Program Helps Hard-Working Families Increase their Financial Capabilities San Jose CALIFORNIA Peninsula Family Service, founded more than 60 years ago in San Mateo County, held its Santa Clara County Expansion Event for its Ways to Work Vehicle Loan Program on November 14. Nationally recognized, the Ways to Work Vehicle Loan Program offers hard-working families the opportunity to access lowcost loans to assist in the purchase of pre-owned cars needed to more easily meet job demands while raising children. The program is available to families who live or work in either San Mateo or Santa Clara County and are in need of a reliable vehicle but do not have a credit rating that enables them to get a traditional loan or who could only get one at a very high interest rate. The program was launched to help combat predatory lending practices targeting families struggling to get ahead. Highlighting the importance of the Ways to Work Vehicle Loan Program, Rob Lajoie, Financial Empow-
erment Program Director said, “Convenient transportation is such an important part of our way of life in the Bay Area. Families without a reliable vehicle often find themselves struggling to hold onto their jobs and maintain their quality of life. The Ways to Work Vehicle Loan Program provides them with access to affordable car loans that can help them keep their jobs and maintain a stable home for their families.” The Emcee for the Ways to Work Expansion Event was Carolyn Johnson, ABC7 News anchor and a member of the Peninsula Family Service board of directors. Additional speakers included Jeff Faulkner, President, Ways to Work, Inc.; Glen Brooks, Jr., Interim Executive Director at Peninsula Family Service; Celeste Fiore, VTA; Jim Dale, United Way Silicon Valley; and a commendation from Lara McCabe, policy aide in the office of Supervisor Dave Cortese. Closing out the event were two client speakers, Regina and Alisha, with Alisha receiving a ceremonial car key from Audi Stevens Creek
where she recently purchased her vehicle. Ways to Work, Inc. currently operates 50 sites in 22 states and to date has helped nearly 30,000 families access more than $60 million in affordable car loans. The program also provides focused financial education, credit repair guidance and individual coaching that helps families become financially capable and self-sufficient. The majority of Ways to Work loan recipients are single mothers who make multiple stops throughout their day in order to transport children to and from childcare, commute to and from work, and secure basic necessities for their families. More than 94 percent of program participants report that their car loan helped them maintain or improve their employment situation; 58 percent opened a bank account; 50 percent reported an increase in earnings; and 26 percent indicated that they have increased their educational attainment since receiving the Ways to Work loan.

SHARE YOUR ABUNDANCE THANKFULLY

Last Wednesday, October 31st, I looked out the window viewing the steady stream of wildlife that is indigenous to the microecosystem which I, as a gardening hobbyist try to sustain. The Cherry tree retains its big leafs; the apricot tree is beginning to lose its yellowish foliage; each harbors small chickadees with a black skull cap, and the several hanging baskets having bright red impatiens flowers contrast with the dark green foliage beyond. Squirrels are chasing each other….I believe its their mating season. All have very furry, fluffy tails which portend of a lengthy winter. In the course of seasons, I have watched raccoons and field rats foraging, opossums, mallard ducks, artic geese, field mice, blue jays, robins, morning doves, and a host of flying insects. White winged butterflies and monarchs, which are magnificent. Even the termites have behaved by only being in the firewood. The house is warm and comfortable, electric power is on; computer and its printer works. Phone lines, radio, and TV work; water lines, sewer lines, and utility lines all are doing their job. The furnace, stove, dishwasher, and clothes washer all work when used. These are all the mundane services which we take for granted until we do not have them. Be thankful that we live in a valley, Silicon Valley aka Santa Clara Valley, whose soil is fertile, weather is envied by others who come here and stay, and whose
Mediterranean climate is superb. Be thankful. This year the rain came in sequences that supported the winter vegetables planted already. Cauliflower, onions, chard, Brussels sprouts, garlic, sweet peas, lettuce, spinach and chives. All need no watering because the morning dew seems to be enough.
Despite a high unemployment rate, most people have food, shelter, and social relationships. We focus on the needy, handicapped, failing elderly, and devilish youth who present challenges of different sorts. All these can be addressed and managed if we share our abundance gracefully with thanks to an ecosystem which we enjoy and did not create. If anything, we have the power to destroy it with our abuses and negligence. Let us be thankful that all works well where we live. But, there are those who are not so fortunate at this time. Recently, along the Eastern Atlantic Seaboard of America, stretching from Florida to Massachusetts a mega storm named Hurricane Sandy interrupted the presidential election campaign….in fact all ‘normal’ social and economic activities were suspended for two days. Thankfully only about 150 individual’s lives were lost, however, millions lost all the services which we still have and take for granted. Today, some 14 days later, communities are still without electric power, reliable and accessible transportation, heating and lighting systems that provide comfortable heat and light. All services and utilities have been interrupted or destroyed by the destructive forces of Hurricane Sandy. Here in Silicon Valley, life is good; our normal activities have not been impacted much. . At our local airports,

