ENACT A SIMPLE TAX CODE WHICH REVEALS ALL GOVERNMENT OPERATION COSTS

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVDOR A simply written IRS tax code is a requirement to permit determination of all government operations costs. If the IRS tax reform can be written to achieve full transparency then it may become possible to determine all governance operational costs. With full transparency, it may be possible to determine the amounts of taxes paid by anyone; the amount of taxes avoided by special interests; and true costs of all tax avoidance entitlements. With a 'fully accessible income tax revenues database' a major step towards regeneration of the full faith & credit along with the trust of American taxpayers. Full accountability based upon established responsibility with integrity is a very desired goal.

The IRS income tax reform proposals recently proposed

by GOP leaders, both Senators and House members, is not the vehicle which will take America towards a higher living standard which may be enjoyed by all.

Tax reform must be written in language that is explicit enough to require no interpretation by a high- priced accountant. The wording used must be direct and very specific. The eventual objective is to have a database of all tax revenues from all sources enabling determination of the total cost of governance. This is basic essential information may make possible the management of this nation's national debt including its reduction because of the interest payment thereon have no return on investment.

The administration of this

nation's tax revenues must become totally transparent in order to determine the hidden costs of special entitlements. None of these special entitlements or allocations must be allowed to exist in any hidden manner and without sunset schedules.

In addition to this opportunity to make constructive and necessary reforms to the IRS tax code, this effort presents Congress an opportunity to determine the undisclosed federal regulation costs.

According to data recently released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, American households on average spent more last year on federal, state and local taxes ($10,489) than they did on food and clothing combined ($9,006). Think about that. These official figures confirm what Americans have known generally for a long time – taxes impose a significant economic burden on its working-class residents.

Those homes with mortgages are a special target of this proposed IRS tax code: The MORTGAGE INTEREST PAID must continue to be 'tax deductible' in its entirety because those payments end up as income to the moneylenders insured by federal agencies (FDIC, FHA and FMA).

Moneylenders have minimal risk; the home purchaser has no 'contractual considerations' allowing payment of interest only when extended unemployment or illness happen resulting in decreased family income.

The (proposed) GOP mortgage interest deduction plan would hurt middle class homeowners. According to Kenneth R. Harney (Washington Post, 11.08.2017), GOP Tax Proposals Contain Major Headaches for Homeowners: “No other major economic

sector gets hit so hard by GOP's proposal in so many places as homeownership.”

Consider the following 'hidden sneaky language' items which impact mortgages: “You’ve (already) heard about the splashiest cut proposed: A reduction in the maximum deductible mortgage amount from $1 million to $500,000.” In this Silicon Valley microeconomy, those homes bought for $20,000 back in 1960's are now marketable for $800,000 (so your get to pay 15% capital gains taxes on $300,000 now amounting to a $45,000 reduction of your estate (which, if you have no cash, may force you to sell which is a 'gentrification mechanism' that breaks up established neighborhoods.

Congress by Mike Leyba, Director of Communications, United for a Fair Economy, (617-423-2148, ext. 105): “The Republican tax plan would disproportionately benefit wealthy individuals and corporations with provisions including repealing the estate tax, repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax, and slashing the top pass-through tax rate. This proposal would mean wealthy people could pay a lower tax rate than many middle-class families and transfer massive inheritances to their heirs, tax- free. Such proposals that benefit the wealthy would exacerbate the current wealth disparity in the US, where the top 1% of households hold 42% of the wealth.”

Another example, (Newly proposed) Section 1402, (after the sale of single family's principal home), would significantly alter the $250,000 (single; $500,000 joint) Capital Gains Tax Deduction provided you have used the house as your principal residence for an aggregate two years out of the five years preceding its sale. You can also use the exclusion as frequently as once every two years. The first 'feature' has vanised; the second has been expanded resulting in very few qualified deductions.

Outcome: Homeowners get to pay capital gains taxes more often than now.

“As you consider changes to the tax code, we urge you to oppose any legislation that further exacerbates inequality. Tax reform should be, at a minimum, revenue neutral—without using gimmicks like dynamic scoring. We are deeply concerned that revenue loss would lead to deep cuts in critical services such as education, Medicare and Medicaid, and would hamper our nation’s ability to restore investments in our people and communities.”

No other major sector of the economy gets hit so hard in the proposal in so many places as homeownership.

