Slow Down for Seniors
Regular participants at the Eastside Neighborhood Center located on the Alum Rock Avenue share a common concern with residents of the Mayfair area: simply walking and crossing the street are absolutely dangerous, especially at this time of the year when it starts getting darker earlier during the day. Drivers often dart across the busy arteries on the Eastside creating an environment that deters many from being able to walk safely to the corner grocery store or to the Eastside Center. A culture of jaywalking in this area has also contributed to the dangerous conditions along Alum Rock Avenue—simply put, something has to be done to make walking and crossing the street safer. Over the last decade, the demographics and land uses along the Alum Rock corridor have changed dramatically, with
many different senior housing developments and services have been established that serve older adults who are walking, biking, or taking transit to reach these establishments. At the Eastside Neighborhood Center, for example, we average 210 individuals walking in and out of the building every weekday. So, on November 2, 2012, while celebrating ‘Día de los Muertos’ (Day of the Dead),45 passionate community residents (mostly seniors) walked out to Alum Rock Avenue to raise awareness for pedestrian safety, wearing small skulls masks and with signs reading: ‘Slow Down for Seniors’, ‘Senior Zone’, & ‘Jaywalking Kills demonstrated their concern and need for action. Rita Mora, a local resident and community leader, says “I see people jaywalking every single day across Alum Rock Avenue. Some
of them are even using canes or walkers!” Joaquin Aguirre, who lives a couple of blocks from the center and always walks says that drivers are aggressive and do not have patience for pedestrians even at the signalized pedestrian crossings. For this reason, the Eastside Neighborhood Center has encouraged its senior leaders to promote a coalition with local advocacy groups such as California WALKS, AGEnts for Change, TransForm, Department of Transportation of the City of San Jose, VTA and the office of Council member Xavier Campos; in order to implement specific actions, such as more visible traffic signs, Seniors Crossing signs, better pedestrians crossing lines, enforce speed limits and the establishment of a reduced speed (25 mph) Senior Zone. AFTERMATHS OF HURRICANE SANDY

Every now and then humans are reminded that the forces of Mother Nature are immense. Such was the case with Hurricane Sandy. It extended from Florida to Connecticut impacting the entire American Atlantic seaboard. It interrupted all human activity. It destroyed many homes, roads, electric power distribution systems, etc. Incredibly, not many lives were lost, however the aggregate cost of destruction is estimated at $50 billion and rising. It is a good thing that Presidential Candidate Romney had no opportunity to ‘privatize’ emergency response efforts nor had he an opportunity to make it a responsibility of the several states. A smaller federal government would not have been able to cope with the extensive “Sandy” destruction. It was the correct decision when President Obama suspended all political campaign activities in order to focus upon the needs of the peoples impacted by Hurricane Sandy. New York City’s subway system was shut down by flooding; individual families who lost everything (homes, personal property, and could not work to ensure an income) were the proper focus of FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) which was rebuilt by the Obama Administration beginning in 2008 after the former Republican Bush Administration had placed it in the hands of an amateurish inexperienced cronies. Victims of Katrina were not properly aided by the ‘Bush FEMA’. In contrast, the Obama Administration had appointed expe-
rienced professionals who had done their jobs. FEMA was effectively activated and put to work by President Obama immediately after ‘Sandy’ happened. Our hearts, prayers and sympathies go out to the multitude of victims, many of whom need food, potable water, shelter, electric power, and fuel, especially gasoline. Many victims do not understand that it takes time to re-establish communications and transportation systems (roads & bridges, airports), electric power grids, and supply distributions systems. And, it is very important to provide for funding allocations to assist local jurisdictions (States, counties, municipalities, public utilities, health care and school districts) in coping with the sudden unexpected expenses of ‘getting back to normal’. With the onset of winter weather, warm clothing and shelter is urgently required. The Red Cross, Salvation Army, Catholic Charities, Episcopal Church Relief Fund, and many other community charities will have their emergency resources exhausted very quickly