only those flights to airports located along the Atlantic Seaboard were cancelled. We take our good life here for granted, however someday a major earthquake is scheduled to happen here. Will we be prepared? Are we thankful that it has not happened yet? Unfortunately, too many of us are not even thinking about becoming prepared. And too many of us do not think that our modest efforts amount to much. Be reminded that millions of voters who ignored all that Super-PAC propaganda (costing the ultra wealthy $380 million, are the ones who gave us the opportunity to demonstrate that our individual votes cannot be bought nor influenced by abusive monetary power. Let’s be thankful that we are intelligent enough to know what is good for the people of this community and ultimately this nation. Let us be thankful this next week on Thanksgiving Day that we are comfortable. Some of our abundance needs to be shared with those unfortunates. Unlike many other societies, Americans are altruistic. We help each other. We have organizations whose purpose and mission is to serve victims. Today, Catholic Charities, Red Cross, Salvation Army, United Way and several others are all addressing the needs of millions along the Eastern Atlantic Seaboard who, in a brief encounter with a mega storm, lost all material goods possessed. These victimized millions are experiencing misery and suffering. Be thankful it is not we by making a contribution to one of these national charities assisting them. Share your abundance thankfully

Esperanza, acción y democracia Luisa Fernanda Montero LA RED HISPANA Después de haber sido testigos y participes de las elecciones que le dieron al presidente Barack Obama la oportunidad de extender por cuatro años su estadía en la Casa Blanca, creo que es sano y necesario reflexionar sobre nuestro papel, como hispanos, en el ejercicio democrático. Es claro que el electorado hispano tiene mucho que celebrar, pues su participación fue determinante. Hemos confirmado que las eras en las que se nos podía ignorar como grupo pasaron a la historia. América ha cambiado. El entendimiento del mapa demográfico nacional, de sus fluctuaciones y particularidades llevó a los demócratas a triunfar en las urnas. El equipo del señor Obama entendió que el electorado es de colores y se negó a subestimar el papel cada vez más protagónico de hispanos, afroamericanos y asiáticos. De acuerdo con estadísticas publicadas por medios nacionales, en las elecciones del martes el voto blanco representó el 72 por ciento en las urnas. De ese porcentaje Obama recibió el 39 por ciento. Pero en contraste, se llevó el 80 por ciento de los votos no blancos. El 93 por ciento de los votos afroamericanos fueron para Obama. El presidente acaparó además el 73 por ciento de los votos asiáticos y el 71 por ciento de los votos hispanos que a propósito, y en contra de muchos pronósticos, superó el porcentaje de votos hispanos demócratas del 2008, que fue del 67 por ciento. En otras palabras, como lo refleja un reporte del Centro Hispano Pew, el 71 por ciento de los latinos votaron por el presidente Obama, mientras solo el 27 por ciento lo hizo por el
candidato republicano Mitt Romney. La misma fuente revela que los latinos conformaron en estas elecciones el 10 por ciento del electorado. En el 2008 fuimos el 9 por ciento y en el 2004 el 8 por ciento, lo que quiere decir que nuestra voz y nuestra participación van en aumento. Otro motivo para celebrar. Pero nuestros deberes con la democracia en la que vivimos no terminan con nuestro voto. Si bien es cierto que hemos contado y que somos más, también es cierto que podemos mejorar y contar más. Tenemos que lograr que nuestra participación aumente. Eso no es sólo posible, es también indispensable. Debemos seguir trabajando para que los líderes que elegimos cumplan con sus promesas y avancen en la generación de los cambios que necesitamos como sociedad. Debemos ser ciudadanos participativos. Tenemos que involucrarnos con las actividades de nuestros representantes, concejales, alcaldes, congresistas y demás funcionarios
elegidos y hacer parte de los grupos civiles de acción comunitaria y política de nuestras localidades y estados. Analistas, activistas y políticos coinciden en que este es el tiempo de la reforma migratoria. De acuerdo con Frank Sharry, presidente de America´s Voice “las placas tectónicas se están acomodando en tormo a la inmigración. El hecho de que voces líderes de movimientos conservadores se estén uniendo a los líderes republicanos en el llamado a una reforma migratoria que incluya un alivio para los más de 11 millones de inmigrantes indocumentados que hay en Estados Unidos es un gran avance que les dará la oportunidad a los republicanos de hacer lo correcto y ayudar a pasar la legislación de la reforma”. Y es que de eso se trata, de hacer lo correcto. De participar y de no olvidar que tenemos el deber y el derecho de levantar la voz cuando nuestros derechos o los de nuestros congéneres se ven violentados. Tenemos mucho por hacer. DIOVAN (DYE’-o-van) (valsartan) Tablets Read the Patient Information that comes with DIOVAN before you take it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or treatment. If you have any questions about DIOVAN, ask your doctor or pharmacist. What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN? DIOVAN can cause harm or death to an unborn baby. Talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your blood pressure if you plan to become pregnant. If you get pregnant while taking DIOVAN, tell your doctor right away. What is DIOVAN? DIOVAN is a prescription medicine called an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It is used in adults to: • lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, 6 to 16 years of age. • treat heart failure in adults. In these patients, DIOVAN may lower the need for hospitalization that happens from heart failure. • improve the chance of living longer after a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in adults. DIOVAN is not for children under 6 years of age or children with certain kidney problems. