POOREST FAMILIES AT RISK OF LOSING SNAP BENEFITS

E

T

he new Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, has just a few days to overcome two of the biggest challenges to his leadership. On the one hand, Johnson must convince his undisciplined caucus to accept a draft resolution that keeps the federal government open beyond the Nov. 17 deadline. On the other hand, and no less important, he must approve the Farm Bill on which not only farm-

Figures from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) show that 37% of SNAP recipients are non-Hispanic white, 26% are African American, 16% are Hispanic, 3% are Asian and 2% are Native American. But despite its undoubted importance, the renewal of the law faces an uncertain future. The most radical Republicans seek at all costs to toughen the requirements to receive SNAP benefits. Most members of the ultraconservative Freedom Caucus did not sign the letter sent to Johnson, nor did most House Republicans. As they did in 2018, in the previous Farm Bill debate, Democrats strongly oppose making SNAP eligibility criteria more restrictive. But this is not the only difference. There are still no agreements on two central aspects, such as the level of crop subsidies and financing to compensate farmers affected by climate change. Rudy Arredondo, president and founder of Latino Farmers & Ranchers International Inc., which represents more than 75,000 Latino farmers and ranchers, maintains that there must be an evaluation of the acres that will not be able to be planted due to climatic factors and support those farmers. With just a few weeks of legislative time to iron out differences, an agreement to renew the Country Law seems difficult. What is the most likely scenario? In the opinion of Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, the most likely is the approval of an extension of the 2018 Farm Law before December 31. “If this is not done, we will have chaos,” he warns. And perhaps one of the most dramatic aspects of this chaos is that more than 40 million low-income people are left without food support as a result of the ideological fights of the Republicans in the House of Representatives.

6 CONSEJOS PARA UNA ALIMENTACIÓN SALUDABLE (¡Y DELICIOSA!) DURANTE LOS DÍAS FESTIVOS Por Laura Clapper, MD, directora médica de CCA Health California

E

DESPITE HIGH BLACK MATERNAL DEATH RATE, CALIFORNIA HOSPITALS IGNORED TRAINING ABOUT BIAS IN CARE

Black women are three times more likely than any other women to die during or immediately after pregnancy. California lawmakers passed a law in 2019 requiring hospitals to train labor and delivery staff on unconscious bias in medicine.

ditional regulations to strengthen the law, including setting clear deadlines for compliance, designating a state agency to enforce the law and introducing penalties for noncompliance.

ore than two and a half years after a law took effect requiring maternity care staff to complete racism in medicine training, only 17% of hospitals were in compliance, according to an investigation published by the state Department of Justice Friday.

Former state Sen. Holly Mitchell, the Los Angeles Democrat who authored the bill, said “clearly more must be done” to implement the policy.

The training matters, Attorney General Rob Bonta and others said during a press conference, because of the state’s persistently high death rates among Black mothers. Though California is often looked at as a national model for improving maternal outcomes, Black women are still far more likely than others to die during pregnancy. They account for only 5% of pregnancies in the state but make up 21% of pregnancy-related deaths, according to the California Department of Public Health. The mortality rate for Black infants is also three times higher than for white infants and nearly 1.5 times higher than for Pacific Islander babies, the second highest mortality rate, state data shows. Investigations into the cause of all pregnancy-related deaths by the California Department of Public Health determined that more than half are preventable.

“It is my full expectation that every hospital across L.A. County and across the state join in making sure that their staff take the training,” said Mitchell, who is now a Los Angeles County supervisor. “We are simply asking them to follow the law.”

No hospitals were in compliance when the department began its investigation in 2021, and not a single employee had completed training.

Pregnancy and Childbirth Act four years ago in an effort to reverse the vast disparities in maternal deaths among Black women, who are three times more likely than any other race to die during or immediately after pregnancy. The law requires hospitals and other facilities to train perinatal care providers on unconscious bias in medicine and racial disparities in maternal deaths. It took effect in January 2020.

“We need to listen to this data. It’s screaming at us to do something,” Bonta said. “Listen to these women and make substantial transformative change before another patient is hurt, or worse.”

