alumni and supporters to join in building a bright future ahead.

It is a great pleasure to welcome your family to the 2018-19 school year. Dear Hillel School Students, Ma Nishtana hashana hazeh, why is this YEAR different from all others? This could very easily be one of the many questions asked about this year at Hillel Community Day School. At the beginning of the year we were all faced with so much uncertainty about what this year would bring. But just like the Haggadah provides answers and a clear path forward as a peoplehood, the students, the staff, and the community of Hillel Community Day School provided us with a clear path forward for the successful year we just completed. What we have accomplished as a community is nothing shy of a miracle. Keeping the doors open for in person learning is a feather in the cap for Hillel, Kindergarten to 8th grade and everybody in-between. I understand this hasn’t been easy, and it was you, the students and teachers, who really did all the hard work following the guidelines to keep our community strong. We managed not to skip a beat and still have a fun filled year with the majority of the programming and learning that would have taken place under more normal circumstances. I would also like to thank Mrs. Glazer, Mr. Hoornbeck, the faculty and staff for truly stepping up to the challenge and forging a path through the unknown. Your dedication to the students, the school, and the community is a bright light we can all look toward. You all have truly made an impactful difference in the lives of your students and their families. I am wishing you all a fun and restful summer. I cannot wait to see you all back next year. Mr. Arie Schochat Chairman of the Hillel School Board of Trustees

May 2, 2021 Tracie Glazer, Head of School Hillel Community Day School 191 Fairfield Drive Rochester, NY 14620 Dear Ms. Glazer: Hillel Community Day School is an indisputable asset to the Town of Brighton, and I have personally enjoyed my ongoing relationship with you and the school community. It is with great pleasure then, that I join you in recognizing HCDS alumni on the occasion of your Back to the Future annual fundraiser. Mazel tov! We have all had a very challenging year due to the COVID – 19 pandemic, and HCDS, like all schools across the nation, worked hard to establish and maintain safety protocols to keep their learning community healthy. Unlike most schools, however, HCDS has managed to provide consistent in-person learning for all students, which is a testament to the quality of the leadership team, faculty and staff, as well as families’ willingness to adapt and embrace change. As a result, HCDS families were spared the often difficult task of overseeing online learning and the children were able to experience nearly-normal living by benefiting from classroom learning each day and enjoying the camaraderie of friends. It is fitting that HCDS honor their alumni and the past generations who made the school what it is today, because your tradition of valuing and supporting relationships throughout the school is what helped make your year so safe and successful. May we meet in-person for this fundraiser next year! Sincerely,

William W. Moehle Town Supervisor

Every so often the world gifts us with someone who can truly be described as extraordinary. Someone who has seemingly boundless vision to imagine what might be possible. Someone with unstoppable drive and endless creative energy. Someone who is truly and deeply passionate, who inspires and ignites the passions of others. Someone who believes that the impossible is not impossible, and then proves the point. Again and again. Day after day. At HCDS, that someone is Mrs. Tracie Glazer.

Abe Glazer

“I really appreciated being a student at Hillel as I was able to take part in such a diverse curriculum,” Dr. Abe Glazer reflects. “I remember doing a play in 4th grade about colonial America where I got my first singing solo as John Alden singing with Priscilla. I loved studying Chumash with Rabbi Hisiger, and appreciated being able to work at my own pace with Mrs. Regalman in math.” Dr. Glazer is currently married to the principal of Hillel Community Day School, and they have two children. Raizel will be graduating this year, and Gideon is completing 6th grade. He is the managing partner of a large private practice urology group in Rochester, and is Vice President of Temple Beth El.

In honor of my children, Jill Friedman Rosen, Class of 1979; and Marty Friedman, Class of 1981. Hillel School prepared them very well for the academic road ahead.

Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to our school and community! This is a truly deserved honor. “This year’s Women of Excellence recipients are a dynamic group of leaders. They define success through hard work, professional accomplishments and a commitment to making the Rochester community the best place to live and work,” said Suzanne Fischer-Huettner, group publisher of the Rochester Business Journal. “They believe in elevating women and sharing their experiences with the next generation of leaders, and the Rochester Business Journal is honored to recognize them.” 18

Elana Pogal

One thing that Elana Pogal remembers fondly from Hillel School is how well the teachers knew their students and how they used that knowledge to tailor lessons and activities to the students’ interests and personalities. “I had a math teacher who knew that one of my classmaets and I were competitive about our grades so she would write both of our grades on each other’s tests! Our scores were usually within a point of each other, and we competed for the entire school year to see who could ‘beat’ each other on more tests. I think I won 😉.” Elana graduated from Binghamton University in 2019 and currently works at the Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester, where she is the Scholarship and Grants Manager. This summer, she will begin graduate studies at the Hornstein Jewish Professional Leadership Program at Brandeis University, pursuing a master’s degree in Jewish Professional Leadership. “I hope,” she says, “to continue my career in the Jewish nonprofit world.”

