Vigil in San Francisco on Saturday the 15th of December A vigil was held in San Francisco in lieu of the deadliest school shooting in recent years. In support of the families and all those affected the organization MoveOn. org gathered people to join in the vigil in the Mission District’s Dolores Park which lies on 18th street. One of the purposes of the vigil was to mourn the loss of those lost in the shooting, but also to support increased access to mental health care around the country. DIOVAN (DYE’-o-van) (valsartan) Tablets Read the Patient Information that comes with DIOVAN before you take it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or treatment. If you have any questions about DIOVAN, ask your doctor or pharmacist. What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN? DIOVAN can cause harm or death to an unborn baby. Talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your blood pressure if you plan to become pregnant. If you get pregnant while taking DIOVAN, tell your doctor right away. What is DIOVAN? DIOVAN is a prescription medicine called an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It is used in adults to: • lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, 6 to 16 years of age. • treat heart failure in adults. In these patients, DIOVAN may lower the need for hospitalization that happens from heart failure. • improve the chance of living longer after a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in adults. DIOVAN is not for children under 6 years of age or children with certain kidney problems. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Blood pressure is the force in your blood vessels when your heart beats and when your heart rests. You have high blood pressure when the force is too much. DIOVAN can help your blood vessels relax so your blood pressure is lower. Medicines that lower your blood pressure lower your chance of having a stroke or heart attack. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body and causes damage to the blood vessels. If high blood pressure is not treated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and vision problems. Heart Failure occurs when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to your lungs and the rest of your body. Just walking or moving can make you short of breath, so you may have to rest a lot. Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction): A heart attack is caused by a blocked artery that results in damage to the heart muscle. What should I tell my doctor before taking DIOVAN? Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including whether you: • have any allergies. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in DIOVAN. • have a heart condition • have liver problems • have kidney problems • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?” • are breast-feeding. It is not known if DIOVAN passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take DIOVAN or breast-feed, but not both. Talk with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you take DIOVAN. • have ever had a reaction called angioedema, to another blood pressure medicine. Angioedema causes swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat, and may cause difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take: • other medicines for high blood pressure or a heart problem • water pills (also called “diuretics”) • potassium supplements. Your doctor may check the amount of potassium in your blood periodically • a salt substitute. Your doctor may check the amount of potassium in your blood periodically • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen or naproxen) • certain antibiotics (rifamycin group), a drug used to protect against transplant rejection (cyclosporin) or an antiretroviral drug used to treat HIV/AIDS infection (ritonavir). These drugs may increase the effect of valsartan. Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of your medicines with you to show to your doctor and pharmacist when a new medicine is prescribed. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking any new medicine. Your doctor or pharmacist will know what medicines are safe to take together. How should I take DIOVAN? • Take DIOVAN exactly as prescribed by your doctor. • For treatment of high blood pressure, take DIOVAN one time each day, at the same time each day. • If your child cannot swallow tablets, or if tablets are not available in the prescribed strength, your pharmacist will mix DIOVAN as a liquid suspension for your child. If your child switches between taking the tablet and the suspension, your doctor will adjust the dose as needed. Shake the bottle of suspension well for at least 10 seconds before pouring the dose of medicine to give to your child.

• For adult patients with heart failure or who have had a heart attack, take DIOVAN two times each day, at the same time each day. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of DIOVAN and may increase the dose during your treatment. • DIOVAN can be taken with or without food. • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time. • If you take too much DIOVAN, call your doctor or Poison Control Center, or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. What are the possible side effects of DIOVAN? DIOVAN may cause the following serious side effects: Injury or death to an unborn baby. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?” Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension). Low blood pressure is most likely to happen if you also take water pills, are on a low-salt diet, get dialysis treatments, have heart problems, or get sick with vomiting or diarrhea. Lie down, if you feel faint or dizzy. Call your doctor right away. Kidney problems. Kidney problems may get worse if you already have kidney disease. Some patients will have changes on blood tests for kidney function and may need a lower dose of DIOVAN. Call your doctor if you get swelling in your feet, ankles, or hands, or unexplained weight gain. If you have heart failure, your doctor should check your kidney function before prescribing DIOVAN. The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with high blood pressure include: • headache • tiredness • dizziness • stomach (abdominal) pain • flu symptoms Side effects were generally mild and brief. They generally have not caused patients to stop taking DIOVAN. The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with heart failure include: • dizziness • joint and back pain • low blood pressure • tiredness • diarrhea • high blood potassium Common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people after a heart attack which caused them to stop taking the drug include: • low blood pressure • cough • high blood creatinine (decreased kidney function) • rash Tell your doctor if you get any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of DIOVAN. For a complete list, ask your doctor or pharmacist. How do I store DIOVAN? • Store DIOVAN tablets at room temperature between 59° to 86°F (15°C - 30°C). • Keep DIOVAN tablets in a closed container in a dry place. • Store bottles of DIOVAN suspension at room temperature less than 86°F (30°C) for up to 30 days, or refrigerate between 35°F - 46°F (2°C - 8°C) for up to 75 days. • Keep DIOVAN and all medicines out of the reach of children. General information about DIOVAN Medicines are sometimes prescribed for conditions that are not mentioned in patient information leaflets. Do not use DIOVAN for a condition for which it was not prescribed. Do not give DIOVAN to other people, even if they have the same symptoms you have. It may harm them. During our annual Holiday employee luncheon, the publisher of EL OBSERVADOR thanked all individuals present for their contributions to reliable information service which EO provides to this community, All EO’s journalists are Hispanics. This firm has redefined itself from being just a weekly ‘newspaper’ to being recognized as a firm devoted to its mission of using multimedia technology to distribute information to those who read and value our efforts. EO wants to thank its readers who are growing in numbers, both its readers in print and online. We thank our readers who are supporting our advertisers. We thank our advertisers for their use of our information distribution services to reach potential consumer clients. Both are increasing our ability to publish more information and post it online. The three, EO, readers, and advertising clients are a symbiotic synergistic grouping. We are looking forward to possible changes in the local educational system which many feel need to consolidate, update and modernize. Thirty-two school districts are about 17 too many. Fewer Superintendents and associated staffs would permit the resources supporting their positions to be reallocated towards continuing education for teachers and students; updated IT educational aids; support for music, cultural, and arts, etc. We look forward to having charter schools be placed where needed most urgently and kept out of those school communities which are successful. Washington
Information and commentary has been provided about local education issues because it is the most important developmental activity for this community’s future. Factual, truthful information and ideas empower school district constituents to function better in this information oriented economy and society. Cultural values and perspectives are important. Having personal skills and knowledge does empower one when coupled with a system of logic, morals, ethics and religion. The goal/purpose of preparing our kids is both required and essential. Hispanics must renew their efforts to identify and support candidates for top level local education and civic leadership as elected officials. Our educational institutions need direct input from all cultural perspectives and values. The achievement of inclusive diversity requires direct involvement and engagement. The civic and educational system’s leadership must include Latinos. We commend Benjamin Hernandez for attempting to become the first Hispanic elected to the Mission-West Valley Community College board. Hispanics must begin to contribute to campaign funds candidates need to conduct an effective campaign. It takes about $100,000 to become an elected official (county, city, school district). It is not only that your vote is your voice; your campaign contribution which enables and empowers the candidate of your choice, while minimizing the impact of special interests. That is the American way. ‘El dedazo’ does not work in a democratic community. The high school education system focuses upon preparing students for college level training. The vocations

and crafts are not addressed in a manner that informs youth and parents about these choices. Youth must be guided towards all types of accessible jobs because not all have the resources, or personal ambition, needed to be a successful college student. Youth need to be informed about unions and their paid apprentice opportunities. For example, many parents are not aware of the 19 vocational training programs available at CCOC (Central County Occupational Center). Basic to any job are essential skills of reading, writing, arithmetic, communication and relationships. Too often students are advanced without having mastered their ‘grade level requirements’, let alone higher levels of achievement. Too often, the materialistic wants cause our youth to drop out of school to earn money at low wage levels in ‘dead end’ employment which trap them forever in poverty. An economy is needed which provides career ladder jobs. Take time to comprehend ObamaCare reform being implemented. Advocate for needed Comprehensive National Immigration Policy Reform. Learn effective money management especially with respect to credit, banking, mortgages & foreclosures. As consumers of goods and services, we must report exploitation, abuse and illegal acts. Going Green to Save Green Supervisor Dave Cortese SANTA CLARA COUNTY DISTRICT 3 What if I told