According to the department’s investigation report, about 76% of more than 200 hospitals surveyed had begun training employees by August 2022 but had not completed training. Two hospitals had not fully trained any staff, and 13 did not provide the department with any information. “Nearly a third of facilities to which DOJ reached out began training only after DOJ contacted them, suggesting that DOJ’s outreach caused compliance in many cases,” the report states. It is well-documented that racism in health care settings contributes to poor outcomes. Black women in California consistently report poor experiences with medical professionals during pregnancy, including mistreatment because of their “race, age, socioeconomic class, sexuality, and assumed or actual marital status,” according to a recent research review and report by the California Department of Public health.

They also struggle to convince providers that they are in pain and report mistreatment when advocating for their health during pregnancy. A national survey from 2016 revealed half of white medical students and residents believed false and debunked myths about the biological differences between white and Black patients. Those who endorsed the beliefs were more likely to dismiss patients’ pain and make inaccurate treatment decisions.

“What is so deeply offensive about that is it is within our power to change,” Mitchell said.

Implicit bias training is the “bare minimum” of what health professionals can do to improve outcomes, said Assemblymember Akilah Weber, a Democrat from La Mesa and a medical doctor. Research also shows maternal and infant health disparities among Black women and babies persist regardless of patients’ education or income levels. Celebrities like Serena Williams and Beyoncé have spoken out about their near-death experiences during childbirth. Recent maternal deaths in Los Angeles Earlier this year, the deaths of two Black women, Bridgette Cromer and April Valentine, in childbirth shook Los Angeles. Valentine’s death led to a state investigation and a $75,000 fine levied against Centinela Hospital Medical Center where her daughter was delivered via C-section. The investigation stated the hospital “failed to prevent the deficiencies…that caused, or are likely to cause, serious injury or death” to Valentine, , including repeated failure to take steps to prevent blood clots, a common pregnancy risk, even when Valentine complained of feeling heaviness in her leg, numbness and leg swelling. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined she died from a blood clot that traveled from her leg into her lungs. Centinela announced its intent to close the maternity ward permanently days after Valentine’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit. The maternity ward, which delivered more than 700 babies last year, closed Wednesday. In a GoFundMe post, Cromer’s family said they did not have autopsy results yet but noted that she was readmitted into the operating room after birth with major bleeding before dying. Gabrielle Brown, an advocate with Black Women for Wellness, said Centinela’s maternity ward closure is “a stark reminder of how healthcare disparities persist in our society.” “It reminds us of the implicit biases that have subtly influenced healthcare decisions, ultimately leading to an immense reduction in the accessibility and quality of care for many members of our community,” Brown said.

A group called Reform California, run by conservative radio host Carl DeMaio, is sponsoring the initiative but did not respond to requests for comment. Its website cites concerns about voter fraud. Jonathan Mehta Stein, executive director at California Common Cause, said cases of voter impersonation are infinitesimal - and voter ID requirements hurt the approximately 10% of Californians who don't have a driver's license or state ID card. "You would be solving a 'problem' that doesn't really exist," said Stein. "So you're not gaining much. But you are putting barriers in front of young voters, older voters, voters with disabilities and low-income voters. The tradeoffs are not worth it."

The proposal would also add requirements around maintenance of voter rolls - verification of ballot signatures and audits of the election process. California already has extensive security measures in place to match voters' addresses and signatures with those on file, and noncitizens cannot vote.

Stein said a bill on voter ID is introduced in almost every legislative session. "It never goes anywhere, and because it's bad policy, and not good for voters," said Stein. "And I think the proponents are sick of losing in the Legislature and have decided to take this to the ballot." Voters have put Democrats in control of California's executive and legislative branches. The Reform California website states that socalled "election integrity" measures are necessary to achieve backers' long-term goal to retake power at the state level. os partidarios de una iniciativa electoral propuesta para exigir una identificacion gubernamental para votar acaban de obtener la aprobacion estatal para comenzar a recolectar firmas.

