Arizona and Nevada in 2020 was less than .5% and less than 3% respectively.

That is to say, it is clear that the proportion of Hispanic voters in those two states is much higher than the margin of victory in 2020, so in effect the Latino vote will be decisive, not only in the electoral outcome in those two states, but perhaps in the presidential election.

But the question is, how to achieve a percentage of Hispanic electoral participation that reflects our demographic strength at the polls, at a time when we face serious threats to democracy: misinformation, political polarization, attempts to suppress the vote, hate crimes and even political violence.

very 4 years, in each presidential election cycle we hear something like this: the Latino vote is going to define the electoral result. Everything seems to indicate that 2024 will not be the exception. According to most experts, the next presidential elections will be defined in 6 battleground states: Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. And of course we know that Joe Biden's margin of victory over Donald Trump in

Recently, in the midst of Hispanic Heritage Month, I had the opportunity to moderate a panel during the annual meeting of CHCI - the venerable Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. And although there were nuances in the answer to that question, the degree of agreement during the panel was clear: The Latino community is not a monolith, it is important that the messages of civic participation that arrive are differentiated for each community, ranging from young adults to people over 65, and that they are in their preferred language. “The best way to reach out to our audience is to reach out early, reach out often, and meet them where they are. That means speaking to them in Spanish at times, but in a culturally competent way. It also means looking for them on all media platforms to ensure that we connect with all ages, all backgrounds,” said California Democratic legislator Linda Sánchez. For Héctor Sánchez, the president of the voting outreach and voter registration organization Mi Familia Vota, it is essential to understand that Hispanics are not only decisive in the electoral outcome, but have been decisive in defending democracy under adverse conditions, as in the 2020 electoral cycle. “That's why political work in the nation's capital is important, because it's important that we use that political muscle to advance our political priorities,” he said. Federico Torre, vice president and regional sales director of Televisa/Univision, highlighted the role of the news media not only in encouraging civic participation, as the company is doing with its “Become a Citizen” campaign, but also in deliberately confronting misinformation designed to suppress the Latino vote. For the Democratic legislator, and current advisor to the Gifford campaign, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, one of the problems is that there is insufficient representation of Hispanics who appear in the media. There are plenty of businessmen, community leaders and politicians who appear in English-language media, but insufficiently in the Spanish-language equivalent. “We need to show the United States the power of Latinos in this country,” says Mucarsel-Powell. It is a complex challenge, but it is evident that the empowerment of Latinos in the United States implies addressing it through education, employment, political representation and civic participation. The good news is that many organizations are doing the right thing, the bad news is that many others are either not doing it or doing it insufficiently.

recently launched program is designed to help California high school and community college students with disabilities identify their career interests, develop workready skills, and land paid experiences with local employers. Career Launchpad - from workforce development organization Institute for Workplace Skills and Innovation (IWSI America) and the California Department of Rehabilitation (DOR) - is currently available to young people ages 16 to 21 in southern California in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Inyo counties.

"We want to develop an individual service plan (ISP) for each student. All the time we're working with them, we have an eye to helping them build a resume. We ask them to think about characteristics of self-attributes," explains Deborah Williamson, vice president of operations, IWSI America.

"'Are you a team player? Are you responsible?' They'll come up with a long list about themselves. We'll ask things like, 'What subjects do you gravitate to in school? What do you excel in?'" Williamson continues, "We ask them to link what they're doing in school with how that's going to impact a career goal. We ask them to visualize their work life in the future. 'Where do you see yourself working? What kind of work context?' There's a lot of dialogue about what they see themselves doing." Career Exploration and Real-World Experiences The DOR offers five student services including job exploration counseling, paid work-based learning experiences, information about postsecondary education options, workplace readiness training, and self-advocacy training, notes Carol Asch, assistant deputy director for the Vocational Rehabilitation Employment Division with the California DOR. "We wanted to take advantage of IWSI's relationships with employers and their experience with apprenticeships," says Asch. She explains, "With Career Launchpad, before [students] can start to receive services, they need to be registered with the DOR. We can start if they have an IEP (individualized education program) or a 504 Plan with their school, or if they have a disability or a documented disability, then we can start working with them and authorize the services on an individual basis." Williamson adds, "They have to be in school. If they graduated from high school, they should be moving towards their first year in college even if they are on a break." Currently there are about 40 students participating in Career Launchpad with another 26 authorizations moving through the pipeline, notes Williamson. During the initial 90 days, students participate in online sessions and industry-focused workshops. There is also focus on increasing the students' understanding of social and in-

terpersonal skills before they move onto 300 hours of paid service at a workplace. Based on coaching sessions, career counselors are recommending two or three career options that students might like to explore. With Career Launchpad just getting underway in early June, no students have yet been placed in real-world workplaces, but the 16 areas of career focus include health care, manufacturing, construction, hospitality, and agriculture. Partnership is Key Career Launchpad stakeholders include parents, guardians, local school, district and postsecondary education partners, local and regional employers, community organizations, and industry groups. Says Williamson, "Key to Career Launchpad is a partnership from Day One." She continues, "We could not, without the partnerships, be able to pull that off without the DOR, without the local businesses, without community college providers, without wraparound service providers. It just wouldn't fly. It really is a true team effort." Williamson says the early participants are motivated, "Students are pounding on our website asking, 'Hey, when can I have my ISP plan? I'm really excited about what you said about me.' And we're like, 'Well, you said it about yourself.' So the banter of dialogue is really good." She notes parents are also very excited about their children's prospects. "The feedback that we're getting realistically has been quite positive, quite encouraging to move ahead, that this is important. Parents have said to us, 'We had no idea. We didn't know what we were going to do about the employment factor given our situation. This is phenomenal.'"