SALEM, Ore. -- This week is American Education Week, and more than just teachers are in the spotlight for the support they provide to students. Each day of Education Week has a theme, and today is Education Support Professionals Day. Known as ESPs, they include school bus drivers, janitorial staff, office clerks, food service workers and many more, and they make up the network that keeps school days running.

Leslie Lindberg-Harper has worked with schools for nearly three decades, served as president of the Association of Salem-

Keizer ESPs and is currently a special programs instructional assistant at an elementary school in Salem. She said ESPs are dedicated to the students.

"What it comes down to is the why - why we're there. And it's the students,” LindbergHarper said. "It's not for the money, it's not for any kind of social status. So, overall, you know, as far as ESPs and teachers too, the why is because of the kids."

American Education Week has celebrated the importance of education annually for nearly a century. It began in 1921. This year's focus is "Public Schools for All." ESPs may f ly under the radar sometimes, but their ability to change a child's life doesn't go unnoticed. Lindberg-Harper

Suzanne Potter California News Service SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Almost two-thirds of workers in California don't have a bachelor's degree - but only 37 percent of them have a "good job," according to a new report.

Researchers from the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce teamed up with JP Morgan Chase to study the kinds of jobs that help expand a solid middle class - defined as jobs that start at $35,000 a year, with a median salary of $55,000. Report co-author Neil Ridley, state initiative director with Georgetown, said since 1991, 34 states - including California - have added good jobs for those without bachelors' degrees.

"Good jobs for workers without a bachelor's degree have increasingly gone to workers with more than a high school education," Ridley said; "so, they've recently gone to workers with an associate's degree, especially."

The study also found California lost 424,000 good manufacturing jobs since 1991, but made up more than that in skilled services industries, such as healthcare and financial services. It also showed the capacity to expand the middle class depended on each state's ability to match the skills of young people entering the workforce with the increasingly hightech needs of industry.

Kathy Booth is a senior research associate with WestEd, an education policy nonprof it. She said it's no longer enough to work hard and be "good with your hands" - now, everyone needs to be tech sav v y.

"Now all of that work happens through computer programs," Booth said. "And so, you can't have somebody who's just good with a hammer or good with a sander. They actually have to be able to program a computer that's cutting complicated shapes in a variety of materials. So, even things that we think of as 'blue collar jobs' really require that people have a more advanced education."

Chauncy Lennon, head of workforce initiatives at the f inancial f irm JP Morgan Chase, said high schools should steer kids toward in-demand, high-paying f ields at an early age.

"Students could begin to develop the skills they need starting in ninth grade and could graduate from high school having done a program of study linked to those skills," Lennon said. "And [they could] understand what pathways exist, whether that's right to the labor market or to some kind of post-secondary option at a community college or other kind of training provider."

California has been pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into apprenticeship programs, a learnand-earn strategy designed to keep students from dropping out of community college.

La eliminación de medicamentos por el inodoro y el suministro de agua

CARNE DE CERDO CON PASTA PAPPARDELLE PUTTANESCA, ALBAHACA Y QUESO PECORINO

Retira la cacerola del horno y deja enfriar el cerdo en su salsa de 1 a 2 horas, hasta que sea fácil de manipular. Desecha la rama de tomillo y la hoja de laurel.

4. Coloca la carne de cerdo sobre una tabla para cortar y desmenúzala con tus dedos o con dos tenedores. Pon a un lado la mitad de la carne desmenuzada para otro uso (ver la nota abajo). Recoge la grasa de la superficie de la salsa. Mezcla la mitad de la carne cerdo con la salsa. Mantenlo a fuego lento.

5. En una sartén grande, preferiblemente antiadherente, calienta las dos cucharadas restantes de aceite a fuego mediano.

Corta en trocitos el ajo restante. Añade el ajo con las alcaparras, la otra cucharada de anchoas y la media cucharada de ají picado y cocina unos dos minutos, revolviendo ocasionalmente hasta que los tomates se ablanden. Pon a un lado.

INGREDIENTES • 4 libras de paleta de cerdo deshuesada, asada y sin grasa • 2 cucharaditas de sal kosher o más, a gusto • 1 cucharadita de pimienta negra fresca molida • 5 dientes de ajo • 4 cucharadas de aceite de oliva extra virgen. Más, para servir (opcional) • 2 zanahorias picadas • 2 tallos de apio, en trozos • 1 cebolla amarilla en trocitos • 2 cucharadas de anchoas en aceite, escurridas y picadas finamente • 2 cucharaditas de ají en escamas o más, a gusto • 28 onzas de tomates enlatados, pelados enteros en su jugo, cortados gruesos.

