A young, multiracial Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) woman sets out to discover the meaning of her lengthy, 63-letter, Hawaiian name from her estranged schizophrenic mother. She discovers not only herself within the name, but gains a whole new perspective on the idea of sanity and how cultural differences can muddle its definition.
With 96 percent of the world’s population speaking only 4 percent of the world’s languages, what does it mean today to speak your mother tongue? Four young indigenous women from the Austronesian language territories Taiwan and Hawai’i share their questions, desires and challenges of learning their native languages.

Shaleha, a woman of mature years, agonizes that she cannot bear a child. To fulfill her husband’s only wish and to be blessed by Allah (as having a child is a tangible proof of divine grace), Shaleha decides to march to a different drummer. Her resolve is to find a new partner for her husband. Providentially, Shaleha finds the girl, but on the eve of her husband’s second marriage, a gnawing jealousy consumes Shaleha.
Genevieve, 17, lives with her widowed mother, who owns an umbrella shop. She and Guy, a 20-yearold auto mechanic, are secretly in love and want to marry. Shortly after, Guy is drafted to serve in the war. While Guy is away they drift apart, and Genevieve must choose whether to accept an offer of marriage from a wealthy merchant. Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes ‘64, Demy’s film was groundbreaking as one of the first musicals in which every line was sung.