COLLEGE APPLICATION SEASON IS HERE. SO IS THE STRUGGLE TO FIND OUT IF AI WROTE STUDENTS’ ESSAYS With the growing use of AI, campus officials are trying to set clear guidelines for college application essays.

Carolyn Jones & Mikhail Zinshteyn CalMatters

Common App, has no formal policy on AI use in admissions essays, though its director of admissions thinks it’s “not very good at nuance, personalization or helping a student communicate in their authentic voice, which is what we’re really looking for when we evaluate an application,” wrote Adam Sapp in an email.

A

rtificial intelligence might be the new frontier in technology, but Toby Reed, a senior at Fremont High in Oakland, has no doubts about whether to harness its powers — at least on his college application essay.

“The value of a 350-word response on topics like leadership, resiliency, or creativity may be diminished if it doesn’t directly reflect a student’s own experiences,” noted UC Riverside’s director of undergraduate admissions, Veronica Zendejas, in email.

“No. It’s blatantly plagiarizing,” said Reed, who, like hundreds of thousands of other California seniors, is in the process of applying to colleges. “It’s bad enough stealing content, but with ChatGPT you’re not even stealing from a real person.” In the first application season since generative AI tools like ChatGPT have become widely available, colleges and high schools are grappling with the ethical and practical implications of text-writing technology. “We can’t pretend it away,” said Josh Godinez, a high school counselor at Centennial High in Riverside County and former president of the California Association of School Counselors. Students are using AI on their college application essays, whether grownups like it or not, he said. Most school leaders and college experts that CalMatters interviewed agree that students who rely exclusively on AI to write their college application essays are violating academic integrity rules and are subject to having their applications rejected. But there’s plenty of nuance in the details, and guidelines can be vague and confusing. “It’s bad enough stealing content, but with ChatGPT you’re not even stealing from a real person.” -TOBY REED, SENIOR AT FREMONT HIGH IN OAKLAND The California Department of Education encourages districts to explore the potential benefits of AI, particularly in computer science curriculum or as part of broader lessons in media literacy. But it leaves decisions about AI use in classrooms up to school districts — many of which have policies prohibiting plagiarism, which could include the use of AI for writing essays, for example. That means most students applying to college now are at least familiar with the ethics of using technology to write their essays for them. “We want our students to understand how AI works and how to leverage it, but also understand the ethical implications,” said Katherine Goyette, the state education department’s computer science coordinator. “AI is here. We need to teach students and educators how to learn with it, and learn about it.” And even if colleges prohibit essays whose provenance is generative AI, nabbing a student for robotic plagiarism is an imprecise science. One scholar in a Wired article noted that even a 1% rate of false-positives is inexcusable, because for every 1,000 essays, that’s 10 students who could be accused of an academic theft they didn’t commit.

written statement. The school turned down CalMatters’ request to interview an admissions official.

JR Gonzalez, chief technology officer for the Los Angeles County Office of Education, noted that no AI detection tool is 100% accurate. And AI itself can occasionally produce wrong information.

The University of California and its nine undergraduate campuses permit students to use generative AI in admissions essays in limited form, such as “advice on content and editing,” but “content and final written text must be their own,” its written policy states. Unlike the state’s private campuses, UC operates its own admissions portal.

Varying policies on AI in admissions essays Common App, the college application tool used by 1,000 institutions nationwide, in August included a restriction on “substantive” AI use in college admissions applications as part of its fraud policy. The addition was a response to feedback from member colleges and an internal desire to “keep up with the changing technologies,” a spokesperson wrote. What does “substantive” mean? Common App’s CEO, Jenny Rickard, said there’s no definition, and that’s intentional, writing in an email that “we will evaluate the totality of the circumstances to determine if a student truly intended to misrepresent content generated by AI technology as their own work.” Common App doesn’t determine whether students are being honest — that’s up to the member colleges to figure out. But if Common App concludes that a student plagiarized, that student’s account may be terminated and Common App will notify the campuses to which the student applied, Rickard wrote. University of Southern California, which uses the Common App exclusively to process its admissions and is a top choice for Common App applicants, is less lenient. “Were we to learn that an applicant had used generative AI for any part of their application, their application would be immediately rejected,” the university said in a

But the stern words lack teeth. The highly selective private university isn’t employing any AI-detection software, a spokesperson wrote.