It just wouldn't fly. BREAST CANCER SCREENINGS SHOULD HAPPEN EARLIER, HEALTH EXPERTS SAY ENGLISH

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and health professionals say younger women are increasingly being diagnosed with the cancer. About one in eight women will be diagnosed in her lifetime, but survival rates are high if the cancer is caught early. Dr. Monika Wells, an internal medicine specialist with Kaiser Permanente, said 50 is a well-known age for people to start getting screened for the cancer. "If you sample individuals even amongst my patient population, they think of about 50 as being the time they need to start getting mammograms," said Wells. "But what we're doing is, we're wanting to move the needle on that and have those conversations earlier." About one in eleven new breast cancer cases are diagnosed in women younger than 45. There are more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. Wells said it might be a good idea for some women to start the screening process at age 40.

"If we can identify who we can screen earlier and find those early cases," said Wells, "we sort of have a potentially ten-year head start on treating cancer." When breast cancer is caught at its earliest stage, the five-year survival rate is 99%. Wells said that's another reason why screening women at a younger age is important.

BEYOND CRAYONS AND CIRCLE TIME: WHAT CALIFORNIA TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN NEEDS TO SUCCEED California is rolling out its transitional kindergarten program, with the goal of offering it for all 4-year-olds by 2025-26. While some schools have had programs in place for years, others are just starting to create teaching guidelines.

T

ing is imperative if TK is going to succeed in getting students ahead in the early years, Cottingham said. The state is updating its preschool guidelines to include TK, but schools cannot afford to wait for the new version; they should “work with what we’ve already got,” or students will lose out on the benefits of an additional year of schooling, Cottingham said.

hanks to TikTok videos, billboards and other creative marketing techniques, enrollment in transitional kindergarten in California appears to be climbing. But advocates are keeping an eye on how those 4-year-olds are spending their class time — which they say will be a key factor in whether the $2.7 billion program is a success.

Assessments will also be important, he said, to hold districts accountable for the quality of their programs. Currently, the state is not requiring schools to test students in TK, although it does provide guidelines on how to measure students’ progress.

“Quality is top of mind for us. Some districts are treating it like a second year of kindergarten, which we know doesn’t work,” said Benjamin Cottingham, with Policy Analysis for California Education, an independent, nonpartisan research center. “To be effective, TK needs to be a play-based, developmentally appropriate course of study.” Transitional kindergarten, which California first launched in limited capacity in 2010, is meant to ease 4-year-olds into the rigors of elementary school. Ideally, it combines the carefree fun of preschool with a hint of structure and academic know-how, so children are better prepared for kindergarten and beyond. In a high-quality TK classroom, children learn to share and take turns, draw pictures and play with blocks, sit in a circle and enjoy story time, among other skills. A study of California’s TK program by the American Institute of Research found that children who completed TK had stronger skills in math and literacy when they started kindergarten and were more engaged in learning than their peers who didn’t participate in the program. The benefits were especially pronounced for English learners and low-income students. In 2021, California expanded its transitional kindergarten, requiring schools to provide space for all eligible 4-year-olds whose families want it. With a rollout period of five years, schools have been busy hiring and training teachers, buying more crayons and blocks, converting classrooms to meet state guidelines and getting the word out. After a lull, enrollment appears to rebound In 2022-23, enrollment lagged below expectations, likely due to the lingering effects of the COVID pandemic, according to the Legislative Analysist’s Office. Just over half of California’s eligible 4-year-olds were enrolled in TK last year, roughly 22% below state projections. But now enrollment appears to be increasing. The official numbers for 2023-24 won’t be available for several months, but a CalMatters sampling of districts statewide reported better-than-expected enrollment so far this year. Schools credit the uptick to improved outreach. District staff are talking to parents at local preschools and child care centers, posting flyers in pediatricians’ offices, buying ads on social media and even going door-to-door. In Rescue Union School District in the Sierra foothills of El Dorado County, word-of-mouth has been the most effective recruitment tool, said Superintendent Jim Shoemake. The district bought newspaper ads and put up signs, but nothing compares to the power of parents chatting at barbecues, block parties and soccer games. Enrollment has increased steadily, with 142 students enrolled this year, and the retention rate is nearly 100%, he said.

Hanna Melnick, senior policy adviser at the Learning Policy Institute who co-leads the early childhood learning team, adds that assessment, as well as curriculum, will be important as TK expands.

