Players of the Month
In O Week, Senior defensive back T.J. Fonseca of PSJA North made two key tackles and intercepted a pass and returned it 31 yards for a touchdown to give the Raiders their first win of the year over McAllen Rowe 21-16. In O Week, Jorge “Coco” Martinez of St. Joe rushed for 251 yards on 27 carries and six touchdowns in their win over Santa Rosa 47-14. He scored on runs of 18, 1, and 6 yards in the first quarter. In Week 2, Harlingen South Hawk quarterback Peter De La Garza passed for 335 yards and three touchdowns as they defeated the Weslaco East Wildcats 35-7. He threw scoring strikes of 52, 14, and 13 yards. In Week 2, Mishak Rivas, a sophomore clocked with 4.4 speed in the 40 yard run rushed for 212 yards on 13 carries and scored on runs of 66, 9, and 41 yards to give Weslaco a 55-32 win over Brownsville Hanna. In Week 2, Harlingen 6’3 quarterback Robert Sanchez passed for 252 yards and one touchdown and he also rushed for 123 yards and two more scores to lead the Cards over the Edinburg Bobcats 41-33 in non-district action. The Cards overcame six turnovers throughout the game. In Week 3, running back 6’0 Bradley Stephens of McAllen Memorial scored five touchdowns and rushed for 230 yards in their non-district win over Weslaco East. He scored four touchdowns and rushed for 153 yards all in the first quarter. He had runs of 80, 57, 55, 5, 10 yards. In Week 3, Los Fresnos quarterback 6’1 Brandon Kretz passed for 326 yards and four touchdowns as the Falcons flew past the McAllen Nikki Rowe Warriors 44-3. He hit four different receivers for 25, 13, 6, and 39 yard scoring strikes. In Week 4, Brownsville Lopez running back Juan Munoz rushed for 249 yards and scored three touchdowns in their 32-4A district opener against Mercedes. Munoz, also a punter, scored on a 97-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter. In Week 4, McHi Bulldog kicker Christian Brom kicked a 47-yard field goal to give the Bulldogs their first win of the season in a non-district contest win over PSJA 21-20. This was the second kick for Brom, who earlier connected on a 28 yarder before the half. He also converted on one PAT. All winners will be awarded the RGV High School Sports Magazine/MVEC Football Player of the Week awards to be presented at each campus. Congratulations!

David “Touchdown Dave” Amador Meets Dave Campbell at the annual Dave Campbell’s Football Magazine Classic held recently at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The McAllen Bulldogs and Harlingen Cardinals were invited to play in the annual classic. “Meeting legendary Dave Campbell was an honor,” says HSSM Publisher, Amador.