But the UC Office of the President, which turned down a CalMatters request for an interview on the topic, wouldn’t specify how it detects whether students relied on AI tools to write their essays. “UC conducts regular screenings to verify the integrity of the responses, may request authentication of the content or writing as the student’s, and will take action when it is determined that the integrity of the response is compromised,” including plagiarism through AI, its guidance states. A UC spokesperson, Ryan King, suggested students are wasting their effort by relying on AI generative tools, writing “it would be more work for them to try building a strong ChatGPT prompt than it would be to develop their own original responses to the (essay questions).” Campuses that responded to CalMatters indicated that while generative AI can be a source to spitball ideas, structure an outline and generally shape the essay-writing process, the tools are no match for human voices to communicate nuance and how an applicant’s life experiences tie into the various essay questions. There’s also limited room for the banal writing AI tools typically generate — the Common App essay response can’t exceed 650 words while UC’s four essays are capped at 350 words each. Pomona College, a highly selective institution that accepts applications through the

“We want our students to understand how AI works and how to leverage it, but also understand the ethical implications.” -KATHERINE GOYETTE, COMPUTER SCIENCE COORDINATOR AT THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Zendejas offers practical tips for crafting anxiety-inducing essay responses, telling prospective students to “write in clear, straightforward prose, much like they would in an interview or a conversation. This approach should alleviate concerns about the need for AI tools to assist in writing their responses.” University of San Francisco, another Common App partner, won’t use AI detection software for college applications because the campus doesn’t think it’s necessary. The full picture of a student’s fit on campus comes into view from their grades, letters of recommendation and other aspects of the holistic application review, said the university’s associate provost who oversees undergraduate admissions, Sherie GilmoreCleveland, in an interview. Gilmore-Cleveland said after a student’s high school academics, the essay is the second-most important factor in a student’s application at University of San Francisco. But in her 20-plus years of working in admissions, she’s never encountered a student with weak grades and a strong essay who was admitted. Other admissions officers have also questioned how much of a boost an essay gives an applicant. However, a student with good grades and an awful essay may be rejected from the university if they’re trying to apply for a competitive major. The student may be rerouted to another major, or just be rejected outright — it’s a case-by-case basis, Gilmore-Cleveland said. Using generative AI is easy But not everyone applying to college with an essay component is a good writer, said Jeffrey Hancock, a Stanford University professor of communication. “They’ll probably find that they do better when they use a tool like this,” Hancock said of applicants using generative AI.

Hancock said students with no coding experience can train a tool like ChatGPT, especially the latest premium version, to generate strong essays, in a process known as fine-tuning. First, an applicant pastes essays of students who were admitted to top colleges into an AI tool. The student tells the tool to analyze the essays for positive traits. Then, the applicant pastes essays from students who were rejected from schools and prompts the AI to look for patterns to avoid. Along the way, the student confirms the AI tool is understanding the task. “Do you understand the difference between the two, and it would say ‘yes, I’ve found this pattern versus that pattern,’” Hancock said. Finally, the student prompts the tool to generate a rough draft based on those findings. Hancock co-published a peer-reviewed study in March showing that humans can detect AI-written work about as accurately as predicting a coin toss — meaning poorly. And “as you build detectors, the AI gets better,” Hancock said, adding that he anticipates an arms race between detection and evasion. And while generative AI may be the latest cause célèbre, it’s part of a long line of help students have been able to access for decades. Teachers, counselors and family members offer students writing support. So can pricey tutors, who — even if they’re ethically opposed to writing an essay for a student — can still provide tailored coaching in a way that’s inaccessible to most lowincome students. “As you build detectors, the AI gets better,” Hancock said, adding that he anticipates an arms race between detection and evasion. The debate over AI use in college applications reflects a larger trend in classrooms. Educators are deciding how to adapt to artificial intelligence, especially as it improves and becomes more ubiquitous. Some districts have yet to address the issue, while others have adopted comprehensive guidelines promoting its benefits and warning of its dangers. The Los Angeles County Office of Education held an AI symposium last summer for hundreds of educators, and is crafting guidelines for the 80 districts it oversees. Despite AI’s obvious risks, the most obvious benefits, according to Gonzalez, are for teachers and administrators: creating lesson plans, making master schedules, tracking student achievement and attendance, writing grant applications and even crafting state-mandated accountability plans. Christine Elgersma, senior editor for learning content strategy at Common Sense Media, a research and advocacy nonprofit, suggests that schools move forward thoughtfully as they create AI policies and include students in the discussion. Students should understand the ethical implications, the biases that exist in AI algorithms, the potential for misinformation and the privacy risks. “Since college essays are so personal, it brings up a question of privacy,” Elgersma said. “For example, pieces of your story could turn up folded into another student’s