“TK has benefitted the entire district,” Shoemake said. “It’s great to have a child on campus for six years, but seven is even better. We get a chance to onboard these kids early, so they’re successful not just in elementary school, but middle school and beyond.” Rescue Union parent Aly Perkins said her twin daughters, Hazel and Scarlett, loved their TK class last year. They learned their ABCs and 123s, but it was social skills that had the biggest impact, she said. “They learned things like manners, how to make friends, how to keep friends — those skills will benefit them their whole lives,” Perkins said. “I think TK gives kids the confidence and cushion they need to succeed in school. I’m really glad we decided to send them.” Even in Los Angeles Unified, the nation’s second-largest school district, word-of-mouth has been key to TK enrollment. In addition to bus ads and billboards, a social media campaign, a hotline and robocalls, the district has enlisted school staff and parent volunteers to hand out flyers within a four-block radius of elementary schools. “A parent saying, ‘I have my kid in this program and it’s great’ is much better than it coming from me,” said Dean Tagawa, the district’s executive director for early childhood education. “That parent-to-parent connection, that level of trust, is what’s important.” “We get a chance to onboard these kids early, so they’re successful not just in elementary school, but middle school and beyond.” -JIM SHOEMAKE, SUPERINTENDENT OF THE RESCUE UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT The tactics seem to be working. Los Angeles Unified has opened TK classrooms at nearly all 488 elementary schools. And children who attended the district’s TK program have significantly outperformed their peers not in the program in reading, writing and math in kindergarten and first grade, according to district data. They also fared better social-emotionally,

“The TK rollout has been faster than we expected, but we don’t have a good way to monitor quality, and district capacities to teach 4-year-olds vary greatly,” she said. “Some have been doing this for a long time, and some are new and don’t yet have the background or training.”

based on teacher feedback on report cards.

‘A system that’s working’ in Tulare

In Lodi Unified, a TikTok video chronicling a day in the life of a Lodi kindergartener has garnered more than 13,200 views and helped fill classrooms. With enrollment exceeding expectations, the district is on track to open at least one TK classroom at every elementary school by 2025-26.

Tulare City School District, a 9,200-student district south of Fresno, has been offering a cohesive preschool-through-first-grade program for a decade, and seeing positive results. Until the pandemic, third grade math and reading scores had jumped nearly 30% since the district implemented the program in the early 2010s. Now they are again beginning to improve.

“Overall, it’s going really well, and I believe that by the time these students are in third grade, we’re going to see huge improvements in outcomes,” said Susan Petersen, the district’s director of education. Persistent staffing challenges While some districts have struggled to hire enough TK teachers, Lodi Unified has filled all its vacancies, she said. The district is providing training and in-classroom coaching, and using a curriculum focused on learning through playing. Some of the new TK teachers are credentialed elementary teachers, and some are veteran preschool teachers pursuing credentials. “We’ve found that it’s a sought-after position,” she said. Recognizing that 4-year-olds learn in unique ways, the Legislature will require by 2025 TK teachers to have credentials as well as 24 units of early childhood education or the equivalent. That extra requirement may pose a barrier to filling positions — many districts are already grappling with teacher shortages. An analysis by the Learning Policy Institute last fall found that 80% of school districts in California didn’t yet have enough qualified TK teachers. Meanwhile, the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing is working on a new credential that will prepare teachers for preschool through third grade, with a focus on literacy. A goal: create a seamless continuum in which students learn by playing, rather than sitting at desks. That focus on high-quality teaching and learn-

The curriculum is linked from grade to grade, and teachers work closely together, easing children’s transitions from one classroom to the next. All sites offer after-school care, making it easier for parents with jobs. And teachers try to get to know families and ensure they feel welcome and part of their children’s education, said Jennifer Marroquin, the district’s assistant superintendent of educational services. “For parents, it can be scary dropping your 3or 4-year-old off for the first time. So we try to make them feel supported,” Marroquin said. “We found a system that’s working, and it’s become one of our district’s strengths.” By the time TK is fully in place statewide, most districts should have programs resembling Tulare’s, said Kelly Reynolds, a policy analyst for Early Edge California, a nonprofit advocacy group that’s worked closely with the state on transitional kindergarten. She expects the challenges with staffing, enrollment and quality will be resolved — or close to it — within the next few years. Because transitional kindergarten, like kindergarten itself, is not mandatory, enrollment will never be 100%, she noted. And depending on where they live, 4-year-olds have plenty of high-quality options aside from TK — including private preschool, state-supported preschool, child care and Head Start. “We want to make sure all 4-year-olds are being served in high-quality programs, and families know the breadth of opportunities available to them,” she said. “I do think we’re on track. Enrollment is trending upwards, and we’re seeing there’s a real demand for TK.”

NEWSOM SIGNS CLIMATE BILLS THAT FORCE LARGE COMPANIES TO REVEAL ROLE AND RISKS IN CLIMATE CHANGE Newsom signed two bills requiring large companies to report their financial risks posed by climate change as well as their annual greenhouse gases. But he will work with the Legislature to relax the 2026 deadlines.

n October 10 Gov. Gavin Newsom signed two closely-watched, first-in-the-nation bills that will force large companies to disclose their greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change and their financial risks.

