She ended up being in distress and I was told by staff that I saved her life by coming in when I did. They all came together as a team and knew exactly what to do to keep her ok until my emergency c section. I will forever be grateful! Please let her know “”Thank you”” for making this hard time tolerable” Desert Valley Hospital, Jennifer Hoskins, RN - ER “On January 17th, Jennifer Hoskins was ER charge and the emergency room received a very critical baby via ems. The baby arrived as a traumatic full arrest and although there were excellent staff here to care for the baby, code whites are always emotional. I have received many reports from staff stating that Jennifer helped keep the staff calm and focused during a very difficult situation. Once the baby was stable the staff called Loma Linda to transfer the baby. The rest of the baby’s family was at Loma Linda and the baby needed to go to a trauma center, however because of inclement weather, Mercy Air and Reach refused to fly. For unknown reasons Loma Linda refused to send their transport team, so Jennifer had staff call the Army to see if they could help. They would have transferred, but thought a code 3 ground transfer would probably be quicker. At that time the baby coded again, once the staff stabilized the patient Jennifer made a split decision “to get the baby down to his mother”. She called AMR code 3 and volunteered to be the critical care RN for transport. It was reported to take about 40 minutes to get to Loma Linda, but upon their arrival the trauma team at Loma Linda was there to greet them and the baby was more stable then when they left. I was told the entire ER staff was amazing that day, but especially Jennifer. Her care showed true compassion. She gives kudos to the hospital administrators as well. “They are all great,” she said, adding that working with people you like makes every day worthwhile. Tara has seen several remodeling projects start and finish at Desert Valley Hospital, and she finds the changes fun and exciting. Tara is the mother of two girls, aged nine and “almost one year.” She and her family enjoy the mountains and sports events, especially gymnastics and soccer. Tara also enjoys crafting projects in her spare time.

She credits Desert Valley Hospital with having a very strong sense of “belonging,” especially in the ICU. Melinda is married and has two children. To maintain a quiet balance in her otherwise active life, Melinda enjoys completing needlework projects, and she loves to read. She has a large family, too. Her four children are grown and raising families of their own, making Jennifer a grandmother twice over. Three of her children are in the military and are currently stationed out of the area. She lives on a “hobby farm,” and that “keeps the kids busy,” she says. Nurse of the Month December 2019 Back in the day, nurses wore white from cap to shoes. Sandra Salas remembers her aunt in that uniform. “She looked like an angel,” she said.

Alicia Mitchell received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Norfolk State University in Virginia. While working as an Enlisted Combat Medical Specialist Sergeant in the United States Army, she was encouraged by a civilian nurse to meet with an Army ROTC recruiter about attending college to become a Registered Nurse. Alicia is currently an Obstetrical Charge Registered Nurse at Desert Valley Hospital’s The Birthplace. She plans to obtain her Registered Nurse Certified designation. She loves Desert Valley Hospital because of the supportive, caring and loyal “family” of coworkers she sees every day. Alicia credits her faith in God as well as her parents Peggy and Norm Byrdsong, Pastors Bishop Jesse and Helene Giddens and many others who have encouraged her from the beginning.

She decided at an early age that becoming an “angel nurse” was absolutely the right thing to do with her life. Two sisters and her sister-in-law are also nurses, so the family tradition continues. She enrolled in Victor Valley College’s nursing program and while the “all white uniform” has changed, her love of nursing has not wavered. Sandra knows the importance of the work she does, and she appreciates how much her patients benefit from the care she and her fellow nurses give them when they come to Desert Valley Hospital. A former Respiratory Therapist and currently stationed in the Cath Lab at the hospital, Sandra said her favorite part of the job is when the patients feel they are being well taken care of. “I love seeing them feel better,” she said.

Obviously, multi-tasking is one of Sandra’s strong suits. “I feel very good about what I’m doing,” Sandra said. “I enjoy working in Intensive Care, as well, and making my patients feel better is always a high point of my day.” When not on duty, Sandra has two special interests that actually work quite well together — traveling and photography. She manages to multi-task even in her leisure hours.