AI-generated essay.” Students should also understand the value of learning to write, and think, independently, “developing your own ideas and expressing yourself in words, with clarity and profundity and a flair that’s your own,” she said. Tara Sorkhabi, a senior at Monte Vista High School in Danville, said her teachers have been clear in discouraging, if not outright banning, the use of AI for writing assignments. While Sorkhabi has found AI useful in studying chemistry, for example, she does not believe students should use it for college application essays. “Admissions officers wouldn’t know who they’re accepting. They’d basically be admitting a bot,” she said. She also thinks that allowing AI in college application essays is unfair to students who toil for weeks perfecting their own essays without the help of machines. Reed, the Fremont High senior, said students who over-rely on AI for writing assignments are ultimately cheating themselves, because they’re not learning valuable skills like research, expression and critical thinking. “It’s your future,” Reed said, noting that students should take advantage of opportunities to expand their minds, not use shortcuts. “You can’t plagiarize in school. You can’t do it at work. People like AI because it’s quick and easy, but it’s not good.”

"No.

ollege students pay upwards of $1,100 a year for books and supplies, so many schools are working to try to reduce the burden. A study from U.S. Public Interest Research Group found the cost of course materials has increased at three times the rate of inflation since the 1970s, due mostly to lack of competition in the college publishing industry. Cailyn Nagle, open education resources program manager for the Michelson 20 Million Minds Foundation, co-authored the report. "We see 65% of students skip buying a textbook due to cost, and 21% of students skip buying access codes because they can't afford it," Nagle reported. Many campus libraries lend out textbooks, and bookstores sell used books and facilitate rentals or digital downloads. Students look for deals online. And schools are also moving toward an Open Educational Resource model where courses use textbooks, journals and other materials available free online. In 2021, the State of California allocated more than $115 million to help schools promote the transition. Leslie Lange Kennedy, assistant vice chancellor of academic technology services at California State University, said the school works to help students get the materials they need. "We work really hard to help faculty become aware of zero-cost course materials," Lange Kennedy explained. "And to help them with the time and effort that it takes to migrate their courses utilizing a free or low-cost material."

Recently, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 607, which requires colleges and universities to disclose the costs of their courses ahead of time.

MORE WORKING CALIFORNIANS SLIPPED INTO POVERTY AS PANDEMIC AID EXPIRED

alifornia’s poverty rate climbed in the first quarter of 2023, the latest quarter measured by the Public Policy Institute of California. Poverty increased from 11.7% in 2021 to 13.2%, the institute said, with 5 million people living in poverty.