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Blood pressure is the force in your blood vessels when your heart beats and when your heart rests. You have high blood pressure when the force is too much. DIOVAN can help your blood vessels relax so your blood pressure is lower. Medicines that lower your blood pressure lower your chance of having a stroke or heart attack. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body and causes damage to the blood vessels. If high blood pressure is not treated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and vision problems. Heart Failure occurs when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to your lungs and the rest of your body. Just walking or moving can make you short of breath, so you may have to rest a lot. Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction): A heart attack is caused by a blocked artery that results in damage to the heart muscle. What should I tell my doctor before taking DIOVAN? Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including whether you: • have any allergies. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in DIOVAN. • have a heart condition • have liver problems • have kidney problems • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?” • are breast-feeding. It is not known if DIOVAN passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take DIOVAN or breast-feed, but not both. Talk with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you take DIOVAN. • have ever had a reaction called angioedema, to another blood pressure medicine. Angioedema causes swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat, and may cause difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take: • other medicines for high blood pressure or a heart problem • water pills (also called “diuretics”) • potassium supplements. Your doctor may check the amount of potassium in your blood periodically • a salt substitute. Your doctor may check the amount of potassium in your blood periodically • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen or naproxen) • certain antibiotics (rifamycin group), a drug used to protect against transplant rejection (cyclosporin) or an antiretroviral drug used to treat HIV/AIDS infection (ritonavir). These drugs may increase the effect of valsartan. Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of your medicines with you to show to your doctor and pharmacist when a new medicine is prescribed. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking any new medicine. Your doctor or pharmacist will know what medicines are safe to take together. How should I take DIOVAN? • Take DIOVAN exactly as prescribed by your doctor. • For treatment of high blood pressure, take DIOVAN one time each day, at the same time each day. • If your child cannot swallow tablets, or if tablets are not available in the prescribed strength, your pharmacist will mix DIOVAN as a liquid suspension for your child. If your child switches between taking the tablet and the suspension, your doctor will adjust the dose as needed. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time. • If you take too much DIOVAN, call your doctor or Poison Control Center, or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. What are the possible side effects of DIOVAN? DIOVAN may cause the following serious side effects: Injury or death to an unborn baby. Low blood pressure is most likely to happen if you also take water pills, are on a low-salt diet, get dialysis treatments, have heart problems, or get sick with vomiting or diarrhea. Some patients will have changes on blood tests for kidney function and may need a lower dose of DIOVAN. The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with high blood pressure include: • headache • tiredness • dizziness • stomach (abdominal) pain • flu symptoms Side effects were generally mild and brief. They generally have not caused patients to stop taking DIOVAN. Some cannot sign up for the necessary classes needed to graduate because those classes are not available. While other simply do not have the funds to pay for their education due to rising tuition cost. On Thursday, November
8, three student-planned events held at CSU East Bay, San Jose State and SF State to express the frustration that students were feeling towards the CSU. “The purpose of these three events is to bring awareness of the proposed fees to general public and to create a place for students to speak out against the new fees,” said Herlina Aguirre, a student at San Jose State.
“The board of trustees’ reasons for the fee is to stop students from abusing the system. However, we are the ones being abused. It’s impossible for many students to get the classes needed because administration keeps reducing the sections offered and sometimes only offering them every other semester.” CSU statewide tuition has continuously increased for the past 10 years. The third tier fee is if student wants to go over 18 units for a semester, they would be charged almost $200 per unit.” Students are all uncertain if they will be able to get a job after graduating due to the current struggling economy. “We are concerned like any other person. Right now, jobs are scarce,” Aguirre said.