Guardar el jugo aparte.

1. Para preparar la carne de cerdo: Frota la paleta de cerdo con abundante sal y pimienta. Corta 2 dientes de ajo en 16 rebanaditas. Haz dieciséis incisiones de 1 pulgada e inserta una rebanadita de ajo en cada incisión. Cubre la carne de cerdo y ponla a enfriar de 6 a 12 horas.

2. En una cacerola de hierro fundido o refractaria, calienta 2 cucharadas de aceite a fuego mediano o alto. Añade el cerdo y cocina hasta dorar todos sus lados. Traslada la carne de cerdo a una fuente. Vierte todo menos 2 cucharadas de grasa y deja la cacerola en el fuego medio a alto. Corta 2 dientes de ajo más.

Añade la zanahoria, el apio, la cebolla y el ajo picado y cocínalo todo, revolviendo de vez en cuando, hasta que se ablanden los ingredientes, aproximadamente 3 minutos. Agrega 1 cucharada de anchoas y 1 ½ cucharadita de ají en escamas y revuelve todo hasta que despida aroma, aproximadamente 1 minuto. Vierte los tomates con su jugo, el tomillo y el laurel en la cacerola de hierro y deja que hierva, raspando los trozos adheridos al fondo con una cuchara de madera. Coloca la carne de cerdo con su caldo en la cacerola.

Añade suficiente agua caliente para casi cubrir la carne de cerdo y deja que hierva.

3. Cubre bien la cacerola y cocina la carne en el horno a 375 grados F., volteando la carne de cerdo de vez en cuando, añadiendo agua caliente según sea necesario para reponer el líquido

6. Para cocinar la pasta. Pon a hervir la pasta Pappardelle en una cacerola grande de agua con sal, hasta que esté al dente, según las instrucciones de la caja. Retira la pasta y guarda ½ taza del agua de cocción. Escurre bien la pasta y viértela en una cazuela. Añade la salsa, la mezcla de tomatitos cherry y la mitad de la albahaca

y el queso romano. Mézclalos bien. Si la salsa te parece muy espesa, revuélvela con un poco del agua de cocción que separaste.

7. Vuelve a colocar la sartén a fuego mediano.

Añade la pasta y cocina hasta que esté caliente, más o menos 2 minutos. Vierte la pasta en platos hondos, y cúbrela con la carne de cerdo y la albahaca restantes.

Sirve con aceite adicional para rociar la pasta y un bloque de queso romano para rallar con un pelador de vegetales.

Nota: Esta receta rinde alrededor de dos libras de carne de cerdo desmenuzado.

Usa la mitad de la carne para esta salsa y guarda el resto para otra comida. Congela la carne de cerdo en un contenedor para congelador bien cerrado y consérvala hasta por 3 meses. Descongela y calienta antes de servir. Con un panecillo crujiente puedes preparar un excelente emparedado, mejor si es con queso provolone derretido, brócoli salteado, y ajo.

In 2016, consumers nationwide filed nearly 5,400 complaints against plumbers with BBB. Many complaints allege shoddy work and poor customer service, so it’s important to do

CALIFORNIA DMV TO OFFER REAL ID DRIVER LICENSES AND ID CARDS IN 2018 Federal Enforcement Begins October 1, 2020

Sacramento – The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will begin offering the option to apply for a federal compliant REAL ID driver license or identification (ID) card beginning January 22, 2018 at DMV offices statewide. Californians may choose either a REAL ID or a federal non-compliant card.

The federal REAL ID Act of 2005 was passed by Congress in response to the events of 9/11. Under the REAL ID Act, all states must meet requirements set by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for its driver licenses and identification cards to be accepted for federal purposes, such as boarding a domestic flight or visiting a military base or certain federal facilities, by October 1, 2020.

The federal compliant REAL ID driver license or ID card is optional. A valid US

Passport or US Passport Card, military ID, or other federally approved identification can be used to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities. If a customer has another federally approved identification, does not fly, or does not plan to visit a military base or certain federal facilities, they do not need a REAL ID and will have the option to apply for a federal non-compliant driver license or ID card.

A DMV field office visit is required to apply for a REAL ID card. Applicants should make an appointment and must be prepared with the following documents:

Valid California driver licenses and ID cards will continue to be accepted by TSA to board a domestic flight and by federal agents to enter certain federal facilities until October 1, 2020. After that date, a REAL ID or other federally accepted ID will be required.