Safety net programs played a major role in recent shifts in the state’s poverty rate. During the pandemic, the federal government expanded such social safety net programs as tax credits for families with children and emergency food assistance, which lowered poverty rates nationwide. Poverty rates jumped when those expansions expired late last year and earlier this year, said Caroline Danielson, a researcher at the institute. “We’re seeing an uptick in poverty. That’s not because the economy is worse– it’s actually improving— but it’s because we temporarily, using federal funds mainly, had expansions of safety net programs,” she said. About 3.2 million more Californians would be in poverty without any safety net programs, Danielson said. Expanded CalFresh food assistance alone kept 1.1 million people out of poverty in the first quarter of 2023, when that expansion expired, the report said. Latinos make up about half of Californians living in poverty, despite being 39.7% of the population. By comparison, about 10% of white Californians live in poverty. Child poverty leaped from 9% in 2021 to about 14% in early 2023, largely due to the expiration of social safety net expansions. In 2019, the child poverty rate was about 18%. Senior Californians also experienced a higher poverty rate at 15%, compared to about 13% for adults ages 18 to 64. Poverty and high living costs Poverty rates also varied significantly by region, with San Diego and Los Angeles counties experiencing the highest poverty rates, about 15%, while the Central Valley and Sierra counties experienced the lowest, about 11%. A big reason for that, Danielson said, is the high cost of living in Southern California counties and demographic differences among the regions. Los Angeles and San Diego counties have high populations of Latino and immigrant communities that experience higher rates of poverty. The Public Policy Institute’s California Poverty Measure includes such things as the value of government assistance and a region’s cost of living, which the federal poverty rate does not consider.

Social safety net programs make less of a dent on poverty in counties with higher costs of living. That’s because poor Californians in these counties may earn incomes too high for federal poverty thresholds and so don’t qualify for as much aid. For example, researchers found that social safety net programs reduced poverty the most in inland areas, where poverty rates are lower. Without the programs, poverty would be 14.4 points higher in the Central Valley and Sierra region, but only 4.3 points higher in the Bay Area, the report shows. The Public Policy Institute looked closer at working Californians and found that most Californians in poverty are working and even full-time employment didn’t keep some residents from poverty. More than 8 in 10 of California’s 1.3 million working poor were employed year-round; nearly half worked full time and 37% part time. Part-time workers had higher poverty rates than full-time workers. Workers in service industries — janitors, landscapers, cosmetologists, housekeepers and other service jobs — and workers in agriculture tended to experience poverty at higher rates than other labor sectors. People in building and grounds maintenance, for example, have a 20% poverty rate, followed by workers in food preparation and service who endure a 16% poverty rate. The report also highlights how the working poor spend their money. They cohabit with family members to make ends meet; 82% of Californians in poverty live with other adult family members. People use most of their earnings for everyday expenses and bills. On average, working poor adults make $28,000 annually. Danielson said this underscores the need for policies that increase wages and improve training and educational opportunities for the working poor.

he explosion of U.S. craft breweries and cideries in recent years has meant that beer and hard cider drinkers have more eco-friendly options than ever. But what exactly constitutes an eco-friendly brew? Local sourcing, organic ingredients, sustainable farming practices, energyefficient machinery and operations, water conservation, recyclable or biodegradable packaging and the use of renewable energy are a few of the hallmarks. While a given brand doesn’t have to employ all of them to market itself as eco-friendly, the more it can toe the green line from farm to table, the better. Consumers can start their research online as to which beers and ciders are both sustainable and available locally, and then continue with real world taste-testing at a bar, restaurant or at home. At the grocer, check out the labels on available beers and ciders to see if any carry one or more sustainability-oriented certification labels, such as USDA Organic, Fair Trade or Salmon-Safe. Some of the most popular eco-friendly beers include Peak Organic’s Fresh Cut Pilsner and Super Juice DIPA, Eel River’s Organic IPA, Wicked Weed Appalachia Session IPA, Ninkasi Brewing’s Cold Fermented Lager, Hopworks Urban Brewery’s HUB Lager, Samuel Smith’s Organic Chocolate Stout, Lawson's Finest Liquids Kingdom Trails IPA, Sierra Nevada Dankful Generously Hoppy IPA, Alaskan Brewing Company Icy Bay IPA, Great Lakes Brewing Company Burning River Pale Ale, Cantillon’s Gueuze 100% Lambic Bio and Brasserie Dupont’s Foret Organic Saison, Fort George Brewery’s Vortex IPA, Full Sail’s Oregon Original Amber, Brewdog’s Italian Pale Ale, Rhinegeist Brewing Fruited Sour, Fairstate Brewing’s Smell Test Hazy IPA, Toast Ale’s Session IPA, Brewery Vivant’s Tee Patrol, New Belgium’s Voodoo Ranger, Humboldt Brewing’s Black Xantus, and Upslope Brewing’s Pumpkin Ale.

ing the future of the beer and cider industries in the U.S. Whether you like beer or hard cider a lot or a little, you can do your part to help out the planet by considering just who is making it and whether or not they are taking the environment into account in the process.

