CATCH ONTO THESE TRENDS COMPANY: Too Ugly For L.A. OWNER/DESIGNER: Austin Tinius LOCATION: Austin, TX WEBSITE: shoptoouglyforla.com

COMPANY STORY?

I’ve been printing t-shirts using brands like American Apparel and Gildan since 2006 and I finally wanted to get my own cut-and-sew garments out there. Using my favorite vintage Harley Davidson shirt for the template, my goal was to create a shirt that fit like a 30-yearold favorite. Because I have no intention of ever moving out to L.A., I thought the name “Too Ugly For L.A.” suited the brand--taking its roots from the Waylon Jennings song “Too dumb for New York City, Too Ugly for L.A.” Back in 2009 (I think) Kristy contacted me about shooting promo pictures for my other brand “Burger and Friends.” When I began working on the new line I knew it’d be extremely beneficial to work with someone based out of LA, since it’s our main target demo, who has her heels firmly planted in the LA lifestyle. She’s currently the Chief Marketing Director; one day I’ll meet her in real life.

WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOUR BRAND REPRESENTS?

Inspired by the drastic differences and subtle similarities between the youth scene in Austin and Los Angeles, Too Ugly for L.A. is making clothing for today’s stoners and boners. 8 - HIGHLIGHTMAGAZINE.NET

WHAT ARE YOUR THREE FAVORITE DESIGNS?

1. You’d Never Make it in L.A. (I heard Bobby tell this to Hank on an episode of King of the Hill.) 2. Bored In The U.S.A. (Some people take this as “I’m sick of the USA” and it’s entertaining to see the comments on social media toward it.) 3. Job Hunting (Most people dismiss this design as “I’m looking for a job,” and the sexual connotation goes right over their head.)

WHY PEOPLE SHOULD CHECK OUT YOUR BRAND?

Apologies in advance to moms and dads out there, but if you need an offensive shirt for your class photo you’ve come to the right place.

YOU MAY WANT TO LISTEN TO...

Sub Pop is one of those record labels that you simply cannot ignore when learning about music history. Based in Seattle, they first started off as a small fanzine and grew to be one of the most well known record labels in history. Celebrating their 25th anniversary this past April their long list of artists include bands like Nirvana, The Postal Service, and The Shins all signed on to the label, it is one of the most sought after labels by up and coming musicians. The label continues to make success with their newer bands that continue to influence the music world. Check some of them out below!

FLEET FOXES -

Another wonderful folk group signed this label. If lyrics are your thing then this band is definitely for you. Then, add mesmerizing harmonies that take your breath away as to how they actually do it and you have the Fleet Foxes. Their use of various instruments keeps you wanting to listen even more closely as to what else they can throw in their and they keep surprising you with more. With rumors of a third album in the works, we can’t wait to hear what they’re going to do next. Listen to: “White Winter Hymnal”

FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS -

Does this duo need an introduction? While they’re mostly seen as a comedy duo more than a music duo their still one of the best at what they do. Their albums are hilarious and filled with various genres that make you wonder how they can possibly do it all. Whether you’re looking for a laugh or a new favorite song, Flight of the Conchords is there to do just that. Listen To: “Bowie”

THE HEAD AND THE HEART - This band has a sound

that you wouldn’t expect to come from a band that is signed to this kind of label, nevertheless, their songs definitely keep you wanting more. Wonderful vocals and folk rock mix well together in this band and their lyrics are no less than amazing. They are definitely one of the bands that are a must watch as they get bigger and bigger and all for the right reasons. Listen to: “Winter Song” WORDS: Tamara Fuentes 10 - HIGHLIGHTMAGAZINE.NET

VENUE HIGHLIGHT ROSELAND BALLROOM - NEW YORK, NY

HISTORY:

WHY PLAY HERE?

Like many venues in New York City, Roseland Ballroom has a history that can never be replaced. After moving from Philly in 1919 and then being moved again in 1956 to its final location, Roseland Ballroom was one of the most popular dancing venues in New York City until it was converted into an ice-skating rink. During the early ’90s, the venue went through a $1 million renovation, which later helped it become one of New York’s biggest venues of all time. Past acts have included hit bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and Nirvana while placing new artists on the map like Darren Criss and The Wanted. Roseland is due to close on April 7 with Lady Gaga playing the last seven shows in the venue.

Roseland Ballroom is one of those few venues where over 3,000 people can come together to listen to one artist and still feel like you’re in an intimate venue no matter where you are standing. Roseland is also known for being a very flexible venue, with either you want a sit-down venue or a standing room only show, you are able to get either at Roseland Ballroom. The venue is also known for being locations for Beyoncé’s Live at Roseland: Elements of 4 DVD and being the venue where Kurt Cobain overdosed and was revived 3 minutes before going on stage for their show in 1993. Whether you’re there for a rock concert or a pop concert, Roseland is still one of those legendary venues that will definitely be missed.

OP-ED

WHAT HAPPENED

TO LOCAL MUSIC? NAME: Josh Weidling LOCATION: Chicago, IL

When I was in high school, 2004 through 2008, I spent the majority of my Friday and Saturday nights hanging out at the local VFW hall in my area attending local shows. Most of the time, it didn’t even matter what bands were playing. You just went to hang out, have a good time and listen to music. Now, when I walk into a local show, everything seems to have changed. There’s no one there and the people who are there only plan on staying for their friend’s band. It seems that all local bands want to do is support shows that have touring band on them. I know, I know, it’s cool to say you’re playing with a signed band that has X amount of Facebook fans. To be completely honest, these shows won’t help you out that much. I’m not going to dig too deep into the reasons why, but just so local musicians know, 99% of the time, those bands have no clout at their record label and have no chance to hooking you up with anything significant. When I was a local promoter in the Chicago suburbs back in 2007 through 2009, things were, like I said before, a lot different. Most of the shows I booked were all local bands and due to the success of my shows, I had the opportunity to handpick the bands I put on each bill (this was also due to me only throwing two to three shows per month.) All of the bands were excited to play their music for people who want to listen and hopefully become fans. This was a great era for my local music scene and it pains me to see its current state. The last show I ever booked was back in January of 2009. It was an all-local show and since it was winter (and we fortunately didn’t have any bad weather) there was nothing going on for the kids who liked local music. That, combined with a stellar lineup, resulted in a turnout of 459 kids. That’s an average of 65.57 kids per band that played. Why can’t we get back to that? The answer to me is simple. Too many bands want to get out of their local scene as fast as possible, to start touring instead of taking the time to develop not only their sound and musicianship, but their hometown fan base as well. As a band, you should never take a great hometown crowd for granted. They are the ones that will be there for you on your good and bad days. So, one of the many times that you come home from tour, broke and depressed, you can always count on a killer show to fill your spirits and pocketbook. Please take the time to help out your fellow bands, create a community and build something that will last. If you have shitty promoters in your area, screw them, find a local VFW hall and book your own shows. Trust me, it is not that hard. I was a 16-year-old kid when I started. All you need is a PA, couple helpers to run the door/security and eager music lovers. Touring isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be, so wait until you’re ready. I own a touring site, DigitalTourBus.com, I should know. 12 - HIGHLIGHTMAGAZINE.NET

WHO IS THE MERCH DUDE?? we don’t even know!