Economic activity has long been the principal driver of the world’s changing climate, and for the last two decades, organizations have sought uniform standards for reporting corporations’ greenhouse gas emissions.

The emissions disclosures will have to be independently verified by an outside consultant, “an independent third-party assurance provider.”

Newsom approved Senate Bill 261, which requires large companies to biennially report their financial risks from climate change. But he said in a statement that he will work with the Legislature on relaxing the law’s 2026 implementation date because the California Air Resources Board won’t have “sufficient time to adequately carry out the requirements.” He added that he also is “concerned about the overall financial impact of this bill on businesses, so I am instructing CARB to closely monitor the cost impacts.”

The aim of the legislation is to hold large companies accountable for the role they play in climate change. For years, many businesses have marketed themselves as environmental stewards while failing to fully disclose their emissions.

“I look forward to working with the Legislature on these outstanding items to ensure that the bill’s intent is achieved,” he said.

The greenhouse gas bill passed off the Assembly floor with an initial vote of 41-20, then cleared the Senate in a final, 27-8 vote. Last year, a similar bill failed in the state Assembly on the last night of the legislative session.

Under the new law, more than 10,000 companies with revenues exceeding $500 million to detail how climate change threatens the profitability and financial stability of their operations, not just in California, but around the world. Examples are high temperatures, wildfires, droughts and other natural conditions altered by climate change.

field among private and public companies. Once again, California is leading the nation on essential climate action.”

sions from suppliers and consumers wouldn’t begin until 2027 — and the companies won’t be penalized for inaccurate reports for the first few years.

Increased corporate transparency on emissions could lead to highly publicized “top polluters” lists that make major corporations more accountable — and uncomfortable — since their full role in causing climate change would be exposed.

The United Kingdom already requires companies to report emissions, and the European Union will begin requiring the reports in 2025. Gov. “These disclosures are simple but transformational, which is why companies like Apple are already reporting their emissions and calling them essential to their corporate climate goals,” Wiener said in a statement last month. “We need strong transparency to create a level playing

Newsom also signed Senate Bill 253, but voiced similar concerns about the deadline. Under that groundbreaking bill, beginning in 2026, about 5,300 U.S. corporations earning more than $1 billion and doing business in California must annually report their global emissions of carbon dioxide and other planet-warming greenhouse gases. “The implementation deadlines in this bill are likely infeasible, and the reporting protocol specified could result in inconsistent reporting across businesses subject to the measure. I am directing my Administration to work with the bill’s author and the Legislature next year to address these issues,” Newsom said. In the final weeks of California’s legislative session, business groups, growers and oil companies intensely lobbied lawmakers to reject the greenhouse gas bill, calling it unworkable and likely to lead to inaccurate reports of emissions. Environmental groups, big tech companies Apple, Google, Microsoft and Salesforce, and some global corporations that emphasize sustainability, including IKEA, supported it. Any company that meets the revenue threshold and sells or produces goods or services in California will have to comply, including such large, global corporations as varied as Amazon, Chevron, McDonalds, Kroger and Walmart. Businesses must report not only the tons of gases they emit globally from all of their own global operations and energy use, but also from less-direct sources, such as their supply chains, contractors and even consumers’ use of their products. These indirect sources, called “Scope 3” emissions, have raised the concerns of business groups. Business groups said the estimates could be inaccurate, resulting in misguided public policy, while putting an onerous burden on companies. Last month, state Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat from San Francisco who authored the greenhouse gas bill, amended it to give companies until 2030 before fines for inaccurately reporting emissions from those less-direct sources would kick in. The companies will still have to report emissions from their operations and their energy use beginning in 2026. But the reports of emis-

Meanwhile the Biden administration’s U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has proposed a rule that would require publicly traded companies to report verified greenhouse gas emissions and climate-related financial risks. But the federal efforts — which do not include private companies — have met fierce opposition from business groups. Of the 5,300 U.S. corporations that would have to report their emissions under California’s bill, about 73% are privately held companies, according to sustainability group Ceres. “In California, we would be leading the way with a gold standard that in a lot of ways would do the work that can’t happen for all kinds of reasons in D.C. right now,” said Catherine Atkin, a climate attorney who formed the group Carbon Accountable to advocate for the bill. “We need strong transparency to create a level playing field among private and public companies. Once again, California is leading the nation on essential climate action.” -ASSEMBLYMEMBER SCOTT WIENER

Opposition came from the California Chamber of Commerce and consortiums of large and powerful industry groups: the Western States Petroleum Association, which represents oil companies, the Western Growers Association and and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, which represents stockbrokers and investment bankers. “Companies are going to have to start communicating not on the fact that they are carbon neutral — which usually didn’t mean anything — but that they are on the path to reduction,” said Alexis Normand, chief executive of Greenly, a carbon accounting start-up.

The new financial risk law requires the companies to define risks by adhering to rules created by The Financial Stability Board, an international financial regulatory body. About 80% of the 10,400 affected companies will be private, according to the sustainability group Ceres.