because of the immense volume of human needs. The only ‘good’ outcome of this destructive mega storm is that the construction industry and its labor force will now have much work to do when restoring infrastructure services, repairing and rebuilding homes, factories and businesses. Hopefully, the Republican ideologues will relent and become reasonable when making required approvals for emergency funding. These folks need to understand that BIG Government is not the enemy, but rather cronyism, favoritism, and greedy profiteering are totally inappropriate during these times of crisis. What is critical is the efficient, effective distribution of required emergency assistance. Ultimately, the American taxpayer will be responsible
for the funds needed to pay for all required FEMA emergency activities. It will be necessary for corporations as ‘individuals’ (per recent Supreme Court decision) to pay their fair share of taxes needed to re-establish and operate communication and transportation systems so essential and necessary for the conduct of commerce. And Congress must act quickly to close all corporate welfare loopholes NOW. The American taxpayer must insist that corporations pay their fair share of taxes used to support the infrastructure services used in the conduct of their profitable businesses. What can we learn from this disastrous event? First and foremost, individuals need to plan for and prepare for disasters that can and will happen locally. It may be the next ‘1906 Earthquake’ event, wildfire, or Sacramento Delta levee failure. Individuals are advised to review their personal disaster plans especially pre-planning personal agreements to ‘check in on neighbors’, providing for seven days of water supplies, three days of food supplies, and the location of probable emergency shelters. Plans must be formulated to minimize people’s pain and suffering. Congregations are advised to set up phone trees to check in on the status of their parishioners; plan for and establish communications systems, plan for use of their parish halls and kitchens to feed hungry victims. Also, know about the emergency plans and resources available from the County; local cities, medical facilities, police (or sheriff ), and fire departments. Remember that your taxes paid for the emergency planning by these local jurisdictions which need to address the emergency needs of all residents fairly and equitably. All these are aftermaths of Hurricane Sandy.

Luisa Fernanda Montero La Red Hispana Aquellos que contamos con la fortuna de compartir con nuestros abuelos y ver envejecer a nuestros padres, sabemos que la vida nos presenta retos que debemos superar a como de lugar y para los cuales muchas veces no estamos preparados. Como bien dice el adagio popular los años no vienen solos. Las enfermedades del alma y del cuerpo que llegan con las canas son una realidad ineludible. ¿Cómo cuidar de nuestros seres queridos adecuadamente? ¿Qué es lo correcto y qué no cuando se trata del cuidado de personas de la tercera edad? ¿Cómo debemos actuar para cumplir con nuestro papel de hijos o nietos como se espera que lo hagamos? La lista de preguntas puede ser interminable y a veces las respuestas pueden ser evasivas. Lo cierto es que de acuerdo con información revelada recientemente por AARP, organización enfocada al servicio a la tercera edad, en Estados Unidos hay más de 42 millones de personas que cuidan de un ser querido sin remuneración. Casi 1 de cada 5 de estos cuidadores es hispano. Una encuesta realizada por AARP muestra que el 63 por ciento de las personas que cuidan a un ser querido, gastan un promedio mínimo de nueve horas a la semana en su cuidado. Cerca de un tercio de estos cuidadores dice que esta labor es extremadamente difícil. Pero al mismo tiempo, una de cada 10 personas que cuidan de un ser querido afirma que hacerlo es parte de su tradición cultural y que jamás llevaría a un miembro de su familia a un hogar de ancianos, no importa cuan complejas sean sus necesidades de salud. Y es que de acuerdo
con Raquel Egusquiza, vicepresidente de Asuntos Multiculturales de AARP, muchas personas no se ven como cuidadores. “Para nosotros los hispanos, cuidar a nuestros mayores es una tradición cultural, lo vemos como nuestra obligación y lo hacemos con mucho amor”, dice. Pero la buena voluntad no anula los retos, por eso, si estamos en esa situación y debemos cuidar a una persona de la tercera edad, tenemos que prepararnos para hacerlo correctamente. Una de las recomendaciones principales de Egusquiza es que hagamos todas las preguntas. “A veces como cuidadores nos toca hacer tareas que están relacionadas con la atención médica y muchos tal vez no estamos capacitados para hacerlo”, explica y recomienda tener las conversaciones necesarias con médicos y expertos para darle a nuestros seres queridos lo que necesitan. “Muchas veces, como hispanos no hacemos las preguntas, tomamos la información y nos vamos a la casa y luego nos damos cuenta de que no entendimos bien lo que nos dijo el médico”, dice Egusquiza antes de recordar que si tenemos a cargo una persona que depende de nuestro cuidado debemos preocuparnos también por