NAME: themerchdude (not really but I’m anonymous) LOCATION: I work on the road but I live in Orange County, CA WEBSITE: themerchdude.com WHAT IS YOUR STORY/WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE INDUSTRY? I had a friend that kept his promise. When I said to him “when you become famous call me” four years after we had that conversation I got a call from him saying, “I got a record deal I want you to come on the road with me.” That same day I quit my job and started touring. That was 12 years ago and I haven’t stopped touring yet… many different bands and different genres.

WHAT ARE THREE OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE CAREER MOMENTS?

In no particular order: 1) Meeting Elton john and having a long conversation about the music business. 2) Getting calls from different band managers asking me to tour with their band because another manager and band recommended me. 3) Meeting my wifey in San Francisco.

DO YOU EVER FEEL LIKE THERE ARE MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF SELLING MERCHANDISE? WHAT ARE THEY AND WHY?

There are many misconceptions; the biggest to me is fans thinking that a band gets all the money from the sales of that $20 shirt. You see let’s say that shirt cost anywhere from $5 to $7 dollars to make, then the venues take their “Merch Rate,” which can be anything from 15% to 35% so that is average of $4 gone. The band has $9 dollars left. Take out salary for the merch person and shipping cost and there is not much left.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PEOPLE ENTERING THE INDUSTRY?

My advice is don’t let the perks of touring be the reason you lose your job touring (drinking, parties and the groupies) trust me everyone goes crazy that first year of touring (I was that guy.)

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH IN YOUR CAREER?

I want to be able to make my merch a solid brand, solid enough to be able to do it and not have to tour. So feel free to go to www. themerchdude.com and pick up one of my shirts!

E S R O S LUTIONS R A E Y W E N WILLIAM BECKETT “My New Year's resolution is to continue pushing myself as a writer and performer, and to be fearless in experimentation in trying new things musically. Oh, and to catch up on Dexter.”

ITCH “My New Year's Resolution is to cut down my burger intake. I started munching on those tasty treats at a young age and it wasn't long before I started snorting mashed-up patties. Now, I've gone straight to the source/sauce and started injecting them into my eyeballs. Here's to going cold turkey/beef in 2014!” KYLE RODGERS (THE DOWNTOWN FICTION) “I feel like it's crazy for people to make unrealistic goals for New Years. If you want to change something about yourself, any day of the year should be a great day to do it. So, I'm going to use New Years as a stigma to help remind me of something I should be doing anyways. Something I was brought up to do since I was young; and that is simply to be a good man. In all aspects of life. I want to be nicer, and more available to my friends and family. I want to give more and take less. I want to listen, and stop talking so damn much. I want to be a better drummer, and a more reliable human being. I want to be more respectful, and more respectable. I want to be more genuine. These things are within my reach, and things I can control. 2014 is going to be a great year!” LYNN GUNNULFSEN (PVRIS) “My new years resolution is to be happy on my own.” 14 - HIGHLIGHTMAGAZINE.NET

BRIAN CAG (ACTION ITEM) "Every year, I feel like we try to get ahead of ourselves with these resolutions and almost end up upsetting ourselves because of our lack of commitment. My new years resolution this year is to not make any promises I can't keep. Most of all, being honest with myself and others around me, which would be a direct correlation to my last statement. I am in such a great place in my life right now, and I think at 24 I'm done with being so hard on myself for certain things. It's wonderful to be driven and passionate, and I try to embody those aspects in what I love to do. However, I think I'm going to try to focus a little more on myself this new year and make sure every decision I make will affect me in a positive way." TOM MCARTHER (SOMETHING YOU WHISPER) "To write more songs this year than any year past, and make our upcoming "From The Other Side" EP our best release yet"

ALEX REED (STAGES & STEREOS) “My New Years Resolution to work harder to achieve my dreams and stay in better touch with loved ones!” GERMAN ALEXANDER (OTENKI) “My new years resolution for this year is to create more music for 2014. My goal is to drop peoples jaws with what we have coming. It's going to be epic for team otenki. We will record another cd and we will deliver some killer lyrics with these amazing tunes. I'm focusing more on connecting with our fans through words this next time around. I've learned so much from watching my bandmates and I want to challenge myself to write lyrics that will move hearts. Away from my band I'm going to do a lot more traveling around the world with my girlfriend. I've always wanted to do this. First stop is Russia. I hope they have blue ocean water so I can knock this off my bucket list. There is so much to accomplish for 2014. I can't wait.” JAKE BUNDRICK (MAYDAY PARADE) "My New Year's resolution is to choose better food options to eat and try to be as healthy as I possibly can be on and off the road. I've got the working out down, so this is my next step. I'm trying to be in the best shape of my life for next summer's Vans Warped Tour 2014. I've got goals baby!!!!"

MICHAEL LOMBARDI "This year I want to see more live performances. Whether they are a new band playing at a small venue or a famous act. Every time I go see a show I'm inspired by what I see and the people I meet, not only as an artist but as a person. To continue learning, growing and developing. I want to dig a few layers deeper within myself. Observe and strive to express my point of views and truths with honesty. Keep myself open to experience and enjoy the journey." BRIAN DALES (THE SUMMER SET) “I have two New Year's Resolutions. The first is to write 200 songs in 2014. The second is to travel to the two continents that I have not visited yet: Africa and Antarctica." MIKE SCALA- "Be more like The Avengers and keep the shows "Fun as Hell.” Some goals for the new year would be to tour the east coast, work with an awesome producer, and sell more records than General Tso."

CLOSE YOUR EYES “Our goal as a band is to continue the forward progress. Since changing vocalists, we’ve had a lot of ups and downs. Next year, we’ll be playing 6 continents and doing our best to bring positivity to fans the world over. We also want to make Sam, our singer, a US resident so here’s hoping that works out… And Sam says his resolution is to never cut his hair!” JOSH SMITH (NORTHLANE) "Next year I’m going to get a real job.”