Las mudanzas comienzan en enero de 2024.

The reports must include vulnerabilities to shareholder value, consumer demand, supply chains, employee safety, loans and other economic threats that may be amplified by changing climate and more extreme weather events. CalChamber lobbyist Brady Van Engelen called the risk reports “a gold-plated exercise in gathering information.” The new law comes as climate change is contributing to more heat waves, swings between droughts and floods, wildfires and hurricanes — all of which pose economic risks to large corporations. As of June 8, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had confirmed nine disasters exceeding $1 billion in impacts this year. The annual average over the previous five years was 18, compared with only eight each year from 1980 to 2022, adjusted for inflation.

roups that fight for consumers and auto safety are urging Governor Gavin Newsom to veto a bill that they say would make it harder for Californians who allege fraud or get stuck with a "lemon" vehicle to prove their case. Senate Bill 71 raises the limit from $25,000 to $35,000 to avoid being moved to limited civil court - where the discovery process and the number of depositions are limited. Michael Brooks, executive director, Center for Auto Safety, contends this change would put people who buy mid-range vehicles at a disadvantage. "What they're doing is raising the limit to $35,000," he said. "And then, everyone under that bar is going to find it much more difficult to succeed when they have a defective vehicle that qualifies as a lemon." The bill is supported by debt collectors and the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, which represents the auto industry. The Alliance, in a letter to lawmakers, said the change would, quote, "benefit consumers and the auto industry by reducing litigation costs and accelerating case timelines in lemon law cases."

Brooks said that line of argument does not hold water. "It's being passed off as a bill that's somehow going to simplify the process for consumers, but what it actually is going to do is limit their ability to prove their case," Brooks implored. In limited civil court, the time period for filing appeals is shortened to 30 days, and there is a cap on damages that a judge or jury can award. The bill would also raise the limit in small claims court from $10,000 to $12,500.

Q&A: ADDIE MORALES, AND HOW LES MISÉRABLES CONTINUES TO ATTRACT AUDIENCES AND STAY CONTEMPORARY Performer in Broadway National Tour of acclaimed musical talks about embracing the character of Cosette, escaping Hurricane Katrina, and how singing helped her come out of her shell

A

Arturo Hilario El Observador

ddie Morales is an actor, singer and performer who is currently on the Les Misérables touring production which arrives to San Jose on October 17-22, 2023 at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts. Recently she talked with us about the show and her journey towards the stage, breaking down why there is an enduring popularity with the story of Les Misérables, and how being a Latina in the role of Cosette has been a special experience for her and her family. Les Misérables takes place in 19th century France, telling a story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption – a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. This uplifting story has become one of the most celebrated musicals in theatrical history. This version has been touring since 2009, when a reinvented version was created to celebrate its 25th anniversary. This is the first time the updated version of the Tony Awardwinning musical comes to San Jose.

I got into musical theater, and it just kind of helped me process some things, get out of my shell, deal with some of that trauma…it became a therapy, and eventually it became an art. -Addie Morales

I was reading that you are originally from New Orleans but moved to Texas as a child? So my family and I relocated. I was about nine for Hurricane Katrina, so I do still have family in New Orleans. My dad's side of the family's from New Orleans, but my mom is from Corpus Christi, and we have a ton of family in Texas, and so it just kind of made sense for us to move over to Texas, and my parents ended up loving it and loved it for us, for the kids, and so we ended up staying. I go back and forth between them.

What teenage girl hasn't rebelled against her dad but also loves him so much? That's very Cosette. So that's helpful for me. But I'd say she's different from other characters that I've played, because you have limited text to work with. So a lot of my job this time with this particular role has been filling in the blanks, coloring in the lines and bringing meaning into what very few lines she has.

It's an honor, honestly, when you're a part of something so much bigger than yourself, it feels bigger than you can imagine. And so many greats have been in this show, right? So many people who have gone on to do amazing things and become stars have been a part of Les Miz. And so you get to just add your little spin to that, you get to be a part of that. And I loved it. I never looked back. From there I got into musical theater, and it just kind of helped me process some things, get out of my shell, deal with some of that trauma, and I don't know, it became a therapy and eventually it became an art.

They kind of wanted me out of my shell and they had family members tell them, "oh, she's got a great voice, you should train her, you should put her in voice lessons." And I was so uninterested, I did not want to perform. We performed for my family, and that was different. It was game, it was fun. But being serious about it, I really didn't want to do it. And so my dad asked me every day for months. He was like, "I want to put you in voice lessons. Will you take a voice lesson?"

Yes, of course. It's a classic for a reason you know. It's one of those that never goes away because it touches everyone. Basically, you know, we're following Jean Valjean and his story where he goes from, basically just a petty thief to a moral man. That's the story that we're following.

So I took voice lessons until I went to college from twelve to eighteen.

Yes. I will say I have played a lot of young lovers, for sure. It is a style of mine, I'd say. So it's familiar to me and also Cosette, a lot of her work, a lot of her stage time and being has to do with her relationship with her dad. And obviously, I have a crazy great relationship with my dad, and so it's very easy to pull from my own life and play on that.

