In this special panel discussion accompanying the retrospective film series, HIFF will examine 20th century depictions of the South Pacific through a western lens. Panel topics will include representations of the Other, exoticism, and stereotypes such as the “noble savage” with a focus on films presented in the retrospective series. Panelists will include UH professor Vilsoni Hereniko, New Zealand scholar Selina Marsh, filmmaker Arthur Dong, UH professor Alice Somerville, and HPU professor Houston Wood.