ALEX BABINSKI (PVRIS) “My new years resolution would be to give more. This past year I’ve met a lot of people and countless times people went out of their way to help me out. I think the only way I can repay them is to start giving back to everyone else. Even complete strangers. Because in the end what comes around goes around and you get what you give.”

CHRISTOPHER PAUL STELLING to remember stillness. to turn off the devices. remember to breathe. keep reading. CANDY HEARTS Mariel: my resolution is to not judge myself more harshly than I judge others and to get in better shape; Matt: My resolution is to run a 5k..... naked; John: My resolution is to not take out my phone when I'm out to eat with my friends OTENKI Josh Tenorio: To keep playing next year and Keep growing as a band and bass player. Also, a new bass please. If anyone wants to be awesome and get me one. JODI GOOD "My New Years resolution is to jump for at least ten minutes a day on my new eight-foot trampoline (Yes it's inside my apartment). Also, to go at least six months WITHOUT dying my hair. I am trying to let it grow out, but every time I pass boxed color in CVS, I get a little out of control. Finally, my most serious resolution is to find the positive in every day situations, even when it doesn't seem like there is any."

RYAN NEFF (MISS MAY I) I’ve never been one to make them, and even when I do they are quickly broken. This year I’m going to try and watch what I am eating a bit more and continue my exercise regiment. Touring and eating cheap have had me eating mcdonalds and Taco Bell both on and off the road a pretty unhealthy amount for the past 5 years or so. The changes I made in my diet mid 2012 have helped my health on the road tremendously, keeping my stamina up, and helping my voice be as strong as it can each and every show. The entire band picked itself up this summer and hopped on the bandwagon, so hopefully this resolution and the common interest with the guys helps me keep the pressure on myself to continue the improvement.“

NEW POLITICS David - wants to play in 5 new countries this year and also write new songs; Soren - needs to come to terms that he does not like yoga and write 25 new songs; Louis - wants eat healthier and stay in shape.

ENOMA ASOWATA To remember that flammable and inflammable mean the same thing. Worst. Thanksgiving. Ever. STEVEN KOPACZ (EX GO RADIO, SMOOTH SAILING CO) “I've been a drummer for over 13 years and in that time I've never took the time to learn another instrument (I know crazy right!?) I've been so caught up with touring and trying to be a better drummer that it's just never happened. But over the last 3 years I've been more and more intrigued by the piano so my New Years resolution this year is to learn how to play the piano.” ALEX (SILVER SNAKES) My New Years resolution is to get the hell out of Los Angeles. I've been planning a move for a while now but I'm determined to finally make it happen. Catch me living in the COLD mountains of North Arizona by summer.

FAUSTO PADILLA To work on some really challenging projects. I want to really spend some time producing some albums and writing music for Dirty Tokyo and Otenki. ENOMA ASOWATA To remember that flammable and inflammable mean the same thing. Worst. Thanksgiving. Ever.

RACHEL BROWN "This year I resolve to take more risks! I know it makes no sense that someone who gets up on stage nightly could be shy, but it's true! There are lots of things I chicken out of both on stage and off that I want to go for in the future." CODY KAHMAR "My New Years resolution is to be better than I was last year.... No matter what it is, I want to progress in all aspects of life. Relationships, family ties, music and just being a better all around person. I don't want to limit myself to one thing."

TIMOTHY HELLER (DRESSES) “I resolve to start thinking more positively, and have more faith in myself. I think a negative energy from me doubting myself gets in the way of what I truly aspire to do sometimes and I'm over it. I'd also like to draw and paint more, and grow in other creative ways aside from music.” VIV AND THE REVIVAL “2014 is going to be an amazing year. We have a lot of killer things coming up, so stay tuned to Viv and the Revival. “

PRINTZ BOARD "To tour with my solo project, and be self sufficient.”

KEVIN FLETCHER (UH HUH BABY YEAH!) "My New Years resolution is to read more books this year. I used to be such an avid reader, but honestly haven't picked up a book since finishing the Harry Potter series. I have an insane library in my basement that I haven't touched in years." HIGHLIGHTMAGAZINE.NET - 15

VANESSA SILBERMAN (DIAMONDS UNDER FIRE) “One of my biggest personal goals for 2014 is to help nurture the LA music scene & drastically make an impact in music. I want to be in a position this year as an artist & person where I can actually make a difference –for example, having a positive uplifting message through music that helps someone get through a hard time & see life differently. That’s very meaningful to me.” NICOLA (BE FOREST) My new year’s resolution is to play and compose as much as possible. And most of all, to spend so much time on tour the tour van becomes my new home!

JENNY MANN (BLAMESHIFT) "My New Years Resolution is to try to live in the moment more and worry less. I often get caught up in the future and forget to take a minute to enjoy the present moment. I am very lucky to be able to do music full time and I want to take more time this year to really appreciate that." THE ORPHAN, THE POET “Our collective New Years resolution is to continue traveling and meeting as many new people as humanly possible.” David: Start a filibuster; Jake: Become more active in fact-checking sources on Wikipedia; Drew: Build a log cabin; Jared: Learn a new card trick PRINTZ BOARD "To tour with my solo project, and be self sufficient.” BRIAN MACDONALD (PVRIS) “My new years resolution will be the same as last year! Continuing to live a healthy life followed by always lending a helping hand and being there for someone when they need it.”

KEVIN FLETCHER (UH HUH BABY YEAH!) "My New Years resolution is to read more books this year. I used to be such an avid reader, but honestly haven't picked up a book since finishing the Harry Potter series. I have an insane library in my basement that I haven't touched in years." SWF This year (2014) I resolve to step into the strength and wisdom of my soul. To listen to the vast silence inside instead of the ongoing insanity of my thoughts. To be fully present and awake in my life, to live with authority and autonomy, to speak the truth, even when it is a hard truth. To live by Tecumseh’s Creed. To stay out of the shit boat.

COUNT TO FOUR Well as a band, we would definitely say that we would like to go on a tour and not get in one argument on the road. But that'll never happen! It's mainly because we're brothers, and just like family, we fight! Over mostly the dumbest stuff, like who will sleep on the couch and who will sleep on the floor... it's all out of love though.

THE ASSEMBLY LINE “We’re really excited about 2014. We have some surprises up our sleeves for the new year, and definitely plan to continue eating more Taco Bell than should be humanly allowed. Huge thanks to Highlight and our fans for an amazing 2013. Looking forward to another great year!” - Thor Nguyen & Josh Ridley - The Assembly Line SKYTOWN RIOT “Our New Years Resolution is to go an entire year without accidentally breaking our own gear on stage. We do it more often than we'd like to admit, and it has to stop!”