And how does it feel to be part of such a storied and tremendous show?

Yeah, funny enough, they are all kind of related. So we moved to Texas after Katrina, and that was a lot for a child to go through. It was a lot for my family to go through. Relocating is hard to do, especially all at once, like, last minute. So we stayed in Texas, and I became kind of a shy child. I was really outgoing when I was younger, but it had an effect on me, and it had an effect on my family, and so my parents were kind of looking for things for me to do, for me to express myself.

And I said, no. And the next day he asked me the same question, and I said no. And it went on for like, months, and I became so sick of it. I was like, "okay, I will take one class, like one voice lesson. And if I don't like, like, I'm quitting. I'm quitting the day after."

For you, what is playing this character compared to the other work that you've done so far? And how have you related or do you see any relation to this character?

Basically that just comes from research - we're pulling from the hugest book ever. And so you just have to know what you're talking about, where you come from and all that, because it's not given to you too much. Within her text, she does not say much, but the key is she is saying so much, but saying so little, what she means is so much. That's been a challenge, honestly.

More information and tickets are available at broadwaysanjose.com.

What was your journey to getting into performance arts? What inspired you, and how did that end up happening for you?

unfortunate circumstances. And so she kind of ends up being the hope at the end.

Now, could you touch a little bit on the story of Les Miz and why it continues to kind of have this important space in musical theater?

And the story of forgiveness, redemption, overcoming tragedy and overcoming your circumstances, I think not only is relatable to everyone in every walk of life, but it sparks hope and it sparks inspiration. And I think that's what keeps audiences not only coming back, but sharing it with the next generation, because that's what we need so badly. We always do need it. And history does repeat itself. But as a world, we've gone through quite a lot these last couple of years, and I feel like people are hungry for a story of inspiration. And the music is too good.

Can you touch on your character of Cosette? I play Cosette. The trope she functions as in the show, is 'young lovers'. But really what's funny is there's this funny video that puts together a compilation of how many times the word Cosette, her name is said in the show, and it's like countless times because she's not on stage a ton. There's so many characters, there's so many things happening. However, she is the centerpiece of the show. The concept of Cosette and how the show revolves around her and catapults Jean Valjean into redemption is cool. So, basically, she is the adopted daughter of Jean Valjean. She was born in poverty, and he takes her in after her mother dies, spoilers. He's responsible for her and for mentoring her, being her father as she's growing up and basically keeping her safe, protecting her from the world. And she eventually falls in love with a young boy who's a part of the rebellion, so drama there. I think all dads have a hard time with their daughters growing up, falling in love. But at the end of the show, she and Marius last. And to me, she's the concept of bringing that lesson into the next generation. She is the good that's been created, the diamond in the rough that's been created from

You get to be another name that goes down on the list of amazing people who have been a part of this. So while it is like, "oh, this is a piece of my own," right? Because that is my own. But she also belongs to everyone. And I'm like, oh, my gosh, she belongs to all of us. We've all done this together. And so I don't know, it's really cool to think about and I'm honored to have my name on the list of people who have played Cosette. It's been amazing. I've also been specifically honored to play her because I don't look how she is traditionally cast as we move into a world where we're not as obsessed with looks, with the character looks like you can kind of look anyway. So that's been really special for me, and I think that's been really special for my family because that was not a role I always could play, and I always imagined that I could play. So it's like, so special. Why do you recommend that people see the show? You will laugh, you will cry, and you will tell everyone about it. But most importantly, it will leave you with something you didn't have before. Whether that's a feeling, whether that's a thought, whether that is the inspiration or the hope, you will leave with something new, and it is priceless. I encourage everyone to come see this show. We have something special going on.

COMPANIES ESTABLISH STANDARDS TO BUILD TRUST IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

nies fail to take adequate, meaningful action to protect our children," Cox asserted. "We will prevail in holding social media companies accountable by any means necessary."

rtificial intelligence is growing quickly, so companies such as Google, Amazon, Verizon, Microsoft and more have come together to establish best practices in the field. They seek to foster responsible governance, prioritizing privacy, accountability and benefit to society. Miriam Vogel, president and CEO of the nonprofit Equal AI, just published a report laying out the standards, in a bid to build trust in the AI system. "This work is not just the right thing to do, it's actually good business as well," Vogel contended. "It is a competitive advantage for a company to follow the framework because the end result is building trust in their AI systems. It's building trust with their employees. It's building trust with their consumers." AI is a machine-based system capable of leveraging huge data sets to make predictions or decisions, and is behind such technology as the Alexa personal assistant, autonomous vehicles and ChatGPT. The new standards seek to ensure AI tech is safe, inclusive and effective for all possible end users.

TikTok responded to the lawsuit by saying it has safeguards in place to mitigate excessive usage. Vogel noted while many current laws govern AI, more regulation is likely going forward. And companies cannot wait for the dust to settle as they forge ahead.

