Education

How to Keep Kids Entertained All Summer Long Summer vacation often starts with high expectations. Children are excited about the prospect of fun days outdoors playing with friends, while parents anxiously await relaxing months without the responsibilities of school and extracurricular clubs. But once summer vacation arrives and the first few days have passed, parents often find that the litany of cheers and giggles transform into a chorus of, “I’m bored.” Many parents pore over ideas that will keep their children busy throughout the summer. Many activities that come to mind tend to be expensive, so if cutting costs is a priority, parents might need to think outside the box to come up with entertaining ideas that won’t break the bank. Camp Summer camp is a popular way for kids to spend their summers, but many camps are expensive. The American Camp Association has found that overnight camps can cost anywhere from $325 to $780 a week. Day camp fees may be $100 to $275 per week. Parents who send their children to camp 6

for an entire season might pay anywhere from $3,000 to $9,000 for the seven- to nine-week program. Parents looking for an alternative to costly camps should consider local programs that offer summer activities. Libraries, schools and childcare centers may have programs that run the length of summer and are considerably less expensive than more formal camps. A YMCA or even a swim club may also put together activities. Parents whose children attend afterschool sporting classes, such as karate or soccer, may find that the organizations offer a camp or summer program. Day Trips If a parent is off for the summer, then day trips may be a possibility. Schedule a few day trips to different locations that the kids are excited to see. Newspapers routinely print “Go See It” or “Just Go” listings that highlight local events. The family can gather around the table and decide which outings would be interesting and then mark them on the calendar. Some parents purchase season

Education passes to amusement parks and take the kids several times over the summer. In either case, bring snacks and lunch from home when possible to keep costs in check. Kid Swap Chances are many of your neighbors are also facing the same difficulties as they try to find ways for kids to spend their summer afternoons. Parents can get together and set up a

schedule for entertaining the kids. For example, one parent is responsible for the whole lot one day, while the next day another parent takes a turn. This gives parents the opportunity to take a break from parental responsibilities and enjoy some quiet time. And for the children, time spent in a pool, watching movies, playing video games, or riding bikes is often more enjoyable with friends in tow. Fun Projects Children often want to feel useful, and may enjoy the responsibility of some easy tasks in and around the house -- so long as the tasks are fun. Washing the car with a hose and a bucket of sudsy water is a fun way to cool off during the hot summer days and get a chore done. While parents should not expect a perfect job, they can Article Cont’ on pg 8

Set aside a patch of the yard that children can turn into their own personal gardens. Encourage digging in this area and provide seeds or seedling plants as well as kid-sized gardening tools. Each day the kids can check on the progress of their gardens. Some home-improvement and craft stores sponsor free learning activities for children. They can be held in the morning or afternoon and will teach interesting skills that can be put to use again at home. Summer vacations are soon to arrive, and parents can be armed with a list of enjoyable -yet inexpensive -- ways to keep kids busy.

Family Healthcare

Boosting Self-Esteem in your Teen By: Zaina Mitchell

Everyone remembers how hard it was growing up as a teenager. Your body is changing, and so are your moods. For most of us, puberty hit with a vengeance and left some pretty emotional wounds behind. Loving yourself can be a tough thing to do when you’re being harassed by hormones and attacked by acne. But here’s some good news: you can help your teenager love themselves simply by helping them learn to take better care of themselves. It’s super easy to get them smiling at their reflections in the mirror and on the road to higher, healthier self-esteem. Here’s how: • Teach your teen how to fight acne. We all love Dr. Oz. He’s a health guru with some pretty simple advice for healing and preventing breakouts. He suggests washing the face twice a day, morning and night, with antibacterial soap. Afterwards, in order to kill bacteria living on your skin, apply benzoyl peroxide to heavily affected

areas. Simply keeping pores and skin free of dirt and oils go a long way to getting your teen a glowing, healthy complexion they don’t have to be ashamed of. • Exercise the right to a healthy, happy home for your entire family. Everyone knows that health and diet are very important to maintain for quality mental health. Focus on family time being action time—have fun building your relationship with your teen while also maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Teach your teen how to manage diet and exercise by taking part in it with them. Lead by example, make sure that your home is stocked with what your teen needs in the diet that has been recommended by their doctor. Each person has individual needs that have to be met in order to remain healthy and happy. • Make sure you talk with your teen every day. As parents, it’s easy to get swept up in work—at home, at your

Family Healthcare job, at the grocery store. But never forget that teenagers have a lot going on too, and sometimes simply taking a few minutes every day to talk about their school and social lives can make a huge impact on their relationship with you. It’s a great way to broaden your teen’s relationship and communication skills, which in turn helps them learn how to seek help with problems they may be too shy, or too embarrassed to talk about normally. Mental health is a leading factor in self-esteem, so making sure your teen is as healthy mentally as they are physically can make a huge impact on their ability to build higher self-esteem. • Help promote your teen’s unique individuality. Buy your teen a journal if they like writing. Help get them involved in clubs or sports, or offer to help them discover hobbies they can enjoy in their free time. If your teen wants to try a new style or experience a new activity, help them research it. Be a positive part of your teen’s growth by offering support and suggestions. Let them know that their differences are okay, and encourage them to keep trying new things or mastering skills