Food Safety Tips for Holiday Feasts
With the holiday season fast approaching, CDPH Director and State Health Officer Dr. Ron Chapman reminded consumers to take special, simple precautions to prevent illness that can be caused by food due to insufficient cooking, inadequate cooling and improper food handling practices. “By following simple, easyto-remember food safety tips, consumers can ensure that holiday feasts do not become a source of foodborne disease,” said Chapman. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 48 million illnesses, 128,000 hospitalizations, and 3,000 deaths annually in the United States are related to foodborne diseases. Foodborne diseases can be prevented by simple safety
steps in the kitchen. Wash hands with soap and warm water before and after food preparation, and especially after handling raw foods. Clean all work surfaces, utensils and dishes with hot soapy water and rinse with hot water after each use. Be sure to cook foods thoroughly and to refrigerate adequately between meals. For more food safety tips, visit www.cdph.ca.gov/documents/ foodsafetytips2011.pdf. “Food safety is something we should think about every day of the year,” added Chapman. “Properly prepared and handled foods can assure us all a safe meal.” Bacteria such as Salmonella and E. coli O157:H7 are responsible for many foodborne illnesses, caused by eating contaminated foods. Contamination usually occurs as a result of poor food handling practices at the farms, factories, restau-
rants or homes. Symptoms of foodborne disease include fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea which may be bloody. Most affected people recover from foodborne illnesses within a week. Some, however, may develop complications that require hospitalization. Young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and persons with a weakened immune system are at highest risk for potentially life-threatening complications. Al igual que muchas otras medidas económicas, las donaciones de caridad en los Estados Unidos todavía deben volver a los niveles que tenían antes de la recesión. De acuerdo al Informe Anual de Estadísticas Filantrópicas de Giving USA, las contribuciones de caridad alcanzaron un total de $298.4 mil millones en 2011 – 4 por ciento por encima de 2010, pero 11 por ciento por debajo de los niveles de 2007. La gran mayoría de estas contribuciones (73 por ciento) provinieron de personas individuales, lo cual demuestra que, incluso en tiempos de dificultad económica, la gente encuentra maneras de apoyar a organizaciones que ayudan a quienes tienen menos. Debido a que la mitad de todas las donaciones se realizan entre la época de Acción de Gracias y Año Nuevo, es un buen momento para destacar algunos recaudos a tomar para que su donación cause el mayor impacto posible, tanto en la gente a la que desea ayudar como a usted en definitiva; también recordarles a las personas mayores sobre una política tributaria que fue modificada el año pasado: Requisitos para realizar contribuciones. Si usted detalla gastos en su declaración de impuestos de 2012, las contribuciones de caridad que tenga previsto deducir deben realizarse antes de fin de año. There are still a few toy registrations available.” The families began to get in line the night before and set up tents around the building. “We told them they did not have to wait all night because we would have enough food and toys for everyone,” Pecot said. “But they stayed anyway. This
was something that was very important to them.” There were a total of 174 volunteers last Friday and another 100 more are expected to come this Friday. The people that have registered so far are from Sacred Heart programs, the Washington area neighborhood and from throughout San Jose and Santa Clara county. “The only qualification for the programs is that people ask,” Pecot said. “The program is intended for low-income families who do not have money to afford their own celebrations this year.” “This morning we had 62 turkeys in our freezer and that is far short of the 4,000 we need for next week. If
people can help us by donating food. We ask that they bring it in by this Friday. Please donate frozen turkeys,” Pecot said. This is an annual event for Sacred Heart. It is one of the first actions by the founder of Sacred Heart Community Service, Louise Benson. It has expanded to the thousands that we help every year during the holidays, in addition to the food distribution that the organization operates throughout the year. Locally and internationally celebrated artist, Favianna Rodriguez lectured on advocacy through the arts at the Mexican American Plaza, last Thursday, November 8, in San Jose.
“Politics are going to be changing quite a bit,” said Tamara Alvarado, Director of Community Access and Civic Engagement for the Mexican Heritage Plaza and School of Arts and Culture. “It’s really interesting to see how artists use information, like hard facts and how it actually trickles down into their artwork and gets represented there in a way that’s still beautiful and very compelling,” said Alvarado.
The event was presented by the Latina Coalition Silicon Valley, The County of Santa Clara Women’s Policy, and the Mexican Heritage Plaza’s School of Arts and Culture. “Our legacy is really about providing Latinas with the tools, the resources the education, support, to run for office, to participate in the community on boards and on commissions, and also we educate Latinas in civic engagement,” said Elisa Orona, President of the Latina Coalition Silicon Valley.
Rodriguez also focused some of her lecture on theimportance of women’s