nosotros mismos. “Tenemos que cuidarnos. A veces ponemos toda nuestra energía en cuidar a nuestro ser querido y nos abandonamos a nosotros mismos y si no estamos saludables, si no nos estamos cuidando, no vamos a poder cuidarlo”. Egusquiza anota que es importante compartir los retos que implica cuidar a nuestro ser querido, ya que debido a las responsabilidades que esto conlleva podemos sentirnos cansados, tristes, solos o aislados. “Muchas veces no hablamos de esas cosas porque nos sentimos mal y pensamos que no estamos siendo buenos hijos o buenas hijas, pero no es así, hay muchísimas personas en la misma situación y si hablamos sobre el tema y nos comunicamos con otros vamos a sentirnos apoyados”. La tarea es difícil pero no imposible. Mucho amor, un poco de paciencia y cierta información pueden hacer que el camino sea mucho más fácil de recorrer. Recuerde que no está solo. Arturo Hilario El OBSERAVDOR As we celebrate Veteran’s day on November 11th, it is important to remember all those who gave their lives, limbs, sweat and tears to fortify our country from enemies. With November also being Native American Heritage month this segment will focus on the Navajo code talkers of World War II. It was in this war that the Navajo language proved invaluable to the Allied efforts in stopping Japan and saving many U.S. lives. According to the official U.S. Marine Corps website, the use of the Navajo language came after failed attempts to create communication codes in early World War II. The Japanese were increasingly quick at breaking the American cryptographers codes and even creating fake distress calls which led to ambushes. This led to the idea of a man from California named
Philip Johnston, who as the son of a missionary lived with and understood the Navajo language. Since the Navajo language was based in the U.S., specifically the Southwestern portion, it would be near impossible for the Japanese, German, or Italian forces to decode. His proposition became a reality on the basis that the language was not written, had no alphabet, and was very difficult to learn without years of exposure. These factors led to the first unit of 29 men forming in 1942, some as young as 15, to enlist and train. This first group of 29 was the soldiers that created the code based off their Navajo language. The final number would swell to 420 marines specialized as Code Talkers, each one inheriting the responsibilities of secrecy in the use of their sacred language. The Code Talkers could relay messages in as little as 20 seconds whereas the pre-
vious methods could take up to 2 hours to decode. This 600-term code was effective and lifesaving in the Pacific theater of WWII, with the Navajo soldiers coding 800 transmissions during the first 48 hours of Iwo Jima. Their heroism and focus in the battle is honored in many sites around the world, especially in the western United States. Unfortunately this praise and acknowledgment of their efforts would go unnoticed until the declassification of the Code Talker program in the 1960’s because of the secrecy surrounding their code. As a vital tool in World War II it wasn’t until 2001 that the surviving Code Talkers were given their well-deserved Congressional Medal of Honor. La preparación para una visita al médico ayuda a que los pacientes tomen mejores decisiones sobre su salud, especialmente si el diagnóstico requiere medicamentos o una cirugía. El Gobierno ofrece varios consejos sencillos para ayudar a los pacientes que desean ir preparados a su próxima cita médica y participar más en el cuidado de su salud.
Usar intérpretes: la comunicación clara entre el doctor y el paciente es esencial para evitar malentendidos que podrían resultar en errores médicos. Los pacientes que no hablan inglés deben averiguar si hay servicios de interpretación disponibles antes de asistir a una cita médica. UC Berkeley Chancellor visits a San Jose high school

University of California Berkeley Chancellor, Robert Birgeneau, along with other top administrators visited Abraham Lincoln High School in San Jose for a school-day-long event to promote higher education on November 2.
Mariel is hoping to major in biology to become a doctor to work with cancer patients. Birgeneau’s visit is just one of many events that Abraham Lincoln High School coordinates for their students. The school is adamant about creating a college going culture for not only their student body, but also for parents. The school offers monthly workshops for both students and parents presented in English and Spanish.