you I had a program that would give you a guaranteed savings on your utility bill? Would you think it is a scam? It isn’t. Energy efficiency retrofits of your home will provide cost savings for you. Unless your home was built within the last decade, you are likely spending more money than you should on your heating and cooling bills. We all know that double pane windows are more effective at insulating your house, but did you know that if they weren’t installed correctly, cold air could still leak around the windows? Sealing around windows, doors, and ducts are one of the least expensive upgrades that you can make to improve comfort and energy efficiency. Other simple things you can do include reducing the temperature on your water heater, installing low flow water faucets and showers, and making sure you aren’t over-watering your landscaping. If you want to save even more money, you can add insulation, install a programmable thermostat, or upgrade your furnace or air conditioning unit to a more efficient unit. You may be thinking that these are too hard to do or you don’t know where to start. Don’t worry, there are many services available to help analyze your home to determine what measures you can take and they can also do the upgrades for you. Here at the county, we are in the process of completing many of these same projects. The Board of Supervisors recently approved an agree-
ment to install fuel cells at four county buildings which will produce 24.5 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy every year—or enough to power almost 2,500 homes. Not only will these projects reduce the county’s CO2 emissions by over 200 million pounds, it will also provide $15.7 million in net electricity cost savings over the 20 year agreement. The best part about this project is that the county will not be spending any taxpayer money upfront. Instead the project developer will be paid with the savings generated. This means that we can immediately use the cost savings to help pay for needed county services such as the Valley Medical Center or the County Sheriff. The county also received a $3 million loan from the California Energy Commission to fund a comprehensive energy efficiency retrofit here at the County Government Center. This loan, at a very low one percent interest rate, will be used to upgrade the building’s lighting and lighting controls, implementing efficiency measures for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning units
and much more. When completed, these measures will offset about 35 percent of the buildings current electricity usage, saving additional taxpayer money. All these things are great, but they won’t help the environment if the next generation doesn’t continue our work. That is why I am continuing my Silicon Valley Kids Climate Club—formerly known as the Cortese Kids Climate Club—to encourage our students to incorporate environmentally friendly actions into their lives. When it becomes second nature to walk or bike to the store or to reduce water and energy usage, it is much easier to save money and maintain a healthy lifestyle. As part of this club, I personally visit local schools and youth groups to talk about what the county is doing to save money by helping the environment as well as what they can do both in their schools and homes. La mayoría apoya obras de caridad cuya labor se ve de primera mano a nivel local. Pero en los buzones de todos los días, hay muchas invitaciones de otras organizaciones de caridad locales y nacionales. ¿Cómo pueden los donantes verificar su veracidad? The Santa Clara County Board of Education has elected Grace H. Mah as president for the coming year, and Dr. Michael Chang as vice president

La Premio Nobel de la Paz, Rigoberta Menchú, lamentó “el mal uso” que se da al final del calendario maya con la difusión de un supuesto fin del mundo, y llamó a revalorar el mensaje de paz y renovación que en realidad dejaron los mayas.

El delantero paraguayo Robin Ramírez y el defensa Ignacio González fueron presentados como refuerzos de Pumas de la UNAM, de cara al arranque del Torneo Clausura 2013 de la Liga MX del futbol mexicano. Van nadadores mexicanos rumbo a Mundial de Natación Monterrey NOTIMEX Los nadadores mexicanos Gustavo Berreta, Liliana Ibáñez y Fernanda González van con buena brazada en busca de apoderarse de un sitio en la selección mexicana de cara al Campeonato Mundial de la especialidad, que se disputará en Barcelona, España, en julio venidero. En las acciones del Campeonato Nacional de Natación de Curso Corto 2012, los tres nadadores nacionales demostraron el por qué son los mejores en cada una de sus especialidades para buscar un sitio en la representación mundialista. En el caso de Berreta, impuso récord absoluto mexicano en los 200 metros libre
con crono de 1:48.02 minutos y además de buscar su pase al Mundial de Barcelona, también espera competir en la Universiada Mundial de Kazan, Rusia, en 2013. Berreta bajó tres centésimas la marca que pertenecía desde 2004 al seleccionado olímpico Joshua Illika, cuando marcó en alberca de 25 metros 1:48.05 minutos. El tiempo de Berreta también es considerado nuevo récord del evento. En lo que toca a la categoría de primera fuerza, la guanajuatense Liliana Ibáñez también impuso récords en 50 mariposa y 200 libre. “Fue una final muy cerrada, no me la esperaba, teníamos programado un trabajo de cara al selectivo de abril para el Mundial y se dieron las
cosas desde ahora, eso significa que vamos por buen camino”, mencionó el joven nadador. El doble medallista centroamericano en Mayagüez 2010 comentó que además de buscar una buena preparación para el selectivo al Campeonato Mundial marcado en abril, también está en sus planes la Universiada Mundial, donde dijo “creo que tenemos un nivel más estudiantil, pero el campeonato mundial también es importante”. Mientras en el caso de Ibáñez hizo récord de campeonato nacional y absoluto mexicano en los 200 libre tras su marca de 1:58.10, además de los 50 mariposa con 27.24 segundos.
