FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends of High Jump, At High Jump, we understand that the right intervention at the right time can—and will—have a lasting impact on students’ educational and life trajectories. In the last five years alone, High Jump alumni have matriculated to more selective colleges at 3.5 times the national average.1 This year High Jump grew to serve 262 middle grade students across our three campuses at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, the Latin School of Chicago, and Francis W. Parker School, while still ensuring excellent outcomes. 100% of our 8th graders matriculated into rigorous college preparatory public and private high schools, while 89% of our high school-aged alumni will attend four-year colleges or universities this fall. Today, High Jump boasts 24 years of sustained success that proves our model. Yet it is in our current students and nearly 1,000 alumni that I see what will propel High Jump towards an even brighter future. Everyday I get to witness our current 12 year-olds—full of curiosity, intellect, and commitment—reaching for and earning new opportunities. And I get to witness our alumni, who are now young adults, young professionals, and leaders across Chicago and the nation, seeking opportunities to transform our world. High Jumpers all share an insatiable hunger to learn and an unwavering drive to make a positive impact. All this comes together for me to prove that High Jump is the place where young people take their first—and most critical—self-directed steps. Here they ensure that their optimism and ambition will never exceed their determination and academic preparation. High Jump students and alumni invest in their futures. They know that optimism without determination or that ambition without academic preparation is a recipe for unfulfilled potential. They will not settle for that. And I know you will not either—your support of High Jump ensures that these young people have a community of peers, mentors, teachers, and role models who will inspire, guide, and support them. For this, I cannot thank you enough. As High Jump moves into its 25th year of service, I look forward to joining with you to ensure our optimism and ambition are met with continued determination and preparation. Sincerely,

Lee Hart Executive Director

The Education Trust, 2014

FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Dear Friends of High Jump, It has been a momentous year at High Jump and we are so excited to share it with you! As we begin our 25th year of service in Chicago, we at High Jump are compelled to fulfill our mission with ever-increasing commitment and momentum. After several successful years of growth, the High Jump Board approved a new three-year strategic plan to enable High Jump to serve up to 360 students per year—more than double the number from only five years ago. We know that this is the right next step for High Jump and the students of Chicago for three reasons. Each year, there are thousands of students throughout the city who are brimming with potential. Research confirms that every year there are over 3,000 Chicago-area students who fit High Jump’s academic profile—and there are ample spaces in the area’s most competitive high schools for these talented young students. Additionally, High Jump is successful at what it does. We have a proven model that is based on research, a track record of success, and the infrastructure in place to fuel growth. Finally, our plan is driven by a growing recognition of the need for our services from funders and donors like you; and an incredibly supportive board that demonstrates its commitment with a 100% annual giving record. High Jump cultivates potential and propels young learners on a life-changing trajectory. We would love to reach each and every student and that’s why, in honor of our 25th anniversary, we are stretching to serve more students than ever before in organizational history. Simply put, your continued friendship and support of High Jump means that we can serve more high-potential middle grade students with limited financial resources than ever before—setting them on the path to academic success in rigorous high schools and beyond. Our profound thanks. Sincerely,

Priscilla Kersten Board of Trustees, Chair

PROGRAM High Jump is a tuition-free, two-year academic enrichment program for seventh and eighth grade students performing in the top 30th percentile (typically A and B students) with limited financial resources. We recruit public and parochial school students who display academic promise but are not already benefitting from advanced instruction, gifted services, or other forms of targeted academic support. The High Jump program operates three campuses in Chicago at the Latin School of Chicago, Francis W. Parker School, and the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and consists of six weeks of daily intensive programming in the summer and two to three Saturdays each month during the school year.

This amounts to more than 350 instructional hours annually — or 33% more class time — beyond students’ regular schooling.

HIGH JUMP

Rigorous academics, leadership development, high school choice, and powerful networks are the four pillars of High Jump’s program.

Students benefit from small classes with a maximum of 15 students and take accelerated courses in math, science, humanities and language arts, writing, visual and performing arts, social studies, and physical education.

Students also engage with peer and adult audiences through our signature leadership development course, Learners & Leaders, daily interaction with near-peer alumni role models, and discussions with professionals at the program’s annual career day.