• Proof of Social Security Number: Such as a Social Security card, W-2, or paystub with full SSN.

A diario, clientes de electricidad y gas natural

Amenaza para desconectar: Los estafadores pueden decirle al cliente de forma agresiva que su factura está vencida y el servicio se desconectará si no se realiza un pago, generalmente en menos de una hora.

Solicitud de pago inmediato: Los estafadores pueden indicar al cliente que compre una tarjeta pre-pagada y luego llamar de nuevo para supuestamente realizar un pago de factura.

C Corporations, S Corporations and LLCs are legal business structures distinguished by how they pay their taxes under U.S. federal income tax law, whereas a B Corporation (or “B Corp,” with the “B” standing for “Benefit”) isn’t actually a legal entity and is still taxed based upon its chosen C, S or LLC structure.

“B-Corp” is a certification awarded by the non-profit B Lab to for-profit companies which meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. “B Corp is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to milk,” reports B Lab, which has certified upwards of 2,100 companies from 50 countries and across 130 industries. To qualify as a B Corp, a company must be working primarily to solve an environmental or social issue through its work as a business entity.

B Lab launched in 2006 with the first B Corp certification of 19 companies coming a year later. The non-profit began lobbying efforts across the country in 2008. In 2010 Maryland passed the nation’s first B Corporation Law, followed closely by California in 2011. When Patagonia and 11 other well-known California companies registered as B Corps on the first day possible in January 2012, major national news outlets covered the story, putting the B Corp concept “on the map,” so to speak. And later that year, the movement went global when companies in Africa and Brazil became certified B Corps.

“I think B Corp ... will allow the values of my company to continue, even after it's sold and it’s way down the line and we’re dead,” says Yvon Chouinard, Patagonia’s founder, adding that he compares it to a conservation

easement on a piece of property. “It’s a conservation easement on a business.”

Besides Patagonia, some of the better-known companies now certified as B Corps include Ben & Jerry’s, Etsy, Warby Parker, Plum Organics, New Belgium Brewery, Stonyfield Farm, King Arthur Flour, Cabot Cheese, Badger and Seventh Generation.

Today 33 U.S. states recognize Benefit Corporation status while six more—Alaska, Georgia, Iowa, Mississippi, New Mexico and Oklahoma—are considering it. Companies that want to pursue B Corp status should check whether it’s recognized in their state by looking it up on benefitcorp.net’s Stateby-State Status page. If the answer is yes, the next step is taking B Lab’s “B Impact Assessment,” which assesses the overall impact a company has on its stakeholders, including a heavy emphasis on sustainability and environmental considerations. The assessment takes two to four hours to complete depending on company size, sector and location. Several of the questions concern sustainability issues such as energy efficiency, waste and pollution mitigation efforts. For instance, one of the assessment questions asks: “What percent of energy (relative to company revenues) was saved in the last year for your corporate facilities?”

Companies that qualify must then revise their articles of incorporation so that managers and directors can start factoring in how their decisions affect all stakeholders, not just financial shareholders, while recertification every two years requires that companies maintain that commitment to all stakeholders in order to keep their status.

La voz en español del icónico Rayo McQueen habla sobre la magia de Cars 3 y lo que refleja de la humanidad que es la película para él.

Hola Kuno. Muchas gracias por darnos un tiempo para hablar sobre Cars 3. Para empezar, ¿en dónde encontramos a tu personaje de Rayo McQueen y sus amigos al empiezo de esta película?

Cars 3 tiene un talentoso elenco de voz en inglés, pero también tiene un elenco de voces en español igualmente impresionante.

Si alguna vez has visto y escuchado las versiones en español de cualquiera de las tres películas de Cars, es posible que hayas notado el talento de Kuno Becker, que ha sido Rayo McQueen desde 2006. Tuvimos la oportunidad de conversar con Becker y tener sus opiniones sobre la nueva entrega. en la franquicia, y cómo Rayo McQueen y el resto del elenco han crecido desde la primera película.

Lo encontramos cambiando, que es lo único seguro en esta vida. El cambio. Y es lo más interesante. Además, los personajes cambian, y les pasan cosas y se vuelven alguien más, pero con la misma esencia es lo que queremos ver porque nos pasa a nosotros. Lo encontramos [a McQueen] dejando de ser un corredor y convertirse en un entrenador, y eso es un cambio increíblemente radical para un corredor de coches, o para un cochecito que corre, o para un actor que dirige, o muchos ejemplos más que son más obvios que no voy a decir porque están muy tontos. ¿Porque crees que es tan esencial el cambio o el crecimiento de estos personajes?