GENERAL GHOST- “Our new year's resolution is the same as our mission statement year in and year out. Love God, love people and become better artists. This year is no different for us as we continue our efforts in becoming the best men and artists God intended us to be.”

16 - HIGHLIGHTMAGAZINE.NET

ROCKET & THE GHOST “Our New Years Resolution is to get back into the studio to record the next batch of songs. We've been talking to Wilson Brown (who produced our EP) about getting in to track a few new compositions that we're very pleased with. That and get a van so we can play these songs to some folks that have never heard us before!”

THE LONELY BISCUITS To make the whole world crave more buttery, flaky, lonesome biscuits. TECH N9NE For 2014, I’m gonna resolve to slow down on my drinkin’ and shoot for chiseled abs!

HIGHLIGHTMAGAZINE.NET - 17

AVRIL LAVIGNE The show opened with Avril belting “Here’s To Never Growing Up,” where she shed her rock star look for flowing blonde hair and sparkles. She really let her vocal ability shine when she performed a newer track, “Letting Go,” and it really reminded me why I fell in love with her back in the 2000’s. It was amazing to see such an established artist who has fans in such a wide age, too. The twenty-something’s were belting out “Complicated” while the junior high crowd loved “Girlfriend.”

ICONA POP The girls in Icona Pop were full of sweet harmonies and spunk on stage, which faired them well with this Top 40 loving crowd. The crowd response was pretty mellow during their set until they started playing “I Love It,” and the atmosphere completely changed at that point. Even the moms in the audience were dancing at that point, and Icona Pop’s short but sweet set seemed to be a solid one.

ROBIN THICKE Oh, Robin Thicke. He’s suave, can play the piano, and had a girl almost in tears next to me because she was so excited. Thicke was definitely the crowd favorite of the night and his stage presence was undoubtedly a huge factor in why. He interacted with the crowd much more than other artists had prior to his set, and even jumped into the middle of the crowd during his hit “Blurred Lines” which created excited chaos within the audience. He slowed it down with a sexy ballad and played a piano at one point, and the song turned into what reminisced a disco hit. Thicke is definitely a well-versed musician and his smooth demeanor sure didn’t hurt his performance any. 18 - HIGHLIGHTMAGAZINE.NET

FIFTH HARMONY The girls in Fifth Harmony were adorable, singing gorgeous harmonies (no pun intended) all while maintaining their high-spirited choreography. This X-Factor girl group seemed to be the least known by the crowd, so they had to work extra hard to win people over. The girls played new material from their EP “Better Together,” and also did a cover of Taylor Swift’s “Red” which was a sweet surprise. Fifth Harmony has an upcoming tour with Demi Lovato on their plates, which will surely skyrocket them into stardom. FLO RIDA Even if you aren’t a big fan of Top 40 music, I can probably guarantee that you would have had fun during Flo Rida’s set. From throwing signed shoes out into the crowd to riding around on the shoulders of Santa Clause and shaking hands with the audience, this man knows how to command a crowd and make things fun. “Apple Bottom Jeans” was of course a classic and a favorite, coupled with bright visuals and silly string to make it even better.

PARAMORE By seeing Paramore numerous times before this, I will always stand by the fact that they put on one of the best live shows I’ve ever experienced. Even though they were minus new father (congrats!) and bassist Jeremy Davis, Hayley Williams and Taylor York still managed to put on a high-energy 4 song set with their biggest radio hits such as “The Only Exception” and “Still Into You.” They pulled an eager fan on stage to sing “Misery Business” with them, and genuinely seemed happy to play to a new type of audience. ENRIQUE IGLESIAS The thing I love most about Enrique Iglesias is that he truly seems to be a performer for the sheer fact that he loves music. He came on stage in his usual jeans, plain t-shirt, and baseball cap and for him, it seemed to all be about the music and the fans and not the flashy attire or crazy antics. Iglesias kept it upbeat by playing his biggest dance hits such as “I Like It,” and kept it the most visually entertaining with the videos and lyrics popping up on the big screen behind him. TRAVIE MCCOY Travie McCoy is such an interesting guy, and he just seems to have “that thing” about him that makes people want to listen. He opened his set with “Billionare,” and that immediately got the audience standing and singing along. While his set was short, he kept the crowd standing and dancing along the entire time. He preached about writing songs for the people who had ever felt different, and he was gushing with positivity. McCoy played one of my personal favorite sets of the evening, and he seemed to captivate the room with ease. PHOTOS: Ashley Osborn WORDS: Anjel Lopez

HOME: Gold Coast, QLD NOW JAMMING: Volume I - EP CURRENTLY: Preparing for a busy 2014

MAKING IT AS AN UNSIGNED BAND

requires a lot of dedication and self-motivation, the four guys that make up Australian blues-rock band The Vernons know what they have gotten themselves into in the name of rock ‘n’ roll. Members Elliot Gooch on drums, James Nikiforides on lead guitar and vocals, Jonny Nyst on guitar and vocals and Hugh Tait on bass have taken their passion for blues music and performing and are working hard to build a career out of that despite the lack of financial help from a record label. After two years of being in a band together, the foursome released their first EP Volume I back in September. The band pulled their time and money together to put out the music that they had been working on. Nyst described the process as taking “a lot of time, a lot of hard work, and a lot of money,” he explained, “Without being signed it all rests on you and you’ve really got to be passionate and motivated to put it all in for the music.” As a young band with a love of live performance The Vernons were faced with new experiences when entering the recording process of their EP. The band decided to draw on what was familiar to create a recording that is both raw and fun. “We tend to stick to what we know, so when we got into the studio we preferred doing everything as if it were a show and just played most of it as a live track and we did a couple of overdubs afterwards,” Nyst said. EPs are certainly shorter than CDs usually consisting of about five to seven tracks, but The Vernons chose to take the shorter route. Volume I is comprised of only four tracks including “Shake ‘n’ Roll,” “Standing in Line,” current single “White Wine” and “Mercy.” In a world where musicians can’t seem to stop releasing material, The Vernons seem to have a firm understanding that less is more. “At the time we felt that those four songs really portrayed who we were and that the EP didn’t really need anything else,” said Nyst. “We do want to release as much content as possible but at the moment our main concern is quality, not quantity,” he later expressed. In order to support their new EP, the band took to the road in September shortly after its release. The band did a tour stint throughout the fall playing to a variety of crowds, gaining new experiences, and opening several doors. “Live shows are the reason we are here, and to do a whole bunch for our fans, old and new, was great. We had some huge crowds as well as some big nights, and what came from the tour were not only some vague memories, but also some really good opportunities for us going into Volume II,” Nyst explained