“To encourage the students from whatever backgrounds they come from to apply to a university and to realize that education is going to be their pathway to a better life,” is the purpose of the visit,” said Birgeneau. UC officials will also visit other schools in California as a part of their Achieve UC program. The goal of the program is to connect with 10,000 low income students at high schools from throughout the states that have lower than expected college attendance rates. Birgeneau began his day at Abraham Lincoln by speaking with a group of seniors that have met UC admission requirements. Parents were also welcome to attend to learn about specific college readiness material that are available as well as admission requirements. Later on, Birgeneau addressed 300 students, comprised of juniors and sophomores. Students were presented with information to keep them on the college bound track. The high school participates in an educational partnership with UC Berkeley. This past summer, students who are going to be the first in their families to go to college were selected to partake in a summer school course that taught students to write personal statements. “I would say that Lincoln was chosen because of the

In the future, this partnership will expand throughout San Jose School District and become available for grades 9-12. Students were also shown various financial aid information, in particular Berkeley’s Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan. This plan ensures that students’ whose families earn under $80,000 annually will not have to pay tuition at UC Berkeley. Abraham Lincoln High School Principal, Matthew Hewitson said the event was successful because it not only provided information, but also a personal story. “I think telling some of their own stories about being first generation col-
lege students and what it takes to overcome those challenges and the kind of persistence it takes to, but what the payoff, not just for our students, but for future generation of their own families” said Hewitson.

Local National Guard Celebrates First Veteran’s Day

Cinthia Rodriguez El Observador San Jose residents have an opportunity to honor all veterans, who have served in the military, during the annual Veteran’s Day parade that will be held on November 11 in the downtown area. For those recognizing Veteran’s Day this week, many will be honored for the first time, including San Jose native Abraham Casarez.
For 29-year-old Casarez, joining the military was something he always wanted to do but it wasn’t until four years that he finally made the life changing commitment. “I’ve always been patriotic,” said Army Specialist (SPC) Abraham Casarez. “I will always love this country and appreciate everything it has done for me.”
Soon after graduating, Casarez checked out the Army for the first time but decided to play hockey, and left for Canada for a year after making it on a Canadian team. After his return he started working full time. He was barely getting by and school was not even thought about because he couldn’t afford it. With a supportive girlfriend at the time (now his wife), Casarez ultimately decided to join the military and left for basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky in October 2008. Soon after he was sent to Maryland for advanced individual training.
He eventually was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky for a little over a year before deploying to Afghanistan in July 2010. “It’s hard to explain where to begin really. Going there, your mind set has got to completely change,” said SPC Casarez. “It’s not like back home, where its casual, where you have that safety mentality. Being over there you’ve got to be a little more alert.” SPC Casarez was in Jalalabad, Afghanistan for roughly 11 months where for the most part, his company was responsible for security. He worked alongside the Afghan National Army and Afghan Security Guards. His daily 12-15 hour shifts involved searching vehicles , and people, coming in and out of the Forward Operating Base also known as the entry control point. Most people checked were Afghanis that lived in and around the area. “That was our main priority right there. Making sure that no weapons, no drugs were brought in and even to repel any attacks that were going to happen,” said SPC Casarez. SPC Casarez also recognized that the Army is predominately Caucasian and African American. He noticed a hand full of Mexicans and other Latinos but never experienced any racial prejudice.