While these premium beer and cider options represent a small piece of the overall U.S. market, consumers are increasingly upgrading from light beers to these products as they learn more about them. Market research firm International Wine & Spirit Research (IWSR) reports that while “standard-and-below” beer volumes are expected to continue declining in the U.S. at a rate of about five percent a year (mostly thanks to Americans increasingly turning to spirits-based hard seltzers instead), volumes of “premium-and-above” beers and ciders—like those mentioned above—are expected to increase some three percent annually, thus represent-

ONCE UPON A STUDIO: HOW WALT DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS HELPED BRING TOGETHER 543 BELOVED CHARACTERS ONTO ONE SCREEN FOR NEW SHORT Writer-Directors Dan Abraham and Trent Correy Join Us To Talk About Their Once Secret Project To Celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Walt Disney Animation Studios

Arturo Hilario El Observador

Well, when we were making this at night and on weekends and nobody knew about it and all that type of stuff, we were being sort of realistic with ourselves and saying, this might not go anywhere because we have CG and hand drawn animation altogether and these live action plates, and there's a lot to say 'no' to. There's over 500 characters we're asking for here.

Blending all-new hand-drawn and CG animation, the short looks at what happens when Mickey and Minnie decide to get the gang together to take a 100th anniversary photo with their friends at the animation studio, including many beloved characters sharing the screen for the first time ever. Recently we had the opportunity to speak with the Abraham and Correy, who gave us some insight into how they came up with the idea for the short, the work it took to get it made and what they hope audiences take away from seeing their favorite characters once again. Once Upon A Studio is now streaming on Disney+. Where did the original inspiration come from? Where did that spark of idea come to create this secret project? Trent Correy Yeah, it really just started [from] working on a short together, Once Upon a Snowman, and we said, "let's work together again." It started there from a very sincere place of how do we work together again? And then we looked ahead and we're like, "hey, the hundred years coming up, we're the only studio that can say they're turning 100. What can we do? What if we pitch something together?" So it started as that, and we just started sharing inspiration, why we wanted to get into animation ourselves, why we wanted to work for Disney. And it quickly snowballed into this idea of all the characters jumping out of the artwork within the studio. Was the process for creating this short similar, more difficult than your previous work, knowing it had to do with giant roster of characters and being filmed in the studio? Dan Abraham

Dan Abraham I sort of look at it as a thank you to all the people that have been at the studio before us and all the work that they did that sort of became a part of me. I know how much joy these characters have brought to the world. I'm right there with everybody else and Trent. So we wanted to pay homage to all the creators and the artists and all the people that had worked at the studio prior to us, but also as a thank you to all the fans, too, for embracing these characters the way that we have. What do you hope that people take away from the short? Trent Correy I hope it brings eight minutes of joy to people. I hope people can watch this in their living room together as a family and just bring joy, a smile and a laugh. That's why we do what we do. Dan Abraham It's such a sincere love letter to the medium of animation and to the studio and to the fans that I hope people realize the importance of just sincerity in whatever you're doing in life and wherever you are, and just that sincerity is necessary. Sometimes things get very cynical in that world. Trent Correy Because in the making of this, we shared our stories of how we wanted to work at Disney because we saw things like this, and if one person watches this and wants to be an animator one day or a story artist or come work at Disney, I'd be thrilled. That'd be the cherry on top.