24 - HIGHLIGHTMAGAZINE.NET

Now that Volume I is out and making headway and the tour is over, the band is working towards writing new music and recording and creating their second EP as Nyst mentioned. The record is appropriately titled Volume II and the band is shooting to add six new tracks. “We thought about doing the full length LP but we want to put all our focus on putting together the best six tracks we can and we don’t want to lose sight of that by doubling the size of the record,” said Nyst. The Vernons have only been around since 2011 and despite not having a label behind them they have managed to make some waves. Releasing their EP and exposing themselves to new audiences on tour certainly have helped, but the band know they have to put in a little something extra to make it all work. “Everything outside of the actual music can be very difficult for all of us and personally, I myself find it extremely tough sometimes. However, in the end, I think you just have to remind yourself everyday of why you do it and for me, it’s always worth it,” Nyst explained, “Although there are hard times, I’m very thankful that I have the chance to play music every day. It sounds super corny, but I wouldn’t be doing it otherwise.” The Vernons are making some impressions and are definitely worth a listen with their fun blues-inspired sound. Even after everything the band has accomplished they still have so much more ahead for them in their career. These days they’re still working hard to build a career for themselves but they still dream of the day when they know they have hit their groove. Nyst described that day as this: “The day I can wake up late, go and play music in a studio for a few hours, go and play a show, and then drink with friends all night. Wake up, and do it all again. Yes.” PHOTOS: Nicole Mago INTERVIEW & STORY: Annette Schaefer

THEY’VE HAD A CRAZY

experience thus far, what with being on tour with Jake Miller on “The Us Against Them Tour,” not knowing what to expect going into it. But for Action Item, nothing could have turned out better - on so many different spectrums. According to lead singer Brian Cag, Jake’s fans have been so supportive and open towards the band, and Jake has been one of the most humble people they’ve had the pleasure of being on the road with. The band released an EP called Resolution on January 1st, 2013. The four piece band: Anthony Li (guitar), David Buczkowski (bass), Dan Brozek (drums), and Cag have been touring extensively for the past two years supporting a bunch of big name artists: Andy Grammer, Owl City and Andy Grammer. It seemed like every time they were about to sit down and try to write for new music, they would get a new tour offer. It was a weird phenomenon that such incredible opportunities were coming about while they were attempting to get their album together, a phenomenon that they feel super blessed to have experienced. They had planned on releasing new music earlier in 2012, but the touring schedule became so crazy that they only had a few months to put out something new, and that became Resolution. In Brian’s words, “The record was all over the place.” As a group, they’ve been trying to figure out where they “fit in” within the grand scheme of music, and this record was a bit like testing the waters. Some songs were jazzy, some were more in the rock vein and some even had hip-hop influences. Anthony and Brian have been writing more extensively and feel they can proudly say they have a solid musical and visually accomplished vision for the band. They’re told how to be a band, what kind of music to make, and any other personal opinions that shouldn’t be taken as fact by so many different people within the industry. Finally, Cag feels they’ve broken the boundaries and are confining for themselves what’s to come. With Anthony doing the bulk of the writing and Brian recently starting to contribute and collaborate with him, they’ve recently brought in some other writers into their sessions.

that have exploded on the horizon, due in part to their musical abilities and their entire creative outlook as a brand. I think that’s such a huge part of it for me now, and the rest of the guys, to create a brand, a vision, and entire package. […] I’m a huge fan of some Prince. Always find myself reverting back to his catalog. Digging a bunch of newer artists like The 1975, the new Sky Ferreira record is great too. Tons of great things out there right now,” Cag expressed. But with positivity in their career, always comes the difficult moments, too. Having to leave everything behind at home, realizing that nothing is forever, and that nothing is certain, are all part of pursuing a life of music. Brian finds solace in knowing that he is doing something he set out to do. He’s actually acting on his intentions, which is unlike most people his age in his opinion. And it’s nice to know that you can find comfort in such a thing. Plus, being able to see their fans connect with them on so many different levels: seeing the tattoos that will be on their fans forever, singing along at a concert, and even fans telling him a certain song impacted them in a specific way. These connections are truly special. And everyday that Brian is able to play music in front of a crowd for people, who care, is a validation for him truly living his dream. PHOTOS: Tarina Doolittle INTERVIEW & STORY: Daisy Matietta

Earlier this year, Action Item lost pianist Mark Shami, which most fans of the band are already well aware of. But what we wanted fans to know more about was how the situation helped them to learn and grow as a band. Besides the band staying friends with Mark, and both parties feeling that they’re better off, the dynamics and the relationships within the band and Mark actually feel stronger and more repaired now than before. The band wants everyone to be happy with whatever they choose to do in life, and their friendship runs much deeper than just the band. Since the tour is coming to a close the band is going to be writing a lot, with new music coming very soon. There’s no official word on release dates yet, but new music and a stronger direction inspired by a variety of different artists is definitely on its way. “This is a wonderful time for music right now. There are so many fresh, artistic people making music right now, and for anyone to say otherwise must be living in a hole. Loving a lot of new artists

WHAT ONCE BEGAN AS A SOLO

expedition in the music industry for one female vocalist has since blossomed into something much more progressive than originally anticipated. The Atlantic was conceived as a duo composed of Jessica Ess (vocals) and David Newton (guitar), who recently joined forces with Sean Connors (guitar) and Carson Cowart (drums), to bring the alt-rock band full circle. Ess and Newton were hesitant when they made the mutual agreement to add new members to the family, but took the plunge and were pleased with the musical chemistry they acquired after discovering Connors and Cowart. “David and I were so nervous when it came to adding members. We took well over a year searching and waiting for the right people and when Sean and Carson came along they just fit,” Ess admitted. “We haven’t had too much of a chance to involve them in writing yet, but that has given us more time to build real friendships with each other rather than jump right into stress and work.” Ess began her journey as a vocalist in Chicago, playing anywhere for anyone who was willing to listen, which in her case literally meant sitting on the floors of hotel lobbies as guests migrated through. Newton was a former member of several bands including That’s Outrageous and Best Week Ever, while Connors previously