She used Jackie Robinson as a historical example. Robinson broke the color barrier in sports culture years before desegregation. Rodriguez also used Ellen Degeneres as an example. Rodriguez said that women are often culturally represented as either a virgin or whore. ““When she [Rodriguez] said, in culture women are either put into two categories, you’re either a virgin
or a whore, I think that women are a lot more than that, than just to be defined by their bodies,” said Hermina Ojeda, financial advisor, an attendee of the lecture. Recently, Rodriguez lectured in Montreal, Canada. Rodriguez’s artwork features issues such as immi gration, food justice, social
issues and women’s issues. “Right now my main focus is immigration, I think that the dialogue is so full, of hate and xenophobia, I think that art and culture really has an important cultural role to play in transforming that debate,” said Rodriguez. “

It seems a lot of people are against them however the number of men I see wearing them keeps increasing. Why do you think this is so? First let me tell you, I love slim jeans, the ones with straight, narrow leg; in fact, most of my pants are this cut nowadays and I’ll tell you why.

Skinny-jeans make me look long, lean and, when worn correctly, confident about my looks. However I have been also found guilty of wearing the oh-so tight skinny-jeans they might as well should’ve been jeggings and this is a problem.
Choosing the right fit of skinny-jeans is just that, the right fit. If the jeans make your muffin top overflow and they cling on to your calf muscles so tightly, then my friend these are not the right fit.
There is a very clear difference between wearing skinny-jeans that are low rise and slim at the leg, and skinny-jeans that are so tight that everyone gets to witness how you kill your future offsprings ever so slowly.
True, nowadays jeans have not only gotten skinnier at the legs but they have also gotten a lower rise, which means the distance between the crotch and the waist is shorter; all the more reasons why getting the right fit is imperative.
But let’s analyze a little more why choosing the right fit will prove beneficial

nobody’s business. So, let’s say you went ahead and bought yourself your first pair of skinny jeans because you want to stay on trend with the rest of your friends. You made sure to follow my advice and got the right fit, now what? Well, something I didn’t mention, you wear a tank top!! And I’ll tell you why. I was walking with my BFF the other day and we decided to go take a look at the tile artwork getting installed at the place we work, so we walked over and what a surprise we got. The first thing we caught in full view was not the artwork, but the installer’s butt crack-it was not a pretty sight this is also another reason why I recommend my friends and readers to keep it kempt and clean down there, but that’s another story. But seriously, do me and the rest of the world a favor and, next time you decide to wear your skinny-jeans, make sure you save us from flashing your coin slot every time you reach down to fetch that lucky penny by wearing a tank top and jeans that actually fit.