like writing, photography, sports, painting, and academics. One of the biggest problems teens face is being persecuted for their differences. Family support is a big factor in overcoming low self-esteem. That’s really all there is to keeping your teenager happy and healthy, both mentally and physically. Remember that you are the biggest role model your child will ever have, so make every moment worth it and never forget to foster positive growth in individuality, to help maintain diet and exercise, to be there when they need to talk, and make sure they wash their faces at least twice a day—Dr. Oz insists on it. Travel Easily with Kids in Tow Many people enjoy traveling. The opportunity to spend free time experiencing other cultures or visiting faraway lands appeals to many people’s inquisitive and adventurous natures, and it’s no wonder retirees often devote so much time traveling the world. Yet traveling as a carefree retiree and traveling as a parent to young children are two entirely different things; and parents’ love of travel is often put to the test when the kids are in tow. But traveling with kids doesn’t have to be a logistical nightmare. The following are a few travel tips for parents about to go on vacation with their little ones. • Check your flight status. Flights are commonly rescheduled, which can be inconvenient for adult travelers who don’t have a couple of kids tagging along. For parents, though, extra time waiting at the airport with kids can be stressful and tough to handle. Before leaving the house, check your flight status to ensure you won’t be spending extra time sitting and waiting at the airport and looking for things to quell your child’s boredom. When booking the flight, sign up for flight updates that are sent directly to your mobile phone. These will keep you posted and save you

the hassle of going online and checking your flight status every few hours. • Check in ahead of time. Many airlines allow passengers to check in ahead of time, typically within 24 to 36 hours of the flight’s scheduled departure. When kids are coming along, the less time you spend in line at the airport the better, and checking in ahead of time can save you from waiting in long check-in lines at the airport. • Confirm what you’re allowed to bring on board. Parents of very young children, be it infants or toddlers, should confirm what they’re allowed to pack and bring on board in advance of their flight. Sterilized water, for instance, might be acceptable to bring on board, but the airline might insist that

14 alamoareakids.com Please tell our advertisers you heard about them in Enjoy San Antonio

Alamo Area Kids it be stored in a baby bottle. Contact the airline a few days before you plan to pack to learn the company’s guidelines. Different airlines might have slightly different guidelines. • Explore the airport. Depending on if you will be flying a domestic or international flight, you might be spending a considerable amount of time waiting to board or even dealing with a layover. These waiting periods and layovers are boring for adults and kids alike, so use the airport to your advantage and go exploring. Kids are often fascinated by airplanes, so take them to gates or terminals where flights are about to depart. • Separate kids on the plane. If you have two or more children in tow, avoid seating them next to one another on the plane. This can lead to spats that will almost certainly

upset your fellow passengers. Let Mom sit with one child and Dad with another, and give kids the window seat so they can entertain themselves by looking out the window when the plane is in flight. • Bring your own entertainment. Kids are going to get bored on the flight, so be sure they have plenty to do while in the air. Bring along a tablet with video capability to keep kids occupied with a movie or television show. This will help reduce the restlessness and boredom they’re likely to feel in the air. Or buy kids a new book or magazine at the airport so they have something new to occupy their time until the plane lands. Traveling with children is seldom easy. But a few tricks of the trade can make the trip go more smoothly.

You’ll Need Air Plane Piggy Bank For this project, you’ll need: empty plastic bottle (we used a 16.9 ounce water bottle) card stock paper (we used white and blue) two-sided tape scissors pencil 1. 2.

3.

4. 5. 6.

Cut a rectangular slot about 1 inch long and a ½-inch wide in the side of the bottle. This is where you’ll drop coins into the piggy bank. Draw two identical pieces for the back half of the plane that look like upsidedown Ls. Once the two pieces are cut, attach them to the plastic bottle with two-sided tape. Pay attention to where the coin slot is – you’ll need to cut into the paper over the coin slot opening. Draw two identical rectangles about 4 inches long and 1 inch thick on card stock paper. These are going to be your engines. Cut the rectangles out and then roll them into long tubes.Tape the tubes, and then attach them to the plastic bottle, one on either side. Note: You want your tubes to touch the “ground” because the engines also serve as “feet” to stabilize the plane piggy bank. Draw two identical triangles with rounded tips on your card stock paper, which will become your wings. Cut them out and attach the wings above the engines. Tip: It helps to fold a tab on the long edges of the cones for easy attachment. Using the bottle cap as a guide, draw your plane propeller. The bottle cap is going to secure the propeller onto the bottle, so you want the circle opening to be slightly smaller than the cap so it doesn’t slip over it. Decorate any way your child wants.

PATRIOTIC PAPER PLATE HAT You’ll need: paper plate scissors blue paint paint brush red & white cardstock cut into triangles white star cut outs or stickers glue double sided foam mounting dots thin elastic tape hole punch 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Cut your paper plate in half. Use the curve of one half along the straight edge of the other half to make a curve & cut. Paint the paper plate blue. Once it’s dry, punch a hole on each bottom side. Flip your plate over. Using the foam adhesive dots, adhere your triangles to the rim. Cut a piece of elastic to fit around your child’s head. Tape each end through the hole to the back side of the plate. Decorate the front with white stars. If using glue, let dry then wear to celebrate!

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa has a long history of caring for the children of San Antonio and South Texas. Since the very first days, their mission has been to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. In 1869, the first hospital in San Antonio was opened by the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word – Santa Rosa Infimary. In 1874, the Sisters began to care for children, bringing four orphans into their care. A pediatric unit opened in the late 1800s. In 1930, the infirmary was renamed Santa Rosa Hospital. Today, Children’s Hospital of San Antonio uses state-of-the-art imaging equipment to deliver clear, distinct, life-saving images through MRI, PET, CT, digital mammography, ultrasound, x-ray, and other advanced imaging technology. 333 N Santa Rosa St, San Antonio, TX 78207 • (210) 704-2011 • www.chofsa.org 22 alamoareakids.com Please tell our advertisers you heard about them in Enjoy San Antonio

Doesn’t it seem like life’s getting harder?

The kids have to go to baseball practice and ballet, you have a business trip coming up and the dog is far overdue for his shots.

Oops, you forgot to pick up the dry cleaning. Again.