32 - HIGHLIGHTMAGAZINE.NET

exhibited his skills in a band known as Broadway. With various musical backgrounds, each member brings a unique quality to the group, forming the quartet that is now The Atlantic. Newton and Ess first met after connecting over Facebook, realizing that they shared a similar dream, and the two immediately clicked. “He had been in pop/rock bands and then a much heavier band, so he was able to see my visions really easily. He showed me a few tracks he was writing for a band he wanted to start and I instantly was able to write lyrics.” The Atlantic soon became a topic of interest when Ess received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to lend her voice on the Sleeping With Sirens’ song “Scene Four: Don’t You Ever Forget About Me.” She discussed how the dream of singing on a track with one of her idols transpired. “I was actually at work, and on my break I checked my phone. I had over 600 twitter mentions, countless emails and messages on YouTube saying Kellin was looking for me. It was unreal. We got in contact and he showed me the song. It was unreal how a band I was covering could see so much in me!” Kellin Quinn saw a potential in her that resulting in confirming her own confidence and belief in her talent. Although it often seems like times are hard for dreamers, Ess’s endless efforts to expose not only her individual

talent, but her band are proof that a dream accompanied by a lot of hard work has the ability to become a reality. In this day-andage, a little assistance from the Internet, social media, and wordof-mouth doesn’t hurt either. One of the most important things that artists need to learn in the music industry early on is choosing whom to have on their team. In an industry where many people have dollar signs in their eyes, not all relationships, especially with individuals behind the scenes, are always authentic. It is vital to weed out those toxic relationships as soon as possible. “I think the most difficult thing is to distinguish between what’s real and what’s fake. There are a lot of great people in this industry, but there are also a lot of greedy people who don’t see your worth. They just see money,” Ess confirmed. Not only is creating a community composed of the band, crew, and agents a key in becoming successful in the music world, but establishing connections with fellow musicians and artists is also extremely valuable. Living in such an artistic city has aided the band in authorizing integral relationships that promote nothing but positivity and praise. “Chicago is an awesome place for creativity. I think we got lucky in making such good friends here,” Ess said. “Chicago has this sense of unity that I haven’t found many other places. We all look out for each other.”

focused. In addition to Ess’s guest feature on the Sleeping With Sirens track, The Atlantic have also collaborated with fellow artists including Xander Bourgeois (former Secrets vocalist), worked closely with local photographers and performed alongside other local Chicago bands, as well as recorded with producers like John Feldman, Mike Green and Blake Harnage. “The music business today is just as much about who you know as it is about being talented, being unique and how you represent yourself. But most of all it’s important to help others along the way and do whatever you can to be a family,” Newton stated. “We’re all in this for the same reasons, and having good friends makes all the hard times so much easier. We couldn’t be successful without the support of the people we’ve met along the way. They’ve inspired us and taught us so much.” Now that The Atlantic has a solid lineup in place as well as family, friends and other professionals backing them, they are prepared more than ever to let their career take off. It is likely that 2014 will be their year, as they are more than ready to start touring the country and release some new material whether it is in the form of a new EP or a debut full-length. Keep your sights set on The Atlantic because they are about to be flooding the music industry with nothing but good vibes and even better music. PHOTOS: Ashley Osborn INTERVIEW & STORY: Haley Black

HOME: Chicago, Baltimore & Richmond NOW JAMMING: “Can’t Shake The Feeling” - Single CURRENTLY: Preparing for the released of their new full-length, SHAKE (2/4)

ORANGE CAME OUT ALMOST A YEAR

ago in February 2013. Jumping right into it, we asked Diamond Youth exactly what is next, and when it will be happening. The answer is February 4, 2014, and it’s called SHAKE, which is a little collection of songs the band has been working on this year and just recorded in September. It was their second time working with Brian McTernan, and as Sam Trapkin says, “Brian is truly the man.” Since they’ve worked with him before, he considers that they vibe well. Paul Leavitt, who recorded Don’t Lose Your Cool (and also “the man”), is now in the same building as Brian – which made everything easier. Sam comments that he would like to be able to have the ability to call any of the people in his immediate proximity “the man” and have it be true, which wasn’t a problem while recording. Most Diamond Youth fans have probably heard quite a bit about their DIY mentality. I was curious as to how that adds to the pleasure of creating music. And Sam had quite the answer, stating, “I think creating music is like having a mosquito bite. It feels really good to scratch for a second but then it hurts and feels weird. I wish it was pure pleasure. For me, a semi-neurotic person, it’s not always that simple. But making music with your friends is undeniably one of the coolest things you can do, even if no one else likes it. Just think about what you’re doing. You’re birthing something out of the depths of your soul and making it real. Like someone else can hear it. It’s not just in your brain anymore.” Diamond Youth has just been on tour with some equally awesome bands, Citizen and Polar Bear Club. According to Sam, there is a true array of personalities on the roster, everything from “angsty 19 year olds to 35 year olds with grey beards” and Diamond Youth fall somewhere in the middle. Apparently it’s been very low stress, with everyone on the tour being friends and having had great shows all the way. Sainthood Reps is also on the tour, who are “sick.” One added benefit was that Matt from Citizen has inspired Sam to start running. Even on tour, it’s something Matt

does every day, and now Sam is attempting to take after him. Soon they’ll be announcing record release tours and have been talking about going to the UK and Japan in 2014. When not living in close proximity on tour, the members of Diamond Youth are spread across the country. Which leaves them using the interesting process of iChat, GarageBand and email to send parts of songs back and forth; Sam doesn’t feel there would have been much more accomplished by living close. Except, of course, less money spent on plane tickets! This process is also becoming quite more normal in recent years, with bands trying to make music, no matter where they’re located. Though Sam listens to a pretty wide range of artists, like Suicidal Tendancies, Cage The Elephant, Al Green, QOTSA and Bruno Mars, he doesn’t know exactly what or how their sound is influenced. Further, he stated that he thinks it’s weird when bands try to act like they know what’s going on with that [certain influences] and if they do, they’re probably ripping people off. The most difficult part of their career so far has definitely been when they first started, and there was quite a bit of “side project” and “members of” type of titles attached to the band. Although annoying, they were fortunately able to overcome this by not caring and by continuing to just “Do their thing.” SHAKE will be the band’s fourth release in three years, and they’ve been touring consistently through the past two. “Too blessed to be stressed,” as Sam puts so perfectly. And blessed they are, with highlights like their show with Jimmy Eat World, and getting to play in Los Angeles, a dream of many artists, wherever they may be on their journey. HOME: Los Angeles, CA NOW JAMMING: Midnight Red - EP (2101/Capital Records) CURRENTLY: Preparing for the biggest year of their entire lives – not to mention some upcoming tour dates with Austin Mahone

