HONOREES IBBY & SAMMY SCHULMAN
Ibby and Sammy Schulman are a dynamic couple with established roots in South Florida. Both Ibby and Sammy have served in many leadership roles in the Jewish philanthropic community. They have a strong commitment to Jewish life and ensuring L’dor v’dor – from generation to generation. Ibby and Sammy have traveled on Federation missions to Israel and participated in the Adult March of the Living program with Broward County. They are co-chairs for JCC Maccabi Games 2021 to be hosted by David Posnack JCC. Having grown up in South Florida, Ibby received her MSW from Barry University. Ibby was the Director of Social Work for St. Francis Hospital. While raising her children with Sammy, Ibby applied her great sense of style to working in the jewelry business. Ibby’s first venture into Jewish life was with National Council of Jewish Women and Hadassah in Hollywood. Once introduced to Jewish Federation of Broward County many years ago, Ibby quickly became active and is a proud Lion of Judah, trustee of Jewish Women’s Foundation and active board member of Women’s Philanthropy. In 2015, Ibby was recognized by Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County for her service with Jewish Federation, JAFCO & Kids in Distress. Equally busy in Jewish life, Sammy is a past board chair of Jewish Federation of Broward County, Annual Campaign Chair, chair of the Community Campaign Celebration, Men’s Nite Out and Major Gifts Gala. Sammy also has volunteered his time on the basketball court as a JCC Maccabi coach and served as the basketball commissioner for the Ft. Lauderdale Games hosted by the Posnack JCC in 2015. Sammy is the Executive Vice President, Business Operations/Chief Financial Officer for the Miami HEAT and AmericanAirlines Arena (The HEAT Group). As one of the HEAT’s original employees, Sammy has been with the team for over 32 years. They are the proud parents to adult children, twin daughters Brittany and Amanda, and son Benjamin. The Schulman family is members of B’nai Aviv in Weston. Ibby and Sam are strong supporters of Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach, regularly attending our Hillel 954 event. We are thrilled to honor the amazing team of Ibby and Sammy Schulman.
SPECIAL RECOGNITION STATE SENATOR LAUREN BOOK Senator Lauren Book, M.S. Ed, is an internationally respected child safety expert and former classroom teacher fighting for Florida’s families. She represents the Broward County-based District 32 in the Florida Senate. Senator Book is the Chair of the Committee on Children, Families, and Elder Affairs, and serves on committees including: Appropriations, Appropriations Subcommittees on Education and Health and Human Services, Health Policy, Rules, and the Joint Legislative Budget Commission. Following her advocacy in the wake of the Parkland massacre, Senator Book was appointed to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Commission. Senator Book also serves on the Board of Directors for the Statewide Council on Human Trafficking Direct Support Organization and fought a multi-year battle resulting in the successful passage of legislation to support survivors and prevent trafficking by curbing demand. The Senator also serves as a member of the Florida Children and Youth Cabinet. In her capacity as Founder and CEO of Florida-based nonprofit Lauren’s Kids, Book works tirelessly to prevent child sexual abuse and help survivors heal. Senator Book, one of only four Jewish members of the Florida State Senate, has successfully sponsored legislation to combat anti-semitism in our schools and since taking office, has helped secure millions of dollars for Holocaust Education, kosher meal programs for the frail elderly, Space Florida- Israel Innovation Authority joint R&D, Enterprise Florida Israel Office, and enhanced security for Jewish day schools. Senator Book traveled to Israel with the Governor last year and met with top Israeli officials and companies on expanding the Florida-Israel relationship. Back home, she has worked with the Goodman Jewish Family Service of Broward County and was awarded their Ending Abuse Award in 2017. Senator Book’s work on behalf of the Jewish community in Florida is inspiring and shows what a difference an elected official can make for our community and for the entire state. Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach is proud to recognize Senator Book for making a difference in so many people’s lives.

A NOTE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR This year when we ask “How is this night different from other nights?” we will all have new commentary and stories to share from these past few weeks. Passover at Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach will be different this year as well. Coming to grips with the reality of an unprecedented communal moment has come with particularly painful sacrifices for our students that continue to sink in: our in-person interaction with students has come to an abrupt halt, our students who planned to travel with us to Israel this summer must reschedule, and our seniors’ final semester will look very different than they ever imagined. While at Hillel, we too must come to accept the realities we now face as it simply isn’t in our DNA to stand still. In response to this challenging moment our Hillel is transcending limitations, and has already become “Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach Without Walls,” an interactive online presence dedicated to maintaining our thriving Jewish community until we can meet in person again. I know we’re all coping with much change and uncertainty. Our spring now looks quite different than we expected, but our commitment to our students is eternal. Your generous financial support is helping ensure that, both now and when our students return to campus, Hillel will always be here for them.