Photo courtesy: Abraham Casarez. “Some of my best friends were from the deep south and had heavy country accents,” said SPC Casarez. “Of course we would poke fun at each other, but when it came down to it, we were a really tight knit group. There was no black, white, brown. It was just that uniform we all had on that made us a group”. Throughout his journey, Casarez began to appreciate what he had. When things don’t seem to be going his way, he reminds himself of his experiences and realizes things aren’t that big of a deal. He appreciates being able to go home to see his 2 sons, 2 daughters and his wife Timetria, who he married 2 weeks before training. He appreciates all that’s available to him. “The most memorable event was coming back from Afghanistan, just the whole flight alone, and how long it took, and how much anticipation I had,” said SPC Casarez. Different scenarios ran through his mind, one that included the plane crash-
ing or something else going wrong. He thought returning home was too good to be true. He was expecting the worst, but before he knew it, his wife and daughter received him. He remembers walking with the rest of the troop and seeing the people with flags. “I look back and realize that it was a once in a lifetime experience. Not too many people can say they’ve gone 9,000 miles away from home, stayed away from the family for so long and made it back alive,” said SPC Casarez. “I think there’s a real sense of pride in that. It’s like an accomplishment and that alone was worth it.” Today,Afghanistan veteran Casarez is an assistant manager at a Walgreen’s in Milpitas. He is also a full time student at De Anza Community College as a business administration major. He has transferred out of the Army and is in the National Guard. He will be celebrating Veteran’s Day. DIOVAN (DYE’-o-van) (valsartan) Tablets Read the Patient Information that comes with DIOVAN before you take it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This leaflet does not take the place of talking with your doctor about your medical condition or treatment. If you have any questions about DIOVAN, ask your doctor or pharmacist. What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN? DIOVAN can cause harm or death to an unborn baby. Talk to your doctor about other ways to lower your blood pressure if you plan to become pregnant. If you get pregnant while taking DIOVAN, tell your doctor right away. What is DIOVAN? DIOVAN is a prescription medicine called an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). It is used in adults to: • lower high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, 6 to 16 years of age. • treat heart failure in adults. In these patients, DIOVAN may lower the need for hospitalization that happens from heart failure. • improve the chance of living longer after a heart attack (myocardial infarction) in adults. DIOVAN is not for children under 6 years of age or children with certain kidney problems. High Blood Pressure (Hypertension). Blood pressure is the force in your blood vessels when your heart beats and when your heart rests. You have high blood pressure when the force is too much. DIOVAN can help your blood vessels relax so your blood pressure is lower. Medicines that lower your blood pressure lower your chance of having a stroke or heart attack. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body and causes damage to the blood vessels. If high blood pressure is not treated, it can lead to stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure and vision problems. Heart Failure occurs when the heart is weak and cannot pump enough blood to your lungs and the rest of your body. Just walking or moving can make you short of breath, so you may have to rest a lot. Heart Attack (Myocardial Infarction): A heart attack is caused by a blocked artery that results in damage to the heart muscle. What should I tell my doctor before taking DIOVAN? Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions including whether you: • have any allergies. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients in DIOVAN. • have a heart condition • have liver problems • have kidney problems • are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?” • are breast-feeding. It is not known if DIOVAN passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take DIOVAN or breast-feed, but not both. Talk with your doctor about the best way to feed your baby if you take DIOVAN. • have ever had a reaction called angioedema, to another blood pressure medicine. Angioedema causes swelling of the face, lips, tongue and/or throat, and may cause difficulty breathing. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Especially tell your doctor if you take: • other medicines for high blood pressure or a heart problem • water pills (also called “diuretics”) • potassium supplements. Your doctor may check the amount of potassium in your blood periodically • a salt substitute. Your doctor may check the amount of potassium in your blood periodically • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (like ibuprofen or naproxen) • certain antibiotics (rifamycin group), a drug used to protect against transplant rejection (cyclosporin) or an antiretroviral drug used to treat HIV/AIDS infection (ritonavir). These drugs may increase the effect of valsartan. Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of your medicines with you to show to your doctor and pharmacist when a new medicine is prescribed. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start taking any new medicine. Your doctor or pharmacist will know what medicines are safe to take together. How should I take DIOVAN? • Take DIOVAN exactly as prescribed by your doctor. • For treatment of high blood pressure, take DIOVAN one time each day, at the same time each day. • If your child cannot swallow tablets, or if tablets are not available in the prescribed strength, your pharmacist will mix DIOVAN as a liquid suspension for your child. If your child switches between taking the tablet and the suspension, your doctor will adjust the dose as needed. Shake the bottle of suspension well for at least 10 seconds before pouring the dose of medicine to give to your child.