HIGH JUMP HIGHLIGHTS

Programmatic Growth More than 260 students—our largest student body ever—participated in a year of academic rigor and exploration. Students were thrilled to delve into STEM subjects by partcipating in handson labs and activities with real-world applications. They dissected frogs and sheep’s hearts, studied watersheds and chemical interactions, and learned the business application of algebraic equations. Teachers delivered thought-provoking lessons utilizing innovative approaches such as Philosophical Chairs and Flip Classrooms. These teaching methods allowed students to explore complex issues such as immigration and local school closures, and they nurtured the development of higher-order thinking skills and encouraged independent study. High Jump students welcomed Mawi Asgedom, author of Of Beetles and Angels: A Boy’s Remarkable Journey from a Refugee Camp to Harvard. His dynamic story of resilience and triumph inspired students to set big goals for themselves. At High Jump’s annual Career Show & Tell, experienced professionals shared their personal journeys to successful careers in medicine, architecture, chemical engineering, and civil service. Alumni shared their stories of entrepreneurship and community engagement. Students were wowed by the Lookingglass Theatre’s fantastical production of The Little Prince and moved by the Steppenwolf for Young Adults’ heartfelt performance of Lord of the Flies. High Jumpers finished the year by giving back to their community—packing 117 boxes which contained 25,000 meals for Feed My Starving Children and hosting a St. Patrick’s Day party for seniors where they played chess and made “no bake” treats. In Chicago, applying to high school is much like applying to college. Cohort 24, Class of 2014, eagerly attended the annual High School Fair, which attracted over 50 local and national rigorous college preparatory schools. Parents cofacilitated workshops and engaged in panel discussions about High Jump’s High School Choice program, school culture, the boarding school experience, and managing the application process.

Measuring Impact High Jump began testing implementation of its new Impact Framework. Outcomes measured by the Impact Framework include: the percentage of students that demonstrate navigation skills in high school, percentage of students that earn financial assistance to attend high school, percentage of students who maintain or improve a ‘B’ average, percentage of students who maintain a positive mindset, percentage of students who demonstrate leadership capabilities, and percentage of alumni that attribute High Jump as helping them succeed in high school.

High Jump has taught me that no matter where I may have come from I have the ambition and potential to succeed anywhere. – Marquise Davion, Cohort 19. Walter Payton College Prep, Columbia College, Class of 2017

Launching our 25TH Year This spring, High Jump enrolled its 25th cohort of determined learners! The 2014 benefit officially kicked off the anniversary celebration, and in January, the Board approved a three-year strategic plan to serve more deserving students across Chicago. High Jump will be able to serve 360 middle school students per year by 2015.

Strategic Plan 2014-2017 High Jump engaged in a strategic planning process to guide its direction for the next three years. Following an intensive nine-month strategic planning process, the High Jump Board of Trustees approved the organization’s strategic plan in January 2014. This plan identified the organization’s sustainable growth model, core values, and actionable outcomes for the next three years. Key initiatives include expanding High Jump’s University of Chicago Lab campus to serve 120 seventh and eighth students over the next two years, increasing total program student capacity to 360 students by 2015, and enhancing services for High Jump alumni in high school.

VISION Education is key to creating choice, access, and opportunity. High Jump envisions a Chicago where all students, regardless of financial circumstances, are equipped with the tools they need to succeed in rigorous college preparatory high schools and beyond.

ORGANIZATIONAL VALUES

Increased Engagement More than 430 civic and corporate leaders from across Chicago gathered to provide A Spring of Opportunity at High Jump’s annual gala.

The 2014 fundraiser raised over $624,000 and kicked off High Jump’s 25th anniversary celebration. Co-chaired by Diana Aixalá and Gavin Campbell, Nicole and Brad Mann, and Anne and Jeff Holden, the event was the largest and most successful in the organization’s history. Guests were greeted by High Jump alumni who shared their personal stories and the transformational impact of the program on their lives, their families, and their communities. During the program, they heard from featured alumna speaker Liliana Scales, along with three other prominent alumni and students during a moving video. The evening culminated in a paddle raise, as guests helped Light the Room – each donor receiving a glow bracelet as a token of their support that night. The High Jump Board of Trustees realized 100% annual board giving for the second year in a row. High Jump also achieved its highest grant revenue in organizational history, while making great strides in identifying and cultivating major donors to support its expansion goals. In an effort to re-engage our strong alumni base and build a network across all cohorts, High Jump continued work with the Alumni Council and launched a complete social media rollout that included High Jump Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages to better connect with key stakeholders including alumni and donors. In November, the Alumni Council hosted a reunion for Cohorts 1-15 followed by an alumni spring appeal for the first time in organizational history.