Creo que el cambio es muy interesante, porque los comportamientos humanos interesantes son los que valen la pena llevar al cine. Una vez me sorprendió mucho lo que le preguntaron a Stanley Kubrick, que daba muy pocas entrevistas, en donde encontraba sus historias porque las historias, [para ese reportero], eran lo más interesante. Y Kubrick le dijo que no. Dijo que eran los comportamientos humanos [lo] interesante. Y esta historia tiene los dos.

aplauso a ti, de esa forma. Pero recibes otras cosas que no sabías que ibas a recibir. Si le dicen a un actor que dirige, dicen, ‘pues que flojera, yo quiero estar enfrente de la cámara’. Pero cuando diriges y te gusta te das cuenta que tienes otros placeres, otras cosas que te llenan enormemente, incluso más. ¿Qué es un ejemplo de algo que aprecias de esta película?

Mi [parte] favorita de la película es súper clara para mí. Lo que más me gusta de esta película es que habla de la igualdad. Esta película está llena de cochecitos de todos los colores diferentes y la historia está llena de cochecitos de todas las formas, voces, y súper distintos. Como los seres humanos.

Somos de colores diferentes, creemos en cosas diferentes. Y somos todos seres humanos y todos una raza, la raza humana.

Entonces, ¿vez a esta película como un paso progresivo para las películas animadas por el uso de la igualdad?

Yo creo eso. Todos son distintos, pero todos son cochecitos. Y yo creo en eso, en la igualdad. Imagínate, todo lo que significa para una empresa tan grande, tan exitosa [como] Disney/Pixar, hablar de algo que tienen que hablar porque está sucediendo. Y

este gobierno, estas personas fascistas en el gobierno [están] encendiendo la llama de la desigualdad, están tratando de encender el racismo, tratando de encender todas estas cosas. Esta película es para niños, es inspiracional, bonita, divertida, atractiva, pero tiene un mensaje increíblemente importante que es ese. Me parece valiente que Disney/Pixar lo haga. Es su deber que los niños crezcan sabiendo que todos somos iguales como es en esta película, que ven desde chiquitos.

Finalmente, ¿por qué crees que las personas, los niños como los adultos, deberían echar un vistazo a Cars 3?

Yo creo que es increíblemente importante.

Más que nada, se van a divertir muchísimo, si una película no entretiene, yo no creo que es una película buena, porque no [atrae] a la audiencia, y una película sin audiencia no es nada. Esta entretiene, entonces se la van a pasar increíble, es un técnico magistral, pero además es increíblemente importante que la enseñen a sus hijos, que sepan la importancia y lo crucial que es, el mensaje que le va a dar de igualdad. Sobre todo, porque ellos son la última esperanza.

Los cometas son fragmentos restantes de la formación del sistema solar. Un cometa es un cuerpo pequeño que orbita el Sol viajando en órbitas gigantescas.

Está formado específicamente por roca, hielo, polvo, dióxido de carbono, nitrógeno y otros gases volátiles. La cola del cometa se forma cuando éste comienza a acercarse al Sol, pues el hielo y los gases se derriten en un proceso conocido como “sublimación”.

Una lluvia de meteoritos es el fenómeno que ocurre cuando las partículas de polvo y roca de un cometa chocan con la atmósfera de la tierra.

Existen trillones de cometas en el sistema solar.

Muchos de ellos, transitan en el cinturón de asteroides que existe entre Marte y Júpiter, y en el cinturón de Kuiper, formado más allá de la órbita de Neptuno. Plutón es mayormente un “cometa” y no un mini-planeta, siendo el mayor cuerpo celeste que órbita en el cinturón Kuiper.

Desde épocas remotas los cometas han causado gran admiración, misterio y hasta temor en los habitantes de la Tierra, porque cuando un cometa aparecía, ocurrían coincidencialmente, sucesos políticos, sociales o naturales que afectaban a las masas. Según los últimos avances científicos, se cree que fue el choque de un cometa con la Tierra, el impacto que provocó que los dinosaurios se extinguieran. La aparición de un cometa no se puede presagiar a la ligera. Aunque existe una probabilidad que un cometa choque con nuestro planeta cada 50 a 65 millones

de años.