• For adult patients with heart failure or who have had a heart attack, take DIOVAN two times each day, at the same time each day. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of DIOVAN and may increase the dose during your treatment. • DIOVAN can be taken with or without food. • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to your next dose, do not take the missed dose. Take the next dose at your regular time. • If you take too much DIOVAN, call your doctor or Poison Control Center, or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. What are the possible side effects of DIOVAN? DIOVAN may cause the following serious side effects: Injury or death to an unborn baby. See “What is the most important information I should know about DIOVAN?” Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension). Low blood pressure is most likely to happen if you also take water pills, are on a low-salt diet, get dialysis treatments, have heart problems, or get sick with vomiting or diarrhea. Lie down, if you feel faint or dizzy. Call your doctor right away. Kidney problems. Kidney problems may get worse if you already have kidney disease. Some patients will have changes on blood tests for kidney function and may need a lower dose of DIOVAN. Call your doctor if you get swelling in your feet, ankles, or hands, or unexplained weight gain. If you have heart failure, your doctor should check your kidney function before prescribing DIOVAN. The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with high blood pressure include: • headache • tiredness • dizziness • stomach (abdominal) pain • flu symptoms Side effects were generally mild and brief. They generally have not caused patients to stop taking DIOVAN. The most common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people with heart failure include: • dizziness • joint and back pain • low blood pressure • tiredness • diarrhea • high blood potassium Common side effects of DIOVAN used to treat people after a heart attack which caused them to stop taking the drug include: • low blood pressure • cough • high blood creatinine (decreased kidney function) • rash Tell your doctor if you get any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away. These are not all the possible side effects of DIOVAN. For a complete list, ask your doctor or pharmacist. How do I store DIOVAN? • Store DIOVAN tablets at room temperature between 59° to 86°F (15°C - 30°C). • Keep DIOVAN tablets in a closed container in a dry place. • Store bottles of DIOVAN suspension at room temperature less than 86°F (30°C) for up to 30 days, or refrigerate between 35°F - 46°F (2°C - 8°C) for up to 75 days. • Keep DIOVAN and all medicines out of the reach of children. Geovanny Sevilla of San Jose has a great sense of adventure. From sky diving to traveling, Sevilla has always wanted to do something different with his life. Following high school, Sevilla joined the United States Marine Corps and learn several skills and lessons that shaped him into the man he is today. He recently took the time to a share his story with El Observador. When did you enlist and how long did you serve? I enlisted in March 2000. However, I did not ship out to boot camp until September 18, 2000. I served for four active years and was on standby for another four years (inactive service). It was an eight-year contract. Why did you decide to enlist?

Según el sondeo Latino Decisions e ImpreMedia, el respaldo de los hispanos a Obama ascendió esta elección al 75 por ciento, al superar el 67 por ciento que obtuviera en 2008 y 72 por ciento obtenido por Bill Clinton, el máximo apoyo alcanzado por un demócrata.En tanto, el republicano Mitt Romney logró uno de los índices más bajos de apoyo hispano que el Partido Republicano ha obtenido con el 23 por ciento, sólo superado por el 21 por ciento alcanzado por el entonces candidato Bob Dole. I enlisted in the armed service for several reasons. As
the eldest of four boys, I did not want my parents to work harder to send me to college and the military promised to help pay for college with the GI Bill for school. What country were you sent to? In February of 2003, I was shipped out to Kuwait for Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). We invaded Iraq the following month in March. I returned to the States in July during Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). What type of work did you do in that country? While in the Middle East, I was part of Security Convoys Unit. We ensured the safety of convoys trekking through the cities of Iraq leading towards Bagdad. Life was difficult and danger lurked at every corner. Fortunately, my platoon and I made it back alive and we appreciate life that much more now.
What did you enjoy best about being in the military? I enjoyed the camaraderie between Marines, earning the title of Marine, and all the essential skills needed for me to become the man I am today. What did you learn from it? I learned responsibility. As a young man fresh out of high school, I was already living away from my family and starting a whole new chapter in my life. Sometimes life would be tough in the Corps, but that just made life that much easier anywhere else. Any other family members in the military? Not yet, but I’m hoping my youngest brother joins the Navy. Do you still keep in touch with the people that you served with? Yes, usually through Facebook and an occasional phone call.