BOY BANDS COME AND BOY

bands go, but one thing remains the same: a universal love for them. Throughout the decades, boy bands have captured the hearts of audiences everywhere with their charm, good looks, and catchy hooks and harmonies. TV shows such as X Factor and America’s Got Talent have encouraged young singers and performers to exhibit their talents to the world. Because of this, America has seen a resurgence of boy bands within the last few years. From the new British invasion of One Direction and The Wanted to recent American-bred boy bands like Emblem 3 and Before You Exit, the world is being reintroduced to the boy band. The most recent up-and-coming boy band goes by the name of Midnight Red. Instead of being placed together by a TV show or record label, the all-American boy band came together organically. The group saw its inception in 2009 when Burbank-native Eric Secharia and Seattle-native Anthony Ladao met through a mutual vocal coach. Soon, the two reached out to Thomas Augusto from a rural town in Texas. Secharia and Augusto met each other years before while participating in a singing competition for the revival

of the popular 90s boy band, Menudo. Neither one made it into the finals of the competition, but the opportunity laid the foundation for future successes and the beginning of their friendship. After stumbling across a YouTube video of Buffalo, NY, resident Colton Rudloff covering a Jesse McCartney song, the guys quickly added him to their growing lineup. Midnight Red’s manager at the time sent the group a recording of aspiring Los Angeles singer and California State University student, Joey Diggs Jr., who became the final member to join Midnight Red. “Not only are we from different parts of the country, but we have such different backgrounds in music. Between the five us, there is background from R&B to rock and roll to even country and everything in between. We are such a melting pot of music and culture, which I think is an accurate depiction of what the U.S. is and prides itself on being,” expresses Augusto. After solidifying their lineup, the guys in Midnight Red relocated to Los Angeles in order to start focusing on their career together. Originally named FLYTE, the guys decided to change their name 42 - HIGHLIGHTMAGAZINE.NET

to Midnight Red in order to avoid copyright issues with a cover band in Australia. The name Midnight Red came to Diggs Jr. in a dream, and the other guys liked it so much that it became their new name. The “red” in their name is also paying homage to their producer and mentor RedOne. After rehearsals, rehearsals and more rehearsals, Midnight Red finally got a chance to show a hotshot producer what they were all about. RedOn (known for his work with Lady Gaga, Pitbull and Nicki Minaj) invited the boy band to a meeting at Henson Recording Studios. After Midnight Red gave a quick performance in the parking lot of the studios, RedOne decided they were a group with tremendous potential and passing on the opportunity to work with them would be a mistake. The members of Midnight Red were anxious to start working with such a talented producer and so the collaborations began. After joining forces with RedOne, the boy band saw a drastic change in the size of their audiences. Eventually, the group landed a spot as openers on the 2011 NKOTBSB tour with none other than New Kids On The Block and The Backstreet Boys. Before landing such a huge gig,

the biggest crowd Midnight Red had played to was around 80 people. Needless to say, this opportunity came as a shock and huge blessing to the group. “Opening for such great acts definitely helped us become better performers. Being put in front of a crowd that has never heard of you really challenges you to win them over and be on your A-Game. Watching the main acts is another tool we utilized to learn, by watching how well they were able to command a stage. We walked away from all those shows so inspired and hungrier than ever,” recalls Augusto. Midnight Red provided jaw-dropping performances every night, wowing crowds as the opening act on the tour. Their infectious energy during their live performances allowed them to connect with each crowd and gain a stronger and larger fan base. This energy and instant connectivity with audiences paved the way for Midnight Red to play with many other successful pop artists like Carly Rae Jepsen and most recently, Austin Mahone.

During the same month they joined the NKOTBSB tour, Midnight Red released their debut EP entitled One Club At A Time. The EP featured the title track, two remixes and a cover of New Kids On The Block’s “Step by Step.” It only took a few shows into their run with New Kids on the Block and The Backstreet Boys before the crowd began singing along to Midnight Red’s songs. In July 2013, Midnight Red released their second single entitled “Take Me Home.” Produced by RedOne and released on Capitol Records, the song became a turning point in the group’s musical career. “Take Me Home” encompasses everything Midnight Red strives to achieve in their musicality. It is a fun, upbeat song displaying the group’s polished harmonies and ability to execute a pop ballad. “We knew ‘Take Me Home’ was special from the get go. It was the first song we recorded that phonically headed in the newer direction we wanted to go to. It’s the song that will let people know who we are,” comments Augusto. Piece by piece, Midnight Red have been releasing music to their ever-growing fan base, who have been patiently waiting for more new music. On December 10th, the group gave the fans what they wanted and released a self-titled EP featuring four brand new songs and a remix of their hit single, “Take Me Home.” Through a “Share to Unlock” process, fans shared news of the EP through social media networks and in return, they were rewarded with parts of the track listing and exclusive artwork. The Midnight Red EP showcases the extraordinary talent and energy encased within each member of Midnight Red. Each voice stands out uniquely and individually while still maintaining a vocal balance between all five members. “It was such a complete feeling to hear those songs played back in the loud speakers in the studio. We all start day-dreaming and go into creative mode throwing around ideas for videos and live performances for these new tunes,” explains Augusto. “Take Me Home” opens the EP with a familiar and inviting sound. The song is a fun, summery song that shows what Midnight Red is capable of delivering. The second track is the Wildboyz Club remix of “Take Me Home,” putting an electronic spin on the hit song. The EP continues with “Miss Firestarter,” a saucy tune filled with a punchy chorus and playful lyrics. It echoes the sound of Maroon 5 and The Cab. The fourth song on the EP entitled “Where Did You Go?” mixes a Latino rhythm with electronic and pop blended into the chorus, perfectly complimenting the musical diversity Midnight Red has to offer. Rounding out the EP, “Nothing Lasts Forever” allows each member to really belt out the verses and chorus with conviction because of the laid back instrumentals.

continually show their appreciation for the Redheads by interacting with them on social media sites. “We are lucky to have each other. We are like brothers...! When we have a tough day, getting to sing for the Redheads or seeing the support through social media brightens our day,” declares Augusto. The requirements for a successful boy band today are good looks, polished vocals and fun personalities. Midnight Red meets those requirements and then some. Their use of synchronized choreography during their performances gives them an advantage beyond any pop act currently out there. With the added element of dance, Midnight Red has to focus even more on nailing each performance, but like all performers know, mishaps arise and mistakes are inevitable. “My pants came undone once. I’m sure we’ve all tripped at one point. A couple of us have gotten hit by a microphone. I mean the list goes on. Our shows require intricacy so there is always bound to be a technical error here and there,” reveals Augusto. Taking influences from N’SYNC, The Backstreet Boys, New Kids On The Block and 98 Degrees, Midnight Red is stepping out into a pop world saturated with boy bands and male superstars to shake up the current state. While they can never go back in time to join the likes of their musical heroes, they are bringing the ideals of the 90s boy band to the present day, complete with synchronized choreography, finely tuned harmonies, catchy beats and thankfully, minus the terrible clothes and haircuts. 2014 looks bright for Midnight Red. With a new EP out and more songs on the way, the guys are looking forward to the future and all it entails. They have already gained a dedicated fan base that will see a tremendous growth in the new year. Their endeavor to bring back the quirks and ideals of the original superstar boy bands is proving to be successful. By redefining today’s definition of a boy band, Midnight Red is captivating audiences everywhere and giving the new generation a taste of what it once was like to listen to N’SYNC and The Backstreet Boys. Augusto adds, “We are five guys with one dream. Being on the same page creates synergy between us. We all know we have to work hard at what we do because we want to be the best.” PHOTOS: Ashley Osborn INTERVIEW & STORY: Jessica Klinner