"This framework is intended to help people understand what they need to do now to make sure that they are not creating any unintentional harm," Vogel outlined. "That they're not inviting liability, either in litigation, prosecution, or abovethe-fold terrible headlines." The framework is divided into six main categories: Responsible AI values and principles, accountability, documentation, defined processes, multi-stakeholder reviews, and metrics to monitor progress.

Sean Reyes, Attorney General, said the lawsuit is the result of what he considers TikTok's violation of multiple provisions within Utah's Consumer Sales Practices Act. He called the harm produced by social media "pervasive," as nearly all adolescents engage with social media. Reyes argued the app's algorithm "intentionally creates" addictive behaviors in children.

n Tuesday, the state of Utah announced it is suing TikTok as it claims the social media platform "baits children into addictive and unhealthy use."

"TikTok designed these features to mimic a cruel slot machine that hooks kids' attention and does not let them go," Reyes contended. "Even worse, TikTok has trained its computer program to continuously learn how to better manipulate our kids."

Gov. Spencer Cox said at a news conference the platform promotes children to stay online for hours at a time. Recent research shows adolescents who spend more than three hours a day on social media face double the risk of experiencing poor mental health outcomes such as depression and anxiety.

Reyes alleged TikTok has been dishonest to parents because he said the social media giant has "created a false sense of security" by standing behind the safety guidelines and provisions it enforces. He argued the only way for TikTok to change its practices is if it is put at legal risk.

documentation as well. 3. As Respondent has not provided his W-2, the amount is unknown for the Smith-Ostler payment. Respondent’s last Smith-Ostler payment was a total of $213,770.80. As this is a significant amount, it is crucial to figure out what Respondent now owes. 4. As this matter is now post-judgment, we are not able to process the subpoena as normal. We could have to personally serve Respondent with the Notice to Consumer as we would have to Subpoena Apple, Inc., his past employer, for his W-2. This is an unnecessary additional expense that I should not have to incur due to his failure to comply. 5. Both of our counsel have met and conferred on multiple occasions to resolve this issue and we still have yet to receive any paystubs or incomerelated document from him. 6. The true Smith -Ostler amount remains unknown due to lack of Respondent’s W-2. -END OF ATTACHMENTRun Dates: September 22, 29, October 6 and 13, 2023

WISHING ON A STAR: DISNEY’S NEW ORIGINAL FAIRYTALE WISH HOPES TO CAPTURE THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF THE ANIMATION STUDIO’S LEGACY Behind the Scenes of the Story, the Visual Language and the Reflection of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 100-Year History

his year has been an exciting time for all things Disney. As they celebrate their platinum anniversary, the studio has been busy at work developing the ultimate encapsulation of Disney animation. One that takes from their 100- year history and asks the question, “What happens when you wish upon a star and that star comes down from the cosmos to greet you?” Recently we had the opportunity to speak with the creative team behind Wish to find out how they took on the daunting task of looking through the storied catalogue of the studio that Walt Disney built to create something worthy of the centennial history while still having it be fresh and current. With the help of many of the companies greatest artists, storytellers and archivists, they took the idea of wishing upon the stars to create a new original story that surprisingly enough is the studio’s first homegrown fairytale not based on anything that existed prior. With inspiration from the giant painted backgrounds used for such films as Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio, the creators of Wish made a love letter to the studio they so deeply admire, an ode to the billions of memories Walt Disney’s characters and movies have left in generations since its beginning in 1923. The Story of Wish Wish is the story of a 17-yearold named Asha who lives on the outskirts of the magical kingdom of Rosas, which itself is an island at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula. In Rosas, wishes are granted by the magical King Magnifico. Asha is an idealist who is a beacon of light in her family and community.

As she stares into the sky, wishing for guidance, an actual star comes down to assist her in the journey to unravel the mysteries of the kingdom and help her community.

“There's that moment where [characters] start to speak to you and they tell you what they need to be. It was such a beautifully pure collaboration of when I think of it, it just was about possibility at the beginning and then some details came in and fell away as they always do. But then once we found Asha and Magnifico, they became everything for me in terms of the scope and the world fell into place. And so once that happens, it's a really great, energetic time,” says Lee. Heroism is a core tenant in Disney animation, and Asha in Wish grows into that throughout the film as well. She starts off as a teenager with normal ambitions, and she as well as the viewers watch her and world grow. “I think we've all watched many of the movies over and over and over again and know there's certain, you know, delicious characters. And having watched it with the Frozen sisters, just the sense of going back to that classic heroine. But what makes Asha unique and different? What new kind of story could we tell in terms of while also celebrating that we have great, strong heroines and the idea of watching her coming of age in a way that she doesn't start out with the ambition in the beginning.” In a move that will make many Disney fans excited, Wish will have the return of the classic Disney villain to face off against the heroine and her troupe of friends. Magnifico, voiced by Chris Pine, has the sharp looks of a hero but deviousness of someone who is hiding something, and based on the Wish trailer, might have a great villain song complete with the iconic green colors seen in villains like Scar in The Lion King, Ursula in The Little Mermaid, and even Oogie Boogie in The Nightmare Before Christmas. “To get to write a villain was daunting and delicious and scary. But to start to understand that what makes Magnifico unique was that we could start with, there's reasons behind his want, you can say they're kind of beautiful, what he wants