Mexíco NOTIMEX De positiva calificó el connotado historiador Miguel León-Portilla (1926) la reunión que el presidente electo Enrique Peña Nieto sostuvo hace varios días con un grupo de intelectuales, entre ellos él. Entrevistado luego de recibir la medalla “Anáhuac en Humanidades” de la Universidad Anáhuac, campus norte, dijo que en dicha reunión propuso a Peña Nieto envié una iniciativa de Ley para reformar el artículo segundo constitucional, a fin de dar personalidad jurídica a los “14 millones de indígenas” que existen en el país. “Fue una reunión con personas que no somos políticos, no soy ni del PAN, ni del PRI, ni del PRD ni de nada, soy de la UNAM siempre, pero cuando me invitaron pensé que era una oportunidad buena para exponerle mis preocupaciones respecto al mundo indígena” dijo el también filósofo y antropólogo. Reconocido como una autoridad en materia del pensamiento y la literatura náhuatl, recordó que dicho
artículo de la Carta Magna se reformo en 1992, y dice que México tiene como raíz más honda, la de los pueblos indígenas, que ellos tienen el derecho de ser escuchados y el gobierno de escucharlos, pero no tienen personalidad jurídica. “¿Cómo puedo exigir yo el derecho de ser escuchado si no soy nadie?, entonces, la primera cosa que le propuse cuando llegue a la Presidencia de la República es que envié a las cámaras, una propuesta de Ley que reconozca a los pueblos indígenas de una personalidad. “Yo le dije cómo. En primer lugar, hay zonas indígenas, en segundo lugar que ahí se hable una lengua materna, y tercer lugar que sean ellos que se dice indígenas y los demás se lo crean”, explicó. Recordó que los indios no tienen personalidad, “la tuvieron en la época colonial y la perdieron a raíz de la Independencia, entonces están desamparados, siguen siendo objeto de desprecio, de ignorancia, cuando en realidad son la raíz más honda. “Luego le dije que el gobierno de México, en gene-
ral, ha asumido una actitud proteccionista, paternalista y creo que ya es tiempo de que se reconozca esos pueblos como lo son, de hecho, capaces de abrirse camino a la vida”, señaló. El autor de “La visión de los vencidos” y “Filosofía náhuatl” lo que propuso en la reunión “no es nada nuevo”, y añadió que “eso fue lo que le dije y eso puede y debe usted hacerlo”. Dijo que la respuesta de Peña Nieto fue interesante y añadió que el presidente electo los volvería a convocar, “para ver cómo iba la cosa. Entonces, si se trata de estas cosas sí; si es de otras no me interesa”, concluyó. Fall is here now and in full swing, however it is hard to tell with the bipolar weather that we’re having, but that is no reason enough not to sport the latest trends this schizophrenic season brings us. La banda de pop tenía muchos seguidores en México desde que debutó en 1982. Este concierto estaba lleno y había fanáticos bailando al son de la música. La banda, junto con sus amigos músicos, tocaron canciones favoritas como “Lo Noto”, “Huellas en el Bajamar”, “Te Necesito” y “Te Quiero” a la multitud de 10.000 aficionados. La banda proclamó que estaban contentos de estar en el Distrito Federal después de una espera de tres años. La canción final que jugaron antes de salir fue “Visite Nuestro Bar”, que se dedico a “todos los borrachos” en el edificio. The San Jose Downtown Residents Association (SJDRA) announced a new partnership with San Jose State University’s CommUniverCity program to launch a unique project that will encourage local merchants to use popular forms of technology and social media to offer “flash” specials and last minute deals designed to entice more traffic and increase revenues without adding to their marketing expenses. “Not only will we be able to stay on top of the many things that are going on downtown, merchants will have a completely free way to offer ‘act now’ specials that couldn’t otherwise be advertised,” says SJDRA president Kymberli Brady. “While designed for residents, everyone who lives, works and plays downtown will be able to use it. No more need for discount cards or coupons. Just scan the code for real-time offers posted by the merchants
More importantly, Brady adds that its could serve as a “one-stop shop” for other agencies such as Team San Jose, LiveSV and the San Jose Downtown Association (SJDA) to post their events, links and other news that will drive visitors to their apps and websites for more unified outreach. “The possibilities are endless,” Brady adds, “and the merchants hold all the cards. That’s the beauty of this. We want to help them get their message out there so we can get more people out enjoying what Downtown San Jose has to offer.”
According to Brady, the campaign will use new QR Code technology that will link to its Facebook page, where merchants will have complete control over what they offe and when simply by posting their specials. Arts organizations will be able to market same-day discounted tickets that could make the difference between a good crowd and a sell-out, while restau-