“We definitely wanted to experiment with different instrumentation than what we had recorded previously to this EP and RedOne really brought our desires and fire to the table. We are very proud and excited about this EP and I think it hints at what we’re musically capable of,” says Augusto. After spending years working together, the members of Midnight Red have become like family and shared their talents and lives with their faithful fan base. If Queen and My Chemical Romance had a love child, it would be Foxy Shazam. Their live performances tinker on the border between wildly theatrical and plain insane. One minute lead singer Eric Sean Nally is eating a handful of lit cigarettes and the next he is belting out those hard to reach high notes with ease. The energy from their live shows is contagious and will leave audience members feeling euphoric and slightly stunned. The edgy, glam rockers have released four full-length albums since their inception and each one sounds more dramatic and soulful than the last. Foxy Shazam continues to top themselves music and performance wise. 2012 was a huge year for Foxy Shazam, seeing the release of their fourth studio album, Welcome to the Church of Rock and Roll, as well as a tour with legendary guitarist Slash. 2013 proved to be a much more laid back year for the band, but don’t count them out just yet. 2014 is here and Foxy Shazam is far from finished making their mark on the rock and roll world. Don’t call it a comeback either. They’ve spent the past year quietly plotting and planning their next big move, coming to a venue near you in 2014! WORDS: Jessica Klinner

Though The Venetia Fair’s cover EP, The Venetia Fair…Basically Just Does Karaoke, originally stemmed from their 2012 Kickstarter campaign, the EP is wonky, strange and extremely enjoyable. The song selection not only covers a wide variety of genres and eras, but included complex classics. At a first glance, the EP seems ambitious, but in actuality is playful and striking. The album opens with rock anthem “Bohemian Rhapsody” and was I surprised. Instead of trying to reinvent the song completely, The Venetia Fair put a punk rock spin. Benny Santoro has an incredible set of pipes and the layers of harmonies in combination with his falsetto are spot on. It is the perfect balance between Queen and The Venetia Fair, while still paying homage. My favorite song off the album is the cover of “Come On Eileen.” No matter how terrible the Dexys Midnight Runners original is, I will always have a soft spot in my heart. To my surprise, The Venetia Fair’s cover almost saves the original. The cover completely revamps the overall feel and wisely took out both the banjo and accordion parts; The Venetia Fair’s little guitar touches were the perfect addition to the song. Overall, the Venetia Fair completely embrace each song and make them their own. Oddly enough, if none of the original songs existed, the EP would still be as great. For example, as a huge Green Day fan, I almost forgot that “Jesus of Suburbia” was not written by The Venetia Fair. Instead of the punk Green Day version most are familiar with, The Venetia Fair added their signature danceable style and created a new Latin cabaret fusion rendition. I cannot stress how impressed I am with the album. The album is the perfect pick me up to blast in the car and shout at the top of your lungs! The band may not have anticipated as strong of an EP, but they are all invited to my next karaoke extravaganza. REVIEW: Theresa Pham

Artist: A Balance Between Album: Negative Space Broken English Records’ A Balance Between strives for their music to be as best sounding, unique and original as it can be. The New Jersey five-piece will tickle the ears of many with their latest EP Negative Space. The six-song EP gets off to a solid start; the first track titled “Your Own Hell” has a nifty little melody on the chorus that makes it a ton of fun to sing along with. There were some patchy areas through the next few songs. Lyrically, they were all on the stronger side, but musically, it just got kind of repetitive after a while. Although, the third song on the EP titled “Reaching Out” is a killer song! It sort of reminded me of losing someone special, but remembering the good times; it shines some light on a darker situation. The closing track, “Negative Space,” is also one of the stronger songs on the EP, and the guitar work was the one thing I took away from this song the most. Overall the EP was a fun listen. The one thing I wish they did differently was mix up the sound of the instruments a little bit. Musically it’s kind of limited; Jeremy’s vocals fit the style very well though. If you’re a fan of bands like Conditions or Underoath, you should have these guys in your iTunes library right away.

Artist: Plug In Stereo Album: A Little Peace EP Trevor Dahl’s six track EP A Little Peace embodies the same qualities as all of his previous works, which in this case is a good thing. Why change the formula if it works so well? As always, there is the presence of a strong pop influence and backbeats stirred together with predominant acoustic melodies. Dahl’s lighthearted songwriting skills are charming to put it simply. The fact that he co-wrote a song for One Direction’s sophomore record is proof enough of his talent and potential. Dahl’s collaboration with twin pop singers, Megan and Liz, “To Be Wanted” is a heartfelt message of authenticity and self-love; a single extremely worthy of being heard on pop-radio. “Home Soon” is a song that every touring musician or even college student away from home can relate to, missing their family and friends, and how things used to be before embarking out on their own. Being a 19-year-old himself, the EP’s themes are those that most teenagers and young adults can relate to, such as love, homesickness, growing up and self-discovery. This age bracket is sure to be the audience that will appreciate not only Plug In Stereo’s latest EP, but also the entire discography.

Artist: Switchfoot Album: Fading West With eight albums on their record, Switchfoot is mixing things up with their new release, Fading West. It is also the name of their first feature film, highlighting their lives as musicians and surfers. This new album exposes a deeper side to Switchfoot while staying true to their distinctive sound. This 11-track album starts off on the right foot, with Switchfoot’s latest single “Love Alone is Worth The Fight.” This anthem is a catchy combination of rhythm and empowering lyrics, guaranteed to make you smile. The echoing chants of tracks like this, “When We Come Alive” and “Slipping Away” are an exciting theme throughout the album. Complimenting their amiable pop-rock sound, this album has a few surprises mixed in. “Who We Are” and “BA55” are two tracks featured on the album that showcase the raw rocker side of this group. This band has come a long way from their first chart-topping album in 2003. They have been through it all together and their unbreakable bond is prevalent throughout this documentary and continues to live on through their music.