Max Krieger

“Hillel School was my first opportunity to discover my roots. It helped pave the way for me to remain connected to Jewish values and experiences,” remembers Max Krieger. “The best experience I had at Hillel was playing basketball for the school and having my father as the coach. This was a great way for me to practice many of the Hillel values in an athletic setting. Even to this day, players from different Hillel basketball teams debate which team was Hillel’s best!” Today, Max is a teacher and a basketball and tennis coach in Rochester. Prior to Covid, he spent the past 15 summers as a staff member at the Rochester JCC’s Camp Seneca Lake. In his free time he enjoys “being active and playing sports,” and “many times the people I end up playing with are friends and teammates” from his time at Hillel School. Two summers ago he travelled to Israel for the first time. “It was a great opportunity to explore such an important part of my Jewish identity,” he notes, and to make connections between what he saw and “things I learned years and years ago at Hillel.”

Thank you Hillel School for all you do. May the generations of Torah Education that we celebrate give blessing to a future of continued Jewish pride, heritage, and Simchas.

Michael Freeling

Two teachers stand out for Michael Freeling as he thinks about his time at Hillel School. “Rabbi Chaim Hisiger made learning Torah a lot of fun, as he was very animated and had great nicknames for everyone. On the first day I met him, he mispronounced my last name as ‘Wheeling’ instead of ‘Freeling’ and that turned into ‘Wheels’ and stuck.” He also remembers Kathleen Williams, who “was very encouraging in opening my eyes to current events around the world.” Currently, Michael is a real estate attorney and partner in the firm of Bloom & Freeling in Boca Raton, Florida. He is also a National Commissioner of the ADL and on the Executive Committee of ADL Florida. He has chaired the ADL Florida Law Enforcement Committee to combat hate and bias, and has “spearheaded partnerships between ADL Florida and the Miami Dolphins Football Unites Program to bring people of all different backgrounds and cultures together.” He also worked to form an international partnership between the ADL and his fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi, to educate students on college campuses and to support them in standing up against antisemitism and supporting Israel.

Miriam Yudelson Katz remembers first attending Hillel School at B’rith Kodesh and then moving to the (current) building on Fairfield Drive. “I am eternally grateful for the excellent education I received at Hillel School,” she shares. “I was given a true foundation for life, in academics, Judaics, and life skills. Whether it was Mrs. Williams teaching us to write colorful, impactful sentences, Mrs. Fuchs attempting to teach us dikduk, Rabbi Pearlman’s love of Navi and Jewish history, or Mrs. Cresov who nurtured my love of art and gave me a professional path to pursue, the love, caring, and education of my Hillel School teachers has stayed with me throughout my life.” She also values the community she found at Hillel School, noting that she continues to connect with her classmates and those ahead of and behind her at Hillel. “I know that my Hillel School chevra will always share my memories and care about me.” Currently, Miriam works as the Collection Manager for the Getty Museum’s Department of Photographs in Los Angeles, where she is responsible for the care, storage, and cataloging of about 145,000 photographic works of art. She is also a divorce coach, “helping people navigate the journey of divorce through personalized support, strategies and guidance.” She has four daughters, one of whom is currently a student at the University of Rochester.

Rachel Scheier Kaplan

“I have so many fond memories of Hillel School,” Rachel Kaplan reflects. “In fact, my four best friends, who I talk to daily, are from my days at Hillel School.” She fondly remembers the projects they did for the Torah Fair, in which the class did in depth research on a topic and then created a project based on what they learned. In 6th grade, they made the clothing of the Cohen Gadol (which their teacher wore for Purim!), in 7th grade they build a replica of the Beit HaMikdash, and in 8th grade they learned about King David’s throne. Currently, Rachel is the Executive Director for Cincinnati Hillel. “I have been working in the Hillel world since 2009,” Rachel shares, “and my commitment to the Jewish people, to building the next generation of Jewish leadership, and to experiential Jewish education all come from my time at Hillel School.”

Sheri Gross

When you ask Sheri Gross for a favorite memory from Hillel School, she has a hard time narrowing it down. “I LOVED Hillel School. I absolutely loved my teachers, and I had an amazing class – in fact our graduating class of 10 students had a couple of zoom reunions during Covid, and some of us have been in touch regularly all our lives. Hillel and my Jewish education there really helped inform who I am, and led to my decision to make Day School a priority for my own children.” One highlight for her was the 8th grade trip to New York City. “We were the first class to go somewhere besides Toronto, and we really worked hard to make it happen. We had an AMAZING time!” Sheri currently lives in Cleveland, Ohio, with her husband and three children. She spent 21 years as the Director of the Playmakers Youth Theatre and Performing Arts Camp at the JCC in Cleveland, and for the past five years she has been the Director of Creative Programming at Gross Schechter Day School. She is also the director of Testimony Theater, “a program that connects teens with Holocaust survivors in order to document and dramatize their stories,” and Zamir Choir, “a 1st-6th grade children’s choir that leads Kabbalat Shabbat services at Congregation B’nai Jeshurun one Friday evening a month.”