Oración a San Martín Caballero

‘GOD AWFUL’ — NEW POLL FINDS ARAB “MUY HORRIBLE” - UNA NUEVA ENCUESTA REVELA QUE EL APOYO ÁRABE-ESTADOUNAMERICAN SUPPORT FOR BIDEN IDENSE A BIDEN SE ESTÁ DESPLOMANDO PLUMMETING A new poll finds a majority of Arab Americans are turning against Biden in the aftermath of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

upport for President Biden among Arab Americans has plummeted in the wake of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, according to a new survey released by the non-partisan Arab American Institute. The survey of 500 Arab Americans found a 42% decrease in those who say they approve of the president’s performance, a “shocking” decline,” according to pollster James Zogby. “The dissatisfaction with President Biden is really quite significant,” noted Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, which has been polling Arab Americans for more than three decades. “His numbers are dangerously low. More so than I have ever seen for a Democratic candidate.” Of the approximately 3.5 million Arab American voters in the US, many are concentrated in key swing states like Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania, states that played decisive roles in Biden’s 2020 election win and will again be critical in 2024. Down from 59% to 17% Among the poll’s top line findings: just 17% of respondents expressed support for Biden, down from 59% in 2020, while only 23% identified as Democrat, compared to 32% who identified as Republican. That’s a monumental shift in party affiliation from 2016, when Democrats outnumbered Republicans by two-to-one. And for the first time ever Independents outnumbered Democrats. “I don’t know how you get that back easily,” noted Zogby in an online briefing announcing the findings. “I don’t expect them to be voting for Trump, but it will take something to get them to the polls in the first place.” Zogby explained that as recently as April, Arab American attitudes generally tracked declining enthusiasm for Biden – whose overall approval rating stands at just 37% – despite the country’s solid economic growth and continued job gains. “Right now, they are God awful,” he said. Israel-Palestine conflict And the reason: two-thirds of respondents disapprove of Biden’s handling of the IsraelPalestine conflict, many seeing a clear double standard in the president’s defense of Israel following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack – which claimed some 1400 lives, many of them civilians – and his silence on the violence now being unleashed by Israel on Gaza, where, according to some estimates upwards of 8000 have been killed, many of them children. For Zogby, the poll’s key takeaway is the dramatic drop in support for Biden among Arab Americans across every group – regardless of religious affiliation or national origin – “in just a couple of weeks,” pointing to the widespread dissatisfaction over his handling of the conflict. “They were traumatized by this,” said Zogby. “As traumatized as they were with Donald Trump’s behavior, as traumatized as I have seen them be” with the invasion of Iraq and even further back with the war in Lebanon more than four decades ago. Jamal Dajani is an award-winning producer and journalist and host of the show Arab Talk Radio.

Currently in Egypt, he calls Biden’s dismal 17% approval shown in the poll “an exaggerated figure.” “I don’t know a single Arab American who would vote for Biden, after his statements demonizing Palestinians and giving Israel the green light to commit genocide in Gaza,” says Dajani. “His warmongering stance and indifference to Palestinian civilians’ lives will also hurt the Democratic Party.” Dajani points to the vocal support for Palestinians seen across college campuses in the US and among diverse ethnic groups – both key constituencies for the Democratic Party – which see the conflict in relation to recent social justice movements here in the US. Pro-Palestinian protests, meanwhile, have swept much of the country as well nations in Europe where officials have sought to tamp down or outright ban voices sympathetic to the Palestinian cause. Fears of rising islamophobia and antisemitism The conflict has also raised once again the specter of antisemitism and islamophobia in the US, where recent FBI data show an alarming 36% spike in antisemitic attacks in 2022, along with rises in anti-Muslim and anti-Arab attacks. There is growing concern that the ongoing violence in the Middle East could exacerbate these trends. According to the Arab American Institute’s findings, 78% of respondents said they are worried about anti-Arab bigotry, while 67% also expressed concerns over rising antisemitism. “They are sensitive to the fact that the violence and the backlash could affect both communities,” says Zogby, adding that the difference between this moment and past years – including in the immediate aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and the explicit anti-Muslim tenor of those years – is that this time it is “about Palestine, and it is about Palestinians.” As for what the Biden team can do to turn things around, Zogby offers this sober assessment. “When there is such a drop, something has to be done to repair the damage. The US can’t change Netanyahu from a frog to a prince,” Zogby explains, referring to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “What it can do is change the way it behaves.”