En la época medieval la aparición de los cometas causaba gran revuelo y temor en la población. Existían todo tipo de leyendas y profecías en su entorno.

Incluso, se cree que fue un cometa, lo que hoy conocemos como <La estrella de Belén >.

El pionero en el estudio de los cometas fue Edmund Halley, fue él quién descubrió que el cometa de 1531, 1607 y 1682, era el mismo. Y predijo además que ese mismo cometa aparecería nuevamente en 1758. Por ello el Cometa Halley, lleva su nombre en honor a él.

Aunque es muy poco probable que un cometa se acerque a la tierra, sí existe una mínima posibilidad, de ello existen ejemplos reales. Los cráteres de la luna son huecos enormes dejados por el impacto de cometas. En 1994 un enorme cometa chocó con el planeta Júpiter, causando estragos en la superficie del planeta. Los cometas suelen llegar a medir de 5 a 100 o más millas de diámetro, y viajan a una distancia de 10 millas por segundo. La cola del cometa es más larga. La cola del gran cometa de 1811 llegó a medir alrededor de un millón de kilómetros de largo.

Entre las profecías que se han hecho, existe una asociada a “Nostradamus” que augura la aparición de un enorme cometa que pudiera acercarse peligrosamente a la Tierra alrededor del año 2020.

También se especula la aparición de un nuevo planeta en el sistema solar, unos le llaman Ajenjo y otros Vulcano Nadie sabe lo que sucederá, ni siquiera los astrónomos de la NASA, ya que los cometas son impredecibles y pueden aparecer de un momento a otro.

Así de sorprendente es el espacio sideral.

MESSY DESKS ARE PERFECTLY OPTIMIZED Shelly Palmer

While I was out at a meeting, my meticulously neat wife armed herself with a feather duster, donned protective pink rubber gloves, and viciously, mercilessly straightened, organized, and dusted the desk in my home office. My desk was clean, but the results were suboptimal.

Everyone is talking about data and how valuable it is. But do you know the names and functions of the most basic algorithms being used to turn data into action? Have you brushed up on your math skills and started to think about how data will flow through the systems you are asking your engineers to create?

As it has taken me less than a day to re–mess up my desk, I thought it would be fun to talk about some of the algorithms we use every day that are also used by computer scientists, data scientists, AI, and machine learning systems.

Insertion Sort My wife unknowingly used an algorithm to sort my papers. She sorted the papers alphabetically by arranging them one by one in their appropriate position. This technique is called Insertion Sort, and while it is intuitive, the time spent sorting increases exponentially (aka quadratic time). It gets worse. After she sorted the documents, she grouped them by letter and put each group into corresponding hanging folders in my desk file drawer. Her choice to insertion sort the data on my desk (and then store the data alphabetically) did nothing to speed my access to the data or help me efficiently find the data I’m most likely to need next.

An Aesthetic Triumph, but a Predictive Disaster While my desk was devoid of paper, was dust free, and looked great, all of my papers were now tucked away in a file drawer organized for firstletter alphabetic search. There was no respect or attention paid to frequency of the data usage or temporal constraints (such as an invoice with a due date). Sorting data by an arbitrary criterion may satisfy your aesthetic sensibility, but it may make no sense in a data-driven world.

Self-Organizing Lists In practice, there is a caching algorithm that is currently thought to be the very best at predicting your future data access needs. And my messy desk is a great example. The algorithm is known as LRU (Least Recently Used). This optimization

algorithm is based on the idea that the papers you most recently used are the ones you are most likely to use again. Conversely, the papers you have not used in a long time will probably remain unused.

So the optimal way to deal with papers on your desk is to put the paper you just finished working with on the top of the pile. If you follow this algorithm (which requires no thought at all), the math says the maximum time you will spend searching for anything in the pile will never be more than twice the time you would have spent if you were clairvoyant. Messy desks are perfectly optimized.

Stupid Time If you need a practical test (if you don’t trust the math), time how long it takes to find something you did yesterday in the pile of papers in front of you. I would be surprised if it was more than a few seconds.

Now, try to find the same thing (with the same search criteria) in the file folder system. It will likely take much longer. Plus, unlike the cache in your messy pile, searching the folders will require you to remember the name of the vendor or title of the paper. Importantly, even if searching the alphabetic folders takes the same amount of time as searching the pile on your desk (which it won’t), you have to add back the hours spent organizing the files (doing meta-work) for no purpose at all.