for people, but that's not the measure of a character, it's when they're tested and how they respond and how can they handle stress.” Designing a Visual Homage to Disney Animation At the core of the creation of Wish was the idea of paying tribute to the art that came before, and with this film directors Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn made it a mission to pull from the past while creating something new and unique. Directed by Oscar-winning Chris Buck (director of Frozen, Frozen) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (head of story, Raya and the Last Dragon) both represent different generations of the studio, collaborating to bring a unified vision of the 100 years of Disney. Buck joined Disney as a hand-drawn animator under the guidance of Eric Larson, one of the studio’s Nine Old Men, the famous core group of Walt Disney animators. Veerasunthorn grew up in Thailand idolizing movies like Beauty and the Beast and joined the studio as a story artist on the original Frozen. Together, they set on taking elements from classic Disney stories and bringing their essence to the new project, taking note of the consistencies in visual styles, whether it be backgrounds, objects or characters. Veerasunthorn says, “We always set out with the two main goals: One is how do we celebrate the legacy of the studio? And the other is how do we pave the way for the future, look into the future. So the legacy part is in the look and feel of this movie, the watercolor look, the DNA of wishing upon the star. But we have an all-new original fairy tale. And we have a pop songwriter, Julia Michaels and Ben Rice that bring in these contemporary tunes to the Disney movie.” Buck adds, “There were a lot of things. Characters looking up at the sky, characters wishing on stars. We're like, ‘it's in the Disney DNA.’ And so then it just kind of kept snowballing from there, the whole wishing and wishing on a star and creating a character, bringing a star down, what would that be like? So all those kinds of fun things happened just from that initial thing of really looking at kind of what Walt had created.” As Walt Disney was one of the main inspirations for Wish, a lot of research was done on his life outside of the studio. “We always went back to Walt. We studied a lot of his history and how he grew up and how he got into the film business and why he and all these things. And those were so instrumental, at least in the early stages. And they really just kind of helped us along the way, too,” says Buck. The visual language of the film took from many Disney classics, including the grandiose hand-painted backgrounds of Sleeping Beauty, which filmmakers say adds to why Wish was meant to be seen on the big screen. “Sleeping Beauty has always been, we knew it's one of the most beautiful films the studio has ever done and then one of the biggest. And we thought, ‘well, it sure would be nice to celebrate this movie, the 100th anniversary, with a big film,’ something physically big on the screen. And so Sleeping Beauty, not only the aspect ratio, but then also just the design work is so gorgeous,” says Buck. Veerasunthorn says, “We studied the composition of those illustrations at the turn of the century. The specific way they frame things

with the archway or leaving a lot of space on the we dissected that and then we give that presentation to story artists who are involved in the early stages, and then that informed layout. Because any time you pause in this film, our hope is that it's a painting.” Buck adds, “Then we went back to the original artists that inspired Walt. Sometimes they weren't even artists that actually worked on the films, but just artists that inspired the artists who did work on the films. So we went back to the source of the source and it was great to do that. And we kept going back and just seeing what were the amazing things that they did. Because obviously they would probably look at today and go, ‘my gosh, you can do so many things with the computer, things we can never do.’ But there are also things that they did that just have that heart and soul and passion that really speak, that really say ‘Disney’.”

And as for the two directors working together on this? They had a great time learning from one another and being weird. Buck says, “Well, Fawn I loved because, again, we know each other from the first Frozen, she boarded on that and so I already knew she was a great artist, she was a great thinker. She did a lot on Frozen also, she just really helped us kind of work on some tough sequences. So I already knew she had so much, that she cared so much about the story and the characters and brought that all the time to everything.” Working with Veerasunthorn and showing her the new departments and the artists who she didn’t interact with when she was in a specific department broadened her experience. She adds, “it's been a dream working with Chris. We knew each other from Frozen, but almost like from afar. And I admired him from Tarzan. So we had Frozen, Frozen, getting to work closely and we had similar sense of humor. That's what's delightful about it. I'm kind of weird and he's kind of weird too!” “I didn't realize she was as twisted as I am!” adds Buck. A Wish for Joy and Hope As the 100-year-old studio puts the final touches on their newest creation, a look back at the work that has been accomplished and a look forward at what can be, those that had the opportunity to work on it speak of the experience as one of pride and honor as it goes out into the world to be seen by audiences who will compare and contrast it to the compendium of all that is Disney, and for the creators, hopefully enjoy the unique voice it has. Producer Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster Jones says, “from a thematic point of view, it's always been a movie about joy, but also about hope, because that is what Disney means to most of us, right. When we think about Disney, we think about joy, we think about hope.” Del Vecho says, “I hope it gives them a sense of hope. I think it's something that's very much needed in the world. I hope they enjoy taking their friends and family to the theater to see it on the big screen, because it's been a while since we've been able to do that. And we made this movie to share with people, to get that sense of community back, and I hope this movie reconnects people.”

“Siempre volvimos a Walt